Sorry Jeff, I forgot the fave movie....
This has changed over time.
For many years it was Beneath (blowin' up the world...how can
you beat that for an ending?), and as I saw more ape movies it became the one I
had not seen, or had seen the least.
Now, my fave would be Planet. I still like the
other movies but I wish they had paid more respect to the
sequels/offshoots.
I do so hate that Tim Burton movie. If I had one go in a
time machine and I could choose between causing world peace or killing Tim
Burton im the year 2000....well, I would have to think HARD!!!!

This probably isn't the best time to
unite "Ape" fans, what with the infighting going on in this group and last
night's announcement that any new POTA DVDs are a long way off (have you
hugged your POTA DVD box set today? You two are going to be together for a
while). But in about 3 weeks the 40th anniversary year begins and I want
us to renew our faith. We can celebrate. Who needs Fox? Pierre Boulle
didn't need them 40 years ago when he put pen to paper. No need to
complain; Fox has been very generous with their DVDs, basically giving us
the TV show collection out of the goodness of their
hearts, because they know no other way. But we're on our own this
anniversary.
To begin with, this weekend I want to
take stock and see where this group is at in terms of numbers. There's
been some controversy and no one can be blamed for calling it quits after
what's been going down here. So the Grand Experiment is this: I'm asking
EVERYONE, please, if you still are in this group (and maybe even enjoy
it), now is the time to be heard. I'd like everyone to e-mail the title of
their favorite "Apes" films; not necessarily the best one, but their
personal favorite. You don't even have to give your name, rank and serial
#. Just send the movie title. We'll announce a winner. If you receive
this group and you never post, just do this one thing.
Remember "Horton Hears A Who"? Horton
admonished the Whos to stand up and be counted. Now's the time to show
each other and those who think honest communication isn't commercial
enough that we're in this group because we want to share our interest and
love of POTA in our own way. As Horton said, ""Bang on a pot, bang on a
drum...call on a zilliphone, bang on your bum" (or something like that)
and say, "I'm here!", "I'm heRE!", "I'M HERE!". One post, one movie from
EVERYONE, even those we never hear from. That's my challenge. Otherwise,
you don't exist, man! It must be weird being you. And then what will
you say when you're asked, "What did you do during the POTA group, Daddy?"
Future generations are looking to you.
One post, one movie, from
everyone.
Oh, and this weekend will be the
conclusion of the Starcon panel, with more stuff to come. Thanks for your
attention.

OK - yeah, and you can add kangaroos - they are large
varmin and are treated as such.
But they're cute! Not as cute as

James didn't liked it when I figured out from the headers that all of the bogus
emails came from his email server at work (except for one which came from his
AOL email server). He gave me a sarcastic reply once when I asked him who LCARS
was. I wondered why so I checked and noticed that the email forgeries were
definitely coming from somebody familiar with POTA. For example note the smart
ass comment "You got what you wanted Tiger.." in this message. "24.29.148.72"
is an IP address James uses to post from and "nyc.rr.com" is his email server.

Hey Tom, Dave B. scanned one of the comic stories to a site on the
web. I can go look it up if you like, or you can go to my tv site
and look on the pota annual pages for a link to it. There are a
couple of other sample pics and stories from the annuals as well.

The TV series is just thought of as a
failure and they assume no one would be interested. I remember a reader of the

groaned. If Fox isn't even willing to do more stories about the original movies,

I wonder why no one (Marvel?) ever did comic stories
from the TV series? I would love to see original stories from the TV
series. I would buy them either as comics or paperbacks. We
don't have any original TV stories except the Power Records stories, and
those appear to be either unused or rejected scripts.
I wonder if it
would do any good asking Fox to license books based on the TV series.
They probably don't think anyone would be interested but almost every
sci-fi series has fans and fictional stories published in books.
Since POTA nearly created the concept of a blockbuster sci-fi franchise
how come it has so few fictional stories
published?

Don't know. Nor do I know how the POTA2001
action figures sold. But judging from Fox's attitude toward "Apes" despite
POTA2001 being "one of our most profitable films in the last 5 years" ( - - Fox
head Hutch Parker) probably not too well. At the infamous forum the other night
Peter Stoddard said "The Simpsons" is selling gangbusters, also "X-Files" and
"Buffy". But "Mary Tyler Moore Show" flopped (kind of a surprise). Didn't
mention "Apes" TV. I think the recent "Apes" stuff sold mediocre but not
terrible. And it IS a bad economy. - - - Jeff

James has his Troublemakers List. He said that Rory was ONE of the
Troublemakers on the free group. Who else is a Troublemaker? Anyone he
doesn't like for whatever reason. I was put on the Troublemaker's List (he
called me that to someone else in email) not for criticising James but for
QUOTING one of his earlier posts. James labels people like Rory
"troublemakers" even though I don't remember ANY flame wars until James joined
the group. Before James joined I was extremely impressed by how well people
got along. As soon as James joined he immediately got into a flame war with
Michael, and then Patrick, Rory, and later somebody else (Anthony?).
It's kind of pathetic that James now reads this group NOT for contributing, but
for the sole reason of spying on the group to see what people say in order to
determine who becomes the next purge victim in his dictatorship.
How creepy is that? To know that THIS group is under surveillance so that the
POTA Stalinist knows which people to purge back in the People's Democratic
Republic of POTADG.
I should explain the term "POTA Stalinist". That the dictator of one group
tries to control someone ELSE'S group was a favorite tactic of Stalin. George
Orwell, the author of "1984" and "Animal Farm" (a favorite of mine like POTA)
was anti-Communist because he directly experienced this. A lifelong Socialist,
Orwell volunteered to fight on the Republican side against Fascism in the
Spanish Civil War. However Orwell had the bad luck to be placed in a
Trotskyite unit and was barely able to escape when Stalinists came after his
unit. Stalin was controlling things not only in Russia but also in Spain and
elsewhere. James tries to control things not only in his dictatorship but also
in the free group. And like Stalin, James is also obsessed with appearances
and doesn't want his practices brought to light. <.html

.html I'm wondering how people would rank the five POTA "universes" (or series if you
prefer) from most interesting to least interesting. Here is mine.
1. Movie
2. TV
3. Cartoon
4. Book
5. POTA2001
The first two are probably very common so I'm especially curious how people
would rank the last three. But I'm guessing Rory the Troublemaker would rank
"Book" as #1?

well, I would have to state the original is my favourite, but it all

As Dave mentioned, the UK annuals had comic strips and text stories
based on the TV series (coincidentally I've been putting together an

Eric Greene: So Linda, second time around
("Beneath") was the pressure on?
Linda Harrison: Um, the pressure wasn't on
me as an actress, but I felt the pressure on the producers, because they had to
follow a pretty terrific film. And, you know, you do your best. And I think
"Beneath" had a lot of interesting stuff in it. Especially in (their) holes
where (they) could think. I thought that was really neat if we could do that.
You know, have that thinking process that they had, the mutants.
Don Pedro Colley: It was amazing how you had
to work from an almost impossible position as an actress. If you can imagine,
somehow or other, as humans we know in the next 14 generations or whatever, you
don't know what words are, you don't know how to speak or form words. You grunt
like a monkey grunts. The roles are totally reversed. And now, out of nowhere
they're trying to teach her how to talk.
Linda: You know, I was in a man's world. They
were very macho when you think about it. They liked having me being quiet. And I
still feel it to this day, the male dominance.
Don Pedro: That's alright, we love you
anyway.
Eric: Actually, that's one of the things
that I put in the book. That it's ironic that when you finally get to say your
one word, they finally let you say a word, they kill you
immediately.
Linda: Yeah. See? That's the male
consciousness.
Eric: It was "Planet of the Men" as much as
"Planet of the Apes".
Linda: Yeah. Very good.
Eric: Moving forward a few years, we've been
joined recently by William Smith, who played Tolar on the television series, and
we have Ron Harper, who starred as Virdon on the television series. And I just
would like to open it up to you two to find out what it was like taking this
from the big screen to the small screen and trying to help write the next
chapter of all this. What was that like for you?
William Smith: One thing about POTA, which
Ron starred in...I played a gladiator. First of all, I found it very difficult
to take orders from Roddy McDowall as a monkey. But everyone was marvelous and I
was so grateful that I was playing a human and not an ape. I think the thing I
remember most about it was, playing a gladiator, we ended up fighting in this
arena, the one who lost would die. And my son was played by a marvelous actor
who (also played) the Beast Master, named Marc Singer. And we had to do this big
fight, father and son. And he had never done a movie fight before, he didn't
know how to throw a punch or anything. I spent two hours with him trying to
teach him how to punch into the belly. He hit me so hard...and that was a
delight, getting beat up by your son. But the guys in the crew and the cast,
everybody was fine. I always wanted to be a gladiator. But when you're a
gladiator, you lose to your son and you damn the apes!
Ron Harper: Well, I think that about covers
it. I don't think there's anything left to say. I think your point was well
taken.
Eric: Well, let's open it up to the audience,
to all the POTA fans here. Does anybody have any questions for any of our
performers, or for me or anything about POTA in general? I know someone's got a
good question...
Don Pedro: Don't be bashful.
Eric: ...and is just waiting to ask
it.
Audience: For Miss Harrison...in the first
two films was there any scenes of yours that didn't make it into the final film
that you would have liked in?
Linda: I don't remember but there probably
were a few scenes that I would have liked to have had in the final cut. But I
can't remember.
Eric: Anyone else? It was a good question
though. Actually, I think I can fill in the gaps on one of those. There was
originally in the first film a scene written where they established that Nova
was pregnant with Taylor's child, Charlton Heston's child...
Linda: Oh yeah...
Eric: And Michael Wilson, who was the main
writer on the first film, said that the scene had been taken out because the Fox
executives were concerned about it being too risque.
Linda: I believe Heston did not like the idea
of me getting pregnant. That would mean that we got intimate in one of those
cells, you know. He didn't like the idea. And I think that was a good
choice.
Ron Harper: Well, he was probably too busy
cleaning his guns. NRA president!

.html Ok, I'm back in this group, although it may be temporary... Last
night, I posted this message in "the other group", and I felt it
should be posted here too... Rory is right when he says there are
bigger issues in Apedom than some petty infighting between two groups!
Whatever your feelings are on the group(s) forget that for now... I'm
sure you're all aware that Stoddard at FOX said (A BIG) "IF" they do
anymore APES dvds it won't be until '04 "at the earliest"... I was
pissed when I read that. I mean I was hoping for AT LEAST a 35th
anniversary edition of PLANET! Jeff is also probably right that all
FOX has on their minds are the ALIENS/PREDATOR projects, and may base
the public's taste for APES on sales of those... Who knows... But I
know I wanted a "5 STAR"/Special Edition of PLANET, and a "Director's
Cut" of CONQUEST and we aren't getting it, at least not in '03...
Anyway, here is what I posted in the other group last night, and I'm
posting it here in hope that at least a few of you will write in and
request this stuff be put on DVD...
To all in the group... It has recently come to my attention that FOX
has said there will be no more editions of the APES films on DVD
until "2004 at the earliest"... To me that's a slap in the APES
faces... 2003 is the 35th anniversary of the release of POTA (the
film) and the 40th anniversary of Boulle's "Monkey Planet" book,
which was of course the source material for PLANET... Being their
anniversaries, I was hoping they would have at least had a "special
edition" of Planet, maybe even a "5 STAR" edition, but they (Fox)
have decided to stop doing "5 STAR" editions of their films, and with
the announcement of "No more Apes DVDs until 2004 'at the
earliest'..." it's obvious they're not planning any type of
anniversary edition(s) either.
What this means to those who enjoy the films is this: It's very
unlikely we will ever see any type of APES DVDs releases with "lost
footage", commentary tracks, etc... No BATTLE with the Alpha-Omega
bomb footage and extended scenes, and more than likely no "Director's
Cut" of CONQUEST... With no more film reissues, it's pretty sure that
RETURN to the POTA won't see the light of day on DVD either...
Could you drop a line to these two and request that they do "special
editions" of the APES films:

I suspect this is the case. While I can't say that Battle is my

others do, and it was the first one I saw.
I wonder if it works in reverse too? Escape was the last one I got to

Ok, you two ARE entitled to your opinions, but I actually LIKE
BENEATH, quite a bit actually... I'd maybe rank it as my second
choice (tied with CONQUEST). I can see where it is the top choice of
a few of the "voters" in here... I'd say the # 1 reason I like it is
because it's the only sequel actually set "ON" the Planet of the
Apes... That's a big plus right there...
That "war mongering General" What's not to like about him? (OK, in
reality he probably IS the facist Rory has accused him of being, and
all of that...)He's one of my favorite APES characters though... As
for the "fake" Cornelius, yes I wish Roddy had taken a few days off
from his movie being made in England and had come back to play
Cornelius, but they did what they had to do,which was get a
replacement. One of my biggest problems with the casting choice was
that he was TOO TALL! For the few that have said that it wasn't until
years later that they didn't know it wasn't Roddy In BENEATH, that
was a big give away right there I always thought... But face it, for
the short amount of time he was on screen, Watson did a "passable"
job, though not great...
The Mutants, here I kinda agree depending on my mood. I always
thought they "were" a little too telepathic, and the illusion stuff
did get outta hand at times... BUT without the illusion creating
abilities, there would not be that cool scene with the crucified
Gorillas, and the bleeding Lawgiver, so that makes up for it... But
as I said, there are times I just wish they hadn't been "so"
telepathic...
I agree that the background masks will always be a problem, and it
bugs the hell outta me that one of the shots used so much is that
shot of the pullover masks Gorillas in the arena (The shot used on
the Famous Monsters of Filmland cover, that bootleg t-shirt, and the
recent postcard set to name a few...)I hate the fact that some of
those pullovers are "focused" on so much in the Forbidden Zone
hallucination scene...They should have just grouped all the made up
Soldiers together for that shot... Same with the shot of them leaving
Ape City... But we can't undo that and we're stuck looking at them...
Ok, that said, you know what bugs me about BENEATH's actual makeups:
the way that Zira doesn't look like Zira from PLANET... I wish she
woulda wore that chin piece for one thing, and I wish they woulda
looked at PLANET as a makeup reference to get her to look the same...
(By the way, does anyone know if Kim had the same makeup artist in
BENEATH as she had in PLANET?)
The Underground City... I wish they hadn't had it look so "melted"...
I like the way the Subway station looked for being aged, and the
exterior of the Church looked ok, but the interior... What's up with
all the foam? That's what I don't like about it... I mean if they
were trying to convey that this city was built within the ruins of
the old, it didn't cut it for me. The way the novel describes it, it
says something like that Brent could see "new" built onto the old or
something like that. I didn't get that impression from all that
styrene or whatever it was they used... I can handle the fact that
they lived "under" the atomic ashes/rubble, but I guess I woulda just
did it differently. I have to think of a better way to describe what
I woulda wanted before I post it, so it makes sense...
One more thing... Who was it that said the Steam Bath scene ruined
BENEATH? Were you serious when you said that? I don't think that
scene ruins anything... Its far better than (and makes a lot more
sense than) Taylor using the rifle butt to chop into, and then vanish
into "nothing"...
Anyway, though I agreed with some of what you said, and some I didn't
agree with, I like BENEATH... <.html

That's why it's so great! There are too many happy movies, and not
enough that end with the death of the main characters and the

Ok, you two ARE entitled to your opinions, but I actually LIKE
BENEATH, quite a bit actually... I'd maybe rank it as my second

because it's the only sequel actually set "ON" the Planet of the

That "war mongering General" What's not to like about him? (OK, in

for the "fake" Cornelius, yes I wish Roddy had taken a few days off

that he was TOO TALL! For the few that have said that it wasn't until

was a big give away right there I always thought... But face it, for
the short amount of time he was on screen, Watson did a "passable"

The Mutants, here I kinda agree depending on my mood. I always

Gorillas, and the bleeding Lawgiver, so that makes up for it... But
as I said, there are times I just wish they hadn't been "so"

I was the one who complained about the steam
bath scene ( I was also kidding when I said something like "it ruined an
otherwise perfect film"). I have the same reaction to the steam bath I do to the
"primitive" apes in "Escape" and "Conquest"; it brings it down to an
unacceptible level. I agree with the other criticisms you made but none of them
make me cringe (there's bad pullover masks in the original, too). Those ape
suits make me cringe and I think are a large reason for the perception of some
people that the films are "B" movies. Bill Blake said they wanted the ape
performers (some brothers, I forget their name) and the deal was they wanted to
wear their own suits. Of course that's not the deal with the steam bath, but the
full body suits look ridiculous. They should have done that scene in another
setting and saved the steam bath for Burke and Virdon (for Kassidy's sake). - -

Welcome back, Cougar. Another thing about
that Stoddard thing, he said they're considering putting the "Alien Nation" TV
show on DVD. That says to me that maybe the POTA TV show sold satisfactorily for
them. Most of their successful TV collections are recent or current shows, but
AN is over 10 years old, it's sci-fi and was considered a short-lived "failure".

Well, they are "bad" looking but not quite "that" bad looking, not to
me anyway... Now Caesar and those "Ex-Borneo" orangutans, not to
mention those HORRIBLE primitives in ESCAPE, they are that bad...
Ursus and Zaius, I can handle them... I mean Zaius is setting down
and covered with towels anyway, and when Ursus is walking, it's not
that long. It bothers me more that I can see that other Gorilla's
wrist when he's pouring the water than the way the Gorillas
themselves look.
Just be glad they didn't look like the artist had them drawn in the
