Maybe because the DVD was authored from a 35mil print and the previous VHS releases were taken from a 16mm print and for some reason they're different (sounds like a cue for Phyllis Diller ....or Mama Cass in the Pufnstuff movie, but that's a whole new OT subject!)

One of my favourite kid movies. Just got it on DVD.

You probably didn't notice, but at the very end of the movie Francesca's voice is supposed to say "Yeeeeah!"    It's on the CD and the trailer on the DVD, and the new VHS (So I've read on the net.), but on the DVD it's cut off.  What's up with that?

No, you don't understand, the NEW Anchor Bay VHS that was released along with the DVD has the "Yeeeeeah!" on it, but the DVD don't.  It was a screw up.

Well, hey, let's make it topical. What is "authoring"? It just so happens that at the 5th annual DVD awards on Aug. 21, POTA2001 is up for Best Authoring. Is that the elements used to create the DVD? I know the elements used to create the original POTA DVDs is called Arthuring. The competion in the Best Authoring catagory are "John Q", "Shrek", "Snow White" and "Episode One". Other catagories are Best of Show, Best Special Edition, Best Standard Release, Best Educational/Documentary, Best Music DVD,Best restoration, Best Audio/Non Video, Best DVD-Rom Support, Viewer's Choice, Best Video Presentation, Best Audio Presentation, Best Packaging and Best Menu Design. POTA isn't up for any of the others. "Star Wars:Ep. One"(5), "Snow White"(4),and  "Pearl Harbor"(6) got the most noms. Still, over a year later POTA2001 is still getting nominations. And you guys said it sucked! ETc.                - - - Jeff

Here's the poster from the Poseidon Adventure which came out 6 months prior to Battle. You can see its done in the same style.

Authoring is the process in creating the initial DVD master that all others will be replicated from. Not sure what the technical term is but I'm sure there's a 'DVD for Dummies' site someplace with all the jargon.

You probably didn't notice, but at the very end of the movie Francesca's voice is supposed to say "Yeeeeah!"    It's on the CD and the trailer on the DVD, and the new VHS (So I've read on the net.), but on the DVD it's cut off.  What's up with that?

Just want to point out that the Battle poster was done in the style of all Fox posters at the time with a cheesy painting over a line of headshots of the cast.

ETc.                - - - Jeff

Maybe because the DVD was authored from a 35mil print and the previous VHS releases were taken from a 16mm print and for some reason they're different (sounds like a cue for Phyllis Diller ....or Mama Cass in the Pufnstuff movie, but that's a whole new OT subject!)

              Oh,
I see what you mean. I had a few minutes to spare so I compared the DVD ( which I haven't watched all the way through yet..hence my mis-quote ) to the Deluxo/Black Bear Press VHS release from a couple of years ago. Seems like they cut the very end of the movie off when doing the DVD. Weird. A shame as the quality of the DVD is glorious compared to the VHS print released in 1999. It looks like it could have been made yesterday ( by school students ..as the pacing is kind of clunky as well as the animation). One of my other favourite movie when I was a kid was 'The Man Called Flintstone'. It was the first movie I ever saw at the cinema and to see the Flintsones in full color blew me away ( here in Australia, we didn't get color TV until around 1974 ).
One of my other favourites was Planet of the Apes ( just wanted to get back on topic).
              Did I mention that I hated MIB2?
              Ooops, off topic again.

I believe authoring has to do with the digital compression that goes on when a film is transferred to DVD.  They have to compress the film to fit it onto the disc and so frames from the movie have to go.  You actually don't get every frame of the movie on DVD as you do on video cassette and did on laserdisc.  I think that out of every 24 frames per second from the actual film only 12 or maybe less get put on the DVD.  Someone actually has to decide which frames go and which stay.  How do they fool your eyes?  Several of those remaining frames are repeated so that the movie plays as normal.  This is all needed so they can fit the movie onto one disc and still have room for the menus and all the extras.  Anyway, that's how I understand it and that's the best I can do to explain it.

Oh, so that's why they found POTA2001 award-worthy. Because someone's giving them less of the film. They figure the less, the better. So how come the guy who cut out Jar Jar isn't nominated? - - Jeff

You're right about frames being removed.  But it's not like they get half the frames from every second.  The machine that does it senses movement within the frame.  So it'll get more from a slow static scene than an action scene.  It's a frame here, a frame there process, but it does ad up over time.  Enough to sell an extra 30 second spot every half hour.  But you know what they say . . . Yeah, it is something like that.  I also think that the frames that get repeated during playback aren't actually on the disc, there's a code that tells your player to repeat the frame then move on to the next one.  I think that's right.

I believe it can be done either way.  For compression or expansion.  You can either remove the static frames or repeat them, almost like a digital stutter or hiccough.  That's how they fit film, which is 24 f/sec. into a video format which runs at 30 f/sec.

How's this for an odd throwback. Along with the November 12 release of the full, beautiful widescreen DVD of STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES comes a boxed set of EPISODE II and STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE.

                  No surprise, right?

Well, for this DVD release the details are sketchy (available for order at BestBuy.com now) but it is in the full glory… of pan-and-scan, full screen picture. That's right… all the glory of a cropped VHS like-picture in glittering DVD clarity.

We thought five to ten of you VHS nostalgics might like to know.

.htmlI was just watching my VHS copy of OUR MAN FLINT I taped letterboxed off AMC, anyway Robert Gunner appears exactly a half hour into the movie.  He's first seen grabbing the legs of a dancer on the stage of this dive club.  His character is called "Triple 08" and there's one quick shot of him punching Flint in the face where he looks just like Connery.

Also in your book, on page 47, that makeup and costume test picture.  See that guy as the orangutan?  I think he's the same one as on Topps card #33, and I think he was also the model for the face of the Lawgiver statue.

                    .html
.htmlOkay, here's some stuff about DVDs I found on the web.  Not too technical.

                    Picture Compression

Picture Compression on the DVD disc is made possible by a process known as MPEG. DVDs use the the second version of this compression process know as MPEG2.

MPEG video compression is quite popular in the computer world as a means of storing video without the burden of taking up vast amounts of space, thus it has been around long enough to have the bugs worked out. It was developed by those whom it is named after, the Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG for short), a group founded to do what it has done, develop quality video compression.

How MPEG works is this; video that you watch is generally shot with 20-30 frames per second, which means a lot of frames in a two hour movie. If you were to go through the movie frame by frame, you would find that many elements in the picture, such as the background, do not change from frame to frame. MPEG takes advantage of this; remembering the last frame, and only storing the information that is different from the previous frame. What this means is a lot of compression can be done on still shots, while the compression is limited on fast moving action shots.

Compression of the video is measured in bit rates, and generally ranges from 3-10 megabits per second, the higher being for the more detailed fast moving shots. Although this compression rate can be slightly adjusted when necessary, such as turning it slightly up to allow for more video on the disk, or down to get maximum picture quality. Bit rate however does not determine by itself the quality of the image, most movies only use about a 4 bit rate, but when the disk is well mastered, it can look just as good as if using a 10 bit rate.

                    Picture Quality

What gives DVD the edge on having the best picture quality possible for the home video comsumer comes from several different plusses all added together.

First of all, the video is stored on the disc in the Component Video method versus the Composite Video method which is how Video Tapes and Laser Discs are recorded. What this means is more picture information is being stored, as the the picture information is split up for the red, green and blue, and not together like composite. This gives the picture a bigger dynamic range, allowing for blacker blacks and whiter whites and beautifully brilliant colours.

Second is the fact that the information is stored digitally instead of in an analog format, like Video Tapes and Laser Discs. With Digital Information everything is stored very precisely, which allows for perfect pausing and slo-motion playback. This however is not the case when the DVD is a copy of an analog source. When this is done, as can be seen with some of the lower end titles, the analog flaw as copied to the disc with the video, resulting in the disc unable be perfectly paused and appearing to have two overlapping images, this is known as interlaced video, and is common to analog recordings. A properly mastered disc would be non-interlaced allowing for perfect pausing and slo-motion playback. (You may notice some of the DVD NOW reviews referring to the disc's mastering as being off sync, interlaced video is what it is being referring to.)

Third is the Line Screen. An average television has a line screen of 240 lines high, and 320 lines wide. This is the resolution at which standard video cassettes are recorded at. DVDs however are recorded at twice the resolution, resulting in super sharp images that will quickly make your old video collection seem quite obsolete. On top of this, Widescreen DVDs can be recorded using the Anamorphic technique. What this involves is recording the image as a stretched full frame 480 line image, and then simply compressing the image to the correct proportions when it is viewed. This results in an even sharper image that is not to be found anywhere else in the home theatre market.

                    Widescreen

Widescreen, although not as popular a TV format of watching movies in America as it is in Europe, it seems to be becoming more popular day by day. Pleasing to all, the majority of DVD discs include both Widescreen as well as Full Frame Pan & Scan formats of the movie.

Widescreen movies, even though they appear the same shape in the end, can be stored on a DVD disc in two different ways.

Letterbox is the basic way to store a widescreen format of a movie on a DVD disc. It simply involves shrinking the movie to fit on the screen with black bars on top & bottom saved as a full frame image. When displayed on a 1.78 Widescreen TV, the picture is enlarged to proper width and the black bars top & bottom dissapear off the top & bottom of the screen.

Anamorphic is the better way to store a widescreen movie on a DVD disc. In this format the movie is stored at full frame with no black bars, and the player resizes the image to fit on your desired screen size. The format results in beautifully sharp images better than ever seen before on home video.

                      Hey everyone.
Here's the status on my DVDs. A few days ago, my system crashed and burned,
and all captured media for my DVDs went with it. So the only thing I could
do is to send everyone my Battle UNcut DVD along with my Music CD. This will
take place in a few weeks, but regardless everyone who asked will receive.
It'll just be my Battle DVD and my music DVD instead of what was requested.

Now that I've put my system back together, I'm not going to get into that
venture again, especially with making DVDs anymore. It's a pain in the ass,
and in the end my system went to shit.

So be expecting my Battle DVD along with my Music CD in the coming weeks.

                      Best and sorry, I tried.

                      P.S.
Now that the system is back and running again, I'm now just devoting my
system to my new site at: www.skynetsite.com I spent an entire weekend
putting this computer back together, and I'm not going through that hell
                      again.

I guess it serves me right.

My biggest problem was that I had both Windows XP and Windows 98 on the same
hard drive. I divided the hard drive into two, drive C: and D: with each
containing a windows version. Simply because while my video capturer was
only Windows 98 compliant, my internet access was better used on XP Windows.
So it was just a matter of time before both collapsed on each other.

I now have both installed again, but this time I'm not pushing my luck. So
this computer will only be used for internet and web site. And burning
mutable Battle DVDs for you guys. But making anymore DVDs? I'm leaving that
aside for now. I don't want to push the envelope again. At least not for
now, this weekend was just a freaken nightmare for me.

                      Best.

It's a nightmare, especially when your dealing with two window versions. I
has to reinstall everything three times, including all programs, because it

I've seen two types of DVD recorders for the computer advertised.  In this area, the top of the line DVD writer costs around $699 before tax.  There's also something that runs $349 which is intended to copy VHS to DVD.  Anyone have one of these or more info about it?  If it can copy VHS to DVD, it would surely be able to copy DVD to DVD, wouldn't it?

My guess would be no it wouldn't be able to copy dvd to dvd... Right now, I'd be happy with just one that can copy VHS to dvd... Anyone on the list got the capability to do tranfers like that (other than Alex that is)??

There are inexpensive programs available(under $100) that allow you to copy dvd to dvd using only the computer's cd burner.

In fact, I've been thinking. . . remember when Patrick told us that the little boy ape in PLANET is named Quentin, and not the Quintus we've all heard for the past few decades? Maybe he's right. [c.] And remember when he wrote that because John Huston as the Lawgiver in BATTLE doesn't look anything like the Lawgiver statue in PLANET that they can't be the same Lawgiver? [d.] Well, I think maybe we should now start to take Patrick seriously and treat him with more respect and, in deference to Patrick's amazing mind, I'm beginning to believe that the Monster in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN has to be a different one than in the first FRANKENSTEIN, they don't look alike at all [e.], and that therefore there must be more than one James Bond and Charlie Chan, not to mention Jack Ryan and Tarzan (Oops, I just did.), and I ask you how can the egg possibly come from the chicken? And what about the man from the ape!! Think about it. Now, I feel I must let Patrick alone and allow him the peace he needs so that, I'm sure, on this day off from whatever he does for a living, he can give himself a much needed and refreshing enema. . . . IN ORDER TO CLEAR HIS MIND!!!!!

                      > Thank you,
                      > Rory

*** With fiends like Rory, who needs enemas?

[a.] The ESCAPE museum curator... well, at least he knew what he was
talking about. Even Hasslein was riveted so much by his presentation
that he didn't notice right away that a talking chimpanzee (!) had
wandered away from the group and fainted.

[b.] Rory admits he made a mistake! Jesus H. Christ in a handbasket!
Will wonders never cease? I've never claimed to be perfect, and I
certainly don't expect perfection from Rory (or anybody else) here, so
I'm not one to brow-beat him for a minor little f*ck-up. Buy why, pray
tell, am I not afforded the same courtesy? It seems that all I have to
do is frickin' BREATHE and Rory goes out of his way to fire off an
                      insult. It's a good thing I don't have a taste for "free-range rude,"
like Hannibal Lecter. There's more than enough of it to go around
                      here.

[c.] Quintus vs. Quentin. Evidently, I'm not the only one who thinks
the name is "Quentin": whoever is responsible for the subtitling on
the DVD has Momma Chimp saying, "Come on, Quentin." Mind you, the
subtitlers of these APES DVDs aren't always 100% correct (the "Aldo"
chimp beaten up by the police in CONQUEST is given the name "Otto" by
the subtitler, for instance), and so I for one wouldn't consider the
name "Quentin" to be 'canon'. If it sounds like "Quintus" to others,
then FINE. I don't give a rodent's gluteus one way or the other. To
ME, it sounds like "Quentin"--and rest assured that I wasn't the one
hired to do the subtitling on the PLANET DVD, so at least ONE other
person hears the name the same way I do.

[d.] I never said that the difference in the "look" of the Huston
"Lawgiver" and the Lawgiver statue meant that they "can't" be the
same. It was on purely chronological grounds that I concluded that
                      (i.e. 2670 A.D. [BATTLE] vs. c. 3955/3978 minus 1,200 years [PLANET],
or c. 2755/2778 A.D.: about a century later). What I DID say was that
I wondered why the make-up guys who did up John Huston--who COULD have
made him look like the Statue from PLANET/BENEATH, yet DID'NT--did not
try to match the look, IF, that is (as "non-circular timeline"
proponents claim) this is supposed to be the same guy, albeit in a
"changed lane" of Time. I brought up relevant religious iconography
(the Sphinx vs. Khephren's statue, depictions of Jesus' face in
relation to the Turin shroud, etc.) because a statuary depiction of
"the greatest ape of all" would not be done lightly, given that the
ape culture is religiously authoritarian. Rory & James don't seem to
give a shit about my speculations regarding this (and I'm not saying
they SHOULD, mind you), in spite of my courteous suggestion that
                      James--who I know has the capability--do something I'm not
technologically equipped to do: post side-by-side pics of the Lawgiver
Statue and John Huston IN HIS APE MAKE-UP on this site. I asked him
nicely, but he had to be a prick about it and posted a pic of John
Huston sans make-up, in a piss-poor attempt at humor (at my expense,
of course). I'm not the one here who needs an enema.

[e.] A different actor may have played Frankenstein's monster, but
they used the same "flat-head/bolts-in-the-neck" make-up, didn't they?
Remember when David Watson played Cornelius in BENEATH? He mentioned
in an interview (I think it was in APESFAN #2) that some people didn't
even notice that it wasn't Roddy playing the part, since David's voice
and mannerisms--AND THE MAKE-UPS--helped him to portray the same
                      character.

You're as welcome, Rory, as an ass-rash,

                      Patrick

[c.] And remember when he wrote that because John Huston as the Lawgiver in

from the chicken? And what about the man from the ape!! Think about it.
Now, I feel I must let Patrick alone and allow him the peace he needs so
that, I'm sure, on this day off from whatever he does for a living, he can

in an interview (I think it was in APESFAN #2) that some people didn't
even notice that it wasn't Roddy playing the part, since David's voice
and mannerisms--AND THE MAKE-UPS--helped him to portray the same
                      character.

Even as a very little kid I knew that Watson wasn't Roddy... His voice was different enough to be noticeable, his mannerisms were exaggerated (to me anyway) and he was TALLER than Roddy was next to Kim... I was very surprised to see that there were some who didn't know it wasn't Roddy...

*** Hi, Jeff. Great question and, since you asked, here's my theory on
                      how it might work.
In Isaac Asimov's novel "NEMESIS", the first journey via hyperdrive is
to an unseen star nearer to Sol than Alpha Centauri (a dwarf star
hidden behind an interstellar dust cloud); the ship has on board a
device which is able to detect the radiation-emission signatures of
cognitive lifeforms, which facilitates their attempt to find WHERE in
that alien system thinking lifeforms might be; that way, they won't
have to bother with investigating barren worlds, etc.
Perhaps the Authenticator works on a similar principle: it absorbs the
brainwave patterns of the guy in the chair, and a computer program
studies those brainwave patterns in order to detect the "signature" of
either Sincerity or Falsehood (or Fear, or Exhilaration, etc.). When
an interviewee attempts to tell a lie, his/her brainwaves give him/her
away, and the machine exerts some sort of bio-feedback, projecting a
waveform back into the person's mind, using that imposed waveform to
create a 'Sincerity' brainwave in the subject. As Kolp says, it "makes
people tell the truth". Perhaps infrasonic waves are projected into
the subject's skull, pin-pointing the part of the brain where "the
Will to Lie" is at and upsetting it with unsettling vibrations. I'm
reminded of something I read in a book about Nicola Tesla: when his
friend Samuel Clemens visited his Manhattan workshop, he sat down on a
chair that was designed to pulse with therapeutic vibrations. After a
minute or so, Sam had to use the bathroom like never before
(evidently, the vibrations--absorbed into his buttocks--served as a
most effective cure for constipation). When the Authenticator's
cylinder descends from the ceiling, perhaps it creates the necessary
vibrations into the subject's brain to force him/her to want to tell
the truth, by preparing a "way out" (via "truth-telling") from the
                      unsettling vibes.
Evidently, what the Authenticator does electronically, the "Fat Man"
in BENEATH is able to do telepathically. When Brent tries to tell a
lie, Victor Buono pounces on him: "You're lying!" How does he know?
Evidently, the Mutants not only can read minds, but they can detect an
attempt to convey false information; maybe a lie "tastes" sour in
their minds, and the Truth "tastes" pleasant, to put it
                      metaphorically.
Perhaps periodic exposure to the Authenticator was what instigated the
emergent telepathy of the Mutants in the first place. Maybe the
vibratory intrusions of the Authenticator exercised parts of the brain
that would have remained latent indefinitely... but, when exercised,
resulted in the emergence of a new mode of sense perception.
Just a few speculations, Jeff... what do you think? Not necessarily
about my speculations; what are your theories? I, for one, would like
                      to know.

                      Patrick

P.S. Remember the Resonator in "From Beyond" (a great B-flick, by the
guys who made "The Re-Animator")? It worked by using a tuning fork to
stimulate the pineal gland, with most interesting effects...

That's one of my favorite B movies ever! Actually I'm a big fan of any movie with that actor in it. (Jeffrey Combs) He's one of the best B movie actors out there. Up there with Bruce Cambell. I'm also a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft and his works. (Some of the movies this guy was in was based on his work.) And before anyone here says it, yes I know I have bad taste in movies. This may explain why I liked POTA 2001 so much. ;o)

In case anyone is interested, info on this actor, and the movies he's been in, is available here:

P.S. As for how the Authenticator works, my guess would be that it prevents the brain from using its creative functions. By projecting some sort of electro magnetic field that blocks that part of the brain, the person that is subjected to this field can't think up a lie and the truth is all that comes out. How the device could force the person to speak, hmmm, could be that while it prevents you from telling a lie, at the same time, it stimulates the brains speech center to force the truth out of you. But who's to say really. I'm just talkin out my ass here...

Well, I'm not Jeff, but this is what I think. . . I think that was a pretty good explanation as to how an authenticator might work, Patty ol' boy, ol' pal, ol' bean.  I have often thought that that device in CONQUEST was a bit of a cheat in the film, just a lazy means by which Dehn got Armando to get upset enough to put up a fight to get out of the room and hence fall from the window.  Other than that I'd have to say that I've truly never given the authenticator much thought at all.

I also think Nicola Tesla's chair might work better than an enema.

Non-circular does not necessarily mean mutants won't eventuate....actually,
many events may pan out in exactly the same way, but some should differ.

Speaking of fun ideas.....I saw "Signs" last night and thoroughly enjoyed
it! Good to have an old-fashioned alien invasion movie back on the scene!
I'm still a bit concerned that the aliens didn't even bother to pack a steak
knife, but I guess they were just arrogant....

I always thought it was some kind of psycho-electric device that
suppresses the area of the brain that allows you to lie. Either that
or the light is so bright and hot that it melts the glue on your
                      toupee.

Hi Steve, welcome to the group.
You mention that you collect GI Joes, do you collect Megos? I've just
uncovered my collection while digging around in storage and have
consequently 'gotten into them' again. I've had some of them since I was a
kid. Even Mr Whitty contributed to my collection. I know this is off topic,
but anyone else on this group into Mego's..other than the POTA ones ( which
seem to be the most commonly available)?
                      KEN

I have about 500 Mego figures, plus playsets, vehicles, etc. My
collection started with my desire to replace my childhood apes.

Are you familiar with the Mego Museum?

Mego's suck!   Now the vintage G.I. Joes -- there was a boy's doll for you!  And the figures from Marx -- those were the coolest!  Anybody ever have the Noble Knights, with their snap-on armor and horses?  Ah, the Sixties, when toys were toys, and boys were boys, and we'd steal my sister's Baby Thumbelina and throw it down the stairs to watch as it wreathed in pain.  Oh, the good old days!

And yes I have seen the Mego web site it is very informative. I too
started to collect Joe's and Ape stuff so that I could re-kindle my

don't know why because my Mom knew I loved the movies and the T.V.
show(s). So the Mego's are new to me, I want to get more of them, I
see lots of them on eBay but is that the best source for them ?

(Oh yeah, they can't talk, not yet anyway.)  What are your favorite genre movies?  Besides APES, I also like the classic Universal monster movies, and SF films like WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FORBIDDEN PLANET on up to 2001, but you can really keep that STAR WARS stuff.  Don't know what it is people see in BLADE RUNNER.  I liked the remake of THE THING, but not THE FLY.  ALIEN and ALIENS were good, but the other two, forget it.  What posters you got?  POTA 2001 was really bad, in fact in SUCKED BIG TIME!

Finally, do you collect DVDs?  If not -- what are you waiting for?

Have you heard Nick Cage is selling his comic collection?

(Any discussion of anything other than POTA is to be preceded by (OT) [for Off Topic] otherwise there are some in this group who have hissy fits.  I could care less.  Also, if you can put pictures in your posts, like this. . . .

                        please do.

I'm not sure, but I was wondering if you were interested in APES first or the Megos got you into APES?

OK - I know they explained in the movie why the Aliens did not just
zap humans FROM THE SKY (ie ould have led to nuclear attack/rendering
                        the planet as useless).

But why didn't the aliens have rifles...or knives...or SOMETHING for
                        hand to hand combat?

Why did they have no weapons at all? Are we to assume that they were
so arrogant that they believed all they would need is their gas/spike
                        to defeat the earth?

I'm sure there will be a sequel.

Like "Planet", there are many interesting, unanswered questions.
Hope they do it right if they choose to do a sequel (unlike
                        many "Planet" sequels).

.htmlHey, I just found this site.  Never knew of it before.  Anybody else here got some of these or a complete set?  (The info is wrong, though, the set was actually issued in April 1968.

With the July 27th unleashing of 20th Century Fox's all new Planet Of The Apes Movie, Topps is proud to announce that our all new Planet Of The Apes Card Set will be in stores by mid July. Our May Flashback Page takes a simultaneous look back at our 1969 Planet Of The Apes Card Set while also looking forward to our new Planet Of The Apes Card Set.

Our 44-card Planet Of The Apes Card Set, issued in 1969, was based on the classic 1968 movie. In a Darwinian role reversal, Astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) lands on a planet where Apes are the ruling class, and humans are the harshly-treated, lower primates. Taylor befriends Nova (Linda Harrison) and is aided by Ape Doctors Zira and Cornelius to escape to "The Forbidden Zone".

I don't collect Megos (except the Apes) but I'm knowledgable about them
because I'm fascinated by all the licenses they had back then. I've got a
couple books on the subject. The Kubricks are kinda becoming the Megos of
today, with a s**itload of licenses, including "Star Wars" and Marvel comics
(out this year). Like Mego, they made their big splash with "Apes". - - Jeff

No man, this is the first I'm hearing of it.  Damn!  Another one gone.  I was just watching him today in a Randolph Scott Western on AMC.
You others here into the Universal Monsters might be interested to know that one of the connections between the POTA series and the FRANKENSTEIN series is that Jeff Corey is the Crypt Keeper in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN.  He has the line, with a fake Cockney accent, "The door, it's broken from inside."

Well, that's too bad.  He was one of the great character actors.  He was blacklisted in the Fifties.  Who was it told me that Natalie Trundy said he had B.O.?

soon to be 37 years old so I am from the age of the Apes ! I have been
in love with POTA since I first saw that crash landing and corn field
in or around 1973. I'm also a big fan of other Horror / Sci-Fi /
Monster & Fantasy films. I collect comics and Monster magazines and
have around 15 to 20,000 !  I have some ape stuff, mostly comics, mags
,books posters and action figures. ( I want LOTS more ! ) I also have
a very nice collection of vintage 60's & 70's GI Joe's. I have TONS of
price and collector guides on old comics, toys, Magazines, GI Joe's,
coins, cards, military and movies. So if any of you guys need some
info just ask and I will try to help !

                                         That's it for now-regards : comicguy !

Hi Steve, welcome to the group.  You sound like just the right kind of guy for this group of Peter Pans.  What does your wife think of your collection?  What about the cats?

Also, if you can put pictures in your posts, like this. . . .

                            please do.

That's good.  There's a mint set on eBay right now.  The bidding is already over $100, but it is as you say worth it if you don't have a set.  Back in '68 the Topps cards, the LP, and the Tie-in paperback was all there was to collect on APES, unless you knew how to get movie posters and such.

Hey, this is pretty interesting.  I told you guys there's something wrong with the surround mix of the soundtrack on the PLANET DVD.  Now this actually pisses me off.  When Fox goes 5 Star Edition with APES they better bloody well remix the sound, God damn them all to hell!    Read below. . . .

This title has been reviewed 3 times by now and again we have no definitive version - but at least this time one can safely say that we are very close to it.

The 16x9 enhanced transfer is just about even with the quality with the Region 1 DVD which had not received that enhancement. But, in comparing the two I have to say that both images are excellent in resolution with the Region 1 slightly better in color as the Region 2 PAL disc has been reduced in chroma level by about 10% - why is beyond me.The too aggressively used aperture on the Region 1 NTSC master has been avoided on the PAL master which gives the picture a more steady image. Edges around objects or characters are naturally displayed. As a result the two DVD's are about equal in video quality.

The sound is another story entirely and make the R2 disc the winner: The soundtrack used on this disc is for the first time the correct mix encoded in 5.1 DD. This mix is also featured as a PCM version (non-discrete stereo surround) on the remastered US Laserdisc. Now, that LD also featured a 5.1 mix of this film and it was that mix that was used for the US Region 1 DVD. However, that mix is entirely different in quality - to make it short it has been screwed up, taking all the resolution, detail and dynamic away as well as being mixed flatly wrong. The EUROPEAN editon is, fortunatly, equipped with the correct soundtrack that is far richer in detail, having also a wide spacial field in the front for the music of Jerry Goldsmith - in the right mix. The sound is by no means perfect - but it is a defintely a better one and makes this picture the experience it is intended to be.

.htmlJust for the record. . .

, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is 10 Minutes longer that the U.S. version. Following is a detailed list of what is missing:
8'03 : the score continues to its original ending for 25 seconds with extra footage of General Aldo approaching on a horse.
13'37 : the chase of the teacher of the apes is longer by 20 seconds
26'57: the mutant chief is walking around in his HQ and has more dialogue (30sec)
29'38: the entry into the forbidden city of the ape scout party with Caesar is 40 sec longer with more dialogue
34'32 : the escape from the forbidden city shows more footage and dialogue of the apes
42'06 : the scene were Cornelius is "shot" by a human boy is beginning earlier, making it clear that the shooting is a game - which makes more sense since no mutant party had yet approached the ape city (15 sec)
46'47 : DELETED SCENE : in this edited scene, the mutant chief tells his lieutenant, to fire an atomic missile on ape city when he give the signal. This adds to the tention and it is odd that this element was left out. (1'16sec)
56'43 : the assault by the mutants is shown 45sec longer (in this sequence there are three more "smaller cuts" that reduce the battle scene by 40 additional sec) AND THERE IS NO MUSICAL SCORE
1'02'18: the scene where the mutant chief calls "Sergeant York" is missing (1 min)
1'07'57: again, parts of the assault are cut by almost 40sec
1'08'50: there are additional shots and dialogue before the mutants lay the smoke screen
1'09'29: again, 15sec of the battle were cut
1'10'00: more battle footage cut (20sec)
1'16'00: the scene were Aldo kills the mutant chief and his followers in the school bus was cut in the U.S. version
1'22'10: the fight between Aldo and Caesar is longer
1'24'00: DELETED SCENE: the scene where the advisor talks the mutant lieutenant out of firing the atomic missile was cut (only with this sequence reinserted the odd cut from the Caesar conversation with the humans to the ending sequence makes a little more sense and looks better)

The sound is another matter. While most of the soundtracks are more consistent than the Japanese counterparts on Laserdisc, the dynamic and the resolution of them is not actually better. In some cases the music and effects are mere shadows of what the original mix must have been. The best comparison can be made between the excellent PCM on the remastered U.S. Laserdisc of PLANET OF THE APES and the DVD mixes (that goes for the 5.1 DD as well as the 2.0 DS - as well as the LD DD 5.1 mixes). The PCM of the laser is far more impressive in frequency range and wider in stage presence and accurate in reflection in the front that the mere monoral mutants presented on the 5.1 DD mix on the LD as well as the 5.1 DD on the DVD and ironically also the 2.0 on the DVD. The other mixes are also more confined but still very audible. The U.S Laser is worth something, and so, if not even more so, is the LD boxed set from Japan.
