The budget obviously played a role in the lack of variety in the tv series. Like the original Star Trek, a limited budget is difficult to work with. Some villages would be different because not all of ape and human culture would be the same. This is a good avenue for a variety of stories. Elaine<.html <.html

Since we are celebrating Planet's Anniversary today I found some
rare pics that I'd like to share.
Heston relaxing on the set.
I wonder what a cameraman was doing down there.
The infamous still with Nova.
I can almost here Roddy saying, 'Well, I never!'.
The deleted causeway scene.
Destined to be a future Home Page pic.
BTW how does everyone like the current Home Page
Pic?
All these rare stills and many others are available in the Files
Section in the Rare Shots folder of course.

The show was only made 4 years after Beneath. If they had saved any
prosthetics from the film they would have still been usable.

THE SOLAR SAIL
The first spacecraft propelled by a solar sail is to be launched on 1 March
2005. Cosmos 1 will ride into space on a ballistic missile launched from a
submarine in the Barents Sea, north of Norway and Russia. Once in orbit, the
sail's tubes will inflate to form its windmill-like structure of eight triangular sails.
The pressure of individual photons of light from the Sun on the sails will then
cause the spacecraft to move. The pressure is enough to change the
spacecraft's velocity, while the blades can be turned to reflect sunlight at
different angles and alter its direction, much like a yacht in the wind. Not all
scientists are convinced it will work. The late Thomas Gold believed that the
sail would violate the laws of physics. He thought it would simply reflect all the
energy so it wouldn't actually go anywhere. At least we'll soon know who was
right.
I hope Jinn and Phyliss are paying attention.

have been theorizing about for centuries. It was very forward
thinking by Boulle to include it in the novel. Not being a 'science
fiction' writer like Asimov or Heinlein, Boulle was really on the
cutting edge of scientific theory.

This issue is full of everything I disliked about the "Terror"

with the monsters is more Star Wars. While all that stuff is fun, it

ventured in to the Forbidden Zone, I had hoped they would encounter
the Beneath/Battle mutants. Instead we got bloby little mutants with
ray guns and giant talking brains. As I said, and this is just
personal taste, I found that more Star Trek than POTA.
In many ways with the heros exploring various Ape & Human cultures,
the comic is more in-line with Rod Serlings original concept for the
TV series. However, and again my personal opinion, I wish they had
stuck more with exploring the established Ape culture as they had in
the first few chapters.

.htmlIt really is a question of personal taste. I think part of that is
defined by how we each first became introduced to POTA. For some it
was the comics, some it was the TV series and others, like me, it
was the films. That first exposure seems to define what they like or
dislike in the concept.
My first exposure was the original film in 1968. I first became
aware of it when our downstairs neighbor, who was a secretary as
FOX, brought home a box of the trading cards. I think we wound up
with two full sets and sold off the extras. Finally after waiting
for what seemed forever, the film came to our local theater. It was
on a double bill with 'One Million BC'. We had to sit through that
before getting to Planet. I remember my mom commenting something
like, 'four hours at the movies and only the apes talked'.
The local theater that ran Planet was slated to close after Planet's
run there. However, the film did so well is was held over for many
weeks and the theater was able to stay open. For years, Planet was
known in the neighborhood as the film that saved the Walker. All the
other films played there at some point in their release schedule as
well as the "Go Ape!" festival. The place stayed open until the
late '80s. I think the last movie I saw there was 'Aliens'.
Now "Aliens on the Planet of the Apes" might be an interesing idea.
Of course it wouldn't really be POTA to us. But it might be if was
someone's first exposure to POTA.

I thought the mutants looked liked cheesy, bad 1950's era, sci-fi

taste, at least for POTA. I wish they had explored more of the
established POTA universe as laid out in the movies and TV show.
That being said, I do think there was a lot of positive aspects to
the Terror series. First and foremost, for me, was the beautiful
comic art by Mike Ploog. True, he at first drew the gorillas with
bangs, but he eventually nailed it pretty good. Issue #8 really
stands out in my mind. I think the art was reproduced from his
original pencils and it looked beautiful.
And I also liked some of the story elements that Terror introduced
such as showing us our first glimpse of the long ignored fourth
member of the great apes - a gibbon.
I thought that hidden bunker in Mount Rushmore was pretty interesting
along with the Presidential audio tape that trys to fill in some of
the post Conquest story.
The knife wielding gypsy (I forgot his name) was an interesting
character in that he hints at life on other continents on the Planet
of the Apes. I wish they had explored that more. How did ape
societies develope in other countries?
Terror was not pure POTA for me, but it was usually entertaining.

All that is basic Apes, (there used to be a band called Basic Ape) but when
you have talking brains you're getting a bit too Star Trekie. I say keep
it real. Telepathic Mutants was even a bit much. But when you have
talking brains then talking Apes aren't anything special. No stretch
there. You may as well give them a starship and make them just
another species in Star Fleet. Maybe they can fight Wookies and Ewoks

backer cards for figures (but repro boxes is more my specialty). If no one
realizes what I'm talking about check here (though the site really needs to
be updated)
http://www.reboxyourmego.com
The price depends on how many prints it takes to make the set of cards. Each
box or backer card represents 2 pages of printing and then subsiquent
assembly and I charge $15 per box or card ($17 for the Planet Of The Apes
Mego Box repros, not yet on the site, because of the illustrated insert.
Pretty soon I will post about the long road to getting what I needed to
repro all 4 VERY RARE Mego Ape boxes).
So if each of the 10 high rez files from Hunter (excluding the wrapper file)
represents a page of printing it would be equal to five boxes or cards at
$75. But I would also apply the 10% discount I apply to those that get 5
boxes or cards so it would be $67.50 plus the shipping which would be $4.00.
The cards would be be constructed just like my backer cards with a semi
gloss front and a matte finish back.
Best,
Mike

I doubt that they did. I was living in upstate New York at the time, and saw the PLANET/BENEATH double feature in Watertown, NY, which is north of Syracuse -- and that's pretty far north. I think the double feature mostly played the neighborhood theatre and drive-in circuit.

I am vindicated! The first time I remember more than one Ape film at a time

Hmmm... I may have been mistaken.
Maybe it was the Buckaroo Banzai
group talking about William Conrad.
But they were also talking about
Roddy McDowall, so . . .
<<Listen to Roddy McDowell's reading of L. Ron Hubbards Final
Blackout, they just stuck in some music and sound effects, especially the rat
a tat of machine guns. Its one of Roddy's best acting jobs, and turned
a fairly average story into a real classic. One of the greatest
of all radio dramas has William Conrad of Cannon etc. stuck on an
island lighthouse attacked by an army of rats with only a few other actors
doing some talking. >> <.html <.html

I'm not trying to be Mr. Negative here, but I forwarded the link in Hunter's site to Joe Russo and his reaction was that it was cool what you guys have done BUT the images are simply freeze-frames from the DVD. He would rather see photos never seen before like those from the Rittenhouse Taylor cards. I have to say I agree. Russo has quite a collection of stills from BENEATH, many in color.
But more importantly for me I'd like to see done first an expanded PLANET set, with shots not seen in the original 44 card series.
Since PLANET was released in 1968 I think an expanded PLANET set should be 68 cards. The photos for the cards should be better reproductions than the original Topps cards, but done in the same style. I think Rittenhouse talked about doing this, but this is more exactly what I'd like to see.
Just a thought.

You know what would be a great idea is a card set from Rittenhouse based on the original "By Popular Demand! Two APES for the Price of One!" PLANET/BENEATH double feature. It could feature rare photos and behind the scene stuff from the first two movies, a mega set of like a hundred cards, the first card of which would be a reproduction of the PLANET/BENEATH double feature 1-sheet. If it sold well, then a sequel set could be a GO APE collection of stuff from the last three films.

Everything I've read so far points to an entirely CGI creation.
(based on a physical performance by Andy 'Gollum' Serkis) He
(Kong) was recently described by Jackson in SFX magazine as a
"20ft tall, bull-gorilla, very ancient and battle scarred."

True, but Henry Fonda is no William Windom.
And no he's not a bad actor, but in that episode

WOMEN! Behold the new paradox, the Planet of the Women!
The PotA DG http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/ is now
under
the control of the women of the group. This is not intended to be a
malicious take over, but something that will be fun for all!
For quite a while the women of the DG have been taking a lot of slack
from the illustrious males in the group. It is meant in good fun,
but
sometimes the funniest part is the payback!
Today we are taking a stand and reclaiming the group. Come on and
join us as we invade The Planet of the Men and when it's all back to
normal, you'll find yourself a member of the greatest little POTA
group on the Web!
Welcome to the Revolution!

.htmlFor each of the five original POTA films, FOX produced and distributed promotional "Heralds" (fictional newspapers) that local theaters distributed to advertise the release of each new film. However, no Herald was ever produced for to promote the TV series.
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the series: Dave Ballard, Mark Rogers, Kassidy Rae, Glen Scheetz, and James Aquila brought together their creative talents and produced a four page TV version of Fox's "Heralds", as they imagined it would have been back in the summer of 1974.
It is my pleasure to let you know that you can now download a PDF of this amazing piece of work from either Kassidy's site or Hunter's site:

Great news Greg, thanks. I'd also like to thank Dave, Mark, Kass
& Glen for allowing me to be part of this project and for being great
to work with as well as great human beings.
Everyone should be on the look out for a special offer to get your
own printed copy of the Herald free of charge.
