"Blade Runner" is one of Eric Greene's favorites. He's a big fan of writer David Peoples. Three of his favorites are "Blade Runner", "Unforgiven" and "12 Monkeys", I think all written by Peoples. eric prayed he would write the new "Apes", but as you say, there's no god. Etc. - - - Jeff

Patrick, please explain this whole BLADE RUNNER thing.  This movie did nothing for me.  I don't get its lasting appeal.

"First Contact" is the only Next Gen movie I bothered to see (except the abyssmal "Generations"), because Bill Blake recommended it. It was pretty good. I was big on the movies with the original cast when they first came out (more than the TV show) but they didn't hold up well. Cool seeing Mark Lenard and Montalban, though. - - - Jeff

STAR TREK II, III, IV, VI, & VIII (STTMP was a rip off of "The
Changeling" and "The Ultimate Computer" and several other original
episodes; ST-V was ruined by the forced inclusion of ill-placed humor,
in addition to being a rip-off of the episode about the "hippies" who
steal the Enterprise ["The Way to Eden"? yeah, I think that was it];
ST: Insurrection was VILE, and an insult to the pro-science thematic
thrust of Star Trek; ST: Generations was iffy--though I did like the
idea of a lunatic purposely blowing up stars just to create a new
pathway for that goofy "energy ribbon" thingy: why not just fly a
spaceship directly in its path, instead? Oh, I forgot... that would be
the OBVIOUS thing to do!)

Most of the STAR TREK movies have not aged well with me.  I bought the first one's DVD because of Goldsmith's connection, but I haven't even considered getting the ST II special edition.

Patrick, you forgot to add what you thought of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT.  I thought that one was pretty good.  I'm looking forward to STAR TREK: NEMISIS.

LOGAN'S RUN (the book was infinitely better, but I still have a soft
spot in my heart for the movie that got me to read the book in the
first place), SOYLENT GREEN (an improvement on Harry Harrison's
novella "Make Room, Make Room!"), THE OMEGA MAN (an odd adaptation of
"I Am Legend", turning Vampires into Counter-culture hippie-zombies,
but Ah! there's good ol' CHUCK HESTON kickin' ass and takin' names!).

These three movies are really seventies junk as far as I'm concerned, but LOGAN'S RUN has a good Jerry Goldsmith score, and THE OMEGA MAN a good score by Ron Grainer (Yes, I AM LEGEND is a great book.  Why they've never filmed it as written I don't understand.  Just read Matheson's THE SHRINKING MAN.  Another great book.), but SOYLENT GREEN has a lot of problems and this is also the movie where you see the start of Heston wearing a rug.

climax and has a great continuity with the earlier movies.  Unlike you I
wouldn't have liked POTA nearly as much without the sequels.  Like Star Wars,
the POTA sequels turn a story into a saga.

To each his own.  BATTLE was in fact the last APES movie I've watch on DVD lately.  It didn't bother me that much this time and I enjoyed the photography and how many times they had one character in focus on the side of the Panavision frame, and another in the background on the other side.  One thing that still bugged me though is how bad the makeup often looks.

You're asking if there is an intelligence behind the structure of things in the universe.  What one human being can say for sure that the answer is yes?  It's way beyond us all, so why bother thinking about it.  Some people need God, and a God that takes an interest in their lives, in order to make themselves feel better, to know there's a meaning to life and that we're not alone in the universe, but at its root it's a childish need to have such beliefs.  But I don't knock people for having childish needs -- are we not weak, fragile animals?

No everything didn't just happen. But Rory is right when he says

I saw "the Bourne Identity" on Sunday and it was OK, but they missed

I checked out the New York Post article about the "Batman" musical. The guy doing the music says Burton hated the latter 2 movie sequels made by Joel Schumacher and "wants to reestablish his original vision. His major impulse is to redeem the soul of the "Batman" series". Hmmm, too bad Schaffner isn't alive to do the same for POTA after Burton's effort. Isn't it funny the roads life takes? Ah HA HA HA HA!

For those who care, the Batman music will be a mix of "Brecht, Weill, Rodgers and Hammerstein and rock and roll", with "Gotham City as Berlin in the 1930's". Ah HA HA HA HA! Joker and Cat Woman will be the villians. Basically, Warners wants to establish a theatre division like Disney has done with the successful "Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast" theatre stuff.

I like Blade Runner, but "Unforgiven" and "12 Monkeys" I hold as 2 of

Jeff, this illustrates my point about Chris' book - that it is
          seriously lacking.

The Multiple Toymakers set you are talking about is actually the most
basic of the playsets they made. There are at lest 2 other larger
sets that come in a windowed flat box(about 18"x24") that have a
bridge and trees and some toy soldiers (I think it is supposed to be
loosely based on a "Battle" scenario).

There are also another 2 "shoe-box" sized sets. These have a lot of
extra apes as per the original set (like 4 or 5 gorrilas on horse, 3
or 4 Ziras etc) and a HEAP of soldiers, a bridge, trees, mountains
etc. These are the rarer ones, but they don't fetch $700 (maybe if
they were SEALED and MINT they would).

I would say the piece is likely to be on of the latter.

I think Ken may have a catalog with some of these sets
          pictured....KEN?

Yeah, I do have a Multiple Toymakers catalogue for 1975 but my scanner no

I can answer this, having read the script as part of my job. However, so
as not to spoil it for anyone why doesn't want to know, here's some spoiler

The villain of Star Trek: Nemesis is Picard! You see, the plot focuses on
a sub-class of Romulan society called the Remans. If you recall, the
Romulan Star Empire has, at the center of its government, two planets
called Romulus and Remus. We've seen Romulus several times over the years,
but never Remus (well, except for in some of the non-canon novels). The
Remans, as we learn, are a slave class, forced to live underground in caves
as miners. Exposed to radiation, removed from sunlight, they are pale and
distorted -- picture Spock meets Nosferatu, and you get the picture. Well,
25 years before "Nemesis," the Romulans hatched a plot to clone Picard,
then an up-and-coming officer, and replace him with the clone, thereby
giving them a moll inside Starfleet. When internal troubles (as alluded to
in the first-season episode "Neutral Zone") became more important, that
plan and many others were abandoned, and the Picard clone was sent to live
in the mines as a slave -- waste-not-want-not, after all. The Remans,
seeing a chance some day to use the discarded plot to their own advantage,
reared the clone, whom they named Shinzon, as their own. Fast-forward to
the time of Nemesis, and we come to the plan's fruition -- the Remans have
staged an all-out coup, killing the Romulan Senate and taking control of
the Empire. They're determined not only to conquer their Romulan
overlords, but the galaxy at large (I guess squatting in caves makes you a
bit melodramatic after a while... maybe that explains Osama Bin Laden).
Having reared him for this day for two decades, the Remans place Shinzon in
the center-seat, with a Reman Viceroy to watch over and advise him.
Enterprise, of course, is sent in, and we have Old Picard-vs. Young Picard.
The script is quite powerful and should play out well on-screen --
especially with Ron Perlamn playing the Viceroy. The guy playing the
younger Picard (I forget his name at the moment) looks a lot like Patrick
Stewart and is a very good actor. And the Reman make-up is brilliant. A
cool sub-plot, by the way, involves Data finding a "lost brother" named
B-9, who is a simpleton with a fraction of Data's intelligence.

          Dear Apeonauts,

I have appreciated the recent discussion on POTA collectible
figures, and it prompted me to ask a question, which I have meaning
to post for a while (too busy setting up the new Saru no Gundan/Time
          of the Apes Yahoo group
          http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sarunogundan/ , come for a visit!).

Of the 2001 8" figures, my favorite by far is Pericles and his space
pod. It's a wonder they did not release this one with the first run
of figures last summer. I can't imagine it not competing with the
          Attar figure for sales.

In POTA (2001), Pericles is sent out in "Alpha Pod". The other pod
identified in the film is "Delta Pod", with which Leo absconds in
search of Pericles. The Pod designation on my Pericles figure set is
clearly "Exploration Unit H" not "A". Was this an error on all of
them, or does anyone else actually have an "Alpha Pod"?

          Yours, from Mount Garr,
          Menluth.

Yes, Pericles is one of the better figures. My favorite is the Red
soldier. But Krull's good, too. If they'd released Wave 2 first they might
have had better sales. Mine says "Unit H". Maybe they were Alpha and Delta
                pods from Unit H?

That's interesting, a "Time of the Apes" group. I guess the movie is culled
                from a Japanese TV show. - - - Jeff

Well, this sort of freaks me out.  Somebody is selling on eBay an issue of "The Perfect Vision" from 1991 that has an article in it about PLANET OF THE APES.  Why is this freaking me out?  Because I wrote that article, and because the magazine was so obscure I thought it was long forgotten.

Before he created Thade. Before he gave the world Ari. Before Alexander the Great convinced him Leo should steal a horse. Before any of that, Bill Broyles, the beloved creator of POTA2001, wrote the Tom Hanks vehicle (literally and figuratively) "Apollo 13". And this Sept. 20 it will bow at the famed IMAX theatres. Now, other feature films have played IMAX, but reportedly this is the first time they are remastering a film specifically for IMAX, using a new technology called Digital Remastering. The film is the first to be transferred from 35 mm to 15 perf  70mm and it will reportedly look awesome. That's your Bill Broyles news for today.- - - Jeff

That's what we need is a THING 2.  Hey, I like the THING remake, but Carpenter had a better than average script to work from AND IT STILL BOMBED.  Carpenter is a hack's hack.

                    Tuesday, September 3, 2002 4:52 CDT

British director J. Lee Thompson, whose more than 50 films included the original Cape Fear, The Guns of Navarone, Planet of the Apes sequels and nine Charles Bronson movies, has died at the age of 88.

Thompson, who spent summers in Canada, died Friday of congestive heart failure in Sooke, British Columbia, publicist Robert Rooney told the Associated Press.

"He was a very large directorial presence," said co-producer Pancho Kohner. "He was a gentleman and such a pleasure to work with. Everyone who worked with him once wanted to work with him again and again."

Thompson moved to the United States after the Academy Award-nominated The Guns of Navarone in 1961 starring Peck and Quinn, and tackled American subjects such as the musical "Huckleberry Finn" in 1974; Conquest of the Planet of the Apes in 1972 and Battle for the Planet of the Apes in 1973.

Thompson is survived by his wife of 40 years, Penny, a daughter and a granddaughter. His son, Peter Lee, is deceased. The family spent winters in Los Angeles.

Yeah, POTA is getting top mentions. He was Arthur's favorite director. He was approached first about the original POTA. Did "What A Way to Go", "The Chairman" and "Huckleberry Finn" for him. With "Conquest" and "Battle", that's almost half of Jacobs' films. Damn! I bet this winter it would have been DVD time. I'll be keeping an eye on Aint-it-cool-news.com for the next couple days to see if they mention this.  I like reading the comments.  I was just there.  Nothing about Thompson yet, but the comments about a possible remake of THE THING and BATMAN: THE MUSICAL are great.

                    J. Lee Thompson, who directed the classic (and original) stalker-thriller CAPE FEAR, as well as two of the original PLANET OF THE APES films, has died in British Columbia at the age of 88.

Thompson also brought to the screen the classic World War II mission film THE GUNS OF NAVARONE. He was able to bring some war experience to the NAVARONE shoot, as he worked through the war as a tail-gunner on a B-29. The movie snagged an Academy Award nomination.

The APES films he made were BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES and CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

                    Just saw this on CNN.com:

'Navarone,' 'Cape Fear' director Thompson dies

LOS ANGELES, California --The British director of the classic war
film "The Guns of Navarone" and the original "Cape Fear" has died in
                    Canada.

                    J. Lee Thompson, 88, died of congestive heart failure in Sooke,
British Columbia, publicist Robert Rooney said.

Thompson had more then 50 films to his name, including two "Planet of
the Apes" sequels and nine Charles Bronson movies. He was nominated
for a best director Oscar for his work on 1961's "Navarone."

Co-producer Pancho Kohner told The Associated Press: "He was a very
large directorial presence. He was a gentleman and such a pleasure to
work with. Everyone who worked with him once wanted to work with him
                    again and again.

"Working with Lee, you were spoiled. He had the uncanny ability to
play the film in his mind. He would know exactly what shot he needed
so there was no wasted effort. He was a talented craftsman."

Kohner said Thompson always liked to stay busy. In 1998 he worked as
a boom microphone operator for the horror film, "Bride of Chucky." He
also played himself in four films.

Kohner collaborated with Thompson to make Bronson action films
including "St. Ives," "10 to Midnight," "Messenger of Death," "White
Buffalo" and what became Thompson's last film, "Kinjite: Forbidden
                    Subjects," in 1989.

Thompson also worked several times with Gregory Peck, perhaps most
notably for 1962's "Cape Fear"; with Anthony Quinn for 1978's "The
Greek Tycoon"; with Yul Brynner in "Taras Bulba" in 1962 and again
the next year in "Kings of the Sun."

Born in Bristol, England, John Lee Thompson was a bantamweight boxer
and a B-29 tailgunner during World War II.

He began his film career at London's Elstree Studios as an editing
assistant and dialogue coach to actors working on Alfred Hitchcock
                    films.

Thompson moved to the United States after "The Guns of Navarone,"
starring Peck and Quinn, came out in 1961.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Penny, a daughter and a
granddaughter. His son, Peter Lee, is deceased.

I liked ZARDOZ! I even cosidered The Brutles as a band name. But there were
quite a few boring bits in it.

Yes, Pat....if you can't put it on a post card, then perhaps you should consider filing it under "Stuff I thought of that nobody but me cares about."  And then burn the file and lose the ashes somewhere.  But seriously, I'd like to take two or three of your posts and make a book out of them.  If I can edit them down to a ten volume set.  Apologies to those of you who have the time and inclination to actually read Pats posts.  He as SOME good ideas in there somewhere...but when Pat goes off on a tangent, it could take days to walk back to the point!

Actually neither.  It's a Sub Shop in Austin. The photo was take by either an old girlfriend or my brother.the guy behind me with the beer signs growing out of his his head is local Artist/Skateboarder Bruce Webb.  We went to a contest held at a ramp in someones backyard.  Here's Gibby Haynes of the of the Butthole Surfer. Not sure if he's reacting to a skater who beefed on the ramp or just clearing his head.

                              3) Were there any Kubricks or Medicoms released in Japan for POTA 2001 and is there a site where they can be viewed?

FORBIDDEN PLANET (dated and kinda hokey, but wonderful still, and
insightful regarding the "monsters of the Id")

I like dated movies!  Though Close Encountes
is a bit tiresome, some films keep getting better.
If something ages well, I don't care how old it is.
I'll even watch Metropolis when it's on sometimes.

                              What about Forbidden Planet?
For me that's right up there with The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of
the Worlds.  Then again I loved The Mole People, aka. the low-buget Jouney to
                              the Center of the Earth.

Yeah, talking about FORBIDDEN PLANET sent me hunting for it on DVD.  I found a copy used at Half.com for just $10.

I like the MOLE PEOPLE too, especially seeing Alfred the Butler all pale and trying to be serious.  I think John Agar kicked his ass, or did a mole man get him, or was it the sunlight?  I'll have to watch that one again.

My fellow Ape fans....maybe you can answer a few questions for me:

                                1) What's become of the other two POTA 2001 kids books that were supposed to be released this summer?

                                2) When is Quick's next book coming out?

                                3) Were there any Kubricks or Medicoms released in Japan for POTA 2001 and is there a site where they can be viewed?

                                Thanks!

the next day faster than the speed of light, where I'll

When I went to that film festaval Kim was at I found a bootleg copy.  I bought it cause the never show it on TV.  The resolution was not good.  A few months later AMC aired it and I taped over it.  It has their logo in the corner but the picture is better.  I re edited it so it ends better too.

I think somekind of special edition DVD of that is on the way.  Hopefully I can just rent it.  I bought THINGS TO COME.  I've watched it once.  Maybe I'll look at it again in a few years.  You gotta be careful what movies you buy.
