.html I agree Dave that a few edges would need to be taken off Hostage for
it to be an episode as we know it.Virdon getting smoochy would
probably have to go,and there are probably too many Apes to
handle. Also, the names 'Black' and 'Decker' could be usefully ditched
in my opinion! I think that some of the humans did have a spark of
fight and intelligence in the series.Dalton in The Gladiators is a
deep thinker and let's not forget the bossman in The
Liberator. There's also a paid assassin in The Tyrant and Arn's
husband in The Legacy was executed as a rebel.Maybe not all of the
fight has been knocked out of humanity.Which makes sense if Urko's
job is to have any justification, I suppose.I think maybe humanity,
between the TV Series and Taylor landing, DID have one final revolt
and got the snot kicked out of it by Urko and co, leading to our
ultimate demise and mute servility.Good thing too, I say. John,
Scrolls. <.html

.html Well I was born in 1976, so my premiere of the TV show wasn't till
the mid 80's when the series was re-run on local television. I
must've been about 10yrs old and I remember getting a brand new VHS
tape to make sure I recorded each episode each week. My favourites
are definitely "Good Seed" and "The Horse Race". I love the series
so much more than the films, cos they concentrated more on ape daily
life. I love the whole 70's rustic feel to the series and will be re-
watching it with that same childhood feelgood factor. <.html

pota group:
Was the inclusion of the dog and the
picture of New York City in 'Escape
from Tomorrow':
o A sloppy continuity error by the TV series producers.
o An attempt to let the audience know that the TV show was a different POTA universe than the Movies.

.htmlIn the 'Friends and Fugitives' group
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/friends_and_fugitives/ there
has been some discussion as to whether the dog seen in 'Escape from
Tomorrow & the picture of NYC were a continuity error or an attempt
to seperate the TV series from the movies.
I created a poll to see what most members feel about this.
I personally think it was a combination of both. However, it was a
convention in those days that TV series based on movies were not
sequels. The series 'The Odd Couple' ignores the ending of the
movie/play. Even personal details about Oscar and Felix are
different. In the movie Felix was a TV news writer & his ex-wife is
named Frances and Oscar had kids. In the TV series Felix was a
Commercial Photographer (portraits a specialty) & his ex-wife was
named Gloria and Oscar had no children.
The same is true of 'MASH' where the film ended with the Korean War
ending. And the series based on 'Logan's Run' in which the pilot
retold the first half of the movie.
My personal opinion was that the TV series producers were playing
things fast and loose trying to have it both ways. They placed the
series on the West Coast, away from the action of most of the films,
and in a time frame, 3085, that was also away from the time period
of the films. That left them with a certain amount of freedom but
also allowed them to tie into the films somewhere down the road if
need be. That's just my opinion. What does everyone else think?

.htmlI recall reading somewhere, and I don't remember where, that part of the
universe for POTA TV was created the way it was because they felt it
would be boring to have mute humans, and the mutants were too much
for a television audience in those days...So, they had to move back
in time, somewhere before the beginning of POTA and after the ending
of BFTPOTA...That way humans could talk and they still lived "with"
the apes, but they would be servants/slaves...

Yeah, that and the fact that perhaps and quite probably no one working on TV
show knew the movies in every detail. McDowall probably paid attention to
nothing more than his little bit of it, so that's that. We're free of course to
just ignore the dog stuff in the TV show.

.htmlThe dog can be ignored. It can also be explained by assuming the
Apes breed them from other canine species. Since they had a 1000
years to do it, it might be possible.

.htmlTrue, the TV series, maybe due to cost, focused more on humans than
on the Apes. Their mistake was that the success of the films was due
to the audiences interest in the Apes and their culture.

This film is absolutely brilliant in every respect. Heston is great in the
lead, and I don't see why everybody bashes him. The concept is great, the ending
is great, and it's easily in my top three films of all time. Also, anybody
who says the newer Planet of the Apes is better should be shot because Tim
Burton absolutely killed this classic.
Don't anybody say POTA 2001 was better, okay? Not even Landon after the

I'm sure I've read someone also saying that mute humans would also have
seriously lessened any chance of getting half-decent guest stars for any
human roles.
Isn't another dog seen later in the series wandering one of the ruined cities?
(The Legacy I think)
The dog is a good topic of discussion but what you inevitably end up with is
yet another example of the flexibility of POTA. It can be made to mean what
ever the individual wants it to. Now if THAT was the producers intention then
that's pretty impressive.

Do you think there was such a guide? I know it's the norm now
(the bible) and I know that Serling suggested some guidlines
early in pre production but how specific do you think - if it existed
- it would have been. A luxury bound hardcover or a few hasty
notes scrawled on a used tissue?

I can't imagine that it didn't exist. There was one for Star Trek
that I saw once years ago. So they were done for shows in the 60s.
There would need to be something to tell the writers about the
characters as well as the basic premise of the show. How extensive
it was is anybody's guess. <.html

| Subject: POTA questions - do the movies make sense? |
|
.html Some questions from a POTA fan sent to me:
1) In the first movie, four astronauts are sent into outer space attempting to go into the future. My question is why would NASA spend millions of taxpayers dollars to fund this? What would be the benefit to Earth for this effort? Also, their space ship is not equipped to land and then launch back into space, so anything they discover would stay with them.
2) Also in the first movie, you'd think Taylor would guess he was on Earth, considering the planet had oxygen, oceans, trees, clouds and cornfields. Plus, the apes rode horses, used shotguns, and spoke English. Yet Taylor thinks he's on another planet until the end of the movie.
3) In the sequel, a rescue ship is sent to find Taylor. This ship is similar to the first one: in other words, it too is not equipped to land and blast off again. There is no way it could. So why was it sent? In the 1970's, as now, space ships need HUGE liquid fuel tanks to escape a planet's or moon's gravity.
4) This next point really puzzles me. At the end of movie two, the earth is destroyed by a neutron bomb. At the beginning of the third film, we learn that three of the apes have somehow found Taylor's ship at the bottom of the lake, raised it, cleaned it up, and magically launched it into outer space just as the bomb was destroying the earth. This is all the more amazing since The apes in the first movie didn't even think flight was possible. Now all of a sudden, they're piloting space ships. I enjoyed the 3rd movie a lot, but I really think this is a huge gap in logic.

What does everyone else think?

.htmlThese are tough and legitmate questions that fans have asked for
years. My basic answer is 'dramatic licence' or 'hey they're just
movies'. But below are some more detailed answers. Be aware they are
just my personal opinion so anyone is free to disagree.
--- In pota@yahoogroups.com, "Hoknes" <hoknes@h...> wrote:
> Some questions from a POTA fan sent to me:
>

attempting to go into the future. My question is why would NASA
spend millions of taxpayers dollars to fund this? What would be the
benefit to Earth for this effort? Also, their space ship is not
equipped to land and then launch back into space, so anything they
discover would stay with them.
>
Well this is disputed. Some of Taylor's dialogue indicates that it
was a colonization mission. He does refer to Stewart as the new Eve.
However, Taylor does also comment 'We're here to stay' when the
spaceship sinks. This may indicate that if it hadn't they would have
had the option to leave. Since we never see the whole ship (part is
submerged in the lake), we don't know if it was or wasn't equiped
with a landing & relaunch stage.
As far as traveling into the future, while Taylor was convinced of
this; Landon comments that it was still just a theory. Thus, it is
reasonable to assume that there were two schools of thought in NASA
about that.
> 2) Also in the first movie, you'd think Taylor would guess he was
on Earth, considering the planet had oxygen, oceans, trees, clouds
and cornfields. Plus, the apes rode horses, used shotguns, and spoke
English. Yet Taylor thinks he's on another planet until the end of
the movie.
>
Again, mainly dramatic licence especially the Apes speaking English.
It is Science 'Fiction' after all. And it could be argued that if it
was a colonization mission the ship was programmed to seek out an
Earth type planet with similar conditions, plant and animal life.
> 3) In the sequel, a rescue ship is sent to find Taylor. This
ship is similar to the first one: in other words, it too is not
equipped to land and blast off again. There is no way it could.
So why was it sent? In the 1970's, as now, space ships need HUGE
liquid fuel tanks to escape a planet's or moon's gravity.
>
Here there is a large portion of the ship that is destroyed. That
could have been a landing & relauch stage. And again there is
confusion between science fiction and science fact. The ship could
have been using Nuclear or some other type of fuel.
> 4) This next point really puzzles me. At the end of movie two,
the earth is destroyed by a neutron bomb. At the beginning of the
third film, we learn that three of the apes have somehow found
Taylor's ship at the bottom of the lake, raised it, cleaned it up,
and magically launched it into outer space just as the bomb was
destroying the earth. This is all the more amazing since The apes
in the first movie didn't even think flight was possible. Now all
of a sudden, they're piloting space ships. I enjoyed the 3rd movie
a lot, but I really think this is a huge gap in logic.
>
>
It is a huge gap of logic. The biggest part for me is Milo raising
the ship from the bottom of the lake. Of course it may have been
caught on a sandbar and was partially exposed during a period of low
tide.
Taylor mentions at the beginning of the first film that the
functions of the ship are automated and run by computer. Thus, it
may be possible that Milo found the flight manual or checklist and
figured out how to initial the automated flight controls.
Of course this is sheer speculation on my part. If anyone has a
better theory please speak up. <.html

creative freedom to go in a different direction or to tie in to the
movies depending on how the show evolved. I know if I were doing it,
I would want the same freedom.

It seems to be an odd fetish of fans of movie series and TV shows that there
be this thing called "continuity." Who says that everything must be part of
the same "continuity"? Do the old Frankenstein films? The James Bond movies?
Star Trek fans drive me nuts with their complaints the things in "Enterprise"
don't jibe with TOS. Who cares?
I say just accept each movie or TV episode on its own.

.htmlVery true. While it is fun sometimes to speculate, I'm not one
myself to lose sleep over why the ship in Escape was shorter than
the ship in Planet.
Back in the '60s & '70s there seemed to be little concern about
continuity in movie & TV series. I image the producers never thought
audiences would worry about such things. If you go back and look
over the TV series MASH, there are literally dozens of errors in
regard to the characters personal & family backgrounds. I believe at
one point both Hawkeye's parents were alive, dead, resurrected, dead
again, etc.
In the Apes films, I imagine the producers thought the audiences
would not remember details from the previous film a year or two
before. Unfortunately, getting caught up in the minutia of it
(sometimes semantical minutia) can prevent seeing the larger picture
and the overall message of the films.

.html POLL QUESTION: In the POTA EU novels "The Fall" and "Colony", what
does the name "New Hope" refer to?
Well, the respondents worked hard at this one, but no one got the
right answer! Mind you, it was a tricky one. "New Hope" was answer
(d), "all of the above".
In "The Fall", the human survivors of the Oberon crash set up a
village surrounding the Oberon and dubbed it "New Hope". This was
also their name for their new planet. When Jonathan Benavides came
of age and secretly established his own ape colony, he also called
it "New Hope". So, there were two cities called New Hope, and one
planet. If that doesn't complicate things enough, the original human
city of New Hope was destroyed by Jonathan (Semos) and his ape army,
later to be dubbed "Calima" by Semos himself.

.htmlAs far as rebellious humans in the TV show, let's not forget Mikal in "The
Tyrant", who wants to steal back the grain with Virdon and Burke. It costs
him his life. For me that was one of the biggest shakeups in the show, which
was pretty formulaic. Except for the death of Farrow in the first ep (giving
the required hook of a first episode) I can't think of any "good guy" who
buys the farm. It adds some weight to the episode. There was the terrorist
wannabe in "The Liberator", but he was out for destruction, though his
reasons might be understandable.
As for "Hostage", that was the best of the unused scripts (and I said so,
a decade ago in "Chronicles") and would've made a terrific episode. - - -

>Maybe he did the "bible" for the show.
Forgive me if I'm about to tell you something you already know, but
"Developed by" is usually given to someone who refines a format rather
than initiates it.
As you say, though, what Wilson developed is open to conjecture...
It's noticeable that he doesn't get a credit on APES until half-way
through the series, which suggests that he had to take the situation to
arbitration - but the fact he *did* get a credit shows that he was
significantly responsible for what we saw on screen in terms of the
format. The WGA doesn't hand out credits like that without
justification.
I don't know a great deal about him, other than that he was very active
in 20th Century-Fox's SF efforts during the 1960's.
He was story editor for Irwin Allen's LOST IN SPACE at some point in the
show's history, and was deeply involved in the development of LAND OF
THE GIANTS; he scripted the pilot episode ("The Crash"), plotted the
first thirteen episodes *and* served as story editor for the first half
of the first season.
What is interesting is that even those writers who were members of
Hollwood's more radical community - people who looked upon writing as
art and who had nothing but contempt for Irwin Allen - regarded Wilson
very highly.
Best to all,
Mark. <.html

|
.html Here's a little item I found at FSM.com. It made #29 on a list of the top
100 movie themes.
"PLANET OF THE HUMANS," Escape From The Planet of the Apes - Jerry Goldsmith
(1971) Goldsmith faced an unusual challenge with his score for Escape From the
Planet of the Apes (besides the daunting task of writing a sequel score to
his own Planet of the Apes, not only one of his greatest works but also arguably
the most groundbreaking and influential score of its era). In the original
film, he used serial techniques and offbeat orchestrations to evoke the
alienness of a post-apocalyptic Earth for its time traveling heroes. In Escape, he had
a similar but opposite task -- to portray modern day America as an alien
landscape. Goldsmith's main theme miraculously manages to be goofy and bitchin' at
the same time (the exotically funky orchestrations help), and also serves as
a thrilling piece of action music. The main motif is given a slow, plaintive
rendition at the finale, the rare movie ending that manages to be both tragic
and sequel friendly.

Possible solution... How feasible is it for you to publish a time

Granted, a dog chases Farrow up a tree in Episode 1 but I get
the impression that it hasn't been trained to do that - it's just
following it's instincts, like chasing a squirrel (Indeed the chimp
boy seems dissapointed that it's 'only a human')
Imagine the astronauts not only being chased by gorrillas on

dogs all baying for astro-blood.
Thoughts anyone?

.htmlan interesting thought, ballard.
and it seems that apes and dogs are a plausible pair, when you consider that 'dogs are man's best freind" and apes are genetically about 99% similar (i think).
but then it is hard to imagine dogs turning against mankind.
although dogs are often trained to attack people.
apes on horseback always looks freaky.
i guess dogs would add to that imagery.

I think the Anniversary competition is a great idea -- and incredibly
generous minded of those organising it -- but I have a standard dial-up
and haven't even attempted to view the clips.
Even a short sequence would take a long time to download for me.
I think Dave's recommendation of a reference to the location of the clip
on the DVDs would be an ideal way for those of us without Broadband to
join in.

.htmlHi, Gang.
In regard to recent postings:
>> Imagine the astronauts not only being chased by gorrillas on
>> horseback - but by gorillas on foot leading teams of hunting
>> dogs all baying for astro-blood.
>> Thoughts anyone?
It's a terrifying image - especially for me! I was once attacked by a
dog. I was about eleven years old, just walking down the street, and a
neighbour's vicious animal had escaped from it's pen. It ran towards me,
jumped up, and took a chunk out of my leg. It was "put down" months
later - *after* it had savaged two more kids... But it took me years to
get over it. I used to break into a sweat even if I heard a dog barking
way off in the distance.
Personal associations aside, though, I think this is one of the key
elements in Boulle's concept; transposing the relationship between man
and animal and exposing the barbarity of what we do to the creatures we
share the world with.
I don't know if everyone has read Boulle's novel, but what was the
savage "Great Hunt" in the movie is given a very different slant in the
book; the French novelist gives the scene a more satirical framing;
instead of a brutal, militaristic orgy, the gorilla hunter Boulle's
protagonist encounters - in what is (like Taylor and crew) his first
exposure to the ape civilisation - is dressed like a country gent. It
makes the casual brutality of the human hunt all the more shocking.
As someone living in a country where a group of aristocrats are
currently fighting (pardon the expression) to retain their right to
watch a wild animal being torn apart by dogs - and then to smear
themselves with its blood - this all has added significance.
In answer to Ron's remark:
>apes on horseback always looks freaky.
I think that's what I was responding to when I commented on that scene
from THE GLADIATORS, where we see Jason eating the Oper; just a simple,
everyday act, made by this gorilla in uniform, in a bucolic setting,
with Chamber's makeup and Haack's costuming making it entirely real and
vivid. Magritte would have been impressed, I think!
But: a partnership between ape and dog... a very interesting chain of
thought, Dave - and, again, something I hadn't considered - even though
the possibility of it is, as someone noted, implied in the opening to
ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW.
