You go girl!!!
I guess some have not done their homework when it comes to evolution...
Reffering to the past response, that is. I am a human and respect the
laws of Derkein. Many of the children of the city have I taught to read...
Not only the everyday language, but the ancient readings from the books of
Semos.
Let's face it, Urko was corrupt from the word "go". Thade was taught from
an ancient rote evoked from legend.
Where was The Lawgiver?
Why didn't we ever get to know him...?
Perhaps it was passed down that he existed ?
Wouldn't it have been easier to go by legend, perhaps that someone you
know had known, than go by something NEVER seen by a father's father's
father?
Finding a false prophet and admitting...
Juda's Priest...!
Urko is blind. He doesn't care who gets in the way whether it be simian
or human.
His faith lies in his "strong-armed" belief that he can become
alpha-male...
Guess what...?
That position lies in the simian hands of another...

I refuse to concede. There are still votes out there to be counted.
I want a recount. I want the absentee votes counted. This isn't over
yet.

Yes, Urko wants to be the alpha male which is natural for gorillas. I like your idea that the lawgiver could be a mythical ape whose wisdom was passed down through the ages. Elaine<.html <.html

.html Personally, I'd break it down this way:
Ursus is Patton, a career military man who aches to command an army
in combat. (And just compare Ursus' speech to the speech at the
beginning of the film 'Patton'. Very similar in tone.
Aldo is a Roman general, a tough guy who gets right in thick of
things with his troops and plots in secret to take over the
government,
Urko is the bureaucrat, he likes the trappings and power of his
position. He'll push the civilian authority but only so far for fear
of losing his position. <.html

anything having to do with Thade and all that doesn't apply here...
I never said that the smaller apes couldn't be protectors of Ape Society...
I said that in the POTA universe, the Gorillas were chosen (appointed) by the
other apes to be the protectors & hunters, police, etc. (This even goes back
to Boulle... While I don't consider Boulle's book as part of the Apes movie/tv

towards this theory as well...) Gorillas are the ones chosen for these

As for the Gorillas "peaceful" personas devolving as their brain
intelligence went up, why isn't that possible? Just because in present times
they are reserved creatures, that doesn't mean as time goes on that they
wouldn't/couldn't evolve aggressive personalities... (I'm sure in prehistoric

Chimpanzees can adopt a pacifistic way of life as the centuries go on, there's
nothing saying that the opposite couldn't happen to the Gorillas... (It'd be not
only a role reversal of Ape over Man, but a role reversal of two species as

If you want to trust a simian, don't trust a chimp...
They will rip your head off as soon as look at you rather than pound their
chest and threaten to...
Boulle's '68 novel sends us to another planet (Sorel), but Serling brought
us down to Earth and brought himself a damned-near nervous breakdown trying
to appease the 20th Century Fox - Gods... The "Statue was basically all they
kept of his screenplay and didn't really even want to credit him that...!
Let's get back to apes, now...
I live it, breathe it, sleep it, and taste it...
Research, baby...
Time evolves and so do they...
Who is to say if Thade came before or after?
He IS a part and will remain whether some like it or not, and he
personafies exactly what an alpha-male would be...
Does Attar appall you? He is strong and brave --- unafraid...
What of the others?
Zira and Cornelius are exceptions because of their beliefs in equality.
(The other chimps fought alongside the gorillas to apprehend Taylor/
throwing stones and shouting obscenities!).
Are we narrow minded --- caring only for a species we wish we could ---
"ape"...?
Savagery rears its head in all whether we want to accept it or not.
Unfortunately, we are supposed to be the responsible species...
The only thing we are responseible for is the extinction of our future...
Long live the Planet of the Apes...!
May they reign in our future and aquire the power of speech...!

You are correct in accordance with Boulle's book, the gorillas are the protectors of society.
I like to place certain things in today's world and at the time that Boulle wrote the book, little was known about primates and their behavior. I still see the chimps being in the military however not all chimps are aggressive. The violent chimps that have been observed in the wild were only part of a particular group(if my memory is correct).
Man has always been violent and while certain groups have been more peaceful than others,if one studies evolution the evidence is there that man has a long history of violence.

First question: What the hell are you talking about here? Whatever you're
saying here isn't what I'm talking about, it's a whole other topic... I was
talking about Planet of the Apes and the heirarchy, and you're talking about
pota2001... These two things are NOT the same... PLANET is future Earth,
pota2001 is something else...
What are you asking when you asked: "Who is to say if Thade came before or
after?" If you're asking if that character came before or after PLANET, it's
obvious he came after the ' 68 movie (which of course followed Boulle's book.)
Anyone can tell you that. And you also say he is a "part"? A part of what? He's
sure not part of the movie or tv series canon, for one thing, the original
PLANET is future Earth, that pota01 movie takes place on another planet... That
right there tells you they are NOT part of the same canon.
And to answer your question, yes, Attar does appall me, as does the whole
idea of Burton/Zanuck or anyone else thinking they could "reimagine" Planet of
the Apes... <.html

It's about time there was a Brent figure available from somebody.
Brent is the forgotten lead of the POTA films. Taylor, Cornelius &
Zira, Caesar and Burke, Virdon & Galen have not only been give most
of the attention by fans but have also had most of the merchandising
focused on them. Mego did C&Z and TV series figures. There were
Caesar, Aldo, Ursus, Zaius and C&Z Aurora models. Medicom did 2

Personally, I luved "Beneath" the best of the films...It was POTA,
and it was good sci-fi, and it was an original -- Mutants underground
in atomic ruins worshiping the bomb -- great stuff...Ursus, the
warmonger with the coolest ape costume...I luved all of it...
And I liked the character James Franciscus built out of what he had
in the script...Brent was my favorite human of all (with the
exception of Nova, for different reasons)...

Thade is definately the alpha male. It is interesting that it has been observed of chimps in the wild, the alpha male doesn't always get females because he puts so much energy into being the alpha male. The quiet chimps often have more females.
I think you are trying to say that both movies show man's destruction, the original more so than pota 2001. Elaine <.html <.html

The personalities of the apes on the tv series does run a full spectrum of apes. Some are gentle, some are mean, some are just doing their job. I like the tv series because we see apes from different parts of ape society. Elaine<.html <.html

From FSM.com:
DVD news, not CD news: for fans of the Jerry Goldsmith/Michael Crichton collaboration who felt that Varese's recent CDs of The Great Train Robbery and Timeline were simply not enough, MGM/UA Home Video has just released PURSUIT on DVD. Pursuit was Crichton's directorial debut, a 1972 ABC Movie of the Week based on his novel Binary
(written under his pulp pseudonym John Lange), starring Ben Gazzara as a government agent engaged in a cat-and-mouse race-against-time with E.G. Marshall as a wealthy fanatic planning a terrorist attack against the Republican convention in San Diego. The film is a brisk, unpretentious memento of the glorious early 70s MOWs, which were largely a mixture of sci-fi, horror and thrillers rather than the female-oriented true crime stories that make up most of the form today, and Goldsmith's twangy suspense score is a fun companion piece to his Escape From the Planet of the Apes.

A "Beneath" playset complete with figures would be nice (you get mutants!).
Or maybe 2 playsets-the church set and the Queensboro Plaza station (you get
Brent & Nova !). If they can make Hogan's Heroes figures for specialty
collectors like some of us why can't they make more Apes?

While Zaius would provide interesting, stimulating conversation, he is
never going to change.
Man is evil and should be kept in his place. The gorillas I believe could
be convinced otherwise. I would attempt to talk with Urko and ask him why he
is in the job of security chief. Did he always want to do that particular
career or did he dream of doing something else while growing up. I would
explain to him that by our observations of wild gorillas, they are peaceful
and we now know how intelligent they are. They should be the intellectuals and
the chimps should be the warriors. Maybe Urko would run screaming from my
house. Elaine

The ape "stereotypes" are true to form, though. Gorillas are big and
strong(er). Society would use that to their advantage. Just like bouncers are
big guys. Doesn't mean they're dumb, but they're perfect for the job.
Chimps seem to be most involved with science in our society. They
get sent up in rockets, are most often the ones in the lab. Perhaps it was felt
they would pick up some things that would be useful in an ape society.
Orangs as administrators? Don't know how that fits in, except they
have a unique look and we all know that politics is image. - - -

You are correct in accordance with Boulle's book, the gorillas are the
protectors of society.
I like to place certain things in today's world and at the time that
Boulle wrote the book, little was known about primates and their behavior. I
still see the chimps being in the military however not all chimps are
aggressive. The violent chimps that have been observed in the wild were only
part of a particular group(if my memory is correct).
Man has always been violent and while certain groups have been more
peaceful than others,if one studies evolution the evidence is there that man
has a long history of violence.

Good point about the amount of chimps in our society that have been exposed to science, that certainly is true. They have been part of many scientific experiments unfortunately and who knows how much they learn from being a part of this(those who survive). it would make sense then, that a large amount of chimps would be scientists. We still know so little about orangutans that it is anyone's guess where they would be on pota. Hollywood and Boulle chose to make them leaders. We do know that they are loners in the wild and there is a strong bond between mother and child. <.html <.html

It would take some time to convince Urko to have peace between humans and apes. I agree with your statements, he definately would call me a fool in the beginning. It would take a long time to convince him and he would never like humans, but I believe he has the intelligence to change. Zaius is a diehard, fundamentalist. He is never going to change. The new issue of Tomart's Action Figure
Digest (# 127, Nov. www.tomart.com.htmlnew_afd.html"
)begins what they say is a one year project to tell the story of Mego toys
directly from it's president, Marty Abrams. This isn't just a photo guide
(there's been plenty of good ones), it's a history, including rare pictures from
Abrams. This first issue is about the company's beginnings and doesn't deal with
POTA (though there's pictures of a couple Action Jackson playsets that became
the POTA village and treehouse). The mag comes out monthly so with probably 12
issues or so it's a good bet they will have an issue devoted to POTA (The
Mego part isn't the whole issue, it's about 16 jam-packed pages, packed with
rare photos, ads and product images). But for Mego fans this is a note for those
who want to get in on the ground floor. Back in the late '90's, Abrams said he
was writing a book for Tomart. That never materialized. I don't know why now
it's these series of articles. There's no word if a book will come later (which
would be cheaper than buying 12 issues). But if they decided not to do a book,
this series is a rarity.
The current issue talks about how Mego was
formed and it's early success. In the late '20's two things were developed that
would be the building blocks of Mego: TV and plastic. But the Great Depression
and World War II put them on hold. Afterwards, the post-war "baby boom" would
add a third element, lots of kids who want toys. Marty's father David was a
salesman for Rel Plastics. Mostly they made household items but they also had a
line of Western plastic figures. David also became in charge of marketing these.
He found that by putting the figures in a box and selling them as a set (instead
of just selling them individually at 10 cent stores) he could sell them at
upscale department stores. Thus began his interest in how packaging and image
turned toys into more than just a piece of plastic. David Abrams began to go off
on his own in the toy industry, importing Japanese toy robots and making small
licensing deals. Soon he started his own company, Mego (inspired by Marty's
younger brother Howie's lament when someone in the family was going somewhere,
"Me go too! Me go too!").
Mego began by promoting other
companies cheap toys for 10 cent and hardware stores for about 7 or 8 years.
Then came the two superstars of the toy world, as they still are over 40 years
later. Barbie was introduced by Mattel in 1959 and was a sensation with her
plastic beauty and many outfits. Mego put out their own version, Maddie Mod,
named after Madeline Abrams, David's wife and Marty's mom. She designed the
oufits Maddie wore. Mego was one of the early companies to produce their product
in Hong Kong to save money. In 1964, G.I. Joe arrived, courtesy of Hasbro.
Mego's answer was Fighting Yank. Both Maddie and Yank were successful.
That brings us to Marty, who in 1965 was
graduating from college with a degree in international business marketing. He
planned to go on to a major NY advertising firm. But during a honeymoon/Mego
trip to Asia (his wife Carol was mistaken for Marilyn Monroe by the locals in
Atani, Japan) he found the toy biz fascinating and decided to join the family
enterprise. The Hong Kong situation was really terrible as far as how employees
were treated, working conditions, etc. so David and Madeline moved there to
supervise and Marty stayed in the U.S. as Mego's president.
Marty put his marketing expertise to work,
checking out the current popular lines, such as Johnny West and Captain Action
(an early license-driven action figure). At the time the Jets had won Super Bowl
III and Joe Namath was a media darling. Marty decided to do a Joe Namath figure
and that became Mego's first licensed property. At that time "licensing toys"
was a very under-developed business. Now it's a major industry (probably thanks
to Mego's innovations) but back then it was just Disney and the Licensing
Corporation of America (which represented Warner Bros. and DC comics). Other
than that, it was just a matter of knocking on doors of the people who owned a
property you wanted to license. Marty got the rights to a Joe Namath action
figure. Ironically, as it was appearing on shelves, Namath got injured during
the first pre-game and was out the whole season! The toy bombed, and Marty
decided never to place so much emphasis on a toy based on a real person (though
Mego would have their share of celebrity toys).
Also while doing the Namath figure, Marty
saw the advantage of smaller figures. He decided to scale down to a 8" figure
(1970), which would become the Mego staple. The first brand Mego put out in this
size was Action Jackson, who would eventually become the company's figurehead.
They also did a female figure, Dinah-mite, who would become the company's
leading lady. But at this early stage Jackson wasn't very successful and Dinah
got delayed until '73. Instead, destiny knocked. Stan Weston, a toy pioneer,
suggested they take the Mego 8" body and create licensed toys based on popular
characters (Stan's original suggestion was Dick Tracy). Capt. Action had dabbled
in licenses like Spiderman and Green Hornet (as costumes the Captain could wear)
but Mego began the idea of cranking out cheap (but beloved) licensed figures on
a grand scale. Their first endeavor was the "World's Greatest Super Heroes" and
Mego got licensing for both D.C. and Marvel comic book characters. They had the
rights to Superman and Batman, as well as Spiderman and the Hulk. Such rights
would be a toy company's dream today but would be impossible now; licensing is
now a huge industry and the superstar characters cost a fortune. The number of
licensed properties Mego had in the 70's is astounding and of course among them
were the first ever POTA figures, considered one of the company's cornerstones.
Next issue covers the superheroes and Mego's rise to becoming THE toy company of
the Me Decade.
The issue of Tomart also shows the latest
offerings form Figures Toy Co., which has taken the idea of Mego nostalgia and
ran with it. People have asked why, considering the popularity of Megos as
collectibles, someone doesn't take the Mego brand back into production. Abrams
says the Mego name is taken. But Figures has started a series of figures that
are dead on in all but name. They have to be seen to be believed, both in
packaging and in the look of the figures. So far they've brought to market
Mego's own brands (World's Greatest Monsters), licenses that Mego did ("Happy
Days, Space:1999) and '70's properties Mego never got around to (Brady Bunch,
the Munsters). They are quality work for a fair price of around $ 15 each. I'd
love for them to do the old Mego POTA figures for fans who can't afford
collector's prices, and maybe new POTA characters Mego never did. Figures says
their main focus is old TV shows (of which POTA had one). In any case I'm
interested in where Figures will take these and how successful they'll be. You
can check out their stuff at www.classictvtoys.com (the Brady
Bunch ones are hilarious).
This post has been long, but in short it's
an interesting time for Mego enthusiasts. - - - Jeff

A friend gave me a DVD of recent "Looney
Tunes" cartoons (Bugs, Daffy, etc.) called "Stranger than Fiction". It includes
3 short cartoons based on POTA ("Planet of the Taz", "Beneath the POTT", "Escape
From the POTT") starring a civilization of Tasmanian Devils. The cartoons aren't
very good (as modern straight to DVD cartoons tend to be) but they've got some
interesting POTA/Looney Tunes designs. They're worth checking out as rentals or
as a purchase for Looney Tunes fans. http://www.toon.com/dvd/It_fiction.html"

.htmlIntel and Microsoft have a new TV ad promoting Windows Media Center XP
that includes an Alien and Dr. Zaius. I saw the commercial last
night. In fact, Dr. Zaius is prominently featured on the web site.
The web site address is www.digitaljoy.com
On the front page, you'll see Dr. Zaius standing behind the couch. If
you click on the "Press Play for More" button, you'll see Dr. Zaius
featured.
If you pull down the menu "Experience the Joy", you'll see "See How It
Works". Select that, and you'll see Zaius on the couch. Select the
button beside him (labeled "Learn, Work, and Play on a Powerful PC"),
and you'll get a Flash video of Dr. Zaius using the PC to look up
info on human brains and receiving instant messages from Zira and
Cornelius.
If any of you have problems accessing the site or don't have Flash
installed, drop me a line and I'll email you screen grabs I did
showing Dr. Zaius.
Pretty cool. I haven't found the commercial itself online (yet).

.html .html.htmlBlade: Trinity writer/director David Goyer told SCI FI
Wire that his proposed remake and update of the
classic 1973 SF movie Soylent Green will pick up where
the original film left off: with the well-known
revelation that "Soylent Green is people!" "I will say
that the reveal at the end of the first movie happened
at the end of our first act," Goyer said in an
interview. "So the first movie is kind of the first
act of our film, and then it's about what happens
afterwards."
The first movie, set in a dystopian future, centers on
a cop (Charlton Heston) who investigates a murder,
leading to the gruesome discovery about the principal
food source of the overburdened population. The film's
surprise ending is by now familiar to audiences, "of
course, which is why you can't have that be the punch
line anymore," Goyer said.
Goyer added that he won't write or direct the remake,
but will instead act as producer under his just-signed
one-year first-look deal with Warner Brothers. Goyer
also wrote the script for the upcoming Batman Begins
for Warner, which Christopher Nolan is directing.
Blade: Trinity, the third movie in the vampire
franchise, is being released by Warner's sister
company, New Line, on Dec. 8.
