*** Is it "Quintus"? I don't think he's listed in the end credits, is
he? Is "Quintus" from the script? I'll have to check my copy of it;
the version online at
http://scifiscripts.com/scripts/planetofapes67.txt
doesn't have the mother ape's line. Here's an excerpt:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
251 FLASH SHOT - TAYLOR

He runs again.

252 MED. SHOT - AN APE MOTHER AND CHILD

Looking at the stuffed animals as Taylor races past. The mother
gives a startled SCREAM.

253 REACTION SHOT - A MUSEUM GUARD

He starts after the fugitive.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, there's no dialogue in (at least this version of)
the script, so the chimp kid's name isn't officially Quintus or
Quentin, or anything else. It sure sounds like "Quentin" to me,
but that's just subjective on my part. Where did you hear that the
name was "Quintus"? Is it in any other version/draft of the
screenplay? Inquiring minds want to know...

Jeff is right.. Listen to that mother chimp, she clearly says Quintus... The "s" sound is audible...

Yeah, I knew something was wrong there, and why would you want to bother casting someone for a minor walk-on?   That's like writing Robert DeNiro for one of the apes that throws fruit at Heston.

I was going to suggest Peter Ustinov as Zaius, but given the laborious
make-up involved I'd say he probably would be too old.

And Quintus is a far more "PotA-sounding" name than Quentin as well.

I would have too agree with that.
I thought 6th sense wasn't that great. It was just the ending that made up
for the whole boring film. I don't know when we will ever see another shock
ending like that again. Sort of like POTA's shock ending, although unlike
6th sense, POTA was great through and through.

Best.

I didn't think "The Sixth Sense" was that great either, still don't.  Didn't like "Unbreakable" that much too, but "Signs" entertained me all the way.  Sure, it takes the kind of suspension of disbelief I guess Patrick doesn't care to give it, but I can forget about that.  My first thought after it finished was. . . . SPOILER WARNING. . . .

"What are the aliens going to do when it rains?" but so what?  I've always found it pretty ridiculous that aliens would come all this way just to try and take the earth from us.  This planet is so full of germs and tiny forms of life it's really a shit pile when you think of it.  We're all born in a dung heap and die in a dung heap.  Right now as you read this there are tiny creatures on you and within you that are excreting all the time, especially you, Patrick.  They're in your bed, your clothes, your water, your food -- everywhere!  In fact, you've got things in your gut that if they weren't there you wouldn't be able to digest your food!  IT'S A MADHOUSE!!!

Maybe Gary Coleman for the obligatory Has-been cameo.

I just played that section of the DVD.  I hear, and have always heard, the she-ape say "Quintus," but the closed-captioning  in English does have it as "Quentin."  However, I've listen to the line several times now and it's "Quintus" to me.

I thoroughly enjoyed SS, thinking it was original.

I guessed the twist, which was sad because I only guessed from everyone

It was just the ending that made up for the whole boring film

It was obvious to me. Until POTA2001 I never felt so cheated out of my
surprise ending! I haven't seen a surprise ending since the Usual Suspects.

But we discussed this before

And Quintus is a far more "PotA-sounding" name than Quentin as well.

He must be thinking of the werewolf from Dark Shadows.

I thought your website was awesome - just that the movie was a piece
of shit. That's not your fault. With all the money, time and
resources allocated to it, the movie should have been at least good
if not terrific.

I'm wondering how Cougar knew the whole time it would be

I'd have to agree with Whitty on this one. I'll admit curiousity had gotten the best of me while, and I had checked out your sight (albeit only very shortly.) Your sight itself was well designed, thought out, maintained, etc., you have nothing to regret in doing it. The movie was something you were looking forward to very much, there was nothing wrong with your "countdown" to it's release.

I'm wondering how Cougar knew the whole time it would be

Whitty... Nope, no sabotage on my part. Just a gut feeling, a feeling that they were going to try to "reinvent the wheel" so to speak. They took a good name and (basically) killed it. "Killed it" with their MTVing it, taking that great name and bringing it down to the level of every other sfx movie. SFX and a modern twist on the make-up do not make it POTA... I said it then, and I'll say it now. I could go on, but my views on it are pretty much known to those who've been in the group awhile. I know there are some in here that "did" like it, so I won't start up the "battle" again... At least not right now... I'll wait 'til we have another quiet week like we had last week... J/K.

Thanks, guys.
I did put my heart and soul into it, only to be asked in the end. "what the
hell was that ending all about!" With so many films making a comeback with
sequels and so on, POTA had it's chance and they blew it. Well, at least my
second favorite Sci-Fi is making a comeback and chances are it's going to be
a winner. Simpley becuase, Burton isn't making it. :o)

Not that my opinion matters much, but I like it for the most part. Two things though, I don't like background sounds on web pages and you could use a menu of some sort in the left frame. Like a DHTML or Java menu. Maybe even a fancy area map. On a scale of 1 - 10, I'd give it a 6.

Yes, that's true. It wasn't until another Cameron film, "Terminator 2",
that the world box office was actively courted and now elsewhere can be half
the box office, or more. Japan saved "Pearl Harbor" and "A.I."'s asses.
Besides, no one from "Gone With the Wind" is alive to enjoy their dough.
Hah! I said "asses". Etc. - - - Jeff

Even adjusted for inflation, "The Exorcist" is #9 of all time? That's
incredible for that kind of movie. Of course they build that kind of money
with rereleases, something they don't do anymore. It's first run and then
straight to video and cable. - - Jeff

Just got the Lord of the Rings DVD 2 -Disc Set.
Has the movie, trailers, t.v. spots, Fox Special, Sci-Fi Special and a few
other tid bits including Two Towers preview. Not bad.
Now the real amazing thing here is that in the DVD we find out there's going
to be a 4-Dics Set coming out in a couple of months with ten times as much.
Including a director's cut of an extra 30 min. of footage.

Boy, can some say...RIP OFF!
They know everyone who is a fan is going to buy this DVD 2 disc set only to
buy the 4-disc set later on. That's now two copies of LOTR every LOTR fan
will have.

I would love to see a special edition 4 disc of TITANIC!
Hell, I would buy two, one for me and one for, Rory. I'm sure he'll love it!

I got mine yesterday too.

What a great movie.

Yes, I'll also be lining up for the next release (I heard it is
actually a 5 disc set), but many will be happy with their cheap movie
DVD and not need the special edition.

Since you brought it up, Cameron shot an IMAX documentary about the
Titanic with Bill Paxton as narrator. They dove at the actual wreck and they
also recreated some stuff where at the studio where they filmed the movie.
They also filmed stuff for the "Titanic" Special Ed. DVD. The movie is
called "Ghosts of the Abyss". It'll be 45 minutes at Imax, then a 90 minute
DVD. Check out his nonfiction website www.earthship.com for details. - -

Boy, can some say...RIP OFF!

The studio would call it Marketing. Pretty smart too as they now they'll
sell a shit load more. I think the Aussie Distributor ( Village Roadshow)
have factored in the potential consumer backlash to the extra extra 4 disc
special edition by making the 2 disc set comparable to most single disc
releases. Check out DVDfile.com for all the latest announcements of upcoming
DVD releases.

What I meant to say there was comparable in price.
And yes, I now 'know' is spelt 'know', not 'now'
And yes, I misspelled 'spelled' on purpose in case any of you Spelling Bees

From what I understand, there are no repeats. The current DVD is
promotional stuff, TV specials, etc. Plus the original cut. The next one is
all original extras plus the director's cut. So it's not like you're paying
twice for stuff. At least it's a good movie. I think they put out 3 editions
of "Pearl Harbor". Plus the 4 discs is just for fans. Most people won't
bother with it. Etc. - - - Jeff

It will all be original stuff on each DVD set, so your really geting a 6 set
DVD (if you buy both) plus two versions of he movie.
I guess I can live with that. :o)

Never was much for Lord of the Rings until I saw the movie.
Very well made.

Best.

Yeah, hopefuly I'll have the Universal Studios ride, T2 3D Battle accross
time on the site. In hi-res real player format. All 10 to 20 min. of it.
Watchable but not downloadable. For copyright sake.

Putting the 'me' 'me' 'me' in Multimedia. :o)

Anyone know anything about these? (other than the winning bidder being
rather familiar)

Do they contain any original material (albeit in French)... anyone?

You negative nelly you!

The 4 (or 5) disc set is ALL NEW.

Deleted scenes have been added where they were missing from, not just
thrown on separately and with different colouration/crap all over the
screen as with most deleted scenes. All the extras on the other
discs are different to those on the 2 disc set too.

The 2 disc set only cost $30 AUS, compared to POTA 2001 that cost
$54.95 AUS (almost twice the price for a fifth of the movie - good
work Fox). So long as the 5 disc set does not cost a fortune (I
think it will be around $50 AUS) it will actually reflect good value
for money to me and those who just want the movie get it for $30 -
less than most new DVD releases here.

My gripe is with releases like the Twilight Zone original series.
They have released discs with 3 or 4 episodes, with no continuity to
them (on one disc you often get an episode from 3 or for different
series) and no extras! At $35 each! And you just know when they
have milked that dry they will release season Box Sets where you will
pay so much less.

Oh well, that's Hollywood......

Holy crap, that's a big price difference. Around here most DVDs are the
same price, depending on number of discs, not movie titles. Almost twice as
much for POTA than LOTR? No wonder you hate the movie so

Not negative, realistic.
What, you think the DVD format was created to satisfy the fans? It's so we
can shell out more money for movies we already own on VHS because the VHS
market had levelled out and something was needed to rejuvenate hardware (
and subsequently software ) sales.
Also, it's my understanding that Roadshow will only be releasing the 4 disc
special edition as they do not have distribution rights in this country for
the National Geographic DVD. The National Geographic DVD is part of the
collectors edition packaging to be released in the U.S. that also includes a
set of figurines.

No, that's Australia. We have "Twilight Zone" for $19 each (I can get it
for $14 at DVDPlanet). And here I was jealous when you guys got the "Apes"

Have you guys ever thought of just renting?  Over here in the States Blockbuster has gotten on the DVD bandwagon, and there are plenty of places on the web that have the rarer stuff.

Speaking of TV on DVD, "The Outer Limits" first season comes out Sept. 3, pretty much all the good episodes (32 of 'em), including John Chamber's "Sixth Finger" show. My favorite is "The Zanti Misfits" about the alien bugs. Scared me more than any movie or TV thing when I was a kid!   - - - Jeff

Yes, that is my attitude.  There was no living without them back in the late Eighties and early Nineties.  It was the only place you were going to get anything letterboxed for a long time.  If you were a movie nut it was a must have.  Luckily for me I didn't have the money to buy everything I wanted.  I know guys who bought hundreds!   Joe Russo bought the entire original Star Trek series on LD.  Now he's using them for Frisbees.

Good point Nelly!

To prove the point, I recently attempted to sell some Clint Eastwood
Collection Videos on ebay. They cost me $34.95 plus about $8 postage
each. They were all mint, sealed as I got them (I bought them to
collect as I have seen them all many times).

I got few bids but some sold for $10 each!

I think the future of VHS lies with audio tapes and cartridges and
Beta - grim.

Renting schmenting!

I have seen nearly all the DVDs I buy and I buy them to have them on
hand.

I have spent a fortune on a good surround system and I get a lot of
pleasure form viewing the DVDs - it is really like watching them anew
("Like a Virgin- HEY!").

OK, that was bad - sorry!

I can understand that.  I got the Kim Hunter movie Young Stranger on LD because it wasn't available on anything else, and I have no player either.  I guess I can watch it at school in the AV Lab.  My half-bro had Apes on Beta as well as lots of other movies.  He got Beta because it was the better system, but as we know, that doesn't always mean anything.  Better means more expensive so it lost the battle.  I wonder if he still has it?

Michael,

To put it simply, they cut out a good 5 minutes or so per episode. Small scenes cut out, or scenes cut into... Lines deleted, etc... All done in the sweet name of making room for more commercials...

*** There was a time, alas, when the ONLY way to get "Planet of the
Apes" in widescreen format was on laserdisc. Who knew that DVDs were
only a few years down the line? So, yeah, I bought a laserdisc player
and around 2 dozen laserdiscs (including the "I, Claudius" series,
which--if you haven't seen--y'all SHOULD see); the APES discs I
managed to track down before they were put on moratorium were PLANET,
ESCAPE, and CONQUEST (both BENEATH and BATTLE were nowhere to be found
by the time I started investing in laserdiscs, dammit!).
By the way, I know a guy who has the original ("real") versions of the
STAR WARS trilogy on laserdisc--before the "special editions" came
out. Since Lucas will NOT be releasing the "untweaked" original cuts
of SW, TESB, & ROTJ, then the ONLY way to see widescreen versions of
those flicks as they were originally conceived is on the laserdisc
version (which, of course, is now no longer in production). Having
heard that Lucas may very well re-re-release "STAR WARS" with (ugh!)
Jar Jar Binks digitally added to it when he finally DOES release it on
DVD (after Episode III's theatrical run), I'm grateful for the
opportunity to see an unsullied "STAR WARS". The "Greedo-shooting-
first" tweak was one of the stupidest things Lucas has ever done (as
bad or worse than his ruination of "HOWARD THE DUCK"--which was a
great comic, but a crappy movie)... but if he puts Jar Jar into
"Episode IV", he'll sink to an even lower low.

*** Are you sure that the pre-Special Edition versions were released
in widescreen on VHS? I held off buying STAR WARS (etc) on tape
because it was NOT in widescreen, and wasn't available (as far as I
could tell) until the "updated" Special Editions were put out. I
bought the boxed-set of widescreen Special Edition trilogy, but I
thought that that was the first release on VHS of any widescreen STAR
WARS stuff. I could be wrong about this, though; however, it IS true
that Lucas has informed us that the SW trilogy--when it is released on
DVD--will NOT be the "original" versions, but the Special Edition
versions ("Greedo-shoots-first", Jabba's scene, Biggs at Yavin, etc.).
The original versions will never be made available by Lucas (unless
somebody with a working voodoo doll of him can "force" him to do so!),
since "his" films are continual "works-in-progress".
Regardless, those VHS tapes will eventually deteriorate and/or get
"eaten" by VCRs. The laserdiscs will last much much longer.

It's still worth it for some rare things. For example, it doesn't sound like Lucas is going to put the original versions of "Star Wars" on DVD, so those with the laserdiscs will have good quality archives of those. The "Jaws" laserdisc is much more comprehensive than the DVD, so is "Close Encounters". There's lots of examples like that. - - - Jeff

Laserdiscs are forever, VHS isn't. Come to think of it, we're not forever
either so who cares? But if Cornelius digs up the laserdisc, he can watch

In the early Nineties only PLANET, BENEATH, ESCAPE and CONQUEST were released in Widescreen Editions on Laserdisc.  PLANET looked horrible and had fake stereo made from mono tracks.  I sold my BENEATH LD to Chris Sausville because he wanted it for his collection.  I couldn't have cared less by that time.  Once the THX LDs came out of all five that was all I'd look at, although as soon as they did come out I started writing to Fox asking them to get the movies out on DVD as soon as possible.

I have those THX LDs of the original versions of the STAR WARS movies.  My laserdiscs still have some use.  I have a very nice letterboxed edition of THE OMEGA MAN.  Who knows why that'll ever get released on LD.  Also, Roman Polanski's THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS letterboxed, that's another favorite of mine.  Ape-wise, I have a nice double feature LD of KING KONG and SON OF KONG.  Now why KING KONG isn't yet on DVD I have no idea.

Actually the glue that holds both sides of the laserdiscs together rots with time putting white specks in the picture.  I have a few that are very annoying to watch because of that.  Just another reason why DVDs are so much better.  Also LDs are analog and that's fast going the way of the dinosaur.

.htmlOkay since it's slowed down yet again let me ask these questions of ya all (and give reasons when you answer):

1.  In order of preference what would you rate as the top FIVE performances by an actor (and actress) as an ape in all the POTA films and TV series, including the new movie?   (And don't just give the TV show, but name the episode.)

2.  Which do you think was Roddy McDowall's best performance as a chimpanzee:  PLANET, ESCAPE, CONQUEST, BATTLE or a certain TV show episode, and why?  Which do you think was his worst?

OK, discuss amongst yourselves.

"King Kong" is supposed to come out on DVD this year but I haven't heard anything. "All That Jazz", too. Can't complain ; there's such a thing as delays. I'd rather they do it right. That's why I can't complain about Lucas not putting the flicks on DVD. He doesn't have time to do it right. We complain when we have to buy movies twice and we complain when they don't get herefast enough. Fast food. - - - Jeff

the APES discs I
managed to track down before they were put on moratorium were PLANET,
ESCAPE, and CONQUEST (both BENEATH and BATTLE were nowhere to be found
by the time I started investing in laserdiscs, dammit!).
By the way, I know a guy who has the original ("real") versions of the
STAR WARS trilogy on laserdisc--before the "special editions" came
out. Since Lucas will NOT be releasing the "untweaked" original cuts

I'd have to say that I've never been inspired by Natalie Trundy's performance as Lisa in Battle. She just didn't 'work' the appliances as well as Kim Hunter did. I don't know how much that has to do with the less elaborate make-up in comparison to Planet.
Second, would be Lisa Marie in POTA2001, she sounded like she had a mouth full of marbles when she spoke. I think her choppers were too big...no wonder Burton ditched her.

Yeah, I agree.  I don't think Natalie Trundy was really that into it in BATTLE.  She was a little better in CONQUEST but of course had little to do.  I think Jeff might disagree here.

Oh, and Bobby Porter wasn't much better. he may as well have been wearing a football helmet backwards for the amount of emotion he conveyed under the make up. I'm still thinking about my favourite performances, etc. ( that etc means etcetera, I wasn't copying Jeff's sign off....in case you were wondering ).

OK Here goes!!!

Question #1
1. Kim Hunter in Planet. Her humanity really shows through the make-
up.
2. Maurice Evans in Planet. He really made Zaius a villan whose
motivations were understandable and I loved the way he snarled some
of his lines.
3. Roddy in Conquest. Probably one of his most dynamic performances
He makes the transformation from naive vistor to revolutional leader
believable.
4. James Gregory in Beneath. Ursus' speech is the only high point in
that film. It's such a wonderful mix of racism, religious
demagoguery and blind patriotism. Not even Bill O'Reilly could have
done it better.
5. Percy Rodriguez in "The Tyrant". Played the role with
intelligence rather than as the typical dumb gorilla. Plus his body
movements were so convincing you could believe he was an ape.

Question #2
Conquest was his best. Hard to say which was his worst since I don't
think he gave a bad performance. But due to the script I'd pick
Battle.

Question #3
Mark Lenard as Urko. Played the role as a total moron. Don't think
he'd become chief of security if Urko were stupid. Plus just not
beefy enough to be a gorilla.
