Well, if they do Apes 2 at least it won't be a TIm Burton film, Thank Christ!  He had a couple of good ideas there.  But it's like a couple of peanuts buried in monkey poop!  There are only a couple of directors I would trust to handle that salvage job...Gilliam and Jackson!

Oh yes. I remember those! I also remember watching it on video for the
first time on Mrs. Johnson's TV because she was the only one in
the "Alpha Centura" (Star Trek) club to have a machine and the
connections to get the tape that, these days, would be concidered a
bootleg. Speaking of bloopers, I wonder if POTA has any? I bet Fox has
those stashed away in the archives somewhere. I know that Star Wars
had bloopers. I saw those too at a Star Wars movie marathon during
Worldcon in Denver all thos years ago. Just imagine, Roddy's mouth
peice falls off --- General Aldo about to fall of his horse or runs into
tree. You know, stuff like that.

Yeah, I think a lot of us wish that bad things didn't happen to us.

Not mention road rage. Seeing how the idiot ran over the cat there was
probably no stopping him from hurting you. I hate people that are
heartless. If they are running over poor animals then what's to stop
them from hitting a human being? I would have said that to the cops.
Maybe then, they would have taken the incident a bit more seriously.
Jeez, I can't believe I share the same road with these people.

Yeah but it's back on Earth now.  We don't need visuals.  In fact I for one would welcome a character driven story, rather than relying on effects and Gorilliator battle.  Those battle scenes were lame for a start.  And I'd much rather see any budget going to good actors reading good writing than blowing hundreds of thousands of dollars on a three-second visual.  It used to be when you needed a visual for an establishing shot all you needed was a glass-matt painting and a few feet of film stock.  Now everyone spends a fortune on CG, and to my eye, it doesn't look any better.  Until I saw the behind-the-scenes, I had no idea that Butch and Sundance were jumping off a crane into the lake at the Fox Ranch.

I saw a squirrel ran over yesterday.  That kind of thing makes me feel bad all day -- even when it's someone else -- not to blame the person who did.  I don't think they even knew.  But to be fair, the squirrels were partly to blame.  One squirrel got half-way across the road and then stopped.  He took off at the last second and made it.  But seeing his buddy cross the road made the other one make a break for it and he got nailed.  It was sad, but sometimes I wonder if they're playing squirrel tag, or suicide chicken, or what.  It was in the 20s the night before.  Maybe the first squirrel said, "I can't take another hard winter!" but then chickened out.  And the second squirrel said, "I'll show you how it's done pal!"  Then again maybe squirrels are like rabbits, and the first one was just an annoyed female who was tired of being pestered with sex, and said, "I know how to get this guy off my back!"

Your squirrel story reminds me of song I heard once on the "Pariedog
Companion Show" entitled, "The squirrel with a Death Wish" Won a few
awards.
Anyway, Possums are the same, especially during the night. They get
hypnotized by the headlights. Little do they know that the "Light" isn't a
train but something even worse, a car.

Except for a few things (such as the female chimps) I liked the look of
Burton's film.It showed some imagination. I liked the music; Elfman probably
won't be back if Burton isn't. Burton can command quite a lot of talent. If
the schedule had been decent and they had a screenwriter who grasped that
POTA is science fiction, not a fashion show, they might have had an
excellent film. The next director probably won't have the resources Burton
did. - - - Jeff

I sure hope there is a sequel to Burton's film, I liked it a lot. I wonder if anyone has given consideration to a possible film merger of the original POTA characters and Burton's. I'm picturing a movie poster similar to the cover of the classic X-MEN # 100. Wouldn't it be a cool standoff pic- Ursus/Attar, Zauis/Limbo, Zira/Ari, etc. etc.

All the actors who played the original characters are dead. What's the
point of new actors playing old favorites? Pierce Brosnan as Zauis? I can't
imagine someone else playing Zira. Plus it smacks too much of "Alien vs.
Predator". POTA2001 ended on Earth. That's a good starting point. Keep
Wahlberg for continuity and create a solid sci-fi story. No time travel, no
"Back to the Future" stuff, just an interesting story based on where he
landed. - - - Jeff

The submissions continue to pour in (I like it when people are submissive). This is by far the most successful Brent contest we've ever had. But all good things must come to an end. There's only two weeks left to enter our "Is Brent gay?" contest. For the newbies, the question is this: Brent has Nova all to himself for most of "Beneath". How come he shows hardly any interest in her, or barely even looks at her? I think it's because he's gay (not that there's anything wrong with that). Statistically, with all the POTA characters there are, there should be at least one. When he meets up with Taylor, does he say,"Taylor, you are one lucky man. That Nova is fiiiine! Hubba, hubba!" No, but he sure seems happy to see Taylor and doesn't waste time embracing him. He was never that happy to see Nova. Hmmmmm.
So far, Dan is in the lead, suggesting that Brent, being the scientific person that he is, might be afraid of catching an unknown disease from these strange people. But he could at least try to fashion a condom or use her as eye candy once in a while. But so far Dan's idea seems the best. But there's still time. The winner will receive a Kubrick set. You know, those cute little Japanese ape/Lego-type  scenes that you'd like to have but you'd rather spend the dough on Medicoms? Give Brent an alibi and it's yours. 12/12 is when I will dig through the entries and find a winner. Let's get this stupid s%#@ over with and move on to more sober discussions. - - - Jeff

Of course we'd need new actors- Heston would forget his lines! (just
joking, don't anyone have a heart attack). If an old/new film were
considered, we wouldn't HAVE to use Zauis, Ursus, etc. We could use
characters that look similar with new names. Even those in the
clique don't oppose to Urko looking too much like Ursus, right?

Your thoughts: If they do do away with Burton's characters for the
next POTA movie, and that one is a hit, do you think they would re-
use those characters for a third movie or start fresh again like the
Crow movies- same basic story but different characters, different
circumstances. This would give each "modern" POTA film a different
feel.

Yeah the only really good thing about the Burton ending is it provides the perfect jumping off point for an Apes movie styled after the book.  The only difference is he doesn't speak French. Luckily!  I always thought that the corniest lines from the book were because they just didn't translate from French.  It has all the elements -- they just have to explain how it happened, and I can think of a couple few ideas for that off the top of my head.  It could actually make a compelling plot line.  They just need to drop all that reference humor and play it straight and stop trying to be Space Balls.  That just ruined the last one for me.

I can think of a number of reasons.  Shock, for one.  He's just been in a crash, he lost his Skipper, he encounters some talking apes who have been whipped into a human killing frenzy by their fearless leader, he gets shot.  And then, if that isn't enough he runs headlong into a bunch of nasty telepathic mutants.  If all that doesn't curb your libido I don't know what would.  And, again, maybe he's an old fashioned guy and likes to get to know a girl first before hopping into bed with her.  And then there's the fact that there aren't a lot of beds around.  Sure, he had a wagon full of straw, but even that only had one wall and the gorillas are going to be looking for it.  I guess my point is this.  If this was a Viet Nam movie, and he's part of a two man team sent behind enemy lines to rescue a downed pilot, one of which gets killed right off the bat.  Even if he ran into the hottest North Vietnamese Super Model around, it seems implausible that he's going to stop for a little action until he can get south of the border.  I'm not saying he's gay, impotent, or had it shot off in the war, though that might be the case.  I'm just saying the fight or flight response works better than saltpeter!

Looking similar would be a start, but what you really need are actors that sound similar.  The makeup hides any dissimilar details in appearance, but those voices are unique.  That's why they were chosen.  But Watson did such a good job as McDowall's character, that even though I know there was something not quite right about him, it was years before I knew it wasn't him.

If they do another POTA movie and it's a hit, they will probably continue
using those characters. Many people have a bad taste after the last one, so
I think Fox would try to distance themselves from it with mostly new
characters (plus most of the cast is reportedly not interested in another
one if Burton doesn't do it; helena Bonham Carter is the mother of his
child). Mark Wahlberg had a hit with "The Italian Job", so continue with his
character. They can deal with the Thade thing without Tim Roth coming back
(his character seems to be dead at the end of POTA2001). New characters will
lower the cost, because they won't have to give the others a raise, Markie
can be continuity. And give us a kick ass story, go easy on the ape armies
so the budget won't give Fox a hernia, and if it's a good movie word of
mouth will save the day. The important thing is to make it interesting and
surprising, so definitely not "the same old story". - - - Jeff

I watched the Burton movie yesterday again and I must admit that I
really enjoyed it. It's not the old ones, that I like the most, but
this one is also very good. What I don't like is the ending, but as
you have said I think it's a good starting point for a second movie.
The only acto who should repeat is Whalberg (however you spell it).

Subject: Burton's POTA: its thematic wrong-headedness
.html
Frankly, I wouldn't want to see any more POTA movies unless they have
something even remotely profound to say, thematically. Even the least
of the POTA TV episodes had something to say about Race-relations,
etc., that made it a legitimate part of the Saga. But what did
Burton's flick have to say that was worth saying?

Furthermore, to what extent was Wahlberg's character representative
of the USA, or of "Americanism"? Heston's character was a compelling
protagonist because he was a man of OUR time fleeing from his own
time (in which he didn't feel he belonged) to ANOTHER time and
place... only to find himself in a world turned upside-down. But what
the f*** was it that motivated Wahlberg's "Leo Davidson" character?
He goes after the chimp in the spacepod... for what? Was there
anything profound or compelling about his choice, and the motivating
forces that landed him on Burton's ape-planet?

Let's face it: the mechanics of getting Leo to Burton's ape-planet
are nothing more than sci-fi trappings without any real profound
significance. In contrast, the Taylor mission was plainly one
evocative of so-called "American Imperialism", where the USA intends
to extend its influence out into Outer Space and the far Future,
where "the most precious cargo" they'd brought along, the "lovely
Lieutenant Stewart", was to be their "new Eve" with which the other
astronauts would breed a colony of Americans. All those visible
flags -- on the flight jackets, on the winglets of their ship, the
one that Landon planted in the sand -- further exemplify this theme.
The ending imagery, showing THE icon of Americanism (the Statue) in
ruins, further drives home the thematic thrust of the film: the end-
result of Humanity's self-destructive tendencies, in spite of the
USA's Kennedy-era of spaceflight's "best and brightest" to build a
wonderful Tomorrow.

By making Earth the "planet of the apes", the original film further
drove home the impending HUMAN-made tragedy of our civilization's
downfall. Burton's "planet of the apes", though, is some unknown
alien planet on the other side of a string of weird wormholes,
totally removed from Earth and its own problems. Furthermore, when
Leo gets back to Earth and discovers that Thade had somehow gone back
to Earth (to some unknown time prior to his arrival) and led a
revolution overthrowing Humanity and bringing Apes into the
ascendancy, it beggars plausibility -- after all, the great Apes are
very nearly extinct. The few that aren't being wiped out by poachers
in Africa are living the lives of circus & zoo animals and
research "guinea pigs". Imagine Thade landing in that pod onto a
human-controlled world: how in hell could he lead the FEW surviving
apes in some sort of big-ass war to overthrow Man? The moment he
landed, and the authorities found him -- and found out that he could
talk -- they would've undoubtedly discovered just how much animosity
he had towards them. They would've kept him locked in a research
facility, just like the Roswellian aliens were in "INDEPENDENCE DAY".

Supposedly, Burton's film ended more like Boulle's novel did -- but I
would argue that Boulle's novel was more plausible, since he had set
his story so far into the future that modern-day dynamics didn't
apply. The malaise/ennui of Humanity that Boulle describes fits much
better into a scenario where 26th Century people have already created
their boring Utopia; our 20th/21st Century civilization, because of
all the turmoil in it, is hardly the boring setting that would lend
itself to the scenario that Boulle imagined, where a guy like Antelle
would revert to an animal.

Boulle's novel was profound, in its way. The 1968 film version was
(in my opinion) even MORE profound, by introducing the Nuclear War
element -- where Humanity doesn't just "lose" its civilization, they
DESTROY it.

But Burton's film, ultimately, doesn't have anything all that
profound to say about Human nature. On the contrary, one thing it
SEEMS to be suggesting goes against the very Theme that made the POTA
saga especially relevant: Leo combats Thade's army by utilizing
a "weapon of mass destruction" -- the huge explosion of the wrecked
ship's nuclear fuel, etc. In the 1968 POTA (and its sequels), the
danger of letting loose the "nuclear genie" is depicted, showing the
ruins of the civilization (ours) which let it loose. But in Burton's
film, that explosion is shown as part of the ANSWER to the threat
posed by Thade's hordes. BLOW 'EM UP!

Or... maybe that IS the "message", the "profound" thing, that
Burton's film was trying to say: that USING a WMD is ACCEPTABLE, as
long as it is used in a "limited" fashion. That would echo some of
the thinking of SOME military strategists in the post-Hiroshima
world.

But it AIN'T an acceptable notion, as far as the "classic" POTA saga
is concerned. Deep down, despite all the other things I didn't like
about Burton's film, this thematic disparity is probably the biggest
reason I think POTA2K was NOT a good addition to POTA-dom. So, if
they don't ever make ANY sequel to Burton's film, that would be just
fine with me. Burton's film is as much a part of the "true" POTA saga
as the film "Casino Royale" is to the BOND franchise.

Disaster is such a harsh word.  I prefer calamity.  It suggests that it might have been really good but went horribly awry.  And it's so much more euphemistic than clusterfuck.

I do agree with virtually ALL of you, that the original POTA's are
stronger films, but if you look at it on it's own without comparison,
Burton's film is great. It's too bad Burton won't be back for a
sequel. I wonder why he's not fond of BATMAN RETURNS. That was a
good movie. The franchise got worse only after Burton left.

"Batman Returns" is the same situation; it was too "out there" and people
didn't like it. It was the biggest hit of it's year but the studio felt it
didn't do as well as it should have or could have if people liked it.
According to Burton, they didn't want him to do "Batman 3". I liked "Batman
Returns" better than the first one, and much better than 3 and 4. "Batman 3"
did better, and "Batman 4" did worse than "Batman Returns". The first
"Batman" was by far the most successful. I think Burton likes "Batman
Returns" but doesn't like it's reception. Probably there's too much
expectations on sequels for Burton's taste. Their reason to exist is to make
a lot of money and Burton doesn't do well under a lot of financial pressure.
His best movies have smaller budgets. - - - Jeff

I caught the Christmas episode of a sitcom called "The Tracy Morgan Show". The plot was that Tracy's young accidentally (wait for it) destroyed Tracy's POTA DVD box set. Tracy finds out but not from the boy, who won't cop to it. Tracy tries to bribe a department store Santa into explaining to the boy the importance of telling the truth but Tracy and Santa wind up in a brawl and hilarity ensues. Anyway, it turns out the boy has been saving up his allowance to buy Tracy a new POTA box set and didn't want to apologize for destroying the old one until Christmas when he could give him the new one. Tracy unwraps the POTA box set in the heartwarming finale (sniff!). This show is between two of the hottest on TV, "Friends" and "Will and Grace", so 2/3rds of the nation saw Tracy receive a POTA box set for Christmas. It was a shared experience. Will this spark a frenzy of people giving POTA DVDs this Christmas? Did Fox exec see it and say, "Hmm. POTA box sets. Maybe we should put out a new one". (the show wasn't on Fox) Only time will tell. - - - Jeff

HI, I'm new here. Searching for original screen-used Planet of the
Apes costumes, props, set pieces, etc. I would love to discuss this
hobby with fellow Planet of the Apes enthusiasts. Is there any "show
and tell" here? FYI: There are some great reference images of
authentic POA memorabilia including a huge selection of set pieces
currently available for free at profilesinhistory.com (click on their
Hollywood link). They are supposed to remove these images after
their big auction this Friday, Dec. 12th so you need to download them
as soon as you can. They make for great screensavers too!!

Thought you guys would like to know. Enjoy, looking forward to
chatting with you. God bless the great Ape... Jake.

Thank you LordTZero, I will visit the other MB. FYI: I did receive
some private emails from Ape collectors regarding the upcomign
profilesinhistory.com Apes auction. I am sharing my opinion where
ever possible due to my experience bidding at their previous
auctions. Collectors should never be intimidated by previous record
prices being set or the low and high estimated values listed with
each lot. These do not indicate what the actual reserve price is on
a specific item at the upcoming auction. I have seen great pieces
slip through the cracks because collectors were not present to take
advantage of a fair and affordable price. Even if you are not
bidding, it should be a lot of fun to watch. And I have found that
auctions are often very exciting to participate in. Even if you do
not win... But you never know, you might get a deal! And there is
more than enough Ape artifacts to go around for everyone. Hope to
see you there. Best, Hunt leader Jake

I don't have the funds, especially around Christmas, but it might be fun to watch.  Then if I spot an item of interest at least I'll know who got it.  Sling me a link!

authentic POA memorabilia including a huge selection of set pieces
currently available for free at profilesinhistory.com (click on their

*** Hi, Jake, and welcome to our POTA group!

I checked out www.profilesinhistory.com (as you suggested), and they
indeed are auctioning off some original POTA stuff. As I recall, they
were an original Zaius costume (presumably from the movies -- did
Booth Colman wear the same one?), and Milo's "Ape-onaut" suit. Alas,
the prices they were listed at -- which, I assume, are "opening bid"
prices, since this IS an auction, right? -- were in the 5-figure
range, the tens-of-thousands-of-dollars range. Ouch! Maybe if I win
the Powerball lottery, I'll pony up the cash for 'em!

Or, maybe I'll just shell out a couple bucks for a stinking
loincloth... after all, what did I expect? An ape's new suit?

Subject: Queer Eye for the Ape Guy (the winnah!)
.html
.html
We have a winnah! Greg Harris has won the "Keep Brent Straight" contest. I'd like to thank everyone who sent in the thousands of entries, but Greg was the only one who found some concrete evidence. In an early draft of the "Beneath" script, Brent decides everything he's seeing on this crazy planet is an illusion, including Nova, "which is too bad". That dialogue didn't make it into the movie though, so "it's conjecture, not proof". But close enough. Someone's gotta win. Come to think of it, we're ALL winners, aren't we? Because now this silly topic can end.
For the newbies, the question was: How can Brent have Nova all to himself for most of "Beneath" and not show any interest. The most popular comeback was that he was too busy trying to avoid being shot. But he spends a night in a cage with her, he sleeps next to her in the city, but obviously they don't become more attached. Then there's the stuff about the mutants forcing him to kiss her. It's common knowledge that writer Paul Dehn was gay. And it's obvious he liked social commentary in his writing. Could this be a little comment on how gays are forced to conform in society? Maybe a way to add some weight to Brent's bland character (Fransiscus was in on the writing, too). Obviously it's open to interpretation, but for those who want to make Brent a little more interesting I don't see any conflicting facts.
Anyway, Greg had a choice of Kubrick sets and chose the "Ursus and his horse" one. He's released a statement and I'd like to share it with you:

I'm very excited and happy to win this contest. I know I will have hours of fun with my new Kubricks. And when I get thirsty, I'll be sure to reach for a delicious, refreshing Coca-Cola. Let's face it, Coke is the real thing. But Man does not live by soda alone, so maybe I'll down to my neighborhood McDonald's. Remember, McDonald's is your second home. "McDonald's: dinner's ready". After that, maybe I'll kick back, enjoy my Kubricks and have a Budweiser . After all, it's the "King of Beers". Thanks everyone for this terrific honor!"  Sincerely, Greg

I'd just like thank our sponsors for providing the wonderful prize (with a little left over so I could get a new car). This has been fun! See you at the next contest. - - - Jeff

Subject: makeup legend John Chambers (2/28/98)
.html
.html
JEFF: Perhaps the actor that's most associated with the "Apes" makeup is Roddy McDowell.
   JOHN: Yes he is.
JEFF: What would you say he brought to the makeup that was so special?
JOHN: Well Roddy, like most everyone on that thing, the original, they're fine actors. And they haven't any super ego. To subvert your own features, and you're an actor, you've got to be controlling your ego all the time. But he was proud to do it. And he animated, he learned how. He sat looking at himself in a mirror, which I advised him to do when he started. That was simple sculpture, the appliance was simple. To get the face animation through, kinda, and keep the mouth back as far as we could keep it, so they could sound their words. You'd see a lot of gorillas going around grunting and "rrr"ing. Let 'em talk, trying to get them to talk. But that's the caliber of Roddy McDowall.
JEFF: You did a cameo appearance in John Landis' movie "Schlock!"
   JOHN: Yeah.
JEFF: Is that the only cameo appearance you've done in movies?
JOHN: Yeah. (laughs) I didn't aspire to be an actor.
JEFF: What was the background behind that?
JOHN: Well, the inception of it was John (Landis, comedy director and former actor in "Battle For the POTA"). I mean, all that was derived from doing that film. John was a mail boy at Fox, and he was about 17 years old I think, in the days of the long hair. He had this long hair and he was a mail boy. And wherever he went he learned something in the studio. He was a sharp young man. And he heard we were setting up the labratory and started doing the whole process. He'd come in and he asked me, "Can I come in here and watch some of the people? I won't talk, I won't bother them". And I told John, "You're so interested, you're welcome any time you wanna come; and if you wanna talk you can talk". I had a good rapport with John, but he was a smart young guy, which we know now.
So, he wrote a script; he didn't have any money but he collected about $100,000 from people. I think it's about that; my memory might get jaded here. But it was the equivalency he could use to make a professional film. John made a professional film, "Schlock!". Schlock was the name he gave a monster in there, a guy in a gorilla suit. Well, the inception of a fine gorilla suit was on John, made for John, and it was a famous makeup artist now, he's got 4 Oscars. Rick Baker. And Rick...he was in (the film) with me in a little unit of National Guardsmen. And I'll bet I was a little fatter than I am now. So they only could get me a belt I could fling over my shoulder, with that pistol. Like, you know, I was in uniform. And we had dialogue, I was in the National Guard. And we were going to kill Schlock because he was up on a high school building or something. And he kills couples that are loving on the grass and stuff like that. So they're out to kill him!
Oh, and Schlock had banana peels wherever he was. So that's what John asked me, he says, "I'm shooting out west of L.A., at night. Would you help me do this scene? I'd like to have you play the captain". But my dialogue...I had to say to some of the young guys, Rick Baker too, they were all in uniform. I said, "Jeez, I know you, I know you". They say, 'How do you know me?' I'm the captain, see, and I say, "During the week I'm a barber and I cut your hair (to another) and I cut your hair..." And that was the first time and the last time I did anything like that. But it was funny. John Landis. That's a multi, multi-millionaire now. He was just 17 years old, the long hair, and hippie type.
JEFF: He had a cameo in "Battle For the POTA".
JOHN: Oh, did he? Yeah, oh, alright.
JEFF: I think that was after "Schlock!"
  JOHN: Yeah. Yeah.
(At the time of the interview I hadn't seen "Schlock!". Now it's available on VHS and DVD. Nice to add for "Ape" collectors; John's scene (including a "King Kong" moment); Rick Baker (of POTA2001) doing a cameo too, and did the makeup for the ape title character, his first screen ape; there's also an actual POTA mask Chambers loaned them that comes into play)
JEFF: You got credit on all the "Ape" movies for makeup design, but how much responsibility did you have on a day to day basis?
JOHN: Well, I never worried about credit. But I was responsible for the first 3, to make molds, new molds, etc. And the rest of them, I'd come down to the set, I was off the lot...I saw the films as they progressed.
JEFF: I talked to James Cameron personally. He's doing the new POTA movie that Fox is producing. And Stan Winston is doing the makeup FX. (such was the lineup at the time)
  JOHN: He's good.
JEFF: Stan Winston was at Fox at the time of the "Apes" movies, right?
  JOHN: No.
  JEFF: He wasn't?
JOHN: No. No, he wasn't. I don't know what he was doing.
JEFF: 'Cause they did a 3 minute promotional film for the first movie. (In the short "featurette" made in '68, there's a shot of someone taking stuff out of an oven who looks like Stan Winston. Rumor had it that it was but that's since been falsified. But it was an interesting factoid at the time Winston was going to do the new POTA)
  JOHN: Yeah?
JEFF: And they show him putting a mold in the oven.
  JOHN: No, that wasn't him.
JEFF: I know for a fact he worked on "Battle For the POTA" (Winston confirmed this)
JOHN: Oh, he did? After I was there? Yeah? All I know is the first 3. I'd be happy if he was on it.
JEFF: Have you seen any of his work recently? Stan Winston?
JOHN: I don't go to movies. (laughs)
  JEFF: You don't rent them?
JOHN: No. I watch 'em when they come on television. You know, it's like the mailman going for a walk on the weekends. I've seen so many of them; it'd have to be a very fine thing that I'd have to go see it.
JEFF: What would you say is your favorite achievement in your career? Not necessarily "Apes"; whatever you're most proud of.
JOHN: No, I'm very happy about my life in motion pictures, and the awards I've gleaned from them. They were so important. Just being awarded an Oscar alone (for "Apes"). I got an Emmy, Oscar, I got a lot of those things. It satisfied my ego. But one thing I took more gratification from was working for my country.
  JEFF: In (WWII)?
JOHN: No. Through my career as a makeup artist. What does a makeup artist do? Apply makeup. Why? Character makeup, like the apes and that. I worked for the CIA for quite a few years. (This has since been made public in a documentary and a book after John's death)
  JEFF: Oh, you did?
JOHN: Sure. And they decorated me with a thing in my own esteemed of thinking me as an Irish American. I say my folks came from peasantry in Ireland. My folks and my great, great uncle. My father and my mother came over from Ireland. So THIS is my country. And i was so proud to get this medal from the CIA. The Medal of Merit.
JEFF: What was it like filming the makeup test with Edward G. Robinson?
JOHN: I didn't work on that. They had shot, there was a makeup artist named Dick Smith (not to be confused with THE Dick Smith) who worked over there, that was the lab man. And his experience wasn't big enough and he couldn't get a good thing going, you know? But it proved one thing: they had to do it better. (This is covered in "Behind the POTA"; Ben Nye is credited with the makeup test)
JEFF: Did you see any of the POTA TV series?
JOHN: Yeah. (laughs) They didn't last long.
JEFF: What did you think of the schedule they were on, trying to do that for a weekly series?
JOHN: I had seen one, and then I saw another one. I got embarrassed. Because it was too loose. The directors didn't have taste. The actors, there was one guy that was lisping when he talked. And it so degraded the humans, they were wimps compared to characters that played those parts (in the movies). But I heard it was 13 features that they had, or one -hour shows.
JEFF: The equivalent of 13 features. (Actually, 14 eps, or 7 features)
JOHN: Yeah. Cut 'em down to hour things for television and show'd 'em. They never did it again. That's all I thought of that. Stan Winston is in digital stuff, very computerized. He's a fine artist. I hope he'll do alright. But even if he's the greatest, the actors have to be talented and liked, the sets, everything, director, everyone has to do it right. So it's kind of a long shot.
JEFF: What did you think (of the '97 birthday tribute for Chambers)?
JOHN: Well, you know. That's a long time ago. And when do you find a technician getting that verification? That's all I say, I appreciate it. I'm a dinosaur, before your generation. And I had my time when I was young.
JEFF: Do you realize the impact you've had on the industry?
JOHN: Yeah. Getting old and going through this, I've seen a lot of kids. I've helped influence a lot of kids.
JEFF: Yeah, that's one of the things that came out, the 'ol garage.
JOHN: Yeah. I'm not pretentious, I'll tell you. I can't help that. I'm proud of it, actually. I had people come to my home in Burbank, which I bought when I first came here. And I made a lot of money but I stayed in Burbank. I could've moved to Beverly Hills, I could've done what money buys. But that house was lucky for me, so I built an extension on the garage for a labratory. And they'd come up in Rolls Royces (they were my backers). And the neighbors said, "Where the hell are all those guys coming from?" That was it. I worked there 30 years because I loved the neighborhood and the house, right in the middle of Burbank.
JEFF: Did you realize at the time how successful the people you were training would be?
JOHN: Well, I have a knack for reading character. You know, I can see, maybe you have it too, this kind of spark. You can't define it that easily. But I can see it. It's a vibe. I usually found, I'd say to myself, both pro and con, I'd say, "Did I like him or didn't I like him?" And there were very few where I didn't like 'em. But when a guy was something I couldn't understand, I'd just lay low on it and watch him.
JEFF: Yeah, 'cause you helped a lot of (makeup artists). That's the main (theme) from the tribute.
JOHN: Yeah. All that they've done, I've helped guide 'em and give 'em a push but they did it all themselves with their talent.
JEFF: What about when you started out, helping veterans?
JOHN: Prosthetics? Yeah, it was an anguished deal. Everyone I worked on died. By the time I resurrected them with the prosthetics, the cancer or double pneumonia killed them all. That was real life. So I went to make believe.
JEFF: Last year there was a big controversy about BIgfoot.
  JOHN: Oh yeah?
JEFF: Landis said that you created that, the famous images.
JOHN: No. Someone must have told him this story, but I didn't do it.
SCOTT ESSMAN: The rumor is, Tommy Burman's in the suit.
JOHN: Yeah, yeah. (laughs) Oh yeah, that's the rumor.
JEFF: You've been a big inspiration for other makeup artists. What were your inspirations?
JOHN: Well, I've been an artist all my life, I've been a commercial artist. I'm a graduate commercial artist. And it was a nice career, but I went out for publishing and printing, and for agencies. And it was a dog eat dog business that was always PRESSURE. I mean terrible pressure. Not like the pressure we get in (the film) industry. And I thought, 'Why do I go to a job like that and get 12 ulcers?" So I thought I'd go to Hollywood.
JEFF: Any memories of winning the Oscar?
JOHN: Well, it was an honorary Oscar, so I knew about it before it was awarded. And then they said you've got to come in for a rehearsal with the rest of the group. And they had a chimp, was dressed in a tuxedo, on roller skates. And he brought the Oscar out. And Walter Mattheu was the announcer. And I told them, "Look, this is a great honor for a guy that we have no classification for".
JEFF: It was the second (makeup Oscar) in history.
JOHN: Yeah. And I said I don't want to be upset with a monkey if it's running around the stage with my Oscar. So Roger what's-his-name, he was a famous director, he says, "Well, just think. Years from now, you ask people if they saw you with that Oscar", they won't know it's me with the Oscar. But if you tell 'em the one where the chimpanzee gave the Oscar out, they'll remember. And it was so. people have referred to it all through the years. They never forget the chimpanzee.

Subject: "Human language: All in the genes?" -- from Monday's USA Today
.html
The USA TODAY paper had this little gem in it yesterday:

------------------------------------------------------
"Human language: All in the genes?"

A comparison of the genetic maps of people and chimpanzees supports
the idea that language is a key factor that makes us human, according
to a team of researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and
Celera Genomics. In Friday's issue of the journal SCIENCE, the
researchers noted differences in genes believed to be involved in the
development of speech and hearing. "We speculate that understanding
spoken language may have required tuning of hearing acuity," they
wrote. The team also found differences in genes involved in the sense
of smell. Scientists think chimps and humans diverged from a common
ancestor 5 million years ago. Humans and chimps share more than 99%
of their genes, and scientists are eager to find out how tiny
differences can be so important.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm... "more than 99% of their genes" are shared between humans and
chimps? Elsewhere, I've read that it's something like 98.3% that's
shared, but maybe that figure refers to human-and-gorilla DNA, or
chimp-and-gorilla DNA instead...?

The Human Genome Project has already mapped out our species' genome,
but I wonder if the same has been done for the great apes?

Yeah, I've seen that number as low as between 95 - 97.  I wish someone would map it so they could say definitively, but it too them ten years to do a mouse or a paramecium or something.

Correct, Dan.

Like I said, it didn't bother me but others didn't like it.

But certain people on this group don't listen to feedback unless it
suits what they want....they kinda "moderate" out anything they don't
wanna hear....like an ostrich, burying their heads in the sand....

That's precisely why this group has become a barren wasteland, filled
with off-topic posts and bickering.

The offenders know the effect of their actions but they won't adapt
to allow others THEIR rights - then they hide behind talk about how
free THIS group is. But they don't get it - freedom is not about
ignoring everyone else to the point where they leave the group, it is
about assimilating feedback and making a place where everyone can BE
free, not oppressed and insulted but free to say what makes them
uncomfortable.

What Jeff did had the same effect as if he had fired a machine gun
into a crowd. Now, instead of realising he has hurt people (albeit
unintentionally I am sure), he wants to drag it on in this group.
Instead of realising the machine gun had to go, he wants to talk
about his RIGHTS to fire a machine gun into a crowd because he is
FREE. I expected more from him.

Subject: Terry Hoknes - What's the Story???
.html
This entry made me wonder, but I chose to exercise my freedom to
avoid further embarrassing a certain person.

However, since Jeff has said recently that Ape Chronicles may be
returning to print, and since this is the THIRD person to accuse
Jeff's partner in the venture, Terry Hoknes, of being a crook, I
think it would be wise to ask for Jeff's input here.

Jeff, are you aware that people are sending money to Terry and he is
telling them they can't get what they want and that he refuses to
return their money?

What is your opinion of this?

Does this make you want to disassociate yourself from Terry?

If Ape Chronicles does return, do you think people will be confident
to send in money after this?

Is this just Terry's way of saying "I'm free! Free to rip people
off! God bless America!"? ;)

Michael

Time to address a very serious issue.

I have been contacted by persons who are distressed by their handing over
money to "The International Planet of the Apes Fan Club" and receiving
NOTHING in return. Apparently they are also told that their money will NOT
be returned to them.

As you can imagine, as founder of the OFFICIAL International Planet of the
Apes Fan Club (free membership), this is an issue that deeply concerns me.

So:

(1) Could we please hear from those who have been effected?

(2) Could somebody please contact Terry and tell him to get his offer to
join the Fan Club OFF the net before more people hand over their cash for
nothing (if you got to the site http://www.hoknes.com/apes.htm it claims:
"If you enjoyed this website then you will love the additional info
available only in our fanzine.
INFORMATION ON ALL ASPECTS OF THE SERIES 1963-2003" - this is obviously
misleading).
(3) Jeff, are you aware this is happening? Can you justify it? What is
your opinion on this?
