Is Hunter working on a rarities DVD? If so
that's cool, once again I'm sure that too will be top
quality.

I have one of his vids. Some great stuff on there.
That other guy was going to do one, but went off
to work on his Terminator web site. His name
escapes me. He was going to give everyone a
free one. Never happened. Hunter gets stuff done.

You don't have to be a Brit to have friends there.
And I'm a bit of a Brit at heart, as well as being
of Welsh/English decent. Just as I'm Japanese
at heart, if not ethnicity. Now if I can find a nice
Japanese Bird with a posh accent, I'll be set!

Well as promised here the answer to the Conquest Anniversary
Contest. Now the clues were:
- A major continuity error that was not part of the script but the
fault of the director.
- It occurred during Caesar's time at Ape
Management.
- Watch the extras.
When Caesar is brought to the 'Breeding Annex', two guards
accompanied him and the 3 gorillas. In the scene on the balcony one guard is

When they turn the corner to the cells with the females, the guards
are not only different actors but both are white. It is surprizing no one got this because the mistake is so blatant.
The prize for this was a Medicom Conquest Caesar. That now goes
back in the prize bin and will be added to the prize package for the next
contest. (Which will be at the end of the
month.) <.html <.html

Anniversary Contest
Well as promised here the answer to the Conquest Anniversary
Contest. Now the clues were:
- A major continuity error that was not part of the script but
the fault of the director.
- It occurred during Caesar's time at Ape
Management.
- Watch the extras.
When Caesar is brought to the 'Breeding Annex', two guards
accompanied him and the 3 gorillas. In the scene on the balcony one guard is
white and the other is black.
When they turn the corner to the cells with the females, the
guards are not only different actors but both are white. It is surprizing no
one got this because the mistake is so blatant.

Maybe it was more than a corner.
Maybe they went into the building
and there was a changing of the guards.

.html I've recently noted that the POTA films seem to have a love-hate
relationship with religion.
In Planet the Apes religion is used as a weapon to hide the truth about the past and subjugate the citizens of Ape City. In Beneath the mythology of religion is mocked with the mutants worshiping a nuclear bomb as their God.
Yet in Escape Armando is protrayed as a deeply religious man who's
kindly actions are in response to his faith in God. Even Hasslein wonders if he is acting as God's 'instrument or enemy'. In Conquest Caesar says that it is God's will to treat humans with compassion. And of course in Battle that Lawgiver involkes God as creator of the world who sent Caesar as a savior.
So there does seem to be a contadiction in the films' opinion of God
& religion. Anyone have any thoughts? <.html

Fascinating. Maybe an "evolution" in the films' opinion of God and
religion?

I wonder if that is a reflection of our times (during the production
of the films) or theirs (the Apes)?
> In Planet the Apes religion is used as a weapon to hide the truth

mythology of religion is mocked with the mutants worshiping a nuclear

Hmmm. Another argument that they might be "aping" humans? Definitely
a statement about our human society at the time. (Social, political,
etc.)
> Yet in Escape Armando is protrayed as a deeply religious man who's
> kindly actions are in response to his faith in God.
Another reason to love Escape (and Armando)! And look what happens
when Armando follows his faith outside the box! I love it!
> Even Hasslein wonders if he is acting as God's 'instrument or
enemy'.
Yeah. Well, Hasslein has issues of his own to deal with. And he
certainly doesn't show himself as a "man of faith." He freaks at the
thought of what may have happened in the future (did I say that
right?) and certainly isn't willing to accept it.
> In Conquest Caesar says that it is God's will to treat humans with
compassion.
As we should treat our animal friends with compassion.
> And of course in Battle that Lawgiver involkes God as creator of the
world who sent Caesar as a savior.
Definitely "aping" human society. (As some may imagine, I have a
little problem with this, but if anyone wants to explore this idea
further in the context of the film, I'm game.) Patrick has a lot to
say on this subject, and he finds it to be a very pivotal concept. I
think it was presented by the writers as a cheap ripoff story line. I
don't believe it was the original idea when Planet was made in 1968 or
when Boulle wrote the original story.

.htmlNow available on the Downloads page of the Group Website are several
POTA videos:
- The original screen test with Edward G. Robinson.
- The NATO preview for Planet.
- The rate NATO preview for Beneath. (This includes some scenes
deleted from the final film.)
All of these are big files, so they may take some time to download
for those with slower connections (dial-up, DSL).
Also, you no longer have to be a member of the POTA Downloads group
to access all the files on the Download page.
The Downloads group has been converted to the POTA File Archive. The
files section in this group was 98% full. The fact that our files
section was almost at capacity is a tribute to the generosity of
the members of this group.
But measures had to be taken to free up space for new files. Certain
larger and/or older files have now been moved to the File Archive
group. Specifically, The contents of the following folders:
-The Audio folder.
-The Rory's Scans folder.
-The Rare Shots folder.
The empty Audio and Rare Shots folders are still in the Files
Section in case anyone wishes to upload something new to share with
the group.
Also, the files in the Fan Fiction folder have been moved to the
POTA Fan Fiction group.
If anyone that contributed one of these files has an issue with them
being moved, please email me offline. However, the good news is there
now over 10MBs of space in our files section for new files. All the
older files are still accessable in the Files Archive along with
several scanned pages of the Apeslayer comic.
The group website can be accessed via the link on the Yahoo Home
page or directly:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/MainPage.htm , the
Downloads page is in the Art & Info section. Our Group website now has a mirror site http://www.freewebs.com/planetoftheapes/ . Everything on the Group site is there but the Downloads page (That will stay exclusive to members here).
The File Archive group can be accessed here:

beliefs. Somewhere, though, even those beliefs mutated if the
lawgiver (ape) becomes "creator" in the evolved ape's belief system
later on down the road.

Exactly! (I was looking for that word earlier, but, along with
memory, word retrieval has left the building.)
Definitely religion plays a huge part in the story -- hence, the
Lawgiver. It's interesting that it wasn't explored more. I like how
there is so much present in the films, but it is just kind of "on the
plate" and not "in your face."

The apes, like humans, would have different viewpoints on religion. Zaius is more like a fundamentalist in his beliefs in contrast to Caesar who attempts to treat humans fairly. Of course, Caesar was raised by a human whereas Zaius fears them. Elaine<.html <.html

The apes would develop different cultures, so they would develop different religions. Elaine

.htmlDid Caesar believe in a human God? I think that, as an intelligent
being,Caesar would probably have got to the stage where most people are
nowadays, namely that God is not some white haired old guy but some
sort of entity embodying a set of values/morals.I think if Caesar was
brought up by a clearly devout guy like Armando, those beliefs would
have been well taught---the guy had a religious medal round his neck
almost from birth. This really is a deep debate, but an excellent
topic.I'm not saying that a Catholic Caesar would necessarily be a good
thing--Hitler was proof of that.If these Apes have souls, 'the divine
spark', then they must have some instinctive feelings towards
religion. With Armando in the background I think my answer would be yes,
Caesar worshipped a human God, and invoked that God at the climax of
Conquest.John, Scrolls.

I agree. What makes anyone think God wants to be
understood?
I think the holy men of all cultures latch on to whatever part of
that divine truth that they can perceive. The rest is just made

This may be the week we hear from Zanuck about another "Apes"
flick as he promotes "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I think with "King
Kong" in everybody's face (he's on the cover of "Entertainment Weekly") the next
move will be Fox's. The question is: do we want another one? Fox sucks! - - -

started this thread, but it's definitely another major aspect of the
whole Apes mythos.I really like the idea of Beneath being a 'Holy War'
with mad humans defending the icon of their race, a Bomb, and Apes
defending a culture that, ultimately, might be based on Armando's
teaching of Caesar. These films just have layer after layer, without
necessarily trumpeting the fact.Unlike most modern 'blockbusters', the
Apes scripts ask us to do a little bit of work if we want to see a
message, rather than ramming the message down our throats. That's why
these films are so damn good.John, Scrolls. <.html

John,
There was a line cut out from the original movie (much to Kim Hunter's dismay) which
adds some wieght to the idea of a common diety crossing the species barrier. It's from the
'kiss' scene...
TAYLOR
Dr. Zira, I'd like to kiss you good-bye.
ZIRA
All right, but.... (tears in her eyes) ...you're so damned ugly!
Taylor smiles, leans down, kisses her.
ZIRA (softly)
Go with God, Taylor. (half smile) That's an old expression. it comes from both ape and
man.

think that Ape culture adapted human culture---I've always hated

it about Man, not Apes.Serling, Wilson and Dehn gave us a whole

Caesar worshipped a human God, and invoked that God at the climax of Conquest.John, Scrolls. > > > > > >I think the apes definately believe in a higher power but culturally have different religious beliefs. personal beliefs, and the belief system he thinks is best for his

Ape religion will be easier for his people to accept and
follow. There's been many a King of England who had to project one
religion whilst following another.Maybe Caesar's rages in both films
indicate an internal struggle---his life is turned upside down
shortly after that helicopter lands.I'm looking at Caesar in a whole
new light since this thread started! John, Scrolls.

How can Zira claim that "Go with God" is both an ape and man
expression? If she means Taylor (a man), then we need a scene in
which he actually says the words in her presence. Going on memory
here, but I don't believe there is any such dialogue.
But of course since all the other humans in the movie do not speak,
she could not have heard it from them, eh!
I suspect that that there may have been another scene cut.
(I REALLY have to read all those script variants some day.)

I had a similar problem.
The way I got around it was to
right-click on it and save as target.
Then play that. I find that usually
works for vids with play problems.

Elaine, maybe there's also a difference between Caesar's own private, personal beliefs, and the belief system he thinks is best for his people.Maybe, regardless of his faith, he thinks a more recognisably Ape religion will be easier for his people to accept and follow. There's been many a King of England who had to project one religion whilst following another.Maybe Caesar's rages in both films indicate an internal struggle---his life is turned upside down shortly after that helicopter lands.I'm looking at Caesar in a whole new light since this thread started! I think you are probably right. Caesar has the intelligence to realize that his own personal
beliefs may not be right for most of the apes who participated in the revolt. Starting a new
civilization may require the apes to have certain religious beliefs to get things going. I am
sure Caesar's internal struggles affect his belief system, especially when Aldo proves that
apes aren't any better than humans. Elaine <.html

It's a screen grab from the Behind documentary, I think it was an early
costume & make-up test.

A number of scenes were cut. The scene where the gorilla

have plague and the scene where Zira tells Taylor that
Nova is pregnant come to mind.

.htmlI know about the other cut scenes. But what I meant to say was that
there was probably a specific scene (or part of one) in which Taylor
DID say "Go with God" (or something to that effect) and when it was
cut out, they then had to cut Zira's portion later in the film to
since it no longer made sense. Kind of like a domino effect.
But going back to the other known cut scenes you mentioned, has any of
it survived? I've always wished I could see that Nova pregnancy
revelation scene. To me, it was always considered as one of the few
scenes that tie (or try to tie) back in with Boulle's initial novel in
which Ulysse (Taylor) has a son. I've often wondered if that was
originally filmed with the intention of later making a sequel with a
grown up kid or "The Further Adventures of the Taylor Family on the
Planet of the Apes".

I'll have to dig out my copy of the script to see what's actually
there.
As for the cut scenes they probably ended up lost in a salt mine
with the rest of Foxes film archives or swept out from the
cutting
floor. I've only ever seen stills of those scenes. And if Fox
knew
exactly where to lay their hands on them, no doubt they would be on
the DVD extras.
