Just goes to show you, craft services isn't the only place stars eat can find bad food.  That banquet in Memphis was none too good either.  The Philly Cheese Steak sandwich from room service was better.  Actually I've eaten at some Sizzlers that were pretty good!  It's no Lawry's Prime Rib, but it's not priced like one either.  And when was the last time you saw any of those guys in a leading role?  You're not going to eat at Spaggo's or Wolfgang Puck's everyday on those paychecks.

Well I finally saw Vanilla Sky on DVD this weekend and I really liked

Then I re-watched 12 Monkeys and the elaborate documantary that came
with the DVD.

We gotta get Gilliam to do POTA (call it 12 apes?)

Y'know I thought MIB2 was OK but it was a typical formula sequel.

I also had to wonder if it was supposed to be a "war-time morale
booster" like an old Elvis movie (made me wanna chant "USA, USA").

Just a thought.

The studios won't touch Gilliam with a 10 foot pole. I read in "Starlog"
that Cruise and Spielberg gave up their fees to do "Minority Report"; they
just get a cut of the profits, which won't be what they're used to. - - -

That's debatable Jeff.

12 Monkeys was a hit and that's what they remember him by.

He actually would be very hard to get becaues he hates Hollywood and
is not too keen on directing unless he gets final cut.

But yes he does have quite a reputation.

Eight Legged Freaks rocks...! It's hilarious. A very well done
horror/comedy mix. But of course, the title and poster art tell you that it
isn't trying to be a serious movie. The creature effects are excellent. Some
of the dialog is rather flat, but we weren't expecting Shakespear, so it's
all good. Check it out. It's a lot of fun. The jumping spiders chasing the
dirt bikers alone is worth admission.

Unfortunately, I DID waste my money. NO cool new characters. NO cool
lines. Frank the Pug stole the whole show. Which was cool because he's a
scream. If it weren't for Frank, it would have been a total loss.

Yeah, they would have had to have dubbed his voice. Not because he
wasn't really a child, just because nobody would have understood why a

But he was also Gorilla Kid with camera!

A marvel, a living pardox, a missing link in the evolutionary chain.

I knew there was a marvel in there somewhere.
But I couldn't quite think of the exact quote and I didn't want to cheat.
It was Zira who said mutation.  Anyway, Taylor told him he wasn't a missing link!

Remember that Joe Dante comedy "Matinee"? They sold that the same way, as
a spoof of big bug movies and, again, people stayed away. FX are so good now
people want to believe them, not laugh at them. And "Arachnaphobia" bombed
too. - - Jeff

Let's find out the next time Zanuck goes to a big sporting event and get the whole crowd to yell, "THE COMBINATION OF TERRY GILLIAM AND POTA JUST SPELLS MAGIC TO US!". He probably still won't get the message. - - - Jeff

We gotta get Gilliam to do POTA (call it 12 apes?)

I've been saying that for the last 7 years!

I liked that movie until the end, then it fell apart like a house of cards.
Good performance by Tom Cruise though.

Not supprising.
He's not into message movies.

As some people hate long threads about politics or other off topic
subjects, I'm really beginning to dislike these long threads about
the weekend box office every week. (Especially since I can read
about the weekend box office from any of a 100 sites on the internet
if I choose to and don't need to read a report posted here.)
May I suggest that either this be moved to a group dedicated to
discussing the subject or take it offline. Thanks.

Anybody else here ever seen the 50's Sci-Fi Classic "THEM!" starring this dude you might have heard of named James Whitmore?  It's the great grandfather of all giant bug movies, and a damn cool movie too.  It's coming out on DVD next month.

Yes. An excellent film. Quite dramatic, in fact. The blueprint for all
giant bug movies to come afterward. Top notch effects, too.Though none of
them (that intended to actually be dramatic) ever managed to get it quite
right.
It could have been even MORE awesome if the 3-D craze hadn't been on the
way out. The film was concieved as a big budget, technicolor, 3-D
extravaganza but that and studio budget cuts scaled it back down. More
trivia: What star, famous primarily for westerns, has a cameo in TARANTULA,
and REVENGE OF THE CREATURE? Both 50's Sci-Fi films. That bit of info is
gonna be way over you kiddies' heads. ;)

Just been raking through some more of my old mags - this is from a
Beneath review in a 1970 issue of "Castle of Frankenstein"...

"But it's certainly hardly at all as memorable as the original of '68,
and what bothers me most is that its basic source of inspiration seems
to have sprung from a dollar sign rather than an idea. The production
will undoubtedly make money on the strength of PLANET, but I'm sure
most people will be somewhat let down after seeing this new effort.
"The ending will not be revealed, but you can be sure there won't
be a sequel to BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES!"

That's a pretty ironic review, but it sure was dead on in that the movie was made to make $$ rather than there was a further story that had to be told.  I remember when I was first told there was an ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES on the way, I wondered, "But how?!!"

There's a 1973 or '74 issue of Castle of Frankenstein that looks at the entire series and in it they call BENEATH a mess and BATTLE a truly awful movie.

OK that's enough.

James has a valid point.

As Mr Cougar said, talk off topic as much as we like but add the "OT".

I did that on about the 12th post, but it should have appeared
earlier.

Patrick and Alex voted me in.

Your own son refers to me as Dr Zaius, and after a trip to the
mothership I was promoted to the rank of Lawgiver.

Please address me as sir.

Howdy,

I'm in the process of scanning the British POTA "Apeslayer" comic strips
for a friend who doesn't have them. Once the're scanned, is there anyone
here who would like them as well? I'd be happy to send them to anyone who
wants them... horrid though they may be. :)

Well, one must admit that BENEATH is a rather haphazard film. The bomb is
cool, the mutants are cool, but it all still never seems to gell as firmly
as it should. I've also wondered, during the steam room scene, just how
Ursus manages to squeeze his considerable bulk into that uniform. ;) And as
for BATTLE, well, it is what it is.

Mercifully, for the moment, I HAD forgotten FOOD OF THE GODS. But hey, Rick
Baker's giant rat was pretty cool lookin'...! And speaking of Rick, has
anyone else out there seen OCTOMAN? Baker built the title creature for 500
bucks. And BOY, does it look it. But of course, you have to start SOMEwhere.

Conquest is on More Max at 6AM followed by Battle at 7:30AM.

May I suggest that either this be moved to a group dedicated to

While I can't say I disagree with your stance here, as I have mentioned similar feelings as your's, I have no problem with them discussing such topics if they are simply marked as
OT. That way, I know it's not APES related, and I can avoid reading it if I choose to...

As much as I admire and appreciate the work put into these custom figures, I think Sauseville dedicated to much space to them in his book ( but not as much as the home made T-shirts). They certainly deserve a mention and a few pics but as they weren't officially licensed, they should have appeared in a 'fan produced' section with other custom items and unofficial merchandise. There was another artist who called himself 'Ape-Joe' who made custom 12 inch figures using GI Joe bodies way before the Hasbro line was released. He had a site also, but I don't know if it's still around.

Yeah. And my pet peeve of Sauseville's book is the 2 pages devoted to script covers. But it's still a nice resource for those not too familiar with the old collectibles. Some of the footage Alex is trying to convert to DVD includes Ron Harper and Booth Colman being given their own Ape Joe likenesses from Ape Joe himself. - - - Jeff

.htmlYeah, I remember being feeling sort of let down by Beneath.  Oh it has it's moments, but it's kind of like POTA 2001.  That, "Well at least it's something" feel to it.  Sure, it has talking monkeys.  But it's not what I was hoping for.  I still think they were both better than Battle though.  For those of you who like to defend Battle I have just six words.  "We Need Guns.  Gun Are Power."  Need I say more?

The productionwill undoubtedly make money on the strength of PLANET, but I'm sure most people will be somewhat let down after seeing this new effort.
"The ending will not be revealed, but you can be sure there won't
be a sequel to BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES!"

Now there's a coincidence - EMPIRE OF THE ANTS and FOOD OF THE GODS
mentioned in one day. EMPIRE OF THE ANTS is sitting in a pile of HG
Wells books that I have not yet read and I've never seen the film as
yet (though I'm led to believe it has very little in common with the
book - what a surprise). On the other hand, I just recently finished
reading FOOD OF THE GODS, and had absolutely no idea it had been made
into a film - I'll need to seek it out!

I have a few other issues tucked away somewhere, I don't know if I've
got that one or not. But continuing my trip into the vaults, here are
a few snippets from shortlived UK mag WORLD OF HORROR concerning the
sequels.

Oddly, the issue appears to be from early 1975 but the article is
looking forward to the TV series, which premiered in the UK towards
the end of 1974. Anyway...

"BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES is certainly a lurid melodrama, and a
blatant vulgarisation of the original concept, but there is enough
action to keep everyone awake, and it is entertaining, in comic-book
fashion."

ESCAPE: "Nearly all similarity to the original has vanished, and many
critics found this installment to be much too cute and sentimental to
tolerate. Still, it is well acted, and on the whole a more interesting
and thought-provoking story than the first sequel."

CONQUEST: "A total loss, this one. The ape masks on minor characters
have become less convincing, the supporting cast is dreary, and only
McDowall is able to arouse any interest at all. The script is full of
blatant absurdities, and the final battle is a pretty paltry affair,
no more spectacular than the average Trafalgar Square out-of-hand
demo. Still, riding on the popularity of its precursors, CONQUEST was
a financial success, if nothing else."

BATTLE: "This, if possible, is even more fatuous than the last sequel,
and as even dyed-in-the-wool APE freaks were disappointed, the series
finally came to a rather bad end. BATTLE's greatest virtue is perhaps
the appearance of the venerable John Huston (obviously having a great
lark) in the cameo role of the apes' Lawgiver."

And of the TV series?

"Well, all this was nearly two years ago, and we now look forward with
interest and some trepidation, to the upcoming television series.
Let's hope to find more of the wit and intelligence of the original,
and less of the formula violence and muddled scripts of the later
episodes."

Whether this turned out to be true is up to you - I'd say no to the
first part and yes to the second.

Sauseville collectibles book. http://msotis.home.mindspring.com .

Sotis's customs are cool, I own a few of them myself... Those APE-JOEs didn't look too good to me at all. Granted, yes he might have worked hard on them, but in the end, they looked like blockheaded figures...

I only bought one of Ape-Joe's figures. The Urko one.I thought it was pretty cool at the time as there were no other 12 inch Ape figures around. I think if Sotis applied his work to a 12 inch line, they'd be pretty awesome, but expensive.

When I saw BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES in 1970, there were two trailers before the movie -- MASH and KELLY'S HEROES.  Although I didn't see either of those movies until they came to TV (in '74), I always associate them with BENEATH.

"We ain't got no booze!"    "Always with the negative waves."
"To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some kind of weird
        sandwich"
"Ruff, ruff, ruff!  That's my other dog imitation."

Too many great lines to quote.  I guess James will want us now to start a KELLY's HEROES group.  (By the way, the DVD looks and sound great.)

"Three Kings", starring Mr. Mark Wahlberg, is often likened to "Kelly's
Heroes". Next up for him are remakes of "Charade" and "The Italian Job". He
keeps remaking 'em, we'll keep watching. - - Jeff
