3.  Who gave the single worst performance as an ape in all of POTAdom, and why?

At this very moment, I gotta go with Virgil... He's just so poorly written, and the acting itself is nothing to write home about...

4. James Gregory in Beneath. Ursus' speech is the only high point in
that film. It's such a wonderful mix of racism, religious
demagoguery and blind patriotism. Not even Bill O'Reilly could have
done it better.
5. Percy Rodriguez in "The Tyrant". Played the role with
intelligence rather than as the typical dumb gorilla. Plus his body
movements were so convincing you could believe he was an ape.

Well, I see we agree on three of your top 5... No, I didn't set down and think of two others ("yet"), but these three are right on...

Can't really argue. She didn't have much to do in either "Conquest" or "Battle". Kim Hunter had the better role and was the better actress. Natalie did well in "Escape", and she's the audience's perspective at the end.  - - - Jeff

I'd have to say that I've never been inspired by Natalie Trundy's performance as Lisa in Battle. She just didn't 'work' the appliances as well as Kim Hunter did. I don't know how much that has to do with the less elaborate make-up in comparison to Planet.

Yeah, I agree.  I don't think Natalie Trundy was really that into it in BATTLE.  She was a little better in CONQUEST but of course had little to do.  I think Jeff might disagree here.

Yeah, it's interesting. People either love Urko or they hate him. I always
loved him, I didn't find him one-dimensional. The show played up the
"stupid" aspect of the gorillas for humor (not the actor's fault) but Urko
was sympathetic at times, scary at times, a wide range, one of the benefits
of the unending appetite of TV. Like Roddy said, he had the time to try
different things. I found Ursus one-note. Etc. - - - Jeff

I just talked to Matt a couple of days ago and Matt told me he was sending
it the next day. Which should have been yesterday. It's just that he was
making a copy of his Planet of the Men video to send me as well. So it might
take a couple of more days before it reaches me.

Planet of the Men is still not complete, but I believe he has the first 30
min. of it for me to see.

I'll let you all know as soon as I get Conquest.
Meanwhile, I've just transfered all files to my new site and domain name.
Details can be seen at: www.calima5021.com

The end of another era, sniff, sniff. And the beginning of a new Countdown
and sleepless nights.
Oh, boy. :o(

But it's the only real way to really enjoy all the B.S. hype to come.

Best.

And what is 'Planet of the Men' exactly? I know it's Boulle's original
Planet sequel treatment but what has Matt done...made a video using custom
megos?
Do tell.

.htmlWell, looks like I'm going to be the first to post this here.  I've just seen on TV that Charlton Heston has Alzheimer's disease.  It's just in the beginning phase, but you know how these things go.  Heston has said he has no intention of giving up or giving in.  Good luck to him.  I suppose this will lead to a lot of jokes here, but it's a reminder to us all of what it's like getting old.  I've made more than my share of fun of Chuck, but he was my favorite movie star for a long time, and even though I despise his political opinions on most things, I wish him well.

Charlton Heston Ailing
News sources report that actor Charlton Heston
, Oscar winner for Ben-Hur , has symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's, and is making a statement now out of concern he may not be able to later. "I'm neither giving up nor giving in," the 78-year-old Heston said in statement played at a news conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel. "I wanted to prepare a few words for you now because when the time comes I may not be able to. I worked my whole life on the stage and screen before you. I found purpose and meaning in your response. For an actor, there is no greater loss than the loss of his audience. I can part the Red Sea, but I can't part with you." –Prepared by IMDB staff

I am often not in agreement with his political views, but I have a great respect for the actor, and for the integrity and the "no nonsense" approach of things of the man.

With some luck and with his fighting spirit, it can be hoped CH will have many other fruitful years to live before the worse happens.

            Subject: Conquest UNcut.
            .html
Well, just got through seeing Conquest UNcut.
Quality on a scale from 1-10 is a 7, very good and in widescreen.
There's a lot of the original and different scores in the film during many
scenes, along with many extended short scenes with the battles against the
            military police.

Also many bizarre edited scenes found very different than the original
release. For example: When the chimp sets the dinning room on fire, we see
this during the time that apes are purposely being sent to ape management.
In this UNcut version, he's setting the dinning room on fire when the apes
are fighting the military police. Which makes a lot more scenes when seeing
the great fires in the city at the end of the film.

Also when Caesar leaves the shock table, he goes and takes a second look at
his circus photo before rejoining his revolutionary apes.

Flame thrower gets set on fire, military police being thrown through windows
and being chocked as they're standing through the broken glass.
More scenes on police getting the crap knocked out of them, police with
bashed heads full of blood next to the Governor during the end in Caesar's
            speech.

During ape management revolt scene, we see an ape trainer cracking his whip
            to scare off the apes.

Many, many, violent scenes and a very erie soundtrack along with it.
Now I can see why mothers were walking their children out during the preview
of this film. If you didn't know any better, you would think that Satan
himself had directed this film. :o) It seems that violent, and along with
            this soundtrack, man.

Original release ending (the added ending) was left intact for completeness
            sake.
But everything else seems to be legit and all original.

Planet of the Men, I'll have details later on today.
For right now, it's 3:00 AM and I need some sleep.
I just hope I don't have nightmares over this.
            I need my teddy :o)

            Best.
            Al

              Conquest is a DUD.
The only thing different on this Conquest is the music, which clearly could
have been re-edited. And the two scenes: Flame Thrower on fire, and police
thrown through the window. (which is a different angle shot, from what we
              see in the official release)
Both these exclusive scenes can been seen in the Conquest 'Trailer'.
So Mr.. Sotis simply used his editing skills to add these to clips, and
re-edited the music. This thing is home made, and not an original
              pre-release.

The way I found out was that, I saw Conquest and matched the scenes,
everything is there except the two exclusive scenes on the trailer. I just
haven't seen the movie in a long time, and re-mixed with this erie music,
you seem to see it in a much different way.

So the satan director to this cut is non other than, Matt Sotis himself. :o)
There's this one point in the film where a trainer says "NO" and the
japanese subtitle is seen below the widescreen. So he did this widescreen
version from the Japanese Laser disc.

This is clearly a rip off. And a very well made rip off for that matter.

              juuust... great.

That's true, they pretty much milked the statue revelation dry with the ' 98 releases on video, and again on the subsequent dvds... Hopefully they will redesign the packaging... Yeah, I heard about that too... It was included in the novelization and the Marvel adaption... I've never read any of the script drafts, so I'm not sure how many included that scene in them.

The problem there is that they aren't rare enough. There is definitely
still a healthy demand for videos, but these days it's for the rare,
usually older, out of print ones. If you've got videos that are hard
              to find then you're in. I bought a He-Man (!) video from a charity
shop for £3 - eBay fetched me £26 for it.

              Alan
PS On the other hand, I also had a video which was still available for
£15 and yet when I got rid of it on eBay it went for £23!

I don't know that I'd be able to pick five favourite performances as
apes, but I think Maurice Evans in the original PotA might be worth a
              shout.

Roddy's best - Caesar in Conquest. He wasn't aggressive enough in
Battle, and I don't really think Cornelius had the same impact, even
              in Escape.

I don't know about worst performance either... Alma in Battle wasn't
too great. (Not related to the performance but did anyone notice that
she couldn't even operate that loudspeaker system properly and yet
they left her in charge of a NUCLEAR BOMB?!?)

Another unsung "bad" performance has to be the guy that I know only as
"the Hail Caesar guy". In the aftermath of Battle's confrontation
between ape and mutant, as Caesar walks through the city being
applauded, you just keep hearing this one guy shouting HAIL CAESAR,
again and again and again... I can't watch that scene without thinking
"who the hell is that guy?!?"

That is exactly what Fox did with the FLINT movies released on DVD last month.  They kept the original poster art, but the title logos were made to look like Austin Powers and Powers is even mentioned on the covers!  Shameful huckstering.  I'm sure that whatever Fox does when they re-issue the APES films will probably not please me.

Reading Matthew's item description for his Ebay auction, he certainly
doesn't give the potential bidders a hint that he's offering up some
homemade hack job. This is quite clearly misleading and also a breach of
copyright laws ( He's profiteering from material he doesn't own). Alex, did
you contact him and request a refund before leaving the negative feedback?
If you did and he didn't offer it, then he certainly deserves the neg
feedback in my opinion. Once I bought a cardboard cut out Galen mask from
England via Ebay, the seller never once indicated it was a laser copy and
not the original. When I asked for a refund he told me it was my fault for
not asking if it was original in the first place! Sure, that may be the case
but the item was presented as if it was original, like the Conquest video
you just shelled out $41 for. You have to admire Matthew's initiative, but
he's not going to get a very good reputation if he rips people off. But from
my experience from Ebay, any deadbeat can become a dealer and it really pays
              to ask questions first.
              Best,

I agree with what you said, Ken.
I e-mailed Matt twice before the auction ended. While he did reply to one
e-mail, he didn't reply to the other. Which was questions regarding the
Conquest video origin. HE NEVER REPLIED to that one. Combine that with his
description on e-bay, and what you have is a con job.

I'm sure he did it as a fan for himself, but to sell it as some type of
legit original is not right. And even if he did offer a refund, I would
still post the negative feedback, because who is to say that he won't do it
              again?

Personally, I don't care for a refund. If he offers it, fine, if he doesn't,
I'm not going to cry over the $50.00. total I sent, because I felt it was
worth it. And I'm not even going to e-mail him. If he's at least, half the
man he thinks he is, I'll let him e-mail me over this negative feedback. If
              not, life goes on.
We live and learn on both sides, as I have his Planet of the Men.

              The truth is, Ken.
If I never would have figured it out. He never would have told me, as he
never replied to that e-mail question. And, Jeff could back me up on that.
As I told him about it a while back.
So I really don't care to deal with people like that. He can keep it.

              Best.

It was shot and parts of it are still in the film in another context. I
should ask Bill Blake about it. He was there for part of the filming of
"Conquest". But definitely, that's how the movie opened in the original cut,
but they took it out when they made it "kinder and gentler".

I think Fox realizes POTA2001 didn't go over well and they would probably
distance it. Zanuck said Fox is still interested in another one down the
road, so perhaps they're doing all this activities with the originals
(releasing the Medicoms, anniversary stuff on AMC, new doc?) to woo back the

Well, it did seem like a long shot, though I'd heard there was a longer
version of "Conquest" out there (though creating one using the trailers is
original). Another long shot is that Fox will dig up the version and have J.
Lee do a commentary while he's still here. I think he'd want to do it. I
sensed some bitterness in the documentary over the way things turned out,
especially since these days he might best be known for "Apes" by the younger

Could you please forward to the group?

I have been reading through the posts and I wanted to make a few comments.

First, the cover art for Beneath and Planet on that website are far superior to what Fox came up with.

The first place I would always look would be an original colour poster advertising the film from the era in which it was released.  Just common sense hey?

Also, what a shame about the Conquest DVD.  Alex, did you actually email him with the question "Is this the original or just a home made backyard job?".  If so, he should be strung up by the proverbial......

Jeff, you know Eric Greene (spelling?) don't you?  If so, invite him to hop on and chat with us.  He might be able to tell us where the photo of the deleted scene came from and he may even know if a lot of the deleted/unused stuff we desire EXISTS (a good place to start).

Now what is going on with this "Planet of Men" thing?  Are the fill in scenes good quality?  Are the ape costumes good?  Who plays Taylor? (tee hee hee!!!).

Best wishes to all - I am lurking until Yahoo! gets its shit together!

I still have to wonder if it's all true -- anniversary stuff on AMC and a new documentary? -- I can't imagine Fox would spend the money on a new APES documentary, not unless they found a lot more stuff down in the salt mines, the one from AMC was good enough, a bit over the top with praise, but OK.

All I really want is PLANET in anamorphic and a better stereo surround mix with directional dialogue like all the stereo Fox films had from that time.  Damn the bastards who lost PLANET's original stereo tracks!

It is a long shot and I doubt Thompson will live long enough to do it.  Some APES fan out there in L.A. should find out where he lives (I believe he's in CA somewhere) and sit down with him and watch the movie on video and tape a commentary with him.  Then sell it to Fox.  Joe Russo has one with Ted Post while they both watched BENEATH, but it was done twenty years ago and it's not like the usual commentary tracks, it's very informal.  Post mostly complains about how this or that should have been done better.

Have you listened to Thompson's commentary on the "Navarone" DVD?  I tired, but he bored me so much I turned it off.  He's very old now.

That's not a bad idea of someone tracking him down and getting his commentary taped and ("hopefully") sold to, and used by Fox. But, personally I think it'd be better if he were able to comment on not only the released picture, but also the edited scenes, so it'd probably be better if the Fox people got him to do commentary on the original cut (which I'm sure they must have a copy of in their vaults.)

And, old or not, I have to go along with what Jeff stated... I too sensed some bitterness in the "Behind" documentary when J.Lee spoke of "Conquest," so maybe you would not find his "Conquest" commentary to be "boring." I think he could possibly have a few interesting things to say on the film, so don't let his age rule that out.

I don't know, maybe "Behind the..." sold well on video. It sounds definite they are going to at least do a 5-star edition of the original, which would suggest new stuff (such as cut scenes), so why not premiere that stuff on AMC? Those 5-stars are pretty elaborate. And it sounds like Fox wants to at least release the others anamorphic (the "Evolution" set was the last one before Fox instituted it's anamorphic policy). Overall, it seems like the originals sold well on DVD, maybe "Behind" and the TV show did, helped by the publicity of POTA2001, so why not more "Apes"? - - - Jeff

(releasing the Medicoms, anniversary stuff on AMC, new doc?) to woo back the
fans again. Of course, I keep assuming they have common sense.

Well, previewing the stuff on AMC helps promote the sale of the videos.  The same month that SPEED comes out in a 5 Star Edition, it's on AMC with a Backstory episode.  Hey, maybe that's what they're doing with Classic APES, making new Backstory shows about them.

Well, maybe you (and Eric Greene?) should try to muster up the courage and do it.  Hell, a cheap cassette recorder and one of those portable DVD players (I have one and could send it to you!) and you could do the interview right there in his kitchen!  You guys would know the questions to ask him a hell of a lot better than the boobs at Fox or Kevin Burns.  Look at that McDowall interview!  I'm glad we have it, but it was really a missed opportunity in a lot of ways.

alas, his condition grew steadily worse and worse. I'm so glad he had
the fortitude to tape his message to us (his fans, audience and
critics). His quoting of Prospero's (i.e. "Shakespeare's") last speech
from "The Tempest" was so apropos, given his chosen profession as an
actor. And what an actor! Can any of us imagine ANYBODY from the late-
1960's Hollywood portraying Taylor anywhere near as well? Many great
actors could have done a fine job (such as Kirk Douglas, perhaps?),
but Chuck gave what I consider his greatest performance in the role.
As Gregory Peck said (in A&E's Biography episode on Heston), "Who else
could play those roles?"--referring to the epic roles of Moses, El
Cid, Judah Ben-Hur, etc. Answer: NOBODY... at least as well as him.

As heart-rending as Chuck's current plight is, it's probably far worse
for his family--just as Ronald Reagan's family have to have been
having a difficult time, ever since his Alzheimer's set in.
Some here may not agree with some (or much or any) of Chuck's
political views (and that's okay), but let it never be said that Chuck
ever championed a cause he didn't really believe in. He marched with
Dr. King... he opposed McCarthyism (despite his aversion to Communism,
which McCarthy was trying to combat in his own twisted way)... and he
championed the inalienable right of the people to "keep and bear
arms", even when it was most unpopular to do so... and--even though he
denied that it was so--it probably cost him professionally to do it.

Chuck acquired the nickname "Charlie Hero" on the set of PLANET, when
he used his clout to get a helicopter to bring the makeup-imprisoned
actors to the hot location shoots. With him, it was always the WORK.
He wasn't a prima donna. As an actor he once (so he said) asked DeNiro
why he hadn't done any Shakespeare on stage, unintentionally
irritating him in the process. Only an actor would ask a great actor
like DeNiro such a question! The WORDS on the script... Heston was so
damned great at delivering those words--especially when it was
Shakespeare (and thank heaven that Kenneth Branaugh cast him as the
Actor in his film version of "HAMLET"!), which Heston performed so
                well at.
If it weren't for his willingness to commit to Arthur P. Jacobs' mad
idea for a movie (about "a planet where apes evolved from men?"), then
we wouldn't be yakking on this site, folks... It was Chuck's interest
in the material that got it to Zanuck and, eventually, to the screen.
For that--as well as everything else--I will always be grateful, and I
hope his last years are peaceful and happy--for him and his family.

Since we're discussing "complete" movies, I think last week we were
talking about "Star Wars" and how the original versions will never be on DVD
(maybe). In the "Unofficial" 'Star Wars' book it says that the 1993 THX
remastered release of the original film on VHS AND laserdisc omitted C-3PO's
line: "The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in 7 locations. A
power loss at one of the terminals will allow (the Millenium Falcon) to
leave". This dialogue was in the theatrical release and the
(non-letterboxed) early videos but not the '93 release. It was put back in
for the "Special Editions". Thus, there is not a "complete" letterboxed
edition of the original flick in existence and probably never will be.

These were commissioned by AMC and were made by a costume company that specializes in making character costumes ( like those used in malls and theme parks). When I was at Fox we were sent a couple to borrow for media and publicity. The uniforms weren't too bad, but the heads were goofy and comical and sat on your head like a helmet. I guess they were made for quick changing convenience. The general public ( god bless 'em ) didn't seem to care. We also had a Zira and Cornelius set made by Apemania which ( as you can imagine ) were spot on for detail and had much more effective pull over masks. I offered to buy them from Fox for my collection when we were finished with them and after much deliberation, they declined sighting they may be reused in the future.I then heard ( from Brian..remember him?) that some of their costumes showed up at auction for unclaimed customs items. Go figure.

I'm going to ask this of you Jeff (or anyone else in here with legit Apes contacts...) Do you think that perhaps Natalie Trundy or Bill Blake may have first hand knowledge of the existence of deleted/unused footage? If so, could you ask them for us?

This question goes out to you as well Rory... Do you think that Russo may have run across anything in his book research saying the unused footage still exists? Did he see any of it? Did he ever mention Ted Post saying there were unused shots still around?

Natalie or Bill wouldn't know. J. Lee might (he'd probably say, "As a matter of fact, I just received a copy. A young man named Sotis had it. It's just like I remember it!"). Maybe Jacobs kept a copy, which would be at Loyola Maramount . Most likely Fox would have it somewhere, if they didn't destroy it and use it for guitar picks. Ken Taylor would probably know, since he used to work for Fox. I'll ask him the next time I see him. In his recent "posting"  (which I forwarded to the group) Whitty had this to ask of  Jeff:

Jeff, you know Eric Greene (spelling?) don't you?  If so, invite him to hop on and chat with us.  He might be able to tell us where the photo of the deleted scene came from and he may even know if a lot of the deleted/unused stuff we desire EXISTS (a good place to start).

I suppose I should have been a little clearer in my letter... I wasn't referring to just "lost" footage from Conquest, but all of the Apes movies. I guess I should have said "Jeff, in addition to the dead (runaway) ape footage from the deleted beginning of Conquest, do you think any of your Apes contacts know of any other cut footage? If so, do you think they have any idea if it exists?"

I know about as much as you guys. probably even less. We only ever released what was made available from the U.S home office. When I heard their plans to release the 5 movies on DVD, I immediately alerted them to the existence of the Japanese laser disc Battle cut and suggested they include it in the release. I think as they didn't want to pay for another THX remastering transfer ( to keep the set consistent with THX ), they went with what they already had available.

At least someone at Fox actually tried to get this released... It didn't do any good (for Australia or the US for that matter) but at least ya did mention it to them...

Nah, I wish I had but I think I answered that in my last post. If I had been privy to any cool unseen stuff, I certainly would have shared it with the group before now. Even when we were putting together the TV series VHS box sets, I requested ANY additional extras like network promos or the legendary 'aged Galen' intros for the re-edited TV movies but alas, no-one was able to assist. I don't know if it was too hard or if they really didn't have anything ( Kevin Burns' office told me they couldn't find anything much on the series for the Behind Doco) or it just wasn't a priority. At the time Australia had initiated the TV series release on video, so it wasn't like a company wide objective.

Believe it or not, pretty much no one knows.  This stuff is the property of the studio and it goes into the vaults and later some of it can found, and some of it can't.  One of the big reasons things can't be found, and we're talking about canisters of film here, is because it has been properly catalogued or not catalogued at all.  That means someone has to hunt for it.  That costs money.  There has to be money to be made for the studios to spend money looking for lost footage, footage that most likely when found will need further money to restore.  So, things stay lost.  Most of 20th Century Fox's negatives and prints are down in a salt mine in Kansas, I believe.  If you want to know where the movie PLANET OF THE APES really lives, that's where it lives -- Beneath Kansas.

I think it's the TV show too.  The appliances don't look like the first film, and in ESCAPE and BATTLE he had a pretty good flip of hair in the back.

Anyone ever see a better reproduction of this photo?  I can't tell if it's behind the scenes of PLANET, ESCAPE, or the TV show.  I don't think it's from ESCAPE.  Probably not PLANET.  I'd guess the TV show, but that's just a guess.

Whatever Fox releases in Japan comes from the U.S. too.  I think the reason the longer version of BATTLE wasn't released on the DVD boxed set was because it's being saved for a re-release so we have to buy it all over again.  There's also the fact that the footage involving the bomb in the longer version of BATTLE has recording problems with the dialogue.  Why it wasn't looped later on, I don't know except to say that they didn't have the money or time.

Maybe they knew they were coming out with the TV show and "Behind..." 6 months later and they didn't want to overwhelm us. Fox is coming out with a 2 disc "X-Men" special edition next year, so in 2000 I don't think their DVDs were up to snuff yet. I KNOW the head of their video division said POTA would be their last non-anamorphic release. - - - Jeff
