I have that episode of "The Wonder Years" on tape.  I remember the first time I saw it, it was incredible, waves of nostalgia swept over me.  It was as if I were in a time warp.  However, CONQUEST was the only POTA film I saw at a Drive-In.

One person voted.  What does that tell you?   Who sets up these polls?  It seems most here don't pay any attention.  You want to know something?  Just ask it in the group.

DVDs poised to push aside videocassettes
    By RICK LYMAN
    The New York Times

LOS ANGELES - Digital video discs and their players, which five years ago were not much more than the toys of gadget-lust sufferers, have now taken full wing as a true pop culture phenomenon.

According to industry projections, Americans will spend nearly $3 billion more on DVDs this year than they did last, an increase of 50 percent. Some recent hit films, like The Fast and the Furious and Training Day, have earned more from their DVD releases than from their first-run theater engagements. And for the first time, DVD sales have surpassed those of videocassettes, even though DVD players are in only about a third of American households, compared with a saturation of more than 90 percent for videocassette players.

In the face of this, American retailers have shown the first major signs of making a per- manent shift to DVDs from videocassettes, much as they did to CDs from vinyl albums a decade ago.

"It is the most successful home entertainment device in history," said Warren Lieberfarb, president of Warner Home Video. "In five years, it has gone from zero to 30 million households, and a quarter of those have more than one DVD player. Nothing else has come close to doing that in such a short time, not CDs, not VCRs, not personal computers, not even television itself.

"Early estimates in 1997 and 1998, the first years that DVDs were on the market, projected that it would take substantially longer for the new format to assert itself. But no one foresaw how quickly Hollywood studios would move to put their recent releases and extensive libraries onto the shiny new discs. By decade's end, all of them had.

And few predicted how quickly the price of DVD players would drop. They typically cost $600 to $700 in 1997 and now go for $150 to $160, with some retailers last Christmas offering players for as little as $79.

Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research, a leading monitor of the entertainment industry, said that "the main, wild variable" that caused the explosion of growth was the entry of Chinese manufacturers into the DVD player market in the last two years. "That forced the Japanese to slash their prices," he said. "So we have seen both an unprecedented rate of price decrease on the hardware front and an unprecedented rate of software support in the form of movie titles being released."

Adding to the popularity of DVDs is that many computers and gaming systems can now play them. Viewers are no longer chained to their TV sets; they can watch DVDs in the car, on the train, even at work.

Bolstering sales further is that, unlike videocassettes, which ruled home entertainment for a generation, DVDs are much more likely to be bought than rented - sometimes purchased more than once as upgraded or expanded versions of films are released with new bells and whistles.

A case in point is the sequential release on DVD and VHS cassette of three versions of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. A release earlier this month will be followed in November by an expanded version, with 30 minutes of extra scenes woven in and interviews with the filmmakers, and then by a deluxe four-disc set with more features. New Line Cinema, which released the film, is counting on some DVD aficionados to buy two and perhaps all three versions, leaving it to future scholars to ponder which is the definitive version of the movie.

The movie's sales pattern in its first days on store shelves shows how rapidly the digital format is supplant-ing old-fangled videocassettes, particularly for blockbuster films that appeal to a young male audience. While New Line estimates a sales breakdown of 65 percent DVD to 35 percent VHS - representing no small surge on the DVD front - Video Business magazine, citing sources from among the studio's unnamed competitors, estimates an even greater disparity. It projects that the film sold 5.2 million to 6.5 million copies in its first week (beginning Aug. 6), of which only a million to 1.5 million copies were VHS.

Making this shift even more lucrative for the studios is the cost of manufacturing DVDs, which at slightly more than a dollar per disc is less than half that for a cassette.

A movie's initial theatrical release, particularly its opening weekend, is still the event that drives the film's performance overall. A box office hit is more likely to become a pay-TV hit and a video store hit. But in terms of dollars flowing into studio coffers, home entertainment is king.

Typically, a film's initial release accounts for only one-fifth of what it will eventually bring in, while home entertainment has been more than double that in recent years. And since the advent of DVD, the home entertainment portion has crept up to account for more than half of a movie's ultimate revenue.

In 2001, $10.3 billion was spent in the United States to buy copies of films for home use, of which $5.4 billion, or 52 percent, went for DVDs. Adams Media Research estimates that in 2002, $12.4 billion will be spent, of which $8.1 billion, or 65 percent, will go for DVDs.

"The initial release of the motion picture in movie theaters is becoming, to a large extent, little more than a preview trailer for the subsequent purchase of the DVD," said Martin W. Greenwald, president of Image Entertainment, which produces dozens of pop music and DVD titles for the retail market.

Training Day, the police thriller that won Denzel Washington an Oscar, made $76.3 million in its initial theatrical release, but by the end of June had earned $86.1 million on sales and rentals of its DVD, according to the latest figures available.

The Fast and the Furious made $144 million at the North American box office, but it had earned the same amount on DVD sales and rentals by the end of June and has continued to be a top seller and rental item since.

The sudden dominance of DVD is transforming the rental market as well as sales: DVD rentals in the first half of 2002 were up 116 percent from the first half of 2001, while video rentals (though still a larger proportion of the rental market) declined 22 percent. Although some in the industry cling to the notion that videocassettes will persevere, most believe that they will gradually - or perhaps not so gradually - go the way of the vinyl disc and the goonie bird.

"My guess is that within 24 months it will become very difficult to find any titles in video, other than family films," said Benjamin S. Feingold, president of Columbia Tri-Star Motion Picture Group.

Family films are an important part of the home video industry because children, much more than adults, are eager to watch the same movies over and over, making buying them much more economical than renting.

DVDs, which are a vast improvement in quality over cassettes and have many more features - director commentary, for instance, or alternate endings - are also changing the way that millions of Americans watch movies at home. The enhanced video and audio qualities are nudging more people toward elaborate home theater systems. The digital nature of DVD allows viewers to pop in a disc and watch only one or two favorite moments instead of a whole film, much like a favorite track on a CD, changing movie watching from a linear experience to a more interactive one.

How these changes will affect the way the movies are made is still, largely, a subject of conjecture in Hollywood. But everyone agrees there will be inevitable changes.

Racy or explosive scenes that may not make a PG cut for movie theaters can still be shot in hopes of placing them on DVD versions. And seldom before have filmmakers allowed such early access to behind-the-scenes documentarians, creating a vast new pool of information about how movies are made that, many hope, will have a positive effect on dwindling film literacy.

"Directors have embraced the format so enthusiastically, much more than they ever did with VHS," Feingold said. "As a result, they're getting involved right from the beginning in the making of the extra DVD material and taking a much more hands-on approach to the DVD release. It can't help but have an impact.

"Warner Bros., the leading studio in terms of DVD sales and rentals, estimates that the number of players in American homes increased 53 percent from mid-2001 to mid-2002. Most estimate that, by year's end, about 40 percent of American households will have them.

Add to that personal computers with DVD drives and sophisticated game systems that can play DVDs, and more than half of American households will have the ability to watch DVDs, Adams Media Research predicts.

"One profound impact that DVD is having is that it's re-energized people's buying behavior," said Bob Chapek, present of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Disney's video and DVD division. "Even in the heyday of VHS, the average household bought about five videocassettes a year. Now, consumers are buying 15 DVDs per year.

"Earlier this summer, the Circuit City electronics chain announced that it intended to stop selling videotapes to devote its shelf space to DVDs, and many experts predict that giant retailers such as Wal-Mart may soon follow suit.

Lieberfarb, the Warner Home Video president, said, "I think we are looking at somewhere this side of five years away when videotapes will disappear from stores altogether."

"I think if I were to travel to the Forbidden
City I might be able to find some old DVDs.
I want a copy of THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
with that adorable Paul Williams.  I think I'll take
Patrick Michael Tilton with me and on the journey
we can discuss out theories on time and space
and which one of us is the more boring."

This doesn't seem right at all... I mean I am sure I voted in this "poll" and of course I voted "NO"... How my vote wasn't counted is beyond me... Where the hell is this poll taken, Florida?

    .htmlWow!  This sounds pretty cool. . . . .

What a Glorious Feeling! 'Singin' In The Rain' Is Restored
Warner Home Video has demonstrated a new digital process, called Ultra-Resolution, that it has used to remaster the classic Technicolor musical Singin' in the Rain
for DVD, due to be released on Sept. 24. As Video Store magazine describes the process in its online edition today (Tuesday), the process involved scanning the 443,424 separate frames of the three "master positives" of the Technicolor film. (The original Technicolor process involved using a camera that exposed three rolls of film simultaneously, producing yellow, cyan and magenta images. These were then used to print the individual frames onto celluloid stock with ink, producing the full-color film.) The digital images were then combined electronically, adjusting for aging and film shrinkage. The result, according to Richard May, Warner's chief of film preservation, are images that exceed the clarity of the original. "I don't remember ever seeing so much detail," he told the trade magazine.

I know that Warners is doing a restoration of one of my favorite Technicolor films, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD.  It's supposed to come out next year.  Now I really can't wait.  And another one that I wonder if Warners is working on, even though it's just black and white, is the original KING KONG.  Man, I wish they'd get that out on DVD.

What do you think, Ken Taylor?

I was at the bookstore today and saw the Simpsons Calendar for next year. The theme is musicals from the show and one of the months features their POTA spoof. There's a cool shot of Troy McClure of Taylor in front of the Statue of Liberty and a dancing Gorilla, Zaius and Chimp Nurse.

This DVD links page from www.thecinemalaser.com is the best one I've found so far.  Some of the links are dead because the sites are closed, but you just have to explore.  The Cinema Laser is a good site too for reviews and it's where I've stolen a lot of the POTA pictures I've posted.  As for the Looney Tunes, I think I read something about a bunch of them coming out, but I can't remember.  However, since Warners is about to make a new Looney Tunes movie directed by Joe Dante and starring everybody's favorite Brendan Fraser, I expect we'll finally start to see Tunes DVDs around the time of its release.

      Wow!

Now here's a Poll question:  How many of you were fans of KONG before or after you saw POTA?  How many of you would get it on DVD?

Remember, KING KONG was Arthur P. Jacobs favorite movie.

Well, here's something else they have in Britian that we don't here, but I'm sure it's not restored.

Now here's a Poll question:  How many of you were fans of KONG before or after you saw POTA?  How many of you would get it on DVD?

Remember, KING KONG was Arthur P. Jacobs favorite movie.

Didn't that '77 remake suck?  I once saw the original KING KONG in a movie theatre.  It was back in the mid-seventies and it had restored footage in it.  Unfortunately there weren't that many people in the theatre so it was pretty much like seeing it on TV, only bigger.  You sound like an old cynic saying you won't get it on DVD unless it's got cool extras.  Well, I think it will have cool extras.  I expect it'll get the same treatment on DVD that "Citizen Kane" did.

You buy "Mad Monster Party" but say maybe no to "King Kong"?!!!  You bloody baboon!

Not gonna happen till DVD players can play and record, while costing the same as a vcr does now, with comparable prices for the blank media used (DVDrw discs). (That's at least ten years away and by then some new thing will be out makin everyone cream in their pants to have and DVD's won't be worth shit anymore.) Anyway, I don't think DVD will push VHS out that fast when DVD players can do nothing but play DVD's. How the hell is a person supposed to record their favorite TV show with a DVD player? And no, Tivo isn't the answer either as it records in a completely non portable way. (No video tape to pop out and take to a friends house to watch.) Maybe I'm too old for my own good, but I'd much rather have my VCR than my DVD player if I was forced to pick just one. DVD technology is still not ready for mass singular use. Hell, they can't even decide on a permanent format for DVD recorders yet for god's sake!!! Yes, that is indeed a stable product...<said sarcastically as possible>

Maybe I'm too old for my own good, but I'd much rather have my VCR than my DVD player if I was forced to pick just one. DVD technology is still not ready for mass singular use. Hell, they can't even decide on a permanent format for DVD recorders yet for god's sake!!! Yes, that is indeed a stable product...<said sarcastically as possible>

Well, given the growth of DVD in the past three years you never know.  Maybe a recordable DVD machine that's cheap isn't that far off?   If this sluggish world economy keeps up that'll slow things down.  I can't wait to get my big-screen 16X9 display for less than a grand.

It says on the site that only regular voters get counted, so that won't work unless you vote regularly using every single name, for several different movies, on a regular basis. :o)

Mad Monster Party has Kong in it ( sort of , and better animated ). Does that count? It's not like the original King Kong is going to be in widescreen or 5.1 sound when it's released on DVD, so the extras would need to be decent..or at least if it's got cool packaging. I'm a sucker for cool packaging. Just got Pulp Fiction from Amazon today, it's nicely packaged.

When I was  a kid, I loved the original and I was first in line for the 1977 remake. I kind of feel like I've seen it so often since then and I had it on VHS, I doubt I'd bother with it on DVD unless it has really cool extras.

No, they moved "Solaris" up to November, I think the 21st or 27. I thought
Cameron would be bummed out about "Terminator 3" but he's giving them script
ideas. Why not? He probably gets a big check as the creator. - - - Jeff

I liked the close up make-up but that Robo-Kong at the end is just plain awful. I remember the stirring in my loins when Kong pulls Dwan's tube top down. The rest was pretty dull. The poster was misleading too, as it had Kong with each foot on each of the twin towers. He wasn't THAT big. King Kong Lives was a laff riot. Has anybody seen the 70's Brit movie Queen Kong? I've never seen it but I had the book when I was young and all 'Ape Crazy'. That was before I became plain crazy.

I'll get it on DVD; I think it's by the people that did the "Citizen Kane" DVD. I don't remember if I saw it before "Apes". I remember I was kind of hot for it when the remake came out in '76. - - Jeff

                Shall do.

I have also scanned a page of the Gold Key Comic - I'll post a link
                within the next few days.

The other day I said I thought the costume on eBay looked like on
that was sold in the mid 80's. I have scanned a photo of this too -
it was made by "Illusive Concepts" and cost avout $50US.

Hey I'm in the remake. In the crowd scene at the WTC. I'm 23,362nd
                from the left.

I was in the crowd scene in Any Given Sunday.  So since Chuck was in that, twice, I could be linked to Kim in one degree in the Kevin Bacon game.  Why Oliver Stone himself pulled me out of a scene.  I'm so proud.

                Betamax: R.I.P.
Sony's Betamax format, in its death throes for years, will finally be allowed to die by the end of the year, the company indicated Tuesday. The format originally dominated the home video market, but, in what experts have described as a classic example of marketing miscalculation, the format lost out to JVC's VHS system when Sony refused to license its technology to other manufacturers. Studios began phasing out home-video releases of their films on Beta in the mid-1980s (coincidentally just as they lost their long-running legal battle with Sony over the right of consumers to record movies and TV shows for their own viewing). Nevertheless, video connoisseurs continued to buy the machines, extolling their superior picture quality and smaller cassettes. But those attributes became moot as digital home-video cameras and DVDs became ever more popular beginning in the late 1990s. A Sony spokesman said Tuesday that digital technologies are fast making all videocassette systems obsolete.

"The Wonder Years" opened their fifth season with an episode titled "The Lake" (Original air date: 10/2/1991).  In it Kevin and Paul go to a drive-in while they're on the end of their summer vacation up at this lake.  There at the drive-in Kevin meets this girl, Cara, and falls deeply in love with her and makes out.  Playing at the drive-in is an APES festival of the first three movies.  You only see bits of PLANET on the screen, but at the concession stand you see posters for BENEATH and ESCAPE.  The episode ends with Kevin going back to the drive-in again the next night, the last night of his summer vacation, and making out with Cara in the front seat of a pickup while on the screen you see Taylor and Nova riding down the beach.  It was SO romantic!  I loved "The Wonder Years" because that kid in it was about my same age at the time the show was supposed to take place.  That drive-in episode is of course my favorite.

But Fred Savage isn't as cool as Bud from "Married With Children", who starred with apes in the parody on "The Rerun Show" last week. - Jeff

No, "The Wonder Years" time frame is from around 1967 to 1972, or '68 to '73.

                Hollywood hunk Leonardo DiCaprio
has cancelled an appearance at the World Development Summit - despite calling on American President George W. BUsh to attend. The Beach star, Susan Sarandon, Patrick Stewart and Bob Geldof were all expected in Johannesburg, South Africa for the summit, which started earlier this week. Earth loving Leo was to support a project to save great apes , but pulled out at the last minute because of "contractual obligations" in his native America. At a rally earlier this month, DiCaprio pleaded with Bush to "please go prepared to join the vast majority of nations in constructing a concrete plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." Organizers of the summit are disappointed at the turnout. They hoped the presence of international celebrities could raise the media profile of the event.

.htmlFirst there was Laser Disc, then DVD, now get ready for the next generation of incredible video discs. . . .

                  (EARLY UPDATE - 8/29/02 - 11:45 AM PDT)

The industry wrangling over the shape of the next generation, high-definition DVD format has been "kicked up a notch" today. As many of you know, some in the industry (led by Warner Bros) have been pushing hard for a red-laser based format
, using discs of similar capacity to today's existing DVD discs, and simply with higher compression to fit high resolution video onto the discs. The idea is that these discs could take advantage of existing manufacturing resources and thus be brought to market faster. Then there is also the Blu-Ray format proposed by Sony and Panasonic, which would take advantage of the finer wavelength of the blue laser and a physical disc capable of storing much greater information.

Well, this morning, Toshiba (which was one of the leading companies behind the development of current DVD) and NEC officially announced that they have proposed a different spec to the DVD Forum
                  - one also based on the blue laser. According to Toshiba, its format could be ready for launch as early as next year, and the players would be backwards compatible with existing DVD discs. They also claim that the new format could still use existing DVD manufacturing plants. And it would also be ready for video recording (you can read more about this announcement here, here, here and here).

What we're starting to see is the development of the kind of format war that resulted in VHS vs. the now defunct Sony Betamax format
, and the current confusion of DVD-Audio vs. Sony's SACD, which has significantly hurt the move to high-resolution audio.

                  At
The Digital Bits , we absolutely back a blue-laser based HD-DVD format. In our opinion, if the industry is going to launch an HD-DVD format, they should do it right, rather than simply rushing an inferior red-laser based format to market. But the industry also needs to get its ducks in a row. With current DVD selling like gangbusters, ANY HD-DVD format is going to be a tough sell to consumers who have just made the move from videotape to disc. The success of a unified DVD format and the lack of interest in DVD-Audio and SACD should be a warning. Whichever HD-DVD format is chosen, ONE FORMAT NEEDS TO BE CHOSEN. If two competing HD formats are launched at the same time, HD-DVD will be dead on arrival. Sony, for one, has never shied away from going it alone by launching its own competing formats - think Betamax, DAT and MiniDisc. We've got nothing against Sony or any other manufacturer. But a format war absolutely CAN NOT HAPPEN. So our advice to the industry is to sit down, talk it out and negotiate a single, unified format like they did with standard DVD. Our advice to Hollywood is to then get on board that unified format. And, most importantly, our advice to all of our readers is this: get active, get vocal and DEMAND that a single unified format be chosen. Let the DVD Forum know that you simply won't tolerate a format war.

Let me state this bluntly: it's time the entertainment industry and the electronics industry got their shit together. And it's time consumers let them know it.

Choose a Favorite Movie, Then See It at Your Local Theater
Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) is planning to launch an experiment in Japan next month that will allow moviegoers to select films from Sony's library of classic films and more recent releases and have them shown at a local multiplex at a time that the moviegoers choose, the British trade publication Screen International reported on its website today (Thursday). The experiment, called Dream Theater, will allow moviegoers to select films, venues, and schedules from a Sony website. After 100 to 150 individuals agree on a film, they will then be able to designate a time and place for it to be shown. Screen International pointed out that the concept not only will generate new revenue from Sony's film library but also reduce risk by having a guaranteed audience.

Don't you listen? They showed the final scene of POTA at a drive-in on the show, and if you watch that special it has the clip. But Fred Savage isn't as cool as Bud from "Married With Children", who starred with apes in the parody on "The Rerun Show" last week. - Jeff

When will that be on again?
I blame my local TV Guide.  It listed the Brady Bunch one or whatever it was but not MWC or POTA or anything!

Well, that's not what was on eBay, but it's close.  When I was 10 I'd have probably wanted that costume very much.  Somewhere I have a photo of me when I was twelve in a Cornelius costume I made for the last Halloween I ever went out on.  If I ever find it I'll post it here.  I won a dollar for it!

According to www.amazon.com, the Prima video game manual to POTA has been postponed to August 2003. It was supposed to come out with the video game in 2001, then it got postponed until, I think, Sept. 2002. Now it's another year. I guess the question is, "Why bother?" Apparently the game flopped and why exactly would they have to postpone it? How hard is it to make a manual? It's not like writing a "Harry Potter" book (obviously that's hard). I was looking forward to the book and would probably buy it if it came out next year as a collectible. But it's looking like this is going to peter out and never get published. Etc.             - - - Jeff

, who directed the original Batman movie in 1989 and the sequel, Batman Returns, in 1992, has agreed to direct Batman: The Musical! on Broadway, the New York Post reported today (Friday), citing theater sources. Jim Steinman, who composed the music for the show, told the newspaper: "We're thrilled he's going to do it. David [Ives, who wrote the libretto] and I floundered around for a year trying to figure out how to musicalize Batman. Then we looked at Tim's original movie and thought, that's it." The Post quoted sources as saying that the music will cost at least $15 million to mount. Plans are to open it out of town in 2004 and on Broadway the following year

Only way I see such travel working would be thru the use of engines like those seen in Star Trek. They warp or bend space in such a way that the increase in mass would not be a problem cause the ship is actually not traveling faster than light, more like half the speed of light, but the engines sort of squeeze the space in between point A and B to be closer together so the travel speed seems to be of great speed. (1000-10000 times faster than light) I guess that's why they call them 'Warp' engines. ;o)

*** The relativistic increase in Mass is more of a perceived problem:
as "seen" by the stay-at-homes on Earth, the astronauts in their
spaceship "seem" to have a higher mass, but this is actually a
function of their higher velocity, which increases their kinetic
energy--and it is the higher energy factor which has to be accounted
for. Remember, Mass and Energy are equivalent in Einstein's theory--
just different forms of the same thing. It's not as if each molecule/
atom/subatomic particle in the astronauts' bodies "clones" itself to
"increase the Mass". That would be rather absurd.
The third effect of relativistic velocity (aside from Time Dilation
and Mass Increase) is "Length Contraction", which doesn't REALLY
happen--it's just what APPEARS to happen from the perspective of the
Earthbound observer. From the perspective of the astronauts on the
accelerated ship, the Mass Increase and Length Contraction are not
perceptible (i.e. they don't feel "more massive" or "skinnier" at
their higher velocity: imagine an astronaut doing somersaults inside
the ship--would he be alternately SKINNIER, then SHORTER, then
SKINNIER, then SHORTER, etc.?)--yet the Time Dilation effect IS
perceptible, since it directly relates the flow of time that they
experience ("SHIP-TIME") with the rate of Time in the unaccelerated
medium/"frame-of-reference" of the Universe in which they are
travelling in and from which they started accelerating in ("EARTH-
                                  TIME").
So, it isn't really impossible physically to travel at "nearly the
speed of light" according to Einstein's theory of Relativity; only
travelling AT or FASTER THAN lightspeed is impossible. Keep in mind,
though, that in the POTA films we're not dealing with Einstein's
theory--we're dealing with HASSLEIN's theory, which must be similar to
Einstein's in some way (i.e. "Time in a vehicle travelling nearly the
speed of light" etc.), yet must be different than it in some way,
otherwise Taylor would have mentioned "according to Einstein's theory"
instead of "Hasslein's theory". As ThyPentacle suggests, this
"Hassleinian" variation of Relativity is most probably due to the ANSA
propulsion system utilizing some sort of SpaceTime warping effect,
which is still affected by Time Dilation effects. In prior postings,
when I went into some detail describing "my scenario" (which James
insists "nobody gives a rat's ass about"), I describe such a
"Hassleinian hyperdrive" engine and its method of warping SpaceTime in
such a way as to produce the ShipTime/EarthTime chronometer readings
we've seen in the POTA saga. I won't repeat all that here, to spare
                                  you any further "verbosity".

In regards to Boulle's use of Betelgeuse as the star around which
Soror revolves, yeah, I agree it's not a likely place to find any
Earth-like planet. The palpitations I described earlier (which Boulle
himself described) would wreak havoc on the biospheres of any planet
within its "lifezone". Every star has a "lifezone" around it, where
the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold, but when a supergiant
like Betelgeuse undergoes its rhythmic palpitations the lifezone
itself would palpitate accordingly, yet the elliptical orbits of any
planets in the system would NOT be able to adjust to this phenomenon,
since their orbital paths are around the center of gravity
("barycenter") of the star at the focus of the ellipse.
So, I wouldn't say it's totally impossible to find a habitable planet
orbiting Betelgeuse... but it's pretty damned unlikely. And I sure as
hell wouldn't want to be around when that star ran out of hydrogen to
burn: when it goes Supernova... YOWZAH! Of course, even here on Earth,
some 300+ lightyears away, even WE will have a bad time of it if
                                  Betelgeuse explodes in our lifetime.

"Solaris" is produced by James Cameron (finally reimagining 5 years after he was supposed to do "Apes") and directed by Steven Soderbergh (whose first movie he ever remembers seeing was the original POTA). The first review is a rave, saying it's thoughtful sci-fi he can't get out of his mind, the second says it's pretentious pseudo-sci-fi by a Kubrick wanna-be (but compares it to "Eyes Wide Shut", not "2001"). *** I have an old copy of "BENEATH" on Beta. Unlike the later VHS
version, this Beta issue has a different pan-&-scan on it: when Brent
asks Nova "Can you talk?" he uses the ASL sign for "talk", twirling
his finger in front of his mouth. The widescreen version, of course,
has all of this easily visible, yet the VHS version crops out Brent on
the left, so you could never see him signing as he spoke... yet the
Beta version cropped out Nova on the right side of the screen instead.
There were a couple other differences, too--such as when Cornelius
rolls his eyes after Zira makes a spectacle of herself during the
Citizens' Council scene. Cornelius' rolling-eyes are cropped out of
one version, but not in the other.
Now that the APES flicks are all out in widescreen, this old copy of
BENEATH on Beta is really only a collector's item, but it's still nice
to have. For about 2 or 3 years it was the only way I could watch any
POTA flick without waiting for some TV station to run it on the late
show. I have no idea what it's worth, but--lest anybody try to get me
to sell it--sorry, folks, it ain't for sale.

BTW, the first VHS release of BENEATH had a mistake on it: the sound
dubbing during the "Lawgiver Vision in the Forbidden Zone" scene was
all messed up. The sounds of the flames & the falling statue continued
on after the illusion-crash, and the only way I knew it was a gaffe
was because I had BENEATH on Beta! I showed the two versions to the
guy who ran the video rental store (back then, it was half-Beta/half-
VHS!), and he ended up sending a letter to the company that first put
out the APES films on VHS. The second versions had corrected the mess-
                                  up.

Isn't it true, Patrick, that before a star becomes a red giant it is a star much like ours.  That being a red giant is a sign of its age and it expands to the size of a red giant because it's nearly burned off one of its gases (I forget which)?  Hence, Betelgeuse may have once had an earth-like planet circling it, but it ate it up when it expanded.  This is, I also believe, going to be the fate of our world.  First our star will shrink to a white dwarf, freezing the earth, then expand to a red giant, consuming our world.  It will then go supernova.  I read some place that Betelgeuse should go supernova sometime in the next ten thousand years, but I'm not sure what you mean, Patrick, that it would affect our world, other than giving us something wonderful to look at.  I'd love to live to see it, but ten thousand years is an awful long time.
