RE:  this thing about picking Mark Wahlburg, Charleton Heston or James Franciscus:

When I first got a vcr I got the original POTA movie and my girlfriends and I "paused" all the fanny shots and the flapping loin cloth shots.  We had a good time (sigh). I loved Chuck Heston and not for his brain.  But there again, Mark W. looks pretty good to me.  James is all right, but he was a wimp.

I am setting myself up for a lot of 'cracks' in this group, but am feeling fearless today :)

Okay, folks, this is the best I can do.  I hope clicking on what I'm sending gets you to what I'm looking at.  One of you guys with better computer skills than me can turn it sideways, blow it up a little, and put it next to Cornelius's map.  I hope anyway.

I know know this won't change any minds, but what the hell.

Wow!  That was fast.  Thanks, guy.   Okay, so all I'm try to point out to everybody is that for me Chesapeake Bay is the only body of water on the east coast that could match the size of the inland sea that Taylor crashes into, and the area does get you below the Statue of Liberty.  It seems pretty obvious to me that Taylor rides north after he leaves the cave.

Of course, it doesn't 'fit' with what goes on in BENEATH, but then that's another movie.  I'm just talking PLANET here.

Anyway, that's the way I like to look at things.   Thanks again, ThyPentacle.

Gunsmoke was on CBS, not NBC, and had nothing to do Star Trek being cancelled. Star Trek was very low rated all during its three year run. The letter writing campaigns in the first and second seasons saved it but only a halfhearted campaign was mounted during the third season.

I agee that is shows an area far west to Pennsylvania. But I still don't buy that it's Cheapeke Bay. I'm still waiting for more convincing evidence.

Thanks. Now that I see Cornelius' map sideways, I can see it's impossible that it's the Cheasapeke Bay area. If it were then the rivers would be flowing south to north.

So, you think the apes live in New Jersey in BENEATH?  Well, now we have to get ThyPentacle to capture that matte painting of a ruined Manhattan shown in BENEATH so you guys can see that the apes march on the city from the east!  Putting their city on Long Island!   Oh, BENEATH is a mess!

I agree that Zira's hair is more accurate for a chimp, but I just like the hair they have in the new movie better simply cause it's more my type of style. I didn't know about the Janet Jackson thing as I haven't seen much of Tim Burton's other movies. I also agree that Nova's (ape) hair was too long. In the end, it really comes down to individual likes and dislikes.

Now, before a certain somebody says, "Enough about the damn hair!" Anyone have a new topic? :o)

I think Lolo's hair looks fine. You have to keep in mind that she's an ape of
course. I think you guys are basing your hair-style judgment on humans a
little too much. Ape hair is a bit different than human hair.

No no no no no.  That is not what I'm saying.  Sure, there are some chimps
with longer hair.  Binobos come to mind . . . But, what I'm taking about, and
what other's have said as well is this Janet Jackson thing.  Other's have
said, and quite rightly I think, that Burton has this kind of Edward
Scissorhands / Robert Smith looking characters running through his films and
that's where it came from.  But I like Zira's hair style.  It's perfect for
female chimps.  It has nothing to do with humans hair.  As far as Ape Hair
goes no ape has bangs.  So if Zira's hair seems a little long in back for and
ape then Ari's is too long in front.  And Nova's (ape) is just too long
          period.

Of course, that's assuming the Apes knew exactly where they were giong, marched in a straight line to the ruins of New York and didn't have to wander around searching for it. But you're right Beneath is a mess.

Hey,looks pretty close-but this is really splitting hairs-we can never
really know unless we hunt down the art director, prop men or perhaps
exhume and revitalize Schaffner himself! Maybe Bill Creber would have an
            "inside" knowledge?

This is the reply I got from Joe Russo, co-author of "Planet of the Apes Revisited," whom I forwarded some of our postings.

Bill Creber would be the guy to ask, I think, though I'll bet he wouldn't remember, or say, "Are you kidding me?  It's just a map!"

I have to put my 2 cents in here, even if I'm not a guy.  All the female apes looked good, with the exception of Thade's sister.  It was her who was having a bad hair day.  Why did the females all look much more human than their male counterparts?  So we didn't get offended by the hinted attraction between Leo and Ari?  As for Daena!  Don't get me started!!!!!!!  All the other humans had looked dirty and greasy, yet her hair looked like she just left the salon.  Did you catch when she reached up and touched Leo's face towards the end?  "You came...."  There was some dirt on her hand but the fingernails were perfectly manicured.  The closeups on her face... the dumb looks... guess they were supposed to reflect innocence?  If she had anymore collagen injections into her lips... her face would've prolly exploded!

Guess the movie was trully male oriented, because they managed to sneak in yet another stereotypical blonde.  Kinda makes me glad I'm a brunette!!!!!

Hehe. She looks cute to me. I think she's as cute as Ari actually. Wish they would have given her character some more screen time, but Tiffany Smith, who played the part BTW, did a good job in her little role.

I don't care for that hair style.  But then again I thought all the chimpettes had bad hair.  Many didn't like their makeup (they really should have done something with Leeta's awful lower jaw, and Lisa Marie's teeth!), but that hair!  All wrong.  Ari's hair was okay in some of the publicity photo's But it was usually a windswept mass in the film.  And speaking of Nova and Daena, Nova had a wild, primitive sort of beauty.  Deana was running through jungles and deserts looking like a super model in a Conan movie.  I've heard more than one critic ask, where'd she get the lip gloss?
Perhaps it was rendered wild boar fat?  Hey, if Leo's beard never grows, why not?

Yeah, the long way around, through the Bronx.  Maybe they stayed overnight at Fort Apache.  Maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt.

Look, if you watch BENEATH, as James will attest, the gorilla army marches from Ape City to the subways of New York in about a total movie running time of four minutes, therefore the two must be close together, and Brent leaves one of the green belts and rightaway finds Queensboro Plaza then only walks down a subway for two minutes is is under Manhattan.  What out proof do you need that Ape City in BENEATH is on Long Island.  Probably Hempstead.

Gee, can't you guys figure out anything?!!!

Actually, Paley was the champion of the POTA series. It was Fred Silverman, who was then CBS' Head of Programming, that hated having the POTA series forced on him. He was the one that moved the show at the last minute from the originally intended time slot of Tuesday at 8 to the death slot on Friday.

Well maybe if they had showed any of them crossing a river to get there. And if Taylor & Nova's trip from Virginia to the statue could be time compressed from the couple of weeks it would taken to less than 2 minutes of screentime than the chase with Brent could of been compressed from several hours. And it does take the Apes a good chunk of the film to get there.

Well, I think that just the fact that the forbidden zone is desert, there
had to be some sort of land shift. I mean after all, the trek of Taylor,
Dodge and Landon aross the forbidden zone was not just nuclear waste land
(if that was the case), but also clearly, MOUNTAINS, HUGE MOUNTAINS! That
are not in New York nor Verginia. So clearly land masses did shift. So it
does explain map differance between now and then.

              In the words of Elvis.
              "Thank you very muuuch'.

But on the other hand, that would bring us right back to square one wouldn't
it. For it would suit both Verginia and New York Map Theories.

              I'm not helping am I :o)

I think Roddy mentioned Paley in the documentary and the "no "ape" show on

              Hey Rory,

              No reason to dispair.
We developed the ECONOMY versions for folks who can't swing the higher price tags of the DELUXE busts.
The Econs still look good; take a look at the APE-O-NAUT versions (enclosed).  They still are impressive conversation pieces, for a fraction of the cost of the DELUXE busts.
And there's always Ebay.   We fix up the less than perfect castings and put them up for auction from time to time, so you might get lucky sometime.  Who knows?

I'm about to show my ignorance again, but... Just wondering. Isn't
it possible that in 2000 years, the Statue of Liberty could have been
destroyed, reconstructed as a museum piece, stolen much like a high
school football mascot and moved to a foreign place, etc... on and on
ad nauseum..... It obviously isn't on it's pedestal. Is it really a
useful landmark? Couldn't we be somewhere else entirely? Why limit
the search to the eastern seacoast?

I dunno about rivers running south to north.  As for changes to the geography of a landmass, I saw a tv program not too long ago that predicted than sometime in the next few thousand years, maybe as little as 100 or as long as 10,000, a thing called a "mega-tsumani" would hit the east coast of North America and destroy everything up to 25 miles inland from along the entire eastern seaboard.  Goodbye New York, Atlanta, Miami, etc.,etc....

Who knows?

I noticed that when they blew the hatch, a piece of the ship that wasn't supposed to fall off, did. It looked like one of the window cover plates.

Greetings ....I was watching the opening sequences of The Planet Of
The Apes last night in beautiful widescreen and noticed a mistake the
crew made in filming the ship after splashdown?
Now I'm just new to this message board so forgive me if
this was discussed before. Also don't get me wrong... this is my
favorite film of all time so it doesn't take away from the film it's
just a error which most people would never notice.

              Any guesses?

Since Earth's current orbit and position in our solar system is taking us thru a prime asteroid impact zone, I'd say it's more likely to be hit by one of those in the next few decades. If that occurs, say goodbye to more than just the U.S. East Coast.

              Hey Gang,

The folks at  DIAMOND wanted me to rate the  Medicom Ultra Detail Figures on the scale of "GREAT-GOOD-LAME" for each figure listed below.
I also asked him if we (the fans) should start a letter writing campaign to FOX to get them to green lite the US release of the figures for DIAMOND.  He said,"No need to address FOX.   LetÂ’s just say the situation is under control."  Also, when I commented that it would be better if the ZIRA ape-o-naut could be packaged with her helmet off, he agreed and would bring that issue up with Medicom.

I also mentioned that figures that fans wanted to see that were not made were:  Julius the Zoo Keeper, Bobby Porter's CORNELIUS (Jr) and Paul William's VIRGIL (both from Battle).
I told him that fans have also expressed interest in the MUTANTS from BENEATH with removable masks and fall-out faces. His comment: "There are no plans for additional POTA figs at this time."

So anyone that want s to contribute to this POLL, look at the list below, and next to each figure place your "GREAT-GOOD-LAME" votes.

              Thanx,

They're all great, Brian. They should sell them at "Toys R Us " instead of foisting the Hasbro stuff upon us. The way folks scooped these up despite the price is proof of that. But I try to be more discerning.

Cornelius - - excellent likeness (Bill Blake fell in love with it, and he knows a thing or two about Cornelius' likeness) but Cornelius has been done to death. I wasn't going to get him but I found the dark one- - - GOOD

Soldier Ape - - gotta have a soldier ape, gorillas a re popular; prefer Soldier Ape B because of the long mane - - GREAT

Lucius - - my man! Only Lucius ever done; excellent hair style - - GREAT

Ursus - - Of course, one of the most acclaimed likenesses of all; dead on - - GREAT

Zira - - another one that's been done a lot; no one has done her better than Mego, but I think she'd be a popular choice - - GOOD

Urko - - I'm very fond of this TV show character but didn't like the coloring of his Medicom; do Ursus and someone else - - LAME

Soldier Ape 3 - - the TV soldier? Same as with Urko, do Soldier Ape B instead - - LAME

Taylor - - Might bring non-Ape fans into the camp because of the celebrity likeness. A must! - - GREAT

Nova - - people loved this one and I think it's price skyrocketed more than any other. Another must! - - GREAT

Aldo - - one I would personally like but might be kinda bland to others. If the selection is limited they'd be better off with the soldier apes - - GOOD

Zira Astronaut - - Better choice than regular Zira because it's the only figure of her as an astronaut; uniqueness is the key - - GREAT

Taylor Astronaut - - Taylor as an astronaut has been done by Hasbro; however, the clean-shaven look is interesting; I recall people didn't like this one as well. If I have to make a choice, I'd pick loincloth Taylor - - GOOD

Caesar - - the "Conquest" or the "Battle" one? I'd say the "Conquest" one is a must (with a chain around his neck). I'd personally like the "Battle" one . - - GREAT

Caesar's Land Ape - - Yes! There's nothing like a gorilla in a snappy red jumpsuit. I forsee multiple purchases so people can create their own "Conquest" army. Gorillas are safe bet - - GREAT

Milo Astronaut - - my personal fave of the astronauts because it's the only Milo figure. If they only do 1 astronaut, make it him - - GREAT

Cornelius Astronaut - - People might want all 3 ape-o-nauts, but otherwise, gotta go with Milo - - GOOD

Greatest Ape - - Another must! He's not called the lamest ape or the goodest ape, he's the Greatest Ape - - GREAT

What am I saying?! Release them all!      - - - Jeff

Aintitcool.com has a good review of the script for the new "Star Wars', for those who are interested. Better read it before the "cease and desist" . There's a general review and one with spoilers. Sounds like a big improvement over the last one and Lucas even has a sense of humor about Jar-Jar. Looks like he's one filmmaker who listens. If Fox can do the same with "Apes 2" we'll be ready to rock.             - - - Jeff

Yes, I forgot about that.  In the BEHIND documentary they say the prop was made of plywood.  Of course, that is WRONG!!!  The icarus website tells the true story of the long, lost Icarus spaceship.

              .html
Here's one trailer I won't have to post on my site.

Next on Fox: ''When Good Jedi Go Bad!'' On March 10, the latest
two-and-a-half-minute tease for ''Attack of the Clones'' will hit screens --
but not the big silver kind. In a synergistic masterstroke, the Fox network
(sister to ''Star Wars'' distributor Twentieth Century Fox) will air the
trailer just before 9 p.m. EST between slightly abbreviated episodes of
''Malcolm in the Middle'' and ''The X-Files,'' making it the first ''Wars''
preview to debut on TV. ''We went to Fox [TV] with this and obviously they
jumped at the idea,'' explains Lucasfilm VP of marketing Jim Ward. ''It's a
win-win situation for everyone.'' The strategy isn't all corporate
back-scratching, insists Ward. ''TV hits a lot of eyeballs.'' And fans will
still be able to see the trailer in theaters -- exclusively attached to
Fox's animated ''Ice Age,'' opening March 15, and likely in front of
''E.T.'' and others later in March.

              Best.

Cornelius - Dead on likeness. A must have. - GREAT.

                Soldier Ape - GREAT

                Lucius - GREAT

                Ursus - GREAT

                Zira - GREAT

                Zaius - GREAT

Urko - An OK figure, but I agree with Jeff. It needs a repaint. - LAME

Soldier Ape 3 - I would buy repaints with the "V" and the "II" on the chest.
                - GOOD

Taylor - A must have character, but the figure sucks. It is too tall. One leg
is longer than the other (at least on mine) and it looks more like Landon
than Taylor. This one needs some reworking. - LAME

                Nova - GREAT

Aldo - An OK figure, but not essential. - GOOD

Zira Astronaut - I wish she could be resculpted so she could hold her helmet
                like the others. - GOOD

Taylor Astronaut - Still too tall, but less problems than the loincloth
                version. - GOOD

Conquest Caesar - I love this figure. - GREAT

Battle Caesar - An OK figure, but not essential. - GOOD

                Caesar's Land Ape - Gorilla - GREAT - Chimp - GOOD

                Milo Astronaut - GREAT

                Cornelius Astronaut - - GREAT

Greatest Ape - An awesome figure but it needs a repaint. I dislike the green
paint they used. It should look more like marble. Still....GREAT

Since I have all of the originals, I see no need to rebuy any of these unless
they have new paint jobs or have been reworked. Like most of you, I would
love to see new figures (Julius, Virdon, Burke and Galen are at the top of my
                list).

I'd have to disagree with her there.  The Medicoms look the most like her of any of the models or figures.  Maybe she saw the Astronaut one.  Which looks less Kim like than the original.  I guess they couldn't make her hair bigger and still get the helmet on.  But it does have a kind of Cornelius look to it, like she's his sister.

I respectfully disagree!  Ari's friend Leeta looked terrible.  That was the point at which I knew Burton had lost his mind.  No respectable director would have let her anywhere near the set even if she was John Gotti's daughter and Dick Zanuck's mistress at the same time.  I present as evidence . . . Exhibit A...
(see pic below, courtesy of Pentacles' Chimpette Directory)  Look at the difference in their lower jaw lines.  Look at Ari's ... nice and smooth.  Leeta's....Looks like what she is...an actress with a mouthful of dentures. It's as plain as the jaw on her face!
And I agree with the nose assessment.  Anatomically correct doesn't make it cute.  If you're going to anthropomorphize them by giving them hair styles and eyebrows, I don't see why giving them Zira's cute lil' nose would be such a stretch!

lot of fun, even for those with no taste who prefer Megos. - - -

Yeah, but a double chin is a unique touch you don't often see on a toy. Cornelius, too. And Zauis. I thought the Mego ape faces were great considering when they came out and that they're not Japanese.

                  Isn't Zira's double chin more of a Beneath/Escape thing?

Zira - - another one that's been done a lot; no one has done her better than Mego, but I think she'd be a popular choice - - GOOD

                  Are you Insane?  Mego's suck!

.html Ya, I love Heston's performance ...he was perfect for this part. This was a very complicated role and requires an excellent actor.  The character had to go through a tremendous transformation...from a loud smug ego maniac looking for "something in the universe better than man"  to a man in dispair that his ancestors had blown the hell out of civilization. Heston was perfect because  he had that George Taylor superior ego and was in great shape for the role so he was impressive visually.  I remember thinking when he fought the mute  in the outdoor cage that his fighting skills would be way better than the primitive guy's and I was right.... and as pleased as punch as an 11 year old could be.
