Yeah, that's it in Schaffner tribute documentary.  Jerry Goldsmith can be pretty funny.  What did you think about his story about what music finally got Noriaga (sp?) out of the Vatican embassy in Panama?

I have two Lawgivers because they're so cool!  I have one I've taken out of the package and keep next to my PLANET DVD as a kind of display.  His left arm is a little short too, but not too much.  The other one I'll keep "mint on card."  Which Taylor is it that you have a extra of?

I guess that's a kind of flop, but still I don't like thinking it was a flop, just not very good.  At least it's made the original look that much better.

It wasn't really a flop, it made money and all, not as much as the studio would have liked, but then they should have helped make a better movie!  It was a good movie.  But with as much expectation as there was on this film it couldn't have lived up to it, not unless it much better.  It was not a great film.  Not even close to greatness.  Had it been Great, people would still argue that it wasn't as good as the original.  But it certainly did not blow anyone way.  Over the age of 13 that is.

Yeah why did they drop the shopping theme?
Was it not a Goldsmith composition?

I don't know why that wasn't in the suite on the PLANET CD.  I guess because it was so different from the rest of the score.  Of course, it is Goldsmith.  It's on the bootleg I have (which was copied for me by Joe Russo), but unfortunately this bootleg of the entire score is in mono.  At least the suite is stereo.

Hey don't feel bad.  I bid high on the then never seen Beneath Kim Hunter

Hey, how about that "rare" Lawgiver poster some guy is selling from Australia.  I paid $60 for mine, and I still see them popping up on eBay from the same guy all the time.   I rarely go on eBay anymore, and if I do I just look.

The Loincloth Taylor. At least it looks more like Heston than the

I've made my peace with the new movie. It's been trashed so much so it's not like they got away with it (well, maybe they did moneywise). All the criticism showed the Zanucks of the world that people expected more from the name "Planet of the Apes" and it hasn't stayed popular all these years just because it had cool makeup. That's the nice thing, that people called them on it.                 - - - Jeff

Funny, but as much as I hate the new movie I wouldn't call it exactly a flop.  It's made money but everyone knows it stinks.  I guess that's a kind of flop, but still I don't like thinking it was a flop, just not very good.  At least it's made the original look that much better.

I have one Lawgiver but I took it out of the package because I thought it looked dumb in it (plus if it gets scuffed or something you can say, "Hey, it's a statue. It got chipped"). I have the rare Soldier Ape "B" loose, standing next to the Lawgiver. And the rest are mint in package. Because of the price and not much articulation, that's where they'll stay. But the Kubricks are loose, of course. Maybe I'll run through the streets yelling that, "The Kubricks are loose!" People won't notice any difference from my usual behavior.   - Jeff

I have a tape of that movie.  I don't think the cast is bad, but that the script wasn't that good.  You can sure tell a photographer directed it -- lots of arty shots.  McDowall did a pretty good job.  I think he didn't direct again because he just didn't have the fire in the belly to do it.  It's also very depressing if the movie gets butched by a distributor or is ignored.  I think I read someplace that McDowall often suffered from depression.  He was very depressed when the POTA TV show was cancelled.

Okay, so the nuclear war happened in the 20th century (Fox), but some humanity survived and keep the apes as slaves until the apes got too smart for them and took over.  Hey, Cornelius never mention in ESCAPE that the nuclear war was mentioned in the "secret scrolls"!   Why do we have to assume the ape take over happened before it?  The events in CONQUEST were in just one city.  What about the rest of the country and the world?   And just what did bring about the nuclear war?  Apes revolting?  Lots of groups in the world are revolting (Boy, are they!), but we don't start nuking everybody.  I think there's a movie missing between CONQUEST  and BATTLE.  Maybe Patrick would like to fill in that gap, but I'll probably hate what he comes up with.

The elusive Chuck Heston. I have a hardcover copy of Eric Greene's book signed by a lot of folks ( Joe Russo signed it yesterday). I just had to get Heston to sign it. I went to a signing he did at the Nixon Memorial but he would ONLY sign his own books. I even bought a copy of his book about the Bible as a Christmas present for my cousin, but even though I made a purchase he still wouldn't sign it.
He was at the 30th Anniversary party in '98 and I was about to hit him up for an autograph but somebody beat me to it and I just didn't have the heart to ask him. He wasn't there to sign autographs (but I got Kim Hunter's, which is rare in these parts).
Finally, in April 2000, he did a convention for charity, along with Linda Harrison. I brought Natalie Trundy along and she wound up being an unexpected extra for people who had "Ape" items. Anyway, he finally signed it and was a good guy. He stayed an extra 90 minutes because the line was around the block.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I also have a wrapper from the original Topps cards and a box that held them for display.  I find stuff from '68 the most interesting.  Too bad there's not more of it.  Just the posters, cards, paperback tie-in, and the LP.  I wore my LP of Goldsmith's score out, but I still have it.

I agree with that, I'd rather see an item than own it. Chris Sauseville's
"Apes" collectibles book chilled my enthusiasm for buying the pricey
"original" items. They're all in there and it's very compact. That's my
advice to new fans on the hunt...just buy his book. A picture is worth
thousand dollars.
I said before that my collection is nothing to write Ape City about. But I
do have one item I forgot to mention. Back in April 1994 the QVC shopping
channel had a Sci-Fi week (my memory is so good because I'm taking this info
from article I wrote about it back then). There was a night of "Star Wars"
collectibles, the same for "Star Trek", a night of fantasy art and...a night
of Fox sci-fi items. They had Fox archivist Alan Adler as guest ( I taped
the whole thing on VHS; I still have it). They had a reprint of "The Day the
Earth Stood Still" poster (made from Adler's original) signed by Robert Wise
for $39. They had matted "Aliens" holograms for $29. They had uncut sheets
of "Star Wars Galaxy" trading cards for $41. They had miniature version
movie posters in lucite ("the Fly" (original), "Day the Earth Stood Still",
"Fantastic voyage" and POTA) . I don't have the price for those listed but
the production run for each was limited to the year the came out, so POTA
was limited to 1968 pieces.
Still with me? There was a b&w lithograph poster of Cornelius for $19.75
(a picture of it is in Sauseville's book. But what I bought was "The POTA
Collection", a set of 4 production sketch reproductions (the ship, ape city,
ape buildings and the ape alphabet) plus a T-shirt of the original poster,
all for $30. Limited to that night only, with a certificate of authenticity
from Fox. I know collectors who seem to have everything, but usually they've
never even heard of this. Did anyone else get this? I guess this is my
rarest item. - - Jeff

Yeah, I thought that was very touching, some of the stuff with Fauna. And an interesting thing to "Ape-ize" instead of just running from gorillas. But the ending wasn't that good. The endings were the weak part (except "The Good Seeds" which had a unique way to get them out of their fix). Well it sure has not made POTA collectibles MORE valuable.

The thing is, as soon as there is talk of a remake, the classic stuff goes through the roof.  If the remake is a success and makes people want to get on the franchise wagon (and you would have to say POTA 2001 did NOT, and therefore flopped in the sense of selling franchise merchandise - eh Terry Hoknes?) then the classic stuff goes even higher, if not it goes to hell.

Hope that is clearer.

I've got to say again Jeff that for what it is supposed to be, a book about
POTA Collectibles, the only really good thing about the book is that it
exists. It does not list a LOT of collectibles, and it does not have photos
of some of the rares stuff (the radio, the drum kit, the bollo neck ties -
don't get me started). I think Sauseville's book is rushed and not very
thoroughly researched. I also hate the endless pages dedicated to T shirts
that are not even official release - and he puts them one to a page whereas
he has the better collectible stuff so small you can hardly see it.

It really could have been SO much better with little effort. Why didn't he
visit Joe Farr and photograph some of his collection which is huge and
nearly everything is pristine? It was rushed Jeff, take it from someone who
knows what it COULD have been.

Yes I ended up buying these from another collector.

I was SO disappointed by the "Ape Alphabet" - I thought it was going to decipher the glyphs!  Whst a load of crap that turned out to be.

No, I do not have this.  I have heard of it.  I can't remember what I was doing in '94 (other than writing letters to Fox BEGGING for Collector's Edition of PLANET on LD), but it wasn't watching QVC.

Is Michael still there? He must have been in that position for about 11
years.

Australia's own Ken Taylor has had lunch with the guy when he visited our
shores a few times. Ken, could you talk to Mr Dunn please? He may know
James' imaginary friend!

Hi Helen

Like I said there are more amazing collections around - I was just very
dilligent for a few years there. Nearly all the stuff listed is in the
original package and cost a fortune to buy.

The way it goes is, thing cost a lot until the serious ape collectors have
them.....then they sell for next to nothing and make us squirm. I bought a
pop gun (that no collector ever knew existed until it appeared on ebay) in
mint condition for about $250. This guy must have had about 50 of them and
now they appear on ebay for about $25. ARRRRGHHH!!!

So don't be embarrassed - collectors are insane.

Since the remake flopped, most of thgis stuff has gone back to being
reasonably priced.

What is "Go-Ape Billy's Stuff"?

I think there was very little interest in the book and that the publisher wasn't willing to put more time or money into it.

You can get to Go Ape Billly's stuff through the Apemania site. Part
of his collection is at http://apemania.com/Collections.htm . His
collection features the world's only known female gorilla costume!
He has costumes, masks and props from the movies and the TV series.
Certainly museum quality stuff.

There are other collections featured on the Apemania site, too. A
person (or Ape) could get lost in that place. Although some of the
links are outdated, it's worth the effort to click down through the
list and see what's out there.

Sigh.

Boy, Mikey, you nailed that one on the head!!!    Ever since we put up the Apemania website (back in '99?) we have come in contact with so many collectors all with different wants and needs (an personalities) that I feel I need to go back to school and get a degree in psychology to deal with them all.  Either that or keep a tazer on "stun" everyday of the week.

I tell you, they come up with some pretty strange requests.  Just when I think I've heard or have seen it all, someone will come up with a doozey.  They never cease to amaze me.

Now, excuse me, I'm being told it's time for my meds.

Cheers,

It's all relative. Now's the time to pick stuff up for a song. And then IF the sequels are good and generate belated interest, the clearance sale stuff will go up in value because no one will have them. Same thing with another Burton production, "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Sales were bad and then later people decided they like it and the original stuff skyrocketed and now "Nightmare" is a classic property.      - - Jeff

Funny, but as much as I hate the new movie I wouldn't call it exactly a flop.  It's made money but everyone knows it stinks.  I guess that's a kind of flop, but still I don't like thinking it was a flop, just not very good.  At least it's made the original look that much better.

Agreed. But like you said, it exists. There's certainly room for another
book. I thought it was dumb that he had 2 pages of pictures of scripts.
Whafo? I've seen Joe Farrell's (Joe Farr) stuff (he goes by "Apeholics
Anonymous", there's a picture of his stuff in Greene's book). It's
impressive. And then of course Michael Hellen's, which decorated the
Chambers tribute. And yours, sir. A little legwork could produce a killer
book. - - - Jeff

I think I paid about three times what you did.

I began my recolllection of apes in 1998 when EVERYTHING was priced around $100 (and I mean comic books, jigsaw puzzles and the relly common stuff).  In my childhood there was not a whole lot of POTA to collect - for some reason very little got through to Canberra (although Ken Taylor tells me that in Sydney, which is only about 200 miles away, they had a lot of ape merchandise).

So in my ignorance I decided in 1998 that I would collect apes because it comprised essentially the Mego stuff and a few other toys.  Man I was wrong - POTA is the first of the mega movie merchandising exercises.  I think that until Star Wars came along, no other movie/TV Series/Cartoon Series ever came CLOSE to having as much merchandise.  As I mentioned before, not only was there a lot of stuff around but the prices were all inflated.

So now that my wife and I are about to welcome twins into the family to join my other 2 children, and my thoughts turn darkly to "maybe I will have to sell the collection...", I take comfort in the fact that there is no need to - it is no longer worth selling!  But I must acmit that right now if I got the right offer it may be considered.

That's correct sir. I can't see a publisher taking the risk though, so I
would first focus on an apes collectibles web page where items are displayed
in and out of packaging and anyone who wanted to sell could add their
information so it would be interactive too. This way it could accept input
from other collectors who find new stuff and maybe after 5 - 10 years could
actually be printed by which time it should be fairly accurate and complete.
This is something I have always hoped to do, but I have my hands rather full
right now.

I know this has nothing to do with apes but I'm trying to find a program that allows you to enhance and zoom in on photos while at the same time optimizing the photo. Kinda like that device in the movie Blade Runner that zoomed in on a photo and cleaned it up as it went in closer. Does anyone know of such a program??? I'm about to pull my hair out searching for something like this and I know there's software out there that can do it. I know Photoshop can do this, but it just doesn't do a good enough job. Would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks, Jeff.
I'll place it as a DVD easter egg somewhere.

How everyone forgets that the James Bond films were doing this all in
the mid-60s? Hundreds of toys and other items were produced back
then. They pioneered movie merchandising along with promotional tie-
ins as well as the concept of making each sequel bigger than the last
instead of spending less and less as they did with Apes.

I was just thinking about this again and movie merchandising actually goes way back.  I think the "Tarzan" movies and "Flash Gordon" serials had loads of tie-in products back in the 1930s.  I've even seen photos of The Three Stooges from the '30s with their own dolls, then of course there's all that Mickey Mouse stuff.  So, there's nothing new under the sun.  Hell, maybe even the Romans made dolls based on heroes from the gladitorial games!

I guess with you, Patrick, everything is either black or white. Well,
it's not with me. There is an APES series, each film does follow to a
degree the story that came before, but there are continuity errors
from film to film that as far as I'm concerned make what you're trying
to do with your maga-whatever-it-is ridiculous. So, I accept the
films as creating a series, but not a saga (which is defined as "a
long story with many episodes"), not seperate chapters of one story,
but seperate stories with related themes, characters, and events.
Although there may be more connective tissue between the APES films
(especially the four sequels) than say the James Bond movies, the APES
movies are a film series just like the James Bond or Frankenstein or
Tarzan movies. They're not a serial, they're not a saga.

-- Rory

***I beg to differ. Paul Dehn was the primary architect of the post-
PLANET sequels. Granted, he hadn't thought to write ESCAPE when he was
writing PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED (i.e. BENEATH), but as he
continued on, writing ESCAPE and then CONQUEST and the early version
of BATTLE, he gave the "series" a connective thread that any student
of mythic literature should be able to appreciate--and that
"connective thread" is the character CAESAR.
The 4 film sequels--all told--contain the pattern of an epic saga of
the quintessential epic hero, the son of Zira and Cornelius. The
traits this pattern follows are easily compared with prior bearers of
the "heroic pattern".
1.) The Hero has a miraculous conception: Caesar/Baby Milo is
conceived in the Future (in 3955), chronologically AFTER his birth in
1973; the BATTLE Lawgiver preaches that he had been "sent by God" in
order to save his people; compare this to the "mission" given to
Jesus, the divine role Aeneas was to play (in Virgil's AENEID), etc.
We know that Zira was pregnant during BENEATH, because she
specifically mentions that "at least OUR CHILD, WHEN HE'S BORN, won't
be breast-fed on bile!"
2.) The Hero would have an endangered life before/during/after the
time of his birth: compare the attempts on his life by Dr. Hasslein,
etc. with those against Moses and Jesus, and against Zeus in Greek
myth.
3.) When the Hero "comes of age", he fulfils the purpose of his
"advent"--to be a "savior" to his people. EVERY epic hero accomplishes
this.
4.) The Hero undergoes a symbolic/literal "death"; Caesar is
"electrocuted" on Kolp's order... yet he lives. Also, Caesar makes a
Descent into the Underworld, into Hell, in BATTLE. "This is the "hell"
our forefathers told of..." says MacDonald prior to their entering
into the subterranean depths of the nuked-out city Breck once ruled.
5.) The Hero communes with the soul of his Father, or an important
Ancestor during his trip to the Underworld, in order to learn about
the Fate of his people; think of Aeneas seeing the soul of his father
Anchises in Book VI of the AENEID and seeing the procession of the
future Emperors of Rome (culminating in Augustus), or Jesus going to
"the right hand of the Father" after his Death. In BATTLE, Dehn has
Caesar ingeniously descending into a sci-fi version of "hell", and
learning about the fate of the world from the Voices of his deceased
Mother and Father (their "ghosts" can actually impart Knowledge to
him).

Paul Dehn was not just a screenwriter. He was also a poet (I have yet
to read any of his poetry--his works are out of print, dammit!). As a
poet, Dehn knew enough about the ancient pattern of the Epic to enfuse
it into his PLANET sequels.
The PLANET OF THE APES movies IS a Saga. The Epic story of Caesar (re-
told some seven centuries after the fact by a "Lawgiver") is the glue
that holds it all together.

I don't think James Bond went as far as "Dolittle" of "Apes" in terms of
amount of stuff or in dumping it on the market all at once. I know that "Dr.
Dolittle" was the first movie to release trading cards at the time of the
movie's release. There were movie cards before, like "King Kong" and, yes,
James Bond, but they were released years after the fact. And "Apes" was a
close runner-up. That took a little confidence instead of waiting to see if
people like your movie before selling cards. Jacobs was a pioneer in that.
The norm was cards based on TV shows, which had a continuing
audience. - - Jeff

Maybe they didn't do cards but they did alot of everything else from
models to toys to both men and women's cologne. Corgi has been
producing Bond toys for 40 years. They also pioneered using a hit
record movie to promote a movie. Remember the cards & 1 or 2 other
items were the only Apes items available for years. Most of the
classic Apes stuff, like the Mego figures, the game and puzzles, came
out around the time to the TV show. They were doing what the makers
Bonds films hand done over 10 years before.

And Eddie is an "Ape" fan, as he said in a TV special.                                             - - - Jeff

Oh, just what we need in this world -- more humans!   Anyway, keep your Apes stuff, Michael.  When you're older you'll be glad you did.  (NOW, DON'T YOU WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD YOU THAT 25 YEARS AGO?!!)

They may even ban the bomb so nobody needs to disarm it - who knows?

I must admit that after recent events I sometimes wonder why anyone would
want to bring more lives into the world, but the what is the meaning of life
if it is not to give life?

I'm not sure how many of you saw the 20th Anniversary show for E.T. last night, and I didn't get to see the beginning, but I swear that the narrator was James Naughton.  I had a friend tape it for me, so I'll comfirm it when it comes.

The Planet of the Apes HBO Special, found on the DVD release.

With DVD players going for the same price as a VHS player, who on earth

Looks like Fox is trying to squeeze every penny out of VHS before it finally
disapears. I just hope they use this money to finance the sequel. Then, I

I think, Lucas, re-released Star Wars half a dozen times on VHS before he

How everyone forgets that the James Bond films were doing this all in

My favorite apes collectables are the Marvel apes magazines. I only started
buying these half way through their run and didn't get a complete set until the
1980's. The best thing about them is the huge set of articles and interviews
you can't find anywhere else. The next best thing are the marvel adaptations
of the movie scripts. By reading them you notice what was left out of the
movies. e.g. In the PLANET script when Taylor claims to be from another
planet Dr. Zaius asks "Then why do we both speak the same language?".

My next favorite ape collectables are the Medicom Kubricks, and then
the 6" Medicoms. The Kubricks have cool accessories, and you can swap
heads to make new chars such as Astronaut Brent. Plus the Kubricks
have 4 extra characters not in the 6" Medicoms. (Julius, Brent, mutant
soldier, and Mendez 26). As for the 6" Medicoms, I've been waiting for them
my whole life. I spent a fortune collecting the whole set and the Kubricks.

I also have some of the comics, including the 1970 Gold Key Beneath adaptation,
and both sets of Hasbro figures.

I have to agree. In particular, the dial telephone is proof positive that
the ruins of NYC in BENEATH were from the 20th century. In addition to that
we also have clues in PLANET, and even in ESCAPE, that the destruction in the
original timeline was, like altered BATTLE timeline, also in the 20th century.
In PLANET Cornilius dates the human artifacts as being 2000 years old. In
ESCAPE Cornilius contradicts himself, saying that the apes were slaves for
centuries, but also saying they have spoken Engligh for 2000 years. Maybe he
just didn't have good information. Also, the Aldo in BATTLE was intended by
the writers to be the same original Aldo mentioned in ESCAPE, which is why
the movie makes much more sense that way.

Great post Patrick! In the past I've always agreed with Rory instead of
Patrick, but this time I agree (!!) with nearly everything Patrick says.
I have said before that I think Caesar was meant to be a Christ like figure
who purpose was to save the earth. By saving us from Aldo's original sin
he literally saves the earth itself and everyone on it. I see lots of
parallels with Caesar and Christ, but Patrick has pointed out things
I hadn't noticed before, like Caesars "death" and resurrection in CONQUEST.

One things I would like to point out in ESCAPE is that three of the characters
(Amando, Dr. Hasslein, and the President) openly wonder whether they are
doing God's will or not in relation to Caesar. The President also wonders
if history will compare him with Herod.

I also see the apes movies as an "epic saga", and not just a film series
like James Bond. That is, the story as a whole is much greater than the
sum of the individual stories. There is a lot more going on in the five
movies than the casual viewer realizes. Compare POTA to Gulliver's Travels,
Babylon 5, or Animal Farm, not Tarzan or Frankenstein.

Notice that the Lawgiver doesn't say God sent the "apes" a saviour.
He says that God sent the "world" a saviour. Which was literally what
he saved. Caesar's purpose was to save not just the apes but the
        humans too.

I still find it hard to swallow that Paul Dehn (who made so many careless
flubs) had the intention of making these great parallels to the
        characteristics of the great epics.

Yes, there is evidence there but it is also believable that these
characteristics were more coincidental than chosen.

Just got some new mapping software and thought it would be fun to compare the two map to Cornelius' Map.

          Tom,

          You've lost me here.

What is your evidence that the Aldo in Battle was intended by the writers to
be the same original Aldo mentioned in ESCAPE, and how would this make more
          sense?

Also, the Aldo in BATTLE was intended by the writers to be the same original
Aldo mentioned in ESCAPE, which is why the movie makes much more sense that
          way.

In the version of the (Corrington) BATTLE script used in the Marvel
adaptation, Caesar is listening to Cornelius talk. He realizes he needs
to change the future to stop the apocalypse in BENEATH, but says he doesn't
have any idea exactly what he needs to change. Then he hears Cornelius
explicitly mention Aldo, and suddenly realizes what he needs to change.
i.e. He needs to stop Aldo from taking over and becoming the apes leader
he was originally instead of Caesar. I checked this in my copy of the final
BATTLE script. Aldo's explicit mention was removed in a (post Corrington)
revision (during Dec 20-27 1972), making BATTLE harder to understand. If you
look at the appropriate page in that version of the script there was an
          erasure/whiteout of mentioning Aldo's name.

Aldo being the ape leader in the original timeline fits in perfectly with
the altered timeline, why the Lawgiver morphed from conservative bigot in
PLANET into enlightened liberal in BATTLE, and Caesar as a Christlike figure
saving the world from the destruction in BENEATH. It also ties into some
political satire in BATTLE about revolutions. About 6 months ago I posted
a 3 part essay of BATTLE that explains this much better.

I believe the Corringtons also intended the BATTLE Aldo to be the same Aldo in
CONQUEST, not realizing when they wrote the script that Aldo was changed
from a gorilla in the script to a chimp in the movie and most of his scenes
were dropped. The Conquest script has a scene (dropped in the movie) where
a human shouts "No Aldo No!" at Aldo, and so when we hear the Teacher
in BATTLE saying the same thing to Aldo we were supposed to be reminded of
Aldo's treatment in CONQUEST, giving Aldo more background and depth.

I had always assumed the Aldo metioned in the credits of Conquest was
one of the gorillas. Which one of the chimps is he?
