Rory was warned by the new moderator about this post, as you were
about your post.

I guess it means you get one more sucker punch and then you get the
same "muzzle" we use on the POTADG. At least David didn't just ban
you like Mez did. Now THAT'S what I cal SENDING A MESSAGE!

Funny you should say that T, because a lot more people feel the
OPPOSITE. As much as you want to paint me in a bad light, I get a
lot more praise than criticiam and it is backed up with FACTS about
why.

These are from the people who FLED this group because you refused to
conduct yourself appropriately, T.

And they don't seem to be around - I wonder why?

And your moderator has seen these compliments and experienced the
reasons why I received them - because while you have been here
wallowing in your own filth, dedicated fans have been doing positive
things.

Sorry Jeff but I disagree, I'm not squeamish but I thought this was
meant to be a POTA group. Burton did make a movie that
had 'something' to do with POTA but that doesn't mean we should
discuss what he has done since. Just as discussing Ted Post's other
movies wouldn't be relevant on this group. There are plenty of other
groups out ther for discussing other movies that should be used for
just that.

Caesar, are you going to set about removing ugly posts from the archives that have nothing to do with POTA?  I know you see the Archives as a place where there is a record of posts, but if you were to remove the offensive ones I'd be happier with Jeff's idea - new members would not see the ugly stuff.

Michael
I know for a fact I'm going to keep the archives. At least for now. Maybe this has more to do with personal reasons then group reasons, and if in the  future I realize it does, I'll reconsider, but I feel at least for now we all need to be reminded of the past. I feel that erasing the past would be almost like the smoke screen that Dr. Zaius & company had going in the first two films. If enough people want the archives cleaned up, perhaps I'll reconsider, but I think for now we should all be reminded.

Hello.  My name is Evan.  I wrote an introduction but I never saw it go to the list.  I like to recreate movie props, brew beer, cast metal, collect tattoos, and read.  I'm a big Rod Serling and Planet of the Apes fan.  I am in the process of getting an Ape rider on horseback tattooed on my arm.  I just got the outline.   I joined this list after I found out POTADG was not for me.  I for one hope that Michael Whitty has no say whatsoever when it comes to this list.  I find that his actions make no sense and he gets offensive and threatening when asked to explain himself.  He's getting offensive already and perhaps he's on the way to being threatening.  Michael Whitty has his own group and I for one hope that he have no control here.  Let him show his concern for his own group.

Evan

Hey, Evan. Welcome to the group.

I would ask you not to make any personal attacks at any of the group members here. I can promise you I'll protect your rights here, but I also will do that to others. Michael is being attacked by a lot of people here and I won't stand for it. His DG list is moderated the way he sees fit. I will moderate this list much differently, but I won't allow outright bashing of his list or himself here. I will not allow anyone to bash you either. Michael will have say on this list, but so will all the members. I want everyone to be able to address problems they have to me via private e-mail. I promise only that I will take what you say into consideration, but you al have say. That being said, lets move on to Planet of the Apes!

Is the tattoo your getting the silhouette from the TV show theme? I hope you'll send us all a picture when it is completed. I'd be interested in seeing your prop reproductions too. If you don't have a scanner perhaps you could mail me photos and I could scan them for you. I've been entertaining the idea lately of making a working replica of on of the rifles from POTA. My farther and I go target shooting often, and he does gunsmithing as a hobby, so the stock would be no problem. Have you ever attempted anything like that? If you have I'd appreciate any pointers you may have.

I hope this list is enjoyable for you, and I hope you can help me make sure it's enjoyable for everyone else. Let me know offlist if you need anything.

Sorry, Neil. I disagree. Discussing Ted posts or Tim Burton's or Paul
Giamatti's great acclaim in "American Splendor" IS appropriate if people are
interested. Just as those things are discussed in books about POTA (Eric
Greene talks at great length about "The War lord", starring Heston, directed
by Schaffner, and with Maurice Evans). And he also discusses Heston's films;
so does Russo. I said it before, I'll say it again: POTA is more to me than
just what's on e-bay or why the new DVD is/isn't disappointing. - - - Jeff

A lot of people praised Joe McCarthy at first too.
Anyway I. for one, am marking this post Off Topic.
You should do the same as long as your not going

So tell us Evan,

Who sacrificed a lot of time and effort to get you that horse tattoo?
The POTADG was not for you because you refused to let a topic about
POTA pornography go when you were asked by the moderators to stop
posting about the topic.

Instead, you persisted and it was decided by the moderators that
your post would not go through.  James and Helen can verify this.
So your personal attack, like everyone else's over here (while you
are obviously trying to score points with the new moderator) is
unwarranted and I suppose you will in due time be told not to attack
me further (but hey, I'm sure you can drum up more fake email
addresses to attack me and get warned).

My actions make perfect sense.  You sent a post that continued a
topic we had asked people to stop commenting on, after having
complaints about it.  This is PORNOGRAPHY we are talking about, so
it is not outrageous that the topic was not for everyone.

I asked you to re-write the post and you did, and I asked for the
moderators' input.  It was unamimously agreed that the thread had
run its course.  None of us have changed our mind.

I am not getting at all offensive, but if I do I'm sure I will be
treated just the same as everybody else on this group.

I find it offensive that you are trying to argue that I am denied
the right to be in this group, a group I have been in for many years
longer than you have.

I am concerned for anyone who is a Planet of the Apes fan, and not
many of these have the same energy I have to fight the contemptuous
nonsense a small minority of you in this group (which happens to ba
arounf 90% of the contributors) want to dish out.

I'm not leaving this group, and I hope David (or Caesar) that you
develop a code of conduct about people making negative, unjust
accusations against me (and their next victim).  Part of the real
problem is that this group is being treated as a garbage dump for a
few people's opinions about me.  I can't see why this should be
allowed to continue.

Michael

Michael,

Neil sacrificed his time and effort for my tattoo and he was paid for his time.  I wasn't going to list what the argument was about, but since you still don't get it, surely others will.  Michael, I'm sorry I came in late on the topic thread about adult films that were loosely based on POTA late and you asked to edit my post.  I edited out the remarks about adult movies when asked.  The message brought up two topics though.  The second topic was about film critic and movie host Joe Bob Briggs of TNT's Monstervision who had run Planet of the Apes and its sequels many times and who was an admitted fan and who had discussed POTA at length and when you asked me to edit the letter for content I removed any adult movie references, and changed the focus to movie host Joe Bob Briggs.  But you persisted in attacking me, ridiculously claiming that Joe Bob Briggs is porno.  I sent you links to the host segments of Joe Bob Briggs for the Planet of the Apes films, but you persisted in your insane idea that Joe Bob Briggs was porno and kept telling me that porno was not allowed.  I left your group because you're obviously mental.  I argued Joe Bob Briggs was not porno and asked you to explain yourself.  That is when you threatened to contact Yahoo on me.  I don't believe James and Helen can verify anything because I doubt you sent them my edited letter.  When I tried to submit the edited letter to James, my email was returned.  What is your obsession with where I live?  What does it matter?  I find your interest in this regard very scary.  What is your obsession with people with multiple identities?  I have never written to the list with any email but this one.  I think you're paranoid.  I don't care who the moderator here is.  I trust him to do a good job, but it's you I'm concerned about.  I'm not trying to say you should be banned from this group.  I'm just saying shut up and enjoy the ride.  Trust the moderator here to do his own job and stay out of his after all you've got you're own group and I want no part of you're insanity.

The one and only real Evan

Neil, this is certainly one of, if not THE, best illustrated POTA
comics I have seen.

Now, at the risk of alot of negativity from certain parties, what do
the rest of you think of the comic?

By the way, Part 5 will feature in Issue #8 of Simian Scrolls, the
UK POTA Fanzine.

Actually, your posts are the ones I am really concerned about. But
then my retalliations would look a bit one sided wouldn't they? ;)

No, I just can't imagine why anyone would want to live in a house
with crud all over the walls. And if you are going to ban foul
language, I think it would be consistent to clean it up in the
archives. But hey, there's only about 6 people here and they either
like playing in their own waste or they are used to it, so if you
want a group with 6 people in it, you're making all the right
decisions here.

I won a POTA Movies Box Set (about $100US worth at the time).

The competition said to explain in under 25 words why you deserve to win a prize.

I said something along the lines of "Because I love POTA so much I keep buying the rubbish you guys pump out, even the DVD of that awful Burton movie".  They must value honesty at Fox........

I'm so over the ending!  A few people made explanations (even Fox tried I think) but it all got very Back to the Future on Acid for me!  I decided not to care was the best approach!

I really enjoyed POTA2001 until the line "Get your fillthy paws".....then it just got worse.  Heston's cameo - disgraceful...absurd.

Weighing it up, I thought ofverall it was a disgraceful effort.

You're not alone in reading them, but generally I think many POTA Fans didn't really like them.

I bought them every month (as one does) but the stories and artwork were, IMHO, very pedestrian.

The exceptions were "Blood of the Apes" and "Urchak's Folly".  I likes the art and stories in them.

And for some reason I really liked the Annual.

The best thing about these comics was that they EXISTED...at a time when there was not much around!

Gary Challoner, Urchak author/artist, is an Aussie who posts at times on the POTADG.  He sold me the original colour cover for #2 and he threw in a cool page.  Anyone interested in purchasing a piece of ape history from Gary, let me know.

Anyone on this list read the Planet of the Apes comics Adventure Comics put out?  If not I strongly suggest you try and pick some up. (In fact, I think the comic store near me has some if anyone is looking.) the story line is great. I'd look forward to hearing from anyone who has read any of these. I really enjoyed POTA2001 until the line "Get your fillthy paws".....then it just got worse.  Heston's cameo - disgraceful...absurd.

what the recording industry uses to know who to sue for sharing songs

Just saw this on the Forbidden Zone website, the original film re-
imagined as a Twilight Zone episode. It's done in black & white and
edited down to a half-hour. Here's the link:
http://www.theforbidden-zone.com/video/tzone_pota.mov

It's a Quicktime file so its pretty big and takes time to download
but it is worth it.

What makes it work is they've inserted some Serling voice-overs that
if you didn't know better, you'd swear were written for POTA. A
while back we tried to come up with a Serling voice-over specific to
POTA. Here's what I did:

"Submitted for your approval George Taylor, astronaut and cynic. A
man so critical of his own species and civilzation he has left it on
a quest to find something better. Mr. Taylor is about to find the
answers he seeks on a journey that will end in The Twilight Zone."

After a six-year hiatus during which he directed just two documentary films about the underwater inspections of the sunken ships The Titanic and The Bismarck, James Cameron
has indicated that he will return to theatrical features with a science-fiction film to be produced later this year for 20th Century Fox. As reported by Daily Variety, Cameron made the announcement at a gathering of sci-fi buffs in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The trade publication indicated that Cameron provided little additional information about the project, which would be his first since his 1997 blockbuster Titanic grossed $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office. Cameron told his audience that he planned to shoot the film with high-definition 3-D video cameras and that it would include "a pile of special effects."

Greg, I think anything positive you do to help this group would be a godsend.

You might want to map out the logistics first and get a plan....maybe do the smaller stuff first.  Talk to Hunter and Greg P to get some pointers maybe too.  I will also help in any way I can (need someone to crack a whip?).

And regardless of all the negative things a few people here want to say, my interest is because I care about this group (other than David I have been here longer than ANY of you), and I care about the image of POTA fans that the precious new fans see.  I hope the pota group can exist harmoniously with the DG, sharing topics, resources etc.  That's what POTA is about - not segregation and negativity....learning from mistakes and building a new future.  The reason I think you need to remove all filth and negativity from the archives is that I want to be able to send new DG members over here.  The way I see it, this group is an address...like a house on a street.  But this house has been vandalised and I would like to see it repaired before I send my friends to visit.

Planet of the Apes
Fox Home Entertainment / 1968 / 112 Minutes / Rated G
Street date: February 3, 2004
Reviewed by Cliff Stephenson & Peter M. Bracke on January 22, 2004. (Bio / Equipment list
)

Of all the science fiction films in the history of cinema, few are as revered as the original Planet of the Apes. What should have been an utterly laughable adaptation of questionable source material (even author Pierre Boulle considered it one of his lessor works) evolved into a cultural phenomenon that has now spanned over three decades, five sequels, a TV series and a big-budget remake. But what remains so compelling about this simple story is not the makeup, the effects or the technology, but that it is such a potent allegory. For Apes is little more than a thinly veiled statement on the downturn in human evolution and the unending witch hunt for those unlike us. And is as timely today as it ever was.

Marooned on a alien planet 2000 years in the future, Astronaut George Taylor finds himself suddenly at the opposite end of the evolutionary scale. In this strange world apes are in control, with humans existing as mere savages. But through the compassion of a pair of intellectual chimpanzees, Cornelius and Zira, Taylor has a slim chance to escape the cages of his oppressors. But is there more to this seemingly alien planet than meets the eye - and what secrets does it hold in Taylor's search for his long lost home?

That Planet of the Apes is an obvious allegory for oppression, discrimination and prejudice is of course now well known, as is its classic ending (which was ruined for years by the previous VHS and DVD box covers). But because the film so expertly constructs the social order of the apes, it is more than just still relevant today, but has achieved the status of timeless classic. Effects-wise, it hasn't fared so well - I can't help but to snicker at the primarily immobile facial activity of almost all the apes. Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter seemed to have mastered the necessary skills to act through the groundbreaking prosthetics, but other actors aren't as generous. This plays most obviously in the mouths of the apes as some of them barely open when the character speaks.

Is this a reason to avoid the film? Absolutely not - despite the considerable advancements in special effects since 1968, Planet of the Apes proves that science fiction has always been more about we humans today than it is about technology, gadgets and spaceships.

Video: How Does The Disc Look?

Originally released on DVD in 1998 in a perfectly fine if far from spectacular non-anamorphic widescreen transfer, Fox Home Entertainment has at last reissued the film here in 2.35:1 anamorphic. Overall it is a step up from the original release, but this still looks like a flick from 1968, albeit a well-produced one. The condition of the source material this time looks about as good, with only a few minor blemishes and some minor grain, especially during any matte or effects shots. Blacks are quite solid throughout and contrast good, and also impressive is color reproduction - hues are generally clean, vibrant and free of any real noise or smearing. Best of all is the increased detail due to the anamorphic enhancement; gone is most of the jaggies that plagued the previous DVD, although effects shots and some of the most sharply contrasted objects still display some minor ringing. But overall, this is a fine transfer and an improvement over the lackluster first DVD.

Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?

Also new to this edition is a DTS 5.1 remix, plus a Dolby Digital 5.1 option. Both sound dated; frequency response is cramped and flat, with rather shrill highs and low end that fails to sparkle. Overall the mix is very front-heavy, even the DTS track - I had trouble discerning any rear channel activity at all, even during the most aggressive sequences save for some bleed. Jerry Goldsmith's score also is directed primarily to the front channel. Only some stereo effects were truly evident. I suppose this was a nice try on Fox's part, but to be honest I found neither of these remixes to be particularly effective.

Also included are French Dolby 2.0 surround and Spanish mono dubs, English and Spanish subtitles, and English Closed Captions.

Supplements: What Goodies Are There? Aside from the nice new transfer, the main draw here are the two discs of extras, although those familiar with the previous Apes box set and Image's two-disc Behind the Planet of the Apes collector's edition will experience some major deja vu. The vast majority of what is here has been seen before, but it is still nice to have it all in one place. The audio commentaries are a real mixed bag. The first track with stars Roddy McDowell, Natalie Trundy and Kim Hunter, and makeup artist John Chambers, is both a cheat and a disappointment. It is a very slim partial track (I counted perhaps 30 minutes of talking at best) and it doesn't even jump to the scenes with commentary automatically, making for endless passages of dead silence. It was also poorly recorded - Hunter sounds like she is in a wind tunnel - and given the fact that little here is all that much different than what you get in the documentary, one wonders why they bothered at all. Much better is the isolated score and commentary by Jerry Goldsmith. His landmark score is presented in Dolby 2.0 stereo with the composer speaking during silent passages. He is an engaging speaker and makes a great addition, as he is not well-represented in the video-based extras. Also very strong is the text commentary by Eric Greene, author of "Planet of the Apes as American Myth," which is quite scholarly but fascinating. Greene, despite the limited nature of a text commentary, imparts a wealth of analysis and his theories, even the more outlandish ones, are intriguing. Disc two is where the majority of the extras can be found. The first and by far most robust section is Exploring the Apes . Here you will find almost all of the contents of the Image two-disc Behind the Planet of the Apes special edition, the highlight being the two-hour documentary of the same name which first premiered on American Movie Classics on September 6, 1998, as part of their "Hollywood Real to Reel" series. They don't make 'em like this anymore - feature-length, comprehensive, well-produced and covering all of the five films in the original series. Of course, the first gets by far the most coverage, but each film is touched upon in enough detail that only diehard fans will likely be disappointed. Interviews that were new at the time of this documentary's production are a real highlight (Fox has not reedited or updated it in any way), including Charlton Heston, McDowall (who also narrates) and Hunter, plus producer Richard Zanuck, writer Pierre Boulle and various cast and crew. Also touched upon is the whole Apes phenomenon, including the endless merchandising and even the failed "Back to the Planet of the Apes" television series. A fabulous documentary. Also in the Exploring the Apes section is a wealth of additional making-of material. There are three self-contained featurettes: 1967 NATO Presentation (10 minutes) is essentially a trailer but ends with a great pitch by Heston to exhibitors, to revel in such a "highly exploitable" epic; the original 1968 Featurette (5 minutes) is pretty cheesy but does include some nice concept sketches and makeup footage; and then there is A Look Behind the Planet of the Apes (15 minutes), produced in 1972 and hosted by Heston, which is a pretty dang cheesy makeup making-of and appears to have been made for TV. Raw making-of footage includes "Don Taylor Directing Escape From The Planet of the Apes" and "J. Lee Thompson Directing Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" (7 minutes and 1 minute, respectively), plus the narrated "Planet of the Apes Makeup Test with Edward G. Robinson" from 1966 (9 minutes), "Planet of the Apes Dailies and Outtakes" (no audio, 18 minutes) and best of all, "Roddy McDowall Home Movies" (20 minutes), which is a nicely-edited assemblage of the makeup process and shooting a couple of the film's most famous scenes. All of these featurettes are in full frame, except the Edward G. Robinson makeup test, which is in non-anamorphic widescreen. This set's remaining three sections are initially exciting but ultimately very weak. Best of all is a Publicity section with theatrical trailers for all five original Apes films (but not the Tim Burton remake) plus a teaser for the original flick. (All the trailers are presented in 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and mono.) Also featured here are two text reviews of the original film, plus a short 1-minute video montage of various Apes posters, most from foreign territories. The Galleries section features another short 1-mintue montage of conceptual art sketches by Morton Haack, plus a 2-minute collection of side-by-side actor-versus-ape photos and production and publicity stills. And last but not least is - English 5.1 Surround, which houses two more 1-minute montages: "Apes Merchandise" - a look at various Apes action figures, and "Ape Collections," with more figurines/rare collectibles grouped by character. Last but not least is an 8-page color foldout with some brief historical notes on the Apes phenomenon. DVD-ROM Exclusives: What do you get when you pop the disc in your PC?

There is only one PC extra included, a nice little Planet of the Apes Chronology timeline that charts the history of the Apes movies and phenomenon. The graphics are attractive, and there is a good amount of production note and factoid info as you click across the timeline. Note that there is no actual interactivity with the disc itself - this is its own application housed on the disc (which should self-execute on a PC, or when the application is found and double-clicked on a Mac). So as such, there is no direct scene access, DVD controls or links to active online content.

Parting Thoughts

This new 35th Anniversary Edition of PLanet of the Apes is a bit of a curiosity. Rather than time the release of a deluxe box set back in 2001 with the Tim burton remake - when Apes nostalgia was at its peak - Fox issued fairly bare-bones discs that just didn't cut it. This new reissue certainly is an improvement - better transfer and considerable supplements, and all for a very reasonable $26.95 list. Even if you own the previous release, this is worth picking, and let's hope it sells well, so Fox will reissue all of the other Apes flicks in anamorphic widescreen.

.html.htmlFor anyone here from the NYC area, check out these ads I just found.  They were the TV ads for the New York City ABC affiliate Channel 7 that used to show a 4:30 p.m. movie every weekday.
The heyday of this was in the 70s, but I used to live in the NYC area in the 60s and I can remember when movies were shown on all the channels there.  This was in the days before home video so this was your only chance to see these films (mostly genre films presented during theme weeks).  The APES films were shown between May 1977 and September 1981.

And FYI I do remember the 4:30 Movie (4:30 Film Clips as we use to
call it). It was the first place I saw the Alpha-Omega bomb scenes
in Battle. But they use to cut the hell out of the movies. I
remember one time they cut from Brent and Nova riding away from his
crashed ship to them riding up to the entance to the subway station
chased but the Gorillas. How Brent changed clothes and the one horse
turned into two was left to the imagination.
At least they showed Planet in two parts so there were no cuts.

I like to pretend that's what happened to the 2001 film. There was this really cool scene where Thade broke out of the space ship, was granted god like powers to rapidly evolve all the apes of earth and eradicate the humans, and go to the costume store and pick up an Abraham Lincoln costume, but those darn editors cut it so be could see scenes of people walking.

Video killed the 4:30 movie.  Now you've got all the cable channels, but what we really need are more channels like Turner Classic Movies.  Fox Movie Channel isn't enough like TCM for me but at least it's around.

    same 'universe' as the original
    movie?

    CHOICES AND RESULTS
    - It shares the same universe and even the same timeline, 6 votes,
    20.00%
    - It share the same universe but a different timeline , 6 votes,
    20.00%
    - It takes place in a totally unrelated universe , 15 votes, 50.00%
    - I don't know and thinking about it too much really hurts my head,
    3 votes,

I just found out that Norman Burton was killed in a car accident

returned to the POTA series in 1971 (this time as a human) playing
the U.S. Army General on the Presidential Commission in Escape. That
same year he had a much bigger role in 'Diamonds are Forever'
playing Felix Leiter, James Bond's CIA counterpart. In 1974 Burton
was back in ape make-up playing Galen's father Yalu in the POTA TV
series. Sadly, he was killed on November 29th, less than one week
    shy of his 70th Birthday.

Yes, he was the gorilla in PLANET that asks Dr. Zaius, "What's Dr. Zira trying to prove?"

This is sad news.  According to the Internet Movie Database he died in a car crash on the California/Arizona border while returning to his home in Mexico.

He was also supposedly a graduate of The Actor's Studio in New York.  I feel his best role was in the Jack Lemmon movie "Save the Tiger" (1973).  He was also in "The Towering Inferno" and was sometimes credited as Normann Burton.

    Hey everyone,

I know I promised a posting guidelines e-mail last week, but I've been busy, and have only tonight has the chance to type this up...

Essentially all I'm asking is that we all keep posts which are insults or other such comments about other list members off the list. In short, if it will offend another member, and the post is about them, it shouldn't be sent. If you have any questions about a specific post I will be happy to address them off the list. If you do not know if a comment might offend another member of the list please e-mail me about it.

I don't care what has gone on in the past here, everyone has a fresh start. I truly hope all list members can get along, but I understand that is unlikely. All I ask is that you check your anger at the door and talk about POTA, not who you like or dislike.  If anyone offends you, please let me know offlist, and if you must have your say on the list, please be polite. Let the list know your offended by a comment politely and ask for an apology, and if you happen to be the offending party, please apologize. Any arguments or hatred have no place here. Personal disagreements are just that, and should be dealt with privately, not on the list.

Regarding other posts, I have no problem with the occasional off topic post, but please label it as such. As far as controversial subjects go, Please label them "PO" for potentially offensive. If any subject is too edgy, another list for people who wish to speak about it is a possibility. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I hope you everyone is enjoying the list more lately then before, and if you have any concerns, I am always available off the list to discuss them

    Thanks,

Subject: DVD Review: PLANET OF THE APES: 35th Anniversary Edition

    .html.htmlFrom FILMSCOREMONTHLY.COM:  A surprise here -- no isolated score!???

PLANET OF THE APES: 35th Anniversary Edition (****, 1968), Available February 3rd. 112 mins., G, Fox. DVD SPECIAL FEATURES: Commentary by Jerry Goldsmith; commentary by John Chambers, Kim Hunter and Roddy McDowall; Full-length "Behind the Planet of the Apes" documentary; featurettes, trailers; text commentary; 2.35 Widescreen (16:9 enhanced), 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital sound.

Two-disc re-issue of the original and best film in the "Planet of the Apes" series boasts a newly enhanced 16:9 transfer and a few new supplements, including a commentary track by Jerry Goldsmith.

Goldsmith is on-hand to talk about his experience working with Franklin F. Schaffner, utilizing early synthesizers and divulging some of the tricks he employed to create the movie's unusual soundscape. The composer is candid about his relationship with the filmmaker and the strengths and weaknesses of the movie, including the decision to play the climactic twist ending without music (Goldsmith says that Charlton Heston was a bit over the top by himself, and didn't need any score to accompany him!). Note that this is a commentary track and NOT an isolated score with composer comments -- I'm not sure if the early news about this DVD was incorrect or not, but anyone anticipating an isolated score should be aware that there isn't one here.

For other new supplements, Fox's 35th Anniversary Edition adds a strong text commentary track (filled with excellent ancedotes), and a secondary audio commentary with Kim Hunter, John Chambers, and the late Roddy McDowall, which obviously was cobbled together from old interviews. While this might have been a good idea, the track is so sporadic in nature that you might think someone made a mistake in the editing department (long stretches of time go by with no commentary at all).

Far better is the inclusion, on the second disc, of the outstanding "Behind the Planet of the Apes" two-hour documentary. This is the same documentary that AMC produced for the Apes' 30th Anniversary a few years ago, but it's still the best single program made about the creation of the series. Also on the supplemental disc are a handful of vintage featurettes and trailers, from a NATO reel to even brief footage of Don Taylor and J. Lee Thompson directing the third and fourth entries in the series, respectively. Nearly 20 minutes of Roddy McDowall's home movies are also included, and the transfer on these materials is surprisingly pristine.

While a few of these featurettes and the documentary were previously released by Image in their excellent 2-disc "Behind the Planet of the Apes" DVD set (which also contained an unedited, two-hour interview with McDowall that's worth the price of that release alone), Fox has upped the ante of this "Apes" DVD by remastering the film itself in 16:9 and including 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital soundtracks. Those with huge plasma TVs may see a striking difference between this DVD and the previous release, though truth be told they looked comparable on my standard TV set, with the new transfer appearing slightly more colorful. The soundtracks also sound identical -- DTS doesn't do a whole lot to increase the fidelity of late '60s theatrical sound.

Nevertheless, the addition of the text anecdotes, Goldsmith's commentary, and a few new featurettes will make this "Apes" edition a definite purchase for fans, while the inclusion of the two-hour documentary makes this, overall, the definitive DVD release of the 1968 sci-fi classic to date.

    I got mine today.

The idiots sent me the full screen instead of the wide screen version.

I guess it begs the question "How many die-herd ape fans are there?", and then you need to ask "How many of these will bother?".  I understand it could appeal to Goldsmith fans too - but Golsmith fans would have seen him live and would already know much of what he says in his commentary (which has enormous pauses in it and is certainly not for the impatient).

So who are they marketing this DVD to?

If it IS to the die-hard POTA fan (all 25 of them), I suspect a large percentage of these will pass if they have the "Behind" DVD already.

Haven't watched the home movies yet, but these should be interesting...however no huge added value (unless they close some unanswered alternate timeline theories, which I DOUBT!).

The Mego ads are cool.  I have seen them all but the quality on the DVD is cool.

Very disappointing as far as VALUE goes.  Some nice additions, but if I was guided by my BRAIN when it comes to POTA I would never have bothered to make this purchase.

Hey Rory, you know you would get mine in 3 days if I send it Global Priority!  ;)

Subject: "And that completes my final report..."
    .html
The POTA film phenomenon began with a soliloquy from a man who was
essentially an iconoclastic, pessimistic philosopher. He was giving
his "final report"... and, unfortunately, in regards to this Yahoo
POTA group, I find myself in a similar situation. This will be my
final message to this group -- provided, of course, that the recently-
returned moderator allows it to go through.

What I loved about this group was that there was no moderation, save
that which was practiced by each member willingly. People were free
to disagree; people were free to let themselves get mean-spirited in
their disagreements, and "flame-wars" would erupt. And a lot of folks
got to disliking that, preferring to be in a POTA chat site where
they could feel safe that such "offensive" confrontationalism would
    not disturb their online experiences.

That led to the creation of an alternative POTA Yahoo site, where its
moderators would crack-the-whip and exercise powers of Censorship,
and would threaten to Ban members (and then actually do so). As far
as I was (and am) concerned, however well-meaning such a method may
be, it is in its way just another form of intolerance. And, like all
other forms of intolerance, it stifles communication between people
who will fear to voice an opinion lest somebody take 'offense' at it.
What recourse is there when ANYBODY can claim to be offended at
ANYTHING whatsoever? Where does it end?

This Yahoo POTA group's moderator, Dave, is a well-intentioned guy,
and I don't want anybody here to think that I don't recognize that.
But he and I have differing views on what kinds of censorship are
considered acceptable: I don't think that ANY kind is ever a good
thing, whereas he makes room for it in cases of potential 'offense'
    (witness his post below).

For a long time I have trumpeted this group's virtues, of it being
the ONLY site in Yahoo-land where POTA fans could say what they want
to say without fear of having their messages yanked for supposed
unsuitability. Without fear of being 'disinvited' -- which is the
effect that the threat of censorship has on me. Without fear of
having past archived messages deleted, in retrospect -- which has
recently been advocated on this site. In my opinion, that is
ethically equivalent to Zaius destroying the artifacts Cornelius
discovered -- and to the forced lobotomization of Landon: the
destruction of Memory, of Identity. Like it or not, those archived
messages depict what this group's members are REALLY like -- warts
    and all.

Dave has assured me, in private e-mails, that he will not be deleting
any of those archives, which is good to hear. However, he has refused
to post a message I attempted to send several days ago, for fear that
it would 'offend' somebody. Thus, in my opinion, POTA fans have lost
the only site in Yahoo-land where they could voice an opinion -- no
matter how controversial, potentially-offensive, or unsettling it may
be -- without fear of being subjected to censorship.

I begged Dave not to go down that route. I told him that in my
opinion it would do more harm than good, by stifling free speech. He
and I see things differently. But... this is HIS group, no matter the
fact that he left it to its own devices for a looooong time -- and he
can do whatsoever he wants with it. Unfortunately, he's decided to
start doing things as a moderator that just don't sit well with me. I
know he means well, and I respect that, but it just bugs the ****
outta me that a POTA site -- of ALL places -- is reverting to a
speech-stifling modus operandi. Free speech is at the very heart of
what the POTA films (etc) were really all about. They weren't
just "adventures among the monkeys" -- they were ABOUT something. And
any POTA group, in my opinion, ought to exemplify that same
something. It saddens me that Dave's group no longer does. He has
good intentions, I know, but somebody once said that the road to Hell
is paved with 'em, and in my view that's what has happened here.

I'll continue to 'lurk' over here, on occasion, but in good
conscience I cannot be an active member anymore, because I do not
feel FREE to be a contributing member. Being censored doesn't sit
well with me, and though it pains me I've found that I have had to do
something I didn't think would ever be necessary. And I just KNOW I'm
gonna get pilloried for it by certain someones out there, but here's
what's what: because I want there to be a place in Yahoo-land where
POTA fans can enjoy the unqualified freedom to have their say, free
of any fears of being censored or banned, I did what Dave suggested,
and started up a Yahoo POTA group of my own. It may very well be that
I'll be the only person posting messages on it, like Heston in "THE
GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD" as John-the-Baptist, crying in the
wilderness and all that. But I want there to be a place where anybody
can say what they want to say and not be censored or banned. If they
make asses outta themselves, by intentionally provoking animosity, so
be it. I won't encourage such involvement by anybody, but as long as
it ain't criminal (i.e. libelous, that sort of thing), I'll allow it.
Anybody can join, if they so desire. People who don't want to find
themselves potentially reading a "flame" here and there may not
particularly wish to, but they will always be FREE to, if they so
    desire.

    The homepage is at:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/POTA_Phenomenon

    The group's email address is:
    POTA_Phenomenon@yahoogroups.com

If I have something to say about POTA, chances are it'll be posted
there. Those of you who don't care about anything I may have to say
about POTA will undoubtedly ignore me and this new group, which they
are free to do. To each their own. If you'd like to join it, it's
open to everybody, and anybody will be able to access its archives
(which, so far, only have my 1st message in it, thought). And I will
be a hands-off moderator; I will never ban a member, nor will I ever
censor anybody's post. I don't like when it happens to me, and I
don't ever think it's a good thing, even when a part of me would like
to exercise that power. For me, that's "the dark side", and I'm
    bewaring it.

It's been fun -- until recently, that is -- and I wish you all well.

I'd rather have Goldsmith blabbing than an isolated score. I could just listen to the soundtrack.
This release is kind of a rip-off to fans who bought the "Behind" 2-disc, but the real target is the people who just want the first movie. At least this way the documentary comes with it and it might interest them in the sequels. The doc is very eloquent about the sequels. I know at least one young fan who became a fan because of the documentary. - - - Jeff

Subject: [Planet of the Apes] DVD Review: PLANET OF THE APES: 35th Anniversary Edition

From FILMSCOREMONTHLY.COM:  A surprise here -- no isolated score!???

I know what you mean. Back on Labor Day 1998 when the Doc premiered
on AMC I was at my parents watching it with my mother. About half
way through my then 12 year old nephew came in and started watching
it with us. From that day on he was a POTA fan.

the first movie. At least this way the documentary comes with it and

about the sequels. I know at least one young fan who became a fan

I for one want to appaud Dave/Caesar's efforts to revitalize this
group. He deserves our support, not critizism. For too long this was
a house without parents where the children were left to run amok.
Any community needs rules and someone to enforce them. Without them
you have anarchy. Now thanks to Dave/Caesar this group can regain
its former glory and I want to thank him for his efforts.

Perhaps.  What's really bothering me is the inclusion of so much of the sequel stuff.  You know why I would think so.

Michael, how many Mego ads are there? I have poor quality VHS versions but it might be worth the price of admission just for those. I don't have to pay postage.
Who is it for? I figure the original movie sold well in the previous edition and would continue to sell. It's a classic that new people get introduced to all the time. This time they'll get the documentary with it, which may be a nice introduction to the sequels (usually the sequels' bad reputations preceed them). So I'd say the main target is getting the casual fans of the original on board. The "Behind" 2-disc was released by Image, so maybe Fox feels they should profit more from the extras. And the big attraction is the "improved" picture and sound (which doesn't sound that improved). Both Harry and Moriarty of the famous aintitcool.com have it as a top pick for February. - - - Jeff

Hey Rory, you know you would get mine in 3 days if I send it Global Priority!  ;)

Just saw this review on Amazon for the new DVD. Thought is was of
    interest.

Love Apes, Hate Greed, January 14, 2004

Reviewer: John Gentile from Hoboken, NJ

This is the third time Fox has release "Planet of the Apes" on DVD.
First in a box set with the four other movies and a documentary
disc, second by itself. Now the 35th Anniversary edition. All the
extras you see listed are simply repeated, except for the commentary
by the actors and Jerry Goldsmith. Is it worth another 25-20 bucks
for this edition, if you have the first? It depends on how big a
    fanatic you are.

However, it is amazing how many times a studio will rerelase a film
on DVD, milking the die-hard fans of more money every few years.
It's simply not fair. The first edition should have included
commentary (after all, this commentary had to be taped a while ago
since Roddy McDowell has long since passed away).
Studios love when a format (such as VHS) becomes obsolete, they can
sell their libraries all over again.

The Simpsons hit the nail on the head in a recent episode. Homer is
marching through a garbage dump. He passes by a pile of VHS tapes,
next he passes an empty spot with a sign: "Reserved for DVD's".

If you are looking to upgrade your VHS copy, maybe you should wait
for the Apes Virtual Reality Chip. On second thought, go for the
DVD, it'll be good for the economy!

For too long this was a house without parents where the children were left to run amok.

I doubt this will get through, but I'll give it a shot.  As far as people behaving like children, yeah, you got that right.  Lord of the Flies.  Certain kids ran off with the conch shell and now their back on this side of the island.  And since they get to make snide comments like this and get away with it, I think I'll follow Patrick's lead and bail.  It's been fun kids.
