Yeah, that Dr. Hasslein got no respect.  Hey, wait a minute. . . . Why do we assume that the Dr. Hasslien of ESCAPE is the same one who came up with the Hasslien Theory?   Maybe it was his grandfather who was the Hasslien of the theory?

Yeah, I mean Adam and Eve works in the Bible cos nobody was game to
ask who Cane and Abel were humping (or they would have been burned at
the stake).

Hmmm... If they were the first people, then who were all those people
dwelling in the land of Nod? Cavemen? Apes?

She covers his mouth because it's the apes that speak and she doesn't like hearing voices, but the writing in the sand thing. . . give me a break.  Not even Boulle would have Nova doing that in the book.  Hey, maybe this is a good question to ask Linda Harrison.  Somebody go post it on her website and let's see if she answers.

Where in the world does Joe Farrell live?  How old is he?  Did he see PLANET in '68 or first found APES from seeing the TV series?  Why isn't he in this group?

Yeah, she probably doesn't even remember her directions for that scene.  The last beating she got from Dick wiped it from her mind, that and all the antidepressants since '74.

WHAT?! That's Joe's pride and joy! He always used to say, "Do you know how
hard it is to find a sucker that hasn't been eaten? From the '70's?!" He was
proud of that more than anything in his collection. Maybe he got
married. - - - Jeff

The bullet didn't even go through his neck!  What calibre were those gorilla rifles?  You'd think they'd be .45s, but that would have taken Taylor's head off at the neck.  Probably just .22s.

The props themselves were built on the M1 carbine which fires a 30-30 round.  Not quite a Colt 45 Long but more powerful than the .45 Auto.  It was far less powerful than the full power 30-06 rifle cartridge that the original M1 Garand rifles fired.  The M1 carbines were meant as an intermediate solution for officers and noncoms who wanted more firepower than was offered by the Colt .45 Auto 1911 sidearms and Thompson sub-guns they usually carried without having to lug a heavy rifle about.

He doesn't like to be bothered by pesky "Ape" fans. He wants to be referred to as "Ape-O-Holics Anonymous" (oh, there's a picture of his collection in Eric Greene's book, maybe even the sucker). He's in his late 30's and he went college with director Bryan Singer (X-Men) and they traveled cross country back East to visit home during college. Singer is a big Lucas/Spielberg fan and when Joe mentioned POTA he said, "Oh, that paved the way for "Star Wars". But he moved, so I can't contact him. - - - Jeff

That depends on what codec was used to create the video file. Could be you
have the correct codec to see it but the others don't.

Sounds about right. Where can I download the poper codecs?

Try here: http://www.moviecodec.com/

If the file is a DiVX format install the free version of DiVX pro here: http://www.divx.com/software/ - (If you want retail version just google it, not hard to find.)

If all else fails, let me know and I can send you a universal codec pack that works on 99 percent of all movie files.

Joe is cool. At a convention he had a POTA coloring display that was filled with POTA coloring books, all mint. It was a warehouse find. There were all 4 of them or how many there were. And he gave me one for free after I helped him take some stuff to the car. He just said pick one. I got the one with Zauis and the gorillas firing that I had as a kid. Mint. Beats a sucker any day. But he does get kinda Howard Hughes when it comes to "Apes". - - - Jeff

Yeah but there's a road from Ape City to the cornfields and it's flat compared to the Mountains that they had to either walk over or around.  And besides... The Map Is CRAP!  And that's my rulin', By Gobs!

It's possible it's the same field. But remember earlier in the film
Zaius states that the humans had migrated to the apes fields.
Also, on the map there are two rivers in the south that flow in to
the sea. The northern most one could be the one Taylor questions
Cornelius about on the cliff. And there is a shot of them going down
the left side of the cliff (which would be the northern bank) on
horseback and then riding along the left (or northern) bank to the
coast.

Anyone know what happened to the missing scene of Zira and Lucius meeting a guard on the wagon as in this pic?

This scene was shot (according to Lou Wagner [Lucius]) and I first saw this photo on card 38 of the Topps set, then later in Famous Monsters of Filmland, where the actor playing the gorilla was identified as Bob Lombardo, which would make the gorilla the photographer at the hunt or Marcus, Head of Security Police.  The object over Zira's and Lucius' head is the structure on the causeway across the lake in front of Ape City, where the Lawgiver statue was.   I don't know if Fox still has this scene in its vaults but I hope so.  One thing we can tell from the movie is that this scene was cut before Goldsmith scored the picture.

For those who've never read this scene in the screenplay or comic adaptation, here it is:

EXT. ANIMAL COMPOUND - MED. SHOT - NIGHT

A horse-drawn caged wagon (like that used in the hunt) stands near the building. Zira waits at the rear of the wagon. Lucius, Taylor and Nova emerge from a doorway or archway and join her. Zira notes Nova's presence with disapproval. They speak in undertones.

                                                                    ZIRA
                                                                (to Lucius)
I told you not to bring the other one.

                                                                  LUCIUS
                                                       He wouldn't leave her.

                                                                    ZIRA
                                                              (with a sigh)
                                                     All right...
                                                            (to the humans)
                                                     Get in...hurry.  Put this on.

                                                                  TAYLOR
                                                     Listen-

                                                                     ZIRA
Taylor -- just keep quiet and we may get
away with this. Remember that men all
                                             look alike to most apes.

Taylor and Nova comply, climbing into the cage. Lucius closes the tailgate. Lucius and Zira move to the front of the wagon and climb aboard. Lucius takes the reins. As they move off:

            WIPE TO:

EXT. LAKE AND CAUSEWAY - LONG HIGH ANGLE SHOT - NIGHT

As previously established, the animal compound is on the outskirts of Apetown. The abductors must cross the causeway on their route of escape. In the distance, near the gazebo, we can see the lights of several torches. The caged wagon rolls into scene and out onto the causeway.  At the same time a mounted gorilla leading two pack animals appears on the far side of the causeway, coming toward CAMERA. Lucius stops the wagon.

CLOSE TWO SHOT - LUCIUS AND ZIRA - ON THE WAGON

                                         LUCIUS
                                                           (apprehensively)
                                         Gorilla hunters ...

                                                                  ZIRA
Keep moving. We can't turn back now.

            BOOM SHOT - THE CAUSEWAY

As the mounted hunter nears the wagon, we can see two bodies slung across the backs of the pack animals.

FLASH SHOT - TAYLOR AND NOVA - IN WAGON CAGE

            They look out at:

THE PASSING HORSES - FROM THEIR P.O.V.

The bodies on the horses are naked human corpses.

MED. LONG SHOT - THE CAUSEWAY - REVERSE ANGLE

In immediate f.g., near the gazebo, is a similar wagon.  It has lost a wheel, and its rear axle lies on the edge of the causeway.  Two naked primitive males can be dimly seen within the cage. Four or five armed gorilla hunters stand near the wagon: two of them carry torches; the others are passing a jug from hand to hand.  The leader of the Hunt Club, still on horseback, holds up his hand as the lab wagon approaches.
                                                                LEADER
                                                                  Hold it!

Lucius obeys. The hunters on foot swarm around his wagon as their leader calls authoritatively:

                                                                LEADER
Ah, Doctor Zira! Our wagon broke down! I'm
afraid we'll have to commandeer yours.

304 CLOSER ANGLE - THE LAB WAGON

as the Hunt Club Leader rides over, recognizing the animal psychologist.
                                                                 ZIRA
You can't! I've two sick humans in the
cage. We're taking them to the chief vet
                                        at the zoo ...

                                                              LEADER
                                                 (indicating his own wagon)
We bagged two live ones today. I'll have
to ask you to take them along.

He moves to the rear of the wagon.

                                                                  ZIRA
                                                  (following him; frantically)
No, no, my animals are diseased... Leave
them alone!  They're diseased, I tell you!

Lucius jumps down and runs toward the rear of the wagon.

REVERSE ANGLE - REAR OF WAGON

The hunters have opened the tailgate and are shining their torches on the humans. They sound ready for sport.

                                                             FIRST HUNTER
Give him a taste of fire!

One of the hunters points his torch at Taylor, who, quite naturally, shrinks back as Lucius runs into scene.

                                                                   LUCIUS
                                                   Stand back! He's dangerous!

                                                             FIRST HUNTER
                                                   Why?

                                                                     ZIRA
He's rabid! His bite is fatal!

                                                             FIRST HUNTER
                                                   You serious?

                                                                  LUCIUS
                                                   You would die in agony!
                                                   (with appropriate gestures)
                                                    Frothing at the mouth!

The hunters fall back. Lucius promptly locks the tailgate and he and Zira run back to the front of the wagon. Lucius snaps the reins and the wagon moves off. The hunters follow it a few paces, pausing near their mounted leader.

                                    FIRST HUNTER
They treat those animals better than they treat us.

                                                                LEADER
I still say the only good human is a dead human.

The fugitives' wagon recedes beyond the gazebo, as we:
            DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. AN OPEN RANGE - LONG SHOT - DAWN

The horse-drawn wagon is silhouetted-against the dawn light, bumping across a semi-arid plain studded with mesquite and sage. (This SCENE can be SHOT either on the Navajo reservation near Page or on the Ranch).
[It was shot at the ranch.]

            DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. SAVANNA (OR CULTIVATED FIELDS) - LONG SHOT - MORNING

This is the same area described on page 24, where the hunt occurred.
[Got that, James?]  As the wagon rolls along a dirt track, the tall grasses of the savanna (or cultivated field) can be seen in b.g.

CLOSE TWO SHOT - TAYLOR AND NOVA - IN WAGON CAGE

Taylor is dozing, but the girl is alert and nervous. She peers out at the field, apparently recognizing or remembering this terrain. She nudges Taylor, waking him.

EXT. GROVE OF WILD FRUIT TREES - LONG PANNING SHOT - DAY

This, too, is the location described on page 24. CAMERA PANS with the wagon as it rolls into the grove and HOLDS on three horses. Cornelius sits astride one horse; the other two nags are heavily burdened with packs and saddlebags.

310 CLOSER ANGLE - THE GROVE - FAVORING CORNELIUS

He dismounts as Zira and Lucius jump down from the wagon and hurry toward him. Cornelius and his fiancee embrace and kiss lightly, ape-fashion.

                                                            CORNELIUS
                                                            How did it go?

                                                                 ZIRA
There was one bad moment -- some hunters stopped us.

OK and what does the script say about the map?

            Here it is. . . .

                                                                      ZIRA
                                                                   (reading)
                                                         'Do you have maps?'

Cornelius puts the paper plane on his desk, crosses to a wall map designed like a window shade. He pulls it down Taylor and Zira join him at the map.

            CLOSE ON MAP

It's not a map of the whole planet, of course, but only of that portion known to the apes. Therefore it has the antique and fragmentary aspect of a map drawn by some Babylonian cartographer. A swatch of blue at the right margin indicates a sea.
[Read it and weep, James, "A swatch of blue at the right margin indicates a sea."  That would be the Atlantic Ocean, and it proves that the filmmakers didn't want to give away too much, so they had the map made sideways with the ocean on the bottom.] In the southwest quadrant are the "greenbelts" of the ape civilization, looking on the map like jade stones strung on crescent-shaped necklace. Rubyidots in the lade indicate ape communities. ["The southwest quadrant."  See, as I've told you all, esp. you James, the apes live southwest of the New York area, FAR southwest, and the lake, the 'inland sea' is northeast of them and is, I contend, Chesapake Bay.] The northwest quadrant, colored brown, is apparently uninhabited. East of the green belts is a patch of green savanna, and next to it the darker green of a jungle. The eastern quadrants are rendered in yellow, and except for a blue lake, appear to be lifeless desert and barren mountain. This area is marked FORBIDDEN ZONE. [The "eastern quadrant," The Forbidden Zone, would be the entire east coast all the way UP TO New York.  This area of the US would have been heavily nuked.] Using a pointer, Cornelius orients Taylor, indicating a red dot in the middle of the green belt.

                                                                 CORNELIUS
                                                   We are here ...
                                                               (moving pointer)
                                                   You were captured about here.

Taylor studies the map, then pointing at the lake in the eastern desert, he goes into a brief charade, dramatizing the astronauts' landing and trek.

                                                                      ZIRA
                                                     (interpreting his movements)
You fell in the water here? ... you came
ashore ... you marched across the desert ...
the mountains ... many days and nights ...
                                             and reached the jungle.

            Taylor nods, smiles gratefully.

                                                               CORNELIUS
                                                                    (flatly)
                                                       Out - of - the - question!.

Taylor slams his fist against the wall in frustration.

You're reading a lot into this. It clearly states that the Fobidden
Zone is in the east. And if the sea is in the right margin its in the
east too. Nowhere does it say the map is held sideways. As to the ape
city being in the southwest quadrant that is where Cornelius points
to it on the map and is not inconsistant with ape city being in
Central New Jersey (which is Southwest of NYC last time I looked.

At this point I think we should just agree to disagree.

opinions of others too.  I wonder if they are being arrogant?

Actually didn't Kim say she didn't talk much to Maurice?   Hey, did you guys know that Maurice Evans was rumored to be gay?

            I can't believe T skips those scenes!

I love the moutains and the desert, and the ocean too.  Caves, you name it.  But I don't have the time to watch all the movies I haven't seen much less the ones I have.  Slow equals boring in film.  Perhaps we've all been brainwashed by CNN and MTV, but my attention span has never been very good.  If I want desert I'll go there.

That gorilla rides right up to him -- I'd say that's pretty direct.  It misses the bone, the vein, the artery, but its close enough to the larynx to take that out of commission for weeks, but he doesn't choke on his own blood. Talk about a magic bullet.

You'd think they'd be .45s, but that would have taken Taylor's head off at the neck.  Probably just .22s.  Maybe the apes didn't know how to make the ammo larger.

.22s sound like high powered airguns and wouldn't be dropping humans like that. Look at the magazines on them their 30-30s A standard carbine load.  Like you'd find in a Winchester 32-20, 30-30, 38-40, 44-40, & .45 LC Here's a pic showing the size difference between a 32-20, more common in handguns, and the 30-30 cartridges.

              Thanks,

              It opened just fine.

There is another item with VERY similar graphics...can't recall which
(I haven't played with my toys for a while...).

Yes, I do remember this one from when I was a kid.

It was one of the few items I did NOT buy (the KITE was another) - I
just was never into craft toys. There was a shelf full of them and
              they never moved.

These lingered on the shelf until the early 90s in our "Big W" store.

OH, if I had more foresight!

I did have some idea with the Megos...I always wanted to keep a mint
set so I bought some extras (good I did because the others fell
apart)...so I opened the spare set!!!!

Shoulda bought an EXTRA spare set to keep mint....

There was a bike shop sround the corner that still had the kites in
1993!!!! They were selling for around the same price too.

These are the types of places the REAL gems appear, not eBay!

Where did you buy this from?

Have you ever paid a fortune for a RARE item, only to find some
bastard has uncovered a CASE full of them?

              Michael

His ebay ID is WAYCOOLSTUFF2000 or something similar.

Smolen is the guy currently selling the lollipop card.

I think Joe might be getting a bit frightened by the awfully low
              prices being fetched on ebay.

Either that or he has a better one (he often finds a better condition
item then sells his own to finance buying the better one).

There are only a few mor hard hitting collectors I know of on eBay -
one is called "little italy" (who I think has changed his/her name -
possibly to the high bidder at the moment).

              Then there is "GoApeBilly".

Then there is yourself, Ken and me.

The latter 2 are trying to kick the habbit I think.

So currently, after these 6 people have any said item, only greedy
sellers who are unaware that the aforementioned have an item will pay
              good money for them.

And don't forget pages and pages of unofficial shirts!!! And full
pages of those compared o tiny photos of the REASL collectibles.

What a wasted opportunity!!!! My mom has a better collection than
Sauseville, and she would have done a lot more research....

Hey apefan23 (sorry, what's your name again?), wanna join me in
              making a POTA collectible website?

I just wanna see everything that was made before I die! There was a
time when I wanted to own everything, but I am compromising as I get
              older.

If enough of us get together and photograph our collections, it can
              be done.

Why?  Why should I respect a prop?  I doubt there was nearly as much thought put into it by the people that actually made the thing, as this group puts into trying to figure out answers from the damned thing, when there isn't any!  I'm starting to think that Rizzo and Pinkus and Hoknes and the rest are on to something here.  I have a life.  And I spend far too much of it waiting for map analysis downloads.  As for skipping bits, perhaps you forgot, as much as I love apes, I'm a Kim Hunter fan.  Most of my collection isn't Apes related.

There you go Snapperhead.  This is what the prop dept. was working from, with the directors approval, of course.  That is all the thought that was put into the map.  Don't waste yourself trying to read things into it.  You'll turn into Patrick.  No offense Pat.

In the Southwest quadrant are the "greenbelts" of the ape civilization, looking on the map like jade stones strung on crescent-shaped necklace. Ruby dots in the land indicate ape communities.  The Northwest quadrant, colored brown, is apparently uninhabited. East of the green belts is a patch of green savanna, and next to it the darker green of a jungle. The eastern quadrants are rendered in yellow, and except for a blue lake, appear to be lifeless desert and barren mountain.

Oh yeah!  I've talked to WAYCOOLSTUFF2000.  He was kind of a dick.  After I lost the auction for the door panel posters (which for over $1000 each I was glad I got out bid), he contacted me and wanted to know if I had the e-mail address of the person who won them.  When I told him I didn't he seemed pissed.   I didn't like him.

Yeah, I know that about you, T.  Charming.  Well, I'm a PLANET fan.  So what?

No, the Hunt Leader is Norman Burton.  He's the one during the hunt that rides up and drops his arm to signal the spring of the nets, he's the middle gorilla when the three gorilla hunters get their photo taken, and he's the gorilla that asks Dr. Zaius "What's Dr. Zira trying to prove?"   Marcus, Head of Security Police, isn't in the script and seems to be an invention of the Fox publicity department.  However, an actor named Bob Lombardo played the gorilla photographer, the gorilla that asked that "No. 9 be ready in five minutes" to Julius, and identifies himself as security police to Zira after Taylor is up in the net.  I'm not really sure that's the same actor in the makeup for the "Marcus" photo used in the ads.  Maybe it is Bob Lombardo, but I don't know.  That photo is a detail from a picture taken at the cave scene.

The latter 2 are trying to kick the habbit I think.

I was very happy when I got on eBay a Topps box from the original film cards.  I paid $75 for it.  Sausville told me he paid $95 for his.

                      Hi Tim

I would start simple with descriptions of items and links at first.

Actually, I already have. We started with AUDIO/VISUAL stuff.

My first obstacle is HOW to categorize.

I have seen different people try different things but I have never
been entirely happy with the results.

I'll see if I can dig some stuff up.

Then, ultimately, I would try to achieve a comprehensive collector's
web site which would categorize items, list them, show images, track
prices they have sold for and who sold / bought them, allow sellers
to advertise their details if they have an item for sale...etc.

But I would not rush in (I mean, look at POTA 2001...yes, they
planned it forever, but they didn'y even have time to relise the
script was a turd before they finished filming!).

It would require stages of development and careful planning.

                      Michael

That's cool! Thanks, Matt. The lighting makes the toy look like something
