.htmlNo I don't have a problem with people doing that when they want to. Of course
there will be a lag time between when you send them to me and when I put them
up (sometimes longer than a day). Also if I think a picture sucks I won't
put in the collection. I don't try to save every pic that gets posted here
because the quality of stuff is more important to me than the quantity.

"Waycool" is Joe Farrell.
Now you have his email address, I suggest you contact him and

Ask him about the pogs!

| Subject: Outta site! |
.htmlplanetoftheapesonline 's message board is shut down for maintenance. Boy,
was I going to give it to Fox! Anyway, I did a websearch about Fox shutting
down sites and I guess their big campaign was '99-2000. I remember that,
when they were hitting sites on "The Simpsons", "X-Files", "Buffy",
"Millennium" and "King of the Hill". I remember wondering at the time why
they were'nt hitting POTA sites, since their big movie was about to go into
production. Apparently they calmed down for a while, now they're back at it.
There's a "Simpsons" site called www.nohomers.com that shut down Aug. '02
after 3 years of letters from Fox. There's a page where Fox responds to the
anger their actions have generated at
http://www.fox.com/community/askfox/answer/.htmlbr>
Basically, they say they appreciate the fans, bla, bla, bla, and only shut
down sites that break cardinal rules such as:
using photos, images and sounds not approved for distribution
those that remove Fox's copyright or don't make it clear who the owner is
copying or altering stuff from official websites
denigrating the program or it's actors
using Fox images for commercial reasons
carrying advertising
offering unlicensed merchandise
I don't know what they wrote to the site's owner, Mike, but as Rory said,
why are they picking on a POTA site now? - - - Jeff

Doesn't Mike ask for money contributions to keep his site going? Maybe all he has to do is call his site something else.
Will Terry Hokens site be next?

.html Pogs were big about five years ago. It's just a fancy name for milk bottle
tops. Back before milk bottles had plastic top they were made from
cardboard. The new generation had pictures and designs on then and had never
been anywhere near a bottle of milk. Kids would play tidily winks with them
for keeps like marbles. My nephew used to collect them. They were soon
replaced by Pokemon cards. <.html

Let's see if Fox keeps to that promise. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" should be on the schedule and, I hope, "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
Two of my faves?

For Chimps, Some Space To Live Out Golden Years
La. Retirement Sanctuary to House Ex-Research Animals
By a Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 1, 2002; Page A19
Finally, after more than four decades of public service, it's retirement time for Rita.
The 47-year-old chimpanzee, brought to the United States from Africa by the Air Force in the 1950s, is a prime candidate for a new retirement home to be built near Shreveport, La. The facility is expected to cost at least $35 million, most of it federal money, to build and operate over a 10-year period.
Under a $19 million contract awarded yesterday by the National Institutes of Health, Chimp Haven Inc., a nonprofit group based in Shreveport, will operate "a sanctuary system for all chimpanzees retired from federal biomedical facilities," the group announced. In addition, Chimp Haven said it plans to contribute $6 million in matching funds.
NIH said the sanctuary "will provide lifetime care for federally owned or supported chimpanzees that are no longer needed for biomedical research."
The chimpanzee retirement community is to be built on 200 acres of forested land donated by Caddo Parish, La., and is scheduled to open by spring 2004. NIH said it also plans to provide about $10 million to fund construction of the sanctuary, including administrative offices, infrastructure, utilities, an education center, quarantine facilities and what Chimp Haven described as "indoor and outdoor housing" for 200 chimpanzees. Eventually, the sanctuary is to be expanded to accommodate more than 300 chimps.
The sanctuary will be run by a staff of about 25 people, including a full-time veterinarian, and will feature "non-climbable walls" and moats to keep the chimps from leaving their forested preserves, said Linda Brent, president of Chimp Haven.
"After these chimpanzees have endured years in medical research laboratories, society owes them a tremendous debt," said Larry Hawk, president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Proponents of the project said it will save taxpayers money in the long run because the cost of keeping chimpanzees in research labs is about double the cost per animal of harboring them in the sanctuary. According to chimpanzee advocates, there are 1,300 to 1,600 federally owned or supported chimpanzees in biomedical laboratories, including 600 to 900 who are eligible for retirement because they are no longer used for research.
Most of the federally owned chimps are kept in labs in Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Fewer than 40 are in the Washington area, and none of those are now eligible for retirement because they are still being used for research into infectious diseases, said John Strandberg, director of comparative medicine at NIH's National Center for Research Resources.
Chimpanzees have been used to develop a vaccine for hepatitis B and for research into the virus that causes AIDS. Starting in the early 1980s, they were "aggressively bred" in the United States for AIDS research, but they turned out to be of limited use because they did not get sick from the virus, Brent said.
Among those formerly used for breeding is Rita, who was one of the original chimps brought in by the Air Force for the U.S. space program. She was kept at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico until 1969, then sent to a lab in San Antonio.
"She's real pretty," said Brent, who works at the lab.
Since the animals, an endangered species with a lifespan of up to 60 years, are not euthanized or used for "terminal studies" that can result in their death, many live out their days in 5-by-5-foot cages, she said.
"Some of them have never climbed a tree or walked on grass before." For them, Brent said, the sanctuary means "giving back to the chimps a little bit of their own natural history."

Chimps get a retirement home and support for rights
By David Arnold, Globe Staff, 10/1/2002
CAMBRIDGE - They feel love and loss. They can paint, communicate in sign language, and fight. And they share 98.7 percent of human DNA. Yet chimpanzees have fewer rights than a brain-dead human. Thousands of them are used in medical research, kept in zoos, or work in circuses, with no law protecting them from being euthanized when their work life is over.
But in a sign of how attitudes toward nonhuman primates are changing, the federal government announced plans yesterday for an unprecedented retirement home for 800 chimps formerly used in research. On the same day, eminent researchers and lawyers held a first-ever meeting at Harvard Law School on how to give chimps more legal rights, including status that might get them out of the labs and animal acts altogether.
''Legal rights grow out of wrongs,'' Alan Dershowitz, a professor of law at Harvard, told several hundred people in Ames Courtroom in Austin Hall yesteday. ''And there is no question that this animal has suffered pervasive wrongs over many centuries.''
Any law would probably protect ''the bodily integrity'' and ''the primary interests'' of chimps, panelists suggested. As a result, there would probably be far more restrictions on the estimated 1,300 chimpanzees used for medical experiments nationwide, a notion that alarms some biomedical researchers.
''Chimpanzees have been pivotal to our understanding of hepatitis C and developing a vaccine for hepatitis B,'' said Suzette Tardis, associate director of the Southwest National Primate Reseach Center in San Antonio, one of the country's eight primate centers funded by the National Institutes of Health.
''Without chimpanzees, which do not die during the tests, there would be no way to study the disease, other than in humans,'' she said.
However, chimpanzees don't play nearly the research role they did in the early 1960s, when they were space pioneers before John Glenn or in the early stages of the AIDS epidemic when they were thought to be an ideal model for studying the disease. The declining use of chimpanzees partly reflects the expense of caring for them, but it also results from growing public sentiment that chimps should not be used for trivial research, such as testing the safety of oven cleaners.
Many of the 10 guest speakers at yesterday's symposium at Harvard stressed that biomedical researchers have never tried to get along without chimps in their research, so they don't really know how difficult it will be. They admit, however, that once a law protects chimps others may press for protection of other animals that play a larger scientific role that may be harder to replace.
''It can be a very slippery slope: Chimps today, fireflies tomorrow?'' said Steve Wise, an animal ethicist at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, a lawyer, and author of ''Drawing The Line,'' a 322-page book published earlier this year that makes the case for animal rights.
Wise contends that legal protections from harm should be made available first to beings with ''realistic autonomy,'' acting with a sense of self and living as if life means something. He was disinclined to speculate what animals might qualify for protection, aside from the great apes, such as the chimpanzee. The firefly, he said, would not.
The near-human characteristics of the chimp lay at the heart of primate expert Jane Goodall's landmark study begun in Tanzania almost a half-century ago. Yesterday, she spoke of chimps named Mel and Spindle and a heart-rending scene of compassion in the jungle in which the animals, both orphans from an early age, essentially helped each other cope with the loss of their mothers.
Yesterday, NIH announced a $24 million grant over 10 years that will allow Chimp Haven, an animal sanctuary in Louisiana, to shelter some 800 chimpanzees that have survived medical experiments.
Dr. Peter Theran, a vice president at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is on the board of directors for Chimp Haven, a 200-acre forested facilty near Shreveport that is slated to become the nation's first convalescent home for chimpanzees.
''It's really exciting,'' Theran said. The NIH advisory group ''worked seven years to find this perfect spot, a rainforest where the weather is great and protected from hurricanes,'' he said.
Other nations have taken stronger legal steps to protect chimps in research. New Zealand, England, and Germany all have laws protecting chimpanzees from medical experimentation. But the gesture was easy to make, speakers said, because those countries had almost no chimps in research.
David Favre, a law professor at the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University, said the law should be modeled on current animal cruelty laws and be prosecuted case by case, rather than completely banning the use of chimps in experimentation.
One of the more emotional moments in the symposium came when a member of the audience asked speakers whether they would oppose animal research into a disease that might be killing their child. One panelist noted that chimps are an endangered species, while humans are overpopulated, suggesting that the chimps ought not to be sacrified for people's sake.
''Why take the life of an endangered species to make an overpopulated species even more overpopulated?'' said Roger Fouts, a researcher at Central Washington University who worked on Project Washoe, named for the first nonhuman animal to acquire a human language.
''Now wait a minute, Roger!'' Goodall cut in. ''As a mother, I would do anything, sacrifice anything, to save my child. That's part of being a mother.''
The subject was dropped without elaboration, as speakers moved on to other topics.
Reached by telephone, Mary Hanley, executive vice president of the National Association for Biomedical Research, said that ''chimpanzees play a vital role in biomedical research,'' even though they are used less today. She said they may play an important role in developing new vaccines against potential bioterrorism agents, such as anthrax.
''Until there's a better model, the animals will still have to be used,'' she said.
This story ran on page A1 of the Boston Globe on 10/1/2002.

people's sake.
''Why take the life of an endangered species to make an
overpopulated species even more overpopulated?'' said Roger Fouts, a
researcher at Central Washington University who worked on Project Washoe,
named for the first nonhuman animal to acquire a human language.
''Now
wait a minute, Roger!'' Goodall cut in. ''As a mother, I would do anything,
sacrifice anything, to save my child. That's part of being a mother.''
The subject was dropped without elaboration, as speakers moved on to
other topics.
Reached by telephone, Mary Hanley, executive vice
president of the National Association for Biomedical Research, said that
''chimpanzees play a vital role in biomedical research,'' even though they are
used less today. She said they may play an important role in developing new
vaccines against potential bioterrorism agents, such as
anthrax.
''Until there's a better model, the animals will still have to
be used,'' she said.

scene of compassion in the jungle in which the animals, both orphans from an

I just came home from hearing Jane Goodall speak! She was beautiful,
inspirational, wise, funny, and powerful. She told these stories and more
which all led into wonderful passionate pleas to help the earth and help each

thought of Kim Hunter while watching her.....how intersting it would have
been to seen them meet. I wonder what Ms. goodall thinks of POTA...I didn't
ask her as she signed my 30 year old copy of "My Friends: the Wild

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. I remember now that when I saw it I thought, Oh my God, this is stuff Fox is going to use for a special edition of PLANET on video.

Where did you find that out, O High Potentate? Anyway, it doesn't excite me -- it would if it were the original. D-VHS is Digital VHS cassettes. The picture and sound are recorded on the tape as little ones and zeros. Because the tape can hold more digital information than DVD currently can, D-VHS can store and record HD signals. It's supposed to look quite awesome. Fox is really jumping on it, but I don't think the format will last once HD-DVDs arrive. Disc is still the better storage method and it offers quick access to chapters and extras and such.

I would hope that Darth makes an appearence in "Episode 3," otherwise what's the point? It looks like "Indy 4" is going to happen, but it's still got several script drafts to go through.

I, too, still have my copy of "My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees" that I got in 1970. I'd like to meet her, but I wouldn't bring up POTA. I think most of the primatologists think it just promoted simian stereotypes (mean gorillas and such), but I wouldn't be surprised if Goodall didn't admire Zira. I'll bet she's never seen the movie, though.
Maybe the High Potentate of POTAdom has met her and knows?

impulse to ask her what she thought of POTA but she seemed so shy (and there
was a mob to meet her). She signed 2 books for me: "A Reason For Hope" and
"POTA as American Myth". I do know that 2 big influences on her as a child
were Tarzan and Dr. Dolittle (Arthur Jacobs filmed the latter, of
course). - - - Jeff

I've been thinking about it and I've decided there is no such thing as a circular timeline. All timelines are straight, that's why they're called lines. What there are are ALTERNATE timelines, and when Zira and Cornelius traveled back to 1973 they created an alternate timeline.

reported. I don't know why you're making an issue about it.
As far as the girlfriend thing, Spielberg was commenting that his

reported. Maybe she got him to put it back in since then. I'm just
stating what I read.

It's only circular if it's the same.
You're talking about a loop.
It's going over the same period,
but it's not the same. If it was a
sealed loop and truly circular
it would never change.

Hah! There's an early review of the remake
of "Willard" at www.aintitcoolnews.com . I first saw
"Willard" on the CBS movies the night the POTA TV show episode "The Gladiators"
premiered. It became a favorite for me (I used to have rats as a kid) and I
always connected the two (the "animals run amok" theme). The new one stars
Crispin Glover as the title character and Lee Emery (the drill instructor in
"Full metal Jacket") as his boss. This I gotta see! - - - Jeff

And I find it very hard to believe that history would endlessly repeat itself and never change. There's just too many causalities that happen.

Yeah, I read that last night, too. The guy who wrote it talked about not liking "rat movies," as if there's such a genre. Anyway, I hope it's good. I've never thought the original was that good, probably because I read the novel and it's very different from the movie and really creepy. Jeff, it's called "The Ratman's Notebooks" by Stephen Gilbert. It's well worth seeing if your library can get it or you can find a used copy.

Oh, I forgot. . . the book takes place in England, which I guess means it was written by a limey. Anyway it was published in 1968. If you get the book you can read it and pretend it's '68 and POTA just came out! HA! HA! HA!

Whatever they were shooting here never made it into the final cut. This would be the kind of footage that, if saved in the vaults, would be really cool to have as an extra on a 5 Star Edition DVD.

What University did you get your degree from? James, you're such a puttz. "I know you are, but what am I?" How long are you going to keep this up? Why don't you just give up like you did in the argument with me over the map and say, "Agree to disagree"?

totally impossible either. In Science Fiction, anything that's in
the writer's imagination is possible.
And I didn't give up on the map, it's New York.

Now this is THE photo to post of Chuck in this group on his birthday.
Good old gun-loving Chuck. This is also one on the original gorilla rifles he's holding, the Rea Voom 88. Did you know that you only see these rifles in the first movie. In BENEATH they're different, mostly wooden knock offs. I'd love to get my hands on one of these originals.
