dehn said that one year before battle, you should take care that in
battle there's a new purpose.

nuclear war wipes out every space travel project, and with no
space travel i just don't see how the plague comes on earth

True, Battle can be looked at as the fork in the road. But if a new
timeline was created, it was in Battle by Caesar's actions, not by his
mere existance.

It could have been a spaceship that was lauched prior to the war and
returned after it was over.

That's true enough... I'd say your point that an apes revolt and a nuclear war don't have to go hand in hand is probably true...

Your argument proves the 3955 date in BTPOTA is wrong...The date in
POTA, 3978, is correct -- and 2000 years previous brings us to 1978 --
5-6 years after Taylor and Brent left...

Jackson definitely wants to use the Empire State Building like the
original. I thought of Kong starting to climb the Statue of Liberty and
someone off screen says, "Damn it to hell! He's going up the statue!" but
Kong doesn't like climbing it and moves on.
Arthur Jacobs was a kid in 1933. I thought of a kid reading an ape comic
book )of course POTA didn't exist back then but an ape on the cover wearing
clothes. And someone says, 'Hey Arthur, look at that!" and they see Kong
being destructive. Hee hee hee! - - - Jeff

Cornelius never said when the nuclear war was. He didn't say it was
before nor did he say it was after.

yeah, but if we assume the war happened in 1992 in both the lines,
then the enslavement of the apes happened in the following 200
years. ape menagement belongs to apeline 2...it should be so.

another question: what's about the original caesar of apeline one?
was him an orangutan as showed in pota68?

The original ape to speak was an ape named Aldo... They never mention what species of ape he was...

The orangutan they show in PLANET is a statue of their Lawgiver. The Lawgiver is not the ape who started the original revolt, he is the ape who wrote the Sacred Scrolls.

That's one of the only things that Dehn was consistent with, but it really should have been 3978 because that is the date from PLANET, and that film is the first one.

Right, again, LT...Here's the lyrics:

King Kong,
You know the name of,
King Kong,
You know the fame of,
King Kong,
Ten times as big as a man.

Throughout the land,
You've heard about this wonder;
Listen closely now,
And you will hear the thunder!
Of this mighty ape,
And he's a friend of man,
So goes the legend,
The legend of:

King Kong,
You know the name of,
King Kong,
You know the fame of,
King Kong,
Ten times as big as a man.

One day a boy,
Too young to know the danger;
Made a friend,
Of this giant fearsome creature!
And the life they led,
On their island home became a legend,
The legend of:

King Kong,
You know the name of,
King Kong,
You know the fame of,
King Kong,
Ten times as big as a man.

Subject: HUMANOID APES
.html
It seems to me obvious now that the AUTHORS of the last 3 POTA
movies (DEHN) imply that the "humanoid APES" were still present on
Earth scattered in the remote places of Africa, Indonesia and God
knows WHERE!
If you think about that, In ESCAPE (1973) there's an incredible
reaction to Cornelius and Zira JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE ABLE TO SPEAK!
Nobody pointed at the fact their cranium is different
from "primitive" Apes, or that their physical structure is obviously
human-like. Even ARMANDO is not that much surprised, and he's the
owner of two "common"/primitive chimps.

Since it's estabilished CONQUEST is set in 1991 (GOSH!), I barely
can conceive genetic manipulation or enzimal development can bring
to thousands of Humanoid Apes in such short amount of time.

I figure those "Humanoid Apes" (a spontaneous mutation) appeared in
the beginning of the 1900, and were secretly imprisoned and scanned
by American government in the '50ies and '60ies. That would explain
MANDEMUS's presence in BATTLE - he was one of the first "hominides"
to have been proper attentions by the scientific communities in some
sort of AREA 51.

In APELINE ONE the nuclear war could have happened in 1992 (as
Apeline TWO). If it's really so, then the Humans managed
to "enslave" the Apes in the following 2 CENTURIES. The APE
MANAGEMENT seems to have never appeared in such timeline, so I bet
nature provided APELINE ONE humans of their Humanoid Apes. The
mutation appeared spontaneously. In APELINE TWO, they managed to
hunt and enslave the Humanoid Apes scattered throughout the World -
it was a well-planned scheme.

Anyway, from Cornelius's speech, it seems that there were still
HOMES or GROCERIES in the infamous "5 Centuries" of APE enslavement,
so this could be seen as evidence that the nuclear war - in Apeline
One - happened in the 26th century.

As far as concerned Apeline two, maybe the nuclear war happened 500
years before because the PRESIDENT and AMERICA's SOCIETY were hugely
different. Maybe Hasslein's killing and a probable associated
President's fall are the REASONS?

.html
Happy Friday everyone!

Well better late than never, the July 2005 calendar has been uploaded to the Files Section:
July2005.jpg
This month the anniversary of the 2001 remake is celebrated.

Also, since it is a holiday weekend in the US it seems fitting to kick it off with a contribution from our friend in the 'mother country' Dave Ballard. Today's "Lesson from the Lawgiver" is Dave's very funny spoof of our weekly feature. Just click on the banner on the Yahoo Home page or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/LFTL.htm

And since it is a holiday come back on Monday for another special holiday Lesson.

Finally, to celebrate the holiday and Conquest's anniversary we're having a little contest and the prize is a Medicom Conquest Caesar and the latest copy of Simian Scrolls.

Now all you have to do to win is identify a major continuity error within Conquest. This is not a script or story error but a mistake by the Director. And it occurs during Caesar's time at Ape Management. First person to post the error, wins.

Good luck.

Subject: Escape Ending
.html
Hey all,

Just joined this site, recently bought the boxset from Ebay - just
waiting on it being sent out :) Anyway, I recently watched Escape..on
TV and have a question about the ending. Why would Zera throw her
baby in the sea?

I can see the point of the baby-swapping, quite a clever ending. But
why did she throw it in the sea? Surely if the police caught up with
them, they'd find Cornelius dead, Zera and the baby alive. They'd
think this was their baby, and probably kill it and her. So why throw
it in the sea? It is because if they ran tests or whatever they'd be
able to know this 'baby' was a normal ape(and that Zera had switched
somehow)? Surely they wouldn't have the medical ability to do this?

Even still - Cornelius and Zera's baby might look/act/talk/be
medically identical to a 'normal' chimp. Since 1970s America hasn't
saw anything like these chimps before, there's no way they could know
what Zera's baby would be like, there's no guarauntee it would be
intelligent at all.

If anyone could clear this up for me I'd most appriciate it. Maybe I'm
thinking about it too much! Perhaps will become clearer on repeated
viewings, I've only saw the film twice and the original time was years
ago.

Cheers

Stu

You're going to cause another tsunami
by making all those dead English teachers
roll over in their graves simultaneously like that.
And the correct spelling is Zira with an I BTW.

Anyway to answer your question, I'm quite sure it wasn't a
"You want the baby so bad then have him!" sort of move.
I think it was more to get rid of any evidence of the switch.
Forensics didn't have any DNA testing back in the 70's.
You may have noticed that in the past 10 or 15 years a lot
of people have been vindicated of the accusations that sent
them to prison and set free because only now can they check
the DNA.  And Zira's understanding of even 1970's tech was
limited to say the least.  (See picture at the bottom of post)

<<Surely if the police caught up with them, they'd find Cornelius
dead, Zera and the baby alive.>>

No way.  I think it extremely unlikely that and infant chimp could
take 3 slugs from a .38 and live.  He was dead before he ever hit
the water, and most likely before the second bullet -- killed instantly.
Zira died shortly after reaching Cornelius, and even if she didn't, we're
talking 70's medical technology again, she's have to have the will to
live, and I really doubt that at that point.  Good question though, I'm
sure the Stevie was thinking "Why did she do that?" as well.

In this deleted scene Zira wonders just how
to brush her hair with a hairbrush this small.

I agree that the book is a lot better than the film, but I still love the
movie! Heck it's my third favorite film of all time!

I'm sure, as mentioned in the 'Behind The Planet Of The Apes'
documentary) that had they not been forced to edit so much of
the film it would've probably been much better. But when you
think about it, except for 'Conquest' all the POTA films were rated
    'G', which by today's standard's, a 'G' rating for them would never
fly. And giving 'Conquest' a 'PG' wouldn't go well in this day and
    age either, I think.

I loved the Armando character, the significant reason the Apes
ruled the planet in the end. Had it not been for his allowing
Caesar to live, and then exposing him to the slavery that had
become of Caesar's kind, the 'revolt of the apes' might never had
    happened.

Anyway, I love 'Conquest', and watch it probably more than the
    other films. Caesar rules (literally!)

The Conquest contest has had some interesting answers but not what
we are looking for. Remember that error is:

    - Not a story or script error, but one made by the director during
    the filming.

    - Takes place during Caesar's time at Ape Management.

And I'll add one more clue:

    - Look carefully at the extras.

The winner will get a Medicom Conquest Caesar and the latest issue
of Simian Scrolls for the correct answer.

    Good Luck.

Actually PLANET was released in February 1968 and MPAA movie rating system didn't get launched until November of '68.  PLANET was still in some theatres that late and I remember seeing some ads in the newspaper that slapped an "M" rating on it.  That's what "PG" and later "PG-13" used to be and it stood for "Mature Audiences."  But in May 1969 I saw PLANET again in a re-issue with THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES (The ad announced: "The Perfect Mates - Apes and Men") and it had a "G" rating.

If re-released to theatres today, I'm sure all the APES films would be rated "G," even CONQUEST.

Thanks Rory. I uploaded the pic to the files section for all to see.
      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Rory%27s%20Scans/4JulyTimes.jpg

Interesting that the movie 'The Detective' was included. Does anyone
know what film is considered the unoffcial sequel to 'The Detective'
and what connection it has to POTA?

The unofficial sequel was 'Die Hard'. I just bought The Detective along with the Tony Rome
films. I don't know the Apes connection though.

That sounds like the same titillation advertising as the "Forced Mating" campaign.  But I don't remember the M in the 60's and early 70's  But apparently there was such a rating.  I do remember GP.  It was later changed to PG, maybe because that actually make sense.
Here's Wikipedia's explanation -- It even mentions POTA's unusual G rating..  You can read the full article at . . .MPAA film rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

      Original ratings

The original movie ratings consisted of:

      • Rated G – Suggested For GENERAL Audiences (including children).
      • Rated M – Suggested For MATURE Audiences: Parental Discretion Advised.
      • Rated R – RESTRICTED: Children under 17 (originally 16) not admitted unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian; some theater chains specifically stated that the "adult guardian" must be at least 21.
      • Rated X – Children Under 18 Not Admitted; the notation "Age limit may vary in certain areas" was sometimes added.

Many parents thought films rated M contained more adult content than those that were rated R; this confusion led to its replacement in 1970 by GP:

      • Rated GP – General audiences/Parental guidance suggested.

In 1972 GP was changed to PG – Parental guidance suggested.

From the adoption of the system through the mid-1970s, it was not uncommon for mainstream films such as Airport, Planet of the Apes, The Odd Couple, and 2001: A Space Odyssey to be released with G ratings, but by 1978, that rating had become increasingly associated with films, often poorly made, intended specifically for children, while the PG rating became increasingly common for "family" films, with the G rating increasingly stigmatized by a public perception that a film so rated was a "dumb movie rated G for kids." This led to the PG rating becoming overloaded with everything from family films "spiced up" to avoid a G to very mature films that were "toned down" to avoid R ratings. It also led to the somewhat waggish public connotation (never intended by the MPAA) of PG as "Pretty Good."

can you describe those deleted scene?

      i have other 2 conquest-related questions:

1- in battle, the c&z top secret footage caesar was searching for
was archived in ape management in 1995. so ape management
was still running. are the events in conquest covering a 1991-95
      span?

2-the final caesar speech, why was it changed?

The books THE DETECTIVE and DIE HARD were written by the same guy, but I think James is referring to what would have been another Frank Sinatra cop movie, but he ended up not starring in it.

You're right. The book on which Die Hard was based was a sequel to the
novel 'The Detective'. The POTA connection is Collen Camp who appeared
in Die Hard 3 and in Battle.

      Sorry, I have to disagree.

I'm sure that the POTA films might appear to be somewhat tame
(where violence is concerned) compared to today's films, but I'm
sure than any film showing people (and / or apes) getting shot,
electrocuted, beaten, etc., would not be considered 'G'.

To be honest, if I had to give a rating to each using today's
      standards, they'd be:

'Planet Of The Apes' - rated 'PG'
'Beneath The Planet Of The Apes' - rated 'PG'
'Escape From The Planet Of The Apes' - rated 'PG' (sorry, but the
murder of the baby chimp is not what I'd call 'Ideal Family
      Entertainment')
'Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes' - rated 'R' (I might go with
      a 'PG-13' rating)
'Battle For The Planet Of The Apes' - rated 'PG'*

      - * Japanese extended version would have a 'PG-13'.

      Just my opinion.

Why rate that one an "R" by today's standards? There is as much violence in the first two films, and their tone is just as dark as CONQUEST... I'm guessing a lot of people still view CONQUEST as darkest because that is how it was described/viewed, and that might stick in their heads...

'Battle For The Planet Of The Apes' - rated 'PG'*

      - * Japanese extended version would have a 'PG-13'.

EVEN with the few extra minutes added to it, it sure wouldn't raise that film up to a PG-13 from a PG... The overall movie is not made more violent, etc. because of the Kolp & Alma scenes... All they do is talk, they don't do any destruction in the extra scenes... The only bit of extra bloodshed is when Aldo and his troops take out the school bus and it's passengers...

the film it would've probably been much better.

Anyway, I love 'Conquest', and watch it probably more than the

      Hi folks,

and UK reprints) and I thought I really needed a good chat about all
these great Ape things I've been into for all these years.
So 'hi' to everyone. It looks pretty lively here, the files section is
      massive for a start!
I'm Adrian, living in the UK. I remember seeing the Escape and POTA
double bill in the cinema in the mid-70s and watching the TV series.
I enjoyed the new movie (except the last 10 minutes) but what I really
love are the comics... Terror on POTA by Doug Moench and Mike Ploog.
      Fantastic.
Anyway, hi. Hope to have some good chat soon,

      mic,

in the sequence where caesar, macdonald and virgil are searching
for the recording of cornelius and zira. according to virgil, the
footage was "acquired" by the ape management in 1995, so the place
was still running by that specific time.

so it looks like conquest cover a major timespan, which seems to me
      plausible.

i have another question for you. why were the apes in apeline one so
dumb, since they required 500 years to evolute? maybe in apeline 2 the
scientists synthetized a sierum thanks to cornelius and zira's gland
system. what do you think about?

Maybe it was due to a bad translation but Virgil never says anything
about 1995. When he finds the tape of C&Z, Virgil does mention the date
      of the tape, 1973.

I would not say the apes in the original timeline were dumber than the others... It took time to evolve their intelligence, as they were bred for slavery, they must have bred the superior apes and superior gene pools to increase their intelligence etc. While 500 years isn't a realistic number, at least it's more real than 8 years for all that to happen...

I really don't think the scientists in the second timeline developed any type of a serum (from Zira and Cornelius) to increase apes intelligence... The reason that the apes intelligence jumped up so fast in the second timeline is this: They just moved everything up for story continuity... They had the child from ESCAPE, and rather than go with a more realistice story/scenario, they just had him involved in everything so they could quickly continue the story...

      mic and james,

okay, it was the italian version.
i think corny and zira's biology had to do with the further evolution
of the still-living humanoid apes... take care, mandemus is at least 3o
      years older than caesar.

i know it was paul dehn's fault, but that doesn't change the fact
the movies are masterpieces and we pota fans have the special task

I and mine are all okay.

My son's school is closed for the day as many students rely on public transport, which, as
you can imagine, is in chaos right now - and today I'll be car sharing, using my car to help
three strangers to work and back home again. Other than that I was mercifully
      unnaffected.

I'll also go out on a limb here and say that you probably won't find
better quality. When I did the project, I spent a year gathering
together six different sources from members of this list. The quality
ranged from unwatchable (literally) to very good. You can see samples
from four of the sources here:

      http://www.goatley.com/pota/dvd/toons/

The two I didn't share captures from were even worse than the worst of
these, and that included a set of discs purchased via eBay.

The Greg P. Sci-Fi versions were the cleanest, but they also had
overly-vibrant colors (looks like some color-enhancement done by
sci-fi), had the Sci-Fi logo in the corner, and they were edited. The
final source I used was unedited and looks great---considering that
the original sources used for the broadcast weren't that great to
begin with. On top of that, I did some considerable audio cleanup,
making the final DVDs sound much better than the VHS source sounded.

Mine are in Manchester, but they go to London on business.
And though I haven't heard from them, they use the computer
at work.  And since they're in television and they don't go to
work in between projects, not hearing from them for long

Do you think London was targeted for being in the coalition?
Or as a symbol of capitalism that you would have been
      targeted eventually anyway.

And do you think the timing was based on the G-8 summit

.html I watched Conquest the other night and still could not find the error. One thing I did observe was that Caesar got into the cage with the arriving Orangutans, when he was let out, they announced he was from Cameroon, I think and then the orangs before were announced as from Indonesia. It is just funny that Caesar wasn't caught sooner. The workers who let Caesar and the orangs out of the cage didn't think it was odd that a chimp was in with three orangs. Elaine<.html
