.htmlThis week's clip and questions from the episode THE TRAP
are now available for viewing. No more entries for Week 2 will be
permitted.
This week's weekly prize is a copy of Ape Chronicles and a Japanese
POTA Cell Phone Strap. This is a rare item created for the 30th
Anniversary of Beneath. "30th Anniversary" is embossed on the strap
in gold lettering and a small head bust of Ursus (in helmet) is
attached. TV series fans can pretend it is Urko;-)
Week 2's winner is Andy DeMaranville/
theresaandydemaranville@.... Good work Andy.
The current standings for the Grand Prize (and there is currently a
5 way tie for first place which means we've made this week's
questions even harder) as well as the questions and answers from
previous weeks are available in the Database section.

To view this weeks's clip and answer the questions either click the
banner on the Yahoo Home Page

Good Luck everyone! <.html

.htmlI've always felt that they were mid-19th century myself. While they
still use horses, the Apes have photography, pressure hoses and
machine guns plus they seem to be somewhat advanced in the medical
sciences. I also think that they may have had a primative form of
electricity since all the interiors are well lit despite no torches
or lanterns or even candles being visible. Also, a Mid-19th century
technology makes Milo's salvage of Taylor's ship a little more
believable, to me at least.

.htmlI think the basic society of the apes (from the writing point of view) was
ancient Greece and Rome. The clothes, names, statues, etc. suggest this. Any
advances (photography, etc.) can be chalked up to what they inheritted,
either directly or through discoveries, from human civilization. And
Burton's flick was acknowledged by the filmmakers as based on ancient
cultures like Egypt and the pre-empire Romans. Plus Burton wanted an early
Asian/Samarai look as well. - - - Jeff

In terms of the Ape society, government and culture it is very much
Roman & Greek. The names are mostly Roman as is the caste system.
But as far as technological development they do seem to be much
further along. The Romans and Greeks could not perform surgery or
even a blood transfusion. True photography could be a remant of
Human civilization as well as gunpowder. But both take a
sophisticated knowledge of Chemistry to continue to produce. <.html

I didn't mind him getting killed - it just seemed his character was thrown away.
His death held no emotional impact for me at all, just a shrug of the shoulders
and a 'huh! Is that it?"
They were building up the 'vendetta' angle between Krull, Thade and Attar for
most of the movie and IMO the payoff just fell flat.

Yes, I can see that POV. An ape monastary with Orang monks wouldn't look

Around 1975 (Tv series time in UK) The Circus Hoffman toured the Uk with a Planet of the Apes roadshow,
I know this because I ripped a poster from a bus sation wall. They were also in the Mirror newspaper travelling on the London Underground (Urko and two Gorilla Soldiers.) I don't have any of this stuff anymore but I'm certain I did'nt dream it. I remember thinking they were Don Post masks and the costumes looked like the real thing.
I never saw the show but it was on tour across the country.
Thanks for the Medicom info.

The scene that most reviewers pick upon is the 'see no, hear no,
speak no evil' reference in the trial sequence. What do folks here
think? A classic scene in a classic movie or totally unneccesary
and a black stain in an otherwise perfect film?

I'm one of the few here that can vividly recall how PLANET played with
theatre audiences in 1968. All of the visual and verbal puns went over big back
then. People even laughed when Cornelius hissed when Taylor kissed Zira. All
the self-conscious humor in PLANET is there because Frank Schaffner wanted it
there. He didn't take the movie too seriously. It was entertainment.
A perfect PLANET? Nothing is perfect. It is what it is.

In fact, Alf Kjellin who directed that fine episode THE
INTERROGATION grew up directing episodes of GUNSMOKE and THE
VIRGINIAN.
...and Jack Starrett who directed THE HORSE RACE was a
director/actor/editor/second unit man who did pretty much the same

+++It's funny and clever. As you know, Schaffner shot it as a gag --
never intending to keep it for the final cut -- but people just
LIKED it. So it stayed.
It's a cultural reference for those that know to have a chuckle

what's going on in the scene. C&Z are presenting there theory of

the scene as a satire on those who bury their heads in the sand to
ignore science or even basic facts when they go against their

We don't seem to be any closer to an 'Apes 2" but, of all things, Mel Brooks says he's currently writing a sequel to his '80's sci-fi spoof "Spaceballs" (wasn't that a flop?). For a while now, Brooks' name has been mud in the movies, but his career was ratched up a notch by the huge success of his theatre adaptation of his movie 'The Producers" (currently being made as a movie). So I guess he has the clout to get the spaceball rolling. He told the theatre magazine "Playbill" (his comments can be seen at www.aintitcool.com ) that "Spaceballs" was his best filmmaking experience since "Blazing Saddles". Hmm, did he forget about "Young Frankenstein", which was filmed at the Fox lot when the "Apes" TV show was being made? I've read somewhere about Brooks recounting bumping into apes there while makeing the movie. And the Frankenstein castle from the movie
was used as Virdon's prison in "The Legacy".
Anyway, Brooks says he hopes to have the sequel in theatres around the time of the new "Star Wars" flick next summer. And for those who are wondering what this has to do with anything, the original "Spaceballs" has a POTA spoof that seems to be one of the most memorable moments. Perhaps "Apes" will turn up in the sequel? He's writing it right now! Anyone who knows Mel Brooks, go hang out. - - - Jeff

That was just a rumor, no truth to it. Burton in interviews has expressed
absolutely no interest in doing an APES sequel, and the executives at Fox saw
the same movie we did -- they know as well as we do that Burton and APES did fit
well together.
I think we're still in the era of the studio putting distance between
POTA2001 and the moviegoing public. If they have any idea of doing another POTA
they'll want almost everyone who goes to movies to have forgotten the 2001
debacle.
I also think the SPACEBALLS 2 talk is just that -- talk. Who out there
except the most masochistic filmgoer wants another movie like SPACEBALLS?

the great ratings on TV of the original (which he credits to a winter storm

the "stuff". He says the POTA magazine didn't sell well (so why was it

.htmlHi John,
Tim Burton and many of his "Ape" cohorts (including Helena Bonham Carter
and Richard Zanuck) are doing a remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory", starring Johnny Depp. Burton said he wouldn't do an "Apes 2" and
obviously feels burned by the experience, being rushed by Fox, etc. He says
from now on he won't commit to a film that has a release date before the
script is ready and has had a renewed interest in having a good writer
("Chocolate Factory" is written by the same guy who did a good job for him
on "Big Fish").
As for "Apes 2", Richard Zanuck seemed the most interested in carrying on
and "getting the story right". There's been rumors (including from Linda
Harrison) that they are working on a script but no announcements of a movie
that I've heard. Basically Fox rushed it and blew it. The merchandisers got
burned and "Apes" is an expensive proposition. Fox is more interested in the
cheaper, easy to promote franchises like "Garfield". Recent projects
announced by Fox include "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and the toy line "Brats"
(spoiled rich girls). Move along folks, there's nothing to see at
Fox. - - - Jeff

etc. I like because it's so well done. They don't just cut to it, the 3
three apes get into the positions very naturally. It's like they just
happened to be like that, it's not forced. Very well choreographed. - - -

everybody's fave bit of Apes, but as we got replies from creators,
NOBODY turned us down and the whole thing steadily ballooned. I like
how it turned out. I have never understood how the Apes magazine
could be described as anything less than a success.Twenty nine issues
from '74 through to late 76 was a hell of a run, beating the pants
off many other efforts.I think it only ended with a change in policy
re black and white mags.Still, if Roy Thomas does an intro, you don't
mess with it.Incidentally, we have a Ploog interview done for a
future issue.John. <.html

dolls and lunch boxes. Maybe it would be better to see Apes

.htmlWell, money talks and it did turn a profit. Fox knows people didn't like
the movie, so the box office can be credited to interest in POTA, not the
movie itself, including the record $68 million opening weekend. If they
don't realize they're sitting on a potential goldmine (if handled properly)
they really shouldn't have their jobs. Fox has been doing so-so movies that
turn a profit based on cool titles ("I, Robot", "Day After Tomorrow") but
none that hit it out of the ball park. "Hollywood Reporter" says that Fox
was the # 1 studio this summer based on a series of hits but no home runs.
They put out "Garfield", "Alien vs. Predator", the Will Smith sci-fi.
Everything but a movie called "The Kitchen Sink". With all those titles they
could've done better if the movies were good. But they'll never learn. POTA
is better waiting 10 years and maybe the next generation at the studio will
do a better job. - - - Jeff

complained about the filming of the astronauts' trek as a waste of time. He
put his foot down and said he didn't want to see any more footage of dirt.
But Schaffner knew what he was doing. Zanuck admitted he didn't get the
social commentary of the movie (in "Behind the POTA"). Yet he was in charge

Your fan-produced 2nd series of trading cards for the TV series are
amazing! I wish these were available somewhere to I could add them
to my trading card collection. My TV series cards have a special
spot in my collection, since they were the ones I collected when I
was young, and never knew about the ones for the movie till years
later. My only complaint about the TV series cards of 1974 was that
there was little variation in the photos. So many of them could have
been interchangeable, and there were too many generic gorilla-human
fight cards. You've done a much better job than Topps did in the
1970s!

Charlton Heston. Today he is 80 years old. I think we all wish him
well in his battle with Alzheimer's.
I was 6 years old when I saw the original Planet of the Apes and it
made quite an impression on me and Heston was the first big movie
star I really remembered.
I was wondering, other than POTA what is everyone's favorite Heston
film? For me it is "The Agony and the Ecstasy". A historical epic of
the likes Hollywood is incapable of doing anymore. My favorite part
is a montage of the Pope repeatedly asking Michelangelo
(Heston), "When will you make an end of it?" to which Michelangelo
replies "When I am finished!". A reminder that great creativity
doesn't work on deadline. Something the FOX should have remembered
when making the remake.

You've certainly made a much better job than the makers of the originals and
you did this (almost) single handed - there was probably a whole team back
then! The images are perfect, most look like publicity stills and not screen-
grabs. The attention to detail is uncanny, right down to the wrappers. I noticed
a few images of a shirtless Burke, was this a thank you for the efforts of your
proof reader or were you made to include them :0)
Picture the conversation:
Greg: Hey Kass, I have a new set of Topps TV cards ready to go, would you
host them on your site?
Kass: Sorry Greg, I've no time, no space and I really wouldn't want to host
them just in case someone thought they were real and got upset.
Greg: Burke gets his shirt off!
Kass: Well ALL-RIGHTY then!
I've read the story on the backs and enjoyed your clever manipulation of the
TV show formula. Is there a prize for spotting which image belongs to which
episode.

.htmlThere was some discussion between Kass and I as to whether or not we should present these cards as something Topps had prepared but never released back in 1974 and that I had somehow gotten my hands on a set of pre-press proofs, or just come clean from the beginning and admit that they were a brand-new fan-created project. I was hoping to replicate the same thrill I got when reading the 'lost episodes' article in Scrolls, where you're sure it's not true but there's a little part of you that's hoping it is. In the end, we decided to say nothing one way or the other and let people decide for themselves, but you're all too smart for us and figured it out right away.
I'm very glad that people are enjoying the cards, and I want to especially thank Kassidy for not only hosting the card images on her site but for her editorial guidance in their development. I also want to say that while she suggested some alternate images for a few of the cards, it was my own decision to start and end the story with the astronauts being shirtless. It's called knowing your audience.

Thanks for the kind words. Coming from someone who's own fan fiction I greatly admire, I really appreciate that you enjoyed the story. I didn't consider it clever manipulation so much as trying to avoid certain things, such as either Virdon or Burke getting captured by the apes or Urko looking foolish or ineffectual at the end of the story.
There's no prize for guessing which episodes the screen captures came from. I'm not even going to dare people to guess which episodes I used because they're all so sharp-eyed. But I will say that I chose the episodes before I started working on the story, and I'm interested to see if anyone can guess why I chose these particular episodes.

.html I'm glad Greg and Kass have been spared a public flogging over the
trading cards---I was, and occasionally still am, flayed alive over
the 'missing episodes'article in Scrolls and I would hate for that to
happen to nice people.I notice one card shows Burke's nipples but
obscures Virdon's with a caption.I'm sure Kass didn't influence that
in any way.Just a thought, but is there a way of presenting Ron
Harper with his card, as a thanks from Apedom in recognition of the
30th Anniversary? Truly amazing work everyone. John, Scrolls. <.html

especially thank Kassidy for not only hosting the card images on her
site but for her editorial guidance in their development. I also want
to say that while she suggested some alternate images for a few of
the cards, it was my own decision to start and end the story with the
astronauts being shirtless. It's called knowing your audience.>
Greg, it is thanks to friends like you and Dave that I get to feature
such wonderful original works. I'm on the "cutting edge" thanks to
you guys and your talent. You are most definitely welcome.

Greg may be working on something along those lines, you should
contact him, Mr. Scrolls ;) <.html

.htmlI've reread that "lost episodes" article a few times myself. It would be great if they were somehow "brought to life"!

.html Seeing the missing episodes article given the Greg treatment would be
awesome, but that is one hell of a job. I haven't bothered people
with this before, but I did have some SERIOUSLY pissed off people
accusing me of betraying their trust and making fools of them over
the lost episodes article, because they accepted it as true. What I'm
wondering is if anybody would be interested in
Gregifying 'Hostage'.There might be enough images out there to do
something like those Star Trek photo novels. It would also give life
to a really great unproduced episode.John, Scrolls.PS,thanks for the
kind words about Paul Rowe's lost episodes article. The people who did
the photo mock ups know who they are and are in hiding! <.html

.htmlJohn,
I for one loved the missing episodes article. I thought is was a
real hoot and kept thinking if only, if only. I still can't believe
some people took it seriously but then I never believe anything I
read.
As for Greg's cards, they are terrific. I hope these are the first
of a full set. Then a set for Return and each of the movies, etc.,
etc., etc.

It is a full set. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the 'next page' link. See? More cards on the next page. Keep going and you'll see the whole set of 66. :)

Anything's possible, of course. One of the things I'd considered doing is a set that just focused on the first episode of the series done in the style of the original 'green back' movie cards. And I'd be lying if I said the thought of doing sets that extended the original movie set to cover the 4 sequels didn't occur to me. A massive set that covers all of the TV episodes (9 cards per episode plus 5 actor cards plus a checklist card = 132 cards) and a similar set that covers Return (5 cards per episode plus a checklist card = 66 cards) are also possibilities.
Of course, I'd really rather that Rittenhouse get off their butts and do these kinds of sets for us, because they'd have access to the Fox archives and better quality images than I'd be able to create with just screen grabs.

I was talking about this only last night. I think the deciding factor
was *wanting* to believe. That desire, to wish it could only be
true was, in some cases, enough to tip the scales of
acceptance.
