I... liked the movie. It wasn't outstanding, I'd give it 3 1/2 stars. Some
of the main characters actions were rushed, and that Mental Morlock guy was
pretty dumb, but I enjoyed the movie thoroughly.
I've been wanting to see the 1960 version for awhile, but I haven't got
around to it. I'll go rent it some time this week.
Oh, and what did you hate about it?

.htmlThis was not what some guy at FOX over heard. This was someone very
involved with the creation and marketing of the videos back in the
80s. Now who's jumping to conclusions. I think you just can't handle
the truth when it differs with your own misconceptions. A lot of
myths get circulated in fandom that just aren't true. These stories
spread and get twisted around to nothing recognizable from the true
facts. Here's one, when Star Trek VI was released several minutes
were trimed at the last minute (these were restored in the VHS
release). These scenes feature Rene Auberjonois who later played Odo
on Deep Space Nine. The story that got out in fandom was that his
scenes were cut so as not confuse the audience having two characters
played by the same actor. This story was total BS but many Trekies
sworn it was true even though Star Trek IV came out over a year
before DS9 premiered and several months before Rene was cast in it.
And I know this story is true cause it was told to me by a friend
that worked on both the DS9 and Voyager series.

Oh, about everything. I've spent the last few days re-reading the original story, and I don't know why they just don't try to do really faithful adaptations! Anyway, if you have a DVD player, watch the 1960 TIME MACHINE on DVD. It's the best looking version on video.

Beware the new movie "The Time

it is Uber Bad!
Now, I hope the idiots who made this turkey don't get

.html .htmlHate is a strong word. I love America and americans in general but there is an assumption that the world IS america, and that is a dangerous assumption.
I wouldn't say that. Some of our less than honorable leaders won't even make an assumption of what IS is. I'm alternating proud and ashamed. Some of my fellow Americans and Texans make me feel ashamed, at times, of being and American, and a Texan. As far as looking at the world as America, well I'm more worried about the Disineyfucation of the world than the Americanization of it. Some may argue that it's the same thing. I would disagree. Americanization just means you can take a vacation somewhere without getting ripped off, hijacked or kidnapped. But Disineyfuckation is what England did to Scotland. Fake tartans, fake culture, Fake Scots. I hope they get their country back. It's long over due. But if I go to visit some place and I'm just getting the tourist version of it, I may as well stay at home.<.html <.html

I do believe you figures are inflated and outdated. But even if everyone got out alive that's neither hear nor there. We should have been more active the first time they bombed it. And I think you're a little of the beam on the nukes. I don't think it takes balls to use thermonuclear devices, just stupidity. When you think about it, with all the nuclear testing ... WW III already happened! It just wasn't directed ant anyone in particular. I don't know who we'd nuke. Oh sure it sounds fun. But we aren't at war with Afghanistan and where the really bad guys are it too mountainous. Or Iraq for that matter get Saddam out of there and you're set! And North Korea...Well all they want is some decent food. Everyone should be free! Free to be what they want to be! As long as they aren't hurting anyone. And if they don't agree with that...well, as someone once said, chop
their head off, drive nails in them, and send it to their parents in a garbage bag! Okay maybe that's a little off the beam.<.html

we lost over 6000 citizens to terrorism in New York and that was
on U.S. soil.
I do believe you figures are inflated and
outdated. But even if everyone got out alive that's neither hear nor
there. We should have been more active the first time they bombed
it. And I think you're a little of the beam on the nukes. I don't
think it takes balls to use thermonuclear devices, just stupidity. When
you think about it, with all the nuclear testing ... WW III already
happened! It just wasn't directed ant anyone in particular. I
don't know who we'd nuke. Oh sure it sounds fun. But we aren't at
war with Afghanistan and where the really bad guys are it too mountainous. Or
Iraq for that matter get Saddam out of there and you're set! And North
Korea...Well all they want is some decent food. Everyone should be
free! Free to be what they want to be! As long as they aren't
hurting anyone. And if they don't agree with that...well, as someone
once said, chop their head off, drive nails in them, and send it to their
parents in a garbage bag! Okay maybe that's a little off the
beam.

If you do have the money, it's only $50 and well
worth it. (The Super VCD plugin costs extra, but the standard VCD burning
capabilities come built in already, and that's really all you need to get
started anyway.)
Hope this helps.

I agree with Rory. If the Statue was the issue, why not dismantle the
Statue? I always assumed the Forbidden Zone was forbidden because of
the radiation. If it was otherwise, more would have been made of the

--Helen
In my scenario, the Sacred Scrolls were a collection of "scripture"
written over the course of several centuries (just as the Bible was),
with the first of them being written c. 2755 by the human-hating
opponent of the group seen in BATTLE c. 2670. The first of the "Sacred
Scrolls" are a "historical revision" of Simian history, throwing out
the stories of Humans enslaving Apes, etc., in favor of a doctrine
which becomes the "First Article of Faith": that "the Almighty created
the Ape in His own image... and made him the lord of the planet"--and
"refuting" the notion that Humans ever had a prior, superior
civilization.
The "last" and "greatest" Lawgiver (for the revisionist human-haters)
writes at a time when Apes have been ruling over subjugated Humans
(i.e. the TV-show era, c. 3085), and he hates humanity so much that he
calls upon all apes to drive humans back into their jungle lair,
"...for he is the harbinger of death" (Sacred Scrolls, 29:6). This
particular Lawgiver (THE Lawgiver, to those who follow his teachings)
leads an "exodus" of Apes away from the California area to the New
York City area (perhaps having been there on a previous journey,
scouting it out prior to the "great Journey"); he knows about the
Statue of Liberty out there, and knows that that "vast, barren area"
is incapable of supporting life, since nothing will grow there. He has
his own map of the area, and he himself sets the limits on where his
devoted followers can go.
Why doesn't this Lawgiver dismantle the Statue? How easy would that
be? Why should he risk having others in his Following (other than the
few who will be entrusted with "the Terrible Secret") find out about
its existence, since exposure to it will harm their "faith"? If this
group doesn't happen to have a butt-load of TNT at their disposal,
then blowing it up is out of the question.
Besides, it serves as a vivid reminder to the few who will be allowed
to know the truth about the prior Human civilization--the lineage of
Zaius will hand down, father-to-son, not only the academic knowledge
about the true Past... but will also be shown--at a "coming-of-age"
ceremony similar to an "initiation" into a "secret society"--the
shocking MONUMENT to Man's downfall: the iconic Statue, in ruins...
Feel free to prefer Rory's interpretation over my interpretation and
scenario. Mine makes more sense to ME, however.
Patrick Michael Tilton
EARTH-TIME 3-09-2002

Rory, you're the one who seems to favor a PLANET-only outlook
(dismissing BENEATH as a "mess" and so on)... so you tell me: what
ELSE could Zaius' line ("... you may not like what you'll find...") be
referring to?
Well. . . . the fact that in the apes' pre-history the area that would
become know as the Forbidden Zone was highly radioactive and therefore
literally deadly might have A LOT to do with why it would be declared
Forbidden. It isn't necessary to believe something silly like that
apes know of The Statue of Liberty, and as far as Zaius' line, "You
may not like what you find," well that simply implies that he knows
Taylor will PROBABLY find evidence of his destroyed civilization, NOT
that he literally knows exactly what Taylor will see.

And I don't think we should. Very environmentally unsound those. Plenty of Daisycutters and Thermobaric bombs to do the job. Oh sure they may not seem as nasty as the nukes. But look at it this way...With a nuke, one white hot flash and that's it! Aside from the nauseating residual effects of radiation sickness. But with smart bombs you get lots of nose camera footage to show on TV and let 'em what's coming if they don't stay in line. Not that we should, but if we're trying to make a point... It hasn't been addressed yet (as far as I can recall), but one

that have an effect on the cognitive abilities of a population of

Yes, I have
thought of this and my supposition is related to an even more important
question: What did the mutants live on? What did they eat? Ponder
this; suppose all they had to live on was fungi, and suppose a large amount of
that was mushrooms, and suppose some of these mushrooms were of the psychedelic

Problems start when people aren't having a good week or when they choose to
get sensitive or take offense - which is easy with email.

An idiot.
Was this guy from Fox in the room when the decision was made? Did they
consult with him?
You have absolutely no evidence for your conclusion.
Don't try ramming your bullshit down my throat.
Find some real, genuine evidence and I may believe you.

this goes on in the film industry all the time. The term "Director's

.htmlIn answer to your first question YES he was in the room. He lobbyed
to have the Director's Cut that was released to TV stations issued as
part of the Playhouse series. He was over ruled by higher ups cause
it would cost too much to restore that print. I'm just stating fact
as they have been related to me. You're the one jumping to
conclusions here mate, just because this doesn't jibe with what you'd
like to believe.
PS I don't give a damn any more if you had a bad week.

.htmlYeah, the "rabbit scene" was filmed (there's a photo of it in Eric
Greene's book, from the Jacobs archives). So why are the bomb scenes
included and not that? In short, if Fox wants to work a little there's still
a lot of stuff out there to make this new release worth

"The Time Machine" was directed by H.G.
Wells' great grandson. You'd think he'd want to be faithful. But it was probably

Oh, about everything. I've spent the last few
days re-reading the original story, and I don't know why they just don't try
to do really faithful adaptations! Anyway, if you have a DVD player,
watch the 1960 TIME MACHINE on DVD. It's the best looking version on
video.

we lost over 6000 citizens to terrorism in New York and that

I do
believe you figures are inflated and outdated. But even if everyone
got out alive that's neither hear nor there. We should have been more
active the first time they bombed it. And I think you're a little of
the beam on the nukes. I don't think it takes balls to use
thermonuclear devices, just stupidity. When you think about it, with
all the nuclear testing ... WW III already happened! It just wasn't
directed ant anyone in particular. I don't know who we'd nuke.
Oh sure it sounds fun. But we aren't at war with Afghanistan and where
the really bad guys are it too mountainous. Or Iraq for that matter get
Saddam out of there and you're set! And North Korea...Well all they
want is some decent food. Everyone should be free! Free to be
what they want to be! As long as they aren't hurting anyone. And
if they don't agree with that...well, as someone once said, chop their head
off, drive nails in them, and send it to their parents in a garbage
bag! Okay maybe that's a little off the beam. Your use

cramming them all into summer. That's why "Lord of the Rings" did so well,
there was no similar competition. Oh yeah, they don't release their good
films in the summer either. Come to think of it, when do they release their
good films anymore? - - Jeff

I thought so.
But that's all right, we all believe you and we also believe you worked in
the World Trade Centre. Why? Because you say so James, and you would never
make up something like that, would you?
My anscestors came on a ship from Ireland looking for a better life. None

CONQUEST? Nope.
My belief has always been that "Breck's City" (and the 'province' that
he's governor of) is simply a 'city area' of a larger east coast
megalopolis, and that it is close to Washington DC, probably south of
it, but with access to the sea since it receives shipments of apes.
Dare I say it might even be on the upper shores of Chesapeake Bay?!!
(I dare! I dare!)
This east coast megalopolis would, among other things, be connected by
a vast subway complex.
EAT THAT, PATRICK MICHAEL TILTON THOMAS!!!
-- Rory
Hey, Rory, what's with the "Thomas" addition? Could it be because you
think that I "doubt" your interpretation(s)?
There are no explicit details in either CONQUEST or BATTLE to "prove"
whether or not Breck's city is "west coast" or "east coast"; I've
mentioned other reasons in earlier posts why I think it's in
California (so I won't regurgitate them here), but I will propose yet
another one: in 3085, in the "Central City" region (which includes the
ruins of both San Francisco ("The Trap") and Oakland ("The Legacy"),
there is an Ape culture which has inherited the same clothing styles
that were first seen in BATTLE, and unless the Urko/Zaius/Galen
peoples had migrated westward from your hypothetical east coast
origins (which there is no evidence either for or against), then it is
probable that the TV era Ape society developed in the same environs,
or at least near enough to the Caesar/Virgil/Aldo area. In 3085 there
is an orangutan named Zaius--who knows the Truth about the prior
superior Human civilization, yet purposely hides this from the masses,
just as his descendant will in 3955 (in PLANET and BENEATH). Now, we
KNOW that the TV-era Zaius is in the California area, and we KNOW that
the PLANET-era Zaius is in the New York area, and it is fair to say
that the latter is descended from the former, having been "initiated"
into the "Terrible Secret" by his father going back generation-after-
generation, and so forth. At SOME point, there had to have been a
migration of at least SOME of the Ape civilization from California to
New York--with the "House of Zaius" accompanying them, wielding some
form of executive power (since the Zaius-types were "in charge" in
Central City in 3085 and were also "in charge" in Ape City in 3955).
If--as you believe--"Breck's city" was on the shore of Chesapeake Bay,
then we would have to believe that there are TWO major migrations in
Simian history: the FIRST one from the East coast Chesapeake Bay area
to the California region (BATTLE-to-TV) and then a SECOND one from
California to near the New York area (TV-to-PLANET). I think it's more
probable that there was only one single major migration of Apes--the
"second" one, "TV-to-PLANET"/California-to-NYC.
Feel free to disagree, bud. But unless you don't count the TV show as
"canon", your hypothesis mandates the two migrations I've outlined
above--unless you think it's likely that the 3085-California group
could INDEPENDENTLY develop the same styles of clothing that Apes were
wearing near your BATTLE-Chesapeake Bay area group, without some sort
of "cross-contamination". Frankly, I think it's stretching it: the
distance from California to Delaware/New Jersey/New York is quite a
long haul, and I don't see the "separate" California crowd
coincidentally designing clothing styles that match those worn by your
"east coasters".

It hasn't been addressed yet (as far as I can recall), but one
wonders: How do the "mutants" acquire their telepathic abilities? Is
it the result of radiation exposure? Could it be that exposure to
radiation is only ONE factor in the emergence of that mentalic
"mutation"? How about living UNDERGROUND? Might that have an effect on
the cognitive abilities of a population of people?
Yes, I have thought of this and my supposition is related to an even
more important question: What did the mutants live on? What did they
eat? Ponder this; suppose all they had to live on was fungi, and
suppose a large amount of that was mushrooms, and suppose some of
these mushrooms were of the psychedelic variety. What do you think
that might do to minds over many generations with nothing better to do
but sit around underground and stare at each other?
THINK ON THAT, PATRICK MICHAEL TILTON THOMAS!!!!
I think it's more likely that at first the survivors of the Nuke War
lived on stored-up rations, because there had to have been some prior
warning that a Nuke War was imminent--the robed spokesman for "the
Scientists" (in "The Legacy") tells posterity that the destruction of
his world is now imminent, and his fellow "scientists" at the think-
tank (at the Oakland Science Institute) had the time to set up the
buried caches of "scientific knowledge" in various cities throughout
the world, as well as holographic projectors to steer discoverers to
those caches. People would have frantically building bomb shelters and
stockpiling canned foods, drinkable water, etc., during that same
"pre-War" time.
After the stockpiled food runs out, what then? What other edible food
might there be in the nuked-out city Kolp governs? How about those
Nuke-War-surviving cliches: RATS and COCKROACHES? Hey, protein is
protein, wherever you can get it!
Keep in mind, also, that "Breck's city" is on the coast (you think
it's EAST, I think it's WEST), and in the oceans there are plenty of
fish. Perhaps the city was built not only on the ocean coast, but also
on the banks of a river which empties into that ocean; if so, then
there might be freshwater fish accessible to them (I imagine the river
running beneath one part of the city, with hydro-electric power
generators making use of the flow of river water to supply the city
with electricity, and a local fishery to catch some of the fish in the
river).
So, then... RATS and COCKROACHES and FISH, and river water to wash it
all down. As Ace Ventura once said, "Yummy!"
Howzabout THAT, Rory?

.html Okay, the people from both the mutant and ape city cultures trekked
across the entire continent from California to New York for some
reason, with the mutants somehow lugging a nuclear bomb along the
whole way. In an unbelievable coincidence, both cultures begin and
end up only a few days of walking distance away from each other. But
maybe everybody wanted to be near the Statue of Liberty. Did you
write the Marvel timeline? You're a menace to society.
-Tom
Yeah, Tom, Patrick Michael Tilton Thomas is sure a menace to the
rationality of every POTA fan out there. But, you forgot, he's also a
walking pestilence. But, I think in the end he's just writing his
book for an audience of one -- himself.
Okay, Patrick, tell me please, what will be the point of your book? I
mean such things as novels usually have a beginning, middle, and end,
and are usually about something. Other than just 'adventures among
the monkeys' what's your book about?
-- Rory
*** The "mega-bigass-POTA novel" I'm working on will be about... well,
about all the sorts of things that interest me, philosophically,
politically, religiously, ethically, scientifically, and so on. The
"POTA saga" is a perfect "vehicle" for me to present my "take" on
things, since it never was just "adventures among the monkeys": it was
a Sci-Fi political satire, which had the balls to ruffle the feathers
of those bastions of Authority: Politics and Religion.
On one level, the APES series suggests that Man is inherently EVIL,
doomed to self-destruct due to his inner "beast" persona which has now
developed the ability to construct weapons of mass destruction. The
Apes are presented as if they are somehow BETTER than Mankind, since
they eschew higher technology--and thus avoid the threat of nuclear
devastation. HOWEVER--and I've mentioned this in earlier postings--the
Ape civilization is DOOMED despite this "anti-technology" phobia,
since it is ONLY through the use of constructive technology that a
species can perpetuate itself: eventually, the Sun will run out of
hydrogen, and when THAT happens, the Earth--even IF no "Alpha Omega"
bomb blows it up--will DIE, taking along with it ANY and ALL
intelligent life forms dwelling upon it. You can't escape that fate
unless you have SPACE TRAVEL, and you don't have that unless you
develop TECHNOLOGY. The Zaiuses of the Ape world hate ALL high-tech,
since the use of destructive high-tech turned a "paradise" into a
"wasteland".
Are humans to blame for the fact that they evolved intelligence from a
long history of predatory ancestors? Is it even possible for tool-
using intelligence to arise in a species that does NOT rise up through
the combative arena of natural selection? What if ALL intelligent life
throughout the Galaxy (and the Universe) had its beginnings in animal
savagery? If that's the case, then Taylor could NEVER find "something
better than Man" out in outer space--only, perhaps, a species of
aliens who are LUCKIER than Man, having "made it" past the "danger
point" brought about by the "nuclear genie" being let out of the
bottle.
That's the crux of the matter. I'm not saying that we should EXULT in
our savage past, but we should acknowledge that we are not responsible
for the way that Nature fashioned our Intellect. Our evolved
intelligence gives us certain advantages, and we should make use of
them in order to fulfill the natural goal of ANY species, a goal
enunciated in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution: "...to preserve
the blessings of liberty for ourselves AND OUR POSTERITY..." There can
be no "posterity", in the long term, if we don't escape the cradle of
our home planet. We NEED high-tech, and with it goes the danger of the
destructive uses that high-tech can be put. Sometimes the use of
destructive high-tech is JUSTIFIED, as when Truman bombed imperial
Japan into submission, in order to end a war that would have killed
more lives had it gone on and on and on, with a projected casualty
list in the MILLIONS had there been an invasion of Japan by America.
Our species is at the turning point in its evolutionary history: we
have evolved INTELLIGENCE, and our intelligence has led to the
decipherment of the secrets of Nature, via the "scientific method".
That method led Einstein to "E = Mc^2", which led to the Bomb. We
shall either end up blasted to dust or... we'll make it, and go to the
stars one day.
What culture was it that paved the way to this "turning point"? The
"Age of Reason" sprouted out of the Renaissance, and the political
thinkers who lived in that "Age of Reason" created a nation that
rejected the founding philosophies that had kept the human race at
"dark ages" levels--the "great chain of being" leading from God on
down to the chosen-by-God monarch, the aristocratic Nobility, the
serfs, and the disenfranchised "property"--the Slaves. Instead, the
founders of the United States of America rejected this religio-
political philosophy, in favor of a society founded upon the notion
that ALL human beings ("all men"--"men" being a term applied to both
genders when spoken of collectively, as in "mankind") are "created
equal" and endowed by "their Creator" (a theist would say that the
"Creator" is God; an atheist would say that the "Creator" is Nature,
or the "process" by which Nature brings new life into the world) with
"inalienable rights" to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".
When the Industrial Revolution kicked into higher gear it was no
coincidence that it flourished more prominently in America than in any
other country on the face of the Earth. The genius inventor Nikola
Tesla--a Serbian by birth--acknowledged this, when he said that "only
in America" could he have achieved the many things that he
accomplished--he treasured his American citizenship more highly than
many other things he had.
The POTA saga is about the Human Race, and it is particularly about
the United States of America (read Eric Greene's book for the
"Americanism" symbolism that is infused throughout PLANET, from the
opening shot of the Red, White, and Blue stars out in space--
reminiscent of the upper left part of the US flag--to the overly-large
flags on the ANSA uniforms, to the flag that Landon plants in the
sand, etc.). The first movie seems to be showing us that America has
somehow "lost its way", and that the end result of having strayed from
the "path" will be the destruction of civilization. How had America--
in the mid-to-late 60's--lost its way? Political assassinations (JFK,
MLK, RFK, Malcolm X, etc.), the "Cold War", race riots, "covert
government" at work in SE Asia and Central America--the "imposition"
of "American Imperialism" rather than the natural competition (i.e.
economic capitalism and political republicanism) which made America a
force to be reckoned with in the first place.
All these themes have been explored to a certain extent in the filmed
POTA saga thus far, and my own particular take on things fits in well
with it.
Is any of this enough of a "point" for the writing of a novel? I think
so, Rory. And, hey, POTA is my favorite film of all time... and I
wanted to write THE definitive "opus" that (re-)told the Saga, with
original additions provided by yours truly in order to make it all fit
together better (i.e. by "unflubbing" the flubs that previous writers
made, from Paul Dehn and on).
Whether or not anybody else thinks that my novel will be "worth its
parchment" is beside the point. It's worth it to ME--I'm writing it
for ME... and I hope others will like it, too, but I'm catering to MY
own particular interests here.

You bet your silly ass I don't count the TV show as "canon"!!! Hell, I don't even count the sequels as "canon." In fact, I'd like to load them all in a canon and blow them all to hell!
Remember this and hang on to it, or you might as well be dead: There is only the original. It's the only film with true artistic merit. It's the only film truly worth talking about. It's the only film worth remembering. It's the only film that counts! All the rest is monkey poo.

Okay, Patrick, answer this one: Is it or is it not true that exposure to radiation causes you to go sterile? If so, then how do the mutants reproduce? The answer is of course that they can't, which is another reason why BENEATH is so absurd a piece of Science Fiction that it not only shouldn't be taken seriously as Sci-Fi, it shouldn't be thought of as APES "canon." Skip it and just think of ESCAPE as the one and only sequel to PLANET -- all the rest are monkey poo!
Patrick, stop playing with monkey poo and come up with something original to waste your time writing about.

Patrick, seriously now, let me talk to you as one POTA fan to another. If you say that PLANET OF THE APES is your favorite film of all time, as it is mine, and since you are obviously very intelligent, then surely you must possess enough artistic sophistication to see that the sequels to PLANET cheapened and made coarse the ideas of the original, and utimately, since they were only made to soak more money out of the 'gimmick' of the first film, reduced the concept to cheesy kiddy fare.
Obviously you don't agree with this view or else you wouldn't be writing it for you. But you'd really be doing you a big favor if instead you tried to come up with an original concept to explore your musings on the issues you mentioned. Pierre Boulle has already literalistically done it with Apes, and 20th Century Fox has literally run it into the ground and even turned it into a fiasco with the Burton bastardization. Seriously, the world doesn't need more PLANET OF THE APES. Something original would be much more appreciated. I hope you understand that I'm trying to give you constructive criticism here.

I do believe you figures are inflated and
outdated. But even if everyone got out alive that's neither hear nor
there. We should have been more active the first time they bombed
it. And I think you're a little of the beam on the nukes. I
don't think it takes balls to use thermonuclear devices, just
stupidity. When you think about it, with all the nuclear testing ...
WW III already happened! It just wasn't directed ant anyone in
particular. I don't know who we'd nuke. Oh sure it sounds
fun. But we aren't at war with Afghanistan and where the really bad
guys are it too mountainous. Or Iraq for that matter get Saddam out of
there and you're set! And North Korea...Well all they want is some
decent food. Everyone should be free! Free to be what they
want to be! As long as they aren't hurting anyone. And if they
don't agree with that...well, as someone once said, chop their head off,
drive nails in them, and send it to their parents in a garbage bag!

While I tend to agree that nukes are over-kill,
they do bring about a fast surrender from your enemy. (Unless of course they
have nukes too. In which case, you better not nuke them or they'll nuke you, and
you'll nuke them again, this causing a chain reaction retaliatory strike effect,

And I don't think we should. Very
environmentally unsound those. Plenty of Daisycutters and Thermobaric

nukes. But look at it this way...With a nuke, one white hot flash and
that's it! Aside from the nauseating residual effects of radiation

show on TV and let 'em what's coming if they don't stay in line. Not
that we should, but if we're trying to make a point... Nothing says "We

I can tolerate ESCAPE (which is actually a good 'little' film), and to a lesser extent CONQUEST (which could have been very good if it had the budget it needs), but BENEATH, BATTLE, and the TV show are very painful for me to watch and kind of depress me. I appreciate certain elements in BENEATH, but for the most part that movie is such a mess and so completely goes off the deep end that I truly wish it had never been made. It bummed me out when I first saw it in 1970 and that hasn't changed. BATTLE is just so far removed from what continues to appeal to me in the original movie that I can hardly stand to even acknowledge it exists. I try to do as Roddy McDowall did and just forget about it, but ironically I am interested in getting this DVD of BATTLE from Alex, but that has more to do with the APES collector that I am than anything else. The TV show is so pathetic that I just ignore it -- I got so bored looking at it that I still haven't
finished watching the DVDs. The cartoon show, for some reason, doesn't bother me because it's just this mutant sort of thing and was meant for the kiddies. It's no good, but harmless. The new movie was a total disaster that I think in the fullness of time will show you all that the APES concept is over. Fox is going to bury it with no sequel. So, for me there is only the original that's worth hanging on to, that and the Boulle novel.

Actually, a few would. It may have been short lived, but the TV series has
its share of fans. It's well documented that ratings here in the UK for
example were pretty high, to say nothing of the various websites and fanzine
issues that have been dedicated to it.
The TV series has its fair share of flaws and certainly I don't think it's
on a par with the films in terms of quality, but it is fun and entertaining
in places and there are a small band of fans who no doubt would cite it as
their favourite.

Agreed - outside of the PotA films, The Time Machine is one of my favourite
films. The poor reviews are making me wonder however - which of my favourite
films will be the next to suffer a God-awful remake?

Wasn't it held back already because certain scenes had to be re-jigged
post-Sept 11?

Although still pretty bereft of any extras, I've heard that the UK release
of the box set featured anamorphic transfers. I've not seen them myself, can
any of my fellow Brits confirm?

.htmlI agree with you about Conquest and Escape being the only decent
sequels. And the TV show is very painful to watch at time but it's
still better than the remake.
I was wondering if you could ask Joe Russo a question for me. I
remember reading an article back in early '74 about one of the
concepts being considered for the TV series was to pick things up
directly after Battle. Roddy would play Caeser. Fred Williamson was
going to play MacDonald and Ricardo Montalban would appear in
flashbacks as Armando, ala Kung Fu. I don't remember where I read
this, it was almost 30 years ago and no one I know in the industry
ever heard of it. Maybe the writer at the time was just making this
up but I'm wondering if Russo ever came across this in his research.

Yes, I've read that they are. We have DVD players here that will play the Region 2 PAL DVDs (such as the APEX AD-1500), but am I running out to get one so that I can order the U.K. POTA boxed set from Amazon.uk? No, because I would then have to get a 16X9 TV. I simply don't want to spend the money on it right now. Besides, I think when Fox does the 5 Star Edition treatment they'll improve what's come before. So, I will wait.

You can't argue with success. "Apes" was the
money picture and it worked (though it would have made even more money if people
actually liked it). "Moulin Reem" was the prestige picture and it worked (lots
of Oscar noms, Fox is getting pats on the back for taking a risk and it was
profitable to boot). Can't argue with success there.

I blame
higher-ups at Fox who also greenlighted MOULIN ROUGE and think that's what
kind of movies people want to see. That speaks "reems" as to what kind
of mentality we're dealing with here. (Get it? "Reems")

Joel Siegel said on Good Morning America that they
got H.G. Wells' great grandson to direct the movie, but that they should have
got the great grandson of Orson Welles.
I thought that was pretty
witty.

Well there's the rub, isn't it? Thank the

all those bombs are cold to the touch.

Then why have thousands of them around if your
never going to use them? You'd think a few hundred would be enough for a
deterrent considering just one of them can level the largest of cities in an
instant and kill thousands more people farther away by radiation.

we lost over 6000 citizens to terrorism in New York and
that was on U.S. soil.
I do believe you figures are inflated and
outdated. But even if everyone got out alive that's neither hear
nor there. We should have been more active the first time they
bombed it. And I think you're a little of the beam on the
nukes. I don't think it takes balls to use thermonuclear devices,
just stupidity. When you think about it, with all the nuclear
testing ... WW III already happened! It just wasn't directed ant
anyone in particular. I don't know who we'd nuke. Oh sure it
sounds fun. But we aren't at war with Afghanistan and where the
really bad guys are it too mountainous. Or Iraq for that matter get
Saddam out of there and you're set! And North Korea...Well all
they want is some decent food. Everyone should be free! Free
to be what they want to be! As long as they aren't hurting
anyone. And if they don't agree with that...well, as someone once
said, chop their head off, drive nails in them, and send it to their
parents in a garbage bag! Okay maybe that's a little off the
beam. Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to the Yahoo! Terms of
