.html
.html
As many POTA fans know, FOX produced and distributed promotional
Heralds for each of the five original films. The Heralds were fictional
newspapers that theaters distributed to promote each new film.
It was long thought that the last Herald published was for
Battle in 1973. Recently a startling discovery was made in the vaults of 20th
Century Fox, a promotional Herald for the TV series.
Originally produced to be distributed by theaters during the GO APE
festival in the summer of 1974, this 4 page TV Herald was held back due to
legal complications with CBS. Now after 30 years this piece of POTA history has
been found and can finally be seen by fans.
 OK
I'm lying. FOX never produced a Herald to promote the TV series.
But they should have.
Luckily, enough of us here in the POTA group thought so too. So in
partnership with SIMIAN SCROLLS, the 4 page TV Herald that FOX should
have produced in 1974 has now been published.
Many thanks to Mark Rogers, Kassidy Rae, our own Glen Scheetz and our
friends at SIMIAN SCROLLS for the amazing job they've
done.
Details on how you can get your own copy of the
TV Herald will be announced here in the POTA group in the days and weeks
ahead, so stay tuned.

I think this is the picture you're looking for Jose. Unfortunately,
it's a B&W version.

Today I received my copy of the coveted 'Toon DVDs. I can't tell
you how extremely impressed I am!
I have [basically] no previous knowledge of these cartoons, so this
is a real treat. What a gift to Apes fans!
I want to say thank you to Hunter and Greg P. and Dave and James and
Greg H. and Cougar and Mike R. and anyone else that I might be
forgetting or might not know about.
BTW: I'm not an expert or a critic, but I think the pictures are
very clean and the sound is amazing. I grew up with broadcast TV
and never received pictures like these. Nice work, guys!!
Now, would someone please tell me where these fit in the "timeline"!!

I have heard MANY different interpretations.
My own personal opinion is that this is a TOTALLY different universe

Right down to the pattern on Urko's helmet, it just don't fit!
But some say it does/can...I'll let THEM explain!

.htmlHelen, you can count me among those who feel that neither TV series takes place in the same universe as the films.
I have seen a timeline theory that manages to fit Return in, but you have to subscribe to the 'alternate' school of thought rather than the 'circular' school.
The theory goes that in a post-Battle world where Caesar has managed to make a more peaceful world between humans and apes, technology progresses to what we see in Return. However, humans devolve into mute beasts (remnants of the cat/dog plague?) and are eventually cast out of the cities. The apes are frozen at the technolgical level they achieved with the cooperation of humans, but they'll advance no further.
To me, it is clear that the producers of Return crafted their own version of the saga, keeping certain elements including character names from the film and previous TV series. They also added new elements, such as the monster bird and Kigor the giant ape, and they also gave the apes a higher technology level. If Fox were to try and relaunch the francise again, I think they could do worse than to take a similar approach (although they could leave behind the screeching of the monster bird, thank you very much.)
One theory as to why the apes are more advanced in the cartoon than they are in the film or previous series is that it was easier/cheaper to animate apes in tanks and jeeps that it would have been to put them on horses. Of course, for the films it was easier/cheaper to construct the cave-like buildings of Ape City than it would have been to build modern-day structures that were scaled to apes.

The Brent on RETURN isn't the same one as in BENEATH... As far as the same names, they just went with those names for "name recognition/name familiarity." (The same way the Zaius name was carried over from the movies to the live TV series...) I mean look, Urko is in RETURN, yet he didn't even exist in the world of Zira/Cornelius, etc. so that alone should tell you they just used familiar names, rather than coming up with new ones... Also, the year on RETURN is 3979, which is a year after Taylor had crashed, and 34 years after (BENEATH's ) Brent's broken chronometer of 3955... I don't think it was a deliberate move to "make them fit", it was just easier to use names that kid's already knew...
Definitely the technology is different. That could lead a person to
speculate that maybe the Apes also devolved as time went on.
Again, the RETURN series is set in 3979, which is "after" the events of PLANET/BENEATH... So they couldn't have devolved, the animated series is just another take on the APES name...<.html

The Return series is also consistent with the Cyclical theory. The
Circular theory requires that events keep repeating themselves. The
Cyclical theory is similar to both the Alternate and Circular
theories, in that events keep playing out in a similar fashion
(cycle of evolved apes, time travel, ape city, bomb, etc.), but that
they play out differently each time. E.g. a John Brent appears in
one time cycle at a certain date, but a Ronald Brent turns up at
another date in another cycle. This is my preferred take on things,
and it allows me to deal better with all of the discrepancies.

It is one of my favorites and tonite reminded me of
how much i liked it
the pacing is so good
it has such happy moments and then really brings it
down to depression near the end
anybody notice that Milo really acts and talks like
Roddy does later as Galen in the TV series?
I thought it could have been Roddy
speaking
is Hasslein mentioned in "conquest"
I wondered how much would the POTA timeline change
if Hasslein himself is not killed in this movie and would go on further in the
storyline would he be a hero or
a criminal? <.html <.html

.html Hello. I just joined.
My name is Ray Alma. I'm a freelance cartoonist and huge POTA fan.
One of my main clients is Mad magazine. I was lucky enough (or
unlucky, depending on how you feel about it) to draw the Mad
adapation of the Burton remake in 2001. It appeared in Mad #411. I
threw in as many references to the original movie series that I could.
I uploaded some excerpts from the Mad piece in the FanArt section.
I hope you guys like them.
I collect action figures, mainly G.I.Joes. They were the main toy I
enjoyed as a kid, but I also loved my 8" Mego POTA figures and have
been collecting them as well. I always wanted G.I.Joe scale Ape
figures, and I'm very excited and hopeful about the upcoming Sideshow
figures. The Hasbro ones just didn't cut it.
Collecting the Megos and buying Sausville's POTA collectibles book
has led me to expand my POTA collecting. I mainly tried to re-acquire
the stuff I had as a kid; the Marvel comic/magazines, TV trading
cards,puzzles,models, etc.
I also like some new stuff. I just completed the Medicom 6" figures.
I look forward to contributing to this site.
Thanks.
Happy Holidays!

I was wondering, one of the things that plagued the Marvel movie adaptations

being a parody are they unable to complain? (assuming they wanted to)

THANKS SO MUCH!! These are by far the nicest DVD's I've seen in a long while for something like this!!! I've seen tapes at the Comic Con and always thought about buying a set, but they've pretty much always sucked. However, these are crisp and clear and the sound is wonderful!!!
Thanks again!

Ho Ray!
Welcome to the Planet of the Apes! With your cartoon work on a POTA
Mad edition, that gives you an honored spot in Apes lore! I know
what you mean about collecting and trying to get back the things
that got thrown out over the years. My nephew got to my POTA Mego
collection long before I knew about it, and all I have is a mish-
mash of legs, a couple of ape heads, a Zaius jacket, and some brown
leggings. Oh, and my Mego Spock shirt. I have since collected most
of my lost collection back on eBay and the odd antique toy
convention.
I am enjoying the Sideshow figures, and have the 2 Zaius figures
now. I am eagerly (gross understatement) awaiting the 18.5 inch tall
Lawgiver statue! Call me wacky, but I'd especially love to have a
Virgil action figure. There just aren't enough orangutans out there!
Tell us about your favorite POTA collectibles.
Again, welcome.

.html Okay, there hasn't been much talk on Burton's Apes film for a bit.
PA01 was an homage to the original film. Some might say that was
it's best quality.
Let's try and list all of the PA68 references there are in Burton's
take on the legend. One that comes to mind (and I think Burton
mentions this in the commentary, doesn't he?) is the look of Calima
(ruins of the USAF Oberon). The ruin was designed to be reminiscent
of the crown of the burnt-out Statue of Liberty from Schaffner's
film. Someone else care to offer the next one?

its a very tidy thing to make everything in POTA
history fit all together
with alternate universes and timelines etc it can
all be done
but it complicates things too!
Helen, you can count me among those who feel that neither TV series takes
place in the same universe as the films.
I have seen a timeline theory that manages to fit Return in, but you have
to subscribe to the 'alternate' school of thought rather than the 'circular'
school.
The theory goes that in a post-Battle world where Caesar has managed to
make a more peaceful world between humans and apes, technology progresses to
what we see in Return. However, humans devolve into mute beasts (remnants of
the cat/dog plague?) and are eventually cast out of the cities. The apes are
frozen at the technolgical level they achieved with the cooperation of humans,
but they'll advance no further.
To me, it is clear that the producers of Return crafted their own version
of the saga, keeping certain elements including character names from the film
and previous TV series. They also added new elements, such as the monster bird
and Kigor the giant ape, and they also gave the apes a higher technology
level. If Fox were to try and relaunch the francise again, I think they could
do worse than to take a similar approach (although they could leave behind the
screeching of the monster bird, thank you very much.)
One theory as to why the apes are more advanced in the cartoon than they
are in the film or previous series is that it was easier/cheaper to
animate apes in tanks and jeeps that it would have been to put them on
horses. Of course, for the films it was easier/cheaper to construct the
cave-like buildings of Ape City than it would have been to build modern-day
structures that were scaled to apes.

Definitely the technology is
different. That could lead a person to speculate that maybe the
Apes also devolved as time went on.
Nope. I don't think they
belong in the same universe. (But, I don't think the TV series
belongs in the same universe either.)

I felt the same way about the Marvel comics: "Why can't they make
that look like Charlton Heston?". I guess it was a money thing. Not
having the rights to use specific likenesses. Same deal with the Mego
Astronaut.
That was the great thing about the Mad and Cracked parodies, they
were able to use the particular actors. Parody/satire is protected
under copyright imfringement laws. I don't know if any celeb ever
complained about how they were portrayed in Mad. If they did, I don't
think that there is much they could do legally. More often than not,
celebs who have appeared in Mad will contact the mag and ask to buy
the original art. They get a kick out it. I've sold some of my Mad
art to some celebs. Unfortunately, no one from the '01 POTA movie has
contacted me about buying that art. I guess they're all trying to
forget about it.
Hey Linda Harrison, if you're out there - call me. I'll give you a
good price on the art. ;)

.htmlMenluth,
How are the Sideshow Zaius'?
I've heard negative reviews about the exclusive Dr. People have said
that the coloring and stitching on his jacket are off. Let me know
what you think.
It's hard for me to pick my favorite collectible. I feel like I'm
discriminating, so that I've only bought the stuff I really, really
like. So for me, it's kinda everything I have.
I guess if you threatened me with "dissection and death (in that
order)", then I'd have to say the Mego figures. They were the overall
most fun as a kid. Hours of potential fun there.
I have a feeling that I'm going to really like the Sideshow Apes.
We'll see.
By the way, you're not wacky for wanting a Virgil figure. I wouldn't
mind one either. When Medicom made Aldo and Ceaser, I really thought
that they'd continue with even more characters: Virgil, Lisa,
Mutants, etc.
Oh well.It wouldve' been cool.

When that might be and what it will look like is anyone's guess. As Jeff K has
pointed out the upcoming Peter Jackson directed King Kong may well be a
deciding factor. If it's a hit, simian themed movies might well become the
flavour of the month.
I don't think we will ever see 'classic' apes again, other than affectionate
parodies and merchandising. I don't think a sequel to Burton's version is likely
either, you'd need the merchandise people to sign on the dotted line before a
frame of film was green lit and too many manufacturers got badly burned last
time. Dark Horse comics for instance.
There's still Boulle's original which to me seems a viable contender for the
Sci- Fi channel or perhaps Hallmark. My money would be on that - or yet
another 're-imagining'.

rather the camera angles from which the reveal was shot.
In the 2001 movie we see Marky Mark shot from a high angle and looking up
just like Taylor in the original when he first sees the statue. Then some 'spikes'
creep into shot - a touch of deja vu that, for a moment suggests the crown of
the statue of Liberty.
It's pretty subtle - unlike Attar's 'get your stinking paws off me' "Tribute"

My Megos, too. Although I am partial to my round trash can. I had
wanted one of those when I was kid, but never got one. When I was in
my 30s, I found one in an antique store, but it was in really bad
shape, and they wanted $40 for it. I couldn't see paying that a can
in such poor condition, so I passed on it. When I later decided that,
yeah, I still wanted it, it was gone.
Then along came eBay. Back when eBay was new, I found a nearly-new
condition round Apes trash can. I decided that I was going to win
that auction, no matter what it cost. I ended up getting the can for
something like $60, and it's my most-treasured collectible, after the
Megos.

My General Urko Mego is one of my all-time favorite Christmas presents from when I was a kid, and certainly ranks high on my list of favorite POTA collectibles. But if push came to shove I'd probably have to pick my set of the TV cards as my absolute favorite POTA collectible. Those were the first trading cards I'd ever collected. My best friend at the time was collecting them, too, so we did lots of trading. And I particularly remember when I bought the pack that finally had the last card I needed to complete my set (it was card number 1).

post pictures of some of my favorite Ape stuff (check "Photos" under
Protozaius Collection). My VERY favorite item is the original,
signed Morton Haack concept drawing of a chimp. It was even seen in
the vintage documentary of the making of the original Ape film... as
seen on the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" DVD.
Also several years ago. I got started into collecting 12" first shots
and have a wide collection of "Star Wars" and "Ape" figures.
But.. still, all those Megos do have a strong sentimental appeal....
ANd I too still have that Ape Trash can. My mom bought it for me as
part of the back-to-school materials bought that year.

About twenty five years later and with a little eBay help I won the sacred can and the smaller oval shaped can which was misspelled in the heading and I won them both for twenty bucks! The coolest cans ever and both looking minty for 30 years!! My Mego's (have the entire Apes line of figs and playsets) is second with the Medicom and busts a far third. I love the new toon DVD's right now... I've watched them all about five times in the last week making my wife a little irked but what the hey!

Wow! That's great. I got into a bidding war with someone in the last
five minutes, but I was determined to get it, no matter what it cost.
;-)
> My Mego's (have the entire Apes line of figs and playsets)
That's very cool. I have a Cornelius, a Zira, a Galen, and a soldier
ape who's missing most of his stuff. All of those I bought via eBay.
My sad story is that I had quite a few of the Megos (nothing like all
of them, but more than I have now) as a kid, and I kept them at my
dad's, where I played with them and with my step-brother's Megos when
I visited. When I stopped visiting (long story) when I was 12, I
never was able to go back to get my stuff, and consequently lost all
my Apes and a bunch of GI Joe stuff, too. So, again, when eBay came
along, I was ecstatic to find people selling Megos and decided I had
to get a Mego Cornelius and Mego Zira, at least. I don't play with
them now ;-), but it does give me warm fuzzies to look at 'em on the
shelf in front of me.

Yes, I still have my original artwork for the Mad parody of the '01

Tim,
I believe Norman Mingo did the Mad cover with a gap toothed Chimp pulling off an Alfred E. Neuman mask.
Yes, I still have my original artwork for the Mad parody of the '01 POTA. Around the time I did it, I went to a toy/sci-fi show and Linda Harrison was there. I wished I had the artwork with me. I'd have asked her to sign it for me. (I put her in one of the panels).
I was still excited to meet her and get a picture with her.

.htmlI remember getting the Mego treehouse and Zaius (still have them) for
Christmas (1975?), but my favorite would probably be the regular Mego
ape soldier. We moved to a small town in the summer of '76 where
they didn't have a great selection, and I never even saw an Ursus or
Urko until the internet came around. The TV trading cards were
great, too, and I even picked up the 'not too badly damaged' ones
that my neighbor shot with his b-b gun... since by then we were out
in the sticks of a small town and it doesn't seem like we got to go
into town for shopping much. Never had the full set, not sure where
they are now. Hopefully in a box somewhere.

probably have to pick my set of the TV cards as my absolute favorite
POTA collectible. Those were the first trading cards I'd ever
collected. My best friend at the time was collecting them, too, so we
did lots of trading. And I particularly remember when I bought the
pack that finally had the last card I needed to complete my set (it
was card number 1).

.htmlso was the tree-house playset the most coveted item when you were child?
kind of like the star wars death star set a few years later?

Card 9 was the rare one in my hometown. I did finally trade for one,
but I think it was months after I started collecting them that I
finally got that one.
And like Elaine, I first saw my first Apes movie, CONQUEST, at the
drive-in. I *think* it was a double bill of FROGS and CONQUEST.
