I don't think so. Here's why . . .
When the bellhop asked here if
it was her's, she said, "Of course
it's mine." True she could have
found it on the ship and just thought
it was pretty and claimed it as her
own. But judging from her nature
she wouldn't have reacted that way
if it wasn't her's.
I always thought her answer was, in her mind, a response to an obvious
question-after all, who else in the hotel lobby could it belong to? Of course,
this is all open to various interpretations.

# 10 should start shipping late Jan - early Feb. It IS something of
an Escape special but there will be plenty of other (non Escape)
reading too.

.html Cougar, we're hoping to get Scrolls #10 out by the end of this
month. It will have an Escape theme, with an original painted cover by
Mike McColm and an original comic strip by him. We've got two Escape
themed articles and the Jerry Pornelle interview. We've also got an
interview with some guy called Ploog. If we are delayed, it will be
production delays with the printer, who helps me get this done
cheaper than normal for such volume(which means I don't risk hassling
him!) As to what I regard as 'canon', I would vote for the novels,
even though I know others will think that's odd. Apes started out as
a novel and, in many ways, the printed page is the best medium for
Apes.Incidentally, David Gerrold says in Scrolls #6 that he
worked 'directly from their[the Corrington's] script'. Jerry
Pournelle has a very definite view on who deserves credit for
Escape. Are fanzines allowed to do teaser trailers?! John, Scrolls. <.html

.htmlHi Mark...
Check out www.bamm.com . Click on Hard to find books in the drop
down and search out Monkey Planet and Planet of the Apes. You
probably are getting a fair price at $350.00, but a while back I saw
one listed for something in the thousands! At $350.00 it is worth
keeping as a personal keepsake IMHO. (Unless you need the money --
that's a different story.) What condition is it in? Do you have
children?

anyway. Unless they are somehow sealed with waterproof gaskets or
something to protect the contents, I don't get the shape. I
definitely see your point. Hot in the sun, cold in the snow. Not
very comfortable to wear about, even in nice weather.
And apparently they weren't hard to open. The dumb humans did it!

and even contradicted himself within the same film. However, I would
also point out that continuity was not something that was worried
about a lot in the industry back then. Since their was no home video
at the time, I don't think they expected fans to keep track of all
the details.
There is no other film series from that time to compare but just
look at TV shows from that period. The backstories of main
characters in shows like Mash & The Odd Couple changed almost from
episode to episode. (ie Oscar & Felix met in grade school, Oscar &
Felix met on jury duty, Oscar & Felis met in the Army/Hawkeye's
parents were dead and had a sister, Hawkeye's parents were both
alive and he was an only child, Hawkeye's dad was alive and mother
dead, etc.) I assume producers and writers didn't think the audience
would notice discrepencies.
One thing I think we can all thank both Star Wars & Star Trek for is
a respect for continuity. I read once that Paramount has people who
are Trek experts who read every script just to catch any continuity
errors as well as archivist who keep track of everything.

Star Trek had its share of inconsistencies too. Before they called it Star

ancestors who married a human (not his Mom), etc etc. Shows like Time Tunnel had
a continuity expert on the staff for all the good it did. There were a lot of
continuity problems on most TV shows & movies of that time.

have missed much of the action!
Someone mentioned Taylor's "new Eve" comment about Lieutenant
Stewart (no first name ever given, as far as I know). I view
Taylor's words there as hyperbole, more like wishful thinking or
male boasting. I don't see Air Force One's mission as one of
colonization (btw, A. F. 1 is what the trading cards call Taylor's
ship, making it the only semi-official name for the vessel).
The astronauts appear to be on a mission of either light-speed space
exploration or a time travel experiment or both. It seems clear that
all four astronauts knew that they would be returning to another
time period, unless they also expected to be reversing the time
travel and going back home to their own time.
In either case, I don't think Taylor was saying that Stewart
intended to be a mate for the 3 astronauts. He was just letting his
mind wander a bit. Your thoughts?

however, from a screenplay perspective, i beleive the comment draws up thoughts about the idyllic garden of eden...so that the audience is even more shocked to see the primitive humans be attacked while they are peacefuly grazing.

think about how Zira and Ari compare as characters. Ari (PA01) is
clearly based on, or inspired by, Dr. Zira's character from PA68.
What do we know about these two?
Ari was 27 at the time Leo Davidson landed on planet New Hope (see
Database link for timeline info). She was born into wealth and
status, but shunned the accepted beliefs of her social class. Ari
was indulged by her father, who scolded her anti-establishment
behavior, but generally appeased her. Ari was inquisitive about the
past, and questioned ape history as handed down for generations. She
has the mind of humanitarian activist, but seems to act alone, not
being a part of any group of apes who share her way of thinking.
Zira is also of an upper class privileged group of apes. What is her
age in Planet? Unlike Ari, she seems to have pursued higher
education and is a working professional. Ari, despite her strong
beliefs, just seems to spend her time shopping in Derkein city
centre! Like Ari, Zira also has interesting ape fashions. Zira and
Ari both have negative opinions concerning the way their societies
are run, and both are not afraid of the consequences of speaking up
about it.
Who is the stronger activist of the two? Which of them is more
likely to lead a revolution in simian thinking about their
societies? Had Zira stayed in Ape City, would she eventually have
settled into an establishment lifestyle, and returned to human
dissection and vivisection? Would Ari lose her fear and become a
confident leader? Did Ari also have a carpet bag, and if so, what

At least as far as costumes and sets are concerned. No way are

Enterprise seems more modern than that even though it's further

runs pretty good with what similar things go for on eBay. (Not

.htmlAnyway, nothing is worth any more than someone is willing to pay for
it. So, the question is: Is it worth #350.00 to keep it? That's
what he sacrifices if he has an offer and doesn't sell.

Okay, I see the diff.
The one I was looking at was a softcover first edition
by Penguin, not the Secker & Warburg of London.
Mine is a first edition hardback by Vanguard of
New York. It only cost like 50 bucks, but it's not
under the Monkey Planet title either. Still nice.

.htmlPlease someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the
original novel was ever published in the United States under any
other title than "Planet of the Apes".
Again I could be wrong but I believe the Monkey Planet title was
only used in UK editions because the original publisher there
incorrectly translated the title.

.htmlI may be wrong, but I disagree with you somewhat.
After Taylor and Nova were seperated into two different cages before
the trail, Taylor tells Nova, "Did I tell you about Stewart? Now
there was a lovely girl; the most precious cargo we brought along.
She was to be our new Eve, with our hot and eager help of course."
He then says to Nova, "Do you love me I wonder. Can you love I
wonder. Well, your are not as smart as Stewart but you are the only
girl in town..."
To me, this says Stewart was suppose to be the "new Eve" if they
wasn't able to return, and if they reach a time period where there
was no human civilization, they were to start a new one. If you go
to the Marvel comic, using one of the early final drafts, when they
discover Stewart was dead Taylor says, "Well, that's it. Three Adams
and no Eve..."
I don't know how this was all suppose to work though. Because if
they were not braking the time and going back to their own time, why
did Landon in Planet of the Apes and Brent in Beneath the Planet of
the Apes both try to conatct earth?????

Hi Luke,
I know what you mean. Taylor lays it on really thick here, if we
take him literally. But Taylor wasn't exactly known for his
humility. I think he's talking the story up for all it's worth. As
Helen said, Taylor is really talking to himself, since Nova can't
understand his words anyway.

Great comic! I am looking forward to reading the next chapter, seems like Dr Zaius is hiding much from ape society that is seen by the books he has in his office. I was surprised by the colors, this would be nice as a graphic novel. Elaine<.html <.html

see how it unfolds! I have a lot more interest in comics since

I can't be of any help on the artistic end (ask Neil at POTADG, I
have NO artistic ability), but I'd love to see it continued.
My thoughts and prayers are with Dan and hopes for a speedy

.htmlWell, to begin with, most of us are interested in a story that will
expose what happened at the heresy trials. It's clear that
the "truth" was stifled in a big way! Eh, hmmm. So, I guess the
story is intriguing. Also, it has a light feel unlike many of the
professional comics that were written way back when. Clearly
something is up in Ape City. Might this be about to reveal the bit
that happens between the end of Planet and the beginning of
Beneath? It's fun, it's written by fans, and I think it has the
possibility of being a good story.

I enjoy them - they are fun.
I would just prefer the style was closer to
Foster, Ploog, and the guy who id the British Annuals. I mean if Pablo
Picasso drew a POTA strip I would say the same thing.
It's about style and personal
preference.
I am not being critical of Dan's style - it
is his choice and that's fine. However I would prefer to see an artist use
a style that looks more like POTA apes. Chopsuey's art in the DG Gallery
is an example. I think even the "return" artists (for most of the strip -
excluding style changes) did not get it right. That's because they wanted
to get a style that allowed them to draw the apes quicker more than anything
else I think.
However I think Jeff's Veetus is perfect for
what it is too - a "send up" style SHOULD be COMICAL. I love those strips
Jeff - hope there are more coming!
I think the "serious" stuff should be as
close to real as possible. Again, this is just my opinion. Everyone
else is entitled to their own opinion, as I should be entitled to mine.
Nobody is "right". However if people ask for opinions, then thy can expect
to get opinions. I don't think anybody wants a sugar coated lie do
they?

satisfy everyone. I know some didn't think the style was consistant
with what was presented about ape culture seen in Planet and
Beneath. But others felt is was undeniably Zira's property.
Well my theory goes as follows. We all know that Cornelius was an
Archaeologist. Surely his trip to the Forbidden Zone was not the one
and only dig he ever went on. Maybe in an earlier dig somewhere
else, he found the carpetbag in a sealed chamber or perhaps a time
capsule. Since the it was not an artifact of high scientific
interest, he gave the carpetbag to Zira who lovingly restored it.
Thus, while not consistant with Ape culture it was a treasured
possesion of Zira's.

antique, and extra special because Cornelius had found it. That

Well, that's my theory. What does everyone think?
I think that bag of her's is as big as a timecapsule... It couldn't be held in one!!!
Anyway, I don't believe in the sealed vault theory... Who in their right mind would preserve something like that, rather than using the "sealed vaults" to contain something valuable or scientific... And if the bag was hypothetically sealed in an airtight/vacuum sealed vault (like the projector in "The Legacy") it wouldn't need to be restored, it would be in the condition it was in when placed into it...
I just don't buy it... I mean Cornelius was lucky to have found what he did in the cave they were in in PLANET... He probably never made it far enough to have reached any ruins of Man... (By that I mean he never was able to explore the ruined cities, because if he did, he would have found a treasure trove of goods... Things which would have made the things found in the cave pale by comparison... And what he would have found would not have included badly chosen bags from the props department...)

consider a few things. Timecapsules can come in many different sizes
for one. Also, it doesn't have to be something from a major human
city. It could be something from a small rural town. (Thus, not in
the Forbidden Zone.) Maybe one that around cira 1900 was celebrating
the centenial of its founding. The residents of the town put in
several innocuous items that represented their daily life including
the carpetbag. They then buried the timecapsule intending for it to
be dug up for the town's bicentenial in 2000. But either the town
died in the '30s depression or it was destroyed in the late-20th
century nuclear war.
Either way the timecapsule was forgotten about until Cornelius dug
it up 2000 years later.

It's a good theory-as good as my "possession of Stewart's" if not
better.

Hi John,
In the shooting script Lucius asks "Those scarecrows... who put
them up?" To which Zira replies, "The hunt club."
"To scare off humans?"
To scare us too, we're entering the Forbidden Zone now."
There don't appear to be any scarecrows in the cornfields so
they would indeed appear to be for marking borders - not for crop
protection.

You
make some good points and my theory is a bit of a stretch. But consider a
few things. Timecapsules can come in many different sizes for one. Also,
it doesn't have to be something from a major human city. It could be
something from a small rural town. (Thus, not in the Forbidden Zone.)
Maybe one that around cira 1900 was celebrating the centenial of its
founding. The residents of the town put in several innocuous items that
represented their daily life including the carpetbag. They then buried the
timecapsule intending for it to be dug up for the town's bicentenial in
2000. But either the town died in the '30s depression or it was destroyed
in the late-20th century nuclear war. Either way the timecapsule was
forgotten about until Cornelius dug it up 2000 years later.
You folks are amazing! You've made me think about POTA and its spawns in
ways I never have before- these flights into fancy really make my
imagination work overtime!

Thanks James. OK, a bit about me. I am 36 years old and I first saw the TV
Series of POTA when they re-ran them in the late 70's. I found the concept of
Apes ruling our Planet in the future a very interesting one. I have always
been inspired by music and TV that is innovative, and I looked upon POTA as
such.
The first film I saw was "Conquest" when it came out in the cinema. This
was'nt exactly by choice and I did'nt actually know that it was a carry on from
other films.
I went to Boarding School and they took us to the cinema to see a film every
now and again, that is how I got to see it, and I really enjoyed it, even
though I did'nt know the whole background of the story. I suppose this is my
fave film, due to the nostalgic feel it has for me.

I sure will! Thanks :-)

I wish I did have some, but sadly I hav'nt, but if I come across any in the
future I will scan them in for you.

.htmlWell it's good to have you aboard. And I can relate to what you say
about Conquest. Although I saw all the films when they were first
released, due to the ending of Escape, Conquest was the first I had
to anticipate and wait for.
BTW we have a number of members from the UK mainly in Londan. What
part are you from?

There's a trading card that reflects this:
Just to remind everyone, including the new member, the full
set of 1968 Topps cards are available in the Art & Info section of the group
website. The full Archives set is there too including all the special chase
cards in addition to the core 90 card set.

Cards from the Burton film were provided to me by James and will be
added as soon as I can make/find the time to put them up.

.htmlThanks but the credit for the 2001 cards should really go to Glen. I
had hoped to include them here but we ran out of space. I'm glad
that they'll soon have a home on Hunter's wonderful site.

.htmlSammy Davis also owned the original statue of the Lawgiver (a gift
from Jacobs) and it was in display in his backyard until his death.
Jacobs was very close with many of the Rat Pack members and I think
was even the press agent for a few of them. I believe that in Peter
Lawford's biography it's stated that the first person Lawford called
the day of Marilyn Monroe's death was Arthur Jacobs.
Jacobs first film "What a Way to Go!" is considered an unofficial
Rat Pack film since Shirley Maclaine and Dean Martin both star in
it. (Shirley was considered an honorary member of the pack in those
days.) The film is even discussed in the book "The Rat Pack".
