CAPE FEAR, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES director dies
Thompson lensed two APES pics
Dateline: Tuesday, September 3, 2002

By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
By: News Editor
Source: Variety

J. Lee Thompson, who directed the classic (and original) stalker-thriller CAPE FEAR, as well as two of the original PLANET OF THE APES films, has died in British Columbia at the age of 88.

Thompson also brought to the screen the classic World War II mission film THE GUNS OF NAVARONE. He was able to bring some war experience to the NAVARONE shoot, as he worked through the war as a tail-gunner on a B-29. The movie snagged an Academy Award nomination.

The APES films he made were BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES and CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

  Hi Dan - -

 1) Didn't know about more kids' books; the video game manual has been postponed; maybe they are giving a wide berth to the Medicoms since they know "Ape" fans are tight with the wallet

 2) no news on the next Quick book; maybe it will be next year, since it was a year between the adaptation and "The Fall"

 3) Medicom has a website that shows the original Kubricks and the 4 POTA2001 versions; Jun Planning did the bigger POTA2001 figures, not Medicom www.medicomtoy.co.jp Etc.                - - - Jeff

My fellow Ape fans....maybe you can answer a few questions for me:

1) What's become of the other two POTA 2001 kids books that were supposed to be released this summer?

2) When is Quick's next book coming out?

3) Were there any Kubricks or Medicoms released in Japan for POTA 2001 and is there a site where they can be viewed?

Thanks!
Dan

I believe the remake of "Forbidden Planet" is at New Line now. Cameron had it the same time as "Apes". You'll probably have to wait for that for a special ed; meanwhile, enjoy the show! - - - Jeff

What about Forbidden Planet?
For me that's right up there with The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of
the Worlds.  Then again I loved The Mole People, aka. the low-buget Jouney to
the Center of the Earth.

Yeah, talking about FORBIDDEN PLANET sent me hunting for it on DVD.  I found a copy used at Half.com for just $10.

I like the MOLE PEOPLE too, especially seeing Alfred the Butler all pale and trying to be serious.  I think John Agar kicked his ass, or did a mole man get him, or was it the sunlight?  I'll have to watch that one again.

I think somekind of special edition DVD of that is on the way.  Hopefully I can just rent it.  I bought THINGS TO COME.  I've watched it once.  Maybe I'll look at it again in a few years.  You gotta be careful what movies you buy.

A bit of trivia about J. Lee Thompson. He was first in line to direct the
original POTA but got involved in "McKenna's Gold" and was unavailable.
"McKenna's Gold" sponsored a filmmaker contest, kind of a way to get free
publicity. Student filmmakers were given the task of doing documentaries
about the production , and the best one would win. The other students did
films about the actors, or the horse wranglers, or whatever. But George
Lucas did a "tone poem" about the desert location, used the allotted money
to make his own film. The producers were impressed and Lucas won the prize
and went on to do his own little sci-fi saga. I remember this from the book
"Skywalking".
What is your favorite J. Lee contribution to POTA. It could be a scene, it
could be an aspect of production, it could be a casting decision. For me it
was the production designs. "Conquest" had an interesting look and I loved
the "Battle" treehouses. Very clever ways to make a pseudo epic on a
pathetic budget. Etc. - - - Jeff

Don't you hate that!  When I got my new one with XP I had a hell of a time trying to find some universal twain downloads that would allow me to keep using my old scanner and the company wasn't much help.  Even now I can't use all the features on the Presto Page Manager.  Next time I buy a scanner.  I won't be buying anything that says Presto, Pagis, Vista, or U-MAX!

Hi Matt

On Ken Taylor's reccommendation, I bought this DVD for my kids.

My four year old (Melissa) will choose this movie first EVERY TIME I
ask waht she would like to watch. I love that because I really like
the movie and it is such a bonus when you can enjoy something your 4
year old watches 1 000 times!

That's an anime audience. I'm talking John and Joan Boxoffice. Whether
"Iron Giant", "Titan A.E.", "Final Fantasy" or even adventure flicks like
"Atlantis" or "Spirit", audiences want their catoons to be funny. Until the
one that breaks the rules. If they do "Jonny Quest" they should do it
live-action. - - - Jeff

A bit of trivia about J. Lee Thompson. He was first in line to direct the

"MacKenna's Gold" sponsored a filmmaker contest, kind of a way to get free

I have MacKENNA'S GOLD on DVD.  It's a crazy western, but some scenes where shot on the same locations as PLANET.  I watched THE GUNS OF NAVARONE yesterday to remember J. Lee.  That was probably his best film.  I recently read a biography of Gregory Peck who said that Thompson was a heavy drinker and scared when he first got the job on NAVARONE, his first big picture.  He also thought MacKENNA'S GOLD was a terrible movie, and I remember from "Skywalking" that Lucas was disgusted by how much money was spent making a stupid western.  Look at how much money he spends now!

'Cape Fear' Director Thompson Dies
British director J. Lee Thompson
has died of congestive heart failure. He was 88. The Bristol, England-born movie-maker passed away on Friday in Sooke, British Columbia, Canada, where he was spending the summer as he did most years. Thompson was a bantamweight boxer and a B-29 tailgunner during World War II before starting his film career in 1950 when he directed Murder Without Crime. He worked with Gregory Peck on several movies including the original Cape Fear movie as well as Anthony Quinn in The Greek Tycoon. Co-producer Pancho Kohner says, "He was a very large directorial presence. He was a gentleman and such a pleasure to work with. Everyone who worked with him once wanted to work with him again and again. Working with Lee, you were spoiled. He had the uncanny ability to play the film in his mind. He would know exactly what shot he needed so there was no wasted effort. He was a talented craftsman." Thompson is survived by his wife of 40 years, Penny, a daughter and a granddaughter.

.htmlHere's the Ain't-it-cool-news.com coverage on Thompson, including the talkbacks

Lee Thompson, director of the award winning GUNS OF NAVARONE and 2 of the original PLANET OF THE APES flicks has died

British director, J. Lee Thompson, 88, who helmed the classic "Men On A Mission" war film THE GUNS OF NAVARONE and the 1962 CAPE FEAR has died of congestive heart failure in Sooke, British Columbia. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Penny, a daughter and a granddaughter.

GUNS is one of ol' Father Geek here's favorite films. Here at Geek Headquarters we have copies of it on DVD, VHS, and on 16mm film. It is quite probably the best "men on a mission" flick ever made. Thompson moved to the United States after "The Guns of Navarone," starring Peck and Quinn, came out in 1961.

The multi tasking Thompson (writer-producer-director-actor) has more then 50 films to his credit, including two of the original "Planet of the Apes" films(Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes), and nine of those great Charles Bronson movies like "The Evil That Men Do" all as director.

He received awards from film fests around the world... was nominated for a Golden Bear at Berlin back in 59 for "Tigar Bay". He has received 4 BAFTA nominations and he was nominated for a best director Oscar for his work on 1961's "Guns of Navarone".

Thompson worked many times with "Guns" star Gregory Peck, perhaps most importantly in 1962's "Cape Fear"; he directed "Navarone's" other star Anthony Quinn for 1978's "The Greek Tycoon"; and he worked with Yul Brynner in the wonderful "Taras Bulba" also in 1962 and again the next year in the fantastic phantasy retelling of Mexican Indian legends with "Kings of the Sun." But despite those great films Father Geek remembers Thompson most for his work that helped to define the Bronson Action film with motion pictures including "St. Ives," "10 to Midnight," "Messenger of Death," "Death Wish 4," "White Buffalo," and the previously mentioned "Evil That Men Do." Thompson's last film, "Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects," was made in in 1989.

J. Lee Thompson was born in Bristol, England; John Lee Thompson was a bantamweight boxer and a B-29 tailgunner during World War II. He began his film career at London's Elstree Studios as an editing assistant and dialogue coach to actors working on Alfred Hitchcock films. He gave us lots of great memories over the years, we will miss him here at Geek Headquarters...

Comment: What is overlooked about CONQUEST, is that it rose above the sliding quality of the rest of the series. The filmmakers were drawing a parallel between the Apes revolt and the Watts Riots in LA. They must have succeeded a bit too well, because they had to go back and trim the movie to get the PG rating it has. Rest In Peace, sir...

Comment: Scooby-Dooku, how can you say that Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the worst in the ape series? Battle definitely takes that dubious honor. Conquest not only has the most interesting storyline of the sequels, but it also darker, more violent, and disburbing. In fact, I think it's the BEST of the Ape sequels. Conquest breathed new life into the series after a steady decline in quality with each subsequent sequel. I don't know if you saw the same film as me, but Conquest surely is one of the better Ape sequels.

He drew from the often unsubtle Roddy McDowall some touching nuances as Caesar. The death of his son in "Battle" required s gentle touch, and "I understand, Mr. McDonald" in "Conquest" still gives me chills. J. Lee Thompson truly mined some gems from the gravel.

Sure, he made a lot of duds, but the man WORKED, and you have to respect that. In an age where hacks like Michael Bay and Brett Ratner can get attitudes about themselves as great artists and make one movie every two years and get paid millions of dollars guys like Thompson just worked as much as they could, occasionally producing truly glorious cinema like THE GUNS OF NAVARONE (THE greatest action-adventure film of all time, thank you very much) or CAPE FEAR. While the guys I mentioned in the subject heading are certainly talented (brilliant, even) I know that as a film-maker-in-training I would much rather sit an hour with a director like Thompson than any of today's 'hot' directors. I can't even BEGIN to imagine the level of experience and knowledge a director like that would be able to impart to a young film-maker. R.I.P. J. Lee Thompson.

Subject: Roddy TV article
.html
.htmlHey, here's neat old article I found.

TV TIMES
BY CECIL SMITH
On the Road to King Kong With
Roddy of the Apes

I have an idea that if Roddy McDowall ever publishes a sequel to "Double Exposure" ("Quadruple Exposure"?) and includes a self-portrait, he will pose with the head of an ape.
After half-a-hundred movies and at least that many plays with memorable performances that ranged from the Welsh lad of the coal mines in "How Green Was My Valley" to the evil magical Mordred of Broadway's "Camelot," plus a parallel career as an internationally famous portrait photographer, McDowall seems destined to be remembered by posterity as Roddy of the Apes.
He doesn't seem to mind. When Will Fowler, the 20th Century-Fox publicity man, asked Roddy if he'd mind posing as an ape for a Thanksgiving layout, he said: "Good Lord, no. I feel like Ava Gardner. Ava always said she spent her first years in Hollywood posing with pumpkins for Thanksgiving and bunny rabbits for Easter. I'll send her a print."
McDowall played the sensitive, intellectual chimpanzee Cornelius in the original movie of "The Planet of the Apes." Cornelius was killed, you may remember, but as Caesar, son of Cornelius, Roddy starred in three of the four "Apes" sequels, including "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes," which he thinks may be the best of the lot (and which CBS will show later this season).
But the four movies were only the beginning. (Roddy missed the fifth movie because he was directing an Ava Gardner film: "Ballad of Tam Lin.") Now that he's appearing every Friday night in the CBS-Fox TV version of Planet of the Apes, which shows every indication of being a smash hit, Roddy may wind up the most renowned ape since King Kong.
If all this baffles you, and if, by chance, you have never been exposed to any of the "apes" movies, you probably should know that the Planet of the Apes is the earth in the distant future (3085 A.D. in the TV version) when it is ruled by apes with humans as lesser forms of animal life, good only for slaves, servants and beasts of burden. Orangutans are rulers of the ape society; gorillas are its lawmen, soldiers and cops; chimps such as Roddy, are the intelligentsia.
Into this future order come tumbling two astronauts from our era, lost in space for hundreds of years--Ron Harper and James Naughton. They are outlaws, sentenced to death by the apes as a threat to the state, because they represent the ancient race of foolish humans who destroyed the earth with their greed and their bombs. Galen, the chimp played by Roddy--apparently a descendant of Cornelius and Caesar--joins the astronauts, feeling that they are unjustly accused.

Roddy McDowall as Galen; intellectual

chimp from Planet of the Apes, on CBS.

Thus, what television gives us are 31st century fugitives fleeing through a primitive society with an ape as their guide. It's all for fun, of course, nonsense and fantasy. And yet at the old Fox ranch in Malibu Canyon where the original films were made and the TV series is filmed, I watched four gorillas on horseback starkly etched against the sky--and it gives you pause, it's frightening.
I left the filming and wandered down into a compound where humans of the Planet of the Apes lived in thatch-roofed, floorless mud huts. In the center of the village was a rude amphitheater, a primitive coliseum with a central arena.
"Gladiators fight there. Humans, of course, for a human audience. The apes feel it vents their hostilities. They work off their aggressions. Interesting idea, isn't it?"
Roddy McDowall was at my elbow. He smiled. At least, the ape face that is literally molded to his flesh smiled.
It can be disconcerting. Roddy was smoking a cigaret through a long holder thrust between his ape lips; he wore a loose sport shirt from which human arms and hands protruded; his tight green pants disappeared into ape feet with long, finger-like toes. Only the brown eyes that gazed at me with some amusement seemed human. And they were distant as if peering from caves.
"Actors have difficulty at first with the face," said Roddy. "They watch the mouth. They must learn to act to the eyes. This--appliance, I suppose you should call it--is an ordeal. I have to get up at 4 a.m. and spend three hours in makeup while they mold it on me before I come to work. It's unbearably hot. I insist on a day off in every script so my flesh can breathe.
"But in it you can fool around with ideas, have some fun with sacred institutions. Not that we go very deep into anything but we can poke little barbs into the complaisance of our society.
"The ape society is very primitive. We have fire and the wheel and gunpowder but the astronauts with their machines are frightening. But they're even more frightening to the humans than they are to the apes…"
Roddy feels the series has little relation to the movies, though the chief orangutan Zaius (Booth Colman) cites the visit of other astronauts at other times. And the gorilla general Urko (Mark Lenard) knows the danger in educated humans.
"They'll think they're as good as we are," he growled. You could see what he meant.

.html
.htmlAnother cool old article.  Kind of sad, too, they never finished the season.

TV MIKE JAHN

Something less than two years ago I spoke with Paul Williams, the pop singer, who was filled with stories of the wonder of his first major acting assignment: playing an orangutan in the film "Battle for the Planet of the Apes."
During the shooting, Mr. Williams rose at 3:30 a.m., then stayed in makeup for three hours. During one such session, the makeup man, Kenny Chase, began discussing at length the merits of what was the favorite drink of both of them, the margarita.
"He drove me crazy talking about margaritas," Mr. Williams said. "By noon I couldn't take it anymore. I was really freaked out. I grabbed Kenny and pulled him into my car."
The car was a 1935 Bugati, "not an inconspicuous car in any case, but here is this Bugati driving down Pico Boulevard at lunchtime with an orangutan behind the wheel. We drove to the Casa Escabar and went inside. Kenny took me by the arm and went up to the maitre d'. He asked him, 'Can we have a table in a dark corner? We want to be alone.'"
Nearly two years later, and more than seven since the whole "Planet of the Apes" phenomenon began, men and women in ape costumes still can be found bouncing around the Hollywood Hills. After five highly successful movies, Pierre ("Bridge Over the River Kwai") Boulle's creation is a successful weekly television series. And, as was the case with four of the five movies, it stars Roddy McDowall in the role of the friendly, science-minded chimpanzee.

One day recently, Mr. McDowall was preparing for shooting. "It's hard to say how it's going," he said. "It isn't like doing a film which you finish, look at, and then have a point of view about. With a TV series you're working so hard and it's being shown at the same time. It's a rather different situation from anything I've been involved with before. We just started the 11th episode this week, and have 13 more to do to complete the season. It's very pleasant. The people are very nice, but it's hard work."
What precisely makes "Planet of the Apes" hard work? "It's a very challenging acting assignment," Mr. McDowall said. "The physicalization is different, because you are dealing somewhat with animal movements. And it's not easy being encased in all that rubber for that length of time and manipulating it so that it's alive."
How long must the actor remain in costume? "I work four days a week," he explained. "Three hours for makeup. After the first hour and a half, before the chin is put on, I eat breakfast. Then I don't get any more solid food until the makeup is off, usually 12 hours later.
"When we started shooting in June, it was boiling. Even now it's still pretty hot. You perspire, and that breaks the glue. I have an air-conditioned motor home which I run into between takes."
The basic principle of the show is that humans nearly destroyed themselves through technology; the apes evolved into the dominant species, and they keep the few remaining and slightly dull-witted humans in a position of servitude. There is a lot of playfulness, such as having an ape speculate about what would happen if you chained an infinite number of humans to an infinite number of typewriters.
(Incidentally, that experiment has been tried, and the result goes by the name of "The Village Voice.")
Mr. McDowall says that despite the Darwinian implications, there has been no rumbling from the Bible Belt. "Even in the movies I don't remember any sort of uproar about that," he says.
The "Planet of the Apes" phenomenon sells not only movies and TV shows, but more than 300 different kinds of items, including toys, games, dolls, books, wastebaskets, t-shirts, doll cut-out books, bubble gum, saucers and plates, transistor radios, and masks, some of them running to $60.
According to Selwyn Rausch, a New York merchandiser who is responsible for this aspect of the "Apes" craze, "by the end of this year we estimate $100-million gross sales in all kinds of 'Ape'-related merchandise.
"Why anyone would want a 'Planet of the Apes' wastebasket I don't know," he says, "but they're selling like crazy."

    Here's what's on IMDB.com today.  I guess J. Lee died last Friday.

Here's the Ain't-it-cool-news.com coverage on Thompson, including the talkbacks

"Jerry, I'm a mean, selfish, son-of-a-@%$! I know you want a story, but I want a killer, and what I want comes first!"

Comment: JLT was one of my favorite directors, even when he was directing dreck like those APES sequels. I had forgotten he did the original CAPE FEAR, which holds up very well and is still run on TV with some frequency. I also loved his long string of Bronson flicks, which were consistent in quality and approach if not necessarily Bronson's best movies.

Comment: Thompson was given pitifully small budgets to work with on the Apes films (and many of his other works later still)and made the best of the disadvantage.

Comment: I looked up to J. Lee Thompson as one of the true old school master craftsmen who could (and often did) direct any type of movie you could throw at him (see also Howard Hawks or John Frankenheimer).

Of course I'm right!  Mel Gibson will never do another Mad Max movie.  He thinks they're dumb flicks and he's now an Academy Award winning director and all that.  If there's a Mad Max 4 he won't be in it.  As for Carpenter, he's proved himself such a bad movie maker and overpaid hack that they'll never trust him with a big-budget movie again.

And I still don't think we'll see an APES II any time soom, maybe not for many years.

So when can fans expect the long awaited return of Mel Gibson as the warrior of the wastelands? Well, that's where things get hazy. According to the report, Miller is holding out hope Gibson communicates, "says 'yes he'll come back." Which hasn't happened yet. Hell, it's only been 17 years since the last one.

.htmlUnable to parlay their small screen success into big box office, perhaps The PowerPuff Girls Movie will have better luck when it invades home video on 11/5. Presented in separate theatrical and "Clean" versions, extras include an audio commentary with the filmmakers, new "cast interviews" with the animated characters from the film, deleted scenes with commentary, two featurettes, additional behind-the-scenes footage, and a "Dexter's Laboratory" short. DVD-ROM extras include four interactive games, a screensaver and wallpaper. Retail is $26.95 each.

I know James can't wait to go rent this at his video store when it comes out.  Those Powerpuff girls will protect him from all those mean boys that will want to beat up the pussy who rents girls cartoons.

I'd say it will all depend on the script.

From interviews I recall, Gibson was pleased with the first 2 movies
but thought "Thunderdome" was too Hollywood.

A good script would even get old Clint back as Dirty Harry.

Hmmm...the car was good (and it was "the last of the V8
interceptors..."). There were a lot of other cool cars in MM2 - like
the 1966 GTO that had a custom Grill and had been converted into
    a "pickup".

I think Mad Max the character also made Mel. He was a cool, tough
guy and an anti-hero, very much like the "Man With No Name" Clint
played in the Spaghetti Western Trilogy. He was "a man's man" and,
until recently (with Signs), most of the films Mel played in where he
portrayed anything but a "hero" in an action flick flopped (except
Gallipoli, but I don't imagine anyone but myself and Ken Taylor saw
    that film from this group).

Even Bravehart...I mean it was a fun movie, but an Academy
    Award....give me a break!

All I do is just sit still for a moment and try to get a feel for the thing from all I know about the movie.  I actually don't think there will be a MIB 3.  Why?  Because although the sequel has made a lot of money, it bombed with the fans and the critics, Tommy Lee Jones probably feels he's getting to old for this shit, the director knows he's tapped out for ideas, and Will Smith is getting a head larger than the moon these days now that he's an "Academy Award nominated best actor."  So, no, I don't think there will be a MIB 3.
There will also be NO sequel to SIGNS.  Movies like SIGNS, no matter how much money they make, don't get sequels.  Are you still waiting for the sequel to E.T.?

So when can fans expect the long awaited return of Mel Gibson as the warrior of the wastelands? Well, that's where things get hazy. According to the report, Miller is holding out hope Gibson communicates, "says 'yes he'll come back." Which hasn't happened yet. Hell, it's only been 17 years since the last one.

What's funny is the sequels to movies that came out the same summer as
POTA2001. They just announced "Legally Blonde 2"; what's her face is getting
$15 million. "Tomb Raider 2" is almost finished shooting. I bet half the
movies that came out that summer are getting sequels. And Rory's right

Lucas did die about 4 years ago. He had his mind transferred into a
mainframe computer at ILM where he is hard at work creating a
completely CGI Episode III. After that he's going to redo the first
3 films and replace Mark Hamil in Empire & Jedi with a CGI version
of Hamil before the car crash.

As good as Thompson was I don't think he would of done as good a job
as Schaffner. Plus if Schaffner hadn't directed POTA; he would of
never gotten Patton which is just too horrible to contemplate.

After doing those ANY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE movies, yeah, you could figure Eastwood would want to get back to DIRTY HARRY, but that bird has flown now.  It wouldn't be credible.  Eastwood's last movie, BLOODWORK, has bombed.  He should now just stick to directing.

My guess is it would have been nothing like the final product. As I
have said before, I think POTA was VERY Speilberg.

On the topic, I saw a DVD last night of the T Zone that was
        interesting.

It was entitled "Valley of the Shadows" and had a similar theme to
POTA. There was a very pretty young lady in it, whose freckles were
still showing on her face. I got a surprise at the end when I saw
the credits - it was Natalie Trundy.

There were some other very POTA things in that episode too.

Schaffner really nailed PLANET, but considering what a good job Thompson did with CONQUEST, I think he might have done just as well, but I'm glad Schaffner did it.   Watch some of MacKENNA'S GOLD and I think you might get some of how PLANET would have played if Thompson had done it.

Remember that Schaffner knew how to get out of Goldsmith what he wanted.  A lot of the mood that PLANET has is in that music.  BENEATH would feel like a very different movie if Goldsmith had done the music -- which I wish he had.

If Goldsmith had done Beneath he wouldn't of been able to do Patton.

No but so what? George Washington was friends with the local dung
        collector in Virginia.

I have to agree with you there Jimbo.  I haven't really enjoyed a Spielberg picture since Jaws!  Not that I haven't tried, but there's always something in there that ruins it for me!  Never fails.

OK That make much more sense. I've often thought of POTA as a big
Twilight Zone episode. All that's missing is Serling at the
beginning saying 'Submitted for your approval; Astronaut George
        Taylor...etc.".

While he is a great technical director there is no depth to anything
he does. His films have some great individual moments but the whole
never seem to add up to the sum of the parts. But what really ticks
me off is that he is constantly ripping something off from better
        directors.

Eastwood's getting to that age where the insurance companies won't cover him. That's why J. Lee said he had to step down as a director and be a producer, the insurance companies wouldn't cover him. Maybe being Clint Eastwood helps. He's Clint Eastwood, he's not going to die.

No, they're all going to do it for Lucas, so he can have the last "Star Wars" and Indy come out with a nice bow and end his career. That's the feeling I get. - - - Jeff

Yeah, J. Lee was going through major alcoholism at the time, that's what I've heard. Plus I don't think he's as good a director as Schaffner. - - - Jeff
