True. I find them both cute, but there's just something about Ari that draws my attention a bit more than Zira. I think it must be those eyes of Helena's. :o)

I can't help but think of that TV show a
while back, kind of an "X-Files" where they try to connect Roswell to every
major political event like the Kennedy assassination, Woodstock, Watergate, etc.
I think it was called "Dark Skies". Roswell is too easy. moink! - - -

Jesus H. Christ! Will someone please rid me of
this irksome POTA fan? Patrick, to say you think too much would be
a gross understatement. What I don't understand now is why you
complain about not having enough time to work on your "novel" yet you have
more than enough time to write these absurd postings? Have you no sense
of decency? Why do you plague me so? Isn't it enough that I have
to live with the corruption of the sequels, the TV show, the cartoon, the
comics, and that most wretched of bastardizations that Fox gave us last year,
but now I have to endure YOU throwing in everything from Roswell to ON THE
BEACH into the POTA mix? Have you no shame, you uber-fan geek boy?
Is there no spark of originality in that thing you call your mind? YOU

sketched - - sorry, Rory - - the others and maybe some buildings, carts,
etc. And yes, that is a leather chimp outfit at the beginning of "Conquest",
which is cool. Leather represents the rebel. Though it begs the question, if
Armando is so worried about Caesar being suspected of being the child of the
2 talking apes, why would he have him wear their clothing design?

Great! When I posted it APES had only three
votes. Thanks POTA fans. I think in the long run ol' Chuck is
going to be better remembered for APES than BEN-HUR.

True. I find them both cute, but there's just something about Ari that draws my attention a bit more than Zira. I think it must be those eyes of Helena's. :o)
True her dark eyes are compelling, if set a bit too far apart. But Kim's hazel eyes make her unique among chimpettes. And they have a sparkle that just shines. <.html

.html Well, I just got my Star Trek Next Generation 1st episode DVD set.
And I must say, they did a hell of a job. DVD quality, 26 episodes from
season 1 and on the 7th Disc, about 5 documenturies from the creation to
interviews to behind the scenes. OUTSTANDING!
They also included a CD-ROM that gives you quicktime trailers on all the 7
season episodes plus the scripts. AMAZING!
And this is only the first season. Can't wait for the following season to be
released next month. The set cost $106.00 at Best Buy, and well worth it. I
only wish Fox had released something like this for the Planet of the Apes
T.V. Series.
It's too bad, Paramount, didn't release Planet of the Apes.
Best.

There is room for one more story after BATTLE and my story would start like
yours. It would open with the Lawgiver's funeral showing humans and apes
listening to his words on the importance of everyone getting along. Someone
declares his words to be sacred. The mutant government, however, is
isolationist and prohibits contact with the human/ape civilization of
the Lawgiver. When the mutants are attacked by a third culture of
aggressive apes, the mutants win out but almost resort to using the
Alpha-Omega bomb. One of the mutants is in secret contact with a group of
humans/apes, and tells them how the entire world was almost destroyed!
This group works together to destory the Alpha Omega bomb, and after it gets
destroyed the resulting mutant cultural shock overthrows the Mendez dynasty,
rejects the old religion, and establishes contacts with the human/ape culture.

Perfect. My ending would be the same one too.
I would keep the TV show entirely separate. There would be an entire season
of guerilla war escalating into civil war, then a South African style ending
in the last episode. Due to the continued warfare Zaius and the conservatives
would be overthrown on the High Council by a faction led by Galen's father,
followed by a failed coup on Urko's part. The new council would grant equal
rights to humanity. Zaius would resign and Virden and Burke would be invited
to become the first two human members of the council.

Well, one advantage Ari has, is with her, you wouldn't have to choose.

Yes, I picture Ari being the type that would enjoy being in control and really getting into it with her partner. Like that Doctor said near the beginning of the new movie about that pregnant ape when Leo compliments Pericles on his, um, achievement, "Actually, the female was the aggressive one." I imagine Ari as the sexually aggressive type as well. At least that's the way I picture her taking me anyway. ;o) Hmmm, just where is that 'perv line' anyway? I think I might have just crossed it again. lol

.html Well, I still think going after Nova is more across the line. If you can't
talk to her she's just a sex object. And in the book Zira felt that way as
well. Ulysses was looked on as an ape because he could talk. Nova was
considered an animal and sleeping with her was thought to be beneath him. I
think talking apes would have the same status. Ari may not put Pericles in a
cage, but she's if she's going to shack up with some one it's going to be
Leo. <.html

But movies are making more money than ever.
The Oscars were pretty bland, but for some reason it didn't bother me. I liked
the folks who talked about the movies that hooked them. Tom Cruise's first
"impact" film was "2001" at age 6. Who'da guessed? The lucky dog got to star in
Kubrick's last movie. Snnock! - - Jeff

Blew who, Jeff? Anyway, for the first
time in years I didn't bother watching more than a few minutes of the

case of "Who cares?" I'm really getting pissed that movies are getting

Rory, you seem to think that my referencing of the Roswell episode is
somehow "absurd" and "unoriginal". My reason for pursuing it has to do
with the primary difference between the film POTA and Boulle's novel:
the latter begins in the year 2500 A.D., when an interstellar space
voyage is so far into our future that it isn't necessarily implausible
to imagine it actually happening... but the former (the movie) opens
with Colonel Taylor chatting away during a SHIP-TIME of 7-14-1972, and
he specifically refers to them having left Cape Kennedy six months
earlier--i.e. around 1-14-1972. January 14th, 1972. An interstellar
mission. A spaceship which leaves the launch pad in 1972! Only about 3
and a half to four years later than the date the audience in the
theater first saw this fictional event. PREPOSTEROUS!
It's a conundrum, let's face it. How in the bloody f*cking hell did
the United States (in the fictional "POTA universe") acquire the
ability to create a propulsion system capable of sending a spaceship
hundreds of lightyears across space-time, at relativistic "nearly-the-
speed-of-light" velocities... BEFORE THE YEAR 1972?!
For thematic reasons, the Serling/Wilson script changed the premise
from a 26th Century Frenchman (Ulysse Merou) accompanying an eccentric
Professor and his friend, to CONTEMPORARY AMERICA sending out a
mission led by a man who is disillusioned with his own society (which
was "on the brink" of nuclear war), etc. The cautionary nature of the
novel (Man's "ennui" leading to a fall from civilized status) is
radically altered in the film into the same sort of thing that
Huxley's novel ("Ape and Essence") dealt with: the prospect of our
civilization destroying itself via nuclear weapons, unleashed by our
inner "bestial" nature. But in order for the film version to have it
that the protagonist is an American astronaut from a future only 3 to
4 years away (!!!), they have to present a most implausible scenario--
that the USA in 1972 has somehow developed the ability to accelerate a
spaceship to "near-light" velocity. HOW?!
This is one of the major conundrums I had to face as I began to sift
the alternatives when concocting my over-arching plotline. I had to
ask myself: How could the USA accomplish this? Is it likely that human
ingenuity in the half-century prior to 1972 could produce an
INTERSTELLAR STARDRIVE technology?
Because the "events" in the fictitious "POTA universe" obviously did
not/will not happen, then we are dealing with an alternate universe (a
sub-genre of its own in modern SF), in which the USA somehow DID
acquire the technology to send Taylor (et al.) out across hundreds of
lightyears. But HOW?
Taylor mentions "Cape Kennedy"; this clues us in that President
Kennedy was a part of the "shared past" that our real timeline and the
divergent POTA timeline have in common. Cape Canaveral was renamed
"Cape Kennedy" in honor of the slain President (it was later changed
back to "Cape Canaveral", and the facility was named the "Kennedy
Space Center"). So, John F. Kennedy and his assassination are both
part of the history of the POTA universe. Yet the President in ESCAPE
is NOT Nixon or Ford, which means that the two parallel universes
diverge sometime between 1964 and 1971 or so, in some way.
The atomic bombs which wiped out Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the
product of a project that was first suggested to President
F.D.Roosevelt by Albert Einstein, whose theory of Relativity
(especially the equation "E = mc^2") made it possible. And yet, the
ANSA propulsion system seems to have been developed by that Science
Advisor/expert-on-Time Dr. Otto Hasslein, who doesn't exist in our
"real" universe. How did he acquire his know-how regarding the
technological problem of actually accelerating a ship to the
relativistic velocities that Einstein first postulated?
The notion that a secret government "think-tank" could have been
established in order to "back-engineer" the wreckage from the crashed
"Roswell" extraterrestrial vessel seemed to me to provide a somewhat
more plausible solution to this problem.
What IF the Roswell incident actually happened, the way the
eyewitnesses said it did? Jesse Marcel Sr., who was the first
government official to see the debris, told Stanton Friedman (and
others) before he died that the government's "weather balloon"
explanation was a cover-up, and that he was ordered to back up that
story (he was a good soldier, and he did what he was told at the time,
although at the end of his life he "blew the lid" off that official
lie).
It makes more sense to me that the US government (in the POTA
universe) could have had a team of scientists working on the "top-
secret" project to back-engineer the alien technology that crashed in
early July, 1947... and that one of the geniuses working on it--Dr.
Hasslein--had the brainstorm, the "eureka-moment", to understand HOW
the baffling machinery actually worked. After years of work, the
fictional ANSA group develops the technology until, in late 1971, they
are able to send out the Virdon mission to Alpha Centauri and then the
Orion Mission in early 1972.
You once asked, Rory, WHAT it was I wanted to say in my novel... what
would the point be, or was it just "adventures among the monkeys"? I
answered then that my book would be about all the sorts of things that
interest me (in ADDITION to the source POTA films and TV episodes).
Well, one of the many things that interests me is the whole notion of
extraterrestrial intelligent life, and whether or not "contact" has
ever been made, and what sort of agenda might alien visitors have
regarding the human species. Taylor tells Landon that "somewhere in
the Universe there has to be something better than Man"; in other
words, the POTA scenario already addresses the notion of non-Earthly
intelligence--the "superior" lifeforms that Taylor is searching for.
For reasons that are NEVER explicitly stated, Taylor's mission is out
to a star system that is 320 lightyears away from Earth. Why? Why not
just send them out to one of the nearest stars, like Tau Ceti, or
Epsilon Eridani? Why send them all that way, 320 LY? The fact that the
actual "canon" never clues the audience in on the REASON for the
Taylor mission going to that particular destination in Orion provided
me with the opportunity to develop a plausible reason for such a
voyage. Part of my plot involves the discovery by the US government of
not only the wreckage of a downed alien vessel (and WHY it crashed),
but also the reason those aliens were here in the first place and
WHERE they came from.
Whether you like it or not, Rory (and whoever else out there wants to
scoff at my plot-scenario), something out-of-the-ordinary did indeed
happen in New Mexico in July of 1947; too many witnesses have come
forward to describe having had their lives threatened by the military
for what they had seen and touched (i.e. actual debris from the Brazel
ranch) for it to have been "just" a mistaken weather balloon, or the
government's latest lie of it being a Project MOGUL device. I don't
pretend to know exactly WHAT it was that crashed on the Brazel ranch,
but I do know that the so-called "debunkers" have yet to explain the
death threats made by the military against civilian eye-witnesses, and
that element of the story goes far towards convincing me that
SOMETHING unknown was acquired by the Army, and that they felt it was
important enough to threaten to commit murder in order to keep it
secret. Besides, one of the major themes of the POTA saga concerns the
notion of Governmental Secrecy, and the "official lies" that are told
to the citizenry by those in "authority" over them. Zaius is part of a
group which knows the Truth, yet perpetuates an official Lie; the
State coerces its citizens to follow the "rules" (threatening "heresy"
or "apostacy" against any who might seek to explore in an area that is
"forbidden" to them). Breck never divulged to the people of his City
that he believed the Talking Ape child of the Ape-onauts was still
alive and fomenting rebellion--when the news announcer breaks the
story that "Ape Management is in the hands of the apes", and that they
are being led by a chimp who has acquired the power of speech, and
that he might be the son of Zira and Cornelius, "who came to us out of
the future" (etc.), Breck yells, "That IDIOT! Have him issue a
retraction; tell him that the talking ape has been apprehended and
executed" (etc.). Breck had thought that the problem had been "nipped
in the bud", that Caesar was dead ("But I saw you die!")... and
there's no indication that he had issued a press bulletin describing
the efforts of Kolp and Hoskyns, and Caesar's capture and
electrocution. Again, the government (Breck) keeps the populace in the
dark, keeping "official secrets"--which keeps the people ignorant.
Remember what Zira said when Zaius asked, "Why? Is 'innocence' so
evil?": "IGNORANCE IS!" "There is a TIME for Truth!" "And the Time is
ALWAYS NOW."
For that matter, does Caesar ever tell his mixed-race community about
the taped revelation from his dead parents-from-the-Future, that the
Earth will be destroyed in the year 3950 (as he heard it)? When the
Lawgiver, 600 years after Caesar's death, tells his story, it does
seem that this Knowledge about Earth's fate is included... but could
that be because Virgil (for instance) wrote down his version of the
BATTLE story and passed it down to his pupils, one descendant of which
eventually became the religious leader called "Lawgiver", who wanted
the people to have this knowledge? This theme (of "secrecy" for
reasons of "national security" vs. "full-disclosure" to the People
whose government it is, etc.) is one of the main reasons that the POTA
saga was not just a bunch of silly friggin adventures.
Do YOU, Rory, think that the Gov't has told us the truth about
WHATEVER really happened at Roswell? I, for one, do NOT. I love my
country, but I'm not stupid enough to believe that those in power by
and large want the public to be informed about all sorts of topics
that fall under the rubric of "national security". Our government
STILL has secrets from World War II that we may never know about (the
gov't admits this); the actions of our military over in Afghanistan
(and elsewhere) are, for the most part, hidden from public scrutiny--
whatever our media has passed on to us represents only a small
percentage of what's REALLY happening over there. Our Gov't told us
that JFK was killed by a "lone nut", and that there was no big
conspiracy... and yet the FBI/CIA/etc. files were SEALED until 2012
(or whenever)! It's like a little kid who tries to obviously hide
something behind his back, yet denies having anything.
President JFK (and his assassination) are a part of the "POTA
universe" history; the Roswell incident--which PRE-DATES the JFK
assassination--is ALSO a part of that history... and IF the Roswell
incident really was what the Ufologists say it was--the acquisition by
the US Gov't of ALIEN technology--and if such a scenario helps to
explain not only how the US could send out interstellar spaceships in
the early 1970's but also might account for the destination of
Taylor's mission to Orion (and, perhaps, somehow for the acquisition
by Chimpanzees, Orangutans, and Gorillas of the POWER OF SPEECH prior
to the "advent" of the Ape-onauts), then that's justification enough
to me to address it in my plot. I have YET to see anybody else's
explanation for Mandemus' ability to speak--and he's OLDER than
Caesar, mind you. What do YOU think, Rory, might be the explanation?
Did the enslaved apes get injected with the same "anti-retardation"
drug that they used in "Flowers for Algernon"/"Charly"? C'mon, cough
up a plausible scenario that explains this peculiar problematic detail
of BATTLE, I dares ya!

Rory... you're so trusting. All governments lie to their constituents.
The phrase "need to know" was coined by people in the military who
felt that only certain people should be "privileged" to have access to
certain information--and that ain't "Joe Citizen".
Face facts: the 1st explanation the Army had regarding the Roswell
event was stated in the press release that Col. Blanchard had Walter
Haut write up--that the Army had recovered a flying disc (one of the
scores of unknown aircraft that had been witnessed by hundreds of
people during the previous month--including the famous Kenneth Arnold
sighting, where he clocked a formation of the mysterious things flying
about 1200 mph over Mt. Rainier. Why the hell would a colonel in the
Army Air Force tell an underling to issue a press release like that
UNLESS he knew it to be true?
The 2nd explanation--after Blanchard's superiors realized that the
Press worldwide now knew that a "flying disc" had been recovered
(which was obviously felt to be NOT in the interests of the armed
forces)--was that somehow a common weather balloon had been mistaken
for a downed flying disc--an admitted lie, since their NEXT
explanation (the 3rd) was that it was a Project MOGUL balloon array.
Marcel--who was THERE, you 'silly ass', Rory--broke his silence well
after his retirement from the service; he stated categorically that
the debris was NOT anything we had developed, and the materials it was
made of defied any rational explanation they could propose (the
uncuttable "foil" material which could be crumpled up yet always
reverted back to its original form, etc.), meaning that they'd ruled
out the Russians as the source of the debris. Marcel didn't want to go
down in history as a friggin idiot who couldn't tell a weather balloon
(of which the Roswell base regularly sent up scores) from a flying
disc--he had to take the "fall", on orders pretending to have somehow
made a stupid mistake.
The government has NOT said that flying saucers don't exist; rather,
they've stated that they don't represent any threat to "national
security". Several writers have proven--via FOIA requests and
interviews--that the CIA has been studying UFO phenomena from the get-
go (the CIA was established that very year: 1947), although it denies
any interest in the matter.
Granted, there's a lotta hooey written about UFOs; but there are well-
researched, responsibly-written books out there (including one called
"Out There" by Howard Blum I think) which cover the evidence. You
should do us all a favor and read 'em before making a carte blanche
statement like "only silly asses think for one millisecond..." etc. If
you've established your view of the matter only by watching that DS9
episode, or by reading Weekly World News, you're depriving yourself.
But, hey, you probably buy into the Warren Commission's conclusions
regarding the JFK assassination (i.e. only Oswald, a "lone gunman");
only a "silly ass" would believe Arlen Specter's theory that a single
undamaged bullet could plow through JFK's body, Gov. Connolly's body &
wrist, etc., all the while zigzagging like a pinball.
Will "great apes" someday rule over Man? Oh, I doubt it... but it
seems as if SOME great apes rule over the yahoo chat-groups.

Ever hear of a dictionary? Anyway, a vivisectionist is someone who does surgical experiments on living animals. If you're someone who thinks animals have a right to be left alone by man, especially when it comes to whether or not they'll submit to going under the knife (which of course they can't knowledgeably consent to), then you care very much that surgery on animals not be done at all, or at least not be of an unethical nature. Those completely against it are anti-vivisectionists. The famous English writer H. G. Wells (maybe you've heard of him?) was an anti-vivisectionist and this led him to write the classic novel "The Island of Dr. Moreau."
I would actually welcome some thoughts from Patrick on this subject.

Ben-Hur? Is that the one where Chuck is really gay, but he won't 'give in' to Stephen Boyd, so Stephen decides to be a real bitch and make Chuck row a boat all day with a lot of other sweaty, half-naked men, that is, until the ship's captain finds he really 'likes' Chuck a lot adopts him as his 'son'? The one where Gore Vidal helped write the screenplay?
Never seen it.
Now, don't forget that "The Ten Commandments" is also on tonight. Talk about hokey! "Moses! Moses! You stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!" And Edward G. Robinson (the 'could-have-been' Dr. Zaius) as Dathan: "To hell with you, Moses! Yeah! We're praying to this Golden Calf, see! Yeah!"

Got any thoughts on vivisection -- and please, don't bring Roswell into it.
There is no mystery to the cow mutilations. They used to do the nuclear testing in that NM, specifically Los Alamos. So, all through Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado The Government fly's the black helos and snags a cow here and there. They have a laser scalpel kit and they take eyes, tongue, balls and bung . . . Whatever they need to test for radiation. What else can they do? Mr. Farmer, could we please cut up some of your cows to test for RADIATION? There'd be a panic! I guess they could buy them. But that's be kind of suspicious. Guys in suits buying one cow from everyone's herds. Then when they're done they dump the cow out of the helicopter. No footprints, no blood, nothing! Simple as that. And as you know Black helos make no noise. Either that or it's ALIENS!!! Ahhhhhh... Or Spontaneous Bovine Disintegration.<.html

Sure is hokey, but the DVD has a good documentary about it. On a par with "Behind the POTA".
I was thinking of getting the POTA DVD boxed set, but for a few dollars more I could get a DVD player! Maybe I should wait for a price reduction, that or for the next movie to come out, when they'll release the super expanded edition with surviving star commentary and producer & director commentary from beyond the grave!<.html

Actually, I looked this up on http://www.spam.com/sp/sp_fq.htm . Here
you will find excerpts from an interview with SPAMMY.
SPAMMY: "Jay C. Hormel wanted a name as distinctive as the taste, so
he held a contest. Kenneth Daigneau, an actor and brother of a Hormel
vice president, pocketed the $100 prize."
On www.spam.com there is a TIMELINE (Patrick and Rory, et al) that
you might find interesting.
I like it fried in BUTTER with those instant mashed potatoes and
overcooked corn -- just like we used to get in the hot lunch program
in grade school.

I have all things Kim...well except for a few new films, like A Price Above Rubies, MIGOG&E. I taped that and then taped something over it. I'll buy them sometime. And some of the TV movies like Bad Ronald and Born Innocent. And of course the impossible to finds, like Anything Goes and You Came along. But I do have almost everything even some of her TV guest appearances, like Colombo and The Magician, and her very first films. But there sill some holes to fill. If anyone has the American version of A Canterbury Tale, I'm still looking. And that training film she did for the Army Air Corps with William Holden.<.html

It's odd that Heston did the "Apes"
documentary but not the "Ben Hur" one. And I guess they had to pay him to do th
"Ben Hur" commentary. I'd think he'd be more interested in promoting "Ben Hur"
as his legacy. Maybe he figured since he was an "Apes" profit participant he
should participate. Spam. - - Jeff

Ben-Hur? Is that the one where Chuck is
really gay, but he won't 'give in' to Stephen Boyd, so Stephen decides to be a
real bitch and make Chuck row a boat all day with a lot of other sweaty,
half-naked men, that is, until the ship's captain finds he really 'likes'
Chuck a lot adopts him as his 'son'? The one where Gore Vidal helped
write the screenplay?
Never seen it.
Now, don't forget that "The
Ten Commandments" is also on tonight. Talk about hokey!
"Moses! Moses! You stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!"
And Edward G. Robinson (the 'could-have-been' Dr. Zaius) as Dathan: "To
hell with you, Moses! Yeah! We're praying to this Golden Calf,
see! Yeah!"
Oh, the films of Chuck!

Michael
Yes, I very much did that too growing up. I'd watch anything if it had Roddy McDowall in it. I also think that the obsession with PLANET is what turned me into a film buff because one thing would lead to another and another and another, a whole nest of movies.

1. Who is Charlton Heston?
2. Who is Michael Clarke Duncan?
3. Who is Roddy McDowell?
4. What is "Bridge on the River Kwai"?
And I foret the other one.Tomorrow on AMC is a special on '60's movies.

.htmlThe mag "Tomart's Action Figure Digest" published their poll results for
2001. Voted "Least Interesting Action Figure Line" was ..."Planet of the
Apes". They say, "Traditionally, the lines that sell well to kids - but lack
collector appeal - rank tops in this catagory. This year the top vote-getter
was a line that had a strong collector following". The mag guessed the
disappointing film and "poor production value" were to blame. Also worst
were:2. Pokemon 3. Eminem 4. Harry Potter ; another Tim Burton-flavored
line, "Beetlejuice", placed #7 (maybe "Apes" has rendered all things Tim
Burton "uncool").
They also had votes for figures that "fizzled". Eminem was #1, Harry Potter
#2. "Beelejuice" #7. Leo Davidson was #10 and Attar #11.
What lines were voted "Best"? I'm glad you asked: 1. "Tortured Souls" 2.
"Spawn" 3. "Movie Maniacs" 4. Simpsons 5. "Star Wars"
I still say that, divorced from the film, the "Ape" figures looked good.
What's wrong with them? They looked like the characters. As American figures
go they were fine. I think all the bad blood is coming from the movie.

The one I've seen is with the rifle - but either way, I still find the
