| Subject: Urko's Guard Service In Question |
.htmlXXXXXXX FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE XXXXXXXXXX
In recent days, a one-year gap in Chief of Security Urko's Ape
National Guard service during the height of the Mutant War has been
questioned.
General Ursus even suggested the Chief of Security of shirked his
military duties, when Urko transferred to an Ape City unit.
A spokesman for the Urko campaign accused Ursus of trying
to "perpetuate a completely false and bogus assertion." He
said, "The Chief of Security was never AWOL."
Questions about Urko's Guard service first surfaced four years ago,
when he ran against Councilor Agrippa, a Mutant War veteran. A
review of Urko's military records shows that Urko enjoyed
preferential treatment as the son of a then-Councilor, when he
walked into an Ape Guard unit in Central City and was moved to the
top of a long waiting list.
It was an era when service in the Guard was a coveted assignment,
often associated with efforts to avoid active duty in The Mutant
War. Urko was accepted for Calvary training after having scored only
25 percent on the Calvary aptitude test, the lowest acceptable grade.
MoveApe.Org has examined a one year period and found no record that
Urko performed any Guard duties, either in Ape City or Central,
although he was still enlisted. According to military records
obtained, Urko requested and received permission to be transferred
to the Ape City National Guard. After he was in Ape City, he
received notice from the Guard personnel center that he
was "ineligible" for the Calvary Unit he requested.
Later, Urko was suspended from the Calvary because he failed to
complete an annual medical exam. A month later, Urko requested to be
assigned to a different unit in Ape City and was approved. Although
he was required to attend periodic drills in Ape City, there is no
official record in his file that he did.
According to the records, Urko had been instructed to report to
Macro, an officer in the Ape City unit. "Had he reported in, I would
have had some recall and I do not," Macro, a retired brigadier
general, told MoveApe. "I had been in Central City, done my training
there. If we had a first lieutenant from Central City, I would have
remembered."
Urko's campaign manager said yesterday that although no official
record has been found, "obviously, you don't get an honorable
discharge unless you receive the required points for annual
service." He said Urko "specifically remembers" performing some of
his duties in Ape City. He also provided a news clipping quoting
friends of Urko's from the Ape City saying they recalled Urko
leaving for Guard duty on occasion.
Urko said that he did "show up for drills. I made most monthly
meetings, and when I missed them I made them up."
Reached in Ape City yesterday, Macro stood by his contention that
Urko never reported to him. But Macro added that he could not recall
if he, himself, was on the base much at that time.
When Urko returned to Central City his service is again vague in the
records. His officers at Camp Aldo wrote that Urko could not be
given his annual evaluation, because he "has not been observed" in
Central City for eight months. Ultimately, another officer states in
a subsequent document that a report for that one-year period was
unavailable for "administrative reasons."
The issue of military service has been out front this year with a
decorated veteran, Ursus, in the race.
Ursus said yesterday that he had not decided whether to make Urko's
service an issue in the election. Asked whether he has suggested
that surrogates pursue this line of attack, he said: "I have not
suggested to any of them that they do so, and I spoke out against
the use of the word deserter, which I thought was inappropriate,
wrong and over the top."
MoveApe.Org calls on Chief of Security Urko to release all records
of his military service and answer questions as to his whereabouts
during the period in question.

.html You can understand the use of the word 'men' by Alan or Pete, because that's their frame of reference. Urko calling them men is another story. But then, i've had the same trouble when I write fan fic, forgetting that it would sound really weird to the apes to be called men, especially as they're so 'highly' regarded as a species. Sounds like something that would be used as a curse, actually. You know, Urko to Galen: "You fight like a man," something like that.

Hello Javier, and welcome! I have an admiration for Dr. Zaius as
well, even though he is supposed to be a "bad guy". It's nice to
have a fan from Mexico in the group. There were some fascinating
Spanish-language Apes comics from Argentina that we would love to
have your opinions on. Mexico also seems to have produced some of
its own unofficial Planet of the Apes collectible figures in teh
1970s. Have you seen any of these?

Hi John,
Thge dark Cornelius was a variant of the regular issue Medicom UDF
Cornelius. He is the same, but his green clothing is a very, very
dark green color. The difference is quite noticeable when you
compare the two. I doubt this was an intentional variant. Probably
just a difference in paint lots. Anyone know?
Of the intended variants, there are two "Caesar Land's Ape" figures
from Conquest: an orange-suited gorilla and a green-suited chimp.
There are two Soldier Ape variants: one from Beneath with a machine
gun, the other from Planet with the distinctive wooden-cased rifle.
There are also two Caesar's, one from Conquest in chains, the other
from Battle, similar to Cornelius but with no glyph patches on the
breast.
Those are the ones that I know of. Any others?

How can you? I mean it only lasted half a season, so those characters aren't
"known" to the public at large like the film apes. If the show would have
had the run it should have had, that'd be different, but it was short lived.
Companies are out to make money, and to do that they have to have something
that's going to appeal to the largest group possible... As it is, POTA has a
small audience, and the audience for the TV show is even smaller than the films,
so (almost) no company is going to make figures based on a show that has no
following...

The area with the cage and the lab with the humans was supposed to be across
the small body of water in front of Ape City. Taylor had to cross it to get
to the city. There are stills that show footage of this was shot.
Now.... why when he's trying to escape he'd want to run smack dab into the
center of Ape City I'll never figure out.

Actually that is a deleted scene. Taylor's escape was originally much longer
and even involved Heston jumping in a small pool next to an Ape building. I

You're doing the TV series a massive discredit. The popularity of the TV
series websites; the huge success in foreign markets; the fact that the
Medicoms already included characters from the TV show; the show being
released on DVD; and now in Japan (which, let's remember, is the land from
which these figures came) they are producing a special collectors edition of
the TV series box set. Doesn't sound to me like a show with no following.

You misunderstood me... I didn't mean the show had "no following"... What I
was getting at is that to the public at large the TV series is not really even
known... What I was getting at is that to mainstream buyers here, they'd be
more apt to know who Zira is, but not Galen... They'd see TV series
figures and NOT know who they are, because it's not widely known...

.htmlAs a public service MoveApe.Org sponsored a debate between General
Ursus and Chief of Security Urko. Here now are some important
excerpts:
TITUS (Moderator): General Ursus, the Urko campaign has charged if
you are elected that you will be soft on human terrorists. How do
you respond to that charge?
URSUS: I'm a war hero. I have a plan to stop human terrorists. I
have lots of medals. I served in the Mutant War and was wounded
several times. I'm a war hero. My favorite saying is 'The only good
human is a dead human'. I'm a war hero. I have a plan. I won't let
terrorists like Virdon & Burke get away like Urko has. I'm a war
hero. I have a plan.
TITUS: Rebuttal Chief Urko.
URKO: It's hard work. Catching humans is hard work. I'll catch
Virdon and Burke but it's hard work. Really hard work.
------------------------------------------------
TITUS: Chief Urko, in many of the provinces local official are
allowing Gorilla to marry Chimps or Orangutans. What are your views
on interspecies marriage?
URKO: Relationships are hard work. I believe marriage should be
between a Gorilla and a Gorilla, a Chimp and a Chimp. It's hard work
but that is what has been traditionally defined as marriage. We
should defend that. It's hard work.
TITUS: Rebuttal General Ursus.
URSUS: I'm a war hero. I fought in the Mutant War so Simians could
marry who that want. Chief Urko's daughter is currently dating an
orangutan. There's nothing wrong with that. I have a plan. I'm a war
hero.
------------------------------------------------
TITUS: General Ursus, you support controversial Human Cell medical
research. What do you have to say to opponents of this?
URSUS: I'm a war hero. I have a plan for all simians can benefit
from Human Cell research. I'm a war hero.
TITUS: Rebuttal Chief Urko.
URKO: It's hard work but I agree, cut the human bastards up.
TITUS: Thank you both and good evening.

Issued by the Urko in '04 campaign.
URKO'S WIFE ULTA'S IRATE RESPONSE TO GENERAL URSUS' CHEAP DEBATE
REFERENCE TO HER BELOVED DAUGHTER'S VILE AND REPULSIVE LIFESTYLE
CHOICE
ULTA: Good morning. As everyone knows by now, last night, during the
debate, General Ursus proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is
not a good ape. Specifically, he said that my daughter was a... he
accused her of... he called whatsername a... one of those... um...
Chimp daters. And by making such a cheap and tawdry political
reference to my little girl, he has made me a pretty indignant mom!
Now it is patently obvious what General Ursus is trying to do here.
He knows that all decent, simian voters think of my husband Urko and
me as the very picture of contentment. They see us holding hands and
smiling at political events, and they take a certain comfort in
imagining us together at home me baking cookies and him taking out
the trash.
In short, they see us as normal.
But by saying... that... our daughter
um
dates a Chimp, Ursus is
trying to get voters to conjure another vision of the Urko home. A
sick, twisted tableau of unnatural perversion, in which our
wholesome family gatherings are infiltrated by my daughter's
friends: Chimps, Orangutans and, dare I say, Gibbons.
Indeed, Ursus wants Apes to think that if my husband and I are so
morally bankrupt that we nurtured a... a... ummm... one of those,
that we might have done other things, too. He hopes some voters will
even believe the utterly preposterous like Urko looting the
treasury through no-bid contracts, or me penning a human novel.
Fortunately, Simian are far too smart to fall for those kinds of
ridiculous distortions.
Now all that said, let me be very clear in stating that Urko and I
love our daughter. And we will continue to love her so long the
definition of "love" doesn't include needing to actually say her
name in public or allowing her to stand next to us on stage at a
political convention. And so long as she doesn't actually try to
start a family of her own, her father and I will not disown her.
Fortunately, the one bedrock Gorilla value Urko and I did tried to
instill in our daughter is GREED. Yes, she just can't get enough of
those six-figure salaries we set her up with even when the actual
jobs themselves involve aiding and abetting the legislative
disenfranchisement of her and her so-called friends! And for that,
we are deeply proud.
In closing, I'd like to express my gratitude to the radical right,
to whom my husband and I owe our fame and riches, for their kind
understanding on this matter. And I want to assure them that going
forward, we can still be counted on never to dare vocalize any
position that might deviate from the Sacred Scrolls that holds that
Gorillas who date Chimps or Orangutans are hopeless sinners who
have explicitly chosen to be tortured in Hell by Satan for all
eternity. And yes, that includes our daughter.
I also want to once again express my utter contempt and disgust for
General Ursus for mentioning that non-secret that everyone already
knew anyway. I mean, HOW DARE HE!
I trust that all Apes will find my feigned outrage to be extremely
contagious, and vote appropriately.
Thank you, and good day!

In my favorite episode "The Tyrant", Aborro said that Urko never

In "The Horse Race", Urko cheated so that his horse would win and he
would gain lands and money. Urko has lied many other times like in
the first episode of the tv series when he set Galen up to be killed,

Plus, in the Tyrant episode, Aborro said that Urko cheated at the

You're right, Galen. Urko is full of contradictions. But somehow he
doesn't seem quite so evil as Aboro. Among ape leaders, Urko isn't
quite the sharpest pencil in the pack. I guess that's why our heroes
can outsmart Urko so frequently. While I'd place Aboro closer to
Gen. Thade for his ability to plot and scheme, Urko seems to me to
be closer to Gen. Aldo in his naivety. Anyone agree/disagree?

Hi Mark,
The writers intended the pronunciation /u:rko/ (like Eng. OOR-koh).
I believe it says this on one of the early scripts. Am I right,
experts? You're correct that you hear at least 2 pronunciations for
it. I have a feeling that er-koh is the most common among the cast.

either. Both seemed more driven by their prejudices than their
intellect. However, Aldo was more a schemer, plotting to overthrow
Caesar while Urko was more of a sneak, planning things behind Zaius'
back. Ursus appeared to be the most intelligent and shrewd of the
three Gorillas.

Well, you're pretty much calling Urko stupid and I disagree. The General
didn't get where he was by being stupid he's pretty good at improving himself at

.html.html .htmlAboro is jealous that his "good friends moved up the ladder" while he was "stuck" in his minor position as District Chief... It is a look of jealousy and resentment that he's giving Urko, there are no under-tones of "cheating" on Urko's part. Aboro wants Urko's power and he is so lustful of that power he's willing to kill him to get it... Aboro resents that he was caught, and Urko is his scape-goat...
When Urko says to Aboro about "the old foolishness must be forgotten", that is because Aboro was "promoted" to Prefect, he moved up, so Urko is saying that the past is now forgetten, because Aboro is now "on the way up..." (Urko is under the impression that Aboro really did work his way up, he's not aware of the bribery...)
You also say that it was "suggested" that Urko cheated at the academy... Where do you get this? You use the example of the cheating at horse-racing to back up a case for your thinking he cheated in school? The show was inconsistent in it's writing, and as such, facts were screwed up... While in "The Horserace" Urko had a "win at any cost" attitude (including cheating...) But in "The Tyrant" he was the law abiding ape that Aboro knew at the Academy... (It was a characterization discrepancy on the writers part... ) Besides that, as he grew older, Urko may have changed his ways... He may have started out as a young cadet with a law-abiding attitude, but as he grew older, and more powerful, he may have become personally corrupt later on...

I think in "The Tyrant" it's suggested
that Urko, Aboro and a third gorilla (Bolta?) cheated but only Aboro got caught.
It's implied (to me) that Aboro kept his mouth shut about the others so he
harbored bitterness (apparently Urko didn't use his power to help Aborro) and
Urko seems slightly embarrassed he didn't help his friend. Urko says, "Anyone
could've been caught cheating". That suggests they all did it. - - -

Aboro is jealous that his "good friends moved
up the ladder" while he was "stuck" in his minor position as District Chief...
It is a look of jealousy and resentment that he's giving Urko, there are no
under-tones of "cheating" on Urko's part. Aboro wants Urko's power and he is
so lustful of that power he's willing to kill him to get it... Aboro resents
that he was caught, and Urko is his scape-goat...
When Urko says to
Aboro about "the old foolishness must be forgotten", that is because Aboro was
"promoted" to Prefect, he moved up, so Urko is saying that the past is now
forgetten, because Aboro is now "on the way up..." (Urko is under the
impression that Aboro really did work his way up, he's not aware of the
bribery...)
You also say that it was "suggested" that Urko cheated at
the academy... Where do you get this? You use the example of the cheating at
horse-racing to back up a case for your thinking he cheated in school? The
show was inconsistent in it's writing, and as such, facts were screwed up...
While in "The Horserace" Urko had a "win at any cost" attitude (including
cheating...) But in "The Tyrant" he was the law abiding ape that Aboro knew at
the Academy... (It was a characterization discrepancy on the writers part... )
Besides that, as he grew older, Urko may have changed his ways... He may have
started out as a young cadet with a law-abiding attitude, but as he grew
older, and more powerful, he may have become personally corrupt later
on...

In PLANET the orangutans were supposed to represent "established authority" and so were meant to look closed minded. You really need to read Boulle to understand the ape class system in the first movie.

Interesting. Would he be the easiest to live with? Elaine
I voted for Dr. Zaius as the ape house guest of choice because,
despite his bigotry toward humans, I thought he would be the one
most likely to engage in interesting discussions. One of my favorite
scenes in PA68 was when Taylor and Zaius have a few moments together
in Zaius' study. It is one of the only times in the film when Taylor
seems to be truly among equals: someone who understands him, even if
he hates him.

Well, there wasn't too much interest in this poll, but Star Trek
only slightly nosed forward to beat out Star Wars as POTA fans'
preference for an SF series. Still, with 6 for Trek, and 5 for SW,
it is just about half and half. Interesting that 2 of the voters
liked neither of ST or SW, but feel that POTA stands alone as their
favorite science fiction series of the three. Because Star Trek and
Star Wars are so different from each other, I expected to find POTA
fans tending to prefer one over the other.

While Zaius would provide interesting, stimulating conversation, he is never going to change.
Man is evil and should be kept in his place. The gorillas I believe could be convinced otherwise. I would attempt to talk with Urko and ask him why he is in the job of security chief. Did he always want to do that particular career or did he dream of doing something else while growing up. I would explain to him that by our observations of wild gorillas, they are peaceful and we now know how intelligent they are. They should be the intellectuals and the chimps should be the warriors. .html .html.htmlGet Carter, starring Hollywood action man Sylvester Stallone, has been voted the worst movie remake of all time.
The classic original, starring Michael Caine, was moved from 1960s Newcastle to Seattle for the 2000 remake.
Film fans were also left unimpressed by the remake of Alfie - a role also made famous by Caine.
Alfie - starring Jude Law - came sixth in the Top 10 Worst Remakes poll, carried out by DVD rental firm ScreenSelect.co.uk.
TOP FIVE
Get Carter
Psycho
Thunderbirds
The Assassin
Charlie's Angels
"Time after time, remakes fail to sparkle like the originals," said Alex Chesterman, founder of ScreenSelect.co.uk.
"The rehashed productions trade off fond memories of much-loved films.
"This poll is an indication that remakes can't compare with films which were classics of their time.
"It also proves you just can't beat Michael Caine," he added.
Second in the poll was Gus Van Sant's attempt to remake the Alfred Hitchcock horror Psycho for a new audience.
Thunderbirds movie was third, followed by Bridget Fonda thriller The Assassin - a remake of the cult film La Femme Nikita.
Other films to make the top 10 were Charlie's Angels - starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu - and Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes.
The poll of 2,000 film fans also showed they preferred the Frank Sinatra original of Ocean's Eleven than the George Clooney and Brad Pitt update.

I have to disagree with Oceans Eleven. The original is a smug load of in
joke nonsense. The remake is much better. The POTA rehash had everything going
for it but a script. Van Helsing was just a big video arcade game with nothing
to say. Psycho was interesting though because it was cast and photographed so
well, Gus Van Sant(saint?) is a genius (usually).

an indication that remakes can't compare with films which were classics of
their time.
"It also proves you just can't beat Michael Caine," he
added.
Second in the poll was Gus Van Sant's attempt to remake the
Alfred Hitchcock horror Psycho for a new audience.
Thunderbirds movie
was third, followed by Bridget Fonda thriller The Assassin - a remake of the
cult film La Femme Nikita.
Other films to make the top 10 were
Charlie's Angels - starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu - and
Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes.
The poll of 2,000 film fans also
showed they preferred the Frank Sinatra original of Ocean's Eleven than the
George Clooney and Brad Pitt update.

Seriously, though, I think one of the fascinating things about POTA
is that none of the major characters in the first film is totally
wrong or right. Taylor represents independence and a free spirit,
but his pride sounds hollow when he declares that "we were better
than you" to Dr. Zaius. Dr. Zaius sees the evils that humanity
wrought on themselves and calls Taylor to account for them. Zaius is
right, be he can't quite see that his own society is bent on the
same destructive path. Cornelius and Zira are faithful friends who
want to do the right thing, but despite their status as hero and
heroine in the film, they are unable to overcome their own
prejudices and stereotypes toward both humans and their fellow apes
(gorillas and orangutans). It makes for complicated characters, the
likes of whom we didn't see in Burton's PA01 . And on any given day,
I can pick out reason's for admiring something in each of the main
characters, even the secretive Dr. Zaius.

A lot of people bring that up (Gorillas are peaceful, Chimps the
belligerent ones.), but you have to remember that in the POTA world Gorillas
were chosen to be the protectors, etc., because of their large size and
strength... It is a natural fit for them and it's their place in the Apes
hierarchy...
Plus, look at it like this: As they evolved, the Chimps not only evolved
intelligence/speech, but they lost their "savage" instincts as they evolved
their peaceful characteristics... And while the Gorillas gained
intelligence/speech, their personalities "devolved" to make them more brutish
and warlike... (The same way as on Land of the Lost, the Sleestaks are
"devolved" descendants of the Altrusians, The Altrusians being a race of
intellects, the Sleestaks warlike creatures...) <.html

So a smaller chimp or orangutan can not protect ape society because of their size? I am not sure about de-evolving personality either. The gorillas would become more intelligent and able to become scientists, doctors etc. Are you saying that the apes respond to size the way high school students do? Elaine<.html <.html

Just want to let everyone know that some new files have been added to Hunter's site.
First, hi-res versions of the 2nd series TV cards I created for Kassidy's site are now available for anyone who wants to print up a set of cards for themselves. I've arranged the cards so they match up to the puzzle backs. Print the fronts, print the backs, paste the sides together and trim using the handy crop marks.
Second, the first issue of the Marvel UK comic series is now available for download in PDF format. The plan is to post an issue each week, to mimic the weekly publication frequency. I'd also hoped to match up with the original publication dates, but due to a freelance job that was more complicated than I expected, I'm starting a week behind. I'll get two issues done by next week to get in sync with the cover dates. Each issue will only be available to download for a few weeks to make room as new issues are added.
