*** MEDIA PLAY is a store which sells Books, CDs & Cassettes, VHS &
DVDs, Computer Games, Software, DVD players, Posters, Memorabilia,
etc. They're a big chain outfit, now affiliated with BEST BUY. One of
the reasons I work there is to get discounts on merchandise
purchases, which is "sweet".

other product out there--like "Harry Potter" or "Spider-Man". MEDIA

*** If I were as computer-savvy as this "mutha-forger" is, would I
have asked James (months ago) kindly to use his know-how to post side-
by-side pics of the Lawgiver (from BATTLE) and the Lawgiver Statue
(from PLANET/BENEATH)? There are things that I know how to do, and
there are plenty of things I do NOT know how to do. I know how to
POST on this site, and how to get to search engines to look up
interesting sites--things like that. But IF I had the ability to
sabotage Yahoo groups, why the f*ck would I harm THIS one--the ONLY
one which is worth posting to? (I'm not including the "Friends &
Fugitives" POTA TV site, BTW; we ALL know what "other" site I'm
referring to!)
It seems to me that SOMEBODY who dislikes me intensely would have the
motive to harm this site AND to try to frame ME for it! Hmmm... I
wonder who it might be... Whom have I been rather critical of, of
late? Hmmm...

I have looked at SA, but unless it reads itself to me or turns itself into a TV program I don't think it'd be worth a subscription. If I ever become sucessful I'd like to produce interesting educational films and videos for other Dyslexic/ADDs. It's the best way for us to learn. <.html

.html*** You're absitively posolutely right--it WAS "The Trap". I goofed
on the title, mixing up "Legacy" and "Trap" (which both used the same
set of 'ruined' San Fran/Oakland). At least I got Zako-to-Galen
right, though!
Patrick
P.S. "... and YOU get the 'fulcrum'!" I always liked that bit of
dialogue; Zako delegating his authority, not knowing what the hell a
fulcrum was... but knowing a 'lesser' human DID know, and needing
that knowledge put to use. I always wondered what might have happened
to Zako after that episode... he--like Urko--now knows something
terrible about the past: that Humans once kept naked apes in cages,
as in that poster he ripped up. After Dr. Kira (in "The Surgeon") has
an 'accident' with the Truth, she changes for the better; what about
Zako? What does HE end up doing about the knowledge he acquires?
Ripping up the poster might prevent another gorilla from seeing it...
but HE won't be able to forget what he saw. It would have been
interesting for the fugitives to meet up with Zako again, twenty
episodes later or so, just to see what long-term effect that
revelation might have had on him.

There's a good interview with James Cameron
at www.cinescape.com about the remake of
"Solaris. He says it's a throwback to the science fiction of the '60's, the
science fiction of ideas. Five years after he was supposed to do POTA, let's see
how he does producing a sci-fi remake for Fox. - - - Jeff

was nonsense.
*** Why do you think so? The principle of using sunlight
pressure to propel an interplanetary vehicle is a sound one. Robert
Forward's novel "ROCHEWORLD", first published as "FLIGHT OF THE DRAGONFLY"
(as I recall the title), utilizes a variant of this concept. Sunlight,
comprised of photons, is a valid "fuel" for propelling a "solar sail"
vessel, since photons--although they do NOT have mass--DO have
momentum, and it is the momentum of a photon which can be used to
"push" against a solar sail. The only "nonsense" part of Jinn's ship is
that such a propulsion source could achieve "a furious velocity" which
could make Phyllis "quite dizzy" and cause him to be "overcome by
vertigo"; the rate of acceleration of a light-propelled solar sail is ever
so small, but even a miniscule acceleration--if it is constant--will
build and build and build... to the point where the eventual velocity
of the ship can be extraordinary. Boulle gives the impression that
such a "furious velocity" is achieved with ease and rapidity, which is
untrue--but the concept of the solar sail IS a sound one. Boulle was ahead
of the pack of other SF authors on this
one.

I'm curious myself. I have to say that I thought the look on his face
when he saw that poster and ripped it up was one of the best images of
the whole series. I'd love to have known what happened to him.

OK, we gotta get this group back up to

into the (unpublished) "Ape Chronicles" archive, to help spur some talk. First
up will be the transcript for the 30th anniversary Starcon panel, moderated by

Happy Thanksgiving!
11/28/00 : Hunter Goatley posted part of
Army Archerd's "Variety" column that mentions David Warner was playing an ape
senator, Helena Bonham Carter's father, in the new "Apes" movie; "John" replied
that he'd prefer it if Warner played a villain instead.
11/28/01 : Cougar noted that Bill Blake had
said Ron Stein was Roddy's double in the TV show. On "The Surgeon" DVD episode
Cougar catches Stein playing a gorilla in the same shot with a Galen double and
cried foul. Jeff got word from Bill that probably the producers preferred Stein
to play gorillas when the occasion arose, but otherwise Stein doubled Galen.
Bill suggested R.A. Rondell played Galen in this instance.

| Subject: Starcon '98 Panel, Pt. 1 |
.html
.html
Some of you might recall "Ape Chronicles",
which was a POTA fanzine put out by Terry Hoknes from 1992 - 1998 or so. Before
the internet and e-groups, before any POTA fanzines I can think of, "Ape
Chronicles" seemed to be the first gathering of fans since the '70's. I've been
compiling stuff for awhile for it's return and I hope to have some issues done
by the first of the year and then keep pumping them out throughout the 40th
anniversary year of POTA.
Meanwhile, here's the first part of a panel
from the '98 Starcon convention. Starcon was really good to "Apes" and made this
30th anniversary gathering the main attraction in it's publicity. The panelists
are: Eric Greene (author; host); Linda Harrison (Nova); Jeff Corey (Caspay);
Buck Kartalian (Julius); Don Pedro Colley (Ono Goro - - black mutant); Ron
Harper (Virdon); William Smith (Tolar, "The Gladiators").
ANNOUNCER: At this time it gives me great
pleasure to introduce the gentleman that knows everything there is to know about
"Planet of the Apes". He's the author of "'Planet of the Apes' as American
Myth", Mr. Eric Greene. I'll turn it over to him.
ERIC: Thank you very much, Jeff. I'd like to
first start off by thanking all of you for coming out and joining us and
celebrating the 30th anniversary of POTA. As Jeff mentioned, my name is Eric
Greene, I'm the author of a book called "'Planet of the Apes' as American Myth",
which looks at the whole history of the POTA phenomenon and how it dealt with
the social and political issues of the '60's and the '70's, and spoke to who we
were as a country and where we were going. And we're honored to be joined by so
many of the talented people that made the POTA come to life. So I'd like to
start by asking them a few questions and then we'll open it up to questions from
the floor. And given that we have Buck Kartalian, who played Julius in the first
POTA film, and Linda Harrison, who starred as Nova in the first two films, I'd
like to start by asking them: Did you have any idea 30 years ago when this film
came out that 30 years later you would still be talking about it and signing
autographs and there would still be this much interest in this one
picture?
BUCK: Ladies first.
LINDA : Ladies first...Yes, of COURSE I
knew. Well, no. We knew we had a wonderful picture, and it was special, but had
no idea that it would have the sort of legs and GROWTH that it's had. And
interest.
BUCK : Uh, I thought it was a silly picture!
(laughs) Anyway, naw, for myself I had no idea what I was doing. I mean, just
tell me the lines and I say my words. Anyway, it was fun doing it, I enjoyed
(it) but, I tell you, I can't believe it's 30 years old. And seriously, this
picture is more popular now then it was 30 years ago. I can tell from the
residuals I'm getting. I mean they show it and everyone's seen it. I haven't met
anyone who hasn't seen POTA. And right now I'm more thrilled about being in it
than when I did it, because it was just another movie I was doing. And I've been
very fortunate in doing some very special movies, and this is one of the most
special I've done. And I'm thrilled that it keeps going on and on and I've got
all these lovely people, these lovely fans that I've met. They're new friends,
they come up to me each year and smile at me, I smile back. It's just a lovely
relationship and I'm so happy about it. And I thank you that I'm here today.
(applause)
ERIC : Another thing about the first
film...one of the things I deal with in the book is how the films were
effective, in part, because they dealt so much with the anxieties and the social
issues of the '60's and '70's. But really, aside from that, they were also a lot
of fun. They were funny, they were good adventure stories and you could just sit
back and have a good time watching them. And I'd like to get a sense of what the
atmosphere was like on the set as you were working on the film. Did you just
think that this was a wonderful adventure, was it a fun atmosphere, was there
pressure because there was such a risk in doing so many new things? Give us a
sense of what it was like to actually be on the set, basically building a new
American myth in a sense.
LINDA : I think my first sense is we knew it
was a serious picture. It had a serious intention. And we tried to keep a
balance with the humor and it was a great set. I mean, we all knew that we were
working on something very unique. So we just kinda went day by day and minute by
minute with something uncharted. And it was a neat experience.
BUCK : Well, let's see...that was 30 years
ago, I was 5 years old when I made the movie. No, Franklin Schaffner, the
director, was a wonderful man, he's passed away now, I think it's been a couple
of years. And he was a very somber kind of director and very serious about his
work. And I knew he wanted this picture to be real, very real. And he was a
little apprehensive about any humor, I thought. Because he didn't want to make
it look like a caricature or cartoon. And I think he achieved that. I
remember the one line where Kim Hunter said, " The human is trying to form
words!" And I said, "You know that saying, "Human see, human do"." And Mr.
Schaffner would say, "Buck, are you trying to be funny?" "No, I'm not trying to
be funny". "Don't be funny when you say that line!" I said, "I'm not being
funny, the LINE is funny. I won't be funny". And I said (very matter-of-factly)
"Human see, human do". Is that funny? Anyway, to me it was a ball doing the
picture. I really enjoyed it very, very much. And all my stuff was indoors, so I
didn't have to put up with the heat like the people who worked outdoors under
the sun".

Jeff, I LOVED that Starcon panel bit, keep up the good work and keep it POTA! I think it is great you are planning on continuing Ape Chronicles. Were the magazines really good? I've got Simian Scrolls, but none of the Chronicles.
Patty me boy, I am on the other group and I'm not a mutant and I'm not a Nazi. Remember my comment re: you calling me a chimp with a speech impediment? You called me Lisa, remember, that's what that was in response to.
On the mutant retard Nazi group over there, I posted a synopsis of the Rod Serling POTA TV scripts from Epilogue Journal #9. Anybody wants to see it, I'll be happy to put it up in files over here, too.
Happy Thanksgiving to you guys! If ever there was a BUNCH OF TURKEYS who needed good wishes, you are IT!

Well,
I live outside the USA, and I REFUSE to work ("work" is Australian for
free computer resources), but no, we don't celebrate
Thanksgiving.
We do,
however, accumulate 4 weeks of paid vacation leave and 2 weeks of paid sick
leave (plus a further 2 weeks at half pay), so we really don't need turkey
day!
Michael
Ps What did the headless turkey say to the POTA chat

I

ERIC: Let's move along chronologically to the
second "Apes" film, "Beneath the POTA". And we have with us Don Pedro Colley,
right here to my left, and Jeff Corey, two distinguished actors who played two
of the mutant humans that lived in the remains of New York City and had rather
extraordinary telepathic powers. If you both could start by just describing how
you came into the whole "Apes" scene and how you approached these
characters...
JEFF: Without turning this into a religious
seminar, I think there was a Biblical paradigm. In the Old Testament, it is said
God looked down and was so displeased, but Noah walked with God. There was only
one person who could take the religious path. (God) went and destroyed Sodom and
Gomorrah. God retires if you don't deserve it. I think the parable is in all the
POTA and in archetypes of conditions today, that we damn well prove that we
don't deserve to be in this glorious place. So that was a wonderful Biblical
message that was emanating from this remarkable play. I'm so glad my friend
Michael Wilson, who wrote the original play and also posthumously won Oscars for
"River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia", I feel it's important to mention that
about Mike.
DON PEDRO: I also in that period was coming
along, it was my very first feature and here I am co-starring at 20th
Century-Fox, I had arrived in Hollywood. And having seen POTA and realizing the
cerebral message in it, that it was very viable in that we had destroyed the
planet and the next evolution in the planet was the apes had learned from us how
to communicate verbally and with sign language and so forth. They were the
survivors because the humans had destroyed themselves and they had taken over.
And it was such a viable, interesting idea that here we are as the last of the
humans, that have hidden away in these caves for centuries and centuries and
we're unable to live on the surface because, as you saw in the movie, we peeled
off our faces and actually showed that we were barely human ourselves. We
worshipped this huge phallic symbol that came up out of the floor, which was the
cobalt bomb. It was exciting to work in a science-fiction area that was so
possible. Here we are already at the next millenia. What is it? A couple years
will be the year 2000? When we were kids 2000 was like, that was science-fiction
itself, but here we are.
I was just very, very pleased that they
decided to use me in a way that was apolitical. I've had so many of you fans,
wonderful fans, come up and tell me, "Oh man! When I saw that, you scared the
bejeezus out of me. (laughs) Well, OK. That was fine with me, you remembered it.
But you got the message out of it, too. And secondly, the great thrill of
working with Mr. Jeff Corey, whom I have admired many, many years, and his
trials that he went through as part of our business (the blacklisting). He
represents the whole body of what we are as actors and actresses. And other
people that we had great fun with, like Victor Buono was in there. And he was a
wonderful, wild guy. And Arthur Jacobs, who produced it, he and I became
friends, and it was just an exciting time. And all the film inventions we had,
like the foam, rubberized stuff in the interior, that was new to the industry,
camera techniques were new, working with telepathic (characters), that was new;
just being on the cutting edge. That was really exciting.

Jeff, I LOVED that Starcon panel bit, keep up the good work and
keep it POTA! I think it is great you are planning on continuing Ape
Chronicles. Were the magazines really good? I've got Simian
Scrolls, but none of the Chronicles.
Patty me boy, I am on the other group and I'm not a mutant and I'm not a
Nazi. Remember my comment re: you calling me a chimp with a speech
impediment? You called me Lisa, remember, that's what that was in
response to.
On the mutant retard Nazi group over there, I posted a synopsis of the
Rod Serling POTA TV scripts from Epilogue Journal #9. Anybody wants to
see it, I'll be happy to put it up in files over here, too.
Happy Thanksgiving to you guys! If ever there was a BUNCH OF

11/29/98: Steve Temple wonders why Taylor
isn't curious that the apes speak English; Reece responds that it "emphasized
the dream-like, surreal and allegorical side of POTA, more than the purist
"Sci-Fi/keep the facts straight" style. Maybe Taylor took the expression
"English is the universal language" literally!"; Also, Phillip Noble gets into
the authorship of the original, saying that Michael Wilson was more responsible
for the final film than Serling; and it's mentioned that the current issue of
"Modeler's Resource" (#25) has an article on 2 Icarus models (an interior and
the one sticking out of the water).
11/29/99: Brian of "Apemania" notes the
disappointment over the recent Hasbro action figures and says he wants to go to
the fans for input over Apemania's upcoming POTA masks.
11/29/01: Jeff reports "The Grinch" made $145
million on DVD and VHS, while POTA2001 made $80 million on DVD their first week
on video.

I have a proposal. . . .
You better check with the other 3 active members of "your"
group first!!
I propose the this POTA group be
dissolved and we all move into the new group, that is if Michael Whitty will let
us.
Told ya before....what is wrong with you
guys?....ANYONE can join.
I don't like that there's two
groups.
There's a "Time of the Apes" group too
and a whole lot more.
If Whitty let's us in, then I promise not
to be such a wise-ass anymore.
Rory, I would never want to change you!!!
You ARE a wise-ass, and don't ever let anyone bring you down for
it.
However, there are two
conditions:
Nazi!! :)
1.) That Patrick be allowed to join and
post as long a message as he wants, so long as it's relevant to POTA.
I delete Patty's posts, but this is not my
decision to make (I don't "own" the group like some groups that are
monopolised by a few overbearing personalities who decide WHEN it is REALLY time
for a group to get back on track).
In return for that I'll put up with whatever censoring is
done to my posts.
As with everybody in the new group, a post
asking "Are you all insane?", with no reason offered, would be
deleted. As for censoring, there would be no need for it as long as the
rules established by the group are RESPECTED.
2.) That the poster displayed on the new
group home page -- the dreaded 30th Anniversary Fox spoiler image, that I don't
want to see on a new 5-Star DVD (I hope!) -- be removed and replaced with the
1-sheet from the original movie, or anything except what's there now.
I didn't realise that was there. I agree that is an awful image, so
I'll ask the gang what they want instead.
OK, so what
have you got to say, Whitty?
See above

T
You are
missing the point.
The
question is not whether Rory is "knuckling under to Michael". As
with yourself, the GROUP requires a certain RESPECT for the wishes of the
majority. Now if that ever includes making soap out of Jews, then I'll
leave the group.
I wish
you guys would stop singling me out.
Why
don't you ask EVERYONE in the new group what THEY think? I mean you can't
tell (because they are generally silent over here), but all except for 2 are
still IN your group. ASK THEM.
The
"original" group...now that's funny!!! Look around and you'll
find other POTA groups established well before this one, so first of all you are
inaccurate here. Second of all, what's so good about being ORIGINAL in the
sense of being FIRST? Have you seen the ORIGINAL Buffy the Vampire Slayer
movie? IT SUX! You need to review your LOB "splitter"
comment.
The
idea of starting a new group was not singly because of Patto's posts. It
was SIMPLE: it had reduced to Jeff "Hollywood" K's off topic movie
reports, Rory's 4 word smart ass one liners, and Flame wars starring Patrick VS
whoever does not bow down and agree with all he says. That's why: (1)
people "lurked" and were afraid of contributing (that's what Neal
said, so it is a fact); (2) poeple LEFT the group (Brian and Helen are 2
examples); (3) people emailed me privately and told me to stop flaming with
Patrick (you'll have to take my word unless they volunteer to identify
themselves); (4) there were only 5 people regularly posting: me (usually
insulting Patt 'em), Rory (impersonating Hal, and generally not contributing
much worthwhile), Jeff ("this week in Hollywood....), Patsky (either
talking shit or insulting someone), and T (I have a history with Brian from
Apemania so everybody better catch me flexing some
e-muscle).
You
want people to switch to digest? So who is the Nazi now? Why should
I? Because T says?
WHY
DON'T YOU GUYS ADMIT THE "OLD" GROUP HAS BEEN DEAD FOR A LONG TIME AND
THAT IS NOT MY FAULT? IF YOU WANT TO BLAME SOMEBODY, NAIL A FULL LENGTH
MIRROR TO THE ROOF ABOVE THE BED SO YOU CAN WAKE UP AND TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT
YOURSELVES.

Intolerance be damned! The Group
lives!
11/30/98 : Ross T. questions why there's no
Zero G in Taylor's ship (artificial gravity?) and why the film is set so near
the present (interstellar travel when we hadn't even reached the moon). Philip
Noble replied: "In 1967, the feeling was that space travel was moving forward,
and it wasn't too much of a stretch of the imagination to believe these things
were possible. You can't blame the filmmakers for being unable to predict the
future".
11/30/99 : In the original film, after Taylor
and Nova escape with Cornelius and Zira; when Nova reacts like they're close to
her home. Mick from New Zealand wonders if he was seeing things or "can you get
a full view of her 'goods'? Or is it REALLY realistic underwear?"
11/30/00 : "Phil" notes that "Variety" says
Kris Kristofferson has been added to the cast of Burton's POTA, adding, "I'm
really bummed about the TV series level of human this film sounds like it's
gonna have".
11/30/01 : 'Twas the season of POTA2001 and
TV show DVDs. Jeff noted that "Variety" said POTA2001 beat "Grinch" for DVD
sales and rentals their first week out. Melkor found POTA2001 even worse seeing
it again, particularly Burton's visual style ( " I hate everything red in the
movie"); Rory liked it more after seeing it again on DVD but agreed it was too
dark and needed more sunshine; Jeff thought the look was fine. "The Horse Race"
was a popular episode on the TV show DVDs.

ERIC: Actually, I'd like to follow up on
something that Mr. Colley mentioned, and ask Mr. Corey: A lot of the people who
worked on the "Apes" films - - Michael Wilson, whom you mentioned, John
Randolph, who was in the 3rd and 4rth films, Kim Hunter, a number of people - -
all had a very difficult time during the McCarthy era, during the blacklisting
period. And here they were a few years later, 10 years, 15 years after that,
making these films, which again, while great entertainments and fun adventures,
were pretty serious political films at the same time. And were very critical of
the government. And I'm wondering if there was any concern that some of the
residual conservatism of the McCarthy era might come back to bite you when doing
films that were this aggressive?
JEFF COREY: Well, every country in the world
has gone through these cycles...there were times of enlightenment and following
the ( ) the Puritans took over and closed the theatre. So the Hollywood
blacklist was something that was part of the time. We had the ( ) movement
in the early 19th Century, we had veterans of World War I who marched and
protested for the Bonus, and the Army was ordered to burn their shops down. So
Thomas Jefferson said the Tree of Liberty has to be nurtured by the blood of
tyrants every ten years. He also said eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
So we went through a bad time but it paralleed bad times through the centuries.
Thank you for asking your question, i think I was able to answer
it.
Eric : Well, I don't want to seem like a
tyrant, so I'm going to ask a couple more questions and open it up to everyone
on the floor, so the Tree of Liberty isn't watered with my blood. One more
question about "Beneath" before we go to Mr. Harper. For Linda and for Don Pedro
and for Jeff, here you are following up "Planet of the Apes", which came out of
nowhere from a lot of peoples' perspectives and was a huge hit; the critics
loved it, the audiences loved it, it was one of the biggest successes of 1968,
won a special Academy Award for makeup design for John Chambers and it was this
tremendous monster hit, no pun intended. And I'm wondering whether or not there
was a lot of pressure that you all felt to try to repeat that success. And if
there was, how you went about working under those kind of
conditions?
JEFF COREY : John Chambers was a very gifted
man, very gentle man, and made death masks of us all to begin with. They put
plaster of Paris on our faces and we had breathing spaces with a straw in our
mouths, as I believe. And he said, "This won't take long"...And every morning we
would have to see our death masks; and here we were. Oh, first we had the
ganglia, because it's a religious procession, we unmask ourselves as
sinners...
DON PEDRO : WE REVEALED OUR INMOST SELF UNTO
OUR GOD!
JEFF : So we took off our face, and then
there was a ganglia, that is subcomposed, we remove that, and there were our
simple, naked Lord faces.
DON PEDRO : Yeah, we didn't seem to have any
pressure. I think they relied on us as artisans to do what we had to do.
Apparently they cast the right people for each of the parts. I probably should
have felt more pressure than anybody at that time, but I didn't. I was totally
unaware of it. I was there to do a job and I was doing the best that I could
possibly do. Like Mr. Corey said, they would call us in at 4:30 in the morning
and sit us in these chairs and it was a process of about a month, I think, that
it took to build the mask.
First they brought us in and sat us in these
chairs and said, "OK, now I'll tell you what. If at any moment you get
claustrophobic, just wave your hand and we'll take care of it". I said, "Well,
what the heck? What are you doing?"He said, "Well, you see these little pieces
of foam?" So they glued these pieces of foam on top of your head. And then they
got these huge handfuls of this warm stuff, whatever, and they just put it all
over you. And you had two straws in your nose to breathe and they said, "If you
get claustrophobic, just wave, don't do anything and we'll take it off". OK, I'm
a professional and can do this. (laughs) And you sat in this thing and it was
warm and nice and you fell asleep.
And then they take that off and there are
two halves, like pottery molds. Then they show us the whole process, they put
the two halves together and they'd pour a rubberized substance in the two halves
and they'd pour the excess out. When they opened up the two halves you had a
mask that resembled your own face. Then they cut it out and they painted it
white and then they added the prosthesis that showed the blood vessels and the
nerve endings and everything. And then they would glue that on your face and
your chest and down your back. Cheekbones, all around your chin. And then they
would pour another mask and they'd put that OVER the mask. And then we would
wear little clothes with a hood and gloves. And they said, "Now act". Oh, being
that it was now like 7:30, they said, "Oh, everybody, breakfast!" While, you
know, we've got enough, you could get a straw in there and that was about it.
Can you imagine? Trying to suck scrambled eggs through a straw? Good
luck!
JEFF COREY : We really couldn't eat and it
was my idea, I think, to have the company provide us with eggnogs, I gave them
my wife's recipe, because you couldn't eat salty foods, because the makeup just
took over the face.
DON PEDRO : If you moved and worked loose
the makeup, then they shut the production down, they'd take you back, they had
to glue it all back in. And if you perspired the same thing was true. Luckily,
we only wore the masks five times in the two months we were there. Because, you
know, we'd go in at 4:30 and they'd roll us to the shoot about 9:30. And then,
6:00 in the evening they'd come and lift it up piece by piece and they'd put oil
in there. And there'd be the most intense sunburn on your face afterwards, it
was really rough. I remember one day they had me in makeup and they didn't get
to me to shoot until about 4:30 that afternoon. And here I'm already 12 hours in
this damn thing. And it's funny. I've got this nice smile and I'm congenial...my
eyes were tearing, I was SO pissed inside this thing. You couldn't see anything
but red eyes that were tearing. Because I didn't want to MOVE, I'd rip it all
loose again.
JEFF COREY : I want to thank S.A.G. for
providing double time after 10 hours.

Subject: [Planet of the Apes] '98 Starcon
Panel, pt. 2
If you both could start by just describing
how you came into the whole "Apes" scene and how you approached these
characters...
JEFF: Without turning this into a religious
seminar, I think there was a Biblical paradigm. In the Old Testament, it is
said God looked down and was so displeased, but Noah walked with God. There
was only one person who could take the religious path. (God) went and
destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. God retires if you don't deserve it. I think the
parable is in all the POTA and in archetypes of conditions today, that we damn
well prove that we don't deserve to be in this glorious place. So that was a
wonderful Biblical message that was emanating from this remarkable play. I'm
so glad my friend Michael Wilson, who wrote the original play and also
posthumously won Oscars for "River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia", I feel it's
important to mention that about Mike.
DON PEDRO: I also in that period was
coming along, it was my very first feature and here I am co-starring at 20th
Century-Fox, I had arrived in Hollywood. And having seen POTA and realizing
the cerebral message in it, that it was very viable in that we had destroyed
the planet and the next evolution in the planet was the apes had learned from
us how to communicate verbally and with sign language and so forth. They were
the survivors because the humans had destroyed themselves and they had taken
over. And it was such a viable, interesting idea that here we are as the last
of the humans, that have hidden away in these caves for centuries and
centuries and we're unable to live on the surface because, as you saw in the
movie, we peeled off our faces and actually showed that we were barely human
ourselves. We worshipped this huge phallic symbol that came up out of the
floor, which was the cobalt bomb. It was exciting to work in a science-fiction
area that was so possible. Here we are already at the next millenia. What is
it? A couple years will be the year 2000? When we were kids 2000 was like,
that was science-fiction itself, but here we are.
I was just very, very pleased that they
decided to use me in a way that was apolitical. I've had so many of you fans,
wonderful fans, come up and tell me, "Oh man! When I saw that, you scared the
bejeezus out of me. (laughs) Well, OK. That was fine with me, you remembered
it.
And he was
a wonderful, wild guy. And Arthur Jacobs, who produced it, he and I became
friends, and it was just an exciting time. And all the film inventions we had,
like the foam, rubberized stuff in the interior, that was new to the industry,
camera techniques were new, working with telepathic (characters), that was
new; just being on the cutting edge. That was really exciting.

Happy Thanksgiving. I guess "Ape

that it has a lot of competition. But I have all 4 of the unused TV show
scripts and we published them in "Chronicles", none of that synopsis stuff.

Jeff, I LOVED that Starcon panel bit, keep up the good work and

Patty me boy, I am on the other group and I'm not a mutant and I'm not

*** Kassie, me goil (as Archie Bunker would pronounce it), please
take my criticisms of the "other" group as being directed at the ones
in charge of it, rather than those who enjoy being members who get to
post comments on POTA on that site. Remember, one person in THIS
group (Rory) doesn't have that privilege and has been "banished to
the Forbidden Zone"--to use Michael's term. As I mentioned, oh, a
week ago or so, such power to censor content and to evict members
smacks of the same sorts of fascist tactics that made Nazi Germany a
system to be decried. As far as I can tell, that decision was NOT put
to a vote in that "democratic" group--did YOU get to participate in
the decision to kick Rory out, Kassidy? Or did Michael do it all by
himself, and then justify it by trotting out some past grievance he
had (the Simpsons tapes issue)?
It still bugs me that a POTA fan (as Michael presumably is) could
ever condone--let alone PERPETRATE--such dictatorial use of power.
And now I find that some jerk out there is forging e-mails and trying
to frame ME for it! I wish I didn't have to say this, but I gotta: I
wouldn't put it past Michael (or one of his cronies) to do such a
thing. If you'll peruse this site's more recent messages (around
#25230 or so), you'll see one by Michael where he isn't above forging
a "flame" message with MY name on it, followed by a reference
to "patriciamichelletitty" or something like that.
In regards to me referring to you as Lisa, it was NOT to imply that
you had a speech impediment! Sure, I quoted what sounds like a
stuttering bit of dialogue, Lisa's ONLY dialogue in CONQUEST... but
it was a word ("No!") which indicated her sensible objection towards
Caesar's incendiary speech regarding the harsh plans he has for the
Human race's future. The reason that I don't mind the "tacked-on"
ending to CONQUEST is that it is Lisa who "soothes the savage beast"
in Caesar's heart--an ex-slave who justifies the urge to punish his
persecutors... it takes a protest from a fellow ex-slave whom he
loves to get him to back off from his nastiness: "But NOW... now we
will put down our weapons..."
So, Kassidy, do you not see that I was giving you the most glowing of
compliments that one POTA fan could ever give to another (female)
POTA fan? In my mind, not even Zira is as "good" a person as Lisa.
Zira, despite seeing the end-result of Armed Conflict when she saw
the rim of the Earth melt, still harbors an unsettling racial
animosity towards gorillas and orangutans (this, despite having
worked side-by-side with a gorilla named Julius, who wasn't like the
militant Ursus); but Lisa, who has a pained look on her face when she
sees the weapons of war being prepared in Caesar's basement meeting-
place, it is SHE who is the first ape to say "No!", but NOT to a
Human--she says it to the Apes' "savior", Caesar. If not for her
intervention, how much more rotten would be the status of humans in
BATTLE, some 27 years later? Caesar's heart softens towards humans
because of his love of Lisa, who probably couldn't love him if he
were to maintain his zealous anti-human attitude he displayed in his
fiery speech.
Unlike Alma, who is an "enabler" of Kolp's pro-war mindset, Lisa goes
out of her way to question Caesar's growing plans for war, pointing
out that if the Humans in the Forbidden City fired upon him it was
probably because they were defending their own territory from armed
invaders. Caesar thinks they are "mad" due to their radiation-caused
Mutant "malformed" condition... and Lisa points out that the "freaks
in [his] foster-father's circus" were "malformed" too--does that make
THEM "mad", too?
Now, had I referred to you as "Carsia", THEN I could see you taking
such a comparison as an insult!

in that "new" group which extolls Democratic values and
dislikes "flames") Tilton

if you'll notice, there's no flame wars here now. It wasn't the group, it was

As
usual, you pick one tiny piece of my post and choose to be negative about
it.
I have
no idea WHAT you were thinking, and the point is not that the group is/was dead,
the point is that I didn't kill it, so stop blaming me and look deep inside
yourselves for the answers.
Is
your suggesting I let you rest in peace a little like you being a nazi and
trying to control me? What are you saying, that with all the shit poured
on me yesterday the honourable thing to do is not to respond? Is that how
"liberals" carry on?
Funny
how the rules you apply to me are not applied to yourself.
If you
want to Rest In Peace, then I suggest you leave me out of your posts (or is that
me being a Nazi again?).

*** Kassie, me goil (as Archie Bunker would

as being directed at the ones in charge of it, rather than those who
enjoy being members who get to post comments on POTA on that site.
Remember, one person in THIS group (Rory) doesn't have that privilege
and has been "banished to the Forbidden Zone"--to use
Michael's term. As I mentioned, oh, a week ago or so, such power to
censor content and to evict members smacks of the same sorts of fascist
tactics that made Nazi Germany a system to be decried. As far as I can
tell, that decision was NOT put to a vote in that "democratic"
group--did YOU get to participate in the decision to kick Rory out,
Kassidy? Or did Michael do it all by himself, and then justify it by
trotting out some past grievance he had (the Simpsons tapes issue)?
In
regards to me referring to you as Lisa, it was NOT to imply that you had
a speech impediment! Sure, I quoted what sounds like a stuttering bit of
dialogue, Lisa's ONLY dialogue in CONQUEST... but it was a word
("No!") which indicated her sensible objection towards
Caesar's incendiary speech regarding the harsh plans he has for the
Human race's future. The reason that I don't mind the
"tacked-on" ending to CONQUEST is that it is Lisa who
"soothes the savage beast" in Caesar's heart--an ex-slave who
justifies the urge to punish his persecutors... it takes a protest from
a fellow ex-slave whom he loves to get him to back off from his
nastiness: "But NOW... now we will put down our weapons..."
So, Kassidy, do you not see that I was giving you the most glowing of
compliments that one POTA fan could ever give to another (female)
POTA fan? In my mind, not even Zira is as "good" a person as
Lisa. Zira, despite seeing the end-result of Armed Conflict when she saw
the rim of the Earth melt, still harbors an unsettling racial
animosity towards gorillas and orangutans (this, despite having
worked side-by-side with a gorilla named Julius, who wasn't like the
militant Ursus); but Lisa, who has a pained look on her face when she
sees the weapons of war being prepared in Caesar's basement
meeting- place, it is SHE who is the first ape to say "No!",
but NOT to a Human--she says it to the Apes' "savior", Caesar.
If not for her intervention, how much more rotten would be the status of
humans in BATTLE, some 27 years later? Caesar's heart softens towards
humans because of his love of Lisa, who probably couldn't love him if he
were to maintain his zealous anti-human attitude he displayed in his
fiery speech. Unlike Alma, who is an "enabler" of Kolp's
pro-war mindset, Lisa goes out of her way to question Caesar's growing
plans for war, pointing out that if the Humans in the Forbidden City
fired upon him it was probably because they were defending their own
territory from armed invaders. Caesar thinks they are "mad"
due to their radiation-caused Mutant "malformed" condition...
and Lisa points out that the "freaks in [his] foster-father's
circus" were "malformed" too--does that make THEM
"mad", too? Now, had I referred to you as "Carsia",
THEN I could see you taking such a comparison as an
insult!

Mentioning Apemania always gets T jealous!
Its amazing what you read into a couple of off hand remarks. I on;y used that as an example because of the word disappointment. I am disappointed that there has to be 2 groups. But if that's what it takes to make people happy... Yes, I am in both groups. I prefer the unmoderated group because I can speak my mind without getting kicked out. And since I can, I'd just like to say I saw Dick Dale and The Blue Flames last night. And I'd just like to say Dick Dale kicks ass! I won't say he rocks hard for a 65 year old man. Hell, he rocks harder than an 18 year old. If he comes anywhere near you, Run, Don't Walk, to see this guitar legend. He played guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet. He even played in the crowd, in the back room and the parking lot! James Brown, the hardest working man in show business? Hell No! It's Dick Dale!<.html

Guilty as charged. With all the infighting I forgot to talk Apes. However, many an Ape thread with opposing viewpoints will tend to degenerate into petty squabbling before fizzling out. And I'm okay with that. Some of the arguments were more entertaining than the original topics anyway. But lets not forget we are still an Apes Group. We can talk Apes too, and not just grouse about the other group. I'll start. Here are is a list of alternate endings for the films, possibly ended the series before Battle, and saving us the pain of watching it.
Planet - Now that was a fine ending. I wouldn't change a thing. Though if Taylor and Zira had fallen in love and rode off with her instead, it certainly would have opened up some alternative plot directions. But even in the swingin' sixties that probably would have ended the series right there.
Beneath - Zaius, seeing the folly of war, helps Taylor back to Ape City, where Zira patches him up and he is elected to Ape the counsel and educates the humans, and fosters their integration into Ape society. Doesn't end the series, but keeps it on the planet and takes it in a new direction. Then maybe later on they can blow it up.
Escape - Zira and Cornelius escape to the Everglades and found their colony, The End. Or so we think...You could have another film where the government discovers them and sends in a strike team to take them out. The End...Or so we think. One Ape, Caesar, or Milo, since Armando wouldn't have changed his name, escapes alive, and he goes on to start the revolution in the next film.
Conquest - Caesar kills all the humans and founds a pure Ape society. What humans that do escape, flee the cities and revert to feral behaviors, and that takes us full circle, without an alternate timeline. That one will make the "Circular Timeline Fans" happy.
Battle - There never is a Battle, and the series ends on a more satisfying note in one of the earlier films. Or . . . The spend more money on this one than the rest of the movies combined, with battle scenes throughout the whole movie that would rival any war film and are more reminiscent of the poster than the actual film.

Good for you, T. Those are some fun ideas.
If they were made today, it would be a whole different story. Possible sequels
from the get-go. Heston would be more than happy to do sequels. "What'd ya mean

called "King of the Mountain - The Nature of Political Leadership" by Arnold M.
Ludwig. It's a 2002 book, non-fiction, about how our genetic natures lead to our
political decisions. Compares political history to ape behavior. Pictures of
apes mixed in with guys like Hitler. Has a gorilla with a crown on his head on
the cover. Of course apes and politics are a theme of POTA. Ask Patrick! - - -

| Subject: The Group Lives! Also, "The Hunt for Zero Point" book: WOW! |
.html*** Yeah, like I'm the first bloke to realize that POTA was
political! As I recall, Greene's book came out before I ever joined
this group.
By the way, I agree: The Group Lives! Whoever thought this one just
off & died was as mistaken as Breck was regarding Caesar. MacDonald
cut the power to the Shock Table, and we FAKED it! The Group is
dead... LONG LIVE THE GROUP!
Speaking of books, I just finished reading a TERRIFIC book
called "The Hunt for Zero Point: Inside the Classified World of
Antigravity Technology" by Nick Cook. Mr. Cook traces the U.S.A.'s
covert gravity-manipulating ultra-secret programs back to the race to
develop "wonder weapons" which the Nazis hoped would win the war for
them. It seems that there was this crazy genius named Viktor
Schauberger, whose bizarre notions regarding superfast-spinning
turbines seemed to be ahead of his time, in that he thought that
the "zero point energy" which we now know exists was what he was
tapping into when he wrote:
"I stand face-to-face with the apparent 'void,' the compression of
dematerialization that we are wont to call a 'vacuum,'"; "I can now
see that we are able to create anything we wish for ourselves out of
this 'nothing.'"
That was written in his diary entry for 14 August 1936! The Nazis
funded a top-secret, SS-run program, headed by Schauberger in order
to create flying machines which would out-fly anything the Allies
flew. One of the "flying machines" that was being developed as early
as 1941 was dubbed the "fleigende scheibe", which is German
for "flying saucer"! It could very well be that the "foo fighters"
which harassed Allied aircraft in the last few months of the War over
Europe were the first working prototypes of this technology, which--
had the Nazis had more time to develop--would have turned the tide in
Hitler's favor.
As the Allies relentlessly crushed the German half of the "Axis"
powers, teams of American Army Intel agents scoured Germany for any
and all war-technologies that they could pilfer, before the Soviets
got their mitts on 'em (in fact, Ian Fleming--creator of the "James
Bond" books--was a member of the British tech-plunder "T-forces").
Schauberger was one of the guys whom the U.S. debriefed (in his case,
for about 9 months), acquiring all his ideas which they could
eventually exploit in the production of propulsion technologies used
later in the Stealth fighters and things like that.
Before anybody here just dismisses this book, be forewarned that the
author is the aviation editor of "Jane's Defence Weekly", the world's
leading military-affairs journal. He's NOT some goofy crack-pot
trying to pass off some improbable, exotic half-truths; as far as the
UFO phenomenon goes, he really just barely touches on it. He COULD
have gone overboard and made all sorts of claims regarding UFOs,
given the foundation he lays with all his other scholarship
concerning the quests on both sides of WW2 to out-do the Enemy in the
realm of aircraft warfare. I heartily recommend this book.
And just in case you're wondering what this has to do with POTA,
well, in the book I'm writing, Dr. Hasslein is one of the German
scientists who were smuggled over to America as part of "Operation
PAPERCLIP" in order to develop "breakthrough propulsion" technologies
which had their origin in the minds of brilliant German scientists
whom Himmler's SS had first sought to exploit. In a way,
the "Hassleinian hyperdrive" that I've cooked up involves tapping
into this "zero point energy field", which Nick Cook eventually gets
around to calling "hyperspace" (on pages 233-34). The warpfield which
cocoons the ANSA vehicles on their interstellar journeys is created
by high-intensity hyper-focused laserlight, which (through E=mc^2)
converts Energy (laserlight) into hyperdense Mass (a micromass Black
Hole), which is then given more-and-more angular momentum (axial
spin), causing it to whirl like a turbine... just like Schauberger's
concept describes. After that spinning mini-Black Hole's "event
horizon" undergoes topological deformation (from a non-
rotating "sphere" to an ultra-spinning "oblate spheroid" to a hyper-
spinning "disc"-shaped warpage with a Naked Singularity ringing the
center), that hyperspatial "sweet spot" at the center is bombarded
with fuel shot from a linear accelerator "fuel injector", creating
the nearly-spherical "bubble" around the spaceship, which propagates
at Lightspeed (since it's made of laserlight) divided by a number
representing the Mass of the ship inside the warpfield (the "index of
refraction" effect which causes "lightspeed" for Taylor's ship to be
only about one-sixth that of ordinary lightspeed, making him take
2006 Earth-Time years to travel 320 Lightyears).
My book needs a plausible explanation for how the U.S.A. could send
out interstellar missions in the early-1970's, and Nick Cook's book
helps to point out the info which would have been exploited by
America's "black budget" military techies to produce vessels with
REAL world (and not just in the POTA universe) has ever sent out
secret missions into Outer Space utilizing technologies that not even
NASA (the "civilian" space agency) was ever made aware of.

*** Rory, you should consider it a Badge of Honor that you've been
banned from that group. I'm confident that your "proposal" the other

reason"!
Just out of curiosity, do you have to subscribe (or resubscribe) in
order to read their daily posts? I haven't even TRIED to join up with
those guys, for obvious reasons, and yet I was able to surf the site
and "lurk", just to see what I was "missing" (not much, as I said

to "Cult" movies, etc. etc.? Eventually, you get to a place where you
can just type in "PLANET OF THE APES" and a list of all the Yahoo
POTA groups pops up, including (on the 2nd page) the POTA-DG one. It
worked for me, but maybe they "know" that your computer is the

I wonder if this kind of technology might someday lead to practical nuclear fusion? I mean create nuclear fusion by encasing a small amount of matter in a powerful magnetic field that's "spinning in all directions at once" with the affect that the matter within spins to a velocity so great that in collapses unto itself. I'm talking about very small amounts of negatively or positively charged matter here. .html I just saw the Soderbergh/Clooney version of "SOLARIS" yesterday.
They did a much better job of it than that Rooskie did 30-some years
ago. And in HALF of the time, to boot. THIS version was much easier
to sit through, and I could actually tell what was going on, plot-
wise, unlike when I slogged through that older version.
So, do I recommend it? Well, I didn't HATE it, but I didn't LOVE it,
either. It was alright; more thought-provoking than the average SF
flick that hits the Big Screen. Not necessarily ACTION-PACKED and
exciting. Not that every SF film MUST be. It might depend on the mood
you're in.
I'd give it a "B-minus". I haven't read the Stanislaw Lem book it's
based on, but if it's really really faithful to the source novel,
then I'd probably upgrade it to a "B". If you don't go to it
expecting it to be some SF action movie, you'll probably like it...
maybe. It's hard to tell what other people might like. One of my
favorite SF films is "ZARDOZ", which MOST people seem to have HATED
with a passion. I hated the Russian version of "SOLARIS", but THIS
version was alright.
BTW, it boggles my mind that the MPAA threatened to give "SOLARIS" an
R-rating just because Clooney's bare ass is visible in a few shots.
It's NOT done as if it's a "Boogie Nights"-type of 1970's porno
flick, with a "wucka-chicka-wucka-chicka" soundtrack and over-
dubbed "Oohs" and "Ahhhs"! Jack Valenti and all those other A-holes
should just f*** off and get a life. Censorship in ANY form (even
just the THREAT of it) is unacceptable. I'm STILL waiting for the
release of the TRUE version of Kubrick's "EYES WIDE SHUT" without the
digitally-altered "cleaning-up" of the explicit orgy scenes. I've
heard that it's available in Europe, but the version in America is
the same altered one that was in theaters over here. Ugh!

Yeah, that's what I have been doing until I was briefly banned from that too. But I was trying to get the postings directly E-mailed to me. I'm sure Michael will fix this as I'm not a "danger" anymore. The feud is over as far as I'm concerned. I just want to keep up on the latest POTA news.
For instance, I was looking at, I think, the latest TOYFAIR magazine yesterday, and they had a picture in the back, I think page 98, of a Playmate Star Trek Khan figure (Ricardo Montalban, of course) walking a chimp Kubrick figure on a leash. I thought that was pretty funny. Jeff will want to go find that photo. It was one of the current Toy Mags.

*** I know EXACTLY what you mean. In fact, in the Epilogue of Nick
Cook's book, he mentions that--oh, I'll just type it in, so you can
read it for yourself!
"Since the publication of the U.K. edition of "The Hunt for Zero
Point", one other significant postscript to the story is worth
mentioning--in time, the word "momentous" may even be appropriate. On
March 26, 2002, a U.S. patent was granted for a device called
the "Motionless Magnetic Generator," or MEG, that its supporters say
will be the world's first commercially available free-energy home-
generator. The MEG has been developed by a team of inventors led by
long-time zero point energy pioneer and proponent Dr. Thomas E.
Bearden, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and former engineer.
The MEG is designed to provide an indefinite output of 2.5 kilowatts--
enough to run a room or two in your house--by tapping into the
infinite energy of the quantum sea. Link three or four MEGs together,
proponents claim, and you get enough output to run an entire house.
The event is significant, at least, because the U.S. Patent Office
traditionally shuns so-called "free-energy" devices; de facto, it has
accepted there must be something to this one. As I write this, scant
weeks after the patent's acceptance, it remains to be seen whether
claims for the MEG will indeed transcend into commercially available
hardware. But maybe, just maybe--as I sit here recalling Hal
Puthoff's exhortation--3.26.02 will be the date I put in my diary as
the day the world changed--forever.
That, Rory, is the last paragraph of the book "The Hunt for Zero

book and the people/places/things mentioned IN the book. So, I'm
gonna surf for a while and see what I can find. I'll be sure to post

P.S. BTW, I think that the "E" in MEG probably stands
for "Electromagnetic", so that MEG would be an acronym
for "Motionless Electromagnetic Generator". Otherwise, the acronym
should read "MMG". I wonder if the U.S. Patent Office has this patent

I saw "Solaris". Moved enough that I wasn't
bored, but didn't find it particularly thought-provoking. This kind of story has
been done so much (the artificial person, is it conscious); it reminded me of
"Star Trek" without the action. Maybe "Star Trek" smoking something. What
fascinated me was the look and how much it was like a '60's film, kind of
understated, even the sound. It makes you realize how bombarded we are in sci-fi
movies today. It often had me thinking of "2001". I liked too how visually it
starts out normal, then suddenly off to the side you see a futuristic TV and go,
"Oh, this is the future". I hope this movie makes some dough; the studios should
be rewarded for taking chances. But it's an awkward movie to see with an
audience, who seemed rather bored. Though they liked the skittish character, and
the scene where the doppelganger rejects Clooney (engineered to be his fantasy
and she rejects him). I enjoyed the movie. - - - Jeff

Yeah, I have that issue. I think I mentioned
it recently. They list all the Kubricks (not just POTA). Also of interest, Kevin
Smith is planning like 60 - 70 action figures based on his films. You'll recall
there's a POTA spoof in "Jay and Silent Bob", so maybe...? As we wait for a
"Simpsons" musical set we can hope for something from that. - - -

Just out of curiosity, do you have to subscribe (or resubscribe)
in order to read their daily posts? I haven't even TRIED to join up with
those guys, for obvious reasons, and yet I was able to surf the site
and "lurk", just to see what I was "missing" (not much, as I said
before).
Yeah, that's what I have been doing until I was
briefly banned from that too. But I was trying to get the postings
directly E-mailed to me. I'm sure Michael will fix this as I'm not a
"danger" anymore. The feud is over as far as I'm concerned. I just
want to keep up on the latest POTA news.
For instance, I was looking
at, I think, the latest TOYFAIR magazine yesterday, and they had a picture in
the back, I think page 98, of a Playmate Star Trek Khan figure (Ricardo
Montalban, of course) walking a chimp Kubrick figure on a leash. I
thought that was pretty funny. Jeff will want to go find that
photo. It was one of the current Toy Mags.
