4 a month, though, I've heard. Probably depends how well the first ones
sell, whether they release all of them. Etc. - -

I, too, have seen Episode 2. I found it long and tiring. The last 3rd is
good but it takes forever to get there. The first 2/3rds is still "Phantom
Menace" territory (yak, yak, yak). The opening scenes were ripped off,
excuse me, homages, to "Blade Runner" but they got a little too carried away
with the action for it to be believable (chasing the assassin). Way too much
love story. I have nothing against love stoies but it didn't go anywhere,
like the puppy love in the new "Apes"." I want to, but I can't, but maybe if
it's a secret, but NO! OK, maybe."
I didn't buy the scene with the mother but I liked the intense
pseudo-Vader stuff and especially the scene where he confesses what he did
to the Sand Yokels. Makes me hot for "Episode 3".
The theatre exploded when Yoda fought. I found unbelievable the way he
bounced around like that; the continuing saga of CG overkill.("Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles" did it better). But I like an audience to go wild in
a theatre and that scene paid off. The final 3rd, worth the price of
admission, but the could've trimmed the early stuff. Favorite scene: the
diner, with that big green buddy of Obi Wan's. Again, another so-so script.
But Lucas says the next one is going to be so dark and tragic that audiences
will run from the theatre, so my interest is still peaked.

I don't know if I'd say the new "Star Wars" was better than POTA. Both
left me feeling kinda numb, all the effort wasted on people who can't write.
POTA probably had as many good "moments" as "Star Wars". The latter's
palette was bigger, so it was more of a knockout visually, but I give "Apes"
points that at least it was filmed lived, not built up in a computer over 2
years. Haven't seen Spidey, the CG on that doesn't look believable (like
Yoda fighting and apes flying around, they gotta learn to pull back).

I thought Episode II was absolutely amazing.  It blew me away.  I didn't find it the least bit slow or boring.  I think it is better than any other SW movie (even TESB).   I had no idea it was gonna be so good.

The battle was a highight, agreed.

Seeing the origins of Fett and the Stormtroopers was an unexpected bonus
too.

And it is kinda cool to watch a "nice guy" turn evil!

And Amidala had her high beams on a few time (must have been cold!).

So, Mr all grown up Ken Taylor, explain how a guy in his mid 30's who
collects toys could have "grown out of" ANYTHING!!  You ain't fooling me.

Can we agree that, compared to that shit Burton churned out, Star Wars
deserved 12 Academy Award nominations?

Story wise, the moive is really good. I have too admit that. It does explain
a lot leading up to the original trilogy. (boring at times, but otherwise
good info) Now visualy, it is a CGI overkill and overdose. Just too much for
me.

And I agree with, Jeff.
At least POTA 2001 was all real sets and makeups. And low and behold you
have Tim Burton's opinion on the DVD commentaries about CGI overkill.

And you know what?
He was so right.

Star Wars Episode 1 and 2, is just a freaken CGI nightmare.

The high point of the evening, seeing the trailer to The Matrix 2, for 2003.
And that was about it.

Best.
Al

Wouldn't it be funny if Lucus re-releases all 3 episodes 10 years from now,
as he did with the original trilogy, but this time replacing all CGI with
    real sets and charaters. :o)

    Now that would be funny.

I enjoyed it. I like it more than Menace and Jedi, but Empire will still
always be my favorite. I didn't like the 'bug' scene. SPOILER - If you're
going to cut a hole in a window right by Senator Amidala, why not just put a
gun through the hole and shoot her? Bugs schmugs.

There was some good trailers: "Matrix 2", "Men in Black 2", even
"Undercover Brother" (a black Austin Powers). That's what Hollywood does

Lucas is supposedly filming new stuff during these prequels to put in the
original 3. I guess they'll be Special Special Editions on DVD. I've heard
they're on preproduction on "Indiana Jones 4", which will come out in 2004,
then the last "Star Wars" in 2005, a kind of "This Is Your Life". Then he
turns 60 and does experimental films the rest of his life. That's the plan.
        Etc. - - - Jeff

So did Harrison Ford sign up for Indiana Jones 4?

Yeah, Ford, Lucas and Spielberg have all wanted to do it but the stumbling
block has always been the script (though that hasn't stopped other Hollywood
        franchises). Now they have a story they like and a script is being written;
there's been reports of locations scouts in Arizona. Sounds like they're
doing it so Lucas can wrap up "Jones" and "Star Wars" at the same time. Sean
Connery will return and there's supposedly a scene with the girlfriends
(Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw). Even Pat Roach, that big bald dude he fought by
the plane, will be back. Sounds like a class reunion. Pencil me

One more thing and then we'll get back to POTA. I've heard they're filming
"Mad Max 4" in Africa this fall, and that Mr. Gibson wants to do it. I'm
looking forward to that one. "Mad Max" was the POTA of the '80's for me (end
of the world, leather outfits, bad attitude). I feel like I'm dying and my
movie life is flashing before my eyes. Hollywood won't rest until it brings
everything back. Etc. - - Jeff

Speak of the devil, www.comingsoon.com has an item that Frank Darabont
will write "Indy 4". Of course he's the director of "Shawshank Redemption",
"The Green Mile"(starring Michael "Attar" Duncan) and was one of the
finalists to direct "Apes" before Burton got the gig. And he has a
collection of Mego "Ape" figures. Wrote for the "Indy Jones" TV show as
        well. But I digress. Etc. - - - Jeff

Sorry, I'm sure everyone's tired of box office reports but this is pretty
phenominal. No surprise, "Star Wars" was #1 with an estimated $116 million
over the 4 days and an $86 million weekend. But Mr. Spidey, in his third
weekend, with everyone apparantly having seen it twice already, took in $46
        million, for a grand total of $286 m. That's almost $100 m. a week. At this
rate, if there's an "Apes" sequel they will be jumping around in red and
blue costumes and clinging to walls. I wouldn't put it past Fox.

I've heard they're filming "Mad Max 4" in Africa this fall, and that Mr. Gibson wants to do it.

I had heard they couldn't afford Mel now.  Did they come to an agreement on his salary that will fit into the budget?  Is he going to take a cut?  Or did they get a bigger budget greenlighted?

Well, there was a quote from Mr. Gibson, I don't remember where I read it, where he said he wants to do it but the bureaucracy is getting in the way. From what I heard, the plot would be about his son and he wouldn't star but he'd be around. But if they can shoot in Africa it sounds like their budget ain't bad. Etc. - - Jeff

        Thanks Jeff.

Just relised most of the responses I made today went to individuals
and not the group - sorry! When I send from work it goes out from my
server's website and it does not automatically go to the group.

I'll post something on the official site to ask who the fans need to
get in touch with. You never know.

Go to the "Apes Insight" section. There's 3 choices. "Aquire" allows you
to buy the video (how thoughtful!). "Discuss" is the message board.
"Research" shows an elaborate timeline of the "tsunami". Pretty cool update
to hawk the video. But they don't mention Mr. Quick's "The Fall" book.

.htmlBut if they can shoot in Africa it sounds like their budget ain't bad.

Somehow I doubt it.  Austrailia use to have a a fantastic film making community.   It's probably cheaper to make it in Africa than in the Hollywood jr that Fox has turned Austrailia into.

They haven't taken over the country yet.

There was supposed to be a Baywatch series filmed last year but the Bondi Beach community banded together and threw them out!

        That was pretty funny.

Maybe he should direct Apes 2.

"Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" are two of my all time favourite

Mel is nothing with out the car.  The Car!!!!

The Last of the V8 Interceptors!  Ahhhhhghghghghghg . . .
Sorry, I'm not really a car freak, but that one makes me drool.
I'd take it over the Mach 5 or the Batmobile anyday.
Shame the blower cut-out wouldn't work proprerly
and they had to fake it with an electric motor.
Look for the battery in the bucket in the first garage shot
        in the original Mad Max.

Maybe there's something to that. I consider that perhaps the worst shot in the movie, the photographer with his mouth sticking open. It looks, well, kinda like he's sticking out his tongue like the other one. Remember they say if you keep doing that your face will stay that way? Ohmygod, maybe Burton really is a genius. Maybe the whole thing is one big cosmic joke on Leo (or Fox). Etc.                     - - - Jeff

Since Rory isn't here to tell us these things, I thought I'd mention that
May 21 is the 35th Anniversary of the first day of filming the original
POTA. They filmed that day in Paige, Arizona, filming the actors in the
desert; Dodge passed out from the heat. 33 years later, Burton's POTA also
filmed in Paige, Arizona their first day. Etc. - - - Jeff

POTA was on the front pages of both "The Hollywood Reporter" and "Variety"
on Monday as they posted the top 3-day non-holiday weekends. Even with
"Attack of the Clones" POTA is still #4 (behind "Spidey", "Potter" and
"Clones") of the all-time openers. It's still staring Fox in the face that
folks will go to an "Ape" movie if only they'd do a good one.

They filmed that day in Paige, Arizona, filming the actors in the
desert; Dodge, played by Jeff Burton, passed out from the heat. 33 years
later, Burton's POTA also filmed in Paige, Arizona their first day. On
the way to the set, Tim Burton was passed by a Dodge. Coincidence? I
        think not.

        > Yes, very true... (Here I go again using the books as "canon".) But in the novelization of Battle, it tells of thoughts running thru Mc Donald's head. It tells of him thinking how literally "explosive" the Apes armory is, "explosive" because it's lit by oil lamps (and as such, it could easily be detonated should a fire start in there...)
        > It goes on to say how the apes won't even allow electricity in their homes, because it's "too much of a 'human thing' " and that it's associated with the cattle prods, etc.. used to "condition" the apes in their former lives. One can see where they'd shun those things though, if the tech is seen as "guilty by association". (Associated with the "evil" culture of Man, his cruelty towards the Apes (and nature in general), and ultimately, his use of technology in the destruction of himself.)
        >
        > So, you are absolutely right when you criticize my implying that the Ape culture "aped" our high-tech civilization. Obviously, they did NOT "ape" our society as it was when it was at its high-tech pinnacle: they purposely set up an "edenic" society which dwelt in an agricultural setting, eschewing all high-tech (save those remnants which were watched over by Mandemus). The Apes created their own culture, purposely low-tech, and those useful humans who knew things that Caesar wanted his simian people to know were put to use: Teacher to teach the spoken and written language of English; Doctor to practice medicine; etc. (their very names being "forgotten" in lieu of their useful trade).
        >
        > This also is true. Any human seen to have a "useful" trade was kept alive. (Of course this "fact" of humans knowledge being used to help the apes early on in their history is conveniently "buried".)
        >
        > This further exemplifies what I was trying to state earlier, when I said that the Apes did NOT slavishly copy every single detail of the preceeding human high-tech culture. I got the impression that James believes that (for example) the "north-equals-up" Map convention MUST have been a carry-over from our present day tendency to orient maps (to justify his interpretation of the Map).
        >
        > Here, I cannot agree... I mean if they're "adopting" human ways of basic technology, and using human language, I see no reason why you would think they'd use them, but suddenly decide that using humans directional "orientations" doesn't suit their society. I feel James is correct in his feelings that they adopted our directions (N=up, S=down, etc...) I feel he's not trying to "justify" anything, and what he says is just good sense. Why you think they'd adopt our ways of low tech living, but think our maps are a "no no" is not making sense here. I'm not attacking you when I say this to you, but could it be you're the one trying to justify your feelings on the map by saying that they dropped our orientations and redirected them to different places on the map, and by doing so, you're "justifying" your map interpretations?

*** Another of our map conventions is the use of Latitude and
Longitude grid lines, and "N" directional arrows [-->N], and
placenames [i.e. "Ape City" or "The Forbidden Zone" or "Dead Lake"]...
yet none of these are used on Cornelius' map. Why not? In MARVEL's
adaptation, there IS the use of the placename for the Forbidden Zone,
but it ain't in the movie. Essentially, the only information we have
ON THE MAP are the coastlines of the Sea, Dead Lake, and the unnamed
River connecting Dead Lake to the Sea (and skirting the Ape City
area), the colors differentiating the BLUE water areas (the
aforementioned Sea, Lake, & River), the YELLOW/TAN desert areas, the
BROWN mountainous areas, and the GREEN jungle/inhabited areas, and the
dashed line demarcating the border of the Forbidden Zone. AND THAT'S
IT. No grid for Latitude/Longitude... no directional arrow indicating
"North"... no Placenames ["Ape City" etc.]. If Cornelius felt free to
draw up a map WITHOUT such common (to us) conventional details, then
why should we expect him to use the "North-is-up" convention?
Incidentally, Urko's wall-map also disregards the use of a grid, of a
"North" arrow, and of placenames; various symbols are used for
villages, etc., but that's about it. Why are these monkeys so sparing
of detail on their maps? The Lawgiver knows... but this very lack of
detail leaves it open to INTERPRETATION, which opens it up to
DISAGREEMENT (between me and James and whoever else cares to debate
it). I STILL say that Cornelius' line in BENEATH ("...towards the
North...") requires a re-thinking of what seems "obvious" regarding
        the PLANET-only info (i.e. the "North-is-up" interpretation--
admittedly, the simplest explanation taking into account ONLY the info
        from PLANET).

        >
        > What might the reason be for the adoption of the scroll as the primary method of publishing text in the Ape society? Why not just stick with the book format we currently use? Is it easier, perhaps, for a purposely low-tech society to roll parchment (or whatever) around a spool as a scroll, rather than make use of binding materials for books i.e. glues, staples, etc.)? Since the late 20th/early 21st Century society we live in does not customarily use scrolls, why would the Simian society of BATTLE (and following) choose to adopt such an "outmoded" method? Perhaps, to be purposely different? If so, then why not ditch the English language in favor of an "invented" language (a simian "Esperanto" of sorts), just to cut off all ties to the decadent human civilization which enslaved Apes in the first place? Perhaps Caesar kept English alive because he relied on humans (maybe "too much" to the liking of his murmuring detractors), who would hardly be useful if they had to learn a whole new languageOr, perhaps the Apes resorted to scrolls in order to be "retro"--to harken back to an "earlier" time, before the Industrial Revolution which led to the Bomb.
        >
        > I do not believe whole heartedly that the scroll is their primary method of publishing text. While I'm not dead set in this thought either, I do (sometimes) think they use scrolls more as a way of transporting messages and for use in the short term. But as for storing a collection of (once) scrolled information, the text is collected and printed and made into book form. I already pointed out that they do keep Ape history in book form (the book held by the council orangutan being an example.) Since it is shown that they have their historical accounts bound into book form, I see it as plausible that they'd get the information kept in those books from once scrolled information.
        >

*** Admittedly, the TV "book" used by the council orangutan IS an
actual "book"/codex. Perhaps, being a history book, it is easier to
use a codex, since the binding-in of extra chapters (after the fact)
        would/might be easier than to "cut-and-splice" into a pre-existing
scroll an extra length of parchment (scrolls, after all, must be able
to fit into their "scroll holders"; check out, in PLANET, the
cylindrical holders in which the scroll-wrapped spool is housed; if
you wanted to "add to" a pre-existing scroll, the later version might
be too thick to fit into the holder--but a codex format would be
        easier in this regard.
By the way, I looked at PLANET and BENEATH again a couple weeks ago,
and noticed that NEVER is there any use of a "book" (as we would call
it); the Minister in BENEATH is holding a scroll--not a book. Also,
Zaius (in his post-Hearing study) has a rack-full of scrolls, and a
scroll-holding device on his desk, the parchment rolled around the
spool. Unless you count Zira's notepad as a "book", there are
absolutely no books at all in the first 2 movies--only scrolls (at
least, none that I could detect).

        > So, then, I was not trying to imply that ALL details of the Ape culture actually WERE "aped" from our human high-tech civilization; only that our high-tech culture was the only one around which the Apes COULD possibly "ape"--though, instead, they chose to pick and choose which aspects of our world they wanted kept around, and purposely jettisoned those aspects which they deemed harmful to their posterity.
        >
        > Here I agree with you. I do think they "pick and choose" which aspects they found to their liking (or use) at the time they need/want it. I think the "pick and chose" aspect is most closely hinted at in the television series. An example I can think of right off-hand is in "The Surgeon" episode, when Urko says to Zaius about the (human) books being "dangerous" to which Zaius comments something along the lines of "One day, these books will serve us..." In my opinion, this "hints" at the possibility of the books being gone over, (at the convenience of the Ministry of Knowledge) and any information deemed "safe" and/or "useful" being taken out of them and used for the "advancement" of Ape kind. (Of course, as one can see, they certainly didn't see too much of the information contained in the books to be of use to Ape kind. The 900 years between the tv series and the first movie shows they were quite stagnant in any "real" scientific advances...)

*** However, between 3085 and 3955, the Apes DO figure out how to do
blood transfusions (Zira: "Look! She [Nova] remembers!" CORNELIUS:
"Remembers what?" Zira: "The blood transfusion!"), probably due to the
events of "The Surgeon" episode. And, they figure out how to do
photography: in "The Legacy" Zaius asks Urko "I wonder how they do
this?" (referring to Virdon's picture of him and his wife & kid), yet
in PLANET, after the Hunt, Taylor sees the Gorillas posing for a
picture ("Smile!" >flash< then laughter, as Taylor zonks out; also,
there is a wedding photo of Cornelius and Zira visible in BENEATH,
after they get back home from Ursus' speech). Also, unless I'm
mistaken, there are no machine guns used in the TV series, yet in
BENEATH, during the Invasion of the Forbidden Zone, the Gorilla army
uses machine guns against the Mutants (Mendez XXVI being killed by a
burst from one... Brent, too). So, evidently SOME advances are made...
but only a smattering of them. And over nearly nine centuries, you'd
expect more... if it weren't for the technophobia of the Zaius types
in charge of these respective cultures.

If you can go with the more ape-like movements (which some hated) and think that's the most interesting aspect, and it's played well here. Carter's choices are interesting and it gives us our best clue to Thade's character ("You care so much for these humans and nothing for me"). This is the only scene in the movie that I can't find anything to complain about. HATE: The scene where Leo is rallying the humans ("Men have had to fight for what they believe in" or something like that). Talk about cliche, and badly done cliche. Wahlberg just does not work as the straight hero. If the character had been written like an anti-hero, like heston, he might have pulled it off. Generally, I like the first half of the film and hate the second half. If they could've of built on the first half they might of had something.

James Gregory as Ursus was great but not enough to put Beneath into my top three. Escape had a few moments but comes in a distant fifth. Again because I see it bashed alot, I do like to make my case for the incredible jobs that both Tim Roth and Charleton Heston did in Burton's re imagining. *** My favorite bit from Burton's POTA would probably be the orangutan
makeups (not as much Giammatti's "Limbo" makeup, but the other one,
the one with whom Lisa Marie's character "bumps uglies"). I absolutely
HATED the female chimp makeups; if the point was to make more
convincing ape makeups--which made the orangutans especially
impressive--then why didn't the female chimps look more like real
        chimps?
I got tired of Roth's one-note portrayal of Thade: sneering, hissing,
hateful, etc. Never once do we see him chuckle, or laugh out loud, or
look surprised/bewildered. I don't blame Roth so much as I blame the
script which had him being constantly sneering.
Not that I necessarily LIKED it, but the Limbo character--used as a
sort of comic relief--reminded me of Peter Ustinov in SPARTACUS: both
had similar backgrounds (slave-trading and gladiator-selling), and
both had somewhat amusing personalities. I think that that's what
Broyles had in mind when he wrote the Limbo character. Limbo's one-
liners didn't bother me so much, when I recalled that Julius (in the
1968 film) had a few humorous comments ("You know what they say:
        'Human see, human do'...").
Danny Elfman's score (which some here like) was at best utilitarian--
it did the job of providing orchestral background sound, like a
special effect. Yet it is nowhere near as brilliant a score as is the
Goldsmith score for Schaffner's film. Elfman's score seems to "fit"
Burton's movie, in that it is just one more "effect" Fox threw onto
film and gave the name "Planet of the Apes" to, hoping to cash in on
our love of the 1968 masterpiece.
I absolutely HATED the ending. Supposedly, Thade escapes from the trap
Leo gets him into, in the derelict "Calima" ship... and manages to
retrieve Leo's spacepod... HOW? I thought that these monkeys were
deathly afraid of water! Even if Thade DID suspect that there was
something in the water near where he murdered those gorillas, how
could he overcome his fear of the water in order to salvage the pod?
And how could this miracle pod survive--and remain functional--after
being submerged in the water for who knows how long? Wouldn't the
water rust the bejeezus out of it? I can ALMOST buy into the idea that
the "Calima" ship out in the desert would be intact after centures--
after all, it's buried in sand, which would preserve it rather well.
But the corrosive effects of the water on Leo's pod would render it
defunct--and without it, Thade has no chance in hell of somehow flying
it (HOW?!) back through some goofy wormhole and SAFELY landing it back
on Earth in the Past... and SOMEHOW--after being confronted with a
"Planet of the Humans"--leading some kind of revolution in which the
few apes left alive could overthrow Humanity. The ending was sheer,
utter bullshit! To call it "thought-provoking" is a laugh: the only
thoughts it provoked in me were of contempt at the screenwriters'
        implausibility and ineptitude.
Par for par, Dino De Laurentiis' version of KING KONG was a much
better remake/retelling/"re-imagining" of the original than was the
"new" POTA film. And that isn't saying much!

One thing I was particularly disappointed with was the failure to
capitalize on the name "Leo Davidson". Before I saw the movie, I
thought that the name was intended to be symbolic: "Leo" suggests
"Lion" (as in "the Lion of the Tribe of Judah"), and "Davidson"
suggests "Son of David"--both names being Christological references.
If Leo Davidson's introduction to the Ape planet had been modeled
somewhat on the Christ story, then we might have expected to see him
as a human savior who helps out the downtrodden humans who--like the
Jews under the Romans--suffer under the Apes. Or acts in such a manner
as to reconcile the Human-and-Ape rift, just as Christ is supposed to
have reconciled the Jew-and-Gentile rift for his New Covenant. Yet all
of this is wasted in Burton's film. Wahlberg's character might as well
have been named "Joe Henderson" or "Frank Zimmerman". Ultimately, his
supposedly symbolic name ends up carrying no real meaning at all in
the movie: it gave me a false expectation, and didn't follow through
with it... another missed opportunity. Sigh...

The reason I haven't posted in a couple of weeks (before today) is
that I just got back from a trip (my first) to New York City (the real
one... not the one from Farrow's book!).
I drove from West Fargo to Minneapolis (stayed overnight at a friend's
place), then drove to Niagara Falls (stayed overnight at a Day's Inn),
then drove through Toronto and Montreal to a little town called Sutton
for another friend's wedding. Then I drove down to Lakewood, New
Jersey and stayed at a friend's place for about 3 days, making two
        trips up to NYC.
Took the ferry from NJ past the Statue of Liberty ("Damn you all to
hell!") and disembarked at 34th St. on the East River side of
Manhattan. Walked up to the UN building, then went to see the Grand
Central Station: didn't meet any Mutants there, though... which is
        probably a good thing!
Walked over to the New York Public Library--it wasn't open yet, but I
got to see the exterior, just like Brent and Nova when they exited the
        cylindrical airshaft in BENEATH.
Then I went up to see Saint Patrick's Cathedral. I didn't see the
Alpha Omega bomb there, but I did get a good idea of how Mendez's
group would have had to alter it in order for it to resemble the ruins
we see in BENEATH (for example, the organ pipes seen behind the
Doomsday Bomb are not in the altar area--they're at the "back" of the
church, at the "foot" of the Cross-shaped interior; evidently, when
the Mendez group installs the Bomb at the Altar, they also remove the
pipes from the back entrance area and re-install them behind the altar
itself). Didn't see any "drinking fountain" outside the main entrance
area (where Brent tries to drown Nova); evidently, it is a detail that
is "added to" the scene after the Nuke War, since it would be in the
middle of Fifth Avenue if it existed now!
I only had a limited amount of time to spend in NYC, and I had hoped
to see the NY Stock Exchange building (which, for some reason, is
included on Brent's itinerary yet is miles away from the other sites
he encounters clustered near Rockefeller Center), but never made it
down that far... alas. Wanted to see Ground Zero and pay my respects,
but I was travelling with 2 others, and time was limited. On my next
trip, for sure, I'll go see the sites on the southern tip of
        Manhattan.
Because it would have eaten up too much of our limited time, I also
couldn't go over to see the Queensboro Plaza subway station over in
Queens. Damn! Maybe somebody reading this, who either lives in the NYC
area or can get there easily, can go to Queensboro Plaza and take a
bunch of photos of it (exterior, interior, etc.) and post them on this
site... maybe? It would be interesting to compare the REAL subway
station with the remnants of it seen in BENEATH. Please, somebody,
        take me up on this!

Aside from my POTA-related NYC site tour, I managed to get into a
taping of the LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN show (Robin Williams was
the guest). My brother (who travelled with me) works at our local NBC
affiliate, so he was able to get advance tickets. Conan O'Brien puts
on a kick-ass show. Hilarious as hell, and with the best band on TV:
        the magnificent Max Weinberg 7.
My brother--who also has the hots for Kelly Ripa--got us tickets to
see the Regis show; not as much fun as Conan O'Brien... but still a
        lot of fun.
We paid our respects at the Dakotah, and at Strawberry Fields, across
the avenue in Central Park. "Imagine"... I often imagine there's no
        religion--it's easy if you try...

The only bad note was that my car--which racked up over 3000 miles
there and back--blew a seal or gasket or thingamajig just 23 miles
from home on the way back! Blew the smeggin' engine! I had to get it
towed those last few miles... and just yesterday went and bought a new
used car. Thank Zeus for the "magic plastic" that is Master Card, or I
would neither have been able to make the trip nor get another set of
        wheels afterwards!

All in all, a fun trip. Maybe someday soon I'll go to the San
Francisco/Oakland/Los Angeles area and see some of the sites
associated with "The Legacy", "The Trap", and ESCAPE. And Century
City, to get a glimpse of Breck's unnamed city, too. It would be nice
to see the BART station just off Sutton Street (from "The Trap"), just
to see how much/little it resembles the set from the episode. Are
there any POTA fans in California (or who have visited there) who
might have any vacation photos of those POTA sites? If so, please post
them on this website; I'd do so myself if I had the techno-ability. I
surf from a college computer cluster and don't have a scanner to scan
photos, let alone the know-how to post them to this site. Maybe
someday I'll upgrade my home computer (a glorified word processor) and
teach myself how to do all that stuff.
It's nice to be back home, though. It took some doing, but I managed
to speed through the hundreds of posts I'd missed in the last 2 weeks.

I thought that these monkeys were

something in the water near where he murdered those gorillas, how
could he overcome his fear of the water in order to salvage the pod?
And how could this miracle pod survive--and remain functional--after
being submerged in the water for who knows how long? Wouldn't the
water rust the bejeezus out of it?

You probably think I don't have a real answer to this problem, but I do. But
how can I sell it to Fox if I tell you for nothing. Anyway you probably will
come up with your own syllogism for it.

I actually have a lot of time for Patrick and his mission to 'unflub' the
70s Apes - I find it quite entertaining and stimulating (I concede that
he's prone to over-egging the pudding, but hey, I don't have to eat it
all). Which is why I was surprised, and a little disappointed, to see him
giving up so easily on the ending of Burton's movie. I mean, if he can
dream up a scenario to explain the beginning of Escape From The Planet Of
The Apes (which isn't that different from the Thade scenario when you think
about it), then surely anything is possible.

One of my favourite scenes in Burton's film is near the end, when Thade,
having realised he's lost the battle, is cowering in his 'cell'. The once
fearsome general is reduced to a scared little chimpanzee in a cage. That,
for me, is this film's Statue of Liberty moment, in that it puts the
previous 90-odd minutes of hissing and sneering into perspective.

Well done Helen!  Finally someone, besides me has sussed it out!  Spot on!  Sure that heartless bastard wouldn't waste another pod on a chimp (canary) but a pilot (even a lame one like Leo) is a valuable commodity, and worth at least one more pod.  And the first thing that guy is going to do when he lands, assuming he's a better pilot than Leo is, is to check out the ruins of the Oberon, where Thade has had nothing to do but teach himself the computer.  No doubt there was a flight training program on it.  If there wasn't Thade would no doubt beat the info out of that hapless pilot and then kill him.  No doubt he could kill one unlucky pilot.  But without the help of the army he's not going to be in a position of power on that planet any more, and for that, he's going to want revenge.  He'll follow the trajectory of Leo's pod and, due to the idiosyncrasies of the EM storm, end up on Earth before Leo returns.  Chew over that Pat!  Want to know how he took over the world?  Get Fox to pony up some dough for me to do the script and I'll tell yous guys.

          T

C'MON PATRICK.  THERE WERE FOUR PODS.  IF WE REMEMBER THAT PERICLES
(SP?)TOOK ALPHA POD AND THAT LEO TOOK DELTA POD -- ALTHOUGH WE SEE
HIM ENTER THE ALPHA POD BAY -- THEN WE HAVE TO ASSUME THERE WERE TWO
OTHER PODS ANYWAY (BETA & GAMMA?).  IN ALL LIKELYHOOD THERE WERE
STILL TWO PODS IN THEIR BAYS.  NO SWIMMING INVOLVED

Now that's a good sign! Start with the 4 characters that made it into
the Kubricks but not the 6"ers: Mutant Soldier, Mendez 26, Julius, and
Brent. Beyond that I would like to see more BATTLE, CONQUEST, ESCAPE
and TV characters. e.g. Virgil, Kolp, BATTLE Lawgiver, MacDonald,
Orangutang Slave, Caesar in Circus costume, Gov. Brent, Armando etc. Also
          Landon and Dodge from PLANET.

          I like 'em all.

Using the list here (and I know it has missed 2) there are 9 chimps
(3 of these astros), 7 gorillas, 2 orangs and 2 humans.

So my first priority would be to balance things up with orangs,
          humans and mutants.

I want more orangutans - the 3 wise monkeys from Planet, a Conquest
version, a Virgil and Mandemus from Battle AND a TV Zaius.

Mutants are obvious - a female, the black guard and the two most
senior from Beneath. Kolp and Albina (SP? - the female) from
Battle. They (the Baneath ones I mean) should have removable faces
or ones that flip at least.

Humans - Dodge, Landon, Stewart (3 pack) and Brent. A pack of
natives from Planet. Hasslein (he is an important human), the 2 kind
humans from Escape (Stevie and Lewis? - It has been a while),
MacDonald (both), Governor from Conquest, Armando, and a few Battle
          humans in a 3 pack (teacher, female + 1).

Forgot to mention some "Battle" mutants.

          Also, accessories/playsets.

Must have a gorilla (Ursus most likely) on horse. Also a hunt
gorilla on horse - just gotta have one.

Gotta have a spaceship - in consultation with that guy who runs the
Icarus website so it does not turn out lame. Maybe the ship is the
best way to sell the Human crew as a pack.

They could then sell a conversion kit with 3 sitting astro apes (from
the deleted beginning - hey, how come they didn't go into suspended
          animation?).

An ape city playset with the bridge and steps would be incredible,
but probably too large and expensive.

A council scene where Taylor is on trial is a must and another good
way to market a 3 pack of the orangs.

          Any other ideas for playsets?

Good call, Helen. I didn't even consider there might be other pods still
in the ship(though it's unlikely they'd be in working condition). But Burton
leads us to believe it's Leo's pod that Thade uses. And it's true, that
scenario is no different than "Escape", except that they'd painted
themselves into a corner, whereas Burton started fresh and could've done
anything. In an odd way I think it's another of Burton's "homages" to the
originals. Believability can go fly a kite, just as long as Burton can
"comment" on his subject. The same with that awful makeup on the chimp
photographer. You gonna tell me that's the best they could do? And then show
it in an extreme closeup? Burton wanted it that way, maybe as a "tribute" to
bad POTA makeups or something. You have to start thinking on a different
level, like Burton does. We're through the looking glass here, people. White
is black and black is white. Maybe Zanuck is exactly who he said he was, a
          patsy. Etc. - - - Jeff

Those are good ideas, my Lord. But I think the only hope for a sequel is a lower budget, which means no Leo, no Thade and no Burton. But can they get away with a brand new story? People hated that ending but it's become infamous and folks might feel ripped off if it isn't explained. Etc.                            - - Jeff

The jailwagon figured prominently in Planet and Beneath and tops my list.

A cave exterior playset would be a good place to display Cornelius,
Zira, Lucius, Zaius, Taylor, Nova, and some gorillas.

The "Hello Dolly" interrogation set works for the Mutant leaders, Mutant
          guards, Brent, and Nova.

One thing's certain; at $14 apiece, these figures are NOT staying on the
          cards.

I feel ripped off anyway. I liked the original movies and they didn't
have Leo, Thade, or Burton either.

One thing I forgot to mention is how the pattern went with which
Medicoms came from which movie/TV series.

          Exclusively Planet: 3
          Exclusively Beneath: 2
Planet AND Beneath: 5 (eg Zira, Zaius, Taylor, Nova, Corn - debatable)
          Exclusively Escape: 3
          Exclusively Conquest: 3
          Exclusively Battle: 3
          Exclusively TV Series: 2

Looks like a FAIRLY even distribution with an emphasis on the first 2.

Also, another good playset: Baby Milo/Caesar in cage from Escape.

Another good figure: Caesar Statue (ie replacement Lawgiver) from
Battle (with genuine blood tears - joke).

Yes - the Cathedral with Bomb is another must have and the ape
          management is a good idea.

How about a treehouse from Battle?

Forgot to mention a figure of young Cornelius - another must.

Read that AMC has listed "Apes on AMC" as a special for the next
season that begins in the fall. Maybe its another marathon weekend
for the 35th Anniversary or something else. If anyone knows any

Where did you read this, sir? Maybe they're premiering a new special for
the 5-Star DVD? Can't be "Behind"; they've run that into the ground.

I thought we already went through this. I don't have them for reference
since I loaned my "Ape" stuff to the local library for display. And the
          memory fades, but here goes:

Cornelius (I have the rare "dark" Cornelius, he he he): Good
Soldier Ape: A: Good B: Great
          Lucius: Good
          Ursus: Great
          Zira: Good
          Zauis: Great
          Urko: Lame
          TV Soldier: Lame
          Caesar, Battle: Good
          Caesar, Conquest: Great
          Land's Ape, chimp: Good
          Land's Ape, gorilla: Great
Astronauts: they're all good, but Milo is Great because that's the only
          representation of his character
          Aldo: Good
Nova : Great (wait, I have to wipe my brow)
Taylor: Astro, good; Loin cloth: Great, because it's the only
          representation of the classic outfit
          Greatest Ape: I'll take 10

New ones: Is that a possibility? I won't even pretend that they'd bother to
do playsets, but Julius, a mutant, a Natalie Trundy (take your pick),
Armando (for sentimental reasons), and Caesar in his "Conquest" leather
outfit (the opening scenes). I also think it'd be fun to have a few figures
from the cartoon, and Burke & Virdon. Etc.

          .html
There's a good interview with Bill Broyles in a issue last year of
"Creative Screenwriting" (July/Aug 2001). He says Leo is based on Alexander
the Great ( I get the feeling the name Leo is because Leonardo DiCaprio was
the hot young star at the time). He says Fox gave him a blank page to write
whatever he wanted to. Did a lot of research, especially Roman history ("I
was looking at ancient battles in which whole cultures were at stake. I
wanted to set up a conflict in which the spark of consciousness would be
subject to total extinction. Roman history also gave me these wonderful
examples of the extremes of human behavior").
He also says, " The thing about themes is that if you're able to label
them, then they're not working. My idea is that thematic things should be
subtle and a little ambiguous, so they make you think. As opposed to being
things you could write on a sign and carry around. A lot of the original
part, too, was about finding your own destiny and who you were supposed to
be in the world, and how to find within yourself the ability to do things
you may have never thought were possible. All that's in there".
Broyles: "Ultimately, it's thematically similar to my other movies, "Apollo
13" and "Cast Away", in that it's about a man with a technical background-
in this case a pilot- who finds himself shipwrecked far from home and has to
figure out how to get back".
On the final script: " When I finally got the version the writing team did,
I was very pleased with what they had done, because they had taken it in the
direction Tim had wanted to go. But I felt they had been very respectful of
the original story and script that I did...It isn't exactly the same as I
did, but the characters are all there, the humor is there, the sense of
physical and emotional and moral testing is there. The attraction of
consciousness across species is there. The journey of the hero is all there.
The wonderful evil character, Thade, is there in spades. Limbo, the slave
dealer, was a lot of fun to do because he's the comic relief (I named him
Limbo because he was between (the 2 ape ideologies). He's an ape but he's a
slave dealer, so he's an outcast)."
"I read (Boulle's) novel. The novel is really fun. It's interesting but
it's pretty much exhausted by the first movie. There's some nice little
space stuff that inspired me at first. I ended up cutting all that. But I
liked the image of these big sailing ships in space".
The original: "What was interesting about it was it's audacity. That's what
always struck me, just the sheer audacity, and the ability to cloak a lot of
issues of how we relate to each other as humans in a different set of
          garments".
Basically, Broyles created the characters and situations. He's the Pierre
Boulle of the new flick. Though Burton has been given credit for the Krull
character and the ending. Etc. - - Jeff

most people don't seem to like it but when pressed the answers vary wildly
about what they did like. Some hate the Heston scene, others find it the
only redeeming quality, etc. Here's my topic: name one thing you liked about
the new movie and one thing you hated most. This could be good if people
          participate.
          > > I'll go first: Let's stick to scenes. People say, "Oh, I like the
music" or the makeup or Bonham Carter, but that's not specific enough; so
it's scenes. LOVE: My favorite scene is where Thade visits Ari and she
rebuffs him. If you can go with the more ape-like movements (which some
hated) and think that's the most interesting aspect, and it's played well
here. Carter's choices are interesting and it gives us our best clue to
Thade's character ("You care so much for these humans and nothing for me").
This is the only scene in the movie that I can't find anything to complain
about. HATE: The scene where Leo is rallying the humans ("Men have had to
fight for what they believe in" or something like that). Talk about cliche,
and badly done cliche. Wahlberg just does not work as the straight hero. If
the character had been written like an anti-hero, like heston, he might have
pulled it off. Generally, I like the first half of the film and hate the
second half. If they could've of built on the first half they might of had
          something.

to be the original Planet of the Apes for a variety of reasons, probably
most notably the incredible over the top performance of Charleston Heston
"you cut out his brain you bloody baboon". Next would probably be Conquest,
followed by Battle for the Planet of the Apes because I liked Claude Akins
portrayal of General Aldo. James Gregory as Ursus was great but not enough
to put Beneath into my top three. Escape had a few moments but comes in a
distant fifth. Again because I see it bashed alot, I do like to make my case
for the incredible jobs that both Tim Roth and Charleton Heston did in
Burton's re imagining. As they say on the Iron Chef...thats just my opinion.

I think the "wreckings" were Burton's idea, not Broyles'. As in "Batman", where the Joker causes him to crash with one shot. And that's Batman! Burton took a lot of heat for that, too. He can't help himself. He thinks crashes are funny. Etc.           - - Jeff

Actually BATTLE only has two medicoms, Aldo and Caesar. And Caesar is
          a variant. The distribution is:

PLANET(10): Cornelius, Zira, Dr. Zaius, ape soldier, savage Taylor, Nova,
Lucius, Lawgiver statue, astronaut Taylor, Cornelius variant.
          BENEATH(2): Urses, ape soldier variant.
ESCAPE(3): Cornelius, Zira, Milo as astronauts
CONQUEST(3): Caesar, gorilla slave, chimp slave variant
          BATTLE(2): Caesar variant, Aldo
          TV(2): Urko, ape soldier

I love all of the original line but my favorites are the 3 apeanauts from
ESCAPE and the slave apes from CONQUEST. The only thing I don't like about
the line is that Taylor is a full 7" which is too tall.

Below if my complete list which I would buy all of at $12 each. My top picks
from this list would be the mutant leader and mutant guard from BENEATH, Kolp
and human soldier from BATTLE, orangutan slave and riot policeman from
CONQUEST, and Dr. Maximus and Julius from PLANET.

Actually BATTLE only has two medicoms, Aldo and Caesar. And Caesar is
          a variant. The distribution is:

AGREED ON BATTLE - WHAT WAS I THINKING?

BUT I THINK THE REST SHOULD GO:

          PLANET (2): Astronaut Taylor, Lucius.

          BENEATH(2): Urses, ape soldier variant.

BOTH PLANET AND BENEATH (8): Cornelius + Variant (you could argue
that this is a Roddy face so it is exclusive to Planet but I think
both is appropriate since Roddy appears in the beginning flashback
bit - however the variant should have been the Beneath actor), Zira,
Dr. Zaius, Ape Soldier, Savage Taylor, Nova, Lawgiver statue.

ESCAPE(3): Cornelius, Zira, Milo Astro Apes

CONQUEST(3): Caesar, gorilla slave, chimp slave variant

          BATTLE(2): Caesar variant, Aldo

          TV(2): Urko, Ape Soldier

SO, TOP HEAVY WITH PREFERENCE SHOWN FOR FIGURES FROM BOTH THE FIRST
          MOVIES WOULD SUM IT UP.

Yes, there was one additional Orangutan in the courtroom: Dr. Honorius.

          Another question.

Was Albina the female mutant in Battle?

Did the female mutant in Battle/Beneath have a name?

Which of the Return characters would you like to see immortalised in
          Medicom format?

What does the rest of the group think about including cartoon
          characters?
