.htmlI'd come to a NYC ape fan get together. Meeting at the Public Library
is a funny idea. Of course there's always the Statue of Liberty (I
believe Liberty Island is open to the public again) or St.Patrick's
Cathedral or even the concourse of Grand Central station where
Brent's interrogation takes place. All, appropriate spots for ape
fans to meet.
I'm hoping to put a Gorilla soldier costume together for Halloween
and march in the Village Halloween parade this year. It might be fun
to have a whole bunch of POTA related costume goers represented in
the parade. So all you NYC POTA fans, come on downtown on Halloween.
Anyone can march in the parade. It's ALOT of fun.

Actually Schomburg did 2 Statue of Liberty covers-that one you
mentioned and another for Amazing Stories in Feb of 1964, both of which
pre-dated the Apes film. You can see them both in a book titled Saucer
Attack!

I've been aware that the image of a half-buried Statue of Liberty was on at least a couple pulp SF magazine covers years before PLANET came out in 1968.
One has to remember Rod Serling's involvement in PLANET. Serling, of course, had "The Twilight Zone" TV series. In looking for stories to adapt for that show he must have reviewed thousands of stories and I'm sure the covers of many of the old SF mags stuck in his head. I believe PLANET's associate producer Mort Abrahams comment when he said about PLANET's famous closing shot, "The concept was Rod's." However, that doesn't mean that I think Serling came up with it out of thin air. Obviously not. I also think that given the political allegory on the US that PLANET turned out to be with Michael Wilson's contribution, the Statue of Liberty ending took on greater resonance. If you read the Serling script for PLANET, the ending seem more like just a visual gimmick, but in the final film it came to really mean something.

Please keep the screaming disagreements to a dull roar children,
please...=)
G
It works if you lay his map over the Chesapeake Bay area, which is correct with the conclusion of the movie since Taylor rides NORTH to find the Statue of Liberty. Remember, the Statue is on an Island SOUTH on Manhattan. They way some of you guys want to orientate Cornelius' map it would have Taylor riding along the shore of Long Island at the end, but he wouldn't come across the Statue of Liberty that way.
Cornelius' cave has to be south of the Statue along the Atlantic Ocean coast, exactly how far south no one can say. The inland sea where the spaceship crash-lands and sinks is inland and WEST of Cornelius' cave. This makes it all very south of NYC, south even of New Jersey, and Ape City is even further inland and southwest of the inland sea.
Another HUGE mistake of BENEATH was to shrink the locations of the original movie and mix them up by having Brent stumble into the Queens subway station just outside of where Ape City is supposed to be.

noticed that too on the DVD. They screwed up the letterbox transfer. I'm

off.
I think it was deliberate. You can't sell a movie as very futuristic
if it's set back in the twentieth century.

That doesn't sound quite right to me.
The top Ultra-Marathoner who ran 262

Death Valley in 130 degree weather.
The average person walks at 4 mph.
But even at 1 mph on rough ground,
they should have been able to cover
at least 100 miles and in only 3 days.
And when they went to the cave it
took the half the night and part of the
next just to get to the cornfield. And
that was the short leg of the trip. I'd
say New York was at least a 100
miles, minimum. If only looking at the
blast radius of an average H bomb.

At 1 mph that's 24 miles a day which is 72 miles in 3 days. Now
assuming they would need to sleep at least 6 hours a day, then they
would only cover 54 miles in 3 days. And that doesn't take into account
climbing up and down hills and rocky cliffs. <.html

Never assume. These are astronauts!
They aren't going to waste six hours
on sleep in a desert with their water
running out. The norm survival is to
cover the most ground at night and
rest in the heat of the day. And we
already determined it took more than
3 days.

That may be true, but being picky about one little date is pretty nitpicky... It's not like it's a deleted scene that could make the difference... The date 1983 makes no actual difference in the CONQUEST film... The plague could have happened in the year 2027 and it wouldn't have made any difference... The only reason they pushed the date up so soon was so that they could have continuity from ESCAPE to CONQUEST... <.html

It isn't about being picky; it is about the studios tampering with
classic films. I could care less if the date was 1983, 1993 or 2003;
just leave the films in their original splendor and let me get what
I pay for; the whole movie and not an edit that the studios think I
don't need. Besides, the letter box VHS copies were released in the
1998 and the date is there. But to be frank, I never stated in my
original post that it took away from the movie; that was your words.
All I asked was if any one noticed the date was missing.

Not necessarily. We are due for a polar shift. No reason why a

True, it's unlikely that a blast that could move it al the way

Marvel UK issue 31, featuring the first two chapters of Kingdom on an Island of the Apes, is now available to download from Hunter's site. Thrill to the adventures of Derek Zane, a man who traveled to the future without the aid of an ANSA spacecraft (even though he still managed to crash when he arrived). No space for articles this week in order to accommodate the double-length allotment of Kingdom, but there is a letter column.
Just four more weeks until we get to the adaptation of Beneath in issue 35.

"Half-buried in the sand and washed by the waves is the Statue of
Liberty."...It doesn't say "top half", "remains of" or anything to
suggest it is any less than the whole statue, half-buried...It is not too far-
fetched to suppose that the island the Statue of Liberty is on is now
part of the mainland, and in the shifting of the earth and silt, it
gets half-buried...

Thanks Greg, Are you making up those taglines? ("thrill to the adventures").
I thought 'Kingdom' began well as one of the better original comic strips. Rico
Rival was never my favourite artist but the story had me hooked - right up until
that armoured ape appears on horseback! (Why?)
But back then, after the toe-punt in the gonads that was Apeslayer, even King

Of all the rotten luck.
If you guys head downtown to St.Mark's, then you should swing by a
store on 2nd Ave. called Toy Tokyo :
http://www.toytokyo.com/about.php
It's a pretty cool store. In the past they've had a lot of POTA related
merchandise, such as the 12" "Rebel Ape", Medicom 6" figures and those
small Kubrick toys (which I personally don't like too much). I even
picked up a small POTA wind up toy there once.
Also, a little East of there is Village Comics -214 Sullivan St.,
212-777-2770. Lots of great toys and models on display.
I hope your day is a huge success so that you guys plan another one.
Have a great time!

Thanks, Helen. I should have said they were getting dull for me, which is why I started punching them up with the Apeslayer! issues (there, I think that finally used up my exclamation point allotment for a while). I've also started noting the articles that are included, so someone who is not into the comics might see something else they'd be interested in.

Seriously, the version we get in the movie was far more watered down and

Interesting observations about Caesar. He does seem to be kinder to humans though, evidenced when he doesn't let the gorillas harm the teacher earlier in the movie. As a ruler, Caesar has no role model or predecessor to follow. If Aldo had killed someone else besides his son, he might have felt differently and not executed him. Elaine <.html <.html

Thrill to the adventures of Derek Zane, a man who traveled to the

managed to crash when he arrived). No space for articles this week in

At least 3975 is closer to the correct date of 3978.. Maybe they got confused on it, or decided to cross the dates, OR they were using the 3955 date as their date for Taylor's having been there and they tacked on 20 years (and conveniently forgot the film BENEATH...) <.html

In the novel of BATTLE, he is a bit closer to the way he was in CONQUEST... Rather than telling the apes to "take them (the mutants) prisoner", he tells them to "Kill them, defend your city"... He doesn't slaughter them in the film, but he calls on them to be killed in the book (which is better than the film)... <.html

Although not related to any of the movies, it may be of interest to

This non-descript fountain, has, as far as I know, no real connection

Flushing Meadow/Corona Park (site of the old World Fair)near the
Queens Zoo.
Next to this fountain is an official parks department sign that

regarding this unusual tribute to POTA. I can only assume that there
was a zoo/ape connection somehow. The funny thing is that there are
NO apes in that zoo, nor do I think there ever was.
The only mention I could find of it online was this:

I've emailed the parks department asking them for a little background

This is fascinating. You aren't the only one who has heard of
this. I did a Yahoo! search of the "Planet of the Apes Fountain,
Queens" and got some sort of interesting results. I didn't find the
answer to "why" it was named as it was, but there were some thoughts

I'm looking for a picture. Am I right that it is a "Minor" planet
