and Jan. 3 1973. The first thing I checked was the "Aldo" reference
from Cornelius that was in the Marvel version. Dehn must have taken out
the Aldo reference sometime after Dec 20 because that page was obviously
altered without being retyped.

It was a huge difference. They killed a lot of Kolp's/Breck's men, starting
from when their escape had been cut off. Compare that with Dehn's lame
change of Caesar using the water hose when they were cut off. If you
are about to be captured and/or killed are you going to get out a
water hose, or would you use the automatic weapon that you already have
in your hands? Another example of where Dehn dumbed down the script.

It is very obvious from the earlier (Marvel) version of the script
that this was the case. The earlier script just doesn't leave any room for
doubt that the BATTLE Aldo was supposed to be the ESCAPE Aldo. Here is the
relevent dialog [Marvel #24 p22] so that people can see that for themselves.
This dialog is yet another example of how the earlier script was much easier
to understand and made better sense before Dehn's changes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
McDonald: ...if the astronaut Taylor does come from our past and enter
the same future ape culture Cornelius and Zira escaped from...then the
world will end in [3955]!
Caesar: And you believe Aldo's gorilla's are building that future
right now?
McDonald: Yes, that's what I believe!
Caesar: All right! If history can be changed, then we'll change it. We must!
Virgil: But how can you CHANGE something when you don't even know WHAT
has to be CHANGED?
Cornelius (from tape): ...there came an ape called ALDO who didn't
BARK! He ARTICULATED!...
Caesar: I think, Virgil, that I DO know what to change! Come on McDonald!
I've seen ENOUGH now...

Yes I do know that. While I do not know what the date was on the script Marvel
was using (I sure would like to), I am certain it was an earlier version of the
script without any of the significant changes Dehn put in. It has the
Corrington's ending and not Dehn's ending. It has Breck and not Kolp. It
includes the mention of Aldo by Cornelius that Dehn took out (again a big
example of how Dehn's changes made it much harder for people to understand what
was actually going on in the story.) And it seems to have around 95% different
dialog from the later script and movie, which is the percentage of dialog that
Dehn claimed to have changed and was what Dehn actually spent most of his time
on.

You've got this backwards. The whole purpose of the "Quest" story was Marvel's
horrible attempt to bridge the CONQUEST script to the BATTLE script. Marvel
used a full page editorial [#27 p23] in order to make it very clear that they
were not changing the BATTLE story in any way. Here is an excerpt.
------------------------------------------------------------------
All of the Apes adaptations done for this magazine were done from the shooting
scripts. For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the term, it refers to
the script as it stands at the time principal photography is begun on a
film...which account for the slight variations in our first four adaptations.
But then we come to BATTLE, in which the difference between our adaptation
and the 20th Century Fox film are something more than "minimal" The first
thing you should know that neither Doug Moench nor anyone at Marvel comics
made those changes. DOUG ADDED NOTHING OF HIS OWN TO THE SCRIPT. What you
have been reading is a nearly verbatim adaptation of the shooting script
provided by Fox. Why the final film was so completely altered, I don't
know...
------------------------------------------------------------------
My only comment is that Marvel didn't realize here they were not given the
final version of the script. Just a guess but maybe whoever gave Marvel their
copy knew that the earlier script was better. The version of the script from
SCRIPT CITY looks like the actual shooting script with Dehn's changes, since it
was dated the same month the film began shooting (Jan 1973) and appears to be
just the same as the movie.

I'm with Michael on this. Things work better if you use "OT" on off topic
posts. As with any internet group there are lots of lurkers (what is the

Someone in a post sometime back said that the version of the script
they had, that Aldo had been crossed out in pencil. It is typical of
most movies to have last minute rewrites and even on-set changes.

I don't know some of the mutants looked pretty dead to me. But even
if they weren't why blame Dehn. It was the studio that wanted more of
kid pic and had them soften and dumb-down a lot of stuff.

All that is obvious is that the Marvel version is different from the
film. Since you nor I were there, we don't know how much they changed

No you don't. You didn't read their version so there is no way you
can comment on it. It would be like going to see the movie 'Pearl
Harbor' and claiming to be a witness to the actual event.

All Marvel said is that they didn't add anything to the story, which
was pretty close to the final Battle story anyway. But it's possible
that they rewrote the dialouge to make it more readable. However,
since you or I weren't not there, neither of us can say what happened.

If that script was so much better why did Jacobs drop the
Corrington's and bring back Dehn as soon as he was well enough?
Why did Thompson complain about the Corrington's script?
Do you really think the Corrington's (writers of the soap opera
Texas) are better writers than Dehn (screenwriter of The Spy who Came
in from the Cold, Goldfinger & Murder on the Orient Express)? <.html

Unless Marvel was lying in its full page editorial on this very subject
than yes I can say with certainty what happened.
Marvel says that
(1) The earlier story was very different - "the final film was so completely
altered".
(2) Marvel was not responsible for the story changes - "neither Doug Moench
nor anyone at Marvel made those changes"
(3) Marvel was not responsible for the dialog changes - "What you have
been reading was a nearly verbatim adaptation of the shooting script provided
by Fox." Marvel also specifically mentions that they were not responsible
for the dialog changes later on.

Okay you just don't like criticism of Dehn. But this discussion is
about the BATTLE script, not about Goldfinger or Texas or some other crap that
writers put out. Jacobs rejected Dehn's original BATTLE script because it
wasn't good enough even though Dehn had done the three earlier movies. I do
like all of the POTA writers including Mike Wilson, Serling, the Corringtons,
and Paul Dehn. It was Dehn who created the Aldo character in the first place
and also started the clever Caesar/Christ parallels in ESCAPE that were
continued in BATTLE. But Dehn is not above screwing up as his changes to
BATTLE prove.

What Marvel said is immaterial. They didn't print the screenplay
they printed an adaption in comic form. We haven't read that script
and we don't know for certain what changes they made or didn't make.
So there is no way comment on the quality of the script without ever
having read it. Would you review 'War & Peace' the novel based on a
film, TV or comic adaption? I think not.

I don't like any critism of someone who is dead and can't respond,
30 years after the fact, by someone who wasn't involved in the
filmmaking process. Particularly when those that were there and were
involved say exactly the opposite.

Now you're revising history. Jacobs thought the original Battle
script was too dark and asked for a major rewrite. But Dehn was ill
at the time so they brought in the Corringtons to do the rewrite.
Dehn was brought back and the Corrington's discharged as soon as he
was well enough because of the dissatifaction with their work by J.
Lee Thompson and others.

Dehn saved Battle but even he couldn't fix all the problems inherent
in the Corrington's script.

>Ok, you lost me What the heck is "Apeslayer"...?
Glad you asked! "Apeslayer" was a comic strip that ran in issues 23-30 of
Marvel UK's weekly "POTA" comic magazine, the only strip from that series
that was not a reprint of a US story. It originally appeared in Marvel's
"Killraven" series and was adapted to fit the "Apes" mythos when Marvel ran
short of "POTA" material for the British weeklies. The translation is
sloppy at best, with references to Killraven still interspersed throughout
the story due to lazy copy-editing, and inconsistencies with Apes continuty
abounding. Still, it's fun from an "I can't believe they actually published
this" standpoint. :)

Oh.... but they are, my friend. They are. Don't say you weren't warned. :)

I've never done it before so I'm not exactly sure how, but I'll give it a
shot. I've scanned a total of 39 pages so far -- 35 pages of strips from
issues 23-26, plus the 4 covers. In the next day or two, I'll have issues
27-30 out as well. In the end, it'll come out to 75 pages of strips and 8
covers, for a total of 83 covers. Will that be too much for me to load? <.html

- - - Tim Burton
During a train ride as a young man, Tim Burton had an inspiration. Quickly
grabbing the nearest piece of paper he could find, he made a notation and
drew a quick sketch of his brainchild, a chimpanzee named Thade. At the time
the character was conceived as an amiable, "friend to the world" type and
Burton chose him to star in an animated short he was developing, "Steamboat
Zauis". The first ever gothic cartoon with sound, the film quickly
established Burton's reputation. He went on to make a series of short films
starring Thade and his friends, and they were embraced by the public.
But as he moved into feature films, Burton left his simian cohorts behind
to concentrate on other ideas. He was successful, with such films as "Pee
Wee's Big Adventure", "Beetlejuice" and "Batman" establishing him as a
cherished artist. Then he expanded into the brave new worlds of television
and theme parks in the '50's. "The Edward Scissorhands Show" became a staple
and the omnipresent "scissor caps" became an icon of boys' heads everywhere.
He opened Nightmare Before ChristmasLand, his groundbreaking theme park,
even though the rides didn't run that first day. In fact, they never ran
during the park's history. Explained Burton,"Everyone expects to go to a
theme park and go on the rides. It's one of the crazier aspects of society
that we automatically assume things will be perfect. Life's not like that. I
thought it would be interesting if the rides didn't work. What would people
do then?" Though at first miffed, the patrons decided it was just an example
of Burton's unique genius. He went further, and kept his shops on
Skellington Street closed, to see what would happen. Though no rides was
fine, keeping the shops closed cut into revenues and the park was forced to
close for good.
But Burton continued to find success in motion pictures and eventually
decided to bring his ape characters (Thade and the rest) to a feature film
of their own. Eccentric billionaire Richard Zanuck, impressed by Burton's
luck with the public, agreed to make it a reality. As he said at the time,
"The combination of Tim Burton's safe just spells magic to me". But Burton
had his own ambitions: " Some movies come out and they're big hits. Other
movies come out and just do OK. But everybody TRIES to make a hit, which
gets boring. I wondered what it would be like to try and make a movie that
would just do OK. Nobody sets out to do a movie like that. What would that
be like? I thought it would be interesting."
As for a game plan: "When you go to a hit movie, like "The Matrix", it
works on two levels. There's the special effects and the visuals that make
it...uh, look fantastic. That's one thing. Then there's another thing, the
story and the characters. People want to tgo to a movie and see characters
they care about and like, so they become involved in the story. But what if
you deny them that? Then they say, "Oh, I don't like this character, so I
don't care about this movie!" or "That's not logical, it's taking me out of
the movie. I don't believe in it". That type of thing. So that was my
approach, to take some of that story stuff out of there as an experiment".
Of course, after the movie came out (it just did OK) and Zanuck heard such
comments, he was livid and threatened to sue. But Burton got defensive and
explained, " Look, it's my career, nobody elses'. You can't always have
success or you don't grow. Failure is also a part of it."
So, what does the future hold for Tim Burton? It's too soon to tell but
chances are he will remain a Master of Goth. (the canned '50's music plays
vibrantly as the end title appears: THE END - - A Walt Disney Picture).
Happy 1st Anniversary, POTA2001. May you have many more!

My Favourite spoof has to be The Simpsons musical. Pure genius. I like the

.html Well, I've uploaded some of the files to Yahoo, but I got a message after
only a few, saying that our space limits were used up. Apparently, we're
allotted about 5 megs of space, which is a lot less than the Apeslayer

I've saved the 39 files in four zip files, each approx. 11 megs in size. I
can send them to the group, but I don't know if everyone can receive files

back on the same theme that crossed over into each members' own book. Batman

Not only I but everyone one owns the "nearly verbatim adaptation" from
the Marvel magazine can easily see for themselves that the earlier BATTLE
script was better than the one with Dehn's crappy hacks.
Here is that proof again, for easy reference.
Why the final film was so completely altered, I don't
know...

the one where the City of Townsville has been overrun by intelligent
apes. With the ruins of the city burning in the background, evil
monkey Mojo Jojo, standing on the steps of city hall, adresses the
apes and surviving humans and gives an impassioned speech about how
he will be the ruler of a planet of apes.

*** There was a SIMPSONS episode where Reverend Lovejoy has to rescue
somebody on a rollercoaster at a theme park from attacking baboons (or
something like that); his next sermon is a gripping description of
that adventure... and the church sign outside reads: "CONQUEST OF THE
PLANET OF THE APES"! That's the first one I remember seeing (of
CONQUEST, I mean).
I can't remember the episode's title, but the "X-FILES" had a great
episode about cockroaches... and scattered throughout it were all
sorts of "POTA" references. Not so much a spoof, but entertaining
nonetheless. One of the episodes of the spinoff "The Lone Gunmen"
series involved a bunch of rather smart chimpanzees in an institute
run by a "Dr. Hasslips". Not only was that episode fantastic, but the
short-lived (sob!) series was generally well done. Too bad they
cancelled it... and killed off the characters in "X-FILES". The debut
episode of "Lone Gunmen" was--in retrospect--rather chilling: a group
of covert government bad guys find a way to override the programming
of a commercial jet's navigational computers... and try to fly it
>SLAM BANG< into one of the WORLD TRADE CENTER towers! Of course, the plot is foiled by our stalwart geek-heroes... but, remember, this episode aired long before "9/11". Not that Osama bin Laden got his horrid idea from watching the FOX channel on Satellite...

.htmlI'm sure it is legit, Rory.
For it's the same guy, Matt Sotis, who runs this web site.
http://msotis.home.mindspring.com/
Matt also told me he will be sending me a copy of his Planet of the Men
video. Snap Shots can be seen on his web site under "video".
He was thrilled to not only receive payment for the Conquest UNcut, but also
for my Battle UNcut DVD that I sent with it.
One hand washes the other, so if all goes well, all of us will be in for
some great POTA treats from, Sotis as well. All on DVD.
Best.
Al

*** Alex, I'll bear your children if that's what it takes to get a
copy of "CONQUEST Uncut", although I hope it won't come to that!
By the way, I checked out Matt Sotis' website
[http://msotis.home.mindspring.com]
and I'm curious as to why he has prices listed for various items
there, yet doesn't have an E-mail address for us to send him a line
and order them. I've been looking for a "CONQUEST" script, and he's
got one for $15.00, supposedly. Any chance you could post a note
regarding this? Or get HIM to post a note? Danke schoen, darlin',
danke schoen...
