I was listing the contents of "Apesfan" #
1 for Dave B. and there was a letter from a Mario who said Eric Braeden told
him they shot an alternate death scene for Cornelius where he was killed by
attack dogs. Just throwing this out there. - - -

Eric Braedon (Hasslein to POTA fans, an icon
to soap opera fans for "The Young and the Restless") talked to Arthur Jacobs'
buddy Army Archerd yesterday and his comments appeared in today's (2/24)
"Variety" column.
"Israel needs all the support we can give it
(he's just returned from Tel Aviv). I was walking 300 yards from the
intersection where a suicide bomber struck again Sunday. I went to hospitals to
see some of the wounded. This really gets to you. I spoke to one woman whose
daughter was killed similarly two years ago, and her son this time." Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon is a fan of Braeden's and sat next to him at a state
dinner, where Braeden spoke. He also met with the former Prime Minister Shimon
Peres one-on-one. He said one of the most emotional moments was visiting the
Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem. A new wing will be dedicated in Feb. 2005 and he's
been invited to speak. He will be in New York next week to tape an episode of
the show "Hope and Faith".
Meanwhile, the DVD of "Spy Kids 3-D" is out
today, with Ricardo Montalban facing off against Sylvester
Stallone. - - - Jeff

| Subject: New Trading Cards and a PLAN....et of the apes....... |
.htmlOK, let me ape-ologise that all 5 sites didn't get my email yesterday - I
have been having trouble posting to the sites from home and I can't post to
the DG from work. Thanks to Rory for spreading the word.
Here is my humble opinion.
This Trading Card set from Rittenhouse is both disappointing and at the same
time (far more!) exciting.
http://www.scifihobby.com/products/planetoftheapes/heston/
I am disappointed there are only 9 cards and that they cost $2 each. But
this is not SO bad and we are empowered to do something about it!
Now here come the GOOD points:
(1) The 9-card set fits into a 9-card sleeve and will go nicely in my "POTA
Archives" folder;
(2) They look great and are WELL DESIGNED! $2 for this, I'll give you $5!
(3) This was originally to be a SUBSET in a MUCH larger series, and may
STILL be just that. No second guessing Fox here, as with the outcome of
buying out 35th Anniversary DVDs - the OWNER of the company has said "Sell
out - we make new sets". And he's not kidding. He has plans (and deals
with actors and Mr Goldsmith for Rory) to do autograph cards, holograms,
deleted scenes, TV Show, Cartoon series - YOU NAME IT! He wants to do MUCH
mor POTA and he will not stop doing it if he sells out;
(4) This is a LIMITED set! There are only 999 and don't be surprised if
dealers snap them up! Nearly EVERY Rittenhouse set SELLS OUT before the
release date. That means not bargain bins, no mess, no fuss, just start
planning the next set. That's just BEAUTIFUL! Medicom should have limited
their sets (did anyone detect a note of bitterness from them in my Fax
response from the company?), as should have MOST makers of POTA stuff;
(5) The owner of the company has sought to "get it right" with his plans by
asking fans what they want.
Now, I had to struggle hard with Steve at Rittenhouse to get him to place a
link to the POTADG on his site. And now you all know why there's been a
huge emphasis on:
(A) Getting a focal page to lead fans to other POTA places; and
(B) Behaving ourselves civilly.
Planet of the Apes is like a cow in pain with a dry teat and her adult
calves have been eaten by Fox Execs but they keep milking the poor cow
anyway. My plan to return it to its former glory begins with RECRUITMENT.
We need to gather the fans and keep them interested (and thanks to Fox,
Sideshow and Rittenhouse, and all the fans producing quality material,
that's an easy job right now!).
I hope to make the Fan Club even LARGER and reach those not yet on the web,
and the most effective way to target that is to "piggyback" comercial
ventures. Imagine the amount of recruits we could have got if there was a
web and street address for a central POTA contact on the back of Medicom
figures!
Imagine then the reaction of the recruits if they log on and find people
squabbling. Most people won't stay for long in that environment. That's
why I chose the DG as the first point of contact, and then if they decide
they want something else they can head there.
The reasons I want a lot of recruits are:
(1) Numbers will sway big corporations like Fox;
(2) There are so many unsolved mysteries re POTA (like where were the Marvel
comics heading and what was planeed before they were axed) and the only way
to discover the answers is through networking the questions. With
visibility answers will come (if there ARE any answers).
So my strong suggestion is that you all get on-line and order your trading
cards. If you have a spare $18 000 - BUY THEM ALL! And let's hurry up and
list/define the various groups and websites and get POTA back on the map.

.html The idea is for them to make SOME money here (how much of that $2 per card
do you think Fox get?).
They also went for the widest possible appeal and this way the target
audience is:
(1) POTA Fans;
(2) Heston fans; and
(3) Men and women who like photos of bare chested men (Brent and Mez!).
OH...and on the rear of the 9th card you get 2 gorillas!
Hey, why didn't they do a shot of Heston's bare ass at the trial?
Anyway, if these DON'T sell out, I can guarantee it ain't coz they were
marketed wrong, it is because there are only 205 POTA fans! And me, I
reckon there's a whole lot more out there.

the Rings" company for their 11 Oscars tonight. As a POTA fan I applaud a
sci-fi/fantasy film that finally took home the top prize. As far as i know, it's
a first. "Around the World in 80 Days" won in the '50's but this is the first
with creatures and an otherworldly tale, and (most importantly) unified by
excellent storytelling. POTA should've been nominated, "2001" should've won in
'68, but it's a known fact that such movies don't get recognized. Until
tonight.
"Lord of the Rings" won 11 Oscars, tying
with 2 others for most Oscars ever. The other two are "Titanic" and "Ben Hur".
What do these 3 films have in common? POTA. Both Peter Jackson and James Cameron
were involved with the POTA redo at various points, and "Ben Hur" starred
what's-his-face. "Lord of the Rings" began the same year as the POTA redo
finally arrived and now takes the Oscar instead of "Big Fish" by the POTA2001
folks. How do you like them apples, Richard Zanuck? Beaten by a "gimmick"
picture.
My CG-enhanced hat is off to "Lord of the
Rings"! - - - Jeff

.html I was on a trip to Palm Beach, FL. Me and my friend Jill took in a
cabaret show at The Colony Hotel's Royal Room. The performer was
the man-- Two Time Tony Winner-- James Naughton -- aka Pete Burke!
Hi from Jill... He was incredible! What a voice! After his set we
were welcomed to the Polo Room bar to met him. A crowd surrounded
him as he sipped his Heinekin. I got his autogragh and had some
pics taken with him. At 58 Mr. Naughton is sexy and a real
charmer. If any of you get the chance to make one of his shows do
so. He's guranteed to make you swoon!

I received the following email this afternoon from Brian Penikas at
Apemania < http://www.apemania.com/>. He asked me to share it with
you all.
Hi Helen,
Please let everyone know the "skinny" on the Ape mannequins in the
latest Ebay PROFILES in HISTORY auction (March 31st).
Only one of the mannequins featured came from our studio. That's the
orangutan. The others were made by a collector who's trying to cash
in
on the success of our other mannequins that were auctioned last year.
He bought parts from us and threw those "less than desirable" displays
together pretty quick and cheap. The quality (or lack thereof) really
shows, and is embarrassing to my crew and myself, especially since the
auction is crediting us for "parts".
Just thought you could help spread the word through the webring
before I
start getting inundated with questions as to why the display look so
shoddy.

a rather loose talk show. Director Kevin Smith talks about how the ending of
POTA2001 resembles a "Jay and Silent Bob" comic book he did and how Tim Burton
took a joke he made about it badly. Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Colin
Farrell are also hanging out. WARNING: MATURE LANGUAGE!

Albert Einstein. Icon of Science. Ladies'
Man. Now, Stanford University is taking him on. Einstein's theories are a
cornerstone of the idea of time travel through space, something at the heart of
POTA. Now it may be judgement day. A project that has suffered delays, budget
battles, etc. for 40 years is set to blast off April 17. A satellite will be
sent into space carrying 4 gyroscopes ("small balls of fused quartz, pure to
within 2 parts per million and coated thinly with the element niobium. Each is
the size of a pingpong ball and, according to the scientists, each is the most
perfectly rounded object ever fabricated" - - - San Francisco Chronicle). The
gyroscopes are cooled and spun by jets of liquid helium at 450 degrees below
zero. They can spin as fast as 10,000 revolutions per minute with total
regularity and total precision virtually forever, if they aren't disturbed by an
outside force.
The satellite will have a small telescope on
board, and the four gyroscopes will be aligned through the telescope with a
guide star called IM Pergasi. The satellite will orbit Earth for 16 months at
400 miles above the Earth.
Einstein's General Theory of Relativity says
that the mass of an object in space warps both space and time
("space-time") around the object. The warped space-time causes all objects
in the vicinity of a more massive object to fall inward toward the object
("geodetic effect"). If the massive object is spinning (such as the Earth does
on it's axis), Einstein predicts the object would also drag space-time. The
space objects with these properties are often said to be neutron stars and
especially black holes. If these two theories are correct, the 4 gyroscopes
aboard the satellite should slowly point away from the guide star by an
infinitely tiny degree because of the warping and dragging effect of the Earth
spinning. If this happens, Einstein will have been proved right, and POTA fans
can sleep soundly, dreaming of astronauts getting warped and meeting Cornelius.

In March 1974 CBS was very high on POTA. The first 3 films had aired to big ratings in the fall of 1973 and the network was planning the TV series for September 1974. To promote the new series, Roddy McDowell guest starred on The Carol Burnett Show.
In one segment Roddy appeared in full ape make-up to joke with Carol as well as sing a duet. The syndicated version of the series (Carol Burnett & Friends) does not include this segment and it hasn't been broadcast anywhere since 1974.
Now 30 years later PotaDG is happy to include this rare piece of POTA history in the Videos section of the Group's Internal Website. You can access the Internal Website directly here: Website or come to he Yahoo home page:
PotaDG and click the appropriate link (Non-DG members use the Yahoo ID "potadgwebsite', pass-word is 'access').
Remember, there are still ten Easter Eggs on the site that lead to extra content (as well as a few fakes that lead back to other pages in the site). The first person that finds all the Easter Eggs will win a Medicom Dr. Zaius, Conquest Gorilla and a copy of Marvel POTA magazine issue #1. I can't understand why people are having trouble finding the Easter Eggs, they are right under your noses (hint, hint, hint!).
PS One piece of trivia. This episode of 'The Carol Burnett Show' was the one chosen to be archived at the Smithsonian Institution to represent the series. Who knows why this episode was selected? <.html <.html

should they?! Why does everybody hate us? We don't have any Vulcan characters or

Since next weekend starts the onslaught of
"summer movies" (with "Van Helsing"), I checked with www.boxofficemojo.com to see where
POTA2001 stands in the rank of opening weekends. It's # 12. Here's the
list:
1."Spiderman" - $114 million
2. "Matrix 2" - $91 million
3. "Harry Potter 1" - $90 million
4. "Harry Potter 2" - $88 million
5. "X-Men 2" - $85 million
6. "Passion of the Christ" - $83
million
7. "Star Wars: Episode 2" - $80
million
8. "Austin Powers 3" - $73 million
9. "Lord of the Rings 3" - $72 million
10. "Jurassic Park 2" - $72 million
11. "Finding Nemo (1?)" - $70 million
12. POTA2001 - $68 million (ironic amount,
eh?)
As you can see, Members of the Board, POTA
opened in good company and it would be in Fox's interest to explore this
further. No sequel, you say? Bah! - - - Jeff

News Corp. (owners of Twentieth Century Fox)
issued their third quarter financial report this week and it was another time to
open the champagne. News is very healthy and it couldn't happen to a more
humble, selfless and artistic type than Uncle Rupe Murdoch, who's at the wheel.
Money isn't important to him, it's how he can use that money to better society.
But despite himself, News Corp. and Fox are money machines and he'll just have
to live with it.
Anyway, the report mentioned that Fox's DVD
sales were up 6% and mentioned a couple titles. "The League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen" and the "catalogue title" ..."Planet of the Apes". Not bad. Getting
it's name in the company financial report might get even the most jaded money
man a thinkin'. No big deal, Fox makes movies for the art of it, not for
financial gain. Let's never forget that. But a little money never hurt anyone. -

I can get as many copies as are ordered. The cd-r will come in a slim
case with artwork from the movie (see attadhed jpeg). Most modern CD
players will play CD-Rs, though not all do. Customers need to be aware
of this before they order and need to make sure their player accepts
CD-Rs. The tracks are:
1. Main Title
2. LA Zoo
3. Milo's Death
4. Shopping
5. The Interrogation
6. Treated Like Dirt
7. Escape - Part One
8. Escape - Part Two

While I'm not attacking any of the polls themselves, maybe the people only want to vote for what they find interesting... Like if someone has a poll regarding pota2001, and someone doesn't like the pota2001 movie, but they love Planet of the Apes (1968) then they're not going to vote for what doesn't interest them... <.html

The plot thickens! Here's why there's a new
Zauis in town. According to Sideshow's website, the original Zauis sold out, all
3000 of them. People gotta have their Zauis! It's a known fact. Get on the ball

Sideshow Toys is releasing Dr. Zauis this
fall as part of their POTA dolly, er, action figure line. Now there's word that
there will be another Zauis available only through their website, a variant.
Thanks to www.mwctoys.com for the heads up.
This Zauis has a different costume and accessories than the other one. Kind of a
gaudy, Sunset Strip Zauis. Only 500 will be made. That means if every POTA fan
buys one there'll only be 450 left! Sounds like Sideshow has some confidence in
POTA if they're willing to roll the dice on a variant. Zauis won't betray us!
Here's a peek at this neato Zauis: http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=apes_12&item=75011&type=store

I stumbled on the release statement for
Sideshow's POTA figures ( http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=pota
). It says they're doing two versions of Taylor (astronaut and loin cloth), a
Nova, and both 12" and 1/4 scale (for $200) of Zauis and Cornelius. Plus a
polystone Lawgiver statue. I wonder if these are still planned? - - -

"Highlander", "Terminator", "Aliens", "Predator", "Scarface" (Al Pacino), Marvel
Comics, and something called "Star Wars". Those are just the latest. A look at
their site will also show stuff like "Lord of the Rings", "Simpsons", "Universal
Monsters", "Star Trek", blah, blah, blah. All I know is POTA has a lot of
competition there. It better perform (and it sounds like it is, especially Zauis

I have some great news. Myself and Glen have partnered with Caesar
(Dave Pasco) to bring this group back to its former glory. It's a
big challenge for us but we think we are up to the task. We wish our
good friends over at PotaDG the best of luck with their continued
endeavors (and we are all still waiting for the conclusion of
Michael, Dave and Neil's great comic "Beware the Beast" as well as
any future gems they have to offer).
Our goal here to create a resource & archive for all POTA fans and
to make this the premiere POTA group on Yahoo once again. To those
members here who are also members of DG, we hope that you have time
as well as a place in your heart for two great POTA groups. To
former or non-DG members, we hope you will look at this as a new
beginning. Please come back to join us in discussions and look at
our internal website (accessible from the Yahoo Home Page
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/Pota/).
It's a new day in POTAdom. We hope you all can join us. Thanks. <.html

the Medicom figures, the Rittenhouse Heston Cards and the new
Sideshow figures http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?
category=apes_12. Of course those are all classic Apes stuff. I
didn't keep track of all the remake stuff.
My personal favorite are the Medicom figures. I have an original
Japanese set MOC and a knock-off American set that I use to reenact
the films on those lonely Saturday nights;-)
