In the Escape novel, Zira and Cornelius mention fights with other Apes
settlements--something that the animated series novels also mention. The
Ape army was born of violence, of necessity and they must have the race
memory of all that death and destruction Kolp inflicted on the original
Ape City. Also, the Ape Army keeps Apes in check and ultimately is the
foundation for not only the gorilla general class but also Zaius---it's
only when the Army leaves in Beneath that Zira thinks of rebellion. It's
striking that the only orangutan who visits Cornelius's cave in Planet
is Zaius, a Zaius who clearly has absolute command of the gorilla
soldiers. We also don't know WHEN humans stopped being a threat---Nova
can still just about speak, so humans might have been a fighting force
only a couple a generations earlier. It's funny how things last--in
Chester, England, it's still illegal, technically, for a Welshman to be
inside the city walls after dark---in York it's the same for Scotsmen
(anybody who has met Alan Maxwell will probably agree with that
one....), all because 800 years ago Edward 1 saw them as a threat.John,
Scrolls.

Do we know whether Zira was the only one who knew, from the start, that
she's switched babies? I'm not too sure that Cornelius ever knew, nor
Stevie, but I wonder if Armando might have had to be in on it? He seems
quite cool about it at the end and maybe Zira intended their flight to
be a diverionary suicide mission, to give Milo the best chance? John,

I used to be a really avid Star Wars fan--I was in the original fan
club, had all the figures, blah, blah, blah. The contived warping of
story lines in the sequels to try to give the illusion of some over
arching grand saga, pre-ordained from the start has, since the last
movie, snapped this particular umbelical cord with my youth and I now
can't be bothered with it--I can't even be bothered to see Episode 3,
Nintendo of the Sith or whatever it is.If you compare the superbly
logical and powerful way Dehn evolved the Apes saga, from Hasslein, the
Bomb, Dog and Cat plagues, the arrival of Caesar, it's a matter of fan
pride to me that Apes is, when compared with Star Wars, a truly
sustained saga that has really stood the test of time and is head and
shoulders above later galactic upstarts and is as valid today as it
ever was.John, Scrolls.

I haven't bothered to see the latest Star Wars, and I think I'll just wait and rent it on DVD.  It just doesn't interest me much.

As far as the Paul Dehn thread of the APES series goes, I appreciate what he was trying to do, he kept the thing interesting, at least until he tired of it and walked away after CONQUEST, but I am annoyed by his inconsistencies.  It's very hard to ignore the fact that the sequels aren't all that they should be.

See the new Star Wars and regain that part of your youth. I, much like
yourself was a Star Wars fanatic as a kid and then I became distgusted
by the merchandise and the way it no longer had that special meaning
for me like it did when I was a kid. I suffered through the 2 new
films wishing it could have brought that childlike feeling back, only
to be as disappointed as I was with Burton's Planet of the Apes. My 5
yr. old son inherited my Star Wars collection and he was so excited to
see the new movie, that I had to take him opening day. Its a shame
that with the last film in the series Lucas finally gets it right and
gives the fans the movie they have been hoping for all these years.
Maybe I got caught up in my son's excitement but I really enjoyed the
new film and it surprised me. More of the classic characters are
involved and it felt like a Star Wars film. Is it magical like the
originals or Planet of the Apes? No. But I think you may be surprised
by how good this one was.

Yes, Revenge of the Sith is fun and worth seeing. I liked it better than any of the other ones
including the first two (never liked ROTJ). And this new Star Wars is better than any of the
Apes sequels by far as stand alone films. Lucas makes these films because he wants to, not
because the word comes down from Fox execs. Go see it and have fun.

I have to agree...I guess in the kid-vid generation, all the "whizz-
bang" special effects are more important that good, solid storyline...I
think apes, despite all it's little inconsistancies, is still a classic
saga that holds it's own...

Here, I have to disagree...I saw the original (and still the best,
IMHO) Star Wars in 1977, in San Francisco...It was the most
spectacular show I had ever seen...Also, IMHO, each successive film
has gotten worse, as far as story goes, and more complex as far as
special effects go...I for one, like a good story over flash and
bang, any day...That's one of my gripes against POTA2001...There's
unquestionably great sets, costumes and make-up, but the storyline
and main acting sucks...

It's been a while since we've had a new script added to the archive on Hunter's site, but thanks to Mark Rogers we now have one of the TV episode scripts we were missing: The Good Seeds.

Mark runs an excellent site devoted to the TV series. Among the many amazing things he has on his site is the text of the series bible. He's provided scans of this document so that you can download and print a copy for yourself.

Comparing Star Wars and pota is like comparing apples and oranges. They are not in the same category. Pota has stood the test of time because it is so good. There are themes there that are timeless. I also like Star Wars but see it more as a fantasy. Elaine

"Episode 3" was pretty good, but I think the acclaim for it is over the
top just because Lucas was FINALLY able to rub two storylines together and
get a spark. It still has the same problems as the previous two prequels. I
enjoyed the "darker" aspects this time out and I think it sends a good
message to Hollywood that they don't have to water down sci-fi to get a
large audience. Of course "Star Wars" always gets a pass and people will go
see it no matter what it is ("Star Wars" starring Paris Hilton? $ 300
million). But people are applauding that there's an actual story this time
so maybe Hollywood will take notice.
With the raves that the edgy "Batman Begins" is getting (reinventing Tim
Burton for the better) and what looks like a good summer for semi-smart
sci-fi ("War of the Worlds" as a take on 9/11) plus maybe "King Kong"
rocking at the end of the year, this is our best shot (maybe) of a new POTA
being greenlighted and done right. Slim chance but maybe in that primitive,
insectoid brain at Fox it might register.

I always figured he knew, but I didn't think it was actually "a plan"
(premeditated) to make the switch. Looking at it now, I think it
would be cool if he had been in on it with Zira. That she trusted
him. That maybe she asked him to switch them. Or maybe that he
thought of it and she trusted him enough to do it.

Think!  Zira wanted to say goodbye or Heloise.

"I know. but we understand each other."

Then when she's in the cage, you can literally see the light bulb

reason to tell anyone anything.  She'd just been pumped full of

I don't think he acted very sweet toward the baby that Zira carried to
the ship yard. He was protective of Zira, alright, but he didn't seem
that worried about the baby. I always figured he didn't know, but the
more I think about it, the more I think he did.

Who says they had a meeting and mapped out a plan? It was Zira's
idea, but Armando would have known as soon as Zira left the cage and
would have agreed with it, even if it wasn't discussed. To me, that
says he was in on it.

And Cornelius had to know immediately, too---parents know what their

I'm not sold on this. Even given the remarkable nature of his
guests I'm sure Armando would have had more affection and
responsibilty for his 'own' baby (the one born in his circus). To
just give the newborn, of which he was so proud, over to Zira
knowing it was almost certainly doomed just doesn't ring true to
me.

Sure, he would have figured it out almost immediatly and I'd
wager he was real pissed - but by then it would have been too
late and he would have made the best of it.

The Topps POTA cards were the first thing I ever bought POTA related in 1968.  Back in the third grade buddy in the school yard showed some to me and I went ape.  I bought over 300 back then.  I still have most of them, plus a wrapper and the box they came in.  The cards and the original LP for me evoke those times better than anything else.

I can't imagine what condition the gum is in inside those original unopened packs.  It was bad enough back in '68!  Must be dust now.

Me, too, Rory. When you're 8 you can't be shopping for one-sheets and lobby cards (though I did fruitlessly beg for the poster outisde the theatre in 1968)! The gum must be horrible 37 years later.

I didn't have enough brains when I was eight and nine to beg for the movie poster, in fact the thought of getting one didn't even occur to me until around '72 or so.  When I finally did get a one-sheet from PLANET it cost me $15!

I don't think it's been mentioned that today is Paul Giamatti's birthday, our own Limbo. He's 38. Since POTA2001 he's probably the biggest breakout star in the cast. Wouldn'cha know he's a movie star now, earning raves in "American Splendor" and "Sideways" and can currently be seen in "Cinderella Man". There's even an article about him in "Time" magazine right now. Next up: starring in M. Night Shalamar or whatever's next opus. He's also the biggest POTA fan of the cast of the remake and as far as I know the only one to fess up and say they weren't thrilled with how POTA2001 turned out. Happy Birthday! Go rub some flowers on ya. - - - Jeff

If Zira AND Cornelius knew, why don't they discuss how the 'real' baby
is doing? They're alone.I know it's to preserve the cinematic surprise
ending. Cornelius, being an unattentive Ape father, may never have
looked too closely at Milo and, anyway, Zira seems to be at great pains
to keep Milo welded to her at all times.Where would Milo have been
safest? Not with his parents, certainly.Would Zira have left her baby
with somebody she didn't trust? Certainly not.If she trusted Armando, I
think she would have planned it with him--it would be safer that
way. That's going to be how I view the story from now on.John, Scrolls.

Yeah, I know. I said that wrong.

I sort of figured no one knew about the switch, but I think that's
because I didn't know. In any case. Looking at the acting, it
seems that Armando knew. He has an air of satisfaction in the MaMa
scene, as if he participated. And his comment about being dominated
by Apes kind of supports what happens. And, although I always
thought Cornelius didn't know... I think that he has to have "in
real life." He acts like he doesn't have an attachment to the kid,
and as someone mentioned (Greg?) a dad would recognize his own son.

Now that I've said that...

I tend to be a little hyper, I write without thinking, and my
wording seems to imply action. By participated I mean "was informed
and agreed." And in an earlier post I seemed to imply that Zira
asked him to switch them, but I meant, basically, "told him of her
plan and was supported beforehand." Or, as below, that "he had
given her the idea and she trusted him enough to know it would be
safe and go ahead with the plan." In any case, you are right,
Cougar. Zira made the switch and it was her idea.

The Ape Nation crossover was pretty good--possibly one of the best bits
of the Adventure series, I think. We had Capricorn One on the telly a
few weeks ago---pure Jerry Goldsmith genius. I listened to Spider-man
2's soundtrack a couple of nights ago and it's difficult to hear much
difference from Spidey 1 and, indeed, Burton's Apes. The old generation
of filn scorers seemed to be able to have a style whilst still taking
risks and evolving---as POTA itself showed. Why is it that everything
was better in the sixties and seventies!? John, Scrolls.

Hey Tim,

I'm not clear what you're asking here? As far as I'm aware the
only covers that are NOT featured in the gallery were either
straight reprints of images from the US mags or non-apes - are
these what you want to see?

If so I'm afraid I can't help, I'm not sure if Alan can either, I think
he's only collected the issues with apes on the cover.

Eric Greene has a full set!

I think what Tim is asking for is the original versions of all the French covers you restored. You sent some of the unrestored versions to Hunter and he's got them displayed next to your restorations but there are a few where Hunter's only got the restored versions.

I think because the '50s was a little bland.  Unfortunately what we get mostly now is imitation of what's been done before.  Eventually there will be a reawakening of creativeness, but who knows when?

I'd like to answer if I may...Taylor named Nova when they were both still in the same cage so Dr. Zira probably heard it then...and Taylor kept his dogtags in his crotch if you watch Beneath you'll see the scene where Heston "awards" Linda Harrison with the dogtags.

Personally I always assumed that Taylor found the dogtags after they
all joined up with Cornelius before heading into the Forbidden Zone.
That was supposed to be near the area of the hunt. Thus, it wouldn't
have been too far from the waterfall.

I think it is the same reason that directors like Schaffner could
direct such diverse films as POTA, Patton and The Best Man. Those
working in film then considered themselves craftsman who shaped their
talents to fit the project at hand. Today in film everyone thinks of
themselves at artists and they shape the project to fit their signature
style.

Taylor first calls her Nova in the cage scene after his ill fated
escape in Planet. If you rewatch the beginning of Beneath he says her
name on the beach in front of C&Z.

I'm still more bothered by Armando calling Caesar Caesar. It not only
takes a bit of the sting out of his choosing his own name later, but it
makes Breck and the others look dumb for not realizing the Caesar was
the chimp named Caesar they were searching for.

Excuse me!  Excuse me!

But does anyone recall seeing dogtags on any of the astronauts in the original movie?

Dehn invented as a plot devise so that Brent could realize the Nova/Taylor connection right away.
