Of course you're right. He did invent the dogtags as a plot device just
as he invented Dr. Milo.

I was just offering my personal theory to explain the discrepency.

There's not going to be a reawakening of creativeness because now the entertainment companies are just a cog in the wheel of bigger companies. That wasn't true in the '60's and '70's. From here on out it's the black "Honeymooners" and "Dukes of Hazzard 3". - - - Jeff

I think because the '50s was a little bland.  Unfortunately what we get mostly now is imitation of what's been done before.  Eventually there will be a reawakening of creativeness, but who knows when?

Speaking of Goldsmith, I read that a piece of his music (called "Valhalla") is in the new film "Kingdom of Heaven". Maybe the Goldsmith experts could pick it out.
They're also doing a new score for a rerelease of Heston's "Major Dundee". Or was that "Crocodile Dundee"? It's the cover of "Film Score Monthly".  - - - Jeff

I think Caesar went by the name Milo at the circus and then for whatever
reason Armando christened him Caesar later. I said in my chronology that
Armando named him that to be ironic, everybody's worried about a talking ape
like he's going to take over the world or something. So Caesar doesn't pick
his name he just points to what he's already named. Obviously Breck isn't
looking for a "Caesar", just a talking ape.
And what's with the name Mandemus? How could a self-respecting ape have
the word Man in his name. Did he get teased? - - - Jeff

So you are saying because of the merger of companies, there is less creativity. this would be an interesting thesis for someone to develop. It's almost like Hollywood doesn't want any original ideas anymore. Elaine

- - - Jeff

Yes, Goldsmith is still scoring from the grave.  That's how bad the situation is now with composers!

I recently bought a newly released CD of one of his older scores, the Arthur P. Jacobs produced THE CHAIRMAN from 1969.

Aside from being a common name among Hispanics,
to quote Armando himself, "If it its man's destiny to
be dominated then dear God let him be dominated
by such as you."  Maybe by naming him Caesar,
he's doing his bit by giving him a ruler's name. It
is, after all, God's will, and he's a good Catholic.

I'm sure I'm committing blasphemy here by writing these questions but I have to know:
When Caesar, naked, gets in the cage with the ourangs (I only use this word because it's easier to spell!) they have large flaps of skin on the sides of their faces, like our present-day primates do. In the next scene when Roddy is dressed in standard green coveralls, there are two ourangs, one on either side of him who are also dressed and getting processed. If we assume they are same ones that were with him in the cage (and even if they're not) the flaps of skin are missing!  Where did they go?

Ape Management knows that no one is going to pay much for an ape with
unsightly bits of skin flapping around - it lessens thier value. So the first stop
for any male orang-utans (before getting dressed or processed) is a
revolutionary, Botox-like, injection, that forever removes unsightly pockets of
    flabby skin.

Remember this was not Star Trek (no offense) science. These were
films that, especially for the sequals were made for kids. Most of us
are fans of these films because they caught us while we were young
and they hold a special place in our memories. Now analyzing them we
find all kinds of faults and what appears to be "bad writing" but as
kids we probably needed some of these plot devices a little more
spelled out for us. My 5 yr. old LOVES the old Battlestar Gallactica
but can't stand to watch the new series because it is too compelex
and he doesn't get it. He truly understands most of the entire APES
saga and can explain it pretty well to someone who doesn't know whats
going and I think that was by the film makers (for the most part)
    choice, not just bad writting.

I think most people would agree that Fox is not handling "Planet of the Apes" very well. They pretty much sank the franchise with their reimagination. But, like the plant the astronauts find in the original, new things keep peeping through; action figures, trading cards, a new comic book series. How could Fox mismanage such an evergreen property?
But we know the best way to jumpstart it is with a feature film, a good one. What are the odds of that happening, given that POTA is basically stuck with Fox? Through no effort of those currently heading the studio, Fox owns POTA. It can't be made elsewhere.
Anyway, here's an article at the famous movie website aintitcool.com with an educated guess at who is mucking things up at Fox. The article is basically about "X-Men 3", Fox's big flick for 2006, but the first part talks about Fox's track record and how they are alienating directors, such as the director of last year's "I, Robot". POTA2001 isn't mentioned but the message is clear. Maybe we'd be better off if POTA time warps another 30 years.   http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=20443    - - - Jeff

    Thats a great proyect, thanks.

My "Planeta de los Monos" comics are very old and are falling into
pieces, so now I can read the stories like new.

I spot some diferences. I´ve post in files/JR/comic folder an example.

The technique looks like ink and pen versus brush and ink.

Also, and more obviious, the swimsuit is more generous in Spanish
    version.

    Take care.

point and I certainly never caught the discrepancy. Now that I think
of it, it's a pretty big hole as far as I'm concerned.

If somewhere down the line (after the atomic wars) humans split up
into those that were mutant and non-mutant humans living in the
wild, why would the mutants still have black representation, but the
apes are intrigued by seeing 'black' Dodge? It leads one to think
that either something happened to the black population in the wild,
or (even stranger) there were none to begin with.

Think of it this way. The humans in the wild intermingled forming
one race. Those seen in the first two films all have similar
characteristics; dark hair, dark eyes, tanned white skin.

The mutants retained a social structure where there was less
interracial marrige. Prehaps it was even unacceptable to the mutants
because they wanted to retain their various racial heritages.

The teaser is said to be 2 and a half minutes and will give us our first glimpse of Kong (his toe?). Those who can't wait can see it at Volkswagon's website a few hours earlier (I guess they have a tie-in? Hope they jumped on the Herbie bandwagon). Those who restrain themselves can see it for the first time on the big screen when "War of the Worlds" opens.
As for the original on DVD, word is that it will include all the censored scenes, including Fay Wray stripped. And Peter Jackson will take part in some featurettes, including a tour of his Kong collection. But there's a rumor going around that they found the long lost "spider pit" sequence. That's not true.
In any case, looks like they'll show Fox a thing or two about relaunching an ape franchise. - - - Jeff

All of the censored scenes were restored way back in that "Year of the Monkey" 1968, and all the cassettes, laserdiscs and DVDs (from other countries) include them.

Yes, that "spider pit" scene actually never made it to the final release version in 1933, and the negatives were destroyed over sixty ago!

A while back, one of these groups discussed the idea that Armando and Zira were in cahoots about switching her baby with Heloise's. The question is, why is Zira's baby more important than Heloise's (in terms of needing protection)...unless it's to preserve the seed of talking apes. Was it Armando's idea all along for the overthrow of mankind? I've always thought of Armando as mild-mannered, not a radical guy. Whatever happens, happens and is God's will. He says he "hates those who try to alter destiny, which is the unalterable will of God". If he believes God wants apes to dominate, would he be trying to help God out? After all, he changes Baby Milo's name to Caesar, a king. Could he be as misanthropic as Taylor ("Aren't we rude enough to each other without being rude to animals?")? Perhaps Armando is the mirror image of Hasslein and Breck, trying to jiggle the odds in the opposite direction. - - - Jeff

    Solar-sailing Era Begins in Space

Like many a sailing voyage, Louis Friedman's "cruise" began in a

anything a wind-whipped sailor has ever experienced. Tuesday, Cosmos-
1 is slated for launch from a Russian ballistic-missile submarine
beneath the Barents Sea. If all goes well, the craft will unfurl its
reflective sails 528 miles above earth to become the first
spacecraft to harness the gentle nudge of sunlight for propulsion.

    QUOTE--

Chimp paintings fetch 26,000 dollars at auction

Mon Jun 20, 3:22 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - Three paintings by a chimpanzee named Congo were sold
at auction in London to an American buyer for a total of 14,400
pounds (26,250 dollars, 21,610 euros), many times the estimated
    price.

Congo's works went under the hammer in a sale that included works by
French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, French cubist Fernand
Leger and US pop artist Andy Warhol.

Presale estimates had put their price at between 600 and 800 pounds.

The buyer, Howard Hong, said he was a great fan of modern and
    contemporary painting.

Nicknamed "the Cezanne of the ape world" Congo turned out more than
400 paintings and drawings under the encouragement of anthropologist
    Desmond Morris.

Morris championed the theory that chimps had artistic sensibilities
and put on a show of Congo's works in the 1950s.

Picasso is said to have had a Congo painting in his studio, in a
style described as belonging to "the abstract expressionist school".

"I doubt whether any work by a chimpanzee has ever been auctioned
before," Howard Ruthkowski, modern and contemporary art specialist
at auctioneer Bonhams, said before the sale.
