But humans don't REPRESS these abilities; rather, we ENCOURAGE them, which results in those Apes getting better and better at it. The humans in PLANET, I think, had to have had their language abilities viciously repressed ages ago by Ape religious fanatics, goaded on by their "Lawgiver" and his so-called "holy scripture".
    >
    > Again I vehemently disagree. While I DO AGREE that in the "prehistory" of the apes they repressed humans, eventually man was reduced to being a hunted animal in the jungle, without clothing or culture. After hundreds of years of this man would be reduced to a feral creature. Remember there have been children that have been found living in the wild with dogs and such, and they do not speak and, in fact, have to taught to speak. They do not CHOOSE NOT TO SPEAK -- THEY DON'T KNOW HOW.

Caesar's message of trust and understanding wins the day at the end of the film and centuries later we see ape and human children living together as equals.

    > Zaius insists it's just "acting", or "mimicry"--thought he REALLY knows better, since he's the one who has had Landon lobotomized... and for what? To prevent Landon from using the "speech centers" in his brain ("...but the beast could not speak, OF COURSE, nor will he EVER speak.") The reason that "something's bothering" Zaius (as Zira tells Cornelius), is that Zaius has heard Landon speak... and since Landon didn't know that speaking could get him mutilated, he suffered the lobotomy.

*** Did I say that the humans in PLANET have a language and a culture?
Nope. They have the anatomical ability to make vocal sounds, as Zira
says to the Tribunal ("...their speech organs are adequate; the flaw
lies NOT in anatomy..."), but they don't make use of their voices AT
ALL. Not even to scream in pain after getting shot. Not even to
whimper in fear as they're being chased by nasty horse-riding
gorillas. Not even so much as a grunt as Taylor karate-chops & kicks
    at 'em.
Why? Why don't these vocalization-capable humans use vocalizations?
Hell, even wild animals make vocal noises (lions roar, dogs bark, cats
go "meow", etc.), so why can't these human "animals" make ANY vocal
noises (like grunts & whimpers & screams)? They CAN... but they DON'T.
And my quote from Cornelius (to Brent) tells us why: when the gorillas
catch a human speaking, it's as if it's their policy to DISSECT and
then KILL (in that order) ANY such human. How long has that "policy"
been in effect? Just since the Hunt scene? Just since Landon was heard
to talk (by at least one of the gorillas and then by Zaius, who had
obviously been informed of it)? Just since Taylor bellowed out: "Take
your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty APE!"? Or has that policy
    been around for centuries?
What if (this is just me speculating, now, folks) the "Book of
Genesis" of the SACRED SCROLLS (the "First Scroll"?) involves a story
similar to the "garden of Eden" story... but with a TALKING HUMAN as
the "snake" character: the DEVIL speaking through the mouth of an
animal. Remember that passage Zaius has Cornelius read to Taylor?

"Beware the beast Man, FOR HE IS THE DEVIL'S PAWN..."

A pawn is an underling who does the will of his master--the chess
player who moves him around the board. Just as Satan allegedly made
use of a serpent in order to tempt Eve & Adam, might not the simian
version of the "Devil" make use of a human in a similar way? As Zaius
says to Zira & Cornelius in BENEATH: "We apes have learned to live in
innocence. Let no creature--be it MAN or some other--dare to
    contaminate that innocence!"
If a born-again Christian were to see a serpent slither up to him and
actually SPEAK to him, wouldn't it be likely that that Christian would
believe without any doubt whatsoever that it was SATAN's voice coming
out of that animal's mouth? Wouldn't it be reasonable (to that
Christian) to assume that talking snakes are actually "Satan" in
disguise? The Lawgiver refers to Man as "the Devil's pawn". The Devil
makes use of Man in some way--probably as a temptation for the Apes,
just like the Serpent used to tempt Mankind in GENESIS.
So, then, it's probable that the Apes (that is, those "cognoscenti"
who are aware of the Truth, the "Terrible Secret" of Man's prior
civilization and its nuclear destruction), in their zeal to suppress
Human Intelligence (which they believe leads only to destruction--"Man
is Evil, capable of nothing but destruction!"), would make it a point
to suppress any display of higher thought processes in any human:
vocal speech and non-vocal writing ability.
Zaius would prefer to have the entire species of Man exterminated, as
he mutters to Zira... but that would clue the Masses into the fact
that there's something about Man that makes him different from every
other beast in the jungle, requiring such drastic measures. So the
illusion is kept up for the Masses: Man is just a soulless animal,
nothing more. The Devil once spoke through a human's mouth (an
infernal miracle) way back when God first created Apes and allowed the
Evil One to tempt us... using Man as his pawn... but let it not be
thought that Man ever had the ability to INTELLIGENTLY use speech all
on his own! That just wouldn't do!
But Zaius (and others "in the know") is aware of Man's propensity to
abuse his intellect by using Science to construct horrible weapons
capable of turning God's paradise into a lifeless wasteland. So it
becomes "standard-operating-procedure" for any ape liable to come into
contact with a talking human (a gorilla hunter, for instance) to gag
the animal, bring it to the Minister of Science/Chief Defender of the
Faith (Zaius) so that it can be dealt with...

Yes, the humans in PLANET do NOT know how to speak... they themselves
learned to suppress it in their minds ("the flaw lies... in their
brain"), as a survival technique. The act of suppressing vocal speech
(and non-verbal sign language) would obviously result in the dying-out
of language (babies wouldn't be taught a vocal language if their tribe
purposely suppressed every urge to make vocal sounds); the human
brains would adapt to their environment--ekeing out an existence where
vocal communication is no longer necessary for bare-bones survival. In
no way does this resemble the condition of real apes in the wild. Real
apes DO make sounds, and DO use gestures of sorts (not just those that
are taught them by humans). The wild humans in PLANET are unlike other
animals in that they don't make ANY vocal sounds whatsoever, despite
having the anatomical ability to do so. The Apes tolerate the
whinnying of their horses, but they do not tolerate ANY vocalization
from a human. And when did this have its beginnings? Back in BATTLE,
where a human is almost lynched by Aldo's gorillas for blurting out
"No, Aldo, NO!", when the Apes had specifically written a LAW--"the
First Law" as Aldo calls it--making it a crime for a human to say "No"
to an Ape. Yeah, Aldo is killed by Caesar as punishment for the murder
of his son... and around 600 years after Caesar's death there's a
"nice" Lawgiver telling the sad story of that event to a mixed-race/
species group of humans and apes (... but NOT gorillas, as I once
mentioned here; why aren't there any gorilla kids listening to the
Lawgiver in this scene in 2670 A.D.? Might they not have formed a
separate society of human-hating apes?)... but the Sacred Scrolls that
Zaius holds dear were written almost a century later, circa 2755 or
so. And by 3085, Apes have reduced Humans to the status of mere
slaves, even calling them "unimportant animals". And any attempt to
get "uppity" gets them killed at the hands (and guns) of Urko's
gorilla troops. All because the "line of Zaius" keeps burning the
torch of "justified hatred", all based on Fear. What are the Zaiuses
afraid of? They're afraid that Man will regain his status as a techno-
savvy creature... and wind up destroying the world again.

The humans do choose NOT to speak, because they were forced to adapt
to such an existence... but when Nova comes across Taylor & Brent
being forced to duke it out in the Mutants' prison cell, she chooses
to overcome her fear and rasps out "Taylor!". There are no apes around
to cut out her tongue--just a bunch of mean old mask-wearing freaks.
After purposely erasing Taylor's written note to Zaius ["I CAN
SPEAK"], after "hushing" Taylor by pressing her fingers to his lips to
get him to shut the f*ck up... she finally finds herself in a position
where USING speech is less fearful than remaining silent. Milo
recommends that his fellow Ape-onauts remain silent for a similar
reason: Fear that their human hosts will treat them in a similar way
that their kind treated humans, once they find out what kind of world
they came from... and how humans were treated there.

But, let's "agree to disagree" on this one, Rory... even "vehemently",
if you must. You know you're right... I know that I'm right... that's
the general gist of this entire group of POTA fanatics, isn't it?

O High Potentate, do you often commune with nature here?  If not, why not?  I would.  If I ever go to L.A. this is one of the first places I'm hitting.

    Malibu Creek State Park

Just 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the park has over 4,000 acres, featuring hiking, fishing, bird watching and horseback riding opportunities.

There are 15 miles of streamside trail through oak and sycamore woodlands an chaparral-covered slopes.

Twenty-five-mile Malibu Creek in the park is the principal water-course of the Santa Monica Mountains - from Boney Mountain to Malibu Lagoon.

The park was the center of Chumash Native American life for centuries and was once used to film numerous movies and TV shows, such as Planet of the Apes and M*A*S*H.

    Location-Directions
The park is located four miles south of Highway 101 on Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon Road.

Dude!  You've never seen 1956's INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS?!!!  Don't knock it, you owe it to yourself to see EVERYTHING.

Okay, here's my list of the ESSENTIAL SF (or Sci-Fi) films you MUST SEE if you're going to play with the big boys.  Please try to see all of these before you hit 40.

      1. Metropolis (1926)
      2. Frankenstein (1931)
      3. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932)
      4. The Island of Lost Souls (1932)
      5. The Invisible Man (1933)
      6. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
      7. Flash Gordon (1936)
      8. Things to Come (1936)
      9. The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936)
      10. Destination Moon (1950)
      11. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
      12. The Man in the White Suit (1951)
      13. The Thing (1951)
      14. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
      15. War of the Worlds (1953)
      16. The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
      17. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
      18. This Island Earth (1955)
      19. Forbidden Planet (1956)
      20. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
      21. The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
      22. The Fly (1958)
      23. Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
      24. On the Beach (1959)
      25. The Time Machine (1960)
      26. Village of the Damned (1960)
      27. The Birds (1963)
      28. Dr. Strangelove (1964)
      29. Fantastic Voyage (1966)
      30. Seconds (1966)
      31. The President's Analyst (1967)
      32. Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
      33. Planet of the Apes (1968)
      34. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
      35. Colossus - The Forbin Project (1970)
      36. The Andromedia Strain (1971)
      37. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
      38. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
      39. Star Wars (1977)
      40. Alien (1979)
      41. Mad Max 2 (1981)
      42. Blade Runner (1982)
      43. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
      44. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
      45. The Terminator (1984)

Now some of these movies I don't even like that much, especially the later ones, but I've included them because of their influence.  You'll notice that I stopped at 1984 because I can't really think of any SF film since then that's been truly original and significant.  We're in a period now were everything  SF seems to be either derivative, a sequel, or a remake.  Also, it takes some time to pass until you know whether a film holds up.

Please feel free to argue with this list or suggest either the exclusion or inclusion of other films.

Also, I've seen every one of these movies.  Could you please tell me what on my list you've seen?  Let's find out how SF movie literate most of this crowd is.

What language would that be? When they do retrospectives of science-fiction it gets brought up as one of the modern classics. There's a book, I'll have to find the title, that analyzes 5 or 6 sci-fi films and the "Fly" remake is one of them. In college, I took a science fiction class and that film was one of like 10 that were shown in class. I still have the notes. - - Jeff

No, he doesn't ask for money. I agree with what Dan said, it may be the
title. When I first heard www.planetoftheapesonline.com I thought it was
official. I thought, that's smart, they are combining the old and new to
build a fan base instead of just promote the new one. I should have known
better. Fox smart? Maybe it's the title, maybe they don't acknowledge Fox,
maybe it's the first stop on a new campaign. It just seems the studios are
cracking down. There's a post at the website that Paramount is coming down
on "Star Trek" websites. "Star Trek"! There would be no lucrative "Star
Trek" movies and shows if the fans hadn't pumped up the volume in the '70's.
But again I say, why is Fox picking on them now? Not when the movie came out
        but now. - - - Jeff

Interesting list. I've seen about 1/2 to 2/3s of those films. But
are some really like The Birds or Village of the Damned really SF?
And not one James Bond film. They are as much SF than The
        President's Analyst or Dr. Strangelove.

Paramount comes down on Fan Sites every couple of years threatening
to shut them down for using copyrighted materials. Usually they just
require the site to register with them and carry links to
Paramounts "official" sites. Hopelully, FOX is trying to do the same
        thing.

Yeah, but you better have pictures of you digging them up.  I've read that even some of the metal from the large outdoor cage is still in the ground, as are the steps that Cornelius and Zira use to walk up to it, but maybe it was Jeff that told that to me when I've talked to him a couple times?

I would say VILLAGE OF THE DAMED is very much SF.  The kids are the created by aliens from space.  THE BIRDS I've explained in another post, but I'll add that if I add to come up with an explanation of why the birds act the way they do in the movie, mine would be a scientific explanation and that's enough for me to call THE BIRDS SF.

I was thinking of adding a James Bond movie to represent the entire Bond series (My pick would be GOLDFINGER.), but I decided not to because those films, to me, are more concerned with being socio-political satire than SF, but if you insist throw in GOLDFINGER.  My favorite is YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, it's very Sci-Fi-ish, but ridiculous.

You never see them, but everyone in the town is knocked out for a day or so by a mysterious force, and when they wake up all the women that can bare children are pregnant.  They then give birth to these blond 'super children.'  The original version is excellent, but beware the awful John Carpenter remake.

.html Oh yeah, I forgot to add what I mean by being 'literate' in the language of SF films.  I mean that you've seen enough of the truly significant ones, or if you haven't seen them then read enough about them, to hold your own in a conversation about SF movies.  I knew right away that Michael didn't get the reference to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, which is so much like common knowledge to me that I was a little shocked.  (But it's not too late, Michael.  You've got all the rest of your life to see it.)  I'll also add that the only way to know what are the truly significant films in any genre is to read as many books about movies as you can get your hands on.  Ever since I was a teenager I've been as much into books about movies as the movies themselves.  It's a must for the film buff, right O High Potentate?

What language would that be? When they do retrospectives of science-fiction it gets brought up as one of the modern classics. There's a book, I'll have to find the title, that analyzes 5 or 6 sci-fi films and the "Fly" remake is one of them. In college, I took a science fiction class and that film was one of like 10 that were shown in class. I still have the notes. - - Jeff

You went to college and you still write "alot"?  Oh, excuse me, O High Potentate.  I don't mean to offend.  Okay, put the remake of THE FLY on my list.  Might as well add the remake on THE THING.

I don't remember if this came up, but I was going through some old newspapers and found an article credited to the New York Times (published in the O. C. Register Aug. 16 2002). It says that last year a team of molecular biologists at the University of Oxford identified a language gene (ironically, dubbed FOXP2). It was found during a study of a London family, 14 of the 29 members aren't capable of articulate speech. The gene was identified and "is known to switch on other genes during the development of the brain". The gene remained largely unaltered during the evolution of mammals but suddenly changed in humans after the hominid line had split from the chimps. The human form of the gene seems to have become universal in the human population, suggesting that it conferred some overwhelming benefit. They say language developed about 100,000 years ago, a relatively short time ago.
I wonder if, from a POTA point of view, this gene could be used to develop articulate apes down the line? If only Patrick were here! God, please send Patrick here so he can tell us about this. - - - Jeff

The ENTERPRISE isn't designed to land in its entirety: the
"saucer-section" CAN separate and land on landing legs (they're in the
official blueprints), but the complete ship (secondary hull & engine
nacelles and all) would be in a heap of trouble if they tried to land it,

The entire enterprise DID land.  In an episode of Voyager. Or was that ship called Voyager?  I think it was an Enterprise.  Or are you talking about Enterprise NCC-1701 A or something like that

Dr Who is also a movie.  There were 2 Dr Who movies in the 60's.

I was being sarcastic about Chariots of the Gods...most of it has now been proven to have been fabricated by the film maker.

I think many Stephen King stories border on  Sci-Fi....I guess it depends on where the mystical forces are assumed to be coming from.

I think "Quartermass and the Pit" has a different release name in Australia.  Anyone know?  This is a movie I really enjoyed in my mid teens.  I vidoe taped it (on Beta!!) as part of a sci-fi marathon and it cut out the last 10 minutes!  So another 15 years passed before I finally caught the end on a late night movie.  I'm glad I lived to see the end of it.

          No Dr. Who?  Tsk tsk.

I consider Dr. Who part of SF TV, and that's a different thing than SF cinema.  I'm just talkin' movies here.

          Westworld...now is that sci-fi?

Yes, of course WESTWORLD is SF, but it's not one of the more significant SF films, in my opinion.

Logan's Run has gotta be there.

I've never read the book, but most consider the filmed version a mere shadow of it.  I think LOGAN'S RUN is a bad movie, so it doesn't make my list.

The Birds?  Sci-Fi?  I think often sci-fi and horror are grouped together, but unless aliens are controlling the birds I am not sure if I agree this is sc-fi.

Although no explanation is given, scientific or otherwise, for the birds attacks, this film was enormously influential on "revenge-of-nature" SF films that would come of the next twenty years, none of which were as good as this Hitchcock film, just as his "PSYCHO" was better than most of the horror films it inspired.

I think the sci-fi movie I most loved as a kid was War of the Worlds.  It made me lose sleep!

Chariots of the Gods could almost make it as sci-fi now too don't you think?

It was a  pseudo-documentary, I'm talking fictional, narrative SF.

Rory, I have seen most of these and I may have seen "Body Snatchers" too, I just don't specifically remember it too well.

Luckily I remember almost all movies I see, even down to the theatre I saw them in, or when on TV.

Others I do not remember too well if I did see them are:

          4. The Island of Lost Souls (1932)
          8. Things to Come (1936)
          9. The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936)
          10. Destination Moon (1950)
          12. The Man in the White Suit (1951)
          18. This Island Earth (1955)
          24. On the Beach (1959)
          30. Seconds (1966)
          31. The President's Analyst (1967)
          32. Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
          35. Colossus - The Forbin Project (1970)

I think a few Stephen King movies may be added too...what do you think Rory?

I think Stephen King writes horror stories, but if he's done something SF please tell me.

And the Twilight Zone TV series needs a mention - as do other TV shows.

          See above.

Now, there is one movie I REALLY loved as a kid.  It was an invasion movie and at the end and alien was hooked up to a machine and this showed how the (bug like - I think) alien's home planet was destroyed.  I have forgotten the name of this movie, and I would appreciate some help.  Anyone?

          Michael

You do have a bad memory for movies, Mike.  That film would be "QUARTERMASS AND THE PIT" (1967) which is on my list.  I have the DVD.

          Well, no.

Frankly, prior to joining this group I thought very little about POTA. I
enjoyed the movies as a form of escapism at first and then in later years
          for the nostalgic feelings.

I never analysed the films too much or even cared about the really obvious
          plot holes.

This group gives ape fans an oportunity to discuss their ideas, opinions,
share discoveries, photos and so on.

Well structured debates only enhance one's overall views.

Sadly, a lot of these debates lack structure and there is never any closure
(just a slagging match). Individuals sek to be "victors" rather than
contributors. That's why I often attempt to return to and summarise a
topic. I'm sure I'm not the only person who just stopped reading the "map"
debate (say that drunk....I've been map debating). It is even harder for be
because the area is totally unfamiliar. But the revisit to the topic saw
some conclusions, which is what I like. Rory and James are only disagreeing
about specifics, and they both have good points based on their structured
          justificatons.

The "writing in the sand" debate...well, you both have valid points and
nothing I can see stops you from both having reached an educated conclusion.
          And it made me think.

          Michael

          > But, let's "agree to disagree" on this one, Rory... even "vehemently", if
you must. You know you're right... I know that I'm right... that's the
general gist of this entire group of POTA fanatics, isn't it?

We Aussies are a bit limited in what we have access to.

The first episode of the Twilight Zone I saw was in June 1983, when I lived in the US for a year.

I would have paid for the apes VHS tapes, but we got Beneath in 1981 (and I paid $50 for it), then nothing till 1993.

Anyhoo, I hope you are not thinking that I am not equipped to discuss sci-fi because I have not seen a couple of the movies on your list.  I will try to get my hands on Body Snatchers and I would love to have the time and resources to study the progress of Sci Fi movies (when I decide to collect a band, a director, and actor etc I always try to get EVERYTHING there is out there and go in chronological order).  Until then, please enjoy my humble opinion.

Oh, and why don't you just tape Body Snatchers for me - I'm sure it is on 4 times a week in the US!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot to add what I mean by being 'literate' in the language of SF films.

The only reason anybody got ANYTHING was because I taunted him and accused
          him of being technically incapable!

I really object to people promising things and not delivering. It is
          pointless.

I believe Alex is more interested in having a good website about a Smash Hit
movie than he is in Planet of the Apes.

He took it rather personally that POTA 2001 was such a piece of shit.

I think he will be a lot happier with T3.

Yes, there were and I've seen them, but they're not essential SF films, in my opinion.

I was being sarcastic about Chariots of the Gods...most of it has now been proven to have been fabricated by the film maker.

          Good.

I think many Stephen King stories border on  Sci-Fi....I guess it depends on where the mystical forces are assumed to be coming from.

You're right.  THE STAND can be called a Horror/Sci-Fi story.

I think "Quartermass and the Pit" has a different release name in Australia.  Anyone know?

Well, of course, I do.  It is also known as FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH.  I have the DVD.  Can you play region 1 DVDs, Michael?  I also have INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.

This is a movie I really enjoyed in my mid teens.  I vidoe taped it (on Beta!!) as

part of a sci-fi marathon and it cut out the last 10 minutes!  So another 15 years passed before I finally caught the end on a late night movie.  I'm glad I lived to see the end of it.

Actually it's not quite shown that often.  As for you Aussies being limited in what you have access to, are we Americans to feel guilty that we have so much?  The last time I checked Australia was a democracy, so tell your politicians what you want and if they don't get it for you kick the bastards out and put in new ones.  Also, aren't there any dudes in Aussieland out to make some money by bring more stuff to the country?  I don't get it.

Man, with the way movies have been going over the last few years, it'll probably suck.

Oh, BTW, both of the two DVD copies of THE ONE were out at my closest Blockbuster, so was about three dozen THE SCORPION KINGs, so I rented this thing called MULHOLLAND DRIVE.  I've only watched a half-hour of it, though.  Kind of boring, but it's supposed to be good.

The last time I checked Australia was a democracy, so tell your politicians what you want and if they don't get it for you kick the bastards out and put in new ones.

Yeah, but their politicians took all their guns away, so they aren't afraid of them anymore.

Aussies don't have guns?!!!  What's up with that?  Is that why that croc hunter dude is always going after those animals with his bare hands?

(like you can't take nuclear warheads for kangaroo hunting).

I dunno...I hear they can box.  You could ring a bell, and then hit them with a warhead between rounds.

          I think testiclese is better.
          If Herculese were named
Testiclese they wouldn't mess with him.
          Right Pentaclese?

Just ask Yang 'Bolo' Sze, The Chinese Herculese.
Remember when John Saxon kicked The Chinese Herculese in his Testiclese?

That's the way I always looked at it, but just because Jeff (or whomever) says it's so, doesn't mean I'm going to. I believe what I want to because it's more fun for me. That's why I think this whole timeline debate is pointless and redundant. Believe what you want to and ignore the other guy. As long as you're having fun who cares who is right or wrong??

I don't know but I'm kind of having fun debating the pointless and redundant.   Is that so wrong?

It's a very low res pic of Mike Myers in makeup (and some little girl) for the CAT IN THE HAT movie.  Oh boy, do I smell another HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS.
