Marvel UK issue 25 is now available to download from Hunter's site. This week we have another chapter of the infamous Apeslayer! story. No major article or interview this week, but there is a letter column, a Fan Page feature on two women who wrote to Ron Harper and James Naughton asking if they could start U.K. fan clubs for the actors and got personal replies back, and a full-page photo of Galen.

Actually it's in August, though no date has been set.
If you've ever seen Hunter Goes To Hollywood, he'd
planned this since the 70's.  There's even a scene
of him in a funeral parlor looking at coffins.  And
an animation at the end of his ashes being fired
from a mortar in the palm of a giant Gonzo Fist
and raining down over the valley at The Owl Farm.
The latest new stories have the fist at 53 feet,
atop a one hundred foot high pillar.  Anita says
his last wish will be expensive, but worth it!

I truly wish there was a way to heal old wounds and get all the Planet
of the Apes fans united. When Star Wars or Star Trek fans feud
amongest themselves, it doesn't matter because there are millions of
them to divide but when Apes fans do this, every person counts and you
feel their loss. With such a small pool of truly talented people
working together instead of fighting maybe we could get Planet of the
Apes the respect that it deserves as a pioneer in the realm of Sci-Fi.

Nice sentiment, but unrealistic -- the getting more respect part, I mean.  PLANET OF THE APES has always been a minor cult and it's only going to get smaller with time.  We who saw it as kids in the sixties are on the edge of becoming old farts and you kids of the seventies will soon be joining us.  Eventually we'll all be dead and there will be no one left on the planet who'll even ever remember watching the TV shows when they were originally broadcast.  The sands of time will wash over Planet of the Apes and only the remnants of what once was will remain, collecting dust someplace.

On the other hand... I could be wrong.

I totally agree. It doesn't make any sense to have Apes fans fighting among themselves while we could be working together to get more Apes on television and movies. There are a bunch of talented writers and artists in this group and Neil is one of the best artist I have seen drawing POTA.  I would like to see this group be as large as the Star Wars and Star Trek fan clubs. We can be just as large as those groups, maybe even larger

John,

It's a nice dream you have, but I believe it's a highly unlikely one...

The "leader" of the other main group has destroyed too many people's
good will for them to do much on the olive branch front, I'm
afraid...And, he proves constantly how he does not want to make
amends, either...

For instance, just today he had to post on his dwindling site a hate-
slam at me, complete with the old lies, and I haven't had any contact
with him in over eight months!...

Sorry to say, it will probably never see the light of day...

Personally I hope Burton's Blunder will be just
that.  A minor blip on the radar that fades with
time.  And a proper POTA remake will help to
erase it even more quickly.  A second chapter
will only strengthen it.  Better to start from
scratch.  If they have to, then get a new Leo.

Dear Dr Zaius,

In my experience the vast majority of POTA fans are indeed happy to work together
for the common good - and are, in fact, doing so right now with such ongoing
projects as Kassidy's and Hunter's magnificent websites, The Chronicles and Scrolls
fanzines, The 'lessons from the Lawgiver' and the Argentinian comic translations -

This very group has a steady trickle of additions to it's file and photo sections by
fans happy to share and communicate thier passion.

It's true that there aren't very many of us - and never will be - but for the most part
we are a dedicated and enthusiastic bunch.

I've been wondering how old Cornelius & Zira were supposed to be in the
films. Roddy & Kim were in their 40s when they played the characters
but that really doesn't mean much.
Zira does comment that she's spent half her life studying humans. My
guess would be that's her adult life, which assume a human-like
development & life span, would begin at 18. Thus, Zira was 36 in
Escape. However, Zaius refers to Cornelius as 'the young ape with a
shovel'. I'm not sure if someone in their mid-30s would have been
characterized as young back then.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Frankly, there are some folks I don't WANT to be united with.  I do my POTA bit when I can and I'm happy at it. Made some good friends who try to restrain themselves from calling me names (most of the time), send a mental Valium brain wave or two out to those who need it, and in general try to skirt the insanity.  I was never here to fight or hate people.

But this Rory person.. who the hell took his gag off????

Suppose we assume that as a child Zira was especially precocious and
actually spent a lot of time observing human behavior. (Personally, I
was actually very into genetics as a young child, breeding and showing
dogs with the advice of a geneticist. Had I continued in that field,
I would have considered that my study of genetics began as a young
girl.) Our modern day chimp reaches maturity at around 15. We could
assume the evolved ape would be similar to our evolved human, reaching
the marrying age at about 18, as you suggest. In my experience, an
Academy is a high school. Is that the highest level of education she
received? If so, she probably married shortly after leaving the
Academy and beginning her career. My guess is she was about 21 or
so. I would think Cornelius would have been around that age, give or
take a bit.

Ummm... just my opinion.

i cant give a clear answer, but i always thought that zaius was one generation older than C&Z (old enough to be their dad)

Zira does comment that she's spent half her life studying humans. My
guess would be that's her adult life, which assume a human-like

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I don't know about all that but I'm in my 30's and you could call me
the young guy with the shovel all you wanted! Besides, Zaius as an
elder spokesman probably refered to everyone younger than him
as "young ape" just like most old bastards refer to you as "young man"
even if your over 30.

I think though very human they were not quite.
Since apes live to about 50 and humans live to
about 70, back then, I'd split the diff, and say they
live to their 60s.  With this adjustment I'd say they
enter the Academy at 15, about  Lucius' age.  In
Japan both high school and college are only 3
years each.  So I'd knock another year off that,
since they don't have much to teach. Even with
specialization in their field it's probably only a
couple years more.  But they were both outstanding
in their fields, so they'd been working long enough
to rise to those positions and start thinking about
getting married and settling down.  Cornelius was
a couple years Zira's senior, so that would put him
at about 24 - 25 and her about 21 - 22.  It's hard
to tell how much time passed from when Taylor
landed to when she had her baby, but I'd say
she was 24 or 25 -- 30 tops.  Taking that into
account her bother/sister must have been
half again as old as her to have had Lucius
be as old as he was.  I'd say he was just out
of school, or just in the Academy, so about 15.
And that she was about 10 when he was born.
But I'd be anxious to her any else's thoughts.

Does anyone know what age apes, specifically chimps,
"go gray"?...That would probably be considered "middle-age"...Since
Zira and Cornelius had no gray hair, they hadn't reached "middle-age"

They were all just given those degrees. Just like Bill Cosby. It
didn't mean much more than that Dr. Zaius wanted them to be working in
the fields they were given degrees in. Dr. Zaius was in control of the
whole ape culture. He played the entire planet like a game of chess.

Yeah. In large families children and grandchildren are often the same

Home Theater Forum did a swell interview with Warner Home Video in March and here's a few DVD tidbits:
It's full steam ahead for the special edition of the original "King Kong", and it turns out they did get an interview with the late Fay Wray. There's also plans for "Son of Kong" and the original "Mighty Joe Young" this winter. "Kong" was Arthur Jacobs' favorite movie and inspired the POTA franchise, so show some respect, you saps!
In 2006 comes a special edition of the last movie Arthur Jacobs' watched, "2001: A Space Odyssey". If this is an elaborate edition, I'll wet my pants!
And in 2006 will be a 2-disc edition of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (Kim Hunter). Finally, at the end of the year will be an edition of (ahem) POTA2001 star Kris Kristopherson's "A Star Is Born" (1976).

They'll start arriving the first part of 2006; they haven't even started sculpting yet.
They will have "blind" packaging (you won't know what figure you're getting, thus you'll have to spend and spend to get the one you want)
They say they can do anything from the first film with "options on the others"; they have likeness rights
The first batch will be 9 - 12 figures
  The message board is:  http://www.palisadestoys.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9300   - - - Jeff

I forgot to mention that Warner Bros. is also planning a new DVD of Heston's classic "Ben Hur", remastered from the original elements. Sounds like a 2-disc set. They are also planning the original "Ben Hur" (1926?). - - - Jeff

That Palisades board is having controversy over that "blind" packaging thing.  http://www.palisadestoys.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42  . I agree, it will probably hurt the line. If someone wants a Zauis they can't just walk into Toys 'R Us and buy a Zauis. They'll buy 3 Ape packages and get two Corneliuses and a Nova. But they wanted Zauis. Do they go back and buy some more to try their luck? Or do they say, "@&%# it! I'm going to collect "Smallville" instead". Or do they trade with Rory, who has 12 Zauises but no Novas?
I was hoping this Palisades stuff would be a way to get POTA back into the mainstream, like their Muppets line. But that doesn't look like the way they're going to go. It will be hard for casual buyers to hook into the line.
Hello? I feel like I'm talking to myself (more than usual). Is anyone here? Oh, I see. The silent treatment. I get it. That's fine. You don't have to talk to me. But I'm not trading my Zauis. Oh, look. I have a booger. - - - Jeff

That'll kill it before it even gets started. No matter what the
price, they're not going to be cheap enough for people to buy them
like that. It was bad enough when it was a $.10 pack of cards when we
were kids (at least it was for me at that age).

I have been reading the discusssion board on this subject and it seems a lot of people out there feel the same way... Hopefully they "will" get the message that blind packaging is NOT the way to go...

Yes Lucius had an interesting family. He was in the advanced or genius

mischievous and his mom was very domineering. Stop me if you've heard

Whew! I spent all morning uploading many many pics of POTA items both fom my
collection and othrs that I'm still looking for on the Planet of the Collecting Yahoo

thought I'd fill it! Here's the address:

You have to join to get in. The pics are all under Photos and some have subalbums

Well, my planet of the Apes obsession is close to religious fanatic
but this guy is counting on someone to be disturbed if they are gonna
pay for this. I thought only Star Trek fans were this gulible.

The one line of dialogue I didn't understand in POTA is Dodge's
statement "The strange luminosity, cloud cover at night, yet there's no
moon." What happened to the moon? It's earth... Why is there no moon?
Or did no moon mean it just wasn't visible? It seemed to me the
only "cheat" in the film to mislead the audience. Thoughts?

That line is a throwaway to mislead the audience or at least keep them from thinking, why didn't Taylor figure out he's on Earth by looking at the night sky.

Now there has to be a moon since without it there wouldn't be an waves on the beach at the end of the film.

I have a personal theory to explain this discrepency. Early during the nuclear war that destroyed mankind's civilization the US developed a protype of the Alpha-Omega bomb. Now an ultimate weapon is no good unless your enemies know you have it and appreciate it's power. So the US demonstrated the device by exploding it on the surface of the moon. That blew off most of the moon's crust creating a ring of small asteroids around the Earth (which accounts for the 'strange luminosity') but left one or two very large chunks of the original moon in orbit (which would provide the gravatational pull needed for tides).

I'm sure this theory is not perfect and there are holes in it. Does
      anyone else have a theory?

funny home page pics, you can access other group resources including
our Internal Website, extensive links collection, POTA Info Databases,

What's a corona (not the beer). Doesn't it do strange luminosity and
stuff like that? Couple it with a lunar eclipse and BANG! Sorry, didn't mean

IMHO, "...that strange luminousity at night..." would probably be
from the residual radiation from the war...Radioactive particulates,
like volcanic particulates, would remain in the stratosphere for
ages..."...yet, there's no moon..." is probably a writers "ploy" to
throw the audience off...The moon was probably not visible, due to
New Moon and cloud cover, during the trek across the desert...
