Yeah, that's Jerry's kid.  He hung out during the recording sessions for PLANET when he was a kid.  Lucky kid!

Subject: [Planet of the Apes] The group

I am going to attempt to bring new news every Monday on various Ape projects (well, Monday here is Sunday nearly everywhere else...).

One Monday I'll give you an update of the activities of the Official International Planet of the Apes Fan Club.  I'm thinking maybe on the same day I'll call for updates on where Ape Chronicles and Simian Scrolls are at.....you OK with that Jeff and John?  Maybe also a web-site update too???  Mez, Kass???
These are good ideas, especially as far as the fan publications go... Maybe the "publishers" of the fan mags could also ask for ideas, etc. of what people might like to see, or see if anyone can give any insights into what they're working on...
Then the next Monday will be about Collectibles....classic stuff, what's in the making (Apemania, Chris Hight's etc.
The following Monday would be good to dedicate to Fanfic....maybe get a run down on what people are doing?
These too are good ideas... I'm all for these updates and the collectibles info day...
Ideas on this anyone?

Maybe also a web-site update too???  Mez, Kass???
It's fine by me, but it doesn't get updated all that often.

However, since we're on the subject, most if not all of the annoying pop-ups on the site are gone now.  And I'll be putting the theme music up on the site when I update it next. I'd really like to do something with those recordings of the tv show stories, too.

Anybody have ideas or material they want to display, let me know.

I'm currently looking for some fan fic someone named "Ford" wrote for the tv series.  I know she wrote at least 2 or 3, and I don't have any name but Ford.  Her stuff appeared in some fanzines.  I don't know if they're good or not.

  Here are the issues I plan to have out first. I've been working on them as "theme" issues:

    3 issues on the Burton flick. # 1 is the development of the movie, a history from Adam Rifkin in '88 through production and release of Burton's flick 13 years later, a history of Fox and an analysis of the blockbuster mentality in hollywood, how good franchises go bad. # 2 will spotlight the hype and the spinoff toys, comics, etc. of the new movie. An issue-length compilation of the stuff after the release of the movie. Anyone who has a list of what Jun Planning put out would be helpful. # 3 will look at the careers of the people who made POTA2001, with special emphasis on Burton and his other franchise, "Batman".
  The next 2 will be about the other folk who developed the new "Apes". # 4 will be about Oliver Stone and Peter Jackson (Stone's POTA script had a "Lord of the Rings" flavor and Jackson went on to do "Lord of the rings", so "Rings" will be touched on as well). # 5 will cover Adam Rifkin, Chris Columbus and James Cameron, with reviews of the scripts that developed and an article about Eric Braeden, who was in "Titanic".
  The next couple issues will be "Apes" classic. # 6, titled "Pros and Cons", will be my personal experiences at conventions, being made up as an ape by Bill Blake, going to John Chambers' birthday, etc., and some of my interviews (Booth Colman, Bobby Porter, Don Pedro Colley). # 7 will be about Classic Apes' comeback from the 30th Anniversary, on. The new toys, a list of magazine articles, what have you.
  After that I will probably do the science issue and the Armageddon issue. I'm trying to do the research-heavy issues first so I can get rid of my files. So, that's that. - - - Jeff

As promised, here is the latest:

COMIC:

The first part of the comic (pages 1 - 3) are inked and on their way to me (should have them in my hands any second now).

The 4th page is fully pencilled and pages 5 and 6 roughed out.

Also included in the package is a copy of a sketch Neil did of some female apes. After one of the discussions the other week on the group site about the lack of 'other' types of females, other than chimps ever being seen, Neil was inspired to have a go at drawing some. He has asked me to scan these and post to the group.  I will do this shortly....my scanner is working now but I am unable to convert the images to jpeg.  I am working on this as we speak so please be patient.

MEDICOM:

As nost of you realise, I spoke to a Medicom representative but sadly lost a lot in the interpretation so I did not get all the answers I sought.  I have a friend in Japan who speaks very good English....I will be relaying the unanswered questions to him to pass on.  Essentially, Medicom no longer has the License to do POTA figures, so dreams of a Limited Edition Fan Club Character have been smashed!

FOX:

The QUICK brown Fox?  Nah, just quick to try making a buck.  Still waiting to hear back from them about:

(1) what deleted scenes/altenate editions exist and whether they have any plans to (or NOT to?) ever release them;

(2) whether the Fan Club can obtain a Limited Fan Club License to produce a small run of:

(a) Deleted Scenes;
(b) Altenate Versions;
(c) Animated Series

...on VHS or DVD.

Still waiting...........

I have a phone number I'll be trying shortly...I'll get back to you.

Just a reminder...the Official International Planet of the Apes Fan Club is a Non-Profit organisation dedicated to getting down to the level of the fans and determining what they want....so let me know if there is anything you want!  It is also a central focal point for ape fans to bring them together and let them know what is out there.  to join, just send your mailing details to: whitty@... or Michael Whitty, 25 Hilder Street, WESTON  ACT  2611 AUSTRALIA.  Membership is free.

There is as yet no paper publication related to the club, and I am not planning to ever take on publishing a Fanzine.  However, there is an active Fanzine, Simian Scrolls, published by John Roche in the UK.  There is also another Fanzine that has not been published for some time, but Jeff K has been furiously gathering material for many new issues, so be prepared for Ape Chronicles to be back in circulation soon.  John and Jeff are both members of the potaDG (Planet of the Apes Discussion Group) and I hope they will offer updates and subscription information.  Maybe we could even go through back issues and offer past articles to the group for discussion???

Cheers

Michael

I think it may be one of the 36 (?) "Moments" they are promoting on
the cover...I could not find anything else about it when I clicked on

    >

    *** FSM's "critic-at-large" Jeff Bonds, who wrote the liner notes for
    the complete soundtrack/score release, mentions (among other things)

    1. "the eerie moaning of a bass slide whistle"
    2. "the use of metal mixing bowls as percussion instruments"
    3. "we hear the martial call of a ram's horn"
    4. "the bizarre hooting of the Brazilian cuika, an instrument used to
    recreate the hysterical vocalizations of apes"
    5. "a grim, rhythmic march in grinding low strings, offset by bells
    and water-drop bars"

    All of the above, of course, are used in addition to the standard
    percussion/brass/woodwind/string instruments of an orchestra.

    By the way, I like the way Goldsmith's score has musical "sound
    effects" accentuating the blinking lights inside the ANSA ship's
    cabin in the "Crash Landing" bit, after the ship splashes down in
    Dead Lake and the camera pulls back into the interior of the cockpit.
    Goldsmith seems to be timing his musical cues to the blinking rate of
    those "emergency lights". It's a brief bit, but it goes to show how
    meticulous Goldsmith was about matching the music to the on-screen
    action; he doesn't just "phone it in".
    I wonder if the DVD of "TIMELINE" (which'll probably be released
    about a year from now, after the theatrical run) will include
    an "alternate cut" of the movie with the rejected Goldsmith score,
    just so we can all compare how the movie WOULD have been with how it
    ended up. Similarly, I'd like to see an alternate cut of "2001: A
    SPACE ODYSSEY" but with the music that Kubrick commissioned yet
    rejected in favor of using Classical pieces.

    Patrick

    P.S. By the way, the word "cue" in the POTA soundtrack liner notes
    (in the section discussing the music from "The Hunt") is
    misspelled "cud"--evidently, Mr. Bonds' left middle finger, in
    attempting to hit the "e", accidentally hit the "d" instead, and the
    proofreader didn't catch the mistake.
    And, regrettably, two of the photos are printed backwards (Taylor
    wearing his "ANSA" uniform--the patches should've clued 'em in! And
    the pic on the last page of the booklet, of Taylor standing arms-
    crossed beside the statue of the Lawgiver--the glyphs on the
    Lawgiver's garb are backwards).
    The inclusion of ALL of the original score (of the 1st film), though,
    more than makes up for these minor glitches. Too bad they didn't make
    it a 2-disc set and include ALL of the music of "ESCAPE", rather than
    a "suite" of its highlights. Ah well... maybe FSM will treat us POTA
    junkies to a release of the entire "ESCAPE" score, just as they did
    the scores to "BENEATH" and "CONQUEST/BATTLE". While they're at it,
    it'd be nice to get more music from the POTA TV series, AND from the
    cartoon, "RETURN". At least the title music from the latter, if not
    anything more.
    In the TV episode "The Interrogation" (if my memory serves), the big
    fight scene near the end is based on some of Goldsmith's music from
    the original movie. I haven't watched it in a while, but the last
    time I did it was noticable. It'd be nice to hear that music on
    another FSM soundtrack release. I wonder if FSM would be interested
    in pursuing any of this? Perhaps, if their POTA sequel scores have
    done well for them, they might be inclined to pursue it. We can only
    hope...

    I'm wondering... to those of you who wrote to Michael Dunn and Peter
    Staddon at Fox, did you receive any response?  I has been about six
    weeks. Maybe I'm impatient.  It seems odd to me that I haven't
    received anything by way of a reply.  Usually you would expect some
    response...  coupons, junk mail, form letter, postcard.  But I have
    received no acknowledgement from either of these men.  Do we have
    the correct address?

    "X-Men 2" had the second biggest opening day ever ($32,500,000) behind
    "Spiderman" ($39 mil), which pushed POTA2001 down to # 9 for opening day
    ($24,612,000). The first "X-Men" was like POTA in that Fox put restraints on
    creativity ("just shoot the damn thing!") which in turn restrained audiences
    from really making it a big hit. On this one they were given much more
    creative freedom ("they" including producer Ralph Winter, who also did POTA)
    and the result was a better movie (I've heard) and better box office. Now,
    if Fox will !!&$##ing learn, when they decide to do another "Apes" after
    the hype for "King Kong" starts (watch), they will hopefully ##$&&!!!ing
    realize they gotta back up the hype with a good movie. I think that can be
    done with or without starting from scratch, as long as they have a good
    script and director. Meanwhile, we've got "Garfield" the cat to look forward
    to. - - - Jeff

      thanks for the feedback, but I am going for the tribal
      look. something other than the standard "tribal"
      stripes or band. I think getting an actual character
      is overboard a bit, and my friends, family, (and
      women!) would look at me like im some sorta
      freak...which I am about pota, and everyone knows it
      already, but to get a tattoo might be a lil much...

      hmmmm although a tattoo of the almighty lawgiver
      Proteus, or maybe Caesar himself would be pretty
      freaking cool!!,

      The assistant to Roger Daltrey of "The Who" has many POTA characters

      Many many years ago, around 1982 or so, Bill Blake did a
      head-casting for me. A year or two later, he borrowed it for a
      movie he was working on, then he moved, then I moved, then I
      lost his number, then life intervened.

      So anyway, somethign receently reminded me of him, so I did a
      Google and found his name in an old post here, and tried to
      contact him, but the e-mail address was no longer valid.

      Does anybody know how to get hold of him? Just for old times'
      sake and to catch up and all that jazz.

      Thanks.

      Well, here goes . . .

      An excerpt from my new screenplay

      Planet of the Rapes...

      Taylor: Who are you?

      Lucius: I'm Dr. Zira's nephew. This seduction was her idea.

      Taylor looks at Nova.

      Taylor: She cums too!

      Lucius: Zira doesn't want your female!

      Taylor: I want her!

      Lucius: Okay, but I'm not joining any of your 3-ways.
      Though I would like to watch.

      Outside in the compound.

      Zira: I told you not to bring the other one!

      Lucius: He wouldn't leave her!

      Zira: Oh alright, but I'm not doing any girl-on-girl stuff!

      I wonder how come that doesn't seem to work?
      I saw the post...something quoting Sid V....was that the one:

      I think one of the big themes of POTA is you don't treat someone like an animal, whether they can talk or not, regardless of their skin ton or amount of hair or number of thumbs, opposable or not.

      "When there are no more niggers or whites.  When there's no more dirt.  When there's just people . . . THAT is when things are going to be okay, right?  You look at people now, right?  And like . . . 99% are Shit!"
         ~~~Sid Vicious~~~~
      I didn't censor it, but by the time I saw it, one of the moderators had toned it down a lot.
      Must say though, I hope this is you being ironic again...as much as I enjoyed the whole punk era, Sid was a junkie who murdered his girlfriend.  So I wouldn't pay TOO much attention to his preachings.
      *** Sexual tension between Taylor & Zira? Reread Boulle's novel, and
      you'll find more than a little *suggestion* that Ulysse Merou and
      Zira have certain "feelings" for each other that Zira just can't
      bring herself to give into. When Ulysse & Nova's child, Sirius, is
      born, Zira says, "Ulysse, I sometimes feel this child is also mine!"
      When it's decided that Ulysse, Nova, and their child must leave
      Soror, Ulysse is alone with Zira at one point:
      "Zira!"
      I stop and take her in my arms. She is as upset as I am. I see a tear
      coursing down her muzzle while we stand locked in a tight embrace.
      Ah, what matters this horrid material exterior! It is her soul that
      communes with mine. I shut my eyes so as not to see the grotesque
      face made uglier still by emotion. I feel her shapeless body tremble
      against mine. I force myself to rub my cheek against hers. We are
      about to kiss like lovers when she gives an instinctive start and
      thrusts me away with violence.
      While I stand there speechless, not knowing what attitude to adopt,
      she hides her head in her long hairy paws and this hideous she-ape
      bursts into tears and announces in despair:
      "Oh darling, it's impossible. It's a shame, but I can't, I can't. You
      are really too unattractive!"
      In the movie, Taylor tells her, "Doctor Zira, I'd like to kiss you
      goodbye." And when others (noticably Cornelius) react to this, Zira
      shows a bit of bravado as she agrees to it: "All right! But... you're
      so damned ugly!"
      Nevertheless... she DOES share a kiss with him.
      As Eric Greene's book conclusively shows, the POTA movies were very
      much about race-relations in America (and the world). This show of
      physical affection across species was merely symbolic of mixed-race
      love. Remember how Sammy Davis Jr. applauded the picture, telling
      Arthur Jacobs how it was a great movie about race-relations, etc.?
      Sammy had married a Swedish blonde bombshell--so he KNEW the dangers
      of two people of separate races showing their love IN PUBLIC. He got
      numerous death threats, as I recall, just for falling in love with a
      white woman. The HBO-made movie "THE RAT PACK" tells the story quite
      well.
      Isn't it interesting that this theme was continued in one of Heston's
      other great SF-genre films, "THE OMEGA MAN"? They cast as the non-
      zombified woman with whom the Heston character has a relationship a
      woman of African-American ethnicity. The Richard Matheson novel makes
      no mention of an interracial romance... so this was an
      intentional "hot-button" being pushed by the Corringtons and the
      studio. I wonder if they also thought to present MacDonald (in BATTLE
      FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES) and the white female "Doctor" as an
      *item*? In the edited-out scene just prior to the trip to the
      Forbidden City, she surreptitiously cooks a rabbit for MacDonald and
      Abe ("Teacher"). Is she Abe's squeeze? MacDonald's squeeze?
      That "illegal" non-vegetarian meal--according to the script--occurs
      in MacDonald's house... and the script refers to Doctor as "a
      remarkably pretty girl". Hmmm...
      I'll admit, though, that "PLANET OF THE RAPES" is kinda over-the-
      line. Almost as upsetting is the porn-series called "PLANET OF THE
      GAPES"--if you don't know that THAT title refers to, you're a lucky
      monkey!
      I stop and take her in my arms. She is as upset as I am. I see a tear coursing down her muzzle while we stand locked in a tight embrace. Ah, what matters this horrid material exterior! It is her soul that communes with mine. I shut my eyes so as not to see the grotesque face made uglier still by emotion. I feel her shapeless body tremble against mine. I force myself to rub my cheek against hers. We are about to kiss like lovers when she gives an instinctive start and thrusts me away with violence. While I stand there speechless, not knowing what attitude to adopt, she hides her head in her long hairy paws and this hideous she-ape bursts into tears and announces in despair:
      "Oh darling, it's impossible. It's a shame, but I can't, I can't. You are really too unattractive!"
      Thank you Patrick!  I'm sure both Kim and Heston read the original novel\ as well.  I was going to bring that up but I'm not the typist that you are.  I don't think, even in French, you casually call someone Darling!
He got numerous death threats, as I recall, just for falling in love with a white woman. The HBO-made movie "THE RAT PACK" tells the story quite well.>>
      Slappy, and I call him that with the utmost respect as a reference to the great comedian Slappy White, was very perceptive for a one-eyed man.  I myself have had a Korean girlfriend and a Latin wife.  If you love someone it doesn't matter what they look like.  If you didn't pick up on that theme you're just watching more adventures with the talking monkeys.
      here's one that didn't make it.
      how did the subjuct up there get changed to talking about
      porn...i must have missed something!! Ape Porn
      ?
      As I rightly remember, the drawing of the females in the market
      touched off a discussion about the roles of females in ape society.
      This then lead to a discussion about ape females in general. Then
      someone, not me mind you, made a comment about Ari being hot, or
      something like that. Which caused Michael to freak on the "ick'
      Animal" factor involved in trans-special dating (I still don't know
      how to spell SPECIES - IAL without it becoming SPECIAL -- maybe
      Patrick knows) Which apparently is not a problem in movies like Star
      Trek, as long as they look like an animal that isn't such a close
      relative as apes. This then lead to the discussion of the undertones
      of interracial dating in POTA, and then doubled back to the under
      current of sexual tension between Zira and Taylor throughout the
      film, though it was more of a subtext (read between the lines) than
      the book. This then lead to the discourse on porno parody titles
      i.e. Planet of the Gapes. I think if I now mention the soft-core
      girl-on-girl Playmate of the Apes the topic is pretty much covered
      and can be left to the archives. Do let me know if I left anything
      out. Now if you'll excuse me I have a Japanese final to study for.
      Perhaps we can put this thread in a time capsule. I'm sure most of
      it was already covered after Wahlberg started that rumor about Leo &
      Ari.
      Elusive African Apes: Giant Chimps or New Species?
      John Roach
      for National Geographic News
      April 14, 2003
      A mysterious group of apes found in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa has scientists and conservationist scratching their heads. The apes nest on the ground like gorillas but have a diet and features characteristic of chimpanzees. The apes are most likely a group of giant chimpanzees that display gorilla-like behavior. A far more remote possibility is that they represent a new subspecies of great ape. Researchers plan to return to the region later this month to collect more clues to help resolve the mystery. The detective story began in 1908 when a Belgian army officer returned home with several gorilla skulls from near the town of Bili on the Uele River and gave them to the Belgium's Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. In 1927 the museum's curator classified the skulls as a new subspecies of gorilla, Gorilla gorilla uellensis.
      A remote camera trap captured this shot of a "Bondo mystery ape" in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most experts believe the unusual band of apes are giant chimpanzees that display gorilla-like behavior. One countervailing theory, however, holds that the band represents a new subspecies of great ape.
      Photograph copyright Karl Ammann
      Intrigued by the subspecies, Colin Groves, now an anthropologist at the Australian National University in Canberra, examined the skulls in 1970 and determined that they were indistinguishable from western gorillas, one of the two known species of gorilla. No further specimens of this gorilla from Bili have since been found. In 1996, Swiss-born, Kenya-based wildlife photographer and conservationist Karl Ammann embarked on a quest to rediscover the mysterious gorillas. To date, Ammann has not found the gorilla. But he has collected a wealth of information including skulls, ground nests, hair and fecal samples, footprints, and, most recently, photographs of what appears to be a chimpanzee that behaves like a gorilla. Scientific analysis of this data is still being conducted. Ammann awaits the results before making an official announcement about the finds. Meanwhile, he continues to recruit scientists to study the case. Shelly Williams, an independent primate behavior specialist in Atlanta, Georgia, who has a doctorate in experimental psychology, spent two months in the northern Democratic Republic of Congo last year trying to determine the identity of these apes. She said "at the very least, we have either a new culture of chimps that are unusually large or hybrids with unusual behaviors." Williams and Groves will meet Ammann in Kenya this month before traveling to the Congo to conduct further studies on the mysterious apes.
      Ground Nesting Chimp?
      Since Ammann launched his quest, he has led expeditions into the Bili forest in the northern Democratic Republic of Congo where the original skulls were recovered. On his first trip, Ammann recovered a skull which had a pronounced ridge on its forehead characteristic of gorilla. The rest of the measurements link the skull to that of a chimpanzee. For the next several years civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo made travel to the Bili forest difficult. Ammann recruited a bush meat hunter from Cameroon to visit and survey the area. The hunter returned with photographs and reports of gorilla ground nests in an area north of Bili. In 2000, Ammann returned to the area described by the bush meat hunter with a group of ape researchers. Although they did not find a live ape, the group did stumble across several well-worn ground nests in swampy river beds. Ground nests are characteristic of gorillas. Chimpanzees are thought to prefer to sleep in trees. However, an analysis of feces found in the nests suggests that whatever left them was eating a diet rich in fruits, a diet characteristic of chimpanzees, not gorillas. Other evidence collected from the site includes hair samples, which have been sent out to various laboratories for DNA analysis. The initial results indicate they belong to a chimpanzee. All of this evidence is causing the researchers to believe that what Ammann has found is a chimpanzee that behaves like a gorilla. "It is a chimpanzee," said Esteban Sarmiento, a functional anatomist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York who traveled to the region with Ammann in 2000. "There are presently three recognized subspecies of common chimpanzee Pan troglodytes and it could represent a fourth subspecies or change our present understanding of where to draw the divisions between subspecies."
      Giant Chimps
      Local hunters in the region added to the mystery when they told Ammann and his colleagues about two kinds of chimpanzees in the region. Normal chimps, so-called "tree-beaters," are easily killed with poisonous arrows when they feed in trees. Another, large chimpanzee seldom climbs trees and does not succumb to the poison arrows shot by the hunters. Called "lion killers," these big chimpanzees flee through the thick forest and disappear when shot at by hunters. Evidence for these giant chimpanzees collected by Ammann includes a photograph of a cadaver alongside the hunter that killed it and casts of some large footprints. The pronounced ridge, called a sagittal crest, on the skull that Ammann found in 1996 is thought to be formed to support large jaw muscles, an indication of large body size. "Giant chimpanzees occasionally occur here and there in the central and eastern subspecies, but evidence so far indicates that Karl [Ammann] may have a population of giants in his area," said Groves. "Presumably their giantism is relevant to their ground nesting behavior." This group of what appear to be a distinct culture of ground-nesting chimpanzees is the now focus of Ammann's research. "Work has started on habituating one of the ground nesting chimp groups. This is done by provisioning them with sugar cane," he said. This habituation will allow the researchers to document this new culture of chimpanzee as the researchers await the results of nuclear DNA analysis to determine if what they have is indeed a new subspecies of chimpanzee or simply a unique culture. Either way, the scientists are intrigued. "Discovering an isolated group of apes exhibiting unusual cultural behaviors is just as important as identifying new DNA profiles. That's why continuous observation, habituation, and surveying are so important," said Williams. Additionally, researchers have not yet given up on the possibility of finding gorillas in the area. "I would think there is a strong possibility that south of Bili on the other side of the Uele River there may be gorillas, and this would seem an important area to turn our attention to," said Sarmiento.
      Irony?  I fail to see anything ironic about posting a post I just posted.  Especially when it mentions you by name in the post.  But I may have been mistaken about the control freak thing.  I think it's Jeff who feels the need to break out his censor stamp every time I get on a roll.  Makes me feel like Rory!  I hope I'm not that bad.
      1. I'm pretty sure "trans-species" is correct, M'lud T.
      2. "OMEGA MAN" & "SOYLENT GREEN"... 'geek heaven'? Sure, why not!
      It'll be 'Chuck-a-riffic'... or is that 'Hestonderful'? By the way,
      Rory (you "LOGAN'S RUN"-basher, you), the main reason the movie
      version of "LOGAN'S RUN"--as opposed to the book--has the citizens
      being killed off via the 'Carrousel'/'Flame-Out' ritual, rather than
      just going to a 'Sleepshop' and being painlessly put to Sleep (like
      an unwanted doggie at the Pound), is because of the way they
      portrayed the euthanization of Edward G. Robinson in "SOYLENT GREEN".
      Since the novel "LOGAN'S RUN" (written, of course BEFORE the making
      of "SOYLENT GREEN") portrays a similar type of euthanizing procedure,
      MGM felt it had to make the process different for their film version
      of "LOGAN'S RUN". As much as I dig the book, the 'Carrousel' change
      was a good one, insofar as they were forced to change a lot of other
      stuff anyway (for budgetary reasons--SFX limitations).
      3. That "giant chimpanzee" creature: interesting! Once they do all
      the DNA work on it, I wonder how much it'll rewrite the book on
      the "recent" divergence of Man, Chimp, and Gorilla from the common
      ancestor, which DNA evidence suggests lived around 4-to-5 Million
      years ago? Perhaps the "common ancestor" first branched off into the
      Gorillas and the Giant Chimps, and then the Giant Chimp (still very
      much like a Gorilla) branched off into the Chimp/Human group.
      Or... maybe... just MAYBE... some goofy bastards purposely did some
      cross-breeding of Chimps and Gorillas to create a gorilla-like Chimp
      (or, a chimp-like Gorilla). How many of these creatures ARE there,
      anyway? They've only been able to estimate the (sadly, DECLINING)
      numbers of Chimps and Gorillas in Africa--I wonder what this new
      information will bring to bear on that. I hope that NAT'L GEOGRAPHIC,
      SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, DISCOVER magazine (etc.) will do in-depth
      articles on this "giant chimp" species.
      4. Say, Jeff! Do you need me to send you a Money Order before you'll
      get your arse over to Kinko's and make that copy of the "CONQUEST"
      script for me? As long as it won't cost me an arm & a leg, I'll be
      more than happy to do so (not that I'd enjoy cutting off my own arm,
      Jeff and Mike,
      I am pleased as PUNCH that you guys like the way I've done the site.  It's fun but no lie it takes time.  I'm thinking of breaking it down (the misc. page, that is) into 3 different pages.  Maybe it won't take so long to load.  Of course, if you've got dss that's not a big issue but otherwise, it could be.  What do you guys think?
        Yeah, your site is top notch. Very nice subdued choice of color. Especially like the collectibles pages (never heard of the felt Galen and Urko). How much of that stuff do you own? Liked the TV Guide preview page, Galen looks Chinese. One thing, though; you have a quote from Roddy about the show that you credit to "Behind the POTA"; I think that was from one of the Sci-Fi Channel broadcasts.
      Have you considared doing one for the movies?
      --
      No I haven't.  It takes a lot of time, plus I still have stuff to do on the tv site.  Mark has the "ape" font, plus a font called "Simian Scrolls" and he's doing some headers for me. I don't suppose anyone has those tv series records transcribed anywhere?  I'd love to put them up, somehow.  Too big to put up as sound files. I could always put up excerpts....
      Although I COULD move that miscellaneous not tv related page to just such a movie site.  I don't know... anybody have screen grabs?  How would you put it together, a page for each movie? Quotes? If you guys want to do a lot of the legwork, like writing down quotes and collecting pictures, we could do it.  But hey, Alex is putting together a pota site, right?
      Jeff, as far as my quote for Roddy... I got it from a tape Rory sent me.  Rory, are you out there? Where did that extended Roddy interview come from?
      And also Rory,  I watched part of Robinson Crusoe on Mars this weekend before a fight broke out amongst the kids. Then they were yelling for cartoons so we watched that instead.  So I haven't seen much of the movie yet, but it is strange in its oarallels to POTA (so far as I've seen it).  There was even a particular scene that reminded me of one of the POTA scenes.
      I'll get back to you when I've seen the rest of it.
      Kass
      Hey Jeff, you know what?  I think Roddy would like the site, too.  Felt Galen looks ridiculous to me.  There's a felt Zaius, I think, in the potadg files.  As far as owning that stuff... almost none of it.  The TV Guide,  the novelizations, 6 scripts, the Topps cards, some Adventure comics, the tv series records, the annuals, Starlog, two different copies of the original novel and other magazines are most of what I own.  I'd like some Kubricks and maybe one or two of those er, uh, shit, forget the name.  The little ones, the detail figurines.
      Whatever.
      No I haven't.  It takes a lot of time, plus I still have stuff to do on the tv site.  Mark has the "ape" font, plus a font called "Simian Scrolls" and he's doing some headers for me. I don't suppose anyone has those tv series records transcribed anywhere?  I'd love to put them up, somehow.  Too big to put up as sound files. I could always put up excerpts....
      Although I COULD move that miscellaneous not tv related page to just such a movie site.  I don't know... anybody have screen grabs?  How would you put it together, a page for each movie? Quotes? If you guys want to do a lot of the legwork, like writing down quotes and collecting pictures, we could do it.  But hey, Alex is putting together a pota site, right?
      Jeff, as far as my quote for Roddy... I got it from a tape Rory sent me.  Rory, are you out there? Where did that extended Roddy interview come from?
      And also Rory,  I watched part of Robinson Crusoe on Mars this weekend before a fight broke out amongst the kids. Then they were yelling for cartoons so we watched that instead.  So I haven't seen much of the movie yet, but it is strange in its oarallels to POTA (so far as I've seen it).  There was even a particular scene that reminded me of one of the POTA scenes.
      I'll get back to you when I've seen the rest of it.
      Well, someone asked if Mr. Sawyer would like to write a POTA novel
      and/or the next movie. So I asked him. This was his response...
      Hi, Wendy
      I adore classic PLANET OF THE APES --- the original five films; I
      wasn't nearly as fond of the recent reimaging, but I do have a soft
      spot for the series (which I recently watched again on DVD). PLANET
      OF THE APES is everything good science fiction should be;  it's is
      full of sense of wonder.
      I'd love to have a chance to work in the PLANET OF THE APES universe;
      I can't imagine they'd let me write the next film, but if the chance
      presents itself, I'd love to do so.
      Best wishes,
      Rob Sawyer
      ................
      In my oppinion Mr. Sawyer would be excellent in writing a pota novel.
      He has a wonderful way of touching upon religion, science and the
      social issues of our day; something of which the very fabric the
      classic POTA was inspired. In "Humans" he even brings up Charlston
      Heston on the gun issue. Like I said, you have to read
      the "Neanderthall Parallax" to get a full jist in what in the hell I
      am talking about.
      .htmlTarzan's Cheeta's Life as a Retired Movie Star
      By John Roach
      for National Geographic News
      May 9, 2003
      Many Hollywood stars retire in the oasis of Palm Springs, California where they while away their golden years splashing paint on canvases, taking leisurely strolls, playing the piano, and flipping through the pages of magazines.
      Such is the life of 71-year-old Cheeta, the chimpanzee of Tarzan fame who celebrated his birthday a month ago.
      "He's the world's oldest chimp and in excellent condition," said Dan Westfall, who cares for Cheeta and several other retired showbiz primates at the Cheeta Primate Foundation in Palm Springs. Cheeta's "world's oldest" title is noted in the Guinness Book of World Records.
      Cheeta and actor Lex Barker in November, 1950.
      Chimpanzees in the wild tend to live for 40 to 45 years and to the mid 50s in captivity, according to chimpanzee researchers.
      Activists for the proper care and treatment of chimpanzees and other nonhuman primates applaud Cheeta's age record, but caution against celebrating the lifestyle of chimpanzees that were stars in the entertainment industry.
      "Would you go to a movie if you knew the child actors had been kidnapped and been forced through abuse by their kidnappers to perform silly, demeaning acts?" asks Roger Fouts, co-director of the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
      Activists say that retired entertainment chimpanzees engage in human behaviors such as watching television and reading magazines because they were deprived of a natural lifestyle and were instead trained to behave like humans, often through physical abuse.
      "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that they are pretty dysfunctional," said Gloria Grow, co-founder of the Fauna Foundation which cares for neglected and abused animals in Quebec, Canada.
      For example, Grow said that several of the chimpanzees in her foundation's care, including those that were in the entertainment industry, do not know how to have intercourse or how to look after their young.
      "It is common scientific knowledge that taking mothers from babies has very serious consequences for the psychological well-being of both the mother and the infant, yet this is what happens to every trained chimpanzee," said Fouts.
      The Good Life?
      Abe Karajerjian, a biological anthropologist who works with Westfall in the caretaking of the animals at the Cheeta Primate Foundation, says Cheeta and his companions are provided with an environment and social structure that is more suitable to their species rather than perpetuating their human-like lifestyles and behaviors.
      "We just love them and love to do things for them," he said. "They made tons of people happy, they had to endure a lot to make people happy, and we want to give back to them, provide them with friends."
      Westfall, a comedian and actor, adopted Cheeta about 10 years ago from his uncle Tony Gentry, an animal trainer who worked in Hollywood and discovered Cheeta while on an animal talent scouting trip to Africa in the 1930s.
      The 4 foot (1.2 meter) tall, 142 pound (53 kilogram) chimpanzee starred in 12 Tarzan movies and had his last role 36 years ago in the 1967 musical film Doctor Doolittle.
      Cheeta now spends his days socializing with other apes and human caregivers. At times he seems fascinated by looking at other animals on television and in the pages of magazines like National Geographic, said Karajerjian.
      On a few occasions the media has spotted Cheeta taking a ride in the car with Westfall, who said that Cheeta "likes to go through the drive-thru and get a hamburger and a Coke." Cheeta's staple diet consists of fresh fruit, vegetables, and monkey chow, which is a nonhuman-primate version of dog food.
      In his earlier years Cheeta had a penchant for beer and cigars, reportedly drinking several cold ones a day. Westfall and Karajerjian said booze and smoke have not been a part of the old chimp's life since he came into their care ten years ago. "Where he lives now nobody smokes and drinks," said Karajerjian. "I hate smoking and drinking and so why would I offer it to apes?"
      At the sanctuary the apes are provided with a variety of activities to stimulate their intellect and curiosity. One of the activities is painting, which Karajerjian says allows chimpanzees to mimic their innate behavior of inventing and using tools. Westfall says that Cheeta has developed a particular talent as an abstract artist and has trademarked Cheeta's creations as "Ape-stract."
      Cheeta uses a paintbrush and bright colors for his creations which are full of sweeps, swirls, and straight lines. "They are very pretty, actually," said Westfall, who sells his companion's work for $125 a piece. The proceeds go to support the Cheeta Primate Foundation, which Westfall started to raise money for unwanted showbiz animals.
      Entertainment Abuse
      Cheeta is a rarity among chimpanzee actors in that he was used for films into his 30s. "Most of the chimpanzees used in the entertainment industry are used when they are quite young," said Rick Bogle of the Primate Freedom Project in Santa Barbara, California.
      The organization works for the protection of nonhuman primates. Chimpanzees rarely act beyond the age of ten because they become less manageable and less willing to follow directions, said Bogle. When the chimpanzees are retired, many of them are sold into biomedical research. Gentry, Cheeta's previous owner, feared a research laboratory was Cheeta's destination so he had asked in his will that Cheeta be put to rest.
      Westfall talked his uncle out of having Cheeta put to rest by promising to take good care of the chimp. Ex-entertainment chimpanzees are unfit for zoos, said Fouts, because they do not behave like regular chimpanzees. "And often times they are not socialized to other chimpanzees so they would be difficult to integrate into a social population," he said.
      Westfall said primate researcher Jane Goodall inspired him to start the foundation for unwanted showbiz primates. The other chimpanzees, orangutans, and monkeys in his care have starred in television commercials, nightclubs, and theaters, but none reached the star status of Cheeta.
      "There are also some from labs that we'd love to get sometime to save their lives and give them a good, healthy home to live in," he said.
      All of the animals in Westfall's care interact on a daily basis and with each other and their human caregivers. Westfall's house is not open to the public, but tour buses and children often stop in front where there is a statue of Cheeta.
      Living Longer
      Terry Wolf, wildlife director at Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Florida, which cares for about 35 chimpanzees, said that captive chimpanzees that were picked up from the entertainment industry and research facilities are living longer because humans are taking better care of them.
      "The quality of health care and diet in the past was traditionally not all that great," he said. Now humans have a better understanding of chimpanzee dietary, physical, and social needs, including the need for interaction to prevent the onset of deadly bouts of depression.
      Little Mama, a chimpanzee who starred in a traveling ice skating show before coming to Lion Country Safari in 1967, is thought to be 65 years old and like Cheeta is in good health. She is social and gets along well with her mates, who she lives with on a series of islands in the drive-through zoo, said Wolf.
      "Old age is something to be celebrated," said Virginia Landau, director of the Jane Goodall Institute's ChimpanZoo in Tucson, Arizona, which coordinates the study of chimpanzees in zoos and other captive settings.
      Subject: Thanks, Jeff! "CONQUEST" script & observations...
      .html
      Jeff, I've got just a few things to say to you...
      1. Thanks a bunch for sendin' along that CONQUEST script!
      2. I like the lil' picture you drew. Izzat supposed to be Caesar? or
      just any ol' chimp?
      3. How much did it cost ya to photocopy? Shipping & handling? Lemme
      know, and I'll cut ya a check.
      And now, a few observations on the CONQUEST screenplay.
      In Scene 32, during the Labor demonstration--right before Caesar
      blurts out "LOUSY HUMAN BASTARDS!"--the script mentions "the newly
      arrived gorilla, ALDO, whose TWO HANDLERS are vainly trying to get
      him into the building". John Jakes' novelization also refers to this
      ape as "a chained ape whom Caesar recognized. The two handlers still
      held the chains that restrained the gorilla Aldo".
      First off, both the script and the novelization (which, of course,
      was based on the script) refer to Aldo as a "gorilla", although when
      the scene was filmed, "Aldo" (in THIS scene) was obviously a
      chimpanzee: both the chimp makeup AND the green jumpsuit testifying
      to that. The DVD subtitler evidently misheard the name "Aldo" (spoken
      by the "two handlers" as "Otto". The script proves, of course, that
      this CHIMP's name was intended to be "Aldo"--evidently, a
      DIFFERENT "Aldo" than the gorilla antagonist of "BATTLE".
      Secondly, I'm sorta mystified as to why John Jakes refers to "Aldo"
      as "a chained ape WHOM CAESAR RECOGNIZED". Caesar has only been in
      this unnamed city for a little while, yet, and there's no previous
      mention of Caesar seeing any 'gorilla-messenger-for-the-Governor',
      although Caesar DOES see various gorilla slaves sweeping with brooms,
      etc. Jakes never elaborates on HOW Caesar recognized him, where he
      had previously seen him, etc. Curious.
      -------------------------------------------------
      Another interesting thing that's in the screenplay yet is NOT in
      either the novelization or on-screen, is in scene 21:
      INT. BOOKSHOP 21
      Caesar and Armando enter the shop as Lisa goes up to the counter
      where a bespectacled LADY BOOKSELLER is seated. Standing patiently to
      one side and behind her is a male ORANGUTAN.
      BOOKSELLER (matter of fact): "Lisa?"
      Lisa proffers a red shopping-card (we shall see more of these).
      BOOKSELLER (reading it; flatly): "'A YOUNG QUEEN FALLS'.... for Mrs.
      Riley."
      She consults a catalog; indicates a tall bookcase to the Orangutan
      behind her. Extends all five fingers of her left hand; and three
      fingers of her right. We PAN Orangutan shuffling to the case. He
      counts five shelves down from the top, and (erroneously) two titles
      from the left: "THE STORY OF SERVANTS' LIB" by Herbert Semhouse
      and "PORN IS DEAD" by Minnie Sokolsky. He hesitates between the
      latter and "A YOUNG QUEEN FAILS" [sic. "FAILS" is a misspelling in
      Dehn's script: should be "FALLS"]; and picks up "PORN IS DEAD" and
      takes to:
      BOOKSELLER (sharply): "No."
      Orangutan halts dead in his tracks.
      BOOKSELLER: "NO!"
      Orangutan cringes helplessly. Bookseller strides irritably to
      bookcase, takes down the right book, slaps it on the counter. Lisa
      picks up the book, turns to go. A look passes between her and Caesar.
      Lisa likes what she sees. As Lisa moves out of the shop:
      BOOKSELLER (to Armando): "Yes?"
      etc.
      In the actual movie, "Mr. Jolly's" bookshop (with address #172 seen
      on the door) has THESE books on the shelf in question:
      1. "THE COLLECT--" [by] 'WALLACE ...' [full title not seen]
      2. "A Young..." [THIS, of course, is the book "A Young Queen Falls"]
      3. "Translations from the CHINESE" by Arthur Waley, ILLUSTRATED BY G.
      LEROY BALDRIDGE
      4. "THE GIFTS..." [by ?; full title not seen]
      5. "...[?]..." [by] 'Glanville' [title not seen]
      It's possible that there is a book to the left of the 1st one ["THE
      COLLECT--"], which the left side of the movie screen cuts off. As in
      the script, the bookseller woman holds up 5 fingers of one hand to
      indicate the shelf (the RIGHT HAND--changed from the script's "left
      hand"), and 3 fingers of the other hand (her LEFT HAND--also changed
      from the script's "her right [hand]"), to indicate the 3rd book from
      the left.
      Interestingly, though, although the book "A YOUNG QUEEN FALLS" is
      indeed mentioned in spoken dialogue AND its title is seen (partly) on-
      screen, there is neither hide nor hair of the OTHER books mentioned
      in the screenplay: "THE STORY OF SERVANTS' LIB" by Herbert Semhouse
      (which John Jakes' novelization also mentions, the title slightly
      different: "The Story of Servant's Lib"--the apostrophe placed
      differently)... and that OTHER book, which I'd never heard mentioned
      before--"PORN IS DEAD" by Minnie Sokolsky.
      "PORN IS DEAD"!
      In the actual movie, the luckless Orangutan bookshop slave mistakenly
      picks out "Translations from the CHINESE" and brings it to the woman
      running the store; but in Paul Dehn's screenplay, the (wrong) book
      that was brought to the desk for Mrs. Riley was "PORN IS DEAD"!
      It's a shame that along with the ultra-violence that was edited out
      of the movie to placate the "family" crowd, they also "neglected" to
      faithfully include this lil' detail from the script. I guess they
      didn't want to have the word "PORN" appear anywhere in the movie! Not
      even as the title of a book declaring it to be "DEAD".
      I wonder... was Dehn trying to further delineate the "future"
      totalitarian society of 1991 by including these specific titles of
      books? "A YOUNG QUEEN FALLS"... is this book a novel? Is it about a
      literal Queen, as in an Arthurian romance? Or, perhaps, does "young
      queen" refer to a youthful homosexual, since "queen" does have that
      other (slang) meaning...?
      "THE STORY OF SERVANTS' LIB"--quite the title for a book in a
      bookshop in a city where the "SERVANTS" in question--the Apes--will
      eventually be "LIB-erated" from bondage by the Ape Moses, Caesar.
      And "PORN IS DEAD"--does this suggest that the State has clamped down
      on 1st Amendment rights, doing away with the production/distribution/
      sale/etc. of Pornography? Or, is the title meant to evoke the
      phrase "GOD IS DEAD"? Given the colorless garb of the humans of the
      city, it 'seems' that there is a Puritanical bent to Breck's society.
      Might not Dehn have been suggesting that an anti-porn movement
      throughout the mid-1970s and the 1980s resulted in a bland,
      colorless "no-porn" society?
      Recall that in the scene immediately prior to the "bookshop" scene
      (Scene 20), a 'Lady' in an outdoor cafe has a gorilla named Frank
      light up her cigarette, and she says, "Thank you, Frank." [She
      inhales and looks at the cigarette thoughtfully.] "Funny. Now that I
      know they won't kill me, I don't enjoy them."
      Years ago, I thought that this line of dialogue meant that
      the 'Surgeon General' of this future/1991 U.S.A. had somehow
      (lyingly) declared cigarettes NOT to be dangerous, cancer-causing,
      etc. And the reason this lady "know[s]" that cigarettes "won't kill"
      her is because that's what the State-propaganda has declared (perhaps
      due to the influence of a 'Tobacco-lobby').
      But I eventually came to interpret the line as if this 'future'
      society had developed to the point where the Tobacco companies were
      forced to produce cigarettes WITHOUT nicotine or tar, rendering
      them "safe" for consumers. By enforcing regulations against the
      formerly cancer-causing product's manufacturers, the State was
      further exercising its control over Society. One might imagine that
      similar State-mandated "quality controls" would be forced on Food
      producers, to remove high-cholesterol substances from the available
      foods citizens could purchase either at a supermarket or at a
      restaurant.
      I imagine that the 'world' of CONQUEST is one where the "War-on-
      Drugs" is fought with vigor, since governments that criminalize
      possession/use of narcotic substances readily create an underground
      economy whereby Organized Crime steps up to the plate to provide
      the "supply" for the inevitable "demand". And THIS is used to justify
      the INCREASED POLICE POWERS of the State--which is seen in evidence
      in CONQUEST, with the police dressed in "stormtrooper"-type uniforms.
      Perhaps there's also an "underground" supply of Pornography, too, to
      offset the "State-war-on-Pornography" that resulted in the publishing
      of the book "PORN IS DEAD"...
      Innnnnnnteresting...
      Patrick
      P.S. Thanks again, Jeff!
        OK, Mark Wahlberg was promoting his new movie "The Italian Job" on the David Letterman Show. I tuned in just IN CASE Letterman ribbed him about POTA2001 and he said, "Don't laugh. I'm getting paid $XXX million for the sequel". Well, it didn't happen. Turns out "The Italian Job" is his third remake in a row. Letterman chided him about it and he said, 'It's not really a remake. I'm not the Remake Kid. I've done a couple of "reimaginings" " This got laughs, including Letterman. Obviously referrences to POTA2001 and "The Truth About Charlie" ("reimagining of the classic "Charade"), both disappointments at the box office and with critics. So POTA2001 is still a laughing stock, not a sequel. It seemed to me that Wahlberg was in denial about the reception of POTA2001. Looks like he's accepted it. For "The Italian Job" he notes they're getting away from special FX and "We're trying to get back to great storytelling". So (maybe) he learned the lesson, but too late for POTA fans. He also says he's got a baby due in August but doesn't name the lady. - - - Jeff
      .htmlWASHINGTON (May 19, 2003) - Chimpanzees are more closely related to people
      than to gorillas or other primates and probably should be included in the human branch of the family tree, a research team says. The idea, sure to spark renewed debate about evolution and the relationship between humans and animals, comes from a team led by Morris Goodman at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit.
      Currently, humans are alone in the genus Homo. But Goodman argues, "We humans appear as only slightly remodeled chimpanzee-like apes." He says humans and chimps share 99.4 percent of their DNA, the molecule that codes for life.
      The report is being published in Tuesday's online issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
      Robert J. Sawyer is a well known Canadian SF writer. He has written a
      number of books "End of Era" "Illegal Alien" "Flashforward" and so
      on. One you might recognize is "The Terminal Experiment' which won
      him the Nebula. He also won many other awards, most of which are
      Canadian. He has a web site but I don't have it with me. You can
      though, find it in one of his books. I highly recommend you read "The
      Neanderthal Parallax". Warning though --- the second book is a bit
      rich as far as adult content is concerned. --- In
