I guess that makes sense that she was tired, since she was up in years. But the impression I got was she wanted to get the hell out of there. Which didn't make any sense. First of all because it was L.A., which wasn't her stomping ground. Plus, the occasion. I'd think she'd want to talk to Roddy and Heston, etc., what a rare opportunity. But the fact is everybody cut out early. Roddy, we now know, knew he was dying. Natalie told me he was in a hurry to get back to his beloved New York. But I just couldn't fathom they were all in such  a hurry to leave. The only one who stayed was Natalie and , of course, it was a celebration of her husband's legacy (she was the keynote speaker). But again I say I don't fathom it. If people were celebrating my work 30 years later I would be so thrilled I'd be there 'til the cows come home. Etc. - - - Jeff

Meet Rory.  He is the exception to that rule.

He reminds me of most of the New Yorkers I have met.

Michael

I'll take that as a compliment.  When I was younger I wanted to live in Manhattan, but it was not to be.

Oh, and thanks, Mike, for the comic.  It came today.  I didn't remember any of it, but it's fairly plain the artist was working with stills from the film.  I'll try to get some pages scanned soon.

No, the merchandising swamp came more between BATTLE and the TV Show.  It was the first network showings of the movies and the big ratings they got that started the ball rolling.  By '76 it was pretty much over, then came STAR WARS and most everybody forgot POTA for nearly a decade.

I think we need to give Patrick a subject to discuss when he does arrive.  How about this one:  Patrick, what physical changes would you have to make in the modern day great apes for them to have cognitive thought at our level and the ability to speak human language?

I find this stuff very interesting.  I'm sure Patrick has given it much thought, but then he did cheat with that Roswell Alien theory.  Come on, Patrick, we made the apes of Boulle's allegory (or satire if you insist), so how did we genetically manipulate them?

I think we need to give Patrick a subject to discuss when he does arrive.  How about this one:  Patrick, what physical changes would you have to make in the modern day great apes for them to have cognitive thought at our level and the ability to speak human language?

I find this stuff very interesting.  I'm sure Patrick has given it much thought, but then he did cheat with that Roswell Alien theory.  Come on, Patrick, we made the apes of Boulle's allegory (or satire if you insist), so how did we genetically manipulate them?

Sorry James, but you are WAY too nice and friendly to be a New Yorker....now
tell us the truth, are you really and Aussie? Is that you Mel? Russell?
Kylie? You can tell me...

Seriously though, the few days I spent in NY in early 1984, there were not a
whole lot of friendly, caring people there...and there were a whole lot of
rude, obnoxious ones. The nicest guy I met was a negro. He called me up a
dark alley to ask for a light (and yes, I went!). Turned out he lit up the
best looking joint I ever saw and we talked for ages. Oh yeah, and the
cabbie was cool too. For $20, he took my family all round NY for about 5
hours.

From what I hear people in the NY region have changed in the last year or
so.

That's OK James, I'm just kidding (trying to lighten things up a touch).

We have had a lot of media coverage too and most of us Aussies are shit
scared about the potential of the alleged nuclear capacity of Iraq.

And Kim's passing, well it sure puts further from our reach any dreams of
her appearing in a decent sequel or contributing an audio track to a DVD.
And on a more personal level it is very sad.

I have to confess that I never used to notice them and if you'd asked
me before last year where the WTC was, I wouldn't even have been able
to tell you the country never mind the city. I didn't know the first
thing about the NYC skyline. Now it seems however that every other
film I watch features them and I can't help noticing them now. Hell, I
even noticed them popping up in "Zombie Flesh Eaters" when I watched
it recently.

"Zombie Flesh Eaters"?  I've never heard of that one.  Don't feel too -- whatever you feel -- about the WTC, I never really liked them and I resented it that they took the crown, if only for a few years, from the Empire State Building as the world's tallest building.  But now that they're gone it is strange.  Tonight is the season premiere of "The Sopranos."  They showed the two towers at the beginning of every show.  I wonder what comment they'll make.  I'm for rebuilding the towers just as they were, a sort of in your face statement to the terrorists that they failed, but that won't happen.

With all the arguing and competing designs about what to put there, it'll be at least 10 years before anything at that sight gets completed.  Which is kind of ridiculous when you realize that the Empire State Building was built in 14 months, and that was 70 years ago.

Yep, it is the one that Rory pointed out (I think "Zombie Flesh
Eaters" was the UK release title, and definitely the best in my
opinion - it's also been released as Zombi, Zombie 2, and probably a
      few others).

As for if it's "good" or not... if you like zombies, gore films or
Lucio Fulci films, then yes. And as all three of these are among my
guilty pleasures, I love it! (It was one of the original "video

Yes, I have that one on DVD, under the title Zombie.  The fight scene between the zombie & the shark was worth the price alone.
And, it's another movie that features the Twin Towers (in the beginning).

      13. And since the show aired on Friday's, we could have celebrated it by
watching it this past Friday the 13th. In fact, we can reinact the whole run
of the show just by watching the DVD episodes in order on consecutive Fridays.

I wonder if the date of the show's premiere had anything to do with its

I agree - and paint two fingernails on so they look like an "up

A bit of added security and they would be fine. I mean if they want

Yeah, that's right, it was the 13th.  I thought today was Saturday for a while there.   Anyway, I watched episode one today, so maybe I'll watch episode two next Friday.  This year is the same calendar used for the year 1974.

Bonham Carter and Burton Planning To Wed?
      Helena Bonham Carter
is so smitten with director lover Tim Burton even work commitments on different sides of the world can keep them apart. The actress - who counts Kenneth Branagh amongst her former flames - began dating the Batman movie maker after they met on the set of 2001 flick Planet Of The Apes . And - even though their busy schedules mean they are forced to spend time apart - Helena insists the romance is still going strong, and even hints of a wedding before long. Speaking before the premiere of her new movie, she says, "He's in America working at the moment so he can't here but we are still very much together." But the actress was adamant if she and Burton do plan to make their relationship legally binding - the press won't be the first to find out. Helena adds, "If anything is happening on that front, I'll tell my friends first."

Skyscrapers tend to be surrounded by other skyscrapers, so AA guns would just result in other building being hit, instead of the target one.

She must have a thing for people who direct her in bad remakes of sci-fi

Yeah, I don't get the whole move on Burton's part except that Bonham-Carter comes from old money or something.  Lisa Marie looks like she's much better in bed, but maybe she was a gold-digger.  Then again, I suspect something else about Burton and his little dog, but nuf said.

Yes it has been a bad week, and I can understand that people have

          Hope your family is well.

Lisa Marie and Burton split up at least a year ago. Burton is now
supposed to be with Helena Bonham Carter (aka chimpette Ari).

Generalizations about cities are really about generalizations on people.  It depends on who you meet.  They say the French are rude.  I've been to Paris twice and it was the Americans who were rude.

The French were so rude in Calais, I didn't even make it to Paris.  If it hadn't been for some Scottish girls who spoke French I wouldn't have even been able to get a room.  You think since most of their income is from English tourists from Dover a few of them might learn the language.  But I suspect they knew it already.  Sure there are Rude Americans as well, though many are simply frustrated into a momentary lapse of manners.
