Hi Free,

Welcome to the group. Tells us more what you like about POTA. Who's

If he "feels free" - he would be feeling himself, since he

anyone out there that does have the capability will volunteer so
anyone who wants a copy can get one.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Feeling away j/k :D I always liked Taylor, as I am a big Charlton
Heston fan anyway, and the ship is one of the best spaceship designs
I have ever seen. I like the themes that POTA explores, race, class,
society, religion, adventure, Linda Harrison, etc :D I also am very
interested in the time line of POTA as it ties into the rest of the
series, and the paradox it explores. I also enjoy creative writing
and would love to write in a classic POTA rpg...

Subject: a question regarding one of our week ten questions
    .html
I thought I'd better answer this on group.  Here's part of the email we received:

"I hate to argue over the answer key of the Week 10 "The
Interrogation" questions... BUT... the answer to question "What two
opinions does Ann have to say about Burke?" appears flawed. It is in
the way the question is worded. When Ann states that the human "must
be a very special human" to get treatment BEFORE an ape, she is
speaking rhetorically and NOT directly about Burke.  Basically she's
saying what human ANY HUMAN could be so special?  It is only when
    she
looks at him directly does she offer her opinion of what she sees in
Burke. Those two opinions how ever connected are the he "looks
ordinary to me" and that it seems as if "nothing were really wrong
with him." So her direct opinions of Burke is that he is an 1)
    ordinary and 2)well human.

I still maintain that the amount of tools on the tray (given the
angle of the shot) is not answerable.

Still I'm having a lot of fun watching these shows again... I bought
the DVDs awhile ago and never re-watched them all until now.

    Keep up the good work!

    Michael "Protozaius" Endicott
    --- End forwarded message ---

Michael, I'm glad you're having fun watching the show, and of course if you have a disagreement over our answers, you're entitled to say so.  Unfortunately I disagree with your interpretation.  The question was

What two opinions does Ann have to say about Burke?

Note the question doesn't say say Ann had to address Burke directly, only that there were two opinions ABOUT the man.  The first, that the human before her "must be a very special human" because he appears to get preferential treatment over an ape.  In that sense she is very much talking about Burke, as most humans aren't afforded any special treatment at all.

2nd opinion: Ann can't see why he's special at all ("looks ordinary to me") and then clarifies a bit by saying why she feels he looks so ordinary: "as if nothing were really wrong with him". I don't consider the comments to be separate from each other.  Rather one elaborates on the other.

At any rate, that's the reasoning behind the answers. It may all actually come down to seeing the same thing in different ways.  That's why we add that little bit in the rules about the 'judges decisions are final' ;)  Sneaky that way, aren't we?

I hope you continue to participate - there's only 3 more episodes to go after this one.

I think this is the scene you're referring to:

The gorilla in it was the Hunt Leader played by Norman Burton, he's the Gorilla with Zaius when Taylor gets into the fight in the outdoor cage.

As far as I know there is no existing version of the film with this or other deleted scenes. There is the longer version of Battle and I think one person said they saw the alternate more violent cut of Conquest overseas. But there's no longer version of Planet.

It would be nice if FOX found these deleted scenes and had included them as an extra on the DVD. I know some would like to see them restored into the film. Personally, I think the film is perfect as it is and there should be no monkeying around with it (pun intended). :-)

There's only one cut of PLANET.  From the film as we know it you can tell that the scene you mention was cut before final edit because of the Goldsmith music cue during that part of the scene.  If we had an extended cue of "A Bid for Freedom" then we'd know the scene was removed later, but it wasn't.  Probably the decision was made that the scene was unnecessary and that they wanted to keep the movie to a certain length.  However, I would imagine that somewhere in the Fox vaults this scene survives.

Wrong, James.  I have an issue of Famous Monsters of Hollywood with the black and white still of that same shot.  It identifies the actor playing the gorilla as Bob Lombardo.  He was the gorilla photographer after the hunt, the gorilla that spoke to Julius to have "Number 12" ready for surgery in five minutes, and who pushed Zira away from Taylor in the net and identified himself as Security Police (possibly he's the same gorilla pictured in the "Marcus" ads?).  He's also the gorilla featured in the wardrobe and makeup tests in that PLANET featurette with Joe "Mystery Orang" Wong.  You can find the same two mug shots of him in the featurette as well with his name written on the clapboard.  Let's see if you can capture that image and post it here, James.

It's not in the Behind documentary but in the make-up featurette
that's only included in the special editions of the Behind and
Planet DVDs. Luckily, for those that don't have those DVDs the
Featurette is available on the Group's website.
    Just go the website:

Here's the excerpt from the script:

The leader of the Hunt Club, still on horseback, holds up his hand
    as
    the lab wagon approaches.

    LEADER
    Hold it!

Lucius obeys. The hunters on foot swarm around his wagon as
    their
    leader calls authoritatively:

    LEADER
Ah, Doctor Zira! Our wagon broke down! I'm
afraid we'll have to commandeer yours.

304 CLOSER ANGLE - THE LAB WAGON

as the Hunt Club Leader rides over, recognizing the animal
    psychologist.

    ZIRA
You can't! I've two sick humans in the
cage. We're taking them to the chief vet
    at the zoo ...

    LEADER
    (indicating his
    own wagon)
We bagged two live ones today. I'll have
to ask you to take them along.

He moves to the rear of the wagon.

    ZIRA
    (following him;
    frantically)
No, no, my animals are diseased... Leave
them alone! They're diseased, I tell you!

Lucius jumps down and runs toward the rear of the wagon.

305 REVERSE ANGLE - REAR OF WAGON

The hunters have opened the tailgate and are shining their
    torches on
the humans. They sound ready for sport.

    FIRST HUNTER
Give him a taste of fire!

One of the hunters points his torch at Taylor, who, quite
    naturally,
shrinks back as Lucius runs into scene.

    LUCIUS
    Stand back! He's dangerous!

    FIRST HUNTER
    Why?

    ZIRA
He's rabid! His bite is fatal!

    FIRST HUNTER
    You serious?

    LUCIUS
    You would die in agony!
    (with appropriate gestures)
    Frothing at the mouth!

The hunters fall back. Lucius promptly locks the tailgate
    and he and
Zira run back to the front of the wagon. Lucius snaps the
    reins and the
wagon moves off. The hunters follow it a few paces, pausing
    near their
    mounted leader.

    FIRST HUNTER
They treat those animals better than they
    treat us.

    LEADER
I still say the only good human is a dead
    human.

Well, it does say Hunt Leader doesn't it.  However, the Hunt Leader had glyphs on his sash, and the gorilla pictured up on the wagon with Zira and Lucius does not, so I'll have to stick with my opinion that it's not Norman Burton.  I only think it's Robert Lombardo (Marcus, Head of Security Police) because Famous Monsters of Filmland identified him in the photo in an issue from 1968.  I have the issue someplace and will get it out and scan it one of these days.

Just FYI. The current pic is an old Esquire cover. Does any
recognize the human pictured? Of course he went by a different name
      then than he does now.

For Halloween, our group owner Dave Pasco converts his front yard to a house of horrors. While doesn't have to do with POTA, we thought group members would like to see Dave's work. It is an impressive effort considering Dave crafted everything himself with the exception of the skeletons. To view these pics just go the Photos section http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/lst and select the folder titled 'Dave's Halloween'. This is my favorite:

      WOW!

      Great work Dave.

There does seem to be a technical hitch though - I only got to the
4th photo and none of the rest would show.

I'd sure love to see the rest of them though if that can be sorted
      out!

There was a lot of talk about the ape widow in "Planet ..." and is

      Again about the female gorilla:
I´ve heard some thing about a pic at the make up department,
and "tons of pics" a female gorilla in "Beneath ...".

If some one want to share the pics....

I must admit I have to disagree with SFX.

This issue was my LEAST favourite issue of Scrolls!

However, when placed in context, I compare that to a comment John
made about an episode of the TV Show - something like it was his
least fave episode, but still ranked #13 in overall best TV Shows
      ever written!

I have also been wondering what is going on with Ape Chronicles -
      any new news Terry?

James, I noticed you had previous issues of Ape Chronicles as the
homepage picture but I think you missed the issue where Neil, myself
and Dave contributed with and article on the "Beware the Beast"
comic. It has a great new Gideon pisture on it - have you seen it?
      Has anyone else seen it?

of them. I really did want to list the Lawgiver as the answer... I
even stated it in my answer that the statue appears to the RIGHT
going in. Can we get a judge's ruling on this?

      It's just a contest... it's just a contest....

Anyway, I'm still enjoying watching the episodes again!

I've created a new folder in the files called 'Rare shots' . In it are a series of
images that crop up from time to time on Ebay. Some of these images feature
a female extra being made up as a gorilla and these MAY be the photos that
      Jose was referring to.

IMHO I don't think they are supposed to represent a female gorilla - just a
female extra being made up as a male gorilla.

All the other pix are there in case anyone hasn't seen them.

Just an idle thought - In The two towers (movie), Gimli makes a comment that
Dwarf women are so similar to Dwarf men that other races have trouble telling
them apart. I wonder if the same is true of Gorilla females?

Are these posted somewhere so that we can see them? They aren't
opening up on the Groups message board.

Actually, we gave you credit for that question. It was question 2
that all but Scott got wrong because they didn't include Galen who'd
name Virdon says toward the end of the clip.
