Quick question...

A while back, there was talk here of an original Planet of the Apes comic
in Spanish. Are scans of the complete issue available anywhere, and does
anyone know of any other foreign POTA comics that are not reprints of US
material (aside from Apeslayer and the hardcover annuals, which I already
have)?

Thanks!

Subject: PLANET: an audio nightmare
.html
.html I just went back and played some of the 1998 PLANET laserdisc.  The UK review is right.  I've never noticed it before but turning up the levels on my left, right and surround channels of my system then playing the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) soundtrack on the PLANET '98 LD revealed a lot of separation in the music and sound effects that's just not there in the DVD's DD 5.1 or 2.0 soundtracks.  I now think that the DVD's audio is more of a mess than I did already.  Anyone here who's writing to Fox about what they want on a 5 Star Edition of PLANET should add "a proper Dolby Digital 5.1 mix with clearly defined stereo effects and directionalized dialogue."  The soundtrack on the DVD is really a travesty, even BATTLE sounds better!  I'll be writing again to Fox soon and I'll post my letter here.  I know there has to be some of you that also care about this as much as me.  "Somebody has to begin to care!"

Subject: POTA card sets !
.html
Hello all: I have a question, correct me if i'm wrong. There are
only 4 sets of Planet of the apes cards (1) the 1967 movie set (2)
the 1975 T.V.show set (3) the 1999 inkwork 90+ card set and (4) the
Tim Burton movie card set. Was this all or were there others ?
Also someone had a question about foreign Ape comics : all I have
ever seen was the U.K.stuff, I have a complete set of the British
Magazines. Terry Hoknes out of Canada may be able to help, he seems
to be the expert on POTA foreign paper items. He has a listing for
Planeta Dos Macacos 1-5 (Spain ) He is at : www.hoknes.com

Thank you Rory(and others ) for the welcome ! To answer your question
about my wife & cats, 1st off my cats don't care as long as I can
afford FANCY FEAST, and my wife don't care as long as I can keep
making payments on the KAY jewelers card !

Well, I did mention those French comics that popped up on eBay (won by
Eric Greene) but I've no idea if they contain original material or
not - from the picture, it looked like they may well have had some
original cover art (and better than the UK stuff too) but I have no
idea what they contain.

That's a unique website. They said the Region 2 soundtrack is good, right? I think the improved picture (anamorphic) and sound on the Region 2 (UK) DVDs is what we'll get in the relrelease. Meanwhile, UK fans can be smug. Etc.   - - - Jeff

Subject: [Planet of the Apes] PLANET: an audio nightmare

I just went back and played some of the 1998 PLANET laserdisc.

A few weeks back I came across a website dedicated to celebrity autographs. I
looked up Charlton Heston and his address was listed and all the feedback
stated that he signs and returns items. So I decided to give it a shot and
sent an 8 x 10 black and white promo photo of Heston as Taylor in his ANSA
uniform, along with a self addressed stamped envelope and a nice letter
telling him how much I enjoyed his work (especially in POTA of course). This
was literally 2 days before Heston made his big announcment regarding his
health. After hearing that I felt somewhat guilty and hoped he didn't think I
was trying to cash in or something. Anyways, I got the photo back today and
it had a nice, bold signature on it. It is now one of my prized possessions
in my Apes collection. Pretty cool!

I have "Planeta Dos Macacos" issues sent to me by Luiz Adami of Brazil.
It's reprinted US comics but they're in color (and in Portugese). There's 2
comic book segments, basically the Marvel adaptations. In the middle are
original "Ape" articles (that I can't read. Here's what I have:

#1 - Pt. 1 and 2 of the original adaptations, plus 2 articles: "A Volta Ao
Elo Perdido" and "Do Livro Ao Planeta Dos Macacos". Mostly it's photos from
the movie with a couple of off-the wall illustrations (an evolution chart, a
rocket ship). There's also a letters column. Actually, these are mini
versions of the marvel mag but with new articles. Oh, and each one has a
centerfold poster.

#2 - Pt. 3 & 4 of "planet" adapt.; an article on the makeup and one on
Heston; a Cornelius centerfold; letters section. Hey, these are pretty cool.

# 6 - Hah! Part 1 of the "Battle" adaptation (in color). They went from
"Planet" to "Battle".No wait, this is that story between "Conquest " and
"Battle" they did. Both parts in this issue (in color); letters column;
centerfold poster of Caesar's family; And an article with pictures of POTA
and the 1976 "King Kong".

#9 - The middle chapters of Marvel's "Beneath" adaptation (Brent and Nova
arriving in the underground city - the apes marching in the desert, whatever
# those were); article: "O Macaco do Elo Perdido"; Brent and Nova poster.

#11 - 2 parts of their "Escape" adaptation; 2 articles about real apes, and
an unrelated article about someone named Ela.

# 13 - Pt. 1 & 2 of the "Conquest" adaptation; 2 articles on the ocean ( 1
on sharks). Burke and Virdon poster; letters column has long since stopped.

# 14 - Pt. 3 & 4 of "Conquest" (as I said, all these adaptations are
colorized); and a lengthy article on the '76 "King Kong", including cast and
crew credits. All the other issues I have have reprints of the Marvel
covers; this one has King Kong and the Universal Monsters, probably from a
Marvel magazine.

# 15 - last 2 parts of "Conquest"; takes up the whole issue, no articles or
anything.

I don't know how many there were. These are just issues Adami sent me from
time to time, because that's the kind of guy he is! But there were more than
Hoknes' 5. Etc. - - - Jeff

Yes, Heston is very nice about mail, and so is Kim Hunter (who says she
often gets the photo of them kissing through the mail and Chuck has already
signed it). I wrote Heston back when he had his surgery and he sent me a
Christmas card! - - Jeff

POTA2001 was a question on "Jeopardy" tonight (the immortal line "Never
send a monkey to do a man's job"). In a review of the new "Pulp Fiction" DVD
I read that Tarantino wanted Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer for the film after
seeing them in "Monkey Park". Ironic, eh? Thade, monkey...uh, I guess you
had to be there. "Monkey Park" would also be a good title for the next
"Jurassic Park". You could combine dinosaurs and intelligent apes. It would
make the money of "Jurassic Park 3" and POTA2001 combined! I'm going to
start writing it right now. I think there's a chance Zanuck will produce it.

How good are the colouring jobs? Are they similar to the "Adventures

The coloring looks very tacky and rushed. I guess they figured kids like
color. They also colored many of the pictures in the articles, like a
picture is all yellow or green. Looks very comic bookey, like someone went
through the Marvel magazine with a crayon. Etc. - - - Jeff

Hi Michael,

They released "special editions" of Tarantino's movies: "Reservoir Dogs",
"Pulp Fiction" and "Jackie Brown" (2 of the 3 featured Tim "Thade" Roth).
They've got all the bells and whistles except that Tarantino is one of those
guys who doesn't like to do commentaries. "Pulp" and "Jackie" came out this
week, "Dogs" next week (the only one that's 2 discs). There's deleted
scenes, docs, archives, etc. By the way, Roth was considered for the role
that went to Travolta. Tarantino is working on 2 back to back films.

I got my final "Ape" Kubricks today, the "Beneath" and "Conquest" sets. I
showed them to Elizabeth Hurley, before we had sex. She noted that that you
can almost see the whole story of the movies with them. I said, " You are
very perceptive. I think that's what I love most about you". I like the
"Conquest" the best, just because it's hilarious to have that violent movie
about guerilla revolt in a Lego style. Etc. - - - Jeff

Hey Jeff, why didn't you show them to her WHILE you were having sex? That
would have kept her interest at least. I worry about you sometimes. You
don't have lamp shades made of human skin by any chance do you?
Best,
KEN

I sold my human skin lampshades on ebay. They're even in less demand than
POTA2001 toys. People are only interested if they were Jeffrey Dahmer's.

I have often thought that that device in CONQUEST was a bit of a cheat in the film, just a lazy means by which Dehn got Armando to get upset enough to put up a fight to get out of the room and hence fall from the window. Other than that I'd have to say that I've truly never given the authenticator much thought at all.

*** I like the parallelisms (pointed out by Eric Greene in his book)
between the Dehn flicks: in BENEATH, the Mutants use their telepathic
abilities to interrogate Brent--directly messing around with his mind;
in ESCAPE, Hasslein has Dixon shoot up Zira with sodium pentothal,
which affects her mind and makes her tell the truth; in CONQUEST both
Armando and Caesar are subjected to electronic tortures (Armando via
the Authenticator, Caesar via the shock-table) in order to force them
to divulge information they're each trying to hide; in BATTLE, Kolp
wants to interrogate Caesar (and his pals), but his cronies are
unsuccessful in capturing them... meanwhile, Mandemus undergoes two
separate Q&A sessions in which he is the questioner (asking about the
uses of weapons by Caesar, first, then Aldo later on), but there is no
force used on the questionee, of course, in this case.
In PLANET, of course, at the "ad hoc tribunal"/"hearing", Taylor is
not interrogated so much as he is forcibly kept quiet (excepting when
Honorius asks him the bogus questions--"What is our second Article of
Faith?"--as if he could possibly know that in order to "prove" his
ability to think!).

I just remembered another similar scene to the above scenes of
malevolent interrogation: the "Ludovico technique" in "A CLOCKWORK
ORANGE". Granted, Alex isn't really interrogated so much as he is
conditioned in Pavlovian style to react against violence, rape,
Beethoven's music ("oops")... and it IS a procedure that he
unwittingly volunteers to undergo in order to get out of prison
early... but there's something about the 'feel' of that scene that the
scenes in the APES flicks remind me of. Being at the mercy of those
who don't HAVE any mercy, really.
It makes me wonder what kinds of interrogations the U.S. military
intelligence guys are conducting against the Al Qaeda "detainees"...

The black guy in "FROM BEYOND" was in George Romero's terrific sequel
"DAWN OF THE DEAD". "DAWN..." has to be one of my 5 favorite horror
flicks of all time; I saw it at a midnite show when I was 14 and it
was the most graphically violent thing I'd ever seen--scared the
bejeezus outta me! I read somewhere that there's going to be a remake
of "DAWN OF THE DEAD"--but I can't see it being as good as the
original. The remake of "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" was rather blah.
Maybe if the remake of "DAWN" is set at the Mall of America near
Minneapolis... and maybe if they make it at least as bloody as the
original... maybe it'll be worth seeing.

Ack, I hope they never do tihs -- Dawn of the Dead is also one of my
favorite horror flicks, right up there with the fist Psycho, the first
Hellraiser, the first Omen, and the first Halloween. Remakes rarely ever
work -- the remake of Night of the Living Dead bored me to tears, and the
changed ending (his turning into a zombie instead of his being shot down
while still human) destroyed the original's social commentary about
mankind. The only horror remakes I've ever enjoyed more than the first
were The Fly and The Thing.

I wonder if this doesn't simply show that Dehn had only a few plots running around in his head and that maybe what the sequels needed almost as much as higher budgets were other writer's input.

I saw DAWN OF THE DEAD in college, high on pot, and laughed my head off, as did most of the college audience.  I really don't see that film as a serious horror film but rather a gross-out satire.  The idea of remaking it makes about as much sense as the ending of POTA2001.  What did you think of THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985)?  I thought that was really funny.

Return of the Living Dead is a great parody. Its first sequel is a waste
of time, though, and the second sequel is more like an unauthorized
sequel to the original trilogy.

I saw some of an episode of RAWHIDE yesterday on the Hallmark Channel (I'd rather my cable company gave me Turner Classic Movies, but no).  Anyway, Kim Hunter was the guest star.  It was cool watching her play scenes with a young Clint Eastwood.  She played this lady who hated indians and had poisoned some of them.  The episode was titled "Incident of the Misplaced Indians" and it was first telecast on May 1, 1959.  Kim Hunter was shot and killed at the end.  She died in Clint Eastwood's arms.  I think T would have cried.

astronauts in Taylor's ship. Taylor is confident enough that
Hasslein's "theory of Time in a vehicle travelling nearly the speed of
light" is correct, since he tells Landon, "It's a fact, Landon; buy
it--you'll sleep better." Landon stubbornly refuses to accept the
truth of Hasslein's theory, insisting that Taylor "prove it: if we
can't get back, it's still JUST a theory..."

I was just reading up on one of the stars that Taylor's crew would not
have been able to avoid seeing/observing during the six months after
takeoff and prior to hibernation: Betelgeuse, a.k.a. Alpha Orionis. We
know that their destination is "320 lightyears from Earth on an
unnamed planet in orbit around a star in the constellation of Orion"
(as Taylor tells Landon). Betelgeuse is the brightest star in that
constellation... MOST of the time... and it would tend to become
brighter and brighter as their ship voyaged towards it during the
almost 2000 years of EARTH-TIME their voyage was to last
(corresponding to 18 months of SHIP-TIME).

Just to refresh your memory, you'll recall that Taylor--in PLANET's
opening scene--finishes up his "final report" about 6 months of SHIP-
TIME after departing from Cape Kennedy [SHIP-TIME "7-15-1972", or 6
months after SHIP-TIME "1-15-1972"], "less than an hour" shy of 6
months exactly, in fact. He glances towards the chronometer console
and sees the EARTH-TIME date "3-23-2673" switch to "3-24-2673" and
mentions that "the Earth has aged nearly 700 years since we left it".
Then, about 93-to-94 seconds (of SHIP-TIME) later, the EARTH-TIME date
switches from "3-26-2673" to "3-27-2673". In other words, during about
93 or 94 seconds of Time as Taylor experiences it, 259,200 seconds of
Time pass by on planet Earth (3 days times 86,400 seconds per day).
This means that one moment of Time on the ship equals approximately
2,757 moments of Time back on planet Earth. Every 1.3 seconds of SHIP-
TIME equals an entire hour back on Earth.

According to the website [http://www.stellar-database.com/Scripts/
search_star.exe?Name=Betelgeuse], the red giant star Betelgeuse varies
in luminosity, its minimum luminosity being "4520 x Sol" and its
maximum being "14968 x Sol"; this variable range in luminosity is due
to the fact that it is--as Boulle termed it in "La Planète des
Singes"--a "palpitating star"; that is, it puffs up like a balloon in
size (which, of course, makes it brighter, more luminous) and then
deflates again, decreasing the luminosity towards its minimum. The
periodicity of this phenomenon--the "Period of variability"--is 2335
days, during which the star's visual magnitude increases... then
decreases... then increases... then decreases... etc. etc. ad
infinitum (or at least until it goes supernova).

So, then: Betelgeuse's brightness fluctuates at a perceptible rate,
undergoing this cyclic change in luminosity every 2335 days (or, once
every 6.393 years--of "Earth-Time" of course). Yet from the
perspective of Taylor's crew, this phenomenon should be observed at a
different rate, since their Ship-Time rate is about 1/2757th that of
planet Earth. That means that 2,757 Earth-Time days pass by every
Ship-Time day--and that means that every Ship-Time day they should be
able to observe this luminosity palpitation at least once. Divide 2757
by 2335, and you get 1.18 palpitations per Ship-Time day, or once
every 0.847 Ship-Time days (once every 20 hours 19 minutes 35
seconds). What takes Earth-bound astronomers more than 6 years to
observe takes Taylor's crew less than a single "day" (of SHIP-TIME).

All Landon (or Dodge, or whoever) had to do, in order to "prove" the
veracity of the Hasslein Hypothesis was to look at Betelgeuse out the
front window through a telescope and calculate its luminosity on an
hourly basis. After a couple of SHIP-TIME days, they couldn't help but
notice that a couple Betelgeuse palpitations of luminosity had
occured.

Thus, Landon's persistent doubts as to the truth of Hasslein's Theory
of Time in a vehicle travelling nearly the speed of light are
unfounded, and Taylor is well within his rights to declare the
"hypothesis" to be "a fact".

And you all (you too, Rory) can "buy it" and "sleep better" tonight.

Sorry, that subject line was just to get Lord T's attention.

All that just to get to this, Patrick.  You are the King of Verbosity.  Anyway, you're forgetting one thing, Patrick -- the phsyical impossibility of human beings traveling at near-light speed.  I believe I'm correct in stating that we couldn't hope to survive the increase in mass.

Also, what do you think (briefly please) of Boulle using Betelgeuse in his book?  A highly unlikely place to find an earth-like planet don't you think?

Just thought I'd jump in here and say that faster than light travel would be impossible using conventional engines like those seen on the back of the ship in POTA. Only way I see such travel working would be thru the use of engines like those seen in Star Trek. They warp or bend space in such a way that the increase in mass would not be a problem cause the ship is actually not traveling faster than light, more like half the speed of light, but the engines sort of squeeze the space in between point A and B to be closer together so the travel speed seems to be of great speed. (1000-10000 times faster than light) I guess that's why they call them 'Warp' engines. ;o)

That's just plain wrong.  It's low budget made it far scarier than the sequels.  Though it did give Dennis Hopper a comeback.  It was funny to watch him swing those chainsaws.  Their bigger budgets failed to make them scarier.

Funny you should mention it...I saw Orion for the first time since last spring.  It's low in the early pre-dawn southeastern sky.  So, get out your telescopes folks and you might just see the Planet of the Apes off the shoulder of Orion!  Or attack ships on fire, if you believe Rutgar Hauar.  For those of you who are actually interested it's the left shoulder.  The big reddish star.  The other is Bellatrix.  And Orion is also know as The Hunter!  The Hunter -- Kim Hunter, coincidence?  Or something more?  You be the judge my friends.  Keep an eye on the skies.  And keep an eye out for more of Kim's coincidences coming soon to a website near you.

.htmlOK, so I'm looking at eBay earlier in the day and I ran across this gorilla suit. I looked at the pictures, as well as his write up, and wrote him a polite letter stating that the outfit he is offering is not from Planet, but from Beneath...

He did write back to me, and here is what he had to say:

Hello and thank you for your interest in my auction. I have had a similar response from a couple of ebayers in the past and investigated the matter a bit further. For some reason there is a belief among some collectors that ALL the gorillas in the first movie wore a RIBBED, real leather vest; therefore any vinyl suits had to be from the second movie. However, upon checking with enlargements of 1) original photos and b) actual shots captured from the DVD, it can be shown that the vests of the; background Gorillas in the first movie wore vinyl vests with simulated rib lines.

If you base your assumption on something other than the vest, please kindly let me know and I will investigate the issues accordingly...I truly appreciate your comments.

I wanted to "pull a Rory" and add the picture of the suit into this email, but I was not able to figure it out... I have added the link to the sight though... Here it is:

              eBay item 1557142116 (Ends Aug-25-02 18:48:47 PDT ) - POTA 1968 GORILLA SUIT+Don PostMASK GR8 PRICE

I have never seen a "vinyl" Gorilla suit in Planet as this man says there was. Can anyone in here offer me other ways to point out his mistake to him, since he did not accept that it's from Beneath because it is a vinyl background suit... I am not trying to be a know it all and prove this man wrong, I just simply do not care to see items misrepresented, either deliberately, or (as it seems to be in this case), by misunderstanding.

And, if there "were" any vinyl background gorillas, please tell me where they are on the dvd, because, as I mentioned, I've yet to see (or notice) one...

Subject: [Planet of the Apes] This suit on eBay (I need your help ape clothing experts)

OK, so I'm looking at eBay earlier in the day and I ran across this gorilla suit.

This guy is either a liar or just dumb.  This is a gorilla suit from BENEATH.  All the jackets in PLANET were leather and ribbed.  Not only that but the belt around the waist is from the TV show.  It's crap unless you're really into owning anything from APES.

It's actually pretty much as the poster makes it look, but it is a low budget movie and not really that good.  Worth watching just so you can say, "I saw that." and know what you're talking about.

This does not evwn appear to be a genuine "background" suit.

It looks more like a Gorilla suit offerd in the mid-90's.

On her website ( www.lindaharrison.com ) Linda H. wrote some words about Heston's condition. She says his role was the best part of the new movie and that Heston said (at that July 4 thing) that the fans wanted the original themes and actors (he may be on to something). Anyway, if you want to read her letter, go to "News". Etc.                 - - - Jeff

Just some simple HTML source reading to find out the direct link to the file. (To view source click View in IEs main menu, then click Source.) Sometimes you can also get protected pics that have turned off right-clicking by putting your mouse pointer over the pic and pushing the 'Menu' key on a Windows keyboard to pull up the save menu. (The menu key is to the right of the space bar between the 'Windows' key and the 'Ctrl' key.) Of course if all else fails, you can always press the print screen key and paste / crop the image in any image editor. So its really impossible to protect any picture on the internet. Best anyone can do is make it slightly difficult. :o)

There's 2 reviews of a preview screening of Fox's next great sci-fi remake at www.aintitcool.com . "Solaris" is produced by James Cameron (finally reimagining 5 years after he was supposed to do "Apes") and directed by Steven Soderbergh (whose first movie he ever remembers seeing was the original POTA). The first review is a rave, saying it's thoughtful sci-fi he can't get out of his mind, the second says it's pretentious pseudo-sci-fi by a Kubrick wanna-be (but compares it to "Eyes Wide Shut", not "2001"). We shall see this November, but this is the movie I'm looking forward to this winter (this and "Lord of the Rings 2"; the preview on the DVD is awesome). - - Jeff

Yes, there was an episode that featured Planet playing in the background on the drive in screen... And even though I don't remember the plot of the episode, I do remember Apes being on there, because  I was without a VCR at the time (it was broken and I hadn't gotten a new one at that point), and sad as it was, that episode was the only way I could even catch a glimpse of Apes...

I signed it... Even though I don't have the Sci-Fi Channel anymore, I do think that the author's petition makes perfect sense, and I hope it's successful in getting the station back to it's original intent.

You know, I caught the TV-ography of 'Wonder Years" on A & E. It's like
"Biography" but about TV shows. And they show that POTA clip in that. So if
you don't want to scour "Wonder Years" episodes, just look for that.

Obviously you folks don't believe me about Liz Hurley, so forget it. I have
nothing to prove. We'll be very happy all neglected and stuff. He he he!She
                  she she! Etc. - - - Jeff

- - Jeff

Just some simple HTML source reading to find out the direct link to the file. (To view source click ‘View’ in IE’s main menu, then click ‘Source’.) Sometimes you can also get protected pics that have turned off right-clicking by putting your mouse pointer over the pic and pushing the 'Menu' key on a Windows keyboard to pull up the save menu. (The menu key is to the right of the space bar between the 'Windows' key and the 'Ctrl' key.) Of course if all else fails, you can always press the print screen key and paste / crop the image in any image editor. So it’s really impossible to protect any picture on the internet. Best anyone can do is make it slightly difficult. :o)
