I also heard some stories about
two 2001 ape costumes being stolen, some kind of industrial spy
between "2001" and "POTA". I think Chambers and Freeborn have two
different sollutions for two differents problems.

That story is bogus bunk and I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't repeat it here!  It's an insult to the memory of John Chambers.

Besides AMoktime, has anybody seen the SIdeshows in stores? and only comic/figure stores or are they at regular chain stores like Media Play or Tower Records? I'm getting them all from Sideshow but am hoping to pick up a second set gradually.

Ray <ursus3978@...> wrote:

I just got the Sideshow Soldier Ape today (the regular version).
I think he looks great. The head sculpt looks very accurate to me
although some of the details like the facial wrinkles have been
softend from the prototype sculpt that is pictured on the front of
the box.
I picked him up in a comic book store (Amok Time on Long Island, NY)
and I got to pick through a couple of them to find the best one. You
can see a hint of his molars on the right side of his mouth. Some
figures had those teeth painted more promiently than others and
looked a little funny.
The boots look great and are complete with the buckles on the sides.
His leather-like tunic can be removed and he has a full shirt on
underneath. This will make it possible to make a cusom Julius figure.

The gloves are interesting. He has black pleather "cuffs" that taper
at the wrist and molded glove hands to give the illusion of a
gauntlet. The effect works pretty well. They took the time to sculpt
a seem on the inner part of the glove, around the thumb, where it's
less likely to be seen, but neglected to sculpt the seems on the back
of the hand.
The rifle is beautiful. Very detailed. The bolt even pulls back to
reveal an empty chamber.
The club is nice. Maybe a little too long? I'm not sure.
I was a little dissapointed in the horizontal seems on the tunic and
gloves. They aren't raised at all, just two lines of stitching.
I mean, if the crappy Hasbro Gorillas could have raised seems, then
Sideshow could have done it.

For me the worst part of the set is the bandolier. The color looks
all wrong to me (too tan) and it's made from a very cheap material.
It's too bad because the black sculpted "wallets" look great.
I made my own bandolier from some dark brown pleather and used
the "wallets" and "buttons" from the Sideshow bandolier. This looked
much better to me. He now matches the color scheme of the Medicom
Soldier Ape. If I ever get a chance, I'll try and post some pictures.

I put the General's helmet from the Hasbro Ursus on him to see how it
would look. Not too bad. It's a tight fit and it's sculpted so that
the back, bottom edge splays out a little, but if you can push it
down on his head far enough, it's not too noticeable.
So, if they don't get around to making an Ursus, it may be possible
to customize one.

I haven't seen the Exclusive version of the Soldier Ape yet, but I
hear that it's kind of rip off for what you get. I think I can make a
whistle out of some sculpey clay and there is a pole w/a looped
string from a recent G.I.Joe set- "Secret of the Savage Swamp" or
something like that, that can be the "man catcher".

POTA TV was replaced by an hour action drama called "Khan" I believe...it was a spinoff of "Hawaii 5-0" starring a supporting character from that show. I boycotted it.....!

James <JamesA1102@...> wrote:

The POTA series only lasted half a season. Unfortunately it was a
victim of network politics. Fred Silverman never wanted the show but
it was forced on him by William Paley's wife. The original time
period was to be Tuesdays at 8PM. However in the Spring of 1974 it
was moved to Fridays at 8PM.

CBS had not had a hit show in the Friday 8PM time period for a
number of years. The two sitcoms that had premiered there in the
Fall of '73 had both failed. But the mid-season replacement 'Good
Times' (a spin-off from 'Maude' and 'All in the Family') had held
its own up against 'Sanford & Son'. 'Chico & the Man' was a new show
for NBC in the Fall of '74 in the 8:30 slot and had a lot of buzz
around it since Freddie Prinze was a hot comic at the time.

The logic of switching POTA's & 'Good Times' time slots was
that 'Good Times' and 'Sanford & Son' appealed to the same ethinc
audience; thus, why spilt that audience. The POTA films had done
well on Fridays, so the TV series was likely to do the same.
So 'Good Times' was moved to the Tuesday 8PM time period,
against 'Happy Days' which had yet to take off as a hit, and the
POTA TV series was moved to Fridays.

While the series did not do well in overall ratings it did very well
with children & teens. But it did not do well with adults,
particularly Adults over 50. CBS at the time didn't feel children
and teens were an attactive audience and went after older Adults (a
decision they are still regreting to this day), thus the POTA TV
series was canceled. The series was replaced with two forgettable
sitcoms that also lasted less than a full season.

Now the question is would the POTA series had done better against
'Happy Days'. 'Good Times' beat it for the first year but then 'Happy
Days' exploded during the '75-'76 TV season. 'Good Times' continued
to limp along for several years, being shuffled around the CBS
schedule starting in 1976, losing audience each & every year till it
was eventually canceled at in the spring of 1979. (Who knows if POTA
had been a hit and forced 'Happy Days' to be canceled, we might have
been spared 'Laverne & Shirley', 'Joanie love Chachi' and numerous
other terrible spin-offs.)

CBS continued to struggle to find a hit for the Friday 8PM slot for
years. Even moving MASH in the fall of 1974 to that slot did no
good. In 1977 CBS scheduled Wonder Woman there to moderate success
mostly due to Redd Foxx walking out of Sanford & Son and Freddie
Prinze committing suicide. Wonder Woman lasted two years in the slot
and was followed there by the Incredible Hulk which was also a
moderate success. CBS didn't have a true hit on Fridays at 8 until
it moved the Dukes of Hazzard, which was already an established hit,
there in 1981.

Now if you look at Burke & Virdon they do resemble Bo & Luke Duke.
So maybe if they gave the astronauts a suped up car, Urko a dopey
deputy, had Zaius wear a white suit and put Galen in cut-offs; the
TV series might have been more successful.

It's good you know it's a fake story.  I read someplace that Chambers thought 2001 was a piece of crap.  I've also read that Chambers didn't start working on the makeup for APES until January 1967.  By that time, most of 2001 had been shot (in 1966) and was in postproduction.  We have Kubrick to blame for this story.  He saw APES as a rival to his film, something stealing his limelight, and in fact APES got better reviews at first and made a lot more money right away than 2001.

As Chambers once told Arthur P. Jacobs, "Tell Kubrick to go f**k himself!"

By the way, 2001 is my second favorite movie next to PLANET OF THE APES, but this makeup story is bullshit.

I saw PA68 for the first time in a theatre only two years ago, at a
repertory theatre in Toronto. There were about 25 of us in the
cinema. I also remember a few (but only a few) people guffawing at
some of Heston's lines, especially his monologue in the AF1 space
ship. The line "I feel lonely" (which I think was well played) sent
one guy into giggles. The humour was lost on me. The copy of the
film had blips and pops, and the colour was a bit overexposed.
Nonetheless, I finally got to see a classic POTA movie in the
theatre and it was great!

I have enjoyed hearing the group's opinions on the Sideshow
Collectibles action figuare series. I now have a few of them.
Yesterday, I received my Astronaut Taylor figure. I have to say I'm
disappointed in this one. The head sculpt does not look like Heston.
I'm not quite sure who it reminds me of. I actually looks a bit like
one of the lead characters from Anderson's original Thunderbirds
series.

The doll appears too tall and leggy. The body frame is so lanky that
the figure looks a bit emaciated. The character's arms pivot left
and right, but there is no bend at the elbow.

I'm not too impressed with this guy. On the bright side, my Lawgiver
is en route!

Push the arm harder to make it bend, it will give.
Now, as to the likeness, I think they did a very good job and to me
he looks just like Heston in the opening scene of Planet of the
Apes. But, I do think the figure does look quite pale and the
sleeves of his uniform are too short. But all in all, I am very
pleased with him.
I think this version is MUCH superior to the Medicom Astronaut
Taylor as far as looking like Heston. But, the Sideshow figure is
way to skinny.

In all fairness I think that the Fugative formula helped kill the
show as outlined in Behind the Planet of the Apes. It was a common
out for action shows that the writers really didn't know what else
to do with and with the exception of Incredable Hulk they all
suffered a similar fate.

Another problem was that key elements like 'Ape shall never kill
ape' went out the window and that it occured in its own seperate
little timelime just as had the cartoon series.

Yeah, we can all have POTA marathons any time we wanted.

By the way, one of the authors of POTA REVISITED, Larry Landsman, works at the Sci-Fi Channel now and that's one of the reasons you've been seeing more APES there recently.

Subject: [Planet of the Apes] Re: Side Shows next Ape Line?
.html
Thankfully, Sideshow is a relatively small toy company. Mattel and
Hasbro sometimes cater to niche fan groups but tend to over produce
for the line... inevitably choking retailers with it (Who can forget
Hasbro's Apes line... I bought all of the 12" figures for $6 on
clearance!)So Sideshow can manufacture product in small quantities
that can be tailor made for niche groups like Ape fans, Highlander
fans, Buffy fans etc. I think the only lines that truly bombed for
them so far has been "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits"
lines. The fans for those shows were too small to maintain the line.
The last two offerings were combined in a two pack to get rid of them.

I think that initially Sideshow thought that the fan base (or the
merchandise-buying faction of the fan base) for "Planet of the Apes"
was much longer than it was. They had the expectation that the line
would go through the roof. If you will notice, they announced an
amazing 11 items to the "Planet of the Apes" line (2 Zaiuses, 3
Taylors, 2 Gorillas, Cornelius, Zira, Nova and the Lawgiver
statue)... probably the biggest roll out in their history! Usually
they announce anywhere between two to four at a time. For their X-
Files line, they just announce Mulder and Scully. I think that the
roll out for Apes showed their belief in the strength of the line.

However, now I think their expectations are now in line with the
reality of the situation. I think there are just as many people
buying the Apes as there are people buying thier Bond and Classic
Monsters figures. Sideshow has promised a good roll out again with
the Ape line this month at Toy Fair. They have already started with
the announcement of the "Beneath" version of Taylor. So I think an
Ursus, Brent and a Mutant are a lock.

I think we will see plenty of Ape figures in the years to come.
Sideshow reps have stated that their toy lines may vary in the number
of items released during a given year (their Buffy line was on hiatus
for a year or so and is now busier than ever!) but none of their toy
lines never die completely... given that there is still interest in
it. Heck I've even heard there is a possiblity of a Rod Serling
figure to go with the Twight Zone line. Geez, I'd buy one and pose
him with my Apes... perhaps even leaning him up against the Lawgiver
statue!!!

To show Sideshow that you like their line is to simply BUY MORE
APES!!!

Not true... In the original PLANET, they spoke of "hanging for high treason", and even Cornelius mentions "getting his head chopped off"... They speak/spoke of "capital punishment" in the original movie, just as they spoke of it in the TV series... Being an enemy of the state "is" justification to kill the states enemy, it's not just "killing for the sake of killing"

I was going to let someone else field this question, but . . .
In light of the Recent Research SNAFU, I would like to take
this opportunity to give a free lesson to the research challenged.

When ever a question arises about something,

1st.  Go to www.Google.com

2nd.  Enter the key words you believe will yield the
best search results.

3rd. If you're looking for a PIC click on Images  at the
top of the page.

4th.  If you are looking for the best price on a product,
click on Froogle at the top of the page.

I'm not trying to be rude to those of you who think
I'm being insultingly simplistic.  But I do think that
people should do the minimum on their own rather
than relying on others, or before they post false or
misleading statements.

I sincerely hope this helps.

that shot in the film would get a major reaction.

I agree with you there. I would rather have seen something like
Burke and Virdon settling down in an Ape village, keeping their
identities secret, yet trying to push Ape society in a more
progressive direction.

Again, I agree. They really didn't pick up any of the lore of the
films and went in their own direction. Things like the Sacred
Scrolls and the Lawgiver are never mentioned. Had the series
continued they may have gotten around to it.

However, whether the TV & Movie series take place in seperate
timelines or universes can be an either/or proposition. Since all
the films, save Escape, take place on the East Coast and the TV
series on the West Coast isolates the TV series from interfering
with the events of the movies. Thus, it may or may not be part of
the same timeline or universe.

I saw Planet on a big screen at Film Forum in downtown Manhattan some years ago (maybe 8 or 9). They used to have a sci-fi film festival every summer, which they have discontinued. PotA was shown on a double-bill with Fantastic Voyage. I don't recall any inappropriate laughter during Planet, but boy were there howls during Voyage.

Glad you like them. I have to say that a major part of why they look so convincing is Neil's artwork. He absolutely nailed the look of the original card art, as well as the wrapper art.

The hi-res files on Hunter's site are at 300dpi (the display versions are only 100dpi) and are arranged 9 cards per page. I used a photo inkjet printer and printed the fronts on glossy photo paper. The backs I printed on 67# cover/card stock. I used a spray adhesive to put the two sides together and then cut them down into cards.

In Joe Russo's book he quotes from Rod Serling's original series
concept. I believe the mutants were include. I also think the idea
was for there to be many types of Ape/Human societies for the
Astronauts and Galen to visit.

But of course different cultures and societies would require
different clothes and sets and props. All of which would pump up the
budget.

IMO one of the weaknesses of the TV series was that every Ape/Human
village or farm encountered was indentical to the Ape/Human or farm
encountered the week before just with a different set of problems to
be solved. 'Tomorrow's Tide' is a slight exception to this but still
only slight.

Additionally, I've often wondered if the reason why the TV series

There is also such a thing as word of mouth and word of eyes. As the
Sideshow figures make it into the world and people see them, the demand
might increase (if they're good). But Sideshow's choices are getting very
boring, just like Rittenhouse. We don't need another Taylor. Where's Julius

Yesterday's L.A. Times had a feature article on Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (his "The Corpse Bride" is also coming out around Halloween - - it's going to be a Burton year). It mentioned that Burton knew he was in dangerous territory by remaking POTA (he considers the original a "classic") but he doesn't feel that way about "Willy Wonka", he didn't particularly like it and doesn't feel a lot of pressure about making it. It's going to be more like the book.
It also said that Burton is a risky prospect for a big budget movie and that his POTA killed Fox's enthusiasm for continuing the franchise. I think they just said that generally, they didn't actually ask Fox. But when "Chocolate Factory" comes out I think it will reignite the discussion about POTA and Zanuck or someone will give us an update if there's a chance of another one (which I think they would do differently since they KNOW people didn't like Burton's). Burton got off kinda easy with his previous movie "Big Fish" but the big budget on "Factory" will bring back memories of POTA for interviewers. - - - Jeff

I have copies of the Serling scripts and they are full of verbose, long-winded speeches by humans, apes, and mutants. Good for classic TZ eps but not for a series that relied on visuals like Apes TV.
Having watched 7 or 8 eps today on Sci Fi I agree that the farms-and the stories- were too similar. This is what killed the series in my opinion (much as I enjoyed the show).

The hi-res files (available on Hunter's site) are arranged in 9-card panels that can be printed on 8-1/2 x 11 photo/card paper. The individual card dimensions are 3-1/2" wide by 2-1/2" high.

Subject: Happy Anniversary Planet of the Apes!!!
    .html
As Rory has already stated tomorrow it the anniversary of the
premiere of the original Planet of the Apes.

Well we love to celebrate anniversaries around here and give members
a chance to win the gift.

For this anniversary one lucky member will win a ANSA patch and a
set of the Return DVDs. If you don't have these already you're in
for a real treat. If you do it can't hurt to have an extra copy.

Anyway here's the contest. It is a variation on the old Kevin Bacon
game. The goal is to get selected cast members of the original to
selected cast members of the 2001 remake in as few steps as
    possible. Specifically:

    Charlton Heston to Mark Wahlberg
    Roddy McDowall to Tim Roth
Kim Hunter to Helena Bonham Carter
    Maurice Evans to Paul Giamatti
    Linda Harrison to Estella Warren

Now here's the catch, you can't use any POTA film nor can you use TV
series, TV-movies or documentaries. Only feature films will be
    acceptable as answers.

Actually it's pretty easy. Each "chain" can be completed in 3 steps.
Some in 2 steps. The goal is to do it as few steps as possible. Like
golf, the person with the lowest cumulative score will win (15 being
the maximum highest score). All answers must be verifiable on IMDB.

You can enter by clicking this link:
    http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Contest.htm or by
clicking the banner on the Yahoo Home Page.

    Good Luck!

Printing, gluing and cutting up sets would seriously cut into the time I'd have to make the sets for the remaining three films (plus other projects). Also, I'm not sure how Rittenhouse would view my selling these.

It's funny... the two seminal movie-going experiences when I was
young was the "Apes" films and "Willy Wonka". Seems Burton is bent
    on re-imagining my whole childhood.

    Maybe it never happened?

that Burton knew he was in dangerous territory by remaking POTA (he
considers the original a "classic") but he doesn't feel that way
about "Willy Wonka", he didn't particularly like it and doesn't feel
a lot of pressure about making it. It's going to be more like the
    book.
    > It also said that Burton is a risky prospect for a big budget
movie and that his POTA killed Fox's enthusiasm for continuing the
franchise. I think they just said that generally, they didn't
actually ask Fox. But when "Chocolate Factory" comes out I think it
will reignite the discussion about POTA and Zanuck or someone will
give us an update if there's a chance of another one (which I think
they would do differently since they KNOW people didn't like
Burton's). Burton got off kinda easy with his previous movie "Big
Fish" but the big budget on "Factory" will bring back memories of
    POTA for interviewers. - - - Jeff

I agree, the TV show did sometimes feel like 'Village of the Apes". They had a
whole planet to explore and could have shown the effects of man's downfall
on a GLOBAL scale. I think that's what Serling hinted at in his proposal. Still,
this was the 70's and the kind of budgets that some of today's shows enjoy
just wasn't available. I think they did very well with what they had but the
potential was (and still is) enourmous.

I once suggested that this might have been the reasoning behind the 2001 re-
imaginging too - But, as Jeff quite rightly pointed out Fox own POTA lock stock
and barrell and can do with it whatever they want.

Some people like the 2001 version best of all. It's nothing to do with the
quality in front and behind the lens - perhaps more to do with the time and
      circumstance of the viewer?

Beneath was the first ape movie I ever saw and one of the very first movies I
ever saw in a cinema. The original is undeniably a superior piece of film-
making but as the lead character says in 'True Romance' (or something like)

"Apocalypse now... that's a film . Coming home in a body bag 3... Now
      THAT"S a Movie!"

In terms of what's in it for Ape fandom, as opposed to the esoterics
of great film making, I think Beneath comes out top. You get Ursus,
with gorillas marching with menace, you get that amphitheatre scene,

I would agree, Planet is a far superior film to any of the sequels.
In many ways it is one of the finest films ever made. On the other
hand, Beneath is far more fun and because of all the reasons that
      you mention.

The core reason for the difference, I think, is that they are two
      very different types of films.

Planet is very talky and deep philosophical film that had a specific
message, essentially a drama with a few action sequences thrown in
for good measure. It is also a very character driven film the Taylor
      at the center.

Beneath on the other hand is a full blown action adventure. As Jeff
once said, 'its a chase film'. There is no real message other than
the standard '60s apocalyptic pessimism. Whereas in Planet the
characters moved the plot along, in Beneath the characters are swept
up in events that are really beyond their control. But for the most
part it is just a romp with monkeys, mutants, astronauts and
      doomsday bombs.
