I was watching a report on this on last night's News. Interesting stuff but surely
not something you'd want to spend £14 Grand on. The paintings were of
nothing recognisable - just blobs of colour. I preferred Amy's work from
'Congo' :0)
Kind of reminded me of a movie I once saw (whose title I can't remember).
Peter Cushing played an artist who was always being criticized by
Christopher Lee as an art critic. Cushing shows Lee a painting by a brand
new talent and Lee raves over the use of colour and vibrance and texture
etc...
Cushing brings out the artist and it's a chimp (I think) the disgraced Lee then
plots a bloody revenge.
Can anyone name the movie?

figures look so-so. After Medicom, many fans will probably feel "why
bother?". - - - Jeff

If that's the quote they used, it's incorrect... It's supposed to be :TAKE your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape..." <.html

WHY EVEN A TIMELORD CAN'T CHANGE HISTORY
By Eleanor Mayne
IT'S a giant step for physicists but a disaster for Dr Who - scientists have found
that even if we could travel back to the past, it would be impossible to change
the future.
The breakthrough contradicts the basic premise of hit movies such as ` Back
To The Future, and The Time Machine.
For centuries man has fantasised about going back in time to save a tragically
doomed romance or alter the course of history by ridding the world of tyrants
such as Hitler.'
But a new approach to the subject, using quantum mechanics theory, has
shown that the past is fixed. A time traveller would not be able to deviate from
events that have already happened in his or her present; the only option
available would be to follow the path already taken.
Professor Daniel Greenberger, based at City University of New York and
Professor Karl Svozil, of the Technical University of Vienna, spent hours
poring over the equations. They found that when they modelled a journey
going backwards in time, the paths followed only reinforced the route already
taken - killing off all other options.
Professor Svozil, 48, explained: 'According to our model, if you travel to the
past, you would only see those alternatives consistent with the world you left
behind. It would appear that things were happening which you could not
control, which just do not allow you to alter the past in a way that would be
inconsistent with the future you came from.'
Professor Greenberger added: 'once something has happened, the effect is
that it kills the other possibilities because there is this feedback into the past.
The past is determined. The future is still undetermined, which is consistent
with our ideas of free will. It is a nice philosophical solution.'
Their findings solve the conundrum, which has puzzled scientists for years: if
a time traveller can change the past, could he jeopardise his own survival?
It was this that nearly spelt the end for Michael J. Fox's character, Marty McFly
in Back To The Future when his mother fell in love with him instead of with his
father. As Marty's own existence was threatened he gradually began to fade
from view.
Professor Svozil accepts that generations of fans of time-travel films and
books will be disappointed. But, he says: 'in our model this would not happen.
It is a fantasy we all have sometimes. You have a romance with a girl and you
say I would have done things differently, or, I should have spoken to that girl
on the train. Unfortunately that would not be possible`. While there have never
been practical demonstrations of time travel, it is not ruled out by the known
laws of physics.
Heidelberg-based physicist Professor Heinz-Dieter Zeh agreed with
Greenberger and Svozil's conclusion, but said their method was unrealistic.
He added: 'Changing the past is incompatible with nature's irreversibility,
which is, based on thermodynamics as well as quantum measurements'.
And physicist Avshalom Elitzur, of the Weizmann Institute in Israel, said: 'this
is a very nice idea. Time is very mysterious.'
Quantum theory was developed in the early 20th Century by scientists
including Nobel Prize winner Einstein. It is described as the physics of tiny
particles but bizarrely for the layperson, gives only probabilities instead of
definite measurements to properties such as their location at a point in time.
Science fiction fans can take some comfort in the knowledge that
teleportation, at least, is possible. Last summer, physicists in Austria
transferred the properties of light-particles over a distance of nearly 2,000ft
with no physical link, demonstrating what Einstein described as 'spooky
action at a distance'. But in the near future it is more likely to find a use in
super-fast computers than to beam humans across the galaxy. <.html

That's what I said!
You don't see the other quotes missquoted.
Even though the misquote is the common usage
over the actual quote. I think they did it on purpose.
Just like they stick Kim Stanley's name under Kim Hunter's

QUOTE--
Chimp paintings fetch 26,000 dollars at auction
Mon Jun 20, 3:22 PM ET
LONDON (AFP) - Three paintings by a chimpanzee named Congo were sold at auction in London to an American buyer for a total of 14,400 pounds (26,250 dollars, 21,610 euros), many times the estimated price.
Congo's works went under the hammer in a sale that included works by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, French cubist Fernand Leger and US pop artist Andy Warhol.
Presale estimates had put their price at between 600 and 800 pounds.
The buyer, Howard Hong, said he was a great fan of modern and contemporary painting.
Nicknamed "the Cezanne of the ape world" Congo turned out more than 400 paintings and drawings under the encouragement of anthropologist
Desmond Morris.
Morris championed the theory that chimps had artistic sensibilities and put on a show of Congo's works in the 1950s.
Picasso is said to have had a Congo painting in his studio, in a style described as belonging to "the abstract expressionist school".
"I doubt whether any work by a chimpanzee has ever been auctioned before," Howard Ruthkowski, modern and contemporary art specialist at auctioneer Bonhams, said before the sale.

and waited and waited (as comic fans had PILES of comics to get signed--
sheesh!) to meet Mr. Mike Ploog! I had him sign a Marvel POTA No. 1 right
under the Lawgiver in "Terror". Then I asked if he would draw an ape for
me.....and he did! I have posted it under Photos>Apefan23. He said he
LOVED doing the Apes series and wished it had continued. When asked
what he used for references, he said he had some pics but also was good
friends with the original storyboard artist which, of course, I've now forgotten

Hi Tim,
That's a great sketch from Mr Ploog, easily the most all-round Mr,
nice-guy I've ever waited in line for. I too asked him if he used
reference material and he told me he didn't because it confused
him! I knew that answer couldn't have been 100% correct but
didn't take issue with it.
Did he have any original Apes artwork on display?
BTW, The costume designer for Apes was Morton Haack.

pals and we got on to discussing movie sequels. I asked the
question: could anyone name the earliest series of films PRE
apes that had a continous storyline?
We came to the conclusion that most sequels PRE apes would
feature the same characters but in different unrelated
adventures. (Tarzan, James Bond etc) The best we could come
up with were the Universal horror movies (Frankenstein, Bride of
Frankenstein, Son of, etc)
Can anyone think of any earlier examples?
BTW, Saturday morning serials (Flash Gordon etc) don't count

usually a movie with the same character(s) with one or more
sequels IS unrelated. Most were detective films. Mr. Moto
Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, The Thin Man etc . . .
The only other example I can think of is Son of Kong.
Another ape picture. What are the odds?
The comedy team stuff, Marx Bros., Abbott & Costello,
Bob & Bing, were playing the same guys but not the same
characters. Can anyone think of a running storyline that
wasn't a serial? I can't. Even in Blondie the only
continuity
is Baby Dumpling. I don't think Ma and Pa Kettle was
continuous. And in the Frankenstein stuff Lugosi was all
over the place, one movie he's Ygor, and the next he's
fighting the Wolf Man as the monster. One up on Karloff
I guess.

True, but it wasn't made in the Hollywood system.
Great movies though. If you like Shintaro Katsu
check out his brother's series, Lone Wolf and Cub.
Shintaro Katsu was the producer on them.

.html .html.htmlMore or less, and despite major inconsistencies, the Universal FRANKENSTEIN series, from the original in 1931 to HOUSE OF DRACULA in 1945, is a continuous story. It's a seven film series, and eight if you choose to end it with ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.
Also the MGM TARZAN series from 1932 to 1942 is a continuing story, more or less.
However, I really try to take each film on its own terms. I think what you should only be concerned with is the story each film is telling. Film series aren't the same as TV series.

None were the saga type of series like POTA, Star Wars or LOTR.

How? Cornelius never says when the nuclear war occured. Nor does he
state that the Ape takeover was a violent one. Just because the
sequence of events occured that way in Conquest doens't mean they did
in APELINE ONE. In fact, Cornelius makes reference to "Man's original
downfall" which could suggest that there was also a secondary downfall. <.html

| Subject: OT: Jackson's "King Kong" |
.html
.html
I found a book about Peter Jackson that's
pretty good ("Peter Jackson: From Gore to Mordor", 2005 ), a compilation of
various writings about his career, including the upcoming "King Kong". It's a
U.K. book, part of a series edited by Paul A. Woods (author of the book "The
Planet of the Apes Chronicles").
Woods writes: "It would be nearly three
decades on from his first viewing of the original that Jackson's
oft-mooted project to remake "Kong" - which eluded him (in 1996) while the more
unlikely ("Lord of the) Rings" trilogy got the green light - would finally be an
actuality. The monster fanboy director has since altered his plans (from 1996),
claiming, "I don't want to change what I loved about it. I don't want to
reinvent it because it doesn't need reinventing", perhaps a sideswipe against
Tim Burton's disappointing "reimagining" of "Planet of the Apes" (2001). Jackson
was once mooted as a likely director for the POTA remake, which may have
rankled, given that the original (POTA) was his other favorite great ape -
monster movie as a child. There is a jokey reference to the film in the 1996
"Kong" screenplay, where Ann tries to protect Kong by shouting at Denham, "Take
your filthy paws off him - you ignorant pig!" But it's unlikely Jackson could
have been much more successfulthan the usually inspiring Burton, if saddled with
the same leadenly literal POTA screenplay".
Of course, "Ape" fans now have visions of a
"Lord of the Rings"esque POTA if Jackson had directed, but he sought it out back
in 1992 when he was a much different director, and in 1996 Fox sought him out
(Jackson got a rep for doing terrific FX cheap after "The Frighteners") but he
was doing his first attempt at "King Kong" (which resulted in a bad script,
often found on the internet). "Kong" got cancelled and during the early stages
of "Lord of the Rings" Jackson and his producer Fran Walsh hooked up with writer
Phillipa Boyens. It's the three of them that made "Lord of the Rings" what it
was and probably what the improved "Kong" will be (along with the help Jackson's
clout provides in terms of not having to jump through studio hoops; maybe "Kong"
not being a Fox film will help). So if Jackson had done POTA it doesn't mean it
would have been a home run.
A couple "Kong" tidbits:
Jackson says the story is "about love" and
that "Kong is a very old and very brutal gorilla and he's never before felt a
single bit of empathy for another living creature. For the first time in his
life, he feels empathy when he meets Ann Darrow. Initially he thinks he's going
to kill her and then he slowly moves away from that". Jackson says most of the
movie will take place on Kong's island home (battling dinosaurs and such); the
last third will take place in 1933 New York (the year the original came out).
Jackson will also do the spider pit sequence, which was filmed and lost in the
original.
Jackson: "We will play on the similarities
between the jungle of the New York skyscrapers and the jungle where King Kong
lives".
Jackson: "I'm interested in "Kong" being
quite stylised and the jungles of Skull Island I want to be very over-the-top,
like a jungle from hell".
Jackson: "Our first script ('96) was sort of
"Indiana Jones"-ish and rather flippant. It was what I regard as a very
Hollywood script, but now, what we've come to like with "Lord of the Rings" is
the approach of making the situations feel very real, even though we're dealing
with extraordinary situations and weird characters like elves, hobbits, trolls,
orcs and the like. We didn't let the fantasy nature of the story dictate the
tone...We decided that that was the approach we wanted to take with "Kong" as
well".
The 2 and a half minute trailer for "Kong"
premieres tonight on NBC and various affiliated cable channels around 8:59 P.M.
and will be in theaters with "War of the Worlds" this week. - - -

In anticipation of tonight's trailer there's
an article on the film in "USA Today" (says www.comingsoon.net ). In it, Peter Jackson
notes that Kong is 25 feet tall and 120 - 150 years old, and has a
snaggletooth ("We had the notion that Kong's jawbone was smashed in an ancient
fight and mended itself at a crooked angle"). - - - Jeff

.html
In a quest to find Kelley (aka Baby Milo) I ran across this posting:
Searching for Answers
It may play a role in curing human illnesses, but some say animal testing is unneccessary By Stephanie Weintraub (Daily Texan Staff) October 21, 2002 "[Photo] A chimpanzee plays in its [sic] enclosure at the Department of Veterinary Sciences park in Bastrop on Friday. The park is home to chimpanzees, rhesus monkeys and other animals that are part of research projects. Although the other animals are used in tests about cancers and efforts at creating an AIDS vaccine, the chimpanzees are there to provide a population of healthy, normal specimens in case an emergency need arose for them. On the outskirts of Austin lies a 395-acre animal research facility, which aims to battle deadly human disease.... The Bastrop-area science park, called the Department of Veterinary Sciences, is a satellite of the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, which is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as the top facility of its kind in the
country.... The facility houses some 700 Indian rhesus monkeys, which are part of a breeding program and are used for AIDS research. In addition to the monkeys, about 160 African chimpanzees and 30 to 40 sheep, mice and rabbits live at the facility. "A lot of people say, how can we use an animal because it's not a human," Satterfield said. "Actually, most of what happens in a mouse is the very same thing that happens in us. There are obviously some differences, but the types of research that's conducted at Anderson are looking at the very things that are identical, not the things that are different." A mouse, he said, shares 75 percent of its DNA with humans, and chimpanzees share 95 percent. Rodents comprise 90 percent of animals used in biomedical research, he added.
The center is attempting to track a vaccine for AIDS, and about 20 of the
center's rhesus monkeys are used in ongoing AIDS research. Science has found that chimpanzees are capable of sustaining the AIDS virus but don't get sick.... The chimpanzees and monkeys at the center are housed in outside corrals and cages that are meant to mirror a natural environment...."
The post was found at:
The second link, which I hope will work through Yahoo Groups is to pictures of the outside corral. The Kelley we have been researching, and which may actually be "our" Kelley, is part of that "clean" group. It is even possible that she is pictured amongst the chimps playing in the enclosure. Dr. Satterfield is my contact at Bastrop (MD Anderson). He explained about the clean colony. At the time, he decided it was better not to send me a picture of Kelley until we know "for sure" that it she is "our" Kelley.
Try this link:
I've been distracted by real life, so I haven't been working on this project much since May. There is a lot of conflicting information, even through "reliable" sources, so I am at a difficult point. Also, until chimps can speak, it is going to be hard to follow any history that we come up with about Baby Milo, especially with this conflicting information.
Funny thing... Hubert Wells has tried to call me at home four different times and I have missed his call each time. Very discouraging. I think he is the best source of information, as he worked with Roy Kabat during the time that Escape was filmed.
Did I mention that I got a phone call from Dan Westfall, owner of Cheeta the Chimp? That was very cool! Cheeta was one of the chimp actors in the Tarzan movies, and he played Chee Chee in Dr. Dolittle. He is also the oldest living chimp in the world (turned 73 years old in April) according to the Guiness Book of World Records. Someone asked when chimps start to turn gray. In the picture that Cheeta sent me, he is only slightly gray on his chin. Very handsome guy, BTW! Anyway, he was sitting right beside Dan Westfall while we talked on the phone. I asked if I could speak with him, but I understand he doesn't like to talk on the phone.
Rambling... gotta go...

If you go by the theme song from the cartoon he was

The original Mighty Joe Young would have been more like 10 or 12 feet
tall. In any case, what does the cartoon theme have to do with *Peter
Jackson's* King Kong? Maybe his is only 25 feet tall.

The same way mankind has domesticated animals for thousands of years

for apes to evolve from pets into slaves.

Well Cornelius states that the human remains in the cave are from 700
years before the remains of the carnivorous gorillas which were from
1300 years earlier. 1300 + 700 = 2000 years, thus the 20th Century.
Taylor also calls the Alpha-Omega bome a souvenir from the 20th
century, not the 26th Century. Also, the visual evidence in Beneath
show the ruins of a 20th Century New York.
BTW since we're discussing what is mentioned in the film, can you quote
the exact line of dialogue which directly establishes that C&Z created
a second timeline. <.html

The ape revolt took place after 500 years of servitude. That's not the
issue. It's when did the nuclear war take place. Nowhere is it stated
that the two events are linked or even that the Ape revolt was a
violent one. Just because events happened that way in Conquest doesn't
mean they happened the same way in the alleged "original" timeline. <.html

.html .html.htmlSo, now we have a good idea of what this movie will be like. I'm glad they set it in the early 1930s. At least the movie will have the right look. The original (concept, story, film) was a thing of its time and it always been kind of married to the 30's, so I'm grateful for that. I don't really agree the look of Kong. Watching a real, although oversized, gorilla going through everything Kong has to go through isn't going to be fun. I feel too much empathy with gorillas. I prefer the more monstrous look of the original. What Jackson's gone for looks more like the mating of an ape and Wallace Beery. Anyway, as a CGI spectacular, it should be great.

in a recent e-mail, Jackson's 1996 Kong script had a nod to POTA. I wonder if

Here's a way to bring this around on topic.
Let's hear some ideas about how Peter Jackson could put a POTA moment in the
movie. Since he also loves POTA, how could he do it without taking people out of
the movie? (By the way, I liked in the trailer when Kong said, "Bow your
heads!"). This thread just occurred to me so I don't have anything to start it

I know it's too obvious but when Jack sees Kong peeling off the girlies dress in a fit of rage
he shouts "Get your stinking CGI paws off of her you unfeasibly large, damn dirty ape!"
Or...
It looks like there's some kind of Dino stampede in which our band of adventurers get

aware of it - we see them run and for a few seconds being chased by an invisible enemy

.html Maybe at the end(SPOILER WARNING!) he could have three people stood
with their feet on Kong's arm with another guy in the 'smile' pose?
Jackson loves POTA? Now that I didn't know. Anybody got any sort of
links to the guy? John, Scrolls. <.html

.htmljames,
so did those humans die in 1955? because 3955-2000=1955. the
answer is no. after all, cornelius is just a "primitive" archeologist,
i doubt the apes have some chemistry degree.
cornelius and zira ACCELLERATED everything by their only
presences. that's a fact! that's what paul dehn was aiming for.

Cornelius says 'approximately 700 years earlier', but it's what Serling
& Wilson were trying to communicate to the audience which was a 20th
century destruction of human civilization.

Well Paul Dehn made what he was aiming for clear in a 1972 interview
which is quoted in the book 'The Planet of the Apes Chronicles' by Paul
Woods:
"The whole thing has become a very logical development in the form of a
circle', explained Paul Dehn, 'I have a complete chronology of the time
circle mapped out". <.html

.htmlTrue but that doesn't really address the issue. If there are two
timelines why does the nuclear war have to take place in conjuntion
with the Ape revolt/takeover. Just because the chain of events shown in
Conquest was Plague/Ape Revolt/Nuclear War doesn't mean they happened
way in another timeline. The chain of events there could have been
Nuclear War/Plague/Ape Takeover.
