.htmlYes, genetic manipulation would be the only way. That would also explain
why all 3 ape species could talk, since nature doesn't delineate "apes". But
history is moved by small groups, not the masses. That's why a Hitler could
come to power and do what he did while the masses could say, "Well, we
didn't know!". - - - Jeff

What are you talking about? "The Thing" was
much grosser than "The Fly". All "The Thing" was was gross. You just like it
because it's detached, unbelievable gross. "The Fly" gross is more organic and
harder to take.

I agree, but the ending just ruined it for me.
The original is absurd, but haunting. The remake is just gross and, for

Well, I think Burke was making more point with Fauna.
But Wanda seemed awfully eager to lose the guards and
try her new form of interrogation, using her feminine wiles

hurt when he rejected her. I think she was game to do

please send your pics via Rory to post ( or some alternative method) . For some
reason your pics seem to take FOREVER to download. I don't know why that is and
I gather no one else seems to have a problem. I certainly don't with anyone
else's attachments, just yours.

Rory's are in jpg (or should I just say, mine, since he's having so

Summary: Still one of the most entertaining SF movies ever made!
I grew up on 'Planet Of The Apes'. I can't even remember exactly the first time I saw it, but I would have been less than ten years old. At that time it was one of the most amazing movies I'd ever seen, and had a massive impact on me. Of course many movies that knock you at as a child don't hold your interest when you're older and (hopefully!) wiser, but this movie is still as entertaining now as it was then. Charlton Heston's other big SF movie 'The Omega Man' is now a guilty pleasure. Silly but hugely enjoyable hokum. But 'Planet Of The Apes' is anything but an embarrassment. It really stands up well. The other great SF movie of 1968 was '2001'. '..Apes' isn't in the same intellectual or technical league, but I know which movie is better from a sheer entertainment value. Heston is perfectly cast as the
blustery misanthrope Taylor, and the supporting ape cast of Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Buck Kartalian, etc. are all wonderful. The only really weak link is Linda Harrison as Nova, but she is only really included as eye candy, and on that score she does her job well. This movie has been sequalized to death, badly remade by Tim Burton, parodied countless times, and almost everybody in the world knows the famous shock ending whether they've seen the movie or not, but none of this detracts from the movie itself, which is a bona fide classic, and still one of the most entertaining SF movies ever made! Absolutely essential viewing!
See that?! "Essential viewing" As in "Essential SF film." Got that, Michael? SF! Not Sci-Fi. SF!!!!

When Paramount rereleases an old movie, even a ballyhooed one like "Star
Trek:TMP", the picture and sound are usually pretty substandard. "Fever" looks
and sounds good, though. Brings back a time when "Ape" fans placed the last
issue of Marvel's POTA magazine on the shelf and put on their boogie shoes.

October 2002 Summary: Still one of the most entertaining SF movies
ever made!
I grew up on 'Planet Of The Apes'. I can't even remember exactly
the first time I saw it, but I would have been less than ten years old. At
that time it was one of the most amazing movies I'd ever seen, and had a
massive impact on me. Of course many movies that knock you at as a child
don't hold your interest when you're older and (hopefully!) wiser, but this
movie is still as entertaining now as it was then. Charlton Heston's other
big SF movie 'The Omega Man' is now a guilty pleasure. Silly but hugely
enjoyable hokum. But 'Planet Of The Apes' is anything but an embarrassment.
It really stands up well. The other great SF movie of 1968 was '2001'.
'..Apes' isn't in the same intellectual or technical league, but I know
which movie is better from a sheer entertainment value. Heston is perfectly
cast as the blustery misanthrope Taylor, and the supporting ape cast of Kim
Hunter, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Buck Kartalian, etc. are all
wonderful. The only really weak link is Linda Harrison as Nova, but she is
only really included as eye candy, and on that score she does her job well.
This movie has been sequalized to death, badly remade by Tim Burton,
parodied countless times, and almost everybody in the world knows the famous
shock ending whether they've seen the movie or not, but none of this
detracts from the movie itself, which is a bona fide classic, and still one
of the most entertaining SF movies ever made! Absolutely essential
viewing!
See that?! "Essential viewing" As in
"Essential SF film." Got that, Michael? SF! Not
Sci-Fi. SF!!!!

Well...Yeeeaaaasss! ( as Miss Prissy would
say)
By the way, I took my son to see the Powerpuff
Girls movie today ( It's hard to find a cinema playing it) which was kinda O.K,
if you're a fan ( which we are). There were a couple of APE references in it.
Mad Monkey Mojo Jojo gives all the zoo's primates Chemical X to make them super
intelligent so they go on a rampage and take over ( conquer ) Townsville. Mojo
is on the steps of the Town Hall while all the mayhem ( sounds of shrieking apes
fill the air Conquest style) is going on making his megla-manical speech
claiming he well be the "King of the Planet of the Apes"! He is then interrupted
by a pompous orang-utan with a posh British accent who claims that HE will be
taking over the earth.
The other reference was when Buttercup in a battle
with a super intelligent gorilla who has captured a puppy with giant robotic
hands to "Take his dirty paws of him you dirty ape" Or something equally
mis-quoted.
The movie wasn't as funny as the show but as a
cartoon fan, I love the art direction and look of the show which looks even
cooler on the big screen.

Yeah there are mor laughs in a single episode of the show than in that whole movie, but I agree the Ape references are the funnist lines. And the are was good. Since it's a parody of anime I'm glad they got to strut their stuff. Too bad they didn't have to songs from the videos, like Devo's Go Monkey Go, or more especially my good friends Shonen Knife, (Buttercup, I'm A Super Girl) in it. I like film music, the background scores. I just got a remastered "Papillon" from France with three extra cues. I love Jerry Goldsmith music. I know Alan in Scotland is into film scores, but I think he and I are about it for this group of baboons, unless Kassidy is into it too. By the way, who here still doesn't have any of these?

I like music, but I tend not to buy it since
it's not a good value anymore. You can buy a DVD for the price of a CD (though
there is used music). I'm going to get Tom Petty's "The Last DJ". There's a DJ I
really respect (Jim Ladd in LA) who says it's a must get because it's about the
blanding down of the culture by the corporations. Petty did the song "Century
City", which kinda reminds me of "Conquest" ("We're gonna live in Century City/
We're gonna live in the modern world"). Mostly I like older stuff, "Beatles",
"Doors", "Pink Floyd", that era. I have Red Kross' album with "Zira". Basically
I can't live without music but I don't collect it much anymore. - - -

I used to collect some film scores but
again, I don't find it good value. I did recently buy the "Bridge/Kwai"
soundtrack and the Oliver Stone movie compilation. I have the "Planet/Escape"
and the "Beneath" CDs but haven't gotten around to getting the last one yet. And
the POTA2001 sndtrack which I probably listen to the most. As I said, I love
that score. - - - Jeff

I'm
much the same.
First
band I really collected was Queen (and I would defend Freddy's hetrosexuality to
everyone!), Pink Floyd + Roger Waters are a huge influence (I met Roger Waters
in April and got an autograph), David Bowie is great because he is so volatile
(but there's a lot of rubbish there too), Doors of course, Beatles + solo (not
Ringo or much of George), Led Zep as well, thr Who, early ACDC and early
Midnight Oil, early Genesis, the Police, the Clash, the Damned, Stiff Little
Fingers, Poly Styrene, X Ray Specs, Iggy Pop, Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Ozzy,
EARLY Metallica, Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Don't
like much modern stuff.

I mostly like older stuff too. '50s, '60s, early '70s. After that I lose interest, although there's a lot of crap from the early '80s I like too. But I've never been big into any band. It just never appealed, not even The Beatles or The Monkees when I was a kid. I liked their music, but I wasn't into buying their records and listening to them over and over.

As I've said before, Apemania really need to work on the hair.
Yeah, I have mentioned this to Brian before. I don't know where they get their hair from, but it's not the good stuff. It looks like it was taken from the beards of ZZ Top. It might be passable for gorillas, only just. You can use yak hair for orangs. But really, the only thing you can use for chimps is Asian hair. it's the only thing that really works. I've told him I'd be willing to pay for better hair, but he swears up and down they use only the finest human hair. But you can see that it isn't. And without decent hairgoods what's the point in buying the makeup or a bust. It's a bust!<.html

It was
a tough job for a 10-15 year old.
After
then I had realised Freedy was as camp as a row of tents, but originally I
didn't see how it logically followed that a prancer with a limp wrist was
gay....I didn't want to label him! I guess it was probably important to me
that he was hetro.
I saw
Queen in 1985 in Sydney. Great concert. That night, Freddy (re?)
joined the mile high club with an Aussie steward who gave him the Aids that
killed him.
Those punk rockers the Clash were, in their own words, "anti-fascist,
anti-violence, anti-racist, and pro-creative. We're against
ignorance".
I've
been wondering what Joe Strummer has been doing. Can't stand that prat who
sold out and did a lot of pop songs (was it Mick Jones?).

Yeah, I sent Kim that CD nearly ten years ago. She told me it wasn't really her cup of tea, and that she couldn't understand the words, but that she did read along with the lyrics. I'm surprised no one had sent it to her before. Jeff and Steve didn't actually write that one though. It was written by one of there guitarists named Richard Hecker. Not one of the McDonald Bros. better guitatists, but he did write that cool song. And he can also sing exactly like Paul Stanley of Kiss. <.html

*** Freddy Mercury was neither heterosexual nor strictly homosexual--
he was bisexual; remember the song "Bicycle Race"? Everybody who
heard it when it first came out knew that he was punning on the sound
of the words "bicycle"/"bisexual". Sexually, Freddy swung both ways,
but emotionally he never really found that "one" person to satisfy
his longing for love (VH1's "Behind the Music" tells enough about
this part of his life to conclude this). Sad. Aside from the Beatles,
Queen was my favorite group during my last 2 years of high school;
Freddy's death was the first AIDS death that really had any sort of
effect on me--living in Fargo, North Dakota, I didn't see much of a
local effect of AIDS that you folks who live in metropolises (like NY
or LA) saw. Until I found out that Freddy (and his band) had been
responsible for some of the best pop/rock music I'd heard since the
breakup of the Beatles, I had been rather anti-gay in my sentiments.
I wouldn't say "homophobic", which really means "fear of
homosexuality" rather than "hatred of" it; but I didn't have that
high of an opinion on guys who couldn't appreciate female sexuality
as a male human "should", and who preferred other men. Yet I couldn't
deny that the music Freddy wrote for Queen was absolutely terrific,
and thus I had to confront my "natural aversion" towards male
homosexuality (for some reason, female homosexuality doesn't make me
queasy--if, that is, the girls in the "girl/girl" porn are luscious,
and don't look like Andrea Dworkin ["UGH!"]; "mainstream porn" seems
to be equally pro-lesbo yet non-male-homo, too, so I guess that makes
me part of the "mainstream"!). I loved the music of Queen; however, I
couldn't STAND the poofy Boy George, or Marilyn, or any other of
those other 80's atrocities! You didn't have to be into "alternative
sexuality" in order to enjoy Queen's music... but I didn't know
anybody who liked Boy George who wasn't excessively "faggy" to begin
with.
Other favorites, music-wise: Billy Joel, ELO, Pink Floyd, Frank
Zappa, David Lee Roth-era Van Halen, Led Zep, Guess Who, Blues
Brothers, and the Knack (one vastly underrated band--and still
releasing albums which never get airplay on radio). In high school
and college I played trumpet in Jazz band; I could hit the higher
notes more easily and often than the other trumpeters, so I tended to
play 1st chair; thus, I got to be a big fan of shit-kicking jazz of
the likes of Maynard Fergusen and Chase, etc. Lately, as I've gotten
older, I've found myself developing a greater appreciation for the
music that was popular decades before the British Invasion: Sinatra,
Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, etc.
I also dig great soundtrack music; started buying it when JAWS came
out on LP, and I really love the "greats" by John Williams (Star
Wars, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc.). Of course, I've
gotten the POTA, BENEATH, and CONQUEST/BATTLE CDs from FilmScore
Monthly--those who don't have the latter two better hurry up and
order them, since they only made a limited amount of them--don't end
up paying an arm-&-a-leg on Ebay later on, folks...
Goldsmith afficionados should also get FilmScore's "Logan's Run"
soundtrack CD.
The 3 CDs of "The Prisoner" music are fun to have on in the
background. Vangelis' "Blade Runner" soundtrack. Tarantino's 70's
hits on "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" is a must ("Oogah-chaka
oogah-oogah oogah-chaka"; godDAMN, but that's the only version
of "Hooked on a Feeling" that I can stand to listen to!). The
song "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" by the Jimmy Castor Bunch SHOULD have
made it onto one of those soundtracks--another masterpiece from the
1970's! "... SOCK it to me SOCK it to me SOCK it to me SOCK it to me
SOCK it to me SOCK it to me SOCK it to me SOCK it to me...!"
One last thing: I've said it before, but I'll say it again... the
best music in CONQUEST is the purloined track from PLANET, when
Taylor sees the Scarecrows, tacked on to the tacked-on ending; I wish
I could like Tom Scott's score as much as I like Goldsmith's and
Rosenman's scores for the other 4 flicks... but I just don't. The
whimsical tracks during the "hand-washing" Ape Conditioning scene
really brought the mood of the film too far "up" from the downer it
should have been--what John Jakes conveyed much better in the prose
of his novelization. Fer god's sakes, it's a movie about SLAVERY!
There was better music on yer average early-70s TV shows, fer cryin'
out loud!

David Bowie is great because he is so volatile (but there's a lot of
rubbish there too), Led Zep as well, early ACDC, the Police, the
Clash, Nirvana,
I agree with Mike's choices, above; David Bowie is my absolute
favorite even though he's right, there's a lot of rubbish there.
Then I got into Blondie and B52s and stuff like that. At my wedding
reception, we danced to "One Way or Another" which was interesting in
that we'd just had a fire there and it was pretty hot in the wedding
gown.
But now I'm a fuddy duddy.

I personnally am not bothered at all about a person's sexuality along as that person is decent. Whatever you're into in your private life, except for truly sick stuff (ie, kids, animals, torture), is your own business, but "queens" now that's another matter. Being a flamer is a personality type and I can't stand them. Boy George had or has personality problems that made him obnoxious. No one's paid for it more than himself.
Well, that's about all I have to say on that subject.

I remember when the B.J. Thomas version frist came out, I think in '69, of "Hooked on a Feeling." Since it's from that era of my childhood when POTA was new, I have a fond affection for it, along with hits like "Build Me Up Buttercup," "MacArthur Park," and even "Sugar" and "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I've Got Love in My Tummy" (remember 'bubble gum' music?), and other stuff from 1968 and '69. "Dizzy" by Tommy Roe is another one, and of course Beatles and Monkees hits, and hell, even the "Banana Splits" theme!!! I had a "Banana Splits" LP when I was a kid!

I like some David Bowie songs, but as a personality I don't think much of him. As far as that 'glamour rock' stuff goes, I like a lot of what T-Rex did (I think they were part of that?). And in the early eighties I liked and still like Squeeze. But a lot of those groups in the eighties just came and went.

I just turned 40 (rends shirt). I have two little girls, ages 4 (5

fuddy duddy. But I break out of the fd mode, sometimes, and also I

.html .htmlHey, who here has the ability to screen capture frames from movies on DVD? I think James can, and I'm guessing Kassidy. I wish I could, but I can't and I'm not buying a new computer just for this.
Anyway, what I'm getting to is that I've often frezze-framed images from the movies and TV show to study them or whatever, and often I've captured images that you can't really tell what you are looking at (blurred motion for example) or from what APES movie it's from.
I thought it might be a good game to play here, especially when things are slow, if these images could be posted, hopefully the way I'm able to embed an image in a post but as an attachment would do too, then the question asked, "Okay, what movie is this from?" It would take a little time to go through a film to find these things but not too much time. Anyone interested in doing it?

I'm not saying he was gay either. I'm just saying if it turned out he was I wouldn't be surprised. Yeah I've heard rumors about Scott and Grant, Tyron Power and Errol Flynn too. Were they? Is Batman a transvestite? Who knows? But I think Brando cultivates an a mystique of being bi to get back at the corpse of James Dean. More interesting to me than their orientation it whether celebrities are good people or not. It's so easy to cultivate a public persona of that, that unless you really know them, who can say? Yep. I can't tell you how excited I was when they released that! Way
back when FSM first started their CD releases they asked people what
sort of stuff they wanted released - I immediately emailed them and
asked for all the Apes sequels and The Omega Man. They've obviously

And, without putting down the Apes sequels since I love the music in
all of them, I think if I'd had to pick one film that I desperately
wanted the music from, I'd have picked The Omega Man. It swings
between light & funky and dark and melancholic perfectly. I'm glad CDs
don't get worn out like records do, or my copy of The Omega Man would
