I do because I firmly believe that was the intention of the filmmakers. Paul Dehn who wrote or co-wrote the first three sequels and did the final rewrite on BATTLE is quoted several times that it is meant to be a big circle. Also, if the events of ESCAPE were meant to create a new timeline that was different from the timeline of PLANET & BENEATH, I feel there would have been at least one line of dialogue to directly state as much over the course of the final three films. However, the opposite seems true. Hasslein in ESCAPE (and later Breck in CONQUEST and even Caesar in BATTLE) believe history is on a course to the events in PLANET & BENEATH and that they must take action to 'change lanes' so that history changes and a new timeline created.

I think that BATTLE can be seen as the 'fork in the road'. If ape and man can continue down the road of peace that Caesar started them on, then the events of then the events of PLANET & BENEATH won't happen. But if they cannot, then they will ultimately destroy the world. A kind of 'morality tale' to end the series.
There are many discrepancies and contridictions in the Apes films. Which is probably more due to the nature in which the film were made. The filmmakers thinking each film would be the last. Also, they were made at a time before Home Video, so they couldn't envision fans pouring over every detail for 30 years.
The alternate timeline theory is an imaginative way to address those discrepencies, but it is not the definitive one. There are many others that are just as valid. In the end (and I'm paraphasing Jeff Krueger here) it is up to every fan to accept which version or theory make him or her happy. <.html

.htmlHey Ron,
Check out the Videos section of the Group Website. Compare what we
have there to what is on your tape.
When you convert it to DVD, you may want to send a copy to Hunter.
He's putting together a rareties DVD and may want to include some of
what you have.
Thanks.

I said they tried to 'change lanes' it is uncertain if they were
successful or not. That question was never definitively answered by
the filmmakers. However, Dehn stated the tear on Caesar's statue at
the end of BATTLE as an indication that his efforts ultimately
failed. But then again it is all up to the individuals interpetation. <.html

The line of dialogue from the script goes as
follows:
CORNELIUS At first they barked their refusal. And then,
on a historic day comemorated by my species and fully documented in the
secret scrolls, there came an Ape called Aldo, who didn't bark.
He articulated. He spoke a word which had been spoken to him, time
without number, by Humans. He said 'No'.
The line itself has an
inherent contradiction. How could the event be fully commemorated by the
Apes if it is documented in 'Secret Scrolls'. If everyone knows about it
then the scroll can't be a secret. In the film the line is changed to the
Sacred Scrolls. I guess they noticed the contradiction too.
However, the whole thing can be resolved by looking at the facts
presented and making some assumptions.
First, we know from the
first film that the Ape populace knows nothing about man once ruling over
the earth. This is know only to higher ups like Dr. Zaius who keep it a
well guarded secret.
Second, There are history scrolls kept secret
from the masses. Cornelius states that in ESCAPE. (This is totally
consistant with the first point.) In these scrolls the knowledge of man's
civilization and the story of Aldo are documented.
Third, at some
point between the end of PLANET and the beginning of ESCAPE, Cornelius,
and possibly Zira too, were given access to these secret history scrolls.
(This is not inconsistant with either of the first two
points.)
Fourth, the Apes commemorated the date Aldo said no. Now this
is inconsistant with the earlier points.
Now here's where you have
to make an assumption. The Ape rulers while wanting to keep the secret yet
still commemorate the day built a mythology around Aldo that was presented
to the masses. Like an Adam figure, he's the first ape to speak. What he
said and whom he said it to would be kept secret but he would still be
seen historically as the first Ape.
That makes sense. Seems like the oruangs spent their whole life making
up lies and keeping secrets they learned from the
masses.

I agree with you on this point. I refer to it as a "cyclical" rather
than circular timeline. Similar cycles of events keep taking place,
but not necessarily in exactly the same way each time.

And, I am wondering, where exactly did you see the quote from Dehn, where you said that he "stated the tear on Caesar's statue at the end of BATTLE as an indication that his efforts ultimately failed." Was it in a magazine, a book, or what?

Ho, James!
It seems reasonable, and likely the only way to address the
discrepancy between what we know (most apes no nothing about the
human past) and what Cornelius says, that apes commemorate the date
Aldo said no. Who would he have been saying no to? It would raise
too many questions for the apes. They would either, as you suggest,
be commemorating Aldo as some kind of first ape, like Semos, or as
the first ape to speak a word. I had forgotten about "Aldo Day" when
I asked this question. I wonder what this day would have been called
in Ape City?

Cornelius does say that Apes were slaves to Man for about 500 years... The Scrolls that he is speaking of tell the story of that, and the "No" Aldo spoke was in defiance to Humans... "He spoke a word which had been spoke to him time without number by humans... He said... 'No'..." <.html

all the different versions of POTA. The original novel in one cycle,
the films in another cycle, the Cartoon in a different cycle and
even the 2001 remake in fourth cycle.

Good point but we never see the Lawgiver refered to in PLANET &
BENEATH. All we know of his is from a few selected quotes of the
Sacred Scrolls. We don't know if it is even the same Lawgiver. Even
assuming that it is, the Lawgiver in Battle still talks of "Evil men
who betrayed God's trust". Now of course he was talking about humans
from centuries earlier. Not the humans that were currently living at
peace with the apes. So then it is possible that later generations
of apes only focused on the negative references to humans made by
the Lawgiver. This is something that happens with religious and
historical texts very often.
> That is not to say that a lot further down

True again, and it could have changed the Lawgiver's attitude or
gave rise to a more human hating Ape as Lawgiver. But you can argue
the inconsistancies back and forth all day. In the end, its up to
each of us to decide with interpetation and which explanation for
the discrepencies we like best.

Dehn's comment is at the bottom of page 211 of Russo's book, POTA
Revisited. The exact quote is as follows:
"I have given a lot of thought to a possible new end to the
picture,' he told Jacobs, 'but have come up with nothing-chiefly
because I am more than ever convince that the present end is the
right one for the last of the series. For the series to be linked
consecutively in the form of a 'saga' (or even an epic!) we need to
know that Caesar's good intentions failed-and the tear is both a
necessary and moving forcast of Earth's destruction in BENEATH.
Naturally, if anyone should come up with a better idea for conveying
this sense of Earth's final doom, I should be grateful for the
opportunity of seeing and working on it." <.html

While I see what you're saying as far as your liking the cyclical

I was re-reading a book today that I read a couple of years before I
started to like the Planet of the Apes. It is one of my favorite books, but I
didn't realize that it had so many PotA TV series references in it.
For instance we have a Dr. Al Virdon. Thought it might be a coincidence at
first, but then as I read further I found a Pete Burke. Thought that this
was slightly interesting.
If you wanna check out the book it is called The Last Guardian by
Shane Johnson. Very good book. It was
published in 2000, but the man who wrote it started writing with his friend in

When the original movie came out in 1968 there were no toys or games. I was just eight years old and had to settle for the commercials for the movie. I did have my "Man from U.N.C.L.E." figures and Marx figures and of course G.I. Joe.
Now I look at these 12" figures from Sideshow and the little Medicoms and really all I can say is -- WHERE WERE YOU IN '68?!!!

Those are some good ideas, Rory. And the TV
show would've been helped to by mixing up the situations. But "Beneath" kinda
makes Zauis an old softie and lets Ursus be the bad guy, so I'd believe
(the "Beneath") Zauis would let Zira and her love slave off. Whether it's not
the Zauis from "Planet" or we just had him pegged wrong is open to question. - -

.htmlThanks for the concern Cougar but no need - I have actually hit a
creative peak. I have also been off work for nearly 3 months now,
which means I have had time to leisurely get it all on paper.
Rory was supposed to be writing, or co-writing a prequel to Planet
but he decided not to because he can't embrace any reason why humans
would domesticate gorillas and chimps.
I have some ideas and while Rory has a point, I think I can convince
the reader without getting too detailed or confusing. I mean if
they suspend their belief long enough to watch "talking monkeys"
without laughing, then they will easily be convinced there were
reasons for humans to throw open their doors to them! ;)
And there are plenty of "ape authors" out there - Kasey writes some
fine stuff and the DG has an entire "satellite" site filled with
great stories.
I'm actually trying to sell an idea that this generation might buy -
and somehow encapsulate the soul of the whole enigma at the same
time. Problem is we all have our own ideas of what the "soul" of
POTA is.
I actually think any attempt at resurrecting the TV Show with the
same formula that got it canned after 14 episodes of some of the
sloppiest POTA work ever (scripts, makeup, actors - you NAME it!)
would be a horrible mistake. Out of the 14 episodes, they probably
made about 10 too many - and believe it or not I love the TV Show (I
love my kids too - but where I see they have potential I don't kid
myself that they have abilty).
Anyway - I'm not burning out yet Cougar, but I would love to see
something from Rory, or you!

I don't know about that... I think it could work as a resurrected series, at least in comic form... Some of the TV comic stories they did in the UK Annuals were actually pretty good, artistically and storywise... The potential "is" there, it just maybe needs a different execution... As far as where you said the scripts were poor, not entirely true... To me, 7 of the episodes were excellent, or at least very good... Thats not saying the others didnt have their moments, but some, like "The Interrogation" start off right, then get stupid... As far as the acting, that was more because of who they cast, not the script itself... I can see where people say Sondra Locke's perfomance is terrible, but then her bad acting is made up for by the excellent work of Percy Rodrigues as Aboro... As far as the bad make-ups, that is more of a budgetary thing, plus they had to grind them out to keep everything on the weekly TV series shooting schedule... (Plus, to save money,
did you know that they reused appliances? An appliance used on a principal actor would be used on a background Ape the next day...) Anyway, I think it could still have some potential at least in the comic/graphic novel form. <.html

and Pete finding a way back home. It is too bad that Roddy and MArk
have passed on to play Galen and Urko. But maybe if he is still
alive the actor who played Cornelius in Beneath could play Galen.
I hope no one steals my idea here but I have always kicked the
possiblilty of perhaps Alans son Chris coming to find him and Pete
in a resuce effort much like Brent came to find Taylor.
That would be cool!!!

.htmlIt is a bit of a leap I admit. There is another scenario. Perhaps
C&Z's heresy trial had not yet occured. Beneath takes place very
close to the end of Planet so it is possible the trial had not yet
taken place. C&Z then used Zaius' absence to gain access to
the 'Secret Scrolls'. What they learned from the scrolls was such
dangerous knowledge, it provided the motivation for them to go off
with Milo in Taylor's ship.
Also, you mention the chimpanzee underground of war protesters. The
comic strip that Terry posted yesterday is about that underground.
Hope you like it.

True True, Queequeg. I don't think it's just gorillas with guns,

chimpette, but all of the above. The new movie tried to include
everything in it, but omitted one of these essential ingredients.
That was good solid writing! That was a major stumbling block.
That and a melodramatic misanthrope defending his own race.

I"m letting my girlfriend watches the 5 POTA movies
for the first time ever
She brings up some interesting points as we watch
them since i'm listening to her first impressions
Her questions today are:
The Governor orders the guard to electrocute Caesar
to death once they capture him
the guard turns it on and Caesar appears to have
tons of voltage sent through his body which causes his death
but Caesar is faking right? did Caesar's
accomplice turn off the entire power of electricity or what?
if there was no power sent than the guard should
have seen it didnt work?
if it didnt work could Caesar really have known to
fake his own death?
was Caesar too quick to kill the guard if he had
never killed before ?
how much anger is in Caesar?

Caesar is looking at the Guard and the console while the Guard is
looking at Caesar. The circuit that McDonald turned off must have
been only for the juice that went to the table. That's not odd since
it would require different lines because of the higher levels of
electricity they would carry.

strips. It is projected that the full story (which focuses on the
Chimpanzee protestors seen in Beneath) will take 30 or more strips
to complete.
Unfortunately, due to health reasons our artist, Dan, had to back
out of the project. We released the first strips to see if there was
any interest in continuing the story and if there were anyone out
there with artistic ability that would like to take over those
duties.

Thanks for that screen shot.
It clearly illustrates that anyone
actually watching the movie with
eye connected to their brains
should have no questions, and
that their are no stupid questions
only stupid girls, as the many
songs with that title have proven.
But seriously, if not for them, you
wouldn't have all those movies
where they throw their love away
in a pointless martyresc gesture
that ruins three lives for the price
of one.

I have a theory about the sequence of events in the TV and animated
series', there are still many contradictions but it does
tie up a few loose ends:
Firstly, in the opening episode of the TV series Zaius, Urko
and Galen discuss the appearance of
astronauts "more than ten years ago" which raises more questions
than it answers. This hints at a whole part of the apes
history which has been covered up entirely.
Secondly, the fact that Zaius and Urko appear in both series
is too much of a coincidence (even if you accept that
Zaius, Cornelius, Zira and Nova all reappear in the first movie).
Thirdly, the ultimate fate of all these characters is left
open to speculation since both series were cancelled
prematurely.
And fourthly, most crucially, the ships chronometers cannot
be trusted: Taylor's clock showed the year 3978 when
in fact Brent, arriving after him, read the year as 3955, the year
of Earth's destruction, so even the movie series
contradicted itself. The animated series showed the year 3979,
obviously suffering from the same malfunction as Taylor's.
The problem with making the different versions tie in is the dates
that are mentioned once in each version, and maybe we
shouldn't rely on them completely. Even Virdon and Burke are
uncertain that their clock showed the correct year but perhaps
their's at least was about right.I reckon that the events in the
animated series are the events recalled by Zaius
and Urko ten years later, in the TV series, and that these two
characters alone know the full history of the apes and have
chosen to keep it from even other apes...
OK, so I know you have to ask about the technology of the
apes in the animated series, but perhaps they stumbled
upon a deserted human city and used it's resources (military
supplies, fuel, etc.) until they were exhausted as in the
Adventure Comics' Ape City. It's a stretch of the imagination, but
it fills in the gaps in the story. I also have ideas
about Brent attacking the Ape leaders after his friends were killed
(in episode 1 of the TV series, Zaius has a grenade
in his office which was found on a human attacker). <.html
