*** I'm not a speed-reader, but I can type a bit faster than the
average... which probably explains a lot! Wouldn't it be great if you
could "download" a text like Keanu downloads programmed abilities in
"The Matrix"? Tolstoy's "WAR AND PEACE" in just ten minutes: >Bzownt!<
I should get some books-on-tape; it might take longer than 10 minutes
to get through a lot of those huge classics (Tolstoy, Dickens, etc.),
but it'd probably work better than reading 50 pages into it and
getting bored, before all the really good chapters kick in.

about. I get enough guff regarding my theories about Motherships--I
don't need the torrent of outrage any theory I might concoct about
"penisesque noses" would trigger! Oh, and I hate to be Spellchecker
Jones here, but the word is spelled "penis", not "penus". Always
remember: The PENIS--mightier than the sword!
Patrick
P.S. Remember Steve Martin's modernized update of "Cyrano de
Bergerac", "ROXANNE"? In his version of the famous "insult" scene, he
makes a joke about being able to please two women at the same time,
given the length of his schnozz. Of course, it didn't LOOK like a
penis, but it was long enough to function in such a way.

*** True. On the other hand, wouldn't it be equally intolerable (even
MORE so) for him to be TAUGHT how to write by a human? I can see Aldo
not wanting to be upstaged by a more clever human child at the task of
writing a simple sentence... but to be in a place where a HUMAN is in
any sort of authority over him, as a teacher is to a student? Which
would he feel is worse?

*** Those who might not know (probably very few!): the landing legs of
the "Lost in Space" ship were borrowed for Brent's ship in BENEATH.
Phil Broad's website has some nice links showing this bit of
"appropriating". Also, one of the cabin chairs from Taylor's ship in
PLANET was used in "Babylon 5". "Take your stinking claws off me, you

Low budget and shot on digital video, directed by the guy that made 'Train spotting' and written by Alex Garland, it's a kind of mix of Romero's zombie flicks, The Omega man and Day of the Triffids. Flawed and cliched in places but nonetheless a good attempt at a no-concessions-to-the-kiddies horror movie... Oh, and there's Chimps in it.

I heard of that movie. I hope it gets released over here. If not, it'll turn up on DVD eventually.

*** Not anytime soon. Sorry! But, although future revisions may very
well change things, the first line goes something like this:
The man who would murder the world heard a knock on his door.
[The man in question is Captain George Taylor (retired), a veteran of
the Army Air Forces during the War in Europe, at his home in Fort
Wayne, Indiana. The time is the Fall of 1946...]
I may change the first line; I kind of like it, though--it feels sort
of "Ellisonian" (Harlan, that is). Since everybody knows that Taylor
will eventually blow up the Doomsday Bomb, and since THAT is a rather
momentous event in the POTA saga (the "hinge-point" or fulcrum of the
POTA circular timeline), I thought it best to allude to that ultimate
End at the novel's Beginning.

Well, that sounds interesting. How did Taylor end up being a retired captain in 1946? (That's a rhetorical question.)<.html

*** In my scenario, Taylor joins the Army Air Force at the age of 17,
right after Pearl Harbor; during WW2, there was a lot of turnover in
the AAF due to the rate at which pilots were shot down by the
Luftwaffe. Over the course of the 3 or so years Taylor's in the fight,
after basic training and all that, it's not so inconceivable that he
could achieve the rank of Captain (from what I've read about the War,
it happened a lot). I envision Taylor eventually commanding a B-17 (or
similar type of plane) on bombing missions over Germany; since most
bombers had nicknames, I have his bird being dubbed the "Taylor Maid",
with nosecone art depicting a sexy French chick in a skimpy maid's
outfit with a feather duster...

Well, if Taylor is the man who murders the world, then I like to think -- if I must think about the sequels -- that Caesar is the ape that saves the world and the timeline is not a circle. But I really would rather just leave Taylor on that beach cursing mankind.

Yeah, I really did write it, but it was a one-time lark of a thing. I've been thinking of writing another chapter, but it would be a scene later in the movie. It's finding the time to do it that's the problem.

Anyone see a pattern here? Patrick, maybe you should try to figure out the
bigger picture of why you're always getting yourself into flame wars when most
people get along pretty well here. If you don't want to do it for your own
sake do it for the sake of the others in the group. Since you like to read
books maybe your next book should be a psychology book. <.html

From what I've seen, the majority of "flaming" comes about as a result
of a surprising lack of tolerance from others. I think Patrick's ideas
are interesting, and it's obvious he's put a hell of a lot more
thought into his "unflubbing" than the vast majority of Apes fans
(including myself) and I think the reactions from some people are
incredible. It seems to me that it might have been a better idea just
to set up a new group for people who want to slag off Patrick, there
certainly seems to be a demand for it.
I don't buy into all of Patrick's theories, but I'm prepared to admit
that a lot of them make more sense than my explanations when you take
all the details into account. But there are some instances when I'm
prepared to just accept that the film makers made a mistake and that's
all there is to it. I also think that Patrick tends to go off on a lot
of irrelevant tangents but when I see this happening I tend to just
skim ahead to see if he gets back to talking Apes and if not I delete
it. It's that easy, and it always amazes me that more people aren't
able to do likewise instead of resorting to posts that have no purpose
except to argue with Patrick. Not with his ideas, just with him.
I also certainly don't agree with the notion that the group "thrives
on these shitfights" or that people should assume they speak on behalf
of the majority of the group when there is little evidence that they
do any such thing.
Now that's off my chest I'll hopefully get back to contributing Apes
discussion sometime soon.

.htmlGood luck getting back to contributing Apes discussion soon Alan, but
look at the evidence....take away the fighting and all you are left
with is posts about the latest box office movies. I'm almost quoting
Jeff here (he went on further to say all that is left is crickets
chirping). I have made exhaustive efforts at getting the group back
on track by attempting interesting topics that get shot down with
smart-ass one liners.
Personally, if I ever speak on behalf of the group, it would be after
speaking WITH 4 or 5 people in the group (which, face it, IS more
than half the group).
The point is, while you are so noble as to choose to "skim and
delete" off topic posts, the majority of people who join a POTA group
want to talk POTA, and if the group strays from that, you lose
valuable contributors. Disagree?...TAKE A LOOK AROUND!
But if you are happy with what is left, then enjoy it! Let me know
if anyone accidentally brings up an ape related topic.

Anything about POTA is fair game but those irrelevant tangents go way off topic
and chase people away from the group and now we have 2 groups. I didn't know
things were getting so far out of hand. I'll read both groups and right now I
think both groups are probably viable. I think Rory and Jeff both have an
impressive knowledge of POTA and the people involved with it and if they

I have often wondered why these people (Bill Blake, Eric Greene et
al) don't join the group. Jeff, I think you said something about
computer access? Ask Bill if he would join if I bought him a

I think Eric has (or has access to) a computer - he is always putting

Yes you can link to my web site. It is intended to be a download repository
for POTA files since Yahoo doesn't have a lot of download space. If Rich
Handley does his UK Marvel comic scans I'll put those up to. This is the
main link:

.html You can make a very good 12" soldier ape by mixing the Hasbro 12" red
soldier ape with the Urses figure. Give the red figure the black boots,
the black gloves, and then cut the sleeves out of Urses' black vest and put
that on the red soldier too and you'll have a very cool 12" gorilla soldier.
I have mine standing along side a Star Wars stormtrooper and a Star Trek
redshirt (Scotty).
However I'm seriously thinking about junking my Hasbro 7" figures. They're
just so horrible compared to the Medicoms. <.html

out the bigger picture of why you're always getting yourself into
flame wars when most people get along pretty well here. If you don't
want to do it for your own sake do it for the sake of the others in
the group. Since you like to read books maybe your next book should
be a psychology book.
*** So, you're basically saying that I have psychological problems?
It seems to me that in this particular instance it is YOU who are
instigating a "flame war" with me.
In regards to your quote from mlccougar's post, I've already
addressed that in a prior message; also, "cougar" and I do
occasionally agree on some matters, so it's not as if I am always in
a combative mode with anybody here.
I find it interesting that your little list has it as "Patrick vs.
Whomever" rather than the other way around. Why not list "Rory vs.
James", while you're at it? Rory has traded disagreements with James
on this site... so why did you leave it out? Ahhh, perhaps because
you would like everybody to somehow think that all the "flame wars"
on this site have been instigated by me.
I defend myself (as well as my novel's "scenario") whenever somebody
throws a punch, as is my prerogative, Melkor. But it ain't me
throwing that first punch. I don't mind it if somebody disagrees with
me or has a problem with my "scenario"--it's only when that
disagreement goes so far as to morph into a personal insult that I
take umbrage at it.
Patrick
P.S. There was some all-in-fun ribbing a while back at the "SN"
that "mlccougar" cooked up for himself. I don't have any idea what
his (or her?) real name is... but for some mysterious reason he (or
she) insists on using a "SN"/"screen name"--a FAKE name. I made fun
of it, calling him/her "mlccougarmellencamp"... and he/she went
apeshit, as if I had pissed on his beloved grandmother's grave or
something! Why anybody would take such offense at a joke made at the
expense of a FAKE name is beyond me; however, since it didn't stop
him from dissing my REAL name (Patrick) as "Patty Whack". Hmmm... and
not a hint of disapproval from you, Mr. Melkor!
Which leads me to wonder... just WHY do you call yourself "Melkor" on
this site? The only "Melkor" I've ever heard of is J.R.R. Tolkien's
character from "The Silmarillion", the Ainu ("angel") who--like
Lucifer in Milton's "Paradise Lost"--becomes the chief of the "fallen
angels" of Middle Earth, the first "Dark Lord", re-named "Morgoth".
The "dark lord" Sauron in "Lord of the Rings" is but his deputy in
the First Age of Middle Earth.
So... do you fancy yourself some sort of Commander-in-Chief of all
the Evil Forces which make life difficult for the Elves, Dwarves, and
Men of Middle Earth? You went out of your way to adopt a "SN" which
essentially is the Tolkienesque equivalent of "Satan". Did you just
like the sound of the name "Melkor", Melkor? Or do you have delusions
of evil grandeur, as did Tolkien's character in "Ainulindale"?
Inquiring minds want to know. <.html

*** But are they "irrelevant tangents"? The way I see it, topics
which some others on this site see as "unrelated" to POTA are not
necessarily unrelated. I talk about Religion and Politics often
enough here, which has been deemed "irrelevant" by some. But POTA has
never been just "adventures among the monkeys" for me. POTA was a
film (and film series) which used clever makeups and sci-fi trappings
in order to get a "foot in the door" and say rather subversive things
about Politics and Religion. After Cornelius says, "... the Sacred
Scrolls wouldn't be worth their parchment", Zira daringly
suggests: "Well... maybe they're not!" That's like daring to say
(during the Middle Ages and the Inquisition) that the BIBLE may not
be worth the paper or vellum it's written on. ATHEISM! HERESY! I grew
up in a Catholic household, was dragged to Church every Sunday, got
my exercise sitting/kneeling/standing/kneeling/sitting/standing/
kneeling/etc. I was "indoctrinated" with Roman Catholicism from the
get-go... and POTA was the first (and most powerful) formative
influence in my life which DARED to question the Religion factor.
So, if it's my discussions of Politics & Religion which some here
think are "irrelevant", I'm sorry, but they are the PURPOSE for which
Serling & Wilson wrote their screenplay. Talking monkeys and
spaceships are just the means to their end.
Some time back, I made a few posts regarding a phenomenon called
a "hypernova" (a sort of super-duper supernova, able to wipe out star
systems within hundreds of lightyears). I can see how somebody might
think that THAT is irrelevant and off-topic. However, in my novel's
scenario (and I think I've mentioned this in a prior post), the
destination of Taylor's mission--a star 320 lightyears away from
Earth in the constellation of Orion--is destroyed by just such
a "hypernova" in a galactic equivalent of the "9/11" terrorist
attack, in the year 2735. The image of that devastating event,
travelling at lightspeed, reaches Earth in the year 3055, just 30
years before Virdon & Burke land near Chalo. Taylor's ship, when it
gets to its destination (like the Millennium Falcon arriving at
Alderaan... which has been destroyed during their trip to it),
encounters the "HNR" or "HyperNova Remnant" left behind after the
explosion: a Black Hole. And it's the ANSA hyperdrive's warpfield
which--by flying through the ring-shaped singularity of this Black
Hole--causes Taylor's ship to travel backward-through-Time as they
head back to Earth, their "photon-like" warpfield taking on
the "signature" of an "anti-photon" (that is, in Feynman diagrams, a
particle travelling FORWARD through Time is equivalent to the
equivalent ANTIPARTICLE travelling BACKWARD through Time along the
same virtual path). That's why (in my scenario) Taylor's ship can
travel from its position in Orion (320 lightyears away) in November
of 3978 and end up back on Earth in 3955, just as Virdon's ship
travels 4.34 lightyears (from Alpha Centauri to Earth) and goes back
through Time 115 days. So, then, "hypernovae" may not SEEM relevant
to a POTA discussion board... but when taken in context (my
novel's "unflubbing" scenario), it IS relevant--if only to me and
those others who might like my "take" on it.
I don't go out of my way to be irrelevant or off-topic, UNLESS I
label it as "OT" in the Subject header. And if that kind of
thing "chases people away from the group", then there are PLENTY of
others on this site who are "guilty" of this offense. I just think
that SOME jokers on this site get off on being adversarial towards
me, some in a not-so-serious fashion (Rory & T), and others in a
manner that lends itself to "flame wars".
Patrick
P.S. I also accept certain "flubs" as mere mistakes--such as
the "already-blown-hatch" shot of Taylor's ship BEFORE Dodge presses
the button to "blow the hatch". In fact, for such flubs I would not
be averse to seeing a digitally altered print of PLANET where the
hatch (in that shot) is still "in place" (like those still-frames
that James (I think) did a while back). Ditto on those few frames
where Taylor's little booties are visible (in the gunfight near the
end of PLANET). My criterion is that IF a 'mistake' is correctable
("unflubbable"!), THEN it's worth correcting--even if it calls for a
re-interpretation of the various scenarios that the original movies
presented (i.e. Dehn's scenario in BENEATH as opposed to the
different scenario in PLANET). <.html

The Gold Standard and the Steady State Theory (or whatever you are calling
it now) have nothing at all to do with POTA. Both are obvious examples of
irrelevant tangents.

I don't think that was a real flame war.

I honestly can't think of many flame wars in this group that didn't involve
you. But maybe this group won't have any more of them since a lot of the
people you've gotten into flame wars with have gone to another group.

Morgoth was really the "Satan" character. Melkor started off as a guy
who just sang a little louder than the rest of his singing group and not
as a full fledged Satan. <.html

As does the abset population in this group.
There is no doubt this group has lost a lot of good people because of flame
wars and off topic posts. I tried to tell you guys, but you knew better, so
the consequence is what it is.

Maybe the groups can be affiliated with each other. The old group can be the
Gorilla Group. The strict group can be the Orangutan Group. And I'll start
a Chimp Group.
Now sedate the animal and get him out of here!!!!

I think this is true only if you look at the first two movies. The
last three movies do contain hints that a "god" character exists in
the fictional POTA universe, although certainly not the one Zaius is
the Chief Defender of in PLANET.

God DIDN'T allow the Earth to be destroyed. The latter three movies parallel
the New Testament in which God sent Caesar/Christ to save the Earth from
Aldo's/Adam's Original Sin. There are Caesar/Christ parallels in BATTLE,
ESCAPE, and as you yourself once pointed out to me, in CONQUEST too. The
presence of a Christ-like character in the POTA universe implies the presence
of an unseen God character. Caesar's whole purpose in life was to stop Aldo's
Original Sin and thereby prevent at the original source the whole chain of
events that led to the Earth's destruction in BENEATH. God accomplished this
not by suspending free will (except for Milo maybe) but by sending a saviour
in the right place at the right time.
And Then God sent the world a Saviour...
-The Lawgiver
The Lawgiver's quote is the whole key to understanding what happened in BATTLE.
God sent "the world" a saviour, not the apes a saviour. God didn't need to
send Caesar to save the apes, because Aldo would have done that anyway.
Caesar was sent by God to literally save "the world".
Maybe the real Christ also started an altered timeline, and maybe in the real
world the Earth was also destroyed in the original timeline. <.html

.html Jeff,
This ain't Coke, it is supposed to be POTA discussion.
Not everybody is in 2 groups.....if you look around you will find
that hardly ANYBODY is in THIS group. I have dedicated to
discovering why that is and doing something about it, because I want
to belong to a group that offers interesting on-topic POTA talk.
I also don't want any more flame wars.
I am prepared to make sacrifices (like keeping a civil tongue) in the
other group because some have identified their unhappiness with this
group as a result of the excessive foul language (which doesn't
actually bother me, but like I said I can adapt). Also, I think some
of the ladies get a bit uncomfortable with the chat about who we
wanna hump...so what is the solution? Ignore them and let them leave
the group? Deny yourselves of their worthy, valuable ON-TOPIC POTA
chat because you can't exercise a minimum of self control? Not the
way I would solve it.
Another common problem identified is the endless off topic stuff.
Every time someone mentions this, you take it personally. When I
mentioned it recently, you had a hissy fit and started another OT
conversation (and it seems you did this in spite of me).
I've also mentioned a lot of members in the new group have sought
sanctuary from Patrick's posts. I'll add that there is a common
thread of offense taken to LordTZero's posts (I heve no problems with
what the good lord T says most of the time, but some do and choose
not to be subjected to this) and Rory's posts (which have become less
topical and often comprise as much thought as 3 words and Heston
flipping the bird - which was funny the first 3 times, and have now
diminished to attempted sabbotage).
I am speaking on behalf of the members in the new group because I
have listened to the members of the new group and this is what they
have said. I then took it a step further and have tried to offer
people what they want...and this will be based on setting Ground
Rules and agreeing on the consequences of breaking those rules.
Unlike a Nazi dictator, the group votes on the rules.
Rory made the comment that my wish for on-topic conversation came out
of nowhere. It actually came from my frustration with what this
group has turned into and when I let you guys know how I felt you
ignored me and accused me of "crying down under". So there is now a
new group, and the general consencus is that it rocks.
I wish you guys the best in this group, and I will stay a member so I
can continue to post off topic stuff about Eminem etc (which would be
out of place in the movie emporium group).

Okay, here's an on topic, non offensive, thread. What do you feel are the underlying main themes of the Apes saga? Patrick, please allow the others to contribute before laying your Magnum Opus on us. It will also give you valuable tying time. Sorry, that may have been offensive to Pat. Jump in any time Pratick. Sorry again, that misspelling of Particks name was unintentional, but so humorous, at least to me, that I decided to explain, rather than correct it. Again, I meant no fooence. Ha! I did it again, twice! oh well...remember that gal who had no spell checker, it reminds me of her posts. Sorry, I'm getting off topic again. Just ignore the rest, like Pat's post. Sorry! Sorry Pat. Don't pay any attention to The POTA Nazi, Jeff. He's rabid, and now that he has his private little group where he lays down all the ground rules, and all the other POTA fans who've joined him goose-step right along, he can just stay there and ROT.
Ken Taylor is right -- we've discussed POTA forward and backward and it's boring! -- and if you've checked out what they're talking about in the "new" group you'll find it's just the same old shit!
We'll have to just keep this one open so that Patrick has some place to vent. Meanwhile I hope that mad dog The POTA Nazi stays away and stops drolling his rancid foam around here.

Hmm....let me think about that...your response to one of the
clearest, most open and honest posts I have written was to be a total
smart ass and disguise a topic (that might have even been
interesting) amongst a pile of sarcasm and ridicule....Hmmm...still
trying to work out why you WOULDN'T be invited into a group that
wants to discourage identified behaviours that have forced people to
leave what is advertised as a PLANET OF THE APES group.....
You are free to join the new group, as is anyone here, but no, I am
not going to invite you. Nobody invited me into THIS group, and it
seems somebody is asking me to LEAVE it, but Rory gave you
instructions on how to join up the new group (how are you enjoying it
Rory?) so if you want to join up, go for it!

.html.html Here's some DVD news that should make some POTA fans happy. Now Alan in Scotland can watch on DVD the places he drives by to work everyday.
Attention sci-fi fans! Fox Home Entertainment has three much beloved classics on tap for a March 4th release. First up is the Robert Wise classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. Featuring a newly remastered transfer in its original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratio and English, French and Spanish mono tracks, this double-sided disc includes many extras. Side one features an audio commentary by Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer, a "MovieTone News" clip of the premiere, and the theatrical trailer; Side two includes "The Making The Earth Stand Still" documentary, a restoration comparison, 6 still galleries and trailers for other Fox sci-fi flicks. Retail is only $19.95.
Also due on March 4th is Jean Jacques Arnaud's Quest for Fire, presented in a new anamorphic widescreen transfer and 2.0 Dolby surround. Extras include an audio commentary by Arnaud and cast members Michael Gruskoff, Ron Pearlman and Rae Dawn Chong, the original 1982 "Quest For Fire Adventure" featurette, no less than 15 still galleries with commentary by Arnaud, and the trailer. Rounding out this sci-fi trio is Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is relatively bare bones. Features include a new 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and mono tracks, a restoration comparison, and trailers. Retail is but $14.95 each.

Michael,
It seems to me that YOU are once again at the root of the problem. You
wanted an all "on-topic" Apes group and you got it. I personally liked the
off-topic posts, so I took it upon myself to start a new group dedicated to that.
That's great. I joined the new group because I was invitied and I will lurk and
post there at my leisure. There are some great people in that group and I
would like to maintain communications with them.
Now we still have the "Apes Classic" group and I would like to maintain my
membership there as well because of some of the online friendships I started
there. You on the other hand seem to think that this is your forum for spewing
garbage, getting that out of your system here so you can "play nice" at the new
group.
It seems you have a problem with Rory. That's your business. But if you do,
please take it private. I think I speak for the majority of the rest of us still here
that I don't want or need to read this crap. I does nothing for me.

Michael
Not when I know I'm dealing with a kook like
you! I'm with Ken Tayor -- it's over. I like Matt's Film
Emporium group better now anyway.
You mean Aussie POTA
Nazi!

.htmlJust making a point Matt (and probably don't need to continue making
it but I have chosen to anyway). Rory has stated that it is OK to
spew garbage on this group, so that's what I'll do. Then, just like
Rory, I'll remind you all that it is "just for fun".
I already said I'm compromising on the other group so you're not
breaking any news there. The aim of the other group is to keep
members active and engaged. If people on this group want to belittle
the other group you can bet I'll defend it.
So now I'M at the root of it...OK!
Well, I'll tell you what, I'll stop spewing garbage when you have all
finished dumping it on me and the new group.

.htmlIf he tries to stir up trouble over there with off topic inflamatory
posts his ass will be toast like yours is Rory, yes!
The other group has established firmly that they don't want off-topic
posts or provocative posts or insulting posts. When you gave them 3
of those in a row, you were shown the door.
A bit like entering a chuch and raping a nun, then accusing the
church of being run by Nazis (then going on to explain the rabid foam
spewing from their mouths) because they close the doors to you as a
consequence of it.
But it's OK for Rory coz he's just pokin' fun!
