A lot of people would have joined but opted for no email, just to
join the group. If they gave up and stopped visiting the site to
read/post, why bother to leave the group?

A lot of spammers and scammers join groups like this too. They can
then email you with your name attached to the spam.

Then there's people like Dave Ballard who hasn't posted for ages and
then chimes in with an interesting post, not mentioning me, and gets
one reply. Then there's people like Dan who contibute files and ask
the group to comment, but the group chooses to talk about...you
guessed it....

I'd say they were out there and they even chime in every so often,
maybe even try to say something interesting....but what is the point
of that?

Michael

other than some other who were referencing him, I was more or less

But I truly believe that he thinks he's doing what's best for POTA
Groups in general. Though a lot of the time it's just what's best
for him. But I'd like to see this group discuss all the subjects
you can't cover on DG. Politics, religious and social issues, the
incestuous nature on the ANSA mission, Brent's possible gayness,
Zira obsession with Taylor's sex life, the whole nine yards. This
group should be everything you always wanted to know about POTA but
were afraid to ask, at least on DG. Maybe the other group should be
called POTA-Lite.

Red Rooster did a Lion King 2 cup set. I think they spell it "Zera"

Okay, here's a question: What is the breed of dog that chases Farrow
up that tree in the opening bit of the TV show's pilot
episode, "ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW"? It ain't a chihuahua. It ain't a
basset hound. It ain't a doberman pinscher. What breed IS it? Does
anybody have a clue?

While we're at it, what's the breed of that yappin' mutt that appears
briefly in that other episode (I think it was "THE LEGACY", but it
might've been another one... as I recall, it was right before the
Fugitives entered one of the ruined Bay Area cities)?

For those of you who think that I think that I'm some kinda know-it-
all, rest assured I do NOT. I don't know what breeds these two dogs
belong to (or even if they are pure-bred), but I would LIKE to know.
I have a basset hound at home, and I can recognize a good number of
breeds, but I don't know enough about the subject to identify the two
dogs from those episodes. If anybody DOES know, please chime in.

Not gonna happen.  You don't 'Rule The Planet' over here.
The reason I was 86ed from DG was I wouldn't knuckle

happen.  And I hadn't introduced any new jabs or jibes.
You've only commented on me commenting on someone

Does anyone here have any information on the weapons of the Apes? I
know the rifle used in the first movie was an M-1 carbine but I'm
not sure about the pistol and the machine gun from Beneath. I would
imagine they used the same rifle "guts" for the rifles in Beneath
although the stocks were made of aluminum instead of wood. Does
anyone have any answers???

P.S. I am fairly sure that the guts and magazine of the Beneath
machine gun were Thompson .45 cal machine guns.

I used to think that the machine guns were either M-76s or Swedish Ks or some other sub-gun based off the M-3 or Grease Gun, but they're not.  They are an M-3 type but they're I think they're boxier rather than roundish.  Brian over at Apemania said what they did use, but I can't remember off the top of my head.  It was something I hadn't heard of before.  Does anyone remember?  I think it's the same ones from Battle, but I'm not positive.

It was in that and I also have this book called "Retakes: Behind the Scenes of 500 Classic Movies" by John Eastman that states that was what the 20th Century-Fox prop department called it.  "Prop Designers created a special rifle (the Rea Voom 88) to accommodate an ape's paw."

From Brian at Apemania.

Sure thang Mikey,
yes, Ape rifles housed .30 cal M-1 Carbines, some with rear sites,
some without
Ape pistols housed revolvers, possibly .38 cal
Sorry Greg #2, the Ape Sub-Machine guns housed Danish Madsen sub-
machine guns, not Thompson, or Greaseguns. (Supplied by Stembridge
Arms to the studios.) You can see these weapons in non-ape form in
a few old sixties tv shows, MI, TMFU etc., even on Star Trek. In
the James Bond film "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER" you'll see them used by
the bad guys all over the oil drilling rig during the finale'. (see
attached for example)
Because the wood stocks designed and used in the first film were so
thin around the receivers, the wood often split or cracked when the
weapon's slide recoiled. Urethanes were still "space age"
technology at the time and were slowly making a limited way into the
film industry. The studios still used their in-house wood and metal
departments for many props of this nature, so the decision to go to
metal was an obvious one for the sequel.
I hope this info helps.

    Subject: Goldsmith's Daddy is dead.
    .html
    .html.htmlFrom today's (1/9/04) issue of www.filmscoremonthy.com:

Morris K. Goldsmith, father of Jerry Goldsmith and grandfather of Joel Goldsmith, died in his Los Angeles home on December 14th, 2003, of natural causes, at the age of 101. He worked as an aeronautical engineer during World War II and as a structural engineer after the war, on such projects as the Hollywood Bowl. Upon his retirement, Goldsmith was appointed by L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley to the city's Building Commission. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jewish Home for the Aging.

And I posted about this before, but this one's funny:

Writer John Gregory Dunne died in his New York apartment on December 30th, 2003. Dunne's novels included True Confessions, and he collaborated with his wife Joan Didion on the screenplay for that film. He also wrote a non-fiction book, Monster, about the many years he and Didion spent developing the screenplay that became Up Close & Personal. For film music fans, his most notable work may be The Studio, his 1968 non-fiction book about 20th Century Fox, which features a memorable section on the scoring sessions for Doctor Dolittle. Lionel Newman is depicted addressing producer Arthur P. Jacobs as "lardass" and bemoaning how "Talk to the Animals" (which went on to win the Best Song Oscar) is "such a lousy song."

No, that's a new one.  I've never seen it before and may have to order it.  It's a little shorter than the one I bought from them before, which has a Lake Powell base, but it's less than half the price.

Tim Burton's "Big Fish" was estimated to be the top movie this weekend, bringing in $14.5 million compared to "Return of the King"'s $14.1 million (a photo finish). He's still part of "the family" (maybe the black sheep) so I thought this might be of interest to some. - - - Jeff

*** If you click on the pic in the MonstersInMotion link, it shows
the model's separate pieces before you put 'em together and
paint 'em. The interior details (unlike their earlier "Full Interior"
model) seem much more accurate: they have individual hibernation
    bunks that are separate pieces.
So this is indeed a "new version" of the Icarus. Damn! I'm gonna have
to order one, and at almost $50 bucks (after S/H) it's more than a
    pretty penny!

Peter Staddon of Fox chatted at www.hometheaterforum.com last night and POTA was brought up. Here's what was said:

David Belder: Hi Peter. I would like to know if you are planning to do anamorphic transfers for the POTA sequels, and will "Battle for the POTA" feature the extended cut?

Peter Staddon: I would like to get all our non-anamorphic releases reissued in anamorphic discs, but the business man in me needs to be able to justify the expense. So I guess we'll see how the POTA reissue sells before determining if we will reissue all the other films in the series. I'd have to check on the condidtion of any print of the extended cut, but it would be cool to include it.

Your $20 won't make much differenc, T. This is aimed at the people who just want the original and probably don't have the documentary, so the extras are new to them. The documentary might get them interested in the sequels, which hopefully Fox will provide down the line. - - - Jeff

I was looking at the responses to this, but not one of them hit on the most obvious answer.  There are other reasons.  The most obvious. Nova is HOT!  You don't have to be human to admire the physical symmetry of that body.  That's just the way it is.  They did a study on faces and the ones that were considered the most attractive my the majority were the most symmetrical.  And health is a consideration.  And you can tell by looking at her she's in good baby bearing shape.  And judging by the other females the best of the lot.  But the most obvious reason is the transfusion.  Most of you are too young to remember, but a blood test used to be a prerequisite to getting a marriage license.  Since Zira knew they were a blood type match, she knew there were no problems in mating that pair.

I don't know if I deserve to moderate this list anymore, and

It's not mine any longer. This list, and the decision, is yours. I am

A lot's happened since you went away.  There's been a war.  It's been a strange war.  A war of Freedom vs Moderation.  It all started with some flame wars.  Mostly between Mike and Rory.  But they spread, and most of the major players were involved at one time or another.  It's all in the archives.  Anyway, to make a long story short Mike and James split off and formed POTA DG, under the guise of providing moderation from the flame wars.  But over at DG any controversial topic would be toned downor edited out completely.  But it wasn't just that.  Mike used it publically insult other members and would delelte any retaliation, and ban the opposition that voiced their opinion over here instead.  Some of the hardcore fans are still members of both groups.  But most of the POTA discussion is done on POTA DG.  And most of the discussion about the abuse of moderator power over on DG is done here on POTA.  I know, it seems backwards.  But POTA is the only place where a post about the injustices over at DG can get through.  Many of them didn't believe it, until it was turned on them.  They left DG, but most of them either remain, ignorant of it, or don't care.   I know you didn't think about this happening.  Maybe you can go on DG and bring them back here where they belong.  But don't be surprised if your post doesn't get through.  James and Mike aren't likely to let anything through that would challenge their power.  James is the worst of the orangutans and Mike is just a gorilla.  We chimps are too few.

There are 12 animals that represent Chinese years (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar). Thus, there is a Year of the Monkey every 12 years. Previous Monkey Years have included 1968 (the year the original POTA premiered), 1980, 1992 (the first year of "Ape Chronicles") and now 2004. We're starting with a new DVD edition of the original flick. Will the Year of the Monkey mark a new beginning for POTA fans?  - - - Jeff

    .html
Hey all, this is David (AKA Caesar the list mod if you missed my
last mail) here. I wanted to thank you for the warm welcome I've
received and the encouragement in bringing this list back to it's
former glory. My hope is that in this, coming Year of the Ape, we can
make this list better then it has ever been, and end the flame wars
    once and for all.

Tonight I am going to begin work on a new code of conduct for the
list. I encourage any and all of you to e-mail me with any concerns,
suggestions, or questions you have not just now for anytime in the
future regarding this list. In the mean time, I'm asking for a new
beginning. I know it's a lot to ask, perhaps too much, but if we can
do this I think we have a chance of making this list what I had hoped
for when I created it back in 1998: A peaceful retreat from the
stress of everyday life where we can all get together and discuss a
common love of Planet of the Apes. I know it won't be easy, but I
think in time we will be able to put aside our differences, and take
this list to a new level together.

    Thank you again,

    -David

Yeah, my email came back, but anyway . . .

My only concern is that we might lose the only place where POTA can be discussed freely.  When POTA was release it was a fairly controversial film with a lot of controversial topics.  Many of those topics are taboo on POTA DG.  I hope that POTA will remain a place where those topics can be discussed openly.  Over on DG they'll slap a muzzle on you faster than Taylor in the court room scene.

What I'm striving for is a PG-13 level moderation here. I don't want to discuss anything too controversal(X-Rated, racist, things that are just in bad taste), but I do want this to be a list where members can discuss any POTA related topics they wish. I think what I may do is have a separate list for those topics which are hugely controversial, and offensive so that in the rare event that a topic which is relevant and interesting, but inappropriate for kids and offensive comes up, we can allow those who wish to participate in said discussion to do so, while not offending those who do not want to explore the more adult or extremely offensive elements of POTA.

I am hoping that the comment was meant in spirit of fun (making a POTA joke) rather then in an offensive manner. I do want to make it clear though that outright insults or abuse of jokes will not be tolerated, not that I am in anyway suggesting anyone would do so. Dave,
How bout when a post concerning a "controversial" topic is brought
up, a message is sent to the group directing them to where that
topic would be posted, so everyone has an opportunity and can make
the decision for themselves to read that post or not.

Sounds great, David. This group has a long history and many good memories.
With the original POTA movie coming out remastered in 2 weeks and the
Chinese Year of the Monkey starting in 3 days, it's a good time to put the
flame wars, the Tim Burton era and the other woes behind us and "begin
again", as Roddy's Caesar said. Hopefully Fox will join us, pick up the
ball and do it right this time. - - - Jeff

I don't think anything political, racial, religious, should be taboo as long as it's talked about respectfully and with good taste (which would be up to the moderator to decide). There will always be those who will be offended. Some might be offended if the talk turns to evolution, for example. But there's no point in this being a duplicate of the DG. Certainly the makers of POTA didn't tip toe around political correctness. There was a battle to allow Taylor to say potentially offensive lines in the last scene, too. - - - Jeff

Some might be offended if talk turns to boomerangs too Jeff; I am amazed on a daily basis at what offends people (including your "Is Brent Gay" thread - until people became offensive about it!).  And to have some basic rules is not a duplicate of the DG, just good sense - because certain individuals believe the only people with rights are themselves and everyone else should suffer because they want to liberally express themselves.  Well, flashers like to liberally express themselves too, but when they open their raincoat to my children there are consequences.

And stop trying to compare everything to POTA.  It was a movie.  With movies, you make decisions, get a rating based on the decisions you make and get an audience based on that.  This group has a "walk-in" audience and most of them have standards.  If you want to make a profound, adult point, go make a movie!  Make a POTA "re-imagination" and have all these topics in it.  Hook up with T and write a Porno script - hell, feature a half-ape kid in it (like the one that was CUT from beneath).  This is a chat group, and if you guys want it to work you will have to make some sacrifices....."sorry, guys"!
Oh, and what happened to the original cut of Conquest?

I'm not saying we should cut out our tongues, just that we need to go out of our way NOT to offend people on the group....if you want it to be a stress free place to discuss POTA.

- - - Jeff

Ok, I'm gonna step in here. This is getting out of hand. First off, none of us but Michael know how Michael feels for certain. He is telling us that he took offense to the "muzzle"  comment. I would still appreciate it if you apologized if the comment offended him but in all fairness, I can see where such a comment could have been made in the spirit of fun and I will give you the benefit of the doubt. What I am going to stop is the personal attacks. They have no place here. I don't care who they are directed at or who is behind them, their not going to fly. I want this to be a place where all fans can discuss POTA in a comfortable environment. While I will not censor your right to discuss more mature aspects of POTA, I will censor everyone who makes personal insults towards another member.  Any further arguing of this topic must be done OFFLIST. Whether it is via an e-mail to me privately, or to eachother, the list is no place for personal insults about anyone.

Any problems with this action should be directed to me via private e-mail.

I agree it should go to another list. My kids won't be checking
the "OFF" in a subject heading and I would seriously like them to be
    free to browse the group.

I'd be very cautious, David, of letting "majority" rule in a group
where at least one person has multile email identities (and boasts
    about it - this isn't a secret).

I think the decsion should be yours, but of course that decision is
yours! ;) And even if it goes to another site, I wonder if racist
remarks and ideals should be unwelcome there too, or will that be
the new toilet for insults aimed at me?

I'm making these contributions because I care about this site and it

I'd rather just have a subject header. I don't want to have to go to another list. Might as well join the other list in the first place. The squeamish already have the DG.
For example, "Big Fish" is Tim Burton's first movie since POTA. I think it's relevant if people see it and want to say what they thought. Some might find that off-topic, others might be interested. If it's labeled "Big Fish" (OT) those who aren't interested can just skip it. I don't think the moderator should decide whether it's relevant or not. A moderator is important as far as profanity and fighting goes. I think it would be better if members just say, "Hey, I'm offended" and why about certain posts, instead of the moderator throwing out, say, a post about how "Conquest" is based on the Watts Riots because someone "might" be offended. Basically I'm saying we have the DG, I think the topics should be looser here, as long as it's not flame wars and ugliness. - - - Jeff

But what about new members?  They don't want to see someone's commentary on the Catholic Church or argument supporting their favourite political party....it would likely scare them away.  And it wouldn't be a stress free haven to discuss POTA.  This is the main problem.  These discussions often get alot of posts and your new members will not hang around for that, whether it has an OT or not!

I'd rather this uglier stuff goes to a separate site that I won't join.  I don't really care about people's biases against religions and generalisations about political groups.  of course Religion and Politics were a huge part of POTA, that much of that huge part was a lesson that you should not generalise or categorise people because of their beliefs.  From the few characters we did meet, some of them did break the mould.  So to call someone a "Chimp" could mean they are peaceful, could mean they are vegetarian, could meant they started a revolution, could mean their son fell out of a tree and died.......generalising and labelling with such ignorance is something I can do without.

I'm looking forward to the Goldsmith commentary, and some of the other new stuff. As well as the remastered picture and sound. But I think there's enough for 1 disc, not 2. The saving grace is that it'll be on sale so it's like getting the second disc free.
      I think Rory's a good guy, but I don't understand why he's taking the Goldsmith comments so personally.  - - - Jeff

    Thanks Caesar.

Certainly I have the right to say I think Goldsmith's commentary is not worth much.  I hate commentaries!  I think Goldsmith is a genius as a composer, and I also think he'll stick to commentary on the music and not much else.

In context, what I said was that Fox gave us VERY little incentive to buy the "35th Anniversary" DVD.  There's alot of Planet of the Apes fans who agree.

By the way, I'm not going anywhere - I think this could be a great group with a moderator (seeing as you can't control YOURSELF!).

It's not supposed to be "ugly" stuff. It's the themes of POTA. If people go to far on a tangent it should be curtailed. If someone says the ritual in "Beneath" shows how silly religions are or a religion is, someone should be able to respond. That makes for an interesting discussion. If they then start to argue religion with no POTA connection the moderator can tell them to take it off-line. But it shouldn't be up to one person to decide for everyone if it's "offensive", or shuttle it off to another list where maybe someone would be interested but doesn't know about it because they didn't join the other list fearing racial slurs or something else. It should be common sense what's POTA related or not.
I'd like this group to build up too, but I'd also like a place to discuss things without having to tiptoe and worry about "scaring people off". Some people should be scared off. It's healthy. POTA is not "Davey and Goliath". It deals with things.
I understand worrying about kids. Profanity, no. Flame wars, no. But sometimes we don't give kids enough credit. We liked POTA when we were kids (some of us). It's a hard call. I will abide by whatever is decided.

Caesar, are you going to set about removing ugly posts from the archives that have nothing to do with POTA?  I know you see the Archives as a place where there is a record of posts, but if you were to remove the offensive ones I'd be happier with Jeff's idea - new members would not see the ugly stuff.

If you go to the Yahoo site and click on a message, above it next to

with a lot of computer giberish comes up. Scroll down and look for
    either "X-eGroups-Remote-IP" or "X-Originating-IP" a number like
this will be next to it (64.12.136.8) which is the Internet Provider
address. But these can be changed easily and even faked so it
    doesn't really mean much.

A lot of people feel that way, Evan.  But now that David's watching he seems to be minding his Ps & Qs, in an Eddy Haskel sort of way.  It may seem a bit smarmy, but I for one think it's a definite improvement over the way things used to be.  I think we all know who can't stand whom.  Let's just try and keep it civil.  We can probably manage that at least.

    So tell us Evan,

Who sacrificed a lot of time and effort to get you that horse tattoo?

The POTADG was not for you because you refused to let a topic about
POTA pornography go when you were asked by the moderators to stop
    posting about the topic.

Instead, you persisted and it was decided by the moderators that
your post would not go through. James and Helen can verify this.
So your personal attack, like everyone else's over here (while you
are obviously trying to score points with the new moderator) is
unwarranted and I suppose you will in due time be told not to attack
me further (but hey, I'm sure you can drum up more fake email
addresses to attack me and get warned).

My actions make perfect sense. You sent a post that continued a
topic we had asked people to stop commenting on, after having
complaints about it. This is PORNOGRAPHY we are talking about, so
it is not outrageous that the topic was not for everyone.

I asked you to re-write the post and you did, and I asked for the
moderators' input. It was unamimously agreed that the thread had
run its course. None of us have changed our mind.

I am not getting at all offensive, but if I do I'm sure I will be
treated just the same as everybody else on this group.

I find it offensive that you are trying to argue that I am denied
the right to be in this group, a group I have been in for many years
    longer than you have.

I am concerned for anyone who is a Planet of the Apes fan, and not
many of these have the same energy I have to fight the contemptuous
nonsense a small minority of you in this group (which happens to ba
arounf 90% of the contributors) want to dish out.

I'm not leaving this group, and I hope David (or Caesar) that you
develop a code of conduct about people making negative, unjust
accusations against me (and their next victim). Part of the real
problem is that this group is being treated as a garbage dump for a
few people's opinions about me. I can't see why this should be
    allowed to continue.

    Michael
