Glen tells me you had some really great scans that you shared with
the old Extreme group. It would be great if you could share them
here as well.
Also everyone should know the Rory provided the 4:30 movie ads on
the TV ads page of the internal site and the great window card at
the bottom of the Planet one sheet page.

Yes, nice site. I forwarded one of the BENEATH ads to Joe Russo to find out
if he's ever seen it before.

I hope you're going to this, James. I expect a full report on audience
response. Be sure to applaud loudly, maybe even cheer, when Jerry Goldsmith's
credit appears.

.html I guess I don't really understand everything going on and what the
question about Aldo is. Zira said that an ape spoke the first word to
a human and that word was no and that's how he Aldo started the apes
revolution. She wasn't specific as to what class of ape it was that
said no, just that it was an ape. To her saying ape was probably like
us saying the word human. What type of human? A white guy a black guy,
a Hispanic fellow. My point is that when she says ape she's probably
just talking about all apes in general, be it gorilla chimp or
orangutan. As to the Great lawgiver statue being an orangutan that
probably has to do with who wrote the sacred scrolls. Since the
Orangutans were the philosophers on the POTA I would figure that they
wrote the scrolls and most likely figured that it would have taken an
intellectual to actually start the revolution and thus it was only
obvious to them that the lawgiver was an orangutan. I'm sure if the
sacred scrolls were written by a gorilla Aldo would have been a
gorilla. One more thing, wasn't Aldo actually the name of Roddy's
character before he chose the name Ceasar? I'm pretty sure it was.

| Subject: Fay Wray dies |
|
.html NEW YORK TIMES (C) 2004
Fay Wray, an actress who appeared in about 100 movies but whose fame
is inextricably linked with the hours she spent struggling helplessly
and screaming in the eight-foot-hand of King Kong, died on Sunday
night at her apartment on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. She was 96.
Rick McKay, a friend, announced her death.
The huge success of "King Kong," a beauty-and-the beast film that
opened in New York at both Radio City Music Hall and the Roxy in
1933, led to roles for Miss Wray in other 1930's films in which her
life or her virtue, or both, were imperiled: "Dr. X," "The Mystery of
the Wax Museum," "The Vampire Bat" and "The Most Dangerous Game."
But she was always aware that she would be remembered for the
culmination of "King Kong," in which the giant ape from Skull Island
carries her to the top of the Empire State Building, gently places
her on a ledge, lunges furiously at fighter planes peppering him with
bullets and falls to his death from the 102-story skyscraper, his
strength and power neutralized by love. "When I'm in New York," the
actress wrote in The New York Times in 1969, "I look at the building
and feel as though it belongs to me, or is it vice versa?"
The most hazardous part of filming "King Kong," Miss Wray recalled,
was the tendency of the giant gorilla hand to loosen its grasp while
she was suspended high above the set. When she felt she was about to
fall, she implored the director, Merian C. Cooper, to have her
lowered to the stage floor to rest a few minutes before being secured
once again in the hand and sent aloft.
She spent an entire day recording additional screams, variously
shrill and plaintive, that an editor later inserted in the
soundtrack — too often, she later emphasized. Asked how she was able
to muster such animated cries, she replied, "I made myself believe
that the nearest possible hope of rescue was at least a mile away."
Over the years, Miss Wray said, she came to feel that Kong
had "become a spiritual thing to many people, including me."
"Although he had tremendous strength and power to destroy, some kind
of instinct made him appreciate what he saw as beautiful," she said
in a 1993 interview. "Just before he dies, he reaches toward me, but
can't quite reach. The movie affects males of all ages. Recently, a 6-
year-old boy said to me, `I've been waiting to meet you for half my
life.' "
In a 1987 interview, Miss Wray said she had been sent a script for
the 1976 remake of "King Kong," in which Jessica Lange played Kong's
co-star, because its producers wanted her to play a small role. She
said she disliked the script and declined the offer, because "the
film I made was so extraordinary, so full of imagination and special
effects, that it will never be equaled."
"They shouldn't have tried," she added.
Fay Wray was born on Sept. 15, 1907, on a farm in Alberta, Canada,
the daughter of Jerry Wray, an inventor, and his wife, Vina. The
couple separated when Fay was 12, and her mother moved to Los Angeles
with her five children. As a teen-ager, Miss Wray began acting in bit
parts in movies, then won supporting roles.
After graduating from Hollywood High School, she was the ingénue in a
half-dozen silent westerns and played the bride in Erich von
Stroheim's 1928 silent classic "The Wedding March." Among her
prominent sound films were "The Four Feathers" (1929), "Dirigible"
(1931), "One Sunday Afternoon" (1933), "Viva Villa!" (1934) and "The
Affairs of Cellini" (1934).
Miss Wray was always drawn to writers, as she recounted in her 1989
autobiography, "On the Other Hand." She was just 19 when she married
John Monk Saunders, a Rhodes scholar and screenwriter known for films
like "Wings" and "The Dawn Patrol." Miss Wray recalled that her
husband "had this theme in his life of living dangerously and dying
young." He was a womanizer, an alcoholic and a drug addict, and she
divorced him, she said, after he injected her with drugs while she
slept, sold their house and their furniture and kept the money, and
disappeared for a time with their baby daughter, Susan. During the 11
years they were married, Miss Wray and her husband each earned half a
million dollars, but nothing was left. Mr. Saunders hanged himself in
1940, at 43.
She was pursued by Sinclair Lewis and had a long romance with
Clifford Odets. In 1942, she was married to Robert Riskin, the
Academy Award-winning screenwriter of "It Happened One Night," "Mr.
Deeds Goes to Town," and "Lost Horizon." They had two children, Vicki
and Robert Jr., who survive her, as does her daughter Susan. Mr.
Riskin had a stroke in 1950 and died five years later. In 1971, she
married Dr. Sanford Rothenberg, a neurosurgeon who had been one of
Mr. Riskin's doctors. Dr. Rothenberg died in 1991.
Miss Wray retired in 1942, but made occasional movies in the 1950's
and starred in "Gideon's Trumpet," a 1979 film with Henry Fonda. On
television, she starred in a situation comedy, "The Pride of the
Family," from 1953 to 1955. In later years, she also wrote plays that
were produced in regional theaters.
When Aljean Harmetz of The New York Times visited her in 1989, she
found Miss Wray, then 81, a "cheery woman, a mother hen with black
leather pumps, pearls at the throat, a splash of bright red lipstick
and auburn hair."
Miss Wray said: "I find it not acceptable when people blame Hollywood
for the things that happened to them. Films are wonderful. I've had a
beautiful life because of films."

.htmlArmondo probably changed Milo/Caesar's name for security reasons. If
the authorities had ever found out that he had a chimp name Milo in
his circus they would have become suspicious. The weird part is that
he was about to find his name immediately in the Bible. (okay... so
this isn't really my own theory, I stole it from my other group. But
it does explain a lot. I don't own it!) Makes sense huh?

a human and that word was no and that's how he Aldo started the apes
I'm pretty sure it was.
simianarms
I always thought Ceasar's name was actually Milo. Cornelius and Zira named
him after Milo, the chimp who died in the zoo at the hands of the depressed
gorilla. We never actually hear Armando calling him Milo, but I'd be
willing to bet that that was his childhood name in the circus. I have
always thought he chose Ceasar in the presence of Governor Breck to make
subtle point and then, the name just stuck. Anybody else care to put their
two cents in on this one?

Simian Scrolls Issue 9 will hopefully start shipping in about two to three weeks
time.
The announcement that Ape Chronicles is set to return unfortunately came
too late to be promoted in this latest issue but we wish Terry and Jeff every
success with it and would urge all true ape fans to subscribe.

Yes I know about your site - you have my model Icarus featured on there - my
name is Les Hemstock.
By the way - I now own an amazing Icarus original..I have the very last of
only a few pulls from the now destroyed moulds of the proto type Icarus
designed and cut by Mr Creeber.
Its a bit rough but a great original piece and very valuable.
I hope the site is going well its one of the best out there and certainly
the best Icarus site.
By the way - do you know if the Icarus miniature hanging at Floridas Planet
Hollywood Restaraunt is the original miniature used in the movies sinking
scenes - or a replica?
I also heard Bob Burns owns the original - any chnace of clearing this up as
Id love to know?
Thanks James
Best wishes
Les.

.html The great "Twilight Zone' TV show is coming to DVD. Actually, it's been released before (every episode?) but in a scattershot manner. Now it's being released in season sets, in order the way it should be. The schedule right now is as such (courtesy www.tvshowsondvd.com ):
Season 1 - - - 12/28/04
Season 2 - - - 3/29/05
Season 3 - - - 6/28/05
Season 4 - - - 10/18/05
Season 5 - - - 12/27/05
What does this have to do with anything? Well, a certain dude named Rod Serling was the main force behind this show and he also slummed as the writer of the original POTA, as well as throwing in his two cents on "Beneath" and the TV show. There were also POTA stars like Roddy McDowell and Natalie Trundy in it. Serling also did "Night Gallery" and Season One of that comes out Aug. 24 (Roddy is in one of those eps too). Those who already have TZ on DVD and feel like they're in the twilight zone themselves, you're not alone. The original "Star Trek" also had a scattershot DVD release and now is being released season by season. I guess multiple releases is par for the course for sci-fi classics. POTA fans also know what it's like to rebuy DVDs.
"Picture a fan who buys a DVD and then the next time he goes into the store, he sees the same DVD in a new package. He knows he has that...but he doesn't. So he buys it. And then the next time it's new yet again. And again. Our fan will continue to buy the same DVD until the day he dies. He's just crossed over into the Business Zone".

Will, My award winning suggestion for this discrepancy (it bagged me a
Medicom Greatest Ape!) was that Caesar may have only been known by that
name privately - and that on his papers, the ones that are shown to the guards
at the heliport and to Kolp and Breck - PERHAPS there was another name, a
public or stage name like "MARVELO the performing chimp".
He was the top act for Armando's circus so maybe Breck was looking for
'Marvelo - the performing chimp' and not Caeser?
feeble but possible.

.html Since Ansanaut is here I thought I would bring up one of my pet
theories about Taylor's Spacecraft. (And please forgive me all those
that have heard this before.)
Much has been made that the ship in which C&Z landed in LA was
shorter than Taylor's ship seen in Planet.
It has always been my pet theories that the ANSA spacecraft were
multi-stage vehicles like real NASA ships of the period.
If you look at Brent's ship in Beneath it is even longer than the
portion of Taylor's ship seen in Planet.
Thus, each ship had a landing stage (destroyed on Brent's ship and
underwater on Taylor's) which would then act as a launch platform
for the re-launch stage (the tail end seen partially intact on both
Taylor's & Brent's ships) and finally the re-entry capsule (which is
what C&Z splashed down in).
Does it make any sense? I'm curious to know what Ansanaut or anyone
else thinks about this. <.html

I've wondered that, too. I had the impression for some reason that
they claimed it was the original, but I don't know if it is or not.
Still cool, either way (as is the giant Alien Queen hanging there).
