I don't think that it was evil in this case. He was killing a few men
to preserve his society - we can't really compare his actions to
Hitler or whoever because (a) we're not talking about murder on the
same scale and (b) to the apes, men are effectively just wild animals.
Killing them is no different to our behaviour in the current day where
we might kill lots of a certain kind of animal because it is
endangering our crops or upsetting the food chain.

It's been a while since I've watched Escape... does Cornelius actually
see the guy bleeding? It could be that Cornelius is under the
impression that he merely knocked the guy over.

Charlton Heston now calls PLANET his best
picture?!!!! I don't believe it. You know now he's gone
senile, or is just so full of shit he don't know shit from shinola
anymore. Probably he's getting more checks from PLANET now than any
percentages from any of his other movies -- the big phoney! You know he
still thinks BEH-HUR is the best.

With the budgets as tight as they were on
the sequels, there's no way they bothered to build a new ship.

Maybe the 'Escape' and TV series ship was plywood and the
'Planet' one was metal. It's my belief ( for whatever THAT's worth) that
there were two ships. The metal one submerged in Lake Powell ( which
feasibly Roddy never saw up close as he didn't have any scenes with it) and
the 'complete' ship w/ side hatch seen in the pilot episode of the series
and in Escape. If you compare the two ( this is your cue Mr DVD frame
grabber), I don't think the escape one is as big and wouldn't have the room
for the nose escape hatch. But that's just me, what do I know? Hey, who's
that hiding on that grassy knoll?
No, there was only one full-size prop ship. It
was also borrowed from Fox by Warner Brothers for the movie "The Illustrated
Man" with the now late Rod Stieger. The reason the ship looks smaller in
ESCAPE and the first episode of the TV Show is that it got its ass cut
off. It's shorter.

Okay then compare Zaius to a medieval Catholic Inquisitor who tortures and
kills on a much smaller scale to protect his theology. They may have thought
they were doing the right thing but they were still doing evil. Lots of evil
acts are done in the name of God. If Zaius was not evil than neither were the
Catholic Inquisitors or Islamic terrorists who were only trying to preserve
their societies also. POTA was mirroring the real world, and in the real
world evil people usually don't know they are evil. I bet even Hitler stopped
to pet his dog once in ahile.

That doesn't work. Zaius had decided on a "living death" for Taylor and Landon
not because they were wild animals, but because Zaius knew that they were NOT
wild animals. Zaius KNEW that Landon was intelligent and could talk, at least
I believe so. And Zaius knew that Taylor was intelligent too, but was still
planning a "living death" and torture for Taylor just like Landon.

But the difference here is that the issues that Zaius has with man
(because after all the whole problem is not with Taylor as an
individual but with Taylor as a representative of the destructive
human race that once ruled the planet) are at least partially
supported by evidence - the human-hating of the Sacred Scrolls carry
much more weight when taken in conjunction with the ruins of 20th
century Earth.

But they were of a supposedly "lower" species and based on the
evidence available to Zaius were most definitely a very dangerous form
of it, hence scientific experimentation or killing of them could seem
at least partially justified.

Charlton Heston now calls PLANET his best picture?!!!!
Let's face it. You're not going to get a big turn out to sit through Ben Hur. But if you tell the kids, "We're gonna watch Apes and Nova's going to be here." you won't have many no-shows. Boy, Linda has as many typos as that gal who claims she's writing the new Apes script. You'd think she'd be able to type better since learning how to talk. Perhaps when she tripped over her yoga mat she hit her head as well as stubbing her toe.<.html

Zaius' problem IS with Taylor and Landon as individuals. That's how bigotry
works. Zaius fears Taylor as an INDIVIDUAL because Zaius has prejudged Taylor
and wants to torture and kill Taylor even though Taylor doesn't fit Zaius'
bigoted stereotype of his race.
Surely you must recognize that judging ANYBODY as a "representative of
a destructive race" justifies any form of ethnic cleansing and genocide and
is therefore evil? Again this movie cleverly demonstrates how easy it
is to fall into bigotry and prejudice.
> But they were of a supposedly "lower" species and based on the
That's what most apes thought. But Zaius himself clearly knew that Taylor
and Landon were just as intelligent and he was, and that human accomplishments
had even exceeded the apes.

No I only have the Escape track from the Planet CD. But that was 18 minutes

ESCAPE "track" is 3+ minutes long is my favorite piece of POTA music.

that's it. And that Zauis never killed no one. Well, maybe those earlier two
astronauts, but I'm sure it was an accident like Cornelius had. Zauis just
bragged about it later to be macho. So, the TV Zauis is not evil. Phhew!

I've got all of the Ape soundtracks on CD including a bootleg that features
about 23 minutes of music from Escape and music from The Mephisto Waltz.
But does it have the shopping music.
I think anyone who has that should offer an MP3 file to the group! <.html

According to estimates, "Men in Black 2" was
in the lead Friday despite two new Zanuck productions, "Road to Perdition" and
"Reign of Fire". Perhaps this will buttress his arguments for "Apes 2" ("Damn
it, gotta have a title with a 2 in it; that's the magic!"). Good reviews for
"Perdition", less so for "Reign", though I know there are dragon fans out
there. I guess for Zanuck there's a distinction; good scripts on this
side, summer FX pictures on that side. Anyone seen these?
Etc.

I'm going to try and go see "Reign of Fire" tomorrow, because, damn it!, I like dragons. But Oh that Dick! That reminds me, I forgot to tell you folks something.... Three months ago Joe Russo hung out with Linda Harrison at the New Jersey "Thiller" convention. She told him that the last time she was at the Zanuck's home (which she occasionally visits if there's a need, i.e. money), ol' Dick was sitting in the living room watching TV and wearing gloves. Why gloves? So he wouldn't bit his nails!

Especially the one-sheet. I went hoping to see the sky filled with dragons
doing battle with Apache helicopters. We see the discovery of the dragons,
but not the actual WAR with them. We get that as backstory. After they are
discovered, it jumps ahead 20 years as the remnants of mankind struggle to
stay alive. There is ONE shot of a dragon-filled sky, and some really
exciting ariel action. Obviously, it's cheaper to show the fight against one
dragon, than thousands.
And you can forget about any of them having Draco-like personalities. They
are shown as incredibly vicious. Velociraptors are house pets compared to
these guys...! It seems the dragon race is what killed of the dinosaurs, and
is responsible for all the ancient, mass-extinctions. But in spite of that,
there is (mysteriously) no dragon fossil record.
They feed on ash. And so, incinerate the planet surface until there's
nothing left to burn. Then they lay eggs and all die from starvation. The
single male goes dormant until the earth replenishes itself. He then emerges
and the cycle begins anew. They are described as reproducing like fish. The
eggs are laid, and the giant, lone male flys over and emits a fertilizing
spray. That's right, a MILLION females, and ONE male. Talk about working
overtime.
I like the fire explanation. Glands in the mouth secrete two separate
chemicals that ignite when mixed together. Natural napalm. Nasty stuff, too.
A few holes, but nothing that can't be lived with. But of course, I love
monster movies. Now, I can't wait until Wednesday to see EIGHT LEGGED

And you can forget about any of them having Draco-like personalities. They are shown as incredibly vicious. Velociraptors are house pets compared to these guys...! It seems the dragon race is what killed of the dinosaurs, and is responsible for all the ancient, mass-extinctions. But in spite of that,
there is (mysteriously) no dragon fossil record. They feed on ash. And so, incinerate the planet surface until there's nothing left to burn. Then they lay eggs and all die from starvation. The single male goes dormant until the earth replenishes itself. He then emerges and the cycle begins anew. They are described as reproducing like fish. The eggs are laid, and the giant, lone male flys over and emits a fertilizing spray. That's right, a MILLION females, and ONE male. Talk about working overtime. I like the fire explanation. Glands in the mouth secrete two separate chemicals that ignite when mixed together. Natural napalm. Nasty stuff, too. A few holes, but nothing that can't be lived with. But of course, I love monster movies. Now, I can't wait until Wednesday to see EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS! MWA-HA_HA_HA_HA_HA! Gristle P.

dragons have perfect day/night vision, but can't focus during the narrow
twilight time between day and night. That fuzzy, not-day-not-night moment.
"The Magic Hour" he called it. Naturally, we assumed that would be a key
factor in the beast's defeat. But as the film progressed, it was never
played on or mentioned again. Don'cha hate it when that happens...? Oh,
well. I felt better after REIGN than I did after POTA '01.

*** Well, whadda ya know! The last time I did an Internet search for
"Hasslein" (I can't remember what search engine I used--but it was
probably LYCOS, about three months ago), the first hundred "hits" were
all POTA-related sites. Yeah, I assumed that anything beyond the 100th
"hit" would ALSO be a POTA-site. Having "checked the real world" since
reading your posting (specifically, an "Overture" search engine), I
did indeed find non-POTA "Hasslein" entries. So, then: Serling &
Wilson did NOT invent the name for their concocter of an Einstein-like
"theory of Time in a vehicle..." etc. I stand corrected. Evidently, it
wasn't enough to look through telephone books for any "Hassleins", or
to search a couple months ago on an inadequate search engine, or to
look up the name in a dictionary of German last names (just for your
sake, I'll go to the reference section of the local library and get
the exact title of the book in question and double-check it, just to
make sure I didn't miss it--although the fact that it was in
alphabetical order would make that unlikely). I wonder why a German
name dictionary would omit such a name?
I wonder, too, why it is that such a name--meaning "Hate-Lineage"--
could ever become ANY German person's name. How far back does the name
go? What were the circumstances of it becoming a name? All good
questions, and I don't claim to have the answers. It would be nice to
know, even if those answers are dug up by somebody else on this site
(if, that is, anybody else on this site cares about the origin of the
name "Hasslein", other than me).
I get the impression, Anthony, that you're feeling rather smug, having
pointed out something that I hadn't accessed yet. Power to ya, if it
floats yer boat. I never claimed to be omniscient, or to have accessed
every friggin database the world over in a search for anybody else
(other than POTA's fictional "Otto") with the last name "Hasslein".
Congratulations on finding out something that I hadn't yet become
aware of. Perhaps I should supplicate myself before your almighty

*** I wouldn't call myself an "expert"--just a fairly well-informed
student of it. I've subscribed to "Biblical Archaeology Review" and
its sister publication "Bible Review" for years, enjoying the
scholarly approach they take on all things Biblical. Irate Christian
fundamentalists clutter the BAR and BR letter columns there,
protesting any theory presented by contributors if it dares to suggest
that the Bible is not "inerrant". I also enjoy reading the
"literature" published by the Bible-belt types of churches, just to
see how they try to reconcile the obvious contradictions they refuse
to recognize (such as: Who's the first disciple to get to the Open
Tomb of Jesus? What were Jesus' actual last words before dying on the
Cross? Was it before or after the Sabbath when the "two Marys" bought
the spices with which to anoint Jesus' corpse? etc.).
For the record, the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament does not
say that the "serpent" in Eden was a Devil in disguise named "Satan"
or "Lucifer" or "Beelzebub". The "serpent"--in Hebrew, "NaChaSh": "the
hissing/whispering one"--was adapted (as was the entire "creation"
narrative) from Sumerian and Babylonian sources, and this same
"whispering one" is the god Enki who "whispered" to Utnapishtim to
build an Ark and save himself, because his jerk half-brother god Enlil
wanted to wipe out Humanity. The "biblical redactor" who formulated
the texts of Genesis (etc.) after the "Babylonian captivity" basically
took a POLYTHEISTIC creation story (and Flood story, etc.) and re-told
it as a MONOTHEISTIC story, which necessitated changing other "gods"
into either talking serpents or "angels"/"cherubim"/"seraphim"/etc.
The name "Lucifer" is Latin, meaning "Light-Bringer", and "he" is
called "the Morning Star" and "the Evening Star": it wasn't a "star"
at all, but was actually the planet Venus, which--due to the fact that
it orbits the Sun inside the Earth's orbit--is always "near" to the
Sun, hence visible during sunrise and sunset (depending on if it is
above the horizon, of course). How the "demon-haunted" Christians came
to fear "Lucifer" as some sort of "fallen archangel"... well, it's due
to the infusion of Persian mythological ideas (the spiritual battles
between "Ahura Mazda" and "Ahriman", etc.) into the Jewish religion
prior to the writing of the Intertestamental literature.
"Lucifer" is not so much a "character" in the Bible, as "he" is a
misinterpretation of a representation of the planet Venus; the reason
the Pentagram is considered a symbol of the Devil is because as the
Earth and Venus orbit the Sun, they align themselves 5 times over the
course of 8 years, forming a heavenly Pentagram of occultations. This
mystical synchronization of Earth-and-Venus orbits, forming a magical
Pentagram in Heaven, is mentioned in the works of Henry Lincoln
(principle author of "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail"), notably
"The Holy Place" and "The Templars' Secret Island". In related
mythologies, Venus (i.e. "Lucifer", "Ishtar", "Isis", "Sophia") is the
consort of the primary Sun god; the Bible-writers bastardized this
mythic notion and--in a misogynistic move--demonized the "divine
Female" concepts, turning "Wisdom" goddesses into "Evil Spirits".

For the record, I love ALL the POTA movie music... with the exception
of the CONQUEST soundtrack, which sounds too much like a "TV movie of
the week" effort. I don't HATE it... but I think it's the least of the
5 soundtracks. Goldsmith and Rosenman did much superior work, and it's
funny how the BEST music in CONQUEST is the Goldsmith-scored bit from
PLANET (the "scarecrows" music), used after Caesar proclaims "...we
have seen the birth of the Planet of the Apes!".
I also dig Lalo Schiffrin's opening credits music for the TV show.
Thank you FILMSCORE MONTHLY for releasing it along with the CONQUEST
and BATTLE soundtrack CD!

More than likely the interior was made of wood, in fact it would have to be. I think I can see one of the interior 2X4's inside the ship where the side panel is removed in the shots of Heston getting out the escape hatch in PLANET. But it's obvious the 'skin' was metal. Also, notice in PLANET that in at least one shot you see the full size prop ship rise a little as it's sinking. Some sort of devise was attached at the base on the ship to probably take in water or shift ballast to make the prop do this. In this base was also probably the dry ice and water jets to create the bubbling around the ship.

Omniscience is neither expected, nor required. You've begun several of
your recent arguments with inaccurate information that could easily have

I usually read your posts hoping that you'll point out something about

The Fast and the Furious and Jurassic Park 3 are
just a few of a long list. The Fast and the Furious has to be THE WORST
movie i have ever seen in my existance. I happen to like POTA 2001 a lot,
unlike most of you. I do agree, though, that there could have been so much

originals. The remake not only failed to recapture the magic that
made us POTA fans in the first place but went in the opposite
direction, insulting our intelligence. Last year when the remake
came out, the NY Times website post the reviews of the original
films and a overview written in '74 during the "Go Ape" release of
all five films. One comment that struck me was the despite the up
and downs of the five films, the filmmakers always showed respect
for their audience and took the high road rather than using the apes
as monsters, bearing their fangs and growling. Then I saw the remake
and the first shot of an Ape had it bearing its fangs and growling.

I think a lot less could have been done with it. It would have been a better film. In fact I think I'll start on my project this week of editing down and get something watchable. No more Limbo quips or references. No more Heston cameo. I may even cut down on the monkey's flying time. Then it'll be a better movie.<.html <.html

The new one's just not a thinking man's movie. Or a thinking ape's for that
matter. Zanuck was just hoping to cash in on Gorillator. But Burton was so
soft-core with hint of sex & violence to keep that precious PG rating that it
fail miserably at that as well. This movie suffers from a schismed
personality by trying to be too many things to too many people. If you try

.htmlOK, here's this week's edition of Rich People Gettin' Richer, hosted by
Robin Leach. "Men in Black" dropped almost in half from $52 million last
week to $25 m. this week. Still #1. "Road to..." had the fewest # of
theatres but still came in #2 with $22 m. (the movie cost $80 million, you
wouldn't think so). "Reign of..." disappointed with $16 m. (that probably
means bye-bye dragon pictures). Then there was "Halloween" with $12 million
and "Croc Hunter" with $10 million (Paul Hogan he's not). Theatres were
forced to keep "Episode 2" for 8 weeks and now they've dumped it; it made $1
million. Last week "Spidey" tied "Titanic" for fastest to reach $400
million. It's a madhouse! A madhouse!! Etc. - - -

Okay, I have to agree with the above statement. Even though I wasn't
expecting much, I still had high hopes that they could somehow pull it off.
Even while watch the thing, I would see things that would give me hope only
to have them trounced in the next scene. And the "surprise" ending did have
me leaving the theater feeling gypped, as it would anyone who had actually
bothered to read the book. The best I can say is that I didn't hate it.

For you film buffs, South Park is going to be on in an hour. For those of
you who didn't see this weeks episode, it makes a great statement about
directors who go back and add footage to their old films once they have the
money and technology to do so. I think we all know who we're talking about

As for bad redos, here's what current top
dog director Barry Sonnenfeld ("Men in Black 2") said about his "Wild, Wild
West": "I should have trusted my instincts but I didn't. You never cast 2 funny
guys in the same movie, so I never should have cast Kevin Kline. Will (Smith)
and I knew that Kevin wouldn't play the straight role, so Will had to take that
role, and the audience didn't want that. I also think it was a mistake to get
into the science fiction angle. I could have won the audience on a Western
alone...disappointing".
Of course, the bad script had nothing to do
with it. I heard it was Sonnenfeld who had Tommy Lee Jones play his MIB role
"straight", instead of trying to be "funny", I think a secret to it's success.
By the way, Warners Bros. cancelled Burton's "Superman" to do "Wild, Wild West".
If they'd done 'Superman", maybe the roulette wheel wouldn't have landed Burton
at POTA. But could it be that any director would've been saddled with that
script and that schedule? - - - Jeff

Yeah, Burton's Chihuahua has a stronger personality than he does. I'm sure
that's why actors like to work with him. He's a good buffer between them and
the studio. But he's not the guy to stand up the the studio heads. He

.html Actually, I've been in Colorado for 2 weeks. I've been visiting my cousins,
aunts, uncles. I found out that my uncle is also a big ape fan, so we sat
down to watch the original with his kids. I'm always up for that. He also
had some old Megos down in the basement in a box, along with various ape
posters. A few days after we watched the movie, I went pawn shopping at a
smelly old store for Ape stuff. I found 2 (naked) Megos, Cornelius and Zira,
in the 50 cent toy bin, so I picked those up.
Also, on my trip, I read some of The Fall by mr. Quick. It's pretty
interesting. The slimy bug idea is not bad at all. I'm enjoying the book
very much, although I'm only to page 100. So, has anyone else read it? And
what do you think about it?
Besides the above, I didn't do that much else with apes. I just saw two
movies (Men In Black 2, okay, Reign of Fire, okay) and went innertubing down
Boulder Creek and scratched my back and ass up pretty badly on the rocks. Oh
well, I'll go read some of The Fall now. I'm glad to be back.

Oh yeah, I was thinking that the Apes didn't have much to do in this book
because of the 'Look for more Ape books soon!' quote on the back of the book.
So does anyone know the title of the next book, or when it's coming out?

.html OK since it's quiet again I have another question. If you could make
one change to any of the Apes films what would it be?
For me, I'd have liked to see Beneath as it was originally planned
with Taylor, instead of Brent, as the main character all the way
through. <.html

.htmlWelcome back, Gota. That's a good deal on the neked Cornelius and Zira.
I've seen people try to get $30 and more for incomplete "Ape" Megos. I liked
"The Fall" but too much was made out of the bugs. Reminded me of Stephen
King more than "Apes". The ending was excellent, though, bringing back the
element of surprise, which is what POTA2001 needed more than anything. - - -

.htmlGood question James.
In some ways I would love to see a special treatment given to the
original (ala the new Star Trek: The Motion Picture) - enhanced
effects, better sound, Dodge not breathing in the Museum etc.).
I would like to see a lot of the open statements addressed too (about
the history of apes, the first talking apes etc).
I'll think of more....

I don't know where this would go (most likely in Beneath) but I'd like to see
Zira and Cornelius's wedding. Nifty!

They also had the 1998 12 inch Hasbro collector's (whatever) Doc Zaius doll,
the one I don't have (I have Ursus and Cornelius) but it was 25 bucks.
Fizuck that. I didn't buy it.

In PLANET: The hatch on the ship when you first see it, and the panel in place that's open on the side. I'd put a hole in Heston's neck when you see him lying in the wagon, instead of only a lot of blood as it is. Less over-the-head masks!!! And make sure no one playing an ape shows their neck or the inside of their mouths! Also, Ape City bigger, BIGGER! The President of the Assembly looking at the naked Taylor in the court room and saying, "Bright Eyes, I sensed you were crazy, but now I can see you're nuts!!!"
In BENEATH: Less over-the-head masks!!! Drop Brent and just replace Heston with another actor to play Taylor and develop the character further. Get a better writer than Paul Dehn and a better director than Ted Post, and Jerry Goldsmith for the score. Add $2 million to the budget. Think about a better ending.
In ESCAPE: Makeup on Roddy and Kim that looks exactly as they did in the original. A better gorilla and chimp suits. And, an explanation as to why nobody notices that the chimpanzees from the future don't look at all like modern chimps. What's up with that?
In CONQUEST: Less over-the-head masks!!! Another $2 or 3 million to the budget. Ape shoes for the apes! Jerry Goldsmith for the score! The original ending and a better explanation as to how it all came about than a plague on dogs and cats! What's up with that?
In BATTLE: Oh Jesus!!! Another story and script. Another few million for the budget. Jerry Goldsmith for the score! No Paul Williams!! Hair collars back on the gorillas. . . AND Less over-the-head masks!!!
