James,

I've felt very much the same thing...You can definitely see the tail
structure in Brent's wreckage...

Will, My award winning suggestion for this discrepancy (it bagged me a
Medicom Greatest Ape!) was that Caesar may have only been known by that
name privately - and that on his papers, the ones that are shown to the
guards
at the heliport and to Kolp and Breck - PERHAPS there was another name, a
public or stage name like "MARVELO the performing chimp".

He was the top act for Armando's circus so maybe Breck was looking for
'Marvelo - the performing chimp' and not Caeser?

feeble but possible.

Dave B

Makes sense to me! Good job winning the Greatest Ape!

Will

Am I correct to assume that MARVELO was a homage to Marvel Comics?

Smugster sent us these results from a recent PotaDG poll, do you
agree:

"fill in the blanks" Stories that deal with the gaps in existing
continuity. That deal with established characters and situations but
try not to `upset' anything already laid down. (For example Marvel's
bridge between Conquest and Battle) 11 39.29%

"meanwhile not so far away" Stories that deal with NEW characters but
work within a well established framework (For example Beware the
beast) 12 42.86%

What if - Alternate universe stories that use existing characters and
situations but asks what if? (For example What if Jonesy had lived?
What if the Alpha Omega bomb had been a dud?) 3 10.71%

Here's a Hawaiin article on Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who played one of the coolest characters in Tim Burton's POTA, Krull, on his new action series this Fall, HAWAII. APES is mentioned in the article as one of his credits.

Thanks for sharing that Poll result Dave! It is good to see that
the groups are now happily sharing all their resources and paving a
road to peace.

I think that poll refers to the licensed comics that Dave, Neil and
I (and now Chris Lawless, Rich Handley and Gary Challoner) are doing
for publication.

I, personally, think you guys are in for a lot of hard times if you
go down the same road. I think what you need is strips
like "Veetus" - hilarioius 3-frame strips that can be knocked out in
a day. Dave and Neil will tell you that to get anything like Beware
the Beast together, you will probably suffer great unforseen
setbacks. So I would stronly suggest - if you want to succeed (and
if you don't, you are going to look REALLY silly!), you start small.

The other tragedy would be if you start something intended to go 3
frames weekly and it ends up (for whatever reasons) in the can
before completion....then you'll be helping us to relive an
experience like the "conclusion" of the TV Show....."Lack of Closure
on the Planet of the Apes".

Dave, Neil, I'll bet you two have PLENTY to say on this!

Michael

Would doing the comic monthly be easier to accomplish? I like the idea of the
comic being in the original universe with the creation of new characters like
BTB. I could submit story ideas. Elaine

Tonight seems to be the night for annoucements.

A new page has been added to the Internal Website in the Art & Info
section for downloads.

There you'll be able to download custom DVD covers for the original
films (based on their One Sheets), Wallpapers, some of the sound
clips used on the site and two rare MP3s of the Main Title and
Shopping themes from Escape.

And just a reminder, all pics and videos featured on the site are
free to be copied by anyone. Just right click on it and select "Save
Target As". (Mac users it's either Control+click or Shift+click.)

Enjoy.

Hi Dan,
It's nice to be back on the Planet of the Apes! I feel like quoting
Taylor's soliloquy from the beginning of PA68, but I'll refrain!

Thanks for the article on Tagawa. It was great to see the photos of
him now as well. Tagawa carried himself well as Krull, the noble
warrior silverback. I'm glad that my first post back on this group
after a long hiatus is on the subject of PA01. It is hard to
generate much interest in that ape world among POTA fans, and you
have to search hard for the good bits. I hope to find some readers
here of the POTA novels based on the 2001 movie. Those novels placed
some meat on Tim Burton's movie's meager bones, and are worth a try.
I recently read through "Leo's Logbook: A Captain's Days in

much more out of it the second time around.

Now you've gone and done it, David...Opened a can of worms...=)

POTA2001 wasn't necessarily a "bad" movie...For me, though -- I luv
the classic five and the TV series, and I can accept the animated
series -- but, POTA2001 was a "reimagining" and I wasn't too happy
with where it went (or didn't went)...
The "ape" actors were superb to a "T", and the make-up and music were
beyond reproach, to me...But, I did not care for any of the "human"
actors, and I feel both leads were badly cast...

As for the books, "The Fall" and "Colony", though they were fine
science fiction, they didn't inspire me the way the classic and TV
novels do...

BTW, does anyone know if Quick is going to write the end of the
trilogy?...

Hi Glen,
You're quite right. The acting was poor, mostly due to the flat
script as well as some poor casting. No character development, and
no reason to care whether the lead roles lived or died. That's a
recipe for a bad movie. There's no doubt that PA01 was a squandered
opportunity to revisit the Apes saga. I like The Fall a lot, but I
agree that I engaged with it more as a good SF novel than a POTA
book. The Fall was a great SF horror story, and lots of spine-
tingling suspence. Colony is a weird book. I honestly don't know
what to make of it, but I do find the story compelling to read. My
dilemma with Colony is that there are no likeable characters. Even
the "hero" of the tale is bad to the bone.

I gather that Harper Collins has absolutely no intention of
completing the POTA novels that it commissioned. They cancelled
books 3 and 4 of the novella series before they came to fruition. I
have tried to contact both of the advertised authors (Bright and
Whitman) about whether they had actually written the two remaining
books prior to their cancellation, but I had no luck in either case.
The two remaining books had titles and ISBNs that were advertised
for purchase.

I avoided this movie like the plague until it was on FX a few weeks
ago and I couldn't help myself (the whole staring-at-the-car-wreck
thing).

I expected to like the ape actors, but mostly, I didn't. Tim Roth
looked great in the previews, but his guttural, pissed-off mumbling
got old after the first few minutes. Did this guy have *any* emotion
other than pure, seething anger? Not as Roth portrayed him.

And I expected Michael Clarke Duncan to be great, but the dentures he
wore (and the ridiculous lines he had to say) ruined that too.

I won't even talk about what's-his-face the Orangutan (Paul Giacomi?)
and the stupid ape chicks.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was the only ape that I thought did well.

They actually were going to write TWO more?...I didn't think there
was room in the story for two more...Wasn't Charleton Heston's Zaius
the Zaius of "Colony"?...

I wonder if that wasn't more the writing and directing...

Yes, he did stutter and spit...Again, the writing and directing,

Comedy relief!...Again the writing and directing cheapened the film...

The first ones that come to mind are:

1) Shock of the first time Leo sees Thade and Attar - "This one
looked at me."

2) The Thade's father scene where the mystery of CALIMA is revealed
to him.

3) The aerial view of Ape City as they leave for the battle at
CALIMA. Very cool.

Really?...How did you figure that out?...That's one of my problems

The Fall and Colony all take place in the first and second ape
generations. By the time of Thade and the gang, the common lore is
that the ape world is 850 years old (if I recall correctly). Young
Ari discovers that the ape society is actually much younger. So, it
would seem that they managed to tame the dinosaur planet in a span
of only a few hundred years. In that time, the humans of the Oberon
developed into two tribes: the Teks and the Wildings, the former
trying to retain as much of their settled past as possible, and the
latter having taken to a nomadic wilderness existence. Daena is from
the Tek clan, her mother having been the chief.

True, the poll was originally for my own benefit but I think the results are
equally helpful to any who want to try thier hand at producing thier own

My advice would be to 'reach for the stars' - just be realistic. My favourite
comic book writer, Alan Moore wrote three page stories long before he wrote
'Watchmen' I found some very helpful tips here under 'submissions'.

Hi Dan,
It's nice to be back on the Planet of the Apes!

I recently read through "Leo's Logbook: A Captain's Days in
Captivity", and am just starting to re-read Colony. I am getting
much more out of it the second time around.

Hi Glen,
I think I know what's going on. We're talking different novels!
There were five PA01 tie-in novels:
1) POTA, movie novelization, W. Quick
2) POTA: The Fall, W. Quick
3) POTA: Colony, W. Quick
4) POTA: Force, John Whitman
5) POTA: Resistance, John Whitman

All five were published by Harper Collins, but the last two were
done through their "junior novel" series. They were about 100 pp.
each, and illustrated with nifty graphics, and trading cards. John
Whitman also writes similar series of novellas for Harper's Star War
series. They are a must have. They are readily available on
Amazon.com. In Toronto, I have found them in those giant bookseller
overstock places. It looks like no one bought these books, so they
are not hard to get. Force and Resisitance take place 12 years
before Leo Davidson's crash, and give you histories of all of the
major characters, and a lot of insight into ape society. As far as
the stories go, they reminded much of the POTA tv series. I would
love to have seen these filmed.

You got it right, Dan. The Krull action figure from Hasbro is great.
The pose is impressive, and the head sculpt is quite nice. For me,
though, nobody beats the Pericles action figure set, replete with
ape-o-naut and exploration pod. Amazing!

First, let me thank everyone who offered advice/services…
Okay, this is where we stand, so far…:

The majority of fans seem to want to keep with the established,
classic Apes Planet, but deal with NEW characters within that
framework.

Monthly and bi-monthly have been suggested. At any rate, something
regularly published.

A "strip" format of three to four panels has been suggested. Also, a
six panel, one page comic. Less panels means it comes out more
frequently. I think an ongoing episodic piece would be most flexible.

I have had two artists offer their talents to us. What I'd like to
do is have two pencil artists and one inker. That way there is a
consistency with the artwork.

Elaine has offered storylines to us. So I would like to ask at this
time, for her to please send me a couple of ideas that she has that
would fit into the above guidelines. Thanks, in advance.

Okay, so that's it for now. Please let us know what you want from
the above guidelines, and what you're able/willing to contribute.

Thanks to all.

I voted for a sixth sequel, even though I know how highly unlikely
that is. I wouldn't seeing a sixth sequel that also ties in the TV
series. Maybe Burke and Virdon were sent into the future on purpose
to prevent the destruction of Earth or C&Z's launch and only Jones
new about the secret mission. Opps!

I voted for a movie faithful to Boulle's novel. I just think it
ought to be done. Boulle's story is where it all started, and at
some point, a filmmaker will end up going back to the beginning to
get a fresh story. But I really don't see the original story being a
major picture. Public broadcasting like the BBC or PBS might do a
good job. But my preference would be to see a French filmmaker take
a stab at it.

Subject: Re: [Planet of the Apes] Re: New poll for pota

It appears I'm the first to vote for an all-new story. My thinking is that it's possible to do a new take on the basic story (explorers from today are thrust into a future where man has fallen and apes have risen to rule over them) but use modern themes (biological warfare played a part in man's downfall rather than nuclear warfare). I also don't think it should be a new movie, but instead a TV series where characters can be developed more. Actually, I think it should be a new animated series, with apes drawn to closely match the classic Chambers make-up style.

My second choice would be to do a sequel to the 2001 film, but to do it right you have to recognize that Leo Davidson is not the hero but the villain of the story. His reckless and selfish behavior caused not only the deaths of his shipmates but also led to the subjugation of all humanity on Earth (or at least in Washington D.C.). The film should start with the simplest explanation for the end of the first film, and then human rebels 'rescue' Leo from the apes and proceed to put him on trial for crimes against humanity.

I'm not sure a faithful adaption of Boulle's book would translate well to film, as there's a lot of talking and very little action. I liked the idea of an illustrated edition of the book that Mike, Dave and Neil floated a few months back. An audio adaptation, done in the style of a radio play, would also be a good idea.

Since Roddy McDowall and Mark Lenard are no longer with us, I don't think a satisfying filmed conclusion to the TV series can be made. I'd prefer a new series set some 20 or so years after the old one where an older Alan Virdon (or a nameless character who might or might not be Alan Virdon) is a recurring character.

I found a rather nice scan of the cover from Bill Quick's COLONY.

It's a little small - but text free.

I've uploaded it to the file section (colony.jpg) but I'm sure the moderators can
find it a more suitable home.

Why thank you Dave. You're always so generous. And for those that
don't know Dave is the writer of the comic Beware the Beast. The
final chapter will be appearing on Hunter's site
http://www.goatley.com/pota/ any day now.

Of course you could also add Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner, Spike
Lee, John McTiernan, Wolfgang Petersen, Stephen Sommers, Rob Reiner,
Ron Howard, etc. to the list. Everyone will have their pet favorite.

But of the list Glen presented, I would pick Peter Jackson. He's a
big fan of POTA and did a great job with "The Lord of the Rings".
Will being looking forward to his remake of 'King Kong'.

Speaking of 'King Kong' does anyone know what actor from the
original 'King Kong' appeared with what actor from the orignal POTA
(and one sequel) in what film? (Remember this is an exhibition not a
competition, no wagering please.)

My point is no matter how many you include on a list like that
someone is always going to come along and want someone else added to

Of course let's not forget Quentin Tarantino. Imagine the POTA film
that he'd make. Imagine how violent Conquest would have been if he
made it.

Breck: "Talk Caesar or I'll get medieval on your hairy ape ass!"
