.htmlBack 'atcha, Dave! Thanks for finding that interview info, the subjects of the program aren't listed in my guide, so I'll be checking it out for sure. PLANET is airing on TVO as we speak, surprisingly in letterbox.
Do you remember MAGIC SHADOWS with Elwy Yost, Dave? Did they ever do PLANET on that show? I don't ever remember seeing it there. (MAGIC SHADOWS was a TVO program that ran for years when I was growing up. It aired every weekday at 7:30pm for 1/2 hour and over the course of Monday-Thursday they would air a movie in 4 parts along with interesting commentary from host Yost.)

Thanks for the prompt, Dan. I just checked out the TV Ontario
website (www.tvo.org) and they are playing the same double bill that
they did earlier this year: POTA at 8 p.m. followed at 10:10 by
Gorillas in the Mist.
They are also playing the interviews with the directors of both
films: Fraklin Shaffner, and Michael Apted, at 9:55 repeating at
12:20 a.m. EDT.

++ Doubt it. Not financially viable or relevant to Joe Public.
PLANET OF THE APES has iconic status in cinema history. To most
people the sequels are like: "Yeah -- but what were they called?"

+++ Yeah, I know it's intensely boring to cut and paste from IMDB,
but I have such incredible respect for Franklin Schaffner that I had
to do SOMETHING:
One of the best of TV's "Golden Age" directors, Schaffner brought
intelligence and visual sweep to many of his films. The son of
American missionaries, Schaffner began his directing career on
TV's "March of Time," then worked at CBS News before moving on to
live drama. He won Emmys for "Twelve Angry Men" (1954), "The Caine
Mutiny CourtMartial" (1955), and "The Defenders" (a filmed series in
1961-62), and a special award for Jacqueline Kennedy's "Tour of the
White House" (1962). Schaffner's first feature, The Stripper (1963),
was a minor debut but he made a big impression with The Best Man
(1964), a biting (and completely convincing) political drama adapted
from Gore Vidal's play. Schaffner hit his stride with the enormously
popular Planet of the Apes (1968), a wholly credible and
entertaining sci-fi film that revealed the director's eye for
dramatic wide-screen composition. His next film, Patton (1970), is
one of the screen's great biographies, maintaining enormous sweep
while never losing sight of its subject (brilliantly portrayed by
George C. Scott); the film won seven Oscars, including one for
Schaffner as Best Director. Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) and
Papillon (1973) were handsomely produced and executed, but they were
not received as well as his previous hits.
+++ I tip my hat to you, Mr. Schaffner. Modern times dictate that
we will probably never see the likes of you again.
Thanks for "that movie".

Hi Dan,
Family visit yesterday, so I missed most of the Apes night on TVO. I
caught the end of Gorillas in the Mist when I got home. I remember
Magic Shadows well, and can still remember the theme song! I grew
with Elwy Yost and his movies. For those not from Canada, Elwy Yost
was a film commentator with a weekly show. His son Graham Yost wrote
the film "Speed". I don't remember Elwy playing POTA on the
serialized Magic Shadows programs, but I think he did Mighty Joe
Young and King Kong for Magic Shadows. I was first introduced to
those films by the TVO network. My ape fascination probably began
there and grew to ape-mania once the POTA movies played on the US
stations.

.html I just saw the INTERVIEW program that followed last night's POTA '68 airing on TVO here in Canada. It's a neat little 5 minute piece that not only talks with Schaffner, but Bradford Dillman, Charlton Heston, James Whitmore and Roddy McDowall. You can hear Elwy Yost interviewing some of them. They show brief clips from the films including POTA2001 (the Heston interview clips were from 2001). But the program ended with a clip from Burton's movie and the words "There are no plans for further Planet Of The Apes movies." I don't like the sound of those bananas!

Elwy was great at discussing the films, would've liked to hear his comments on POTA. If you watch the INTERVIEW show from last night's TVO, you can tell Elwy was interviewing Schaffner.

his phone number for an interview, but I neglected to call him back. I've

Nor is the lady Linda Harrison. In fact she reminded me of another Linda,
Linda Hamilton from "Terminator" (it's not her either). But that Serta

Well, I have to agree that it is the #1 twist ending. The ending of CITIZEN
KANE wasn't really a twist but a revelation. "Entertainment Weakly" is always
making lists.

.html Along with the release of George Lucas' "Star Wars" movies on DVD this month, Lucas is also releasing his first feature film, "THX 1138", in a brand new director's cut. This film featured Don Pedro Colley (Ongoro, one of the mutants in "Beneath") and was released in 1971 (a year after "Beneath"). It's slated for a limited run in theatres on Sept. 10 and a DVD release on Sept. 14 (available in a movie only edition or a 2-disc special edition). And it's a sci-fi film, dealing with a repressive underground society (like "Beneath") and is considered a classic of it's time (some find it Lucas' best, others find it boring). It also had music by Lalo Schifrin, a couple years before he did the theme for the POTA TV show. In any case, George Lucas fans will find happiness this month. - - - Jeff

It was called THE DECEPTION. I also watched THE TRAP. At about 17 minutes,
when Virdon is trying to get away from a gorilla, there's a little bit of
music that sounds like the beginning of Goldsmith's "New Identity" cue from
PLANET, but it's not exactly the same. Other than that I couldn't hear any music
from the movies.

That cue sounds a little like the music during the opening of the
trial scene and then again when Taylor is led outside to see Landon
with the bump on his head, but I think it's coincidence.

+++ And that, unfortunately, continues a new chapter chronicling the
end of old Hollywood.
Goldsmith, Rosenman, Bernstein and Schifrin. Bless 'em all.
Who replaces them?
"Greats" like Hans Zimmer who, every time he gets the gig on a new
movie, pulls out a dozen DAT tapes from his huge personal
collection, stuffs them into his computer, remixes the whole thing
in half a day, and ships it out.
A sausage factory. Turn the handle and another one pops out.
And "oh yes, that'll be a million dollars please!"
Man, I hate Hans Zimmer almost as much as I hate James Horner.
An example: Music composer credits on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325980/fullcredits#writers
Scroll down to see how many "composers" had to create the score for
this film. That's not musical composition. That's a sweatshop.
Plastic, plastic, plastic. Every Bruckheimer film has music that
sounds EXACTLY the same, regardless of theme or director or, even
more amazingly, composer.
Is there any way we could use cloning technology to bring the old
boys back? At least they knew how to conduct.

.html Hello everyone! Kassidy here. The sales of Scrolls will proceed exactly as last time if you are within the US and Canada. I take payment up front, as opposed to sales in the UK- reason being that I have to pay out for your shipping from my own pocket, otherwise.
John Roche is sending out the magazines to me shortly, so I don't have them just yet, but if you want to go ahead and get the money to me that's fine. Just understand that I don't yet have them in my possession so you won't receive it right away.
I mail Scrolls out once a week as I receive payment.
So if you live in the US or Canada and wish to receive Scrolls #9, you need to send cash (wrap it up some way and please remember I won't be responsible for funds lost in the mail) or check, payable to Valerie Williams Parish.
Send it to:
Valerie Wms. Parish
1501 Chicago Ave.
Knoxville, TN 37917
USA
I'll announce when I receive the magazines from John Roche.
Oh, and I have a few pre-pays already, and I have record of them. No worries, I gotcha covered.

.htmlI'd thought I'd let everyone know that there are some new videos on
the Internal Website based on this poll:
POLL QUESTION: What are the Greatest Moments from
POTA2001? (Vote for 3)
CHOICES AND RESULTS
- Leo's Crash Landing, 4 votes, 8.00%
- The Hunt, 3 votes, 6.00%
- The Dinner Party, 7 votes, 14.00%
- The Escape from Ape City, 4 votes, 8.00%
- Thade and his Father, 7 votes, 14.00%
- Discovering Calima, 3 votes, 6.00%
- The Battle, 5 votes, 10.00%
- Pericles' Landing, 5 votes, 10.00%
- Thade is Trapped, 7 votes, 14.00%
- Leo goes Home?, 5 votes, 10.00%
Unfortunately, due to some technical difficulties (namely the pop-up
interviews on the Special Edition DVD), "The Dinner Party" could not
be included. "Pericles' Landing" was substituted in its place.
The new Videos can be seen by going to the 'Greatest Moments' page
in the Videos section of the internal website.
Also, on the 'TV Ads' page of the 'Art & Info' section there are now
ads from Escape & Conquest's first network runs.
The internal website can be accessed by clicking the link on the
Yahoo Home Page or directly via this link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/MainPage.htm
For members that have not visited the Internal Website, not only are
there rare videos (like Roddy's duet with Carol Burnett in Ape make-
up) but there are high quality scans of all the original One Sheets
& Lobby Cards, an extensive gallery of Marvel Comic covers, an
interactive Timeline which includes the TV Series, scans of the 1968

| Subject: 30th Anniversary TV series Contest |
.htmlAs most know, tomorrow is the 30th Anniversary of the premiere of
the TV series. The POTA and Kassidy Rae have teamed up to celebrate
the anniversary with a 14 week contest.
Each Monday a clip from the episode that aired that date in 1974
will be posted on Kassidy's TV series website
http://planetoftheapestv.150m.com/ . Just watch the clip and then
answer the posted questions about it. It's that simple. The person
who gets the most correct or the first to get all correct will be
that week's winner. The weekly prize will include a free copy of Ape
Chronicles, Terry Hoknes excellent fanzine.
There will also be a Grand Prize awarded to the person who answers
the most questions correctly over the course of the 14 weeks. The
Grand Prize will be a set of the "Return to the Planet of the Apes"
cartoon DVDs and the original 1974 Fall Preview TV Guide magazine--a
blast from the past!
Every Monday posting the new clip, questions and the weekly prize
will be announced here. The winner and the correct answers from the
previous week will also be annouced. Weekly winners as well as
culmative standings will be tracked in the Group's Database section
starting next week.
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/database FYI it is not
required to enter every week to qualify for the Grand Prize but it
is highly recommended.
Full instructions and contest rules can be viewed here:

andRules.doc
So come back tomorrow for the annoucement of the first clip and
weekly prize and Good Luck everyone. <.html

.html As part of the celebration of the TV Series, I wonder what everyone
else thinks about the 'episode 15' script, 'Hostage'.This is the only
unused script that is very much a TV Series story as we know it and I
really like it a lot.I treat it as part of the tv series canon and it
would be interesting to know what everybody else thinks. The
Burke/Kovac part in particular is really strong.Don't be put off by
the Kovac/Ursus names--those were still in some of the filmed
scripts! Also, I have a real passion for the publicity/behind the
scenes pics of the tv series.Things like the spread in issue #4 of
the Marvel mag.It would be a worthwhile project to have an archivist
to gather all of these pics, including the stuff that pops up on
ebay, as there is a lot we can piece together from this stuff.I'm too
incompetent to do it, otherwise I already would be, but I think it is
worth thinking about.I watched 'Escape from Tomorrow' on Sunday( the
series originally aired on Sundays in the UK, so it's more nostalgic
for me to do the anniversary viewing on Sundays!)and more overriding
impression was just how good this episode still is as an excellent
scene setter---five well etablished, interesting ongoing characters in
50 minutes. And the 'look' of the series is still the most stylish
and 'real' of any series of it's type. But maybe I'm biased! John,

It really is an excellent script and shows the series true potential
if it had not been canceled.

.htmlI'm a day late on this but what the heck.
I remember this day very clearly. It was a Friday, end of the first
full week of school. That summer had really been a POTA summer. The
Go Ape Festival ran in July and in August I saw the first issues of
Marvel's POTA magazine.
I was really excited that there would be a new POTA adventure on TV
every week. And I liked that it was on Friday when I didn't have to
worry about getting my homework done first.
The only bad thing was a friend of mine told me he wasn't going to
watch because he wanted to see 'Chico and the Man'. An unfortunate
foreshadowing of things to come.
That night I counted the minutes until 8PM when the show came on and
loved it. Escape from Tomorrow was my favorite episode of the TV
series. All the main characters are well defined and each has their
own moment in the episode. It is also the episode that most reminds
me of the original movie. The trial scene in particular evoked
memories of Taylor's trial. (This scene can be viewed on the
internal website.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/MainPage.htm
Just go the 'Greatest Moments' page of the Videos section.
The only thing that bothered me was the dog in the first scene. But
that is just a minor complaint.
I invite everyone to share their reminisces of their first exposure
to the TV series.
PS Tonight is the 31st Anniversary of Planet's Network TV premiere.
The film earned a 60 share that night. (That's 60% of all people
watching TV.) And it is because Planet did so well that the TV
series was created.

.htmlMy memories are pretty much the same...
They released all the movies in the theater throughout the
summer, "Go Ape", the Marvel magazine was released, and the movies
were on local TV in the weeks leading up to the premiere...
I had a few friends that were all excited to see the premiere
episode...It was great for us, because we could get our ape-fix once
a week...
I felt that, although it was definitely POTA, they didn't "find
themselves" until "The Trap"...
My favorite episode was "The Interrogation", partly because of
Wanda...=)

.html Yes, I have read the book but it's been years. Typical Will Self if you've read his other stuff.
Like POTA, it's a great satire on British society, or society in general I should say. It's
about a chimp that thinks he's human. The chimps in this story act exactly like chimps
even though they appear civilized; carrying on with all of a chimpanzee's filthy habits. But
chimps are the norm, even the band Oasis are chimps.
If I recall correctly, there are scenes of the main character watching the POTA movies. <.html

odds with the filmed episodes. These freedom fighting humans seem sharper
and more intelligent, not to mention belligerent, than any encountered on TV.
I think it would have made an excellent opening episode for a second season,
sending the stories off into a different direction.
