The
one line of dialogue I didn't understand in POTA is Dodge's statement "The
strange luminosity, cloud cover at night, yet there's no moon." What
happened to the moon? It's earth... Why is there no moon? Or did no moon
mean it just wasn't visible? It seemed to me the only "cheat" in the film
to mislead the audience. Thoughts?
In 1999 an incredible explosion on Moonbase Alpha sent the Moon careening
out of the Earth's orbit for 2 years of ridiculous adventures. As for the waves
at the end the Moon came back rather than live through a THIRD season of
space:1999!

They blew up the Moon Base.
If they didn't how could Martin
Landau be Urko? Wait! That
was Mark Lenard. I always
get those guys mixed up with
John Cassavetes and Ben
Gazara. Much like Glen Ford

What's a corona (not the beer). Doesn't it do strange

Sorry, didn't mean to yell.
No. The corona is around the Sun.
You mean the aurora. But even when
the Moon is in eclipse it should still be
visible to astronauts, if only for the stars
it would block. But with a cloud cover
at night there wouldn't be any stars to
see, or a moon! So how can they say
there isn't one? Answer that if you can!

Doubtful. More likely it was hit by an

.htmlI think I agree about the radiation. That's what I automatically think of whenever I hear the
line... he probably just can't see the moon due to the particulates in the air and the glow is
from the radiation. But I am strangely attracted to James' theory, mainly due to its
creativeness!

If it took them "many days and nights" to
reach the jungle they must have conserved their food, like they did by not
drinking water (they turned it down). Hopefully they ate their ice cream first
so it didn't melt. - - - Jeff

But if there were no moon, there would be no high or low tides.
And Cornelius clearly mentioned not having boats, and that
you couldn't ride along the shore at high tide. No moon, no
tide.
Therefore there is definitely a moon, QED.

I've always liked to think that the moon was destroyed somehow and that part of the reason why the planet was so devastated was because of a meteor shower from the debris of an exploded moon. The "strange luminosity" was reflected light from a ring of debris that then circled the earth.

We usually don't encourage people to use the group as a marketplace
to hawk POTA products, but sometimes something will come along so special we are
willing to make an exception.
These are really wonderful prints and we hope that the artist will
continue the series and do a print for each film and the TV series. For those in
the UK the ordering info is above. For international orders, you can email the

The May 2005 calendar is available for downloading. May is a busy
month in POTA history. There are not only several birthdays but also the
anniversaries of the premieres of both Beneath & Escape.
However, the theme of the calendar reflects the anniversary of the
original novel being published in 1963
The calendar can be downloaded via the link above or by going to
the Calendar folder in the group's Files Section. There's also a full year wall
calendar in that folder contributed by Rory.
And if for even more POTA themed calendars, be sure to check out
the Misc. section of Hunter's website. <.html <.html

I did say that last week. No Moon, No Tides.
And though I'm sure in the original they weren't
thinking mutants, since they hadn't been written yet.
That's as good an explanation as I've heard. Their way
of saying, "Nothing to see here. Move along." For all
we know it was a garden of Eden! And much the desert
itself was an illusion. They had to get their food from
somewhere. Zaius may have been right all along. There
WAS another jungle beyond the Forbidden Zone! It just
that even IF you could cross it without dying of thirst, or
losing your mind, you couldn't see it once you got there.
It just looked like that wall Taylor fell into, or more dessert.
There are mirages in the desert already! A few suggested
mutant ones are easy, especially if you're half sun crazed.

out in the mid '90s?
How is it?
It's hard to tell from the pictures I've seen of it. The front is
vinyl, but is the back of the tunic also vinyl - or cloth?
How is the mask? The facial sculpt looks pretty accurate to the
Chambers makeup but the color looks like a very light grey. The mask
also looks very "tall". Like you need a really long head to fit in it.

I have seen others speculate on this... The thing that makes it not work is this: There were NO mutants in PLANET... The whole "no moon" and the thunder/lightning was supposed to make it have another worldly feel to the film... When PLANET was made, there were no plans for a sequel, so that rules out any ideas of any mutants... Now, that's not to say that from a BENEATH point of view that the atmospheric changes weren't "illusions"... But in the original PLANET no such thing was possible... <.html

the front is vinyl...a thick vinyl that looks like
leather......intersected with material giving it a
layered look....
the back is vinyl down to the shoulder blades then is
material...which is a thin silky polyester.....
there's a bandolier attached across the front made
from the same materials.....the pants are completely
made of the polyester with elastic waistband
....... there are two "boot tops" to slip over your
own boots with elastic straps to go under the
soles........
the mask is okay...it does seem a bit large......it's
more generic looking.......certainly not as good as
Don Post or Apemania......the face is grey surrounded
by black fur......
.I'm sure if you wore the costume on Halloween, people
would know you were a POTA gorilla.....

Very cool. Intriguing story so far and very nice artwork. Virdon, Burke
and Galen all look like the actors from the show. Not an easy trick.
In fact I think the art is as good or even better than a lot of comic
book artwork that is being published these days.
This is the kind of story I wish the Marvel magazine from the '70s had
done. Or...to continue a topic raised here previously, this is the kind
of story that would make a great animated cartoon - today.

But Zaius knows about the planet's history and must suspect/fear that a

Tim,
I didn't get to see the '"Planeta de Los Simios" image but it may be an example of the little
seen Argentinian comics. Is it a small-ish magazine with an original TV based story inside?

.htmlDave Ballard has lovingly restored the original artwork used for the
covers of the French versions of the 1970s Marvel Planet of the Apes
magazines. The credit for this artwork goes to the original artists
who created the images for Marvel's French distributor.
Some notes from Dave about these covers:
"Of the apparent 21 French issues, there were 10 that are of
particular interest to Ape-fans as they featured either:
An original POTA inspired painting
An image adapted from a U.S. cover painting
An image adapted from a U.S. interior 'splash page'.
(Note: The remaining 11 covers featured either non-POTA subjects
(Doc Savage) or were straight re-prints of original U.S cover art.)
These alternate covers have all been kindly supplied by Alan Maxwell
who wanted to share these uncommon images with the rest of fandom. I
was unable to find any credits for the French artists."
The first 4 of these beautifully restored covers are now available
in the Comics Covers section of the group website:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/ComicsCovers.htm
And larger size versions are available on Hunter's website:
http://www.goatley.com/pota/
After seeing the first 4, can't wait to see the rest as soon as they
are available.
Thanks to Dave, Alan and Hunter for making these covers available to
POTA fans. <.html

published between 1977 and 1979.They are not in good shape now but I
love it. There is an odd thing about the price (high for an 14 years
old boy in the late 70´s) nº1 to 21 are 50 pesetas, nº 22 to 27 are 65
pesetas, nº 28 and 29 are 50 pesetas again. This is the only notice
about a price going back.
All have movies adaptations except nº22 (an episode between conquest
an battle) and nº29.
I also buy "planeta dos macacos" in a holidaytrip to Lisboa in the
mid 70´s, but I can´t find it now, ohhhh.

Fantastic work guys!
Glen, your work looks to be pencil drawings?
Jose- are yours drawn and then coloured by computer?

coloured by computer.

I'd go along with that. Other than fanfic ("Freak" and
another story set in the POTA TV timeline), I don't think they've appeared
anywhere.
Yeah, I always thought the portrait of the Mutants in
Beneath was too negative. Given that they probably hadn't seen any non-mutated
humans in almost 2000 years, and that they had a right to be suspicious of an
Ape genocidal crusade, their paranoia wasn't completely unjustified. Even in the
case of Brent and Taylor, I could see where if they wouldn't help the Mutants
(which I always thought Brent should have done once he realized that they were
likely his own descendants!), they needed to be kept out of the
way. Although trying to killthem off was a bit much. Not that it would have
advanced the plot, neccessarily.
As to their religion, it's not our cup of tea, but
since it DID create their world, and it did have the benefit of giving them
super-intelligence and mental powers, they had a point. Maybe I've been drinking
too much multi-cultural Kool-Aide!
Come to think of it, I wonder if the Mutants were
modeled after the East Roman Empire? That is, a highly advanced, recognizable
but somewhat repellent remnant of a larger civilization?
