This is fascinating. You aren't the only one who has heard of

about its appropriateness.
I'm looking for a picture. Am I right that it is a "Minor" planet
fountain -- the satellite of a larger planet fountain?

There are several birthdays and anniversaries in June including the
anniversary of Battle's premiere, so the theme for the month is
Battle:

.htmlYes, Helen, the POTA Fountain is a small fountain. The big "Planet"
fountain in the park is around the huge metal Unisphere. That's in
another part of the park.
I didn't think that the "planet" part of the name would be that
significant, but based on info from Harrista that there is another
fountain in the park called "Planet of the Grapes of Wrath", I'm
thinking that someone in the NYC Parks dept. had some weird sense of
humor related to naming fountains!
God, New York is weird.
That's why I love it. :)

.htmlAnother nice calendar, James. I have to say the last few have been particularly impressive. The Battle one-sheet is my least favorite of the five films, but I like what you've done here by changing out the background.

You're very welcome Elaine. Actually, no one has these in their collection, unless they were very industrious with the photo paper and the scissors this weekend. These aren't scans of cards from the 70s. The set is completely made up using screen grabs from the film and Neil's excellent art that convincingly mimics the style of the original card set from Topps.
Greg
I am enjoying these cards which I do not have in my collection. I notice that the expresson on Caesar's face changes. Great acting by Roddy. Thanks, Greg! Elaine

You mean the James Mason/Arlene Dahl version, I hope...That is a
classic movie, one of my favorites, that I happened to see when it came

Helen,
Rory's article says:
"Remaining, however, are the Fountain of the Planets, and its smaller
and more specific cousins, the Fountain of the Planet of the Apes,
and the Fountain of the Planet of the Grapes of Wrath."

G
G, you saw it when it originally came out in December of 1959? Or maybe you saw it in early 1960? Anyway, what are your remembrances of it? I have a friend in Australia (not named Whitty) who's a major fan. We met on the web because it's his favorite film and we're both film music buffs and of course JOURNEY's score by Bernard Herrmann is a classic.

fountain
in the park called "Planet of the Grapes of Wrath",
I found a site that hat it. It combines two different stories
into one.
But this has 3 three stories in one!
New On DVD
Starring Charlton Heston, Henry
Fonda, William Shatner, Mark Wahlberg, Haley Joel Osment, and Ricardo Montelban
A young man, just
released from prison teams up with a genetically altered superhuman to fight the
apes who rule a planet where grapes can be grown for fine intergalactic wine.
You remember the movie, and if you loved it as
so many people did, then you don't want to miss the DVD.
Director Alan Smithee has assembled most of
the stars (Jane Fonda subs for her departed Dad), includes four hours and
seventeen minutes of footage not seen in the original 87 minute production, and
includes actual news footage and a re-enactment of critical scenes from the
trial. Also not to be missed is the thirty-two
minute animated sequence showing the growing of a grape from the grape's point
of view. Noted at the time, it is important to
recall the remarkable performance of Osment as the young Wahlberg, and Wahlberg
as the young Heston. It is all the more remarkable to remember that Heston was
young once. Of course Heston and Fonda stand
out, but the extra footage contains a much more crafty performance from Shatner,
most of which was cut when the film was initially released.
Although some of the special effects may seem
primitive today, like the use of animated lizards in place of real dinosaurs,
and what is clearly, at one point, a man pretending to be Sasquatch, the power
of the story and the clever repartee in the dialogue, especially between
Montelban and the uncredited Ursula Andress and a very young Denis Leary, more
than makes up for it. And the cameo of Michael
Caine, reprising his role as Harry Palmer, is explained in the additional
footage. But even without the additional four
hours and seventeen minutes, the film still holds up as one of the classics,
back when movies meant something.

I saw it in the early 1960's...I was very into dinosaurs, so the
scene where they battle the dimetrodons on the shores of
the "Saknussum Ocean" is what was most lasting a memory for me...
The movie so impressed me that I read the book by Jules Verne when I
was around eleven years old...
Yes, the score is a classic -- dramatic and intense, IMHO...

With the upcoming POTA NYC fan get together coming up, I was reminded of another POTA related attraction in the NYC area. Although not related to any of the movies, it may be of interest to NYC apes fans to know about "The Planet of the Apes Fountain". This non-descript fountain, has, as far as I know, no real connection to POTA in any way other than it's name. It's located in Queens in Flushing Meadow/Corona Park (site of the old World Fair)near the Queens Zoo. Next to this fountain is an official parks department sign that reads "Planet of the Apes Fountain". I have no idea what the story is regarding this unusual tribute to POTA. I can only assume that there was a zoo/ape connection somehow. The funny thing is that there are NO apes in that zoo, nor do I think there ever was.
The only mention I could find of it online was this: http://www.letsgo.com/NYC/04-Sights-637
I've emailed the parks department asking them for a little background on this. If they respond, then I'll post their reply.

I luv pretty much anything that Hollywood's done with Jules Verne's
books..."20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", the "Mysterious Island", "Robur
the Conquerer", "From the Earth to the Moon" (luv those "Selenites")...
As for the "Mole People" -- I luv '50s sci-fi!...The "Creature From the
Black Lagoon" is an all time fav of mine...
The best was "Dinosaurus", which I also saw in the theater...It's the
original "Jurassic Park"...

I know The Return of the Creature

it was a different actor or they changed

Are you thinking of "The Creature Walks Among Us"?...That was the one
where he got set on fire, and ended up wearing clothes, and walked off
into the surf in the end...
The "Revenge of the Creature" was the second one, and that's where they
brought him to 'Sea World' in San Diego...

What's In A Name?
There is one person in this city who can certainly answer that
question Parks Commissioner Henry Stern has peculiar but witty and
charming habits that he engages in while running one of the largest
city agencies in the city. With thousands of acres of parks (the
most are in Queens), thousands upon thousands of street trees, miles
of oceanfront beaches, scores of city pools, playgrounds, sports
centers not to mention a veritable army of parks workers all under
his domain, he certainly has a very big job. A very serious job. A
very important job. Because parks are the lungs of the city and he
is their ultimate protector.
He's been doing this job for the entire length of the Giuliani
administration. And he did this job during the 1980's for about the
entire administration of Ed Koch. He is clearly an intelligent man
who is a good administrator. In many ways most of the parks in this
city have never been in better shape. In sheer terms of longevity in
this job, he is second only to the city's first parks commissioner
and master builder, Robert Moses (who held the job from 1936 to
1960).
Now about the quirks mentioned at the beginning of this column.
While Stern is about doing his job, he also goes about amusing
himself, and sometimes makes everyone else shake their heads in
disbelief. First, the tree funerals. Yes, when a large or venerable
old tree is cut down by a tree vandal, he will hold a whole funeral
for the tree on the site of the dastardly deed. For a long time he
brought his dog, Boomer, to work and everywhere else he went. He
would invite people to pet the dog whereupon he would carry a
clicker and keep track of the numbers of people who have pet Boomer.
He wanted Boomer to get into the Guinness Book of Records on being
the most petted dog in the world. Seriously. There are other quirky
but harmless habits.
But he's got this thing with names. Look around the city and you'll
notice that every park and playground has a nice looking wood plaque
identifying the name of the park. Where before you never really knew
the name of your local parks you do now. Some of these names are
fascinating signposts to a neighborhood's history and geography.
When a park does not have a name, he invents one sometimes with
wit. (When a big playground was refurbished recently on Yellowstone
Blvd. in Forest Hills, he took delight in re-dedicating it
as "Yellowstone Municipal park," his own version of Yellowstone
National Park. There's a huge old broken fountain in Flushing
Meadows called The Fountain of the Planets, so when a small new
fountain was placed at the entrance to the Queens Zoo, he named
it "Fountain of the Planet of the Apes." A companion fountain he
named "Fountain of the Grapes of Wrath." Don't ask.
Then there's the people names. He names people with clever names
that reflect something about the person's job, or background, or
their real name. He started with himself. ("Starquest," because
Stern in German means star.) Then the mayor becomes "Eagle." Then
everyone on his staff got a name. Then they got a little plaque on a
pin with the name he gave them. And he will refer to all these
people by that new name. He remembers their names and keeps a record
of them all in a big black binder. Estelle Cooper, the assistant
Queens Parks Commissioner who runs Flushing Meadows-Corona park is
named "Unsphere." Our publisher, Victoria Schneps, is "Queen Esther"
(long story). A former editor here was "Copycat." I recently got my
plaque pin. He thought about my last name (Oats) and came up
with "Toasted." And that is what I have named the regular new
column. Each week I will write here about people and events that are
interesting parts of Queens. Some of these people and events (if
they are harmful to our borough) will deserve a real "toasting," as
in roasting. But, hopefully, there are many more people and events
in this county who deserve a toasting as in "here's a toast to you!"
So hope to see you here next week and we invite you to send in your
own suggestions about what you think deserves either roasts or
toasts.
So for this first column, the first toast is to Henry Stern. here's
a toast to you for making the city a greener and more amusing place
to live.
(David Oats is editor-in-chief of The Queens Courier and an
historian and activist on behalf of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.) <.html

Yeah, I liked the dog bit, too. I love eccentric sorts, and his story

there anyone here from Queens? Does this publication still exist?

Aside from the next thrilling chapter in the Derek Zane storyline, there is also an interview with Wally Harton, who served as chief costumer on Planet, Beneath and Battle. Finally, the back cover has a color photo of Cornelius and Zira and teases the upcoming adaptation of Beneath, just a few short weeks away.

Many of the people who work them are sci-fi fans themselves.
Even the Buckaroo Banzai oscillation overthruster has been

Perhaps the most obvious example was the re-use of Taylor's spacecraft in
the Rod Stieger movie 'The illustrated man' The ship can be seen quite clearly
in one segment with a snazzy new paint job.
I think gorilla uniforms once turned up in an episode (or TV movie) of 'The
wild, wild west'.
And the cockpit seats from Taylor's spacecraft have seen some action in 'Land
of the giants' and 'Babylon 5'.
I'm sure there's more.

They're not connected at all, and Murdoch regrets having gone to Paramount to help split the costs of TITANIC. That was a one shot deal.

I was able to open it. Nicely done everyone. I particularly liked the first part. Elaine, you really channeled your inner drill-sargent here, although I believe the correct spelling is panty-waist, not panty-waste. The second part is a nice contrast to the first and I think nicely illuminates the differences between the two Generals.
The only criticism I might have is that Glen's drawing of Aldo really looks more like Urko to me. It's a really good drawing of Urko, so it's really more a quibble than a criticism, really.

I figure they maintained it because they always felt that there could possibly a threat out there... I'm sure Zaius wasn't the only higher up that felt a (possible) appearance of an intelligent human could ultimately lead to the humans trying to revolt... That is a good point and from what we know now about apes(especially chimps), they fight each other. The films stress that the apes feel threatened by humans but they would have wars with each other over various issues. Elaine <.html

It seems to me the ape society is cut off
from the rest of the world by desert, jungle, etc. So who knows what is out
there. The prudent ape is always prepared! There might be a threat (maybe other
ape societies) we're never introduced to. - - - Jeff
